The service was okay. The sushi does not taste fresh. I felt like I had gone to Genki sushi. Mediocre sushi. My friend had the 3 sampler that cost $24. It looked and tasted like a $10 meal. The sampler had 4 pieces of sashimi that did not taste fresh. The ribs looked like meat in stew. There was a salad. No ginger but some kind of cabbage veggie for the sashimi. Terrible terrible. Wasted money. So 10 pieces of sushi with I Cali. Roll 4 pieces of sashimii, 6 cube beef meat supposed to be ribs and lettuce salad. Two sodas. Cost $71.

We were seated immediately and staff was friendly and helpful. The combination plate was nice. Very nice to have so many choices and the servings were of generous size. I had chicken teriyaki and tempura. Also had a spider roll and hot sake. Everything was good, fresh, and quick. But not too quick. Served in proper order by a friendly waitress. For the price, ambience and air conditioning they get even more stars. We left satisfied and I would go back. Too full for dessert, A hidden treasure. Don't get confused; it's not fancy but it IS nice.

The food here is good for Big Island standards. It's probably one of the most authentic on the island The sushi was fresh but the cuts a bit smaller than normal The combos were bountiful and well done You have to give them high marks for friendly service and cozy atmosphere Only downside, very pricy but you do get what you pay for.

Total rip-off. If you want good Sushi do not come here. You will find better Sushi at 7-11 or ABC stores(for people who live on Oahu) . I also asked for a baked potato on the side. The potato was to come with the works. Instead they brought out a small half of a microwaved potato with what looked like Velveeta cheese melted on top. They wanted $5 for the half of the small potato. I sent the potato back. I should have sent whole dinner back and gone to MacDonald's for a much better meal. Do not waste your money here. Rip Off

This restaurant was so good. Unlike other Japanese restaurants in town, this one has plenty of seating (definitely more than 10 seats); so you don't have to worry. We walked in and did not have to wait. And it was a relief knowing that reservations were not necessary. The service was outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and answered all of our questions. Between my brother and I, we split the dragon roll, the salmon teriyaki dinner entree with soup and salad, and a delicious iced tofu appetizer (can't remember what it was called). It was just the perfect amount for us. There were plenty of options for all sorts of diets. We would definitely come here again since the food and service was great.

This place is well decorated for the holidays. It really makes you feel like the holidays are here and you can relax during your meal. This place is a little difficult to find because you have to make your way down a little corridor of the mall. You would never know this place unless you were looking specifically for it. Everything feels nice and cozy as you walk it. We were greeted and promptly shown to our seats. This place really makes you feel like you are in a local Japanese place in Hilo. The mood and the decorations really felt more like Christmas than anything I was really impressed with the specials that they had, they all sounded delicious and I wanted to try them all. They have some great combination plates that will allow you to have 3 items to choose from. I think that this is a pretty worth while deal. Some of the pictures show salmon and ahi sashimi, but mine was ahi only. So you might want to be sure to ask what types will come with the order. Our food and appetizers came out really quick and it was well displayed for us. I can see why this is a favorite for many people.

My husband and I come here occasionally, but when we do it's always amazing. We ate here on his birthday and we both had a great time eating and drinking warm sake. I love the ambience and the dim lights. It's very relaxing and the food is BOMB! :)

Been here many times for udon or teishoku, but this was the first time to try the omakase (chef's choice) at the sushi bar. As one would expect, it wasn't cheap - but worth every cent! Great sushi, interesting conversation and excellent service. I think this will be my go-to spot for special occasions from now on. Highly recommended!!

I am so sad that I only found this place after 3 years of living in Hilo. It's tucked in the corner of a little shopping center but it's worth the stop. I went here twice in a week because I couldn't get enough. Their udon was so good as well as their sushi. They have great portion sizes because I never left hungry. Try this place out.

So my husband saved enough money to take out for steak and sushi. My husband order what he tooght was a stir fry but was a soup with a lot of some type of green bean sticks and cabbage with all my non favorite seafood. Our bad¿¿ but I order steak and twice backed potato. The steak was a bit tough, order median and got almost rare (yuck) the salad was ok though the lettuce came from a grocery store, shredded taco lettuce. And a bit limpy. Oh yeah, twice baked potatoes was mashed flaked potatoes with a half of kraft single cheese on top. The sake was $12 a shot and my wine was 12 a glass half full? Empty? Nice water, tipped him 15% . Not worth the money my husband saved.

