K's Drive In has good food, but what really makes this longtime establishment stand out are their twist cones. Their twist cones come in many different flavors - blueberry, strawberry, pineapple, chocolate, melona to name a few - and are twisted with vanilla soft serve. My favorite are the pineapple and blueberry twists. Every day there are two different flavors on the menu, so they're not all available at the same time. If K's only sold twist cones, I strongly believe they would still make profit. But other than twist cones, they also sell a variety of food. Stews, loco mocos, burgers, lunch plates...basically everything you would expect to find at a local eatery. This is not a restaurant that you are waited on. You order your food at the window, pick it up when it's ready, and find a table to sit at and eat. The seating is open and there is a lot of breeze coming through because there are no walls, only a roof to protect you from the rain. There is ample parking in their own private parking lot and I've always been able to get a parking spot, no matter how busy they were. K's Drive In has been around for a really long time and the place may seem like a little hole-in-the-wall, but don't let the exterior fool you from the little gold mine that rests here. It is definitely a local favorite. And if that isn't enough to sell you, there's a liquor store only a few steps away that is filled top to bottom with all types of alcohol ;)

We were in the Hilo area for like 2 weeks and went here 3 times. Ha. I don't really know why....I guess because it was cheap and authentic local vibes and the food was good and fast! I dare say we may have been the only "tourists" there each time. Staff were all laid back and super friendly. Burgers, legit. Spam loco, legit. All that. I do have a bone to pick with their "famous twists". That was kind of....errmm...gross. Sorry! The soft serve was good but the colored flavor goo was like whoa holy fake sweetness overpowering the otherwise creamy refreshing ice cream. Otherwise, all good.

best korean chicken in hilo. they havent changed since i was a little kid. their sauce is sooooo good. honestly, id be more devistated if they took that off the menu then their twist cones!

Had the cheeseburger and it was greasy but yummy! Fries were good too. A friend had the breaded pork chop with gravy and I think that was delicious. You can't beat the prices either! Will definitely come back if we visit again.

Was so disappointed!!! Ordered the Korean Katsu & smoke meat plate, horrible horrible horrible. The Korean katsu omg I don't even know where to start with it, not only tasted gross but looked disgusting! It wasn't even Katsu, it was something coated in some pieces of chicken but was just horrible. So was the smoke meat and onions, don't know how you would serve that to customers. EXTREMELY disappointed

Another hometown favorite. I like the gravy cheeseburgers and fries with the lilikoi juice

You just have to love the basic food and the great way they have been doing it for decades! Keep on doing it and I look forward to seeing you again soon. Aloha

Five stars for the twist cone. I cannot explain how good it is except IT IS!!!!! Seems like no one else has this killer treat. This is THE BEST cone ever invented. I go here for the twist cone and gravy burgers. Have not moved on beyond those two items. The is my place that I go to in Hilo to get the best.

Cannot go wrong with the cup cone ice cream. Plate lunch portions are super small, almost shameful for the $10 you pay for the plate. Almost walked down to Cheng's to get one No. 3 plate to show them what a $10 plate look like in Hilo! Come on K's, give what we paying for!
(1)Justin C.
Located next to the closed down bowling ally, this place offers some pretty good flavored ice cream. I got the lilikoi soft serve and this was a very good surprise. If you are in need of a cold treat, this place is the one to go for a quick escape!

Twist Cone is always the best, Pineapple is my favorite..Gravy burger, Kalbi and Chicken Papaya is always awesome!
(5)Sarah M.
Food is good (chicken papaya), but the service sucks. The girl that helped me was rude, unhappy, didn't even say thank you and seemed as if she hated her job!
(2)Kanoe I.
Best place for twist cones! I love how they came up with more flavors. Strawberry, Lilikoi, Blueberry, Coconut, Melona and Pineapple! They usually have two flavors of the day! Flavors always changing and best paired with hot french fries :)

What can I say? This is a popular local spot and I had to experience it. I tried the mixed combo plate and it was OK. I didn't particularly like the mac salad. It was kind of dry and bland. The kalua cabbage and shoyu chicken was tasteless and tasted kind of old. Nothing on the plate stood out and I just ended up offering it to what appeared to be a homeless or druggy local hauli. Then I noticed the gravy cheeseburger and pineapple vanilla twist soft serve ice cream. JACKPOT! The gravy cheeseburger was a hit with their hand-formed patty with american cheese topped in a wonderful gravy. Each bite was heaven. Then i ordered another one. BINGO! I ordered the pineapple-vanilla twist to end the experience on a sweet note. The icy desert was full of pineapple flavor with vanilla tones

