I have to give this place a four-star. It is by far, kind of sadly, but by far the best place in town to get a good traditional burrito. Carne Asada lovers can sub it with any of their burritos. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Just moved from Cali, this place satisfied my craving after all others in town failed.

Decent tex-mex. The cashier was nice but inexperienced. There's a $5 promotional menu (current Sept 2013) but be sure to note that it doesn't include items on the main menu. The $5 chicken burrito is not the same as the regular menu chicken burrito ($8+) because it is smaller and has sour cream instead of guacamole. We ordered the Sandy Beach (by request only) which is a vegan/vegetarian burrito with beans and rice, and the Lahaina chicken burrito. The Lahaina was tasty enough but it sagged because it wasn't fully filled with ingredients. The salsa bar is probably the best thing going for this place. Multiple kinds of hot sauces, limes, onions, pickled spicy onions, and jalapenos. The complimentary chips come warmed but are generic and not especially good.

A good start for good tacos. If you ask for the fish tacos plain and then add your own toppings, you'll have a better chance of tasting a good taco.

Maui Mex bowls are so good! Nachos are excellent! I love their salsa bar! They have the best tomatillo salsa...and you must try their pineapple paradise salsa. This is very good for fast food!

what sucks... you're sitting in the mall hallway what's good... they serve beer, counter help are very sweet and friendly, food (vegetarian burrito) was delicious and meal was inexpensive overall. I ordered the burrito "dry" (no cheese) and loaded it up with salsas from the fixin's bar. Free refills from "serve yourself" soda machine... I drank about 12 iced teas after I ignored the "diablo" rating on the pineapple salsa. They have a tempting poster advertising $5 special menu items... I asked the woman at the counter, is the $5 burrito as big as the regular ones (about $9)... she candidly explained, "no, it's about half the size, they just put it on a tiny plate when they took the picture." Loved her!

Food is ok. I'd say go to Lucy's for better Mexican food. I do like that they support the Men of Strength Stand Strong campaign though.

I always eat the Baja fish tacos. They are delish! Chimichangas are great and definitely have a banana chingalinga if you can.

Their $5 menu is pretty good. I loved the fruit salsa the most!!!

I love the breakfast choices at Maui Tacos. Also the $5 specials are pretty good too. My favorite place to eat in the mall. The only down side is that the salsa bar may not be always fully stocked. few times I went there and the salsa bar was practically all empty and no one filled it... I love the pineapple salsa... yummmmmmmmm

Maui Tacos is hit or miss. Fortunately it's been more hit than miss with me but it depends who's working I'd say. They've been around for several years and are one of the few mainstays in the Prince Kuhio Plaza (and the only place that serves alcohol there!) The "Lahaina" has been my typical choice.

Really disappointing place to try and satisfy my mexican craving! I had the la perouse burrito (chicken & steak filled) - the meat was very, very overcooked! It was completely charred on the outside and dry inside. The salsa bar was also sub par, the pineapple salsa appeared to only be the pureed salsa from a can, no hints or traces of jalapeno, cilantro or other salsa ingredients. The salsa verde was very runny, it had a nice bite to it if they just didnt water it down. I didn't try any of the red salsas because they just looked like tomato paste from a can.

The best place to eat in Prince Kuhio. $6 specials by Chef Alfonso! The plates I always get are the enchilada suisas and the crispy tacos. For the amount and the price I always leave satisfied. The best thing, however, is their salsa bar! Try mixing the pineapple salsa with the green tomatillo salsa. You won't regret it :)

Love this place! Located right in Prince Kuhio Plaza. If you want some Mexican food, it's best you come here instead of Taco Bell. Now they have table service. They were doing this as of Cinco de Mayo according to one of the workers. I tend to order the Lahaina Burrito with Grilled Chicken all the time only because it's my favorite dish to eat. I order that "wet" meaning it's smothered in Enchilada sauce. The Lahaina is charbroiled chicken or shredded beef with maui tacos rice, cheese and fresh guacamole. It comes with Tortilla chips too. My wife gets the Chingalinga Platter with Chicken. Basically it's chicken cheese and spices rolled in a Flour Tortilla that's deep-fried and served with guacamole and sour cream. I find their Salsa bar is the best around. I mix the Tomatillo salsa and the regular Tomato salsa together for a guaranteed knock out punch in my mouth, lol!!!