I have eaten too much poke in the last few days during my vacation trip for our 10th anniversary. All I wanna eat tonight is some noodle soup and I found Miwa through Yelp. Thank god they have udon soup and that's exactly what I want. It tastes really good and I'm very satisfied. Although I

I remember eating at Miwa's when it was new many many years ago. The food is a solid local Hawaii Japanese fare. While not hipster or trendy the food is well made and the staff very friendly. I would call Miwa's more of a local Japanese comfort food. Great food, great staff, out of the way location and of course the nostalgia of eating at a Hilo food staple. I don't always eat at Miwa's when I am in town, but when I do I am not disappointed. As a side note the fresh fish is sometimes caught by the staff on local fishing trips, can get more fresh and homegrown comfort food then that.

I always order the Tonkatsu. I love the sauce!! We always order off the sushi menu too! Everything has always been tasty and consistent. One of my favorite places to eat Japanese food on the island!

Though the fish was fresh and beautifully presented, the portions were very small and the nigiri extremely over priced.

Finally a place that serves up Japanese food as you would find over there -- the right ambiance, quality and flavors. Authentic mom & pop style Japanese food. We really enjoy having lunch here.

Excellent service...Leigh was AWESOME! Fast, polite, authentic, and extremely thorough. Started with a small order of sake...good to go! Contemplated the combination teriyaki and shrimp tempura until I read a tip about having the best curry katsu? I am a huge fan of Ezo Giku so i decided to change course. Glad I did :) each course was served just in time and the miso soup was terrific. I must admit, the curry katsu did satisfy but the service was what I will be back for more than anything.

We went to Restaurant Miwa for sushi last week; *originally* we came to Hilo for Takenoko (we'd never been but Yelp reviews spoke highly of it) however they were booked for the night. Any other sushi was proving hard to find, so we expanded our search to surrounding areas. I should also say that earlier in the day we'd had an impromptu, hours-long, very tiring hike* through Volcanoes National Park and we had to drive all the way up to Hilo to get sushi...that's how badly we wanted it. Anyways our server was prompt, attentive, friendly, and the food was equally delightful. Though I didn't feel that the portions were terribly large compared to most sushi I get (that or the prices were a bit on the high side) we were very satisfied with the meal, and I would definitely go back. *and if it sounds like I'm complaining about Volcanoes, I'm not; this Nat'l Park, like all that I've been to, was well worth the time spent

Came here for dinner on a Saturday at 8:00. Had the miwa special roll for an appetizer. The sushi here is good, not bulky or over powering. I got the yamakake soba, cold. This noodle dish has yam in the sauce, which makes it slightly sweet and thick. My wife had the tempura soba. The tempura is made with corn panko, which gives the tempura a nice yellow color and sweet flavor. Our meals came with the typical tsukemono (pickled cabbage), a typical Japanese condiment served at any Japanese restaurant. Good service, water was refilled frequently, all of the staff are always friendly here.

One of my favorite restaurants in hilo!! Their fish specials are always on point. I also love their katsu, tempura, & sushi.

Sushi was fresh and delicious. Chef Shige had fresh otoro from Japan that was amazing! My daughter almost always eat udon at japanese restaurants, and she said it was the best she's ever had. All in all, everything hit the spot and We will definitely be back!

The food is delicious, and the service is good. Servers always keep water and tea cups full. The price matches the quality of food, which is good, but if you're looking for something cheap, this restaurant is not the place to go. I'd recommend Restaurant Miwa for established families who like high-level Japanese (and local Japanese) food. I especially like the pork shogayaki (ginger pork) and the fried oysters. Ask for Kyle's special sauces with the oysters. The tempura is savory and crisp. My favorite dessert is the haupia cream pie. Delicious!

  • Janna B.