The pineapple twist is AWESOME. Well worth a stop. The strawberry one was ok but it didn't have enough zing to it, and tasted a little more fake. But it was still pretty good. It may look like any other "yogurt" but it's way more than that. The gravy cheeseburger is good, but sorry, the patty itself doesn't compare to Blane's. I think I said Blane's burger tastes like it should be Grandma's burger (homemade goodness) and K's doesn't quite have it. But that said, it was still a great burger, with a perfect amount of gravy and melted cheese. Still quite awesome. Mmm. The menu is absolutely huge. i'm not sure quite how they manage to cook things from chinese sounding food, Hawaiian food, Filipino food, to different types of loco mocos and other foods. The selection seems endless. it's worth a stop for sure! and when you're done with the down home goodness, go into Kadota's Liquor Store and have some fun... 31 Yelps #3

I go to Itsu's for ice shave and gravy burgers, and I always go to K's for twist cones!! Best twist cones I've ever had. My favorite flavor is pineapple. I love the feel and atmosphere of this long-running family owned business. This is honest food and delicious. If you're looking for fancy food, go elsewhere and let the rest of us enjoy our twist cones, mixed plate, and other yummy kine food. I prefer to support independently standing restaurants/businesses instead of the chain places because I feel they are more deserving of my money. I'd rather support 1 owner with 1 business than 1+ owners with 8 locations. GO K'S!! K's Drive In is my favorite drive in restaurant.
(5)Aaron B.
Given the fact that K's is almost a 100% local eatery (tourists? what tourists??), their offerings are geared to the local palate. Not a darn thing fancy here just ono local grinds. The Mahi and Terry Beef plates are my go-to meals at K's. I've never had a bad experience in the dozens and dozens of times I've been here. Full Disclosure: I attended high school at St. Joseph's back in the 60's and first began patronizing K's waaaaay back then. It has changed little over the years (although I do miss the yellow duck!) You will find nothing the least bit fancy or pretentious at K's. In my opinion, K's is head and shoulders above Cafe 100, Low's, Blane's and the rest of the similar offerings in Hilo town. Go and Enjoy!! Visited July 2013

Stopped by for a quick bite and found really tasty burgers. The meat was tender and charred just enough to give each bit a slight crunch, but not taste the grill. The swirls, as everyone reports, are also very good and worth it.
(4)K M.
Love the twist cone- orange bang and lilikoi especially. The oxtail stew & soup, Thursday turkey plate, gravy cheese burger & chicken papaya are my favorites. The breakfasts are quick and reasonable. Try the sweet potato fries.
(5)Jeanson D.
I usually get the Tripe Stew which has never disappointed me. I'm always sad because by the time I'm finished with work or hungry they run out of what I would order. But I guess that just means the food was good enough to sell out. I always feel like I'm getting my money's worth.
(4)Amanda Z.
If you love soft serve ice cream, you gotta stop by K's Drive Inn! After scoping out several Hilo people's pictures of all kine flavors twisted with vanilla, I insisted that we go to K's during our last trip to Hilo. Yum, so glad we did! First time: strawberry twist... soooo refreshing and delicious! It was so good that I dragged everyone there again during the same weekend. The pineapple and melon flavors were also tasty. Not sure how the real food is, but the soft serve ice cream is yummmm!

This is the home of the TWIST CONE. Pineapple/ vanilla twist soft serve cone was ONO. Not gourmet, but everyone was ordering them, for good reason. Apparently a part of Mr K's empire, snuggled between his recycling center and his liquor store. My second visit and I'm bumping them up a star. 4 stars "Yay I'm a fan." Teri pork loco moco was incredibly inexpensive and not huge, but the right size portion, and good. Basically though it's about the twist cone. Window servers were very friendly and helpful. See their full menu here ksdrivein.com/cs/Satelli…

Live on Oahu but always make it a point to come here for the twist cone! Our goal is to come daily but made it every other day on this vacation. Twist cone: 10 million stars! Strawberry, pineapple and melona is my fav! Service: 20 million stars! Window cashiers are so nice and friendly to all! After the third time, they knew what we wanted to order... Lol! Love them... Love this place.

I had the local-favorite loco moco, and it was fine. Not bad, but definitely not worth writing home about.

We stopped here after visiting the Volcano and getting lost in Hilo while looking for food around 7 PM. The outdoor restaurant was filled with locals, and only a few other tourists. Everyone was friendly, and just doing their own thing. The menu was slightly confusing (we were unsure of what several items were), but the girl behind the counter was more than happy to explain everything for us. My friend and I split the combo, he got the Shoyu Chicken, and I got the Kalua Pig. Since we were not used to the humidity of the island, and tired from walking around all day, it was the perfect amount of food for two people, and only $8! The side pasta salad is also excellent, I wish it was a slightly bigger portion, but it's a side dish so what else can you expect. All in all, the next time I am on the big Island, and in Hilo, I am definitely going back here!! If you are looking for inexpensive, good food, and don't want to go somewhere super touristy, I highly recommend K's!

