I truly loved our stay at Maureen's. The house is beautiful and a great location for the East side of the island. Sadly I came down with a nasty cold on our first day, but Auntie Mo took great care of me! She made me tea with fresh island honey, got me a whole box of super effective dissolving tablets and left me feeling very well cared for. Breakfast was very filling and delicious with your choice of multiple island syrups like coconut or papaya to try with your waffles or pancakes. There is an adorable cat named seabiscuit who kept us company and slept with me while I was under the weather. Everything that Maureen recommend for us was perfect...she truly has the best advice. Additionally she provides the best guide book on the island for you to use during your stay, as well as coats (for Mauna Kea), coolers, beach towels, anything you need. The house was clean and has a great vibe. I couldn't say enough good things about our stay. Just make sure that if you have any trouble with stairs to book rooms on the lower level. Definitely recommend!

Slow down because if you blink then you'll miss it AND there's an adorable cat named, Seabiscuit, on the property. Check in is normally in the evening but our timing worked out perfectly as I wanted to get a head start on the day. Maureen greeted us immediately and gave us quite the welcoming tour of the B&B as well as it's history. If you're looking to escape from the city life, then this is the best place to start. The room cost was quite affordable and there's free WiFi. It does have that "staying over your grandparents house" feel. The house has been around since the 1930s but it's well maintained. There are signs to remind the guests not to puy wet towels on furniture. If you bring a book or two, you'll find a few great spots to just disappear into a journey of the imagination. At night youll have front row seats to a koki frog concert but if you're not into that, Maureen keeps earplugs in the common area. They eventually became white noise for me. You can walk out to the beach across the street if you'd rather not stay in. Maureen gets guests from around the world and if you give her a moment she tell you their stories. If your lucky, she'll also share a treat, most likely something sweet that she was given. She is the most gracious host, down to earth, friendly, and generous. She gives great advice for both sightseeing and eating spots. You'll feel as though you've lived here for years. And we were only here for one night. Must return some day.

This mansion has so much character, as does Maureen. She was so helpful and awesome! She provided us with a copy of "Hawaii, The Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty, to use during our trip, and we found it very helpful. It lists all the beaches and attractions on the Big Island. We stayed four nights here and enjoyed every minute of it. The breakfast was good. I thoroughly enjoyed her quiche, and I was blown away at how good the fruit tasted. I would absolutely stay here again!

The mansion is great, the beds are huge, Maureen has lots of cool advises and is really there for her guests. Its important to note, that the place is close to the jungle so there will be coqui noises always, I assume. The next time I would go to Hilo, I would love to check out her place again, but then again, personally, I might not be the biggest Hilo fan.

This place is ok if you don't mind certain things. The price is right & it's close enough to Hilo town where you don't feel you're in Boonyland. Located along the main (or perhaps only) road it's not difficult to find or park at all. The place is a cute, albeit, large old house with lots of history. The interior was very nice & nostalgic. Much effort was made towards authenticity...everything in the house was old & well preserved. There's even a rule that you don't hang your wet towels on the furniture lest the finish be damaged. There was no bling factor here...no jaccuzi, no pool, etc. You just have to enjoy the special feeling here & fresh sea breeze & the fact that modern civilization was just down the road if you need it. The downfall of this place was the plumbing...The bathroom we had had no overhead spigot. You had to grab the shower head, which was attached to a hose connected & hung over the lower spigot then hold it over you to rinse...then it broke off! The bathtub was virtually useless. We were allowed to use another bathroom on the opposite side of the house, which was more modern, but it too was on the verge of falling apart. Not to mention the water wasn't always hot. Maureen, our host, was nice upfront, but seemed a bit stand-off-ish at times & not present at all most of the time, which made things seem strange & we felt lost when the spigot broke & no one was there to help. Breakfast was generally good & plentiful, though you would probably feel more satisfied by going to Ken's just a few minutes away. Overall decent place & close to town.

Very nice house, eclectic setting. Didn't meet Maureen as she was indisposed, but her husband was very laid-back and friendly. The house is older, and has all sorts of interesting things decorating the walls and shelves. It was clean (as clean as any house is) and the rooms comfortable. Located very near downtown Hilo. Breakfast in the morning was delicious, belgian waffles, fresh fruit, yummy coffee, just the right way to start your day off.Very reasonably priced. If you are not super high maintenance and looking for a relaxed place to stay, kind of like staying at your Grandparent's house, this is perfect!

Words can't describe how truly cool this place is. It's an amazing older home, designed by a well known architect in the 20's I believe. Maureen is a very sweet women, and I felt right at home the moment I entered this cool house. The price is extremely competetive. After reading some reviews about the place not being clean enough, I gotta say, that's just not true... This is a mellow and charming B&B in an, not a $1,000 a night penthouse suite, so be real here.. but saying it's not clean is a mis-representaion, it's very clean, and very cared for. I highly recommend this to anyone considering a stay in Hilo.