Got there right on time for our reservation. Got seated at our table right away, but NO MENUS available to look at. Really? Service was so slow, we waited 38 minutes before someone even came to our table to take our drink orders! I must say that the waitress was nice and hospitable, but 38 minutes?? And only because I flagged the bus boy down and asked why no one was taking our order? It wasn't even that busy, even for Hilo. It was a Wednesday night. Not impressed, food was ok. Maybe the slow service made the food not as good as I was expecting. It wasn't cheap either, had nitsuke butterfish which was $24.95, for two SMALL pieces! Was not happy to have to pay the included 18% tip for that kind of service.

I only order 2 things from here (but I've sampled a lot more and everything I've tried is delish!) -- the soba/tempura combo or the chicken katsu curry. And let me tell you, their chicken katsu curry is THE BEST I have EVER had!!! If a restaurant I go to has chicken katsu curry on the menu, I try it JUST to compare it to Miwa's. And I have NEVER come across another as good as theirs! -- Thin white meat chicken breast, NO fat or stringy parts, tender and perfectly breaded and crispy, smothered in curry with with just the right amount of heat, sauteed onions, over a generous portion of rice with tsukemono on the side. Sooo good! Overall, good food, good service, nice atmosphere. I love dining here :) My fav place to go for traditional Japanese food.

During a recent stay in Hilo, I came across this Japanese Restaurant. The staff is very friendly and really gives you the feeling as if your eating dinner in there home. I really appreciated the sever who did not just give the specials, but also was willing to get the food prepared anyway we would like. I ordered the Deep Fried Menpachi and asked for it to be extra crispy. It was great to have a restaurant be so catering to how you want your order prepared. When the food arrived my fish was exactly how I ordered it. This was a great experience finding this japanese restaurant tucked in the middle of Hilo town.

This is my son's favorite restaurant in Hilo. Sushi never disappoints. Except when they are out of something. Shucks--I wanted negitoro today, but they were all out. I had yosenabe tonight. Full of warmth and vegetables. Great for a rainy day.

5 stars for the sashimi! I go here for the sashimi! It is super fresh and delicious. I cannot tell you about the rest of the menu, but if you enjoy sashimi (not fancy rolls, etc) then this is your place! To the other reviewer....Yeah, Hilo has cockroaches, so what, its normal! If you didn't find it in any other restaurant that you went to, you probably didn't go into the kitchen, where they really like to hang out :)

I like this place. Pork shoga is my favorite entree and the rolls are good too. Mirigsi clams are good when they have them.

Tucked in the back corner of this mall between the Waiakea area and downtown Hilo, Miwa offers traditional Japanese food that doesn't attempt to be something it is not. It is simple Japanese food without the thrills. It offers a stellar menu and a good ambiance, however the service was so/so and the prices a little on the higher end for what you get. The menu features your standard Japanese entree fare, as well as sushi and other appetizers should the mood strike you. Our group all opted for their combination plates and I found the fish a little on the drier side, the sashimi a little too vein, and the katsu to be ok. The flavors were ok, however nothing to stood out to wow me. I stole a piece of teriyaki beef from a friend which was tender and decent, but still missing the final punch. The tempura was ok, however a little on the greasier side (and don't say its because it is deep fried), this put new meaning to greasy tempura. They offer good sushi that is well done and probably the one highlight of their menu. The sake/wine/beer selection is also well done, although a little on the pricier side. The ambiance is comfortable with tables spread out and good for smaller parties and for larger groups. It is simple, homestyle, and just downright comfortable. Parking is readily available in front of the center. Service was a wash for me. The staff certainly know their menu and are very welcoming. However, their inattentiveness and the fact that they seemed a bit understaffed and harried just couldn't overcome the welcoming/wonderful factor. Overall if the mood for Japanese food strikes you, it is certainly a decent place to check out. However, considering the prices, it sort of just puts a damper on it all.

Me like!! Solid food, this place reflects Hilo through and through... Nothing too fancy, nothing too catchy, just feeding the masses... Sushi is ono, as is their chirashi bowl. Nice people that work hard to put out a good product...