Found on Yelp and drove in from the volcano to grab dinner. Called on the way to see how late they were open (it was Superbowl Sunday, so everyone's hours were weird). I called at 7:30, they answered, "Umm....8:30." I thought it was odd because their website said open until 10:00, but whatever. We showed up right around 8:00 and they told us they were closed. I asked why they had just told me on the phone they'd be open until 8:30 and he said, "Something came up" and walked away. Couldn't have cared less about us. Yes, we're tourists, and maybe this place is great to locals, but I was EXTREMELY unimpressed.

Gravy cheese burger was alright. Found the gravy to be thin and lacking that deep flavor you come to expect with gravy for burgers and other stuff. Don't think I will eating here much anymore. The food has dipped a bit since I last ate here a few years ago.
(2)illy m.
I'd give it zero if I could. Save your money and go elsewhere. I ate 1 fry and 1 bite of my uber greasy burger.
(1)Matt F.
Top notch (for a drive-in). The food was not excellent by normal restaurant standards, but by grab-a-bite-of-greasy-burgers-and-fries standards, very good. Great burgers (small but under $3), crispy sweet potato fries, and lots of options. Try it out!
(4)Will F.
The girlfriends favorite place here on the big island. The teri beef is good and I've had every variety of loco mocos here and they were all awesome. A dependable place for great island comfort food.
(4)Karlie S.
The ice cream here is da bomb! Flavors change daily and you can find them listed at the order window. Go for the mixed and if they have pineapple that day, you're in luck!

Twist cones. While I've had a few other items at K's throughout the years, I don't recall what they were....their sign has a picture of a cone on it for a very good reason. K's has a unique sherbet/soft serve ice cream twist cone, that I keep coming back for on every visit to Hilo. The flavor changes daily. My favorite is strawberry and I'm very disappointed if I show up on a non-strawberry day. The mix of sherbet & soft serve is a unique one - the soft smooth vanilla soft serve complements the firm grainy icy cold sherbet - a perfect blend of unique flavors and textures. K's shares space with a liquor store and only has outdoor picnic table style seating. You'll share your space with ocassional birds flying through and local gentlemen hanging out on the corner table talking story. Typical local place. I hope everyone gets to experience their cones and I hope it's strawberry day when you do!

we were driving around the area and wanted to get some loco, cafe 100 was further so we settled on K's. i saw there "Specials" board and the first item was Mahi Loco. i figured i'd give it a try as i'd never even heard of Mahi-Mahi being in a Loco, and maaaaaan, it was so nice i had to go back twice! i went home, killed it in minutes, drove back and got another one (killed it in minutes too). my brother ordered watercress chicken and shoyu pork for the family. they said it was delicious. this place is known for their twists. but to me, mahi loco all day. pretty cheap too. i wouldn't hesitate to go back to this place and try other foods, after a couple of mahi locos of course.

I have mixed feelings about K's. It was a favorite teen hangout during my high school days along with Cafe 100. Both were run by families whose kids I ran around with back then. K's was also almost directly across the street from the gas station I worked at. On Saturdays, I would order my favorite plate lunch, pork teriyaki, by phone, often from "Mrs. K" herself. It cost all of $0.80 back then. That was over four decades ago. During the interim, both Mr. and Mrs. K have passed on. I have K's on my list of "must-dos" whenever I sneak into Hilo for business or R&R. The menu has expanded considerably, but the quality of the food seems to have gone down. It's still edible, but seems to have lost some of the "zest" I remember from days of yore. Or, it might well be that I've lost some memory cells. The menu of fountain drinks has likewise expanded to include passion fruit and other fruit flavors. No carbonated soda for me. French fries are so-so. Their loco-moco is a cut above Cafe 100 (better-tasting HB patty). 3.75 STARS, rounded up to Four (nostalgia bonus).

came here on a visit to Hilo from Kona and the food was delicious. I ordered the veggie wrap which was huge and fresh an also the Kahlua pig plate, both very filling. we also ordered a frosty cone, pineapple and vanilla, very refreshing for how hot it was. i believe in the coming weeks, they will be serving Ramen noodles too. should be a great edition to their already extensive menu. worth trying if you're in town.

Large menu full of local grindz and pretty affordable too.