Although a little pricey for being a mall food court eatery, they have been all around consistently tasty for me in the nearly 15 years (cray!) I've been coming to this place. Homeboy who is the main cook for as long as I can remember (ten years) is a sweetie who goes above and beyond to make your food how you want it. He comes out and talks to you personally and genuinely cares about his product, which is and invaluable asset to this place. And (finally!!) they have done a major overhaul of their menu, added a ton of new items and more variety, which means I finally can enjoy shrimp tacos in Hilo!! Other locations had that and fish tacos for years, and that we too can enjoy now gives them the fourth star, in my opinion. Check out the new menu, it's a lot better. Also, I'll leave you with one word (okay, two).. Cotija cheese!!

Pretty decent food. Beer in the mall! Tasty Mexican food, but you are still on the island. So, don't expect the best. But this is a food court in a mall. It is tasty.

Maui Tacos is the best Mexican food that can be found in Hilo... Possibly even on the island.... Maui tacos isn't really authentic, but they're very good considering what they are. They don't claim to be authentic and they are everything that they say they are. Prices are "aight", around $7 for a burrito, which is equivalent to a Bay Area burrito (since Hawaii's a little more expensive than the "yay"). My fiancee always orders tacos and their meat is seasoned very well. I always get the Lahaina burrito and eat the whole thing everytime. The WHOLE thing. Makes me feel like a beast, especially when there's always a couple next to me sharing their burrito while I inhale mine whole. A couple times I asked for salsa inside but got nothing. They also once suggested sour cream to subsitute me not wanting guac, which was a great offer! But, there was no sour cream and I found guacamole in my burrito. I almost never get salsa when I order it dry with "salsa inside please!" I guess wet burritos are the thing out here. Another reason why I love this place is that the food is always served hot! I can't stand a burrito with cold rice or unmelted cheese. I mean, these burritos are so hot that I can't even hold onto it. I love it! This place would get 5 stars if they didn't screw up my order the majority of the time. But, they get 4 stars because they are still very good and manage to be consistent enough. I never expect more or less of them. Mmmm.... Maui Tacos, I think I'm going to go eat there now....

We wanted to eat dinner here on a Sunday at 6:30 pm, but it was a no-go! How can they be closed at dinner time?! Hello, Big Island people, where do you eat on a Sunday night if everything is closed?!!! I was sad to not have eaten Maui Tacos, with their awesome salsa bar! This location is particularly cool because they have a beer "garten". Yes! I can drink beer while eating Maui Tacos, even in a shopping mall! Can't do that in Kailua on Oahu... Guess I can't do it here either if THEY'RE NOT OPEN.

best fish tacos ive ever had. best nachos ive ever had. the sweetened green tea was so good. the pork taco was mmmmm, the best too. the salsas to choose from were really good. im a picky eater, and this is exactly what i needed after surfing. cant wait to go back again once i go back to the big island. the banana desert was insane too. not even exaggerating on any of this...

Food is so-so. I ordered a double soft taco with chicken with lettuce and cheese. I could have made this taco at home with better sauces. I was not impressed but will try the burrito next time.

Used to love this place but just went back recently & was quite dissapointed. Taste is still good but did not feel like we got our $'s worth. Three dollars + for a taco that looked like a dollars worth of food. :( I hope they realize that even though we like it, we'll think twice of eating here again...

i never would have tried this place out if it wasnt for yelp! wonderful vegetarian selection and is tastier than baja fresh and rubios. their vegetarian burritos are very good as well as their enchiladas. it tastes so good with the potatos. the workers here were very nice too which is nice because im a tourist and a white girl lol.

Way better than Taco Bell! Hehe. Happy we have Maui tacos here. Fresh ingredients, friendly staff located in the prince kuhio plaza. They serve beer too. Nice spot to go and get a quick bite.

They need to pack up their bags and head back out to Maui. Not sure if it was the day I went, Sunday... it was busy... Hunger Games was opening... there were more than 4 people in line, but the wait was extremeley long and the result was underwhelming. My husband's quesadilla had a sprinkle of cheese and a handful of sad excuses for chicken. My fish burrito was choke full of sour cream and tiny bits of fish- ew. I've frequented this place quite a few times but this is, by far, the worst experience I've had. Not going here ever again if I can help it. Then again... it's Hilo.. there are exactly 2 places to get casual Mexican... I may not be able to hold up that threat.

place is alright. it doesnt really look like workers care about the food or in general. food made somewhat slappy....but still doent taste that bad. I love Maui Taco, and on Oahu I am a regular customer (I did not record it on yelp before) so I am kind of picky on how its made.