There are 3 well-known Japanese restaurants in Hilo that we knew of (Nihon, Miyo and Miwa). This one was the last to try. We should have waited. It is in a strip mall, and a bit hard to find. You have to go in the mall. I am giving it 2 stars, as our server was personable and she did care. The food is definitely not worth mentioning. We were seated immediately. The ambiance is a hole in a wall Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar in the middle of the restaurant. There were lots of local Hilo people eating, so I thought we had found a good place to dine on some local Japanese cuisine. Not so.... I ordered the misoyaki butterfish - $24.50. This is a lot for butterfish, so I was expecting a nice thick piece of butterfish, but instead got 2 scrawny pieces of butterfish scraps with a thick miso sauce over the top. It was disgusting. I was so hungry, I ate it. But is was almost inedible. The rice was mushy. The miso soup was probably the best item I had, but even that, as compared to other miso soups, did not compare. My bear ordered the yosenabe and said it was bland. He was hungry too, so he ate his meal. Bear also ordered a grilled mirugai, which was not bad. Rating - 5 on a scale of 1-10. I was so unhappy with my meal that I decided to have a green tea ice cream to make my sorrows go away. Dessert does this for me. It helps the pain. The server was very attentive and kept filling my water and hot tea.. I drink a lot, so I do appreciate when server is attentive and can keep up with my camel drinking abilities. I would rate all three restaurants in this order: #1 - Miyo #2 - Nihon #3 - Miwa - don't go. You have 2 other better Japanese restaurants to choose from.

We ate here on a friday night and had high expectations for a sushi joint in hilo. Miwa disappointed. It was not busy when we arrived about 6pm but more people came closer to 7. It seems to be fairly well regarded by locals so i dont know if we are missing something. Our server was very friendly, attentive and patient with our questions about the menu. My wife and i both got beers (pretty good selection and price). We were given a dish of pickled cabbage (i think meant to be an appetizer) which was not good. We purposefully ordered locally caught fish. My wife got a spicy tuna roll. The tuna was grey and the amount of fish was stingy. It tasted ok, not great, but we started feeling weird about the quality of the food. She ordered a shrimp tempura roll as well which she said was ok. The tempura was really yellow... also weird. I got a few pink snapper sushi. It was good but not outstanding. My wife thought it was fishier than normal. I also got oxtail soup which was on special. It was ok but i wouldn't order it again. Not enough mushrooms, and too much cilantro. Last on the food front we got a scoop of red bean ice cream. It tasted like cream cheese with an afterthought of some red bean flavor. Boring and not what we were expecting. The prices were about normal, but considering the quality I think they are on the high side. The worst part of the experience was the terrible christmas music. We were willing to put up with it in hopes that we would get some good food. By the end was just wanted to get the heck out of there and get a drink to try to forget this meal.

I love Miwa's! Very convenient, amazing service, great food, lots of it, and at the right price! Miwa's is entirely on par with the local favorite Miyo's but with a few advantages: 1) Miwa's staff is WAYYY more friendly and helpful. 2) You don't need a reservation or have to wait an hour to get seated. We've always gotten seated right away, unlike Miyo's where we've been turned away the last 5 times because there was no room.

Have been there many times - service is always good. Waitress with the kimono is sharp! She doesn't write the order down -pure memory! Went there recently & had the wild salmon special. It was good but there was only 1 piece & it was small - cost was $25!

I haven't been to Restaurant Miwa for years. We used to travel to Hilo FREQUENTLY to visit my brother's family in Mountain View. We went to Restaurant Miwa on a Saturday night. It was very busy. Although we didn't have any reservations, they accomodated our party of fivel The food was Delicious and very reasonablly priced. I recommend Restaurant Miwa.

Came here for lunch and found both flavor and service excellent. We were greeted and seated right away. Menus and water came quickly thereafter. I had the lunch special for $13.95 which allows you to chose two main items from eight options. I had the sashimi and saba shioyaki. Came with a salad and miso soup and free rice refill if needed. I learned that each month there is a Japanese beer special for the large bottle. This month in July, you can get a large bottle of SAPPORO for just $5.50! That is just $2 more than the supermarket price. Bargain. Couldn't help it but to order a Sapporo during a lunch meeting... Atmosphere is a bit old, but after all, this restaurant has been around for 29 years.

