My wife works in Keaukaha so she found out about this place and we ate there a couple times. I thought it was OK, though I did love the duck here, it's better than most, if not all, Chinese restaurants on Hawaii Island, and the shrimp is good too. But most of the food in the hot bins are typical local style, much like L and L or Chinese Number One Barbecue. Then recently we had family visit from Hong Kong, Washington DC, Logan UT, and Texas, all show up - and some don't eat meat, some are gluten free, some won't eat eggs, etc etc etc. We took them to Ocean Front Chinese Kitchen and everyone was really happy. And I learned to go beyond the cafeteria style stuff and order off the menu. I don't even know what my Chinese family said or ordered, as it was all done in Chinese, but they were all over the menu and it was all really good, and the cake noodles were great. It's handy heading to or from the beaches in Keaukaha and I now recommend it to all our friends and visitors. They only have a couple tables inside, one outside and it's very casual dining. The place doesn't look like much, but it's now joins the A-list of Hilo restaurants!

Hands down one of the best Chinese food places in town. Not only is staff are very friendly and helpful, but their food is amazing! I really enjoyed their noodles, egg fu yong and crispy chicken! Although parking might be a little hard, its definitely worth it!

3 stars A-OK. I'll go back. Service was the highlight. They're on the left on the way down the road to Keaukaha. **If you are visiting Hilo you should definitely drive out this road, it's lined with a series of amazing and popular protected beach parks and fish ponds with good swimming spots and gorgeous views, although the water can be cold due to the fresh water bubbling up from the coastline into the salt water.** Anyway, back to Ocean Front Kitchen... ocean front it's not! Their take-out menu more accurately describes their location as "next to Gaspro." The sign outside announces "lunch/dinner $5." That's for a mini plate with one entree. I got regular plate with choice of two entrees from the steam table, that was $7. You can pick white or brown rice or noodles...the noodles were...OK. Pork adobo was excellent... huge chunks of tender pork. Orange chicken was not so good...I was there late in the afternoon, and think it had been sitting too long... also I bit into several pieces of chicken cartilage. Anyway... the woman working the counter was just AMAZING, she had the biggest smile and was so helpful. Really first-class attitude and aloha. She packed my plate with food and then got me a huge glass of ice water, which was much appreciated! The decor is "Hilo hole-in-the-wall" which is a plus for me. (I prefer it to "anywhere-USA Corporate Panda.") There's a picnic table outside, steam table and open kitchen and 2-3 tables inside. It was all acceptably clean, the open kitchen looked nice and neat and a man was patiently grinding pork for their pork hash dumplings. (Not that it's TOTALLY spotless, the door glass and air conditioner controls were two places I noticed that needed a little attention. I would grade it an 85/100 on cleanliness. Perfectly acceptable for what it is.) I think the key is probably to order off the menu, so it's cooked fresh. Entrees look really affordable, most are in the $5-$7 range... so that would probably solve the issue of something having sat too long in the steam trays. Also, in case you have been searching for something different, you can get "cooked salted duck egg" $1 each or $5/box. Didn't try them.

it's closed, shut down, no longer in operation, for sale, unopen, unenterable, not available to the hungry, empty, locked, out of order, ready for new inhabitants, dark inside, inoperable, over and done, a distant memory, etc.

This is a true hole in the wall and I was hesitant to go there at first, but since I work near the place, I once went in while in a hurry to get lunch and have been going back ever since. Large portions and good prices. Food is good Chinese with a home cooked touch. They have a buffet or will cook to order. Run by a local family that is polite and they keep the little place very clean. I highly recommend it.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