Not just a regular mall food court place to eat, Maui Tacos was sooooo delish! The salsa bar! The Burrito's! The Tacos! and my Favorite the Bowls!

Somehow I remember this place being a lot better. My friend and I both ordered fish tacos here for lunch. They tasted like they were made from frozen cod or something. Sorry Maui Tacos, but you have really gone down hill.

don't expect traditional, & don't expect fast food. Kinda pricey for mall food but it satisfies the mexican food craving. spicy & unique salsa bar. Great island-infused menu selection. ginormous burritos (get it wet if you want it smothered in sauce and cheese). the bbq pulled pork is great. faves are: chicken chingalinga, nachos, and lahina or honolii burrito.

We didn't hate the food and it was tasty enough to finish the bowl but certainly not as WOW as described. This is a food court shop and wouldn't go as far as calling it a restaurant. It's counter ordering and seat and clean up after yourself. It was way better than the corn dog on a stick that was across the hall but I wouldn't drive across the island to eat the fish tacos.

Maui Tacos is located near Sears and the theater in the Price Kuhio Plaza. They have surprisingly good Mexican food, with a tropical twist. They have several vegetarian burritos- even vegan ones! They also have good fish burritos, and serve beer which is kind of unusual for a mall, fast-food restaurant. I also like them because they are pretty cheap and the food is healthy. I was looking at their website and noticed that they have one in Salinas. I'll have to check that out someday...

Mmmmmmmmm Maui Tacos. Or really, Maui Wet Burritos, because that's all I ever ate. Get the Haiku and eat half now, half later... probably half an hour later, you pig. And make sure you load up on their salsas (tomatillo has the most flavor, if not the most kick). Conveniently located in Prince Kuhio Plaza so you can go shopping at American Eagle Outfitters.... AGAIN. Maui Tacos is really the diamond in the rough at that place.

After hearing so many good things about Maui Tacos i was really disappointed when I ate there. I've gone twice, once i got the taco salad, although it looked really good there wasn't anything special about it and was somewhat flavorless even with the dressing they put on it and was way over priced. The other time a friend and I split some nachos, they were very plain barley sprinkled with cheese and seemed to of been microwaved. They were also overpriced and a big disappointment. It makes me wonder if i just got unlucky because it seems everyone has good things to say. Regardless I won't be spending my money again.

I am surprised that I will be the first to review this restaurant. Even though they are in the local mall, this is a pretty good place to get Mexican food in Hilo. Now, is it as good as you would get in Austin TX or Tucson AZ, no. But it is darn good for the islands! Several of the dishes have an island flavor to them, be sure to try the Pineapple Salsa, that alone is worth a trip to Maui Tacos! I would say that this is a great place to eat if you want Mexican and you need a place to get good food pretty cheaply and fast.

YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!! The grilled Mahi Mahi tacos were outstanding and the salsa bar was also a hit. The combo plate is very large and too much to finish. It's in a mall next to a movie theater, which makes it convenient if you're shopping or catching a flick.... not exactly a destination in itself, but I would go out of my way to return.

So I tried this twice again before I reviewed and it seems like it is going downhill fast. I used to have great experiences here but the last few times were really bad. I had the steak burrito and it taste like the steak had gone bad, really bad, very gamey and actually disgusting. I took it back to the lady at the counter and she was not at all surprised. I then tried it again a month or so later just in case it was a fluke and got the pork taco and it was decent, but not that great at all. The only positive is the salsa bar with pineapple salsa. I would prefer taco bell to here!

Pretty good food, especially the Ahi (fish) tacos, chicken quesadillas, wet chicken lahaina burrito and a variety of fresh salsas.

Good food for a mall food court kind of place. A cheaper, lighter alternative to Reuben's if you're in the mood for a simple burrito and a beer. No margaritas, decent salsas including a nice pineapple salsa. If you're familiar with SF Bay Area style burritos, this place doesn't really come close but...it makes you miss SF burritos a bit less. Updated review in light of Lucy's being available in downtown Hilo now. Maui Tacos is still good if you're in a hurry, but the quality of food is nowhere near Lucy's.

Had the $5 Taco Salad. Filling stuff, about average, nothing special. A pretty good deal at $5. The 'Hot' salsa is pretty mild, the jalapenoes also mild. The horchata is about one star, thick & syrupy.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