I love it when a location that was happening back in the day is now "off the beaten path." This place used to be another well-loved coffee shop (not coffee shop a la Starbucks, but rather a diner). Isn't most of Hilo off the beaten path? Yes, that's what makes it so special. I LOVE this place--the combination dinners are amazing. Try the fresh fish options too, deep fried menpachi or ono prepared any way you like... Fresh and authentic Hawai'i Japanese food, fast and friendly service...If you're local, you go here and always run into someone you know.

Do not confuse restaurant Miwa with MIYO's (which is nearby but closed on Sundays). Miwa = BAD MIYO's = AWESOME Restaurant Miwa is average Japanese food. We ordered bufferfish and curry (pictured above), both were just so-so. The sashimi combo was expensive and NOT FRESH. We were really disappointed by our $60 meal. Luckily, the next day we found Miyo's down the street - much cheaper and better food. We loved Miyo's so much that we went back two nights in a row. Bottom line - Skip Restaurant Miwa and head to MIYO's instead!

Came here on Valentine's Day - it was one of the only restaurants open in Hilo, go figure. Anywho, typical Japanese restaurant. Ate a bunch of decent but not spectacular sushi rolls (Spider, Dragon, Rainbow). Agedashi Tofu was not good - not much flavor in the broth, not many pieces of tofu. Inari sushi for $7 was not good - rice had little flavor. Amaebi nigri was pretty good. Other people in our party had the chicken tofu, teri chicken and yosenabe. Service was good, but probably won't come back here unless someone else was paying.

Cockroach. Crawling. ON MY TABLE. My friends liked their food and for some reason were totally willing to overlook this giant nasty health hazard and enjoy the dining experience. Well, I'm not that big of a person, okay? If I'd wanted creepy-crawly company I could have just had dinner at my house where I could watch the Cockroach Cabaret every night of the week, thanks to my roommates' complete and total denial of the existence of our refrigerator for storage of food items. I know it's a tropical climate. But if I managed to eat at every other restaurant in Hilo without this problem, why should Miwa's get special dispensation? It's not like good Japanese is hard to find around town.

12/18/07: Off the beaten path and tucked in the back of a strip mall ("Hilo Shopping Center," back behind Kope Kope cafe), this restaurant has been a mainstay of the local japanese community. I went with my family for dinner to celebrate the holiday season. The restaurant was quite packed, but no worries, we had reservations made earlier that day. Restaurant is a family business, if you look closely you'll figure out the four family members that work here. Our dinner started off with a sashimi combo platter as an appetizer, probably around 12-14 unique pieces. I had the ahi, yellow tail and salmon, the fish tasted great and very fresh. I order the salmon teriyaki, the meal came with miso soup (red soup base, very tasty) and a couple small side dishes (seaweed and pickled veggies). When my meal arrived, the presentation was alittle disappointing, it was served on a simple plastic plate with two salmon pieces and a side salad was on the same plate. The teriyaki fish was on par, not exceptional, yet better than it looked. Anyways, the other main courses at the table looked great (grilled ahi belly, chicken sukiyaki, stuffed shrimp). Overall, I would come back here to try more of their sashimi assortments (what they are known for). The carry a very wide selection of imported beers, probably the most diverse I've seen here in Hilo.

This is possibly the best traditional Japanese restaurants I have ever been to. They have everything from sushi to chicken katsu, to teriyaki..... and it's all FANTASTIC, although it's a little but pricey, especially Hawaii, where you can find Japanese food in abundance and for great prices. I've been to Miwa several times, and I have tried most of their sushi, which is wonderful (although they don't have many special rolls, and they stick to mostly nigiri and tradtional sushi) and I've had some of their dinner entrees. One that really stood out flavor and presentation-wise was a big barbecued unagi steak witha side of wasabi mashed potatoes (they give you an option of rice and mashed potatoes and since I had never had unagi in somewhat of a "western" style I decided to try it out) and it was amazing.... the best eel I have EVER had. If you like quality Japanese food in a traditional setting, I definitely recommend Miwa as one of my personal favorites.
