So sad that this place isn't on Oahu. Great food for a good price (for Hawaii). Lunch special is the way to go. Had the lamb curry and it was super tender at just the right spiciness. Hubby got the chicken tikka masala which was also super delicious. If you are in Hilo and want to get your fix for Indian, come here!!!

Words cannot describe how happy I am that Hilo finally has a good Indian Restaurant. I am heads deep with infatuation, and I don't think there's any chance of saving me. For $12.95 I got the lamb curry special. The naan was heavenly and the extra sides were everything and more, especially the yellow dahl. My friend had the $11.95 chickan tikka masala. We ate everything so fast we didn't even bother to ask one another if they wanted to try. It was that good.

Awesome food! This has become one of our go to places for take-our dinner. Everything is delicious and we always get an order or two of their delicious garlic naan. Friday's are great because you can also swing by Island Naturals next door to pick a bottle of wine or beer which is 10% off on Fridays.

I love their lentil soup. Great flavors, good portion and a good price. I've been trying to duplicate it at home but can't quite nail the exact flavor of it. I've eaten at both the Kona and Hilo locations and it is always really good. The lunch special is a great deal and even better with the kamaaina discount they offer. The service at the Hilo location was a bit slow when they opened but it has improved greatly since. I've never had an entree I didn't like and the naan bread is killer. I highly recommend this place if you like Indian food or want to experience new flavors. I think it's great that more locals are open to experiencing new flavors and healthier food options than your dime a dozen plate lunches that dominate this town. All we need is a legit Mediterranean joint now.

Kamana kitchen serves delicious Indian food. It is flavorful, simple and the portions are filling. No fancy spices and tastes just like home cooked delicious fare. We tried the Dal makhani and aloo matar. Both were just perfect. We again went the next day and tried dal tadka, Chana masala and paneer kadhai. I loved the first two. Paneer was average. The samosas were to die for. The place is a little on the expensive side. Typically a meal for two with no beverages would cost around $40-$50. But considering that you are in Hawaii and the quality of food, it's all worth it. The service was awesome too. The servers were friendly and would accommodate any special requests. TIP: The food is generally prepared mild. So if you like your Indian food spicy, you have to mention it to them and they dish it out just perfect! A must try for visitors to the Big Island. They also have their restaurant in Kona. I will definitely be going back.

My husband and I came in for dinner and the restaurant was about half full. We were seated immediately and given water but it took a little while for them to give us menus. I ordered the Chicken Makhani, Lamb Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, (all medium heat) Garlic Naan, and Paratha. The food took a while but was totally worth the wait. The Chicken Makhani was cooked perfectly and was so delicious!! The Lamb Tikka Masala was also good and had quite a bit of Lamb in it. The Aloo Gobi was ok. The Garlic Naan was very good. The Paratha never came out and I think it's because the order was never put in. I didn't ask about it because we had more than enough food for the two of us. The food is amazing here and the staff are very friendly. Although the service was a little slow, we will definitely be back.

YUM! We were in a group of 6 with two meat eaters and the rest of us vegetarian. The vegetarians decided to do things family-style so we all got to try a bit of everything. We ordered the veggie samosas, vegetable korma, baigan bharta, vegetable biryani, some paneer dish in a cream sauce, some naan, and some rice. No idea what the meat-eaters ordered. Everything was delicious! We ordered everything medium spicy and it was really hot! Keep that in mind if you are sensitive to spicy food. Lots of water was needed to put out the collective fires burning in our mouths and the staff kept the water coming. We all left the restaurant stuffed but happy. Would definitely recommend this place to fellow Yelpers. Sadly they do not accept American Express. That was a bummer.

My other half and I had an early dinner here this evening and were pleased with the food! I've had great Indian food before, but this was a bit more costly. It wasn't busy and our server was a bit quiet. We had to flag him down a few times for a "to-go" plate for our left overs. I ordered the shrimp curry and my other half got the chicken curry. It was our first time there so perhaps we ordered wrong, but our curries didn't come with anything. We had to order a side of rice and sides of roti. The chai can be served hot or cold, I ordered cold, and comes unsweetened. There were many pieces of shrimp and the chicken was moist. We ordered both curries to be mild which were still pretty spicy, but very delicious! Happy to have a good Indian food spot in Hilo. :)

Great Indian food. The Nan is fantastic.. I've had chicken masala, chicken korma and lamb vindaloo... All fantastic.. I highly recommend this place.

Hare Krisha! I am so happy & excited to finally have a great Indian curry house in Hilo. The food is excellent, so fresh & good you can smell it from the parking lot. The saag paneer (spinach w cheese) and vegetable samosas were the best I've ever tasted, and the grilled lamb kabob was superb. The place boasts a real tandoori oven so the naan bread & meats were cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed the eggplant curry and vegetable biryani rice were ono-licious and extremely well prepared. These people know how to cook! I can't wait to try everything on the extensive menu. If you're looking for authentic & delicious curry done right, skip every other place and town & go straight to Kamana Kitchen. I've only been there once, and would give this place 5-stars except the service was lacking. I stopped in to check it out & ordered take-out to bring home a feast, it smelled so good that I ordered a lot of food to go. There was only one person on wait-staff and while she was welcoming and helpful in answering questions, you could see she was struggling to keep up with serving the diners in the table areas. There was a young girl at the bar taking the to-go and phone orders who was decidedly lacking in knowledge about the food. She kept pestering the busy woman serving the tables with the simplest questions on various menu items. Methinks this is a family run place, and this young lady must've been someone's daughter who would rather not be working in the restaurant business. Once my order was taken, I sat at the bar and waited - there was no bartender and the girl taking the phone orders didn't ask me if I wanted anything to drink or even offer me a glass of water. Kamana Kitchen opened recently so probably needs to get staffed up properly and train its personnel better. They did not yet have a take out menu available, and apparently there were some errors on the printed menu, so they'll need to get that sorted out too. In spite of the staffing problem, I highly recommend this place and think Kamana Kitchen will be very popular since it's already serving up some of the best food in town.

First time eating Indian food! Impressed. One waitress is not very friendly, but was compensated by other staff (otherwise would have been 5 stars). Tikka masala was delicious and chicken was tender! We'll definitely be back for more!
(4)Bluten B.
The food taste authentic Indian. Not a lot of choices here in Hilo. So if you're looking for Indian food, this is the best in Hilo.
(5)Lei H.
omg the Lunch Special! good price, great service, awesome food... must try, I loooove it here! Friendly, Clean & Fast, too! *I love spicy food, and I'm sweating with Medium. Spicy but with great flavor.
(5)Renee L.
I love Indian food and often seek out restaurants in the many places I travel because I could not find a restaurant in Hilo with regular hours that served meat dishes. I need search elsewhere no longer. Though we only ate the lunch special, the flavors, portions and service was excellent. This will be one of my favs for the rest of the year.
(5)Mako S.
Their curry was so authentic !! That was Something I've been looking for ! Very flavorful, some spicy and never greasy. If you really love authentic then We highly recommend this restaurant ;) We tried "non vegetarian curry plate "to share for two . It comes with four different type of curry with plenty of rice . Every curry was SO tasty and enough portion for two . I feel really sad they are not in Oafu and too bad I cannot find a great authentic Indian curry retardant in Oahu.....:(
(5)Archana S.
Authentic food! Great in taste and awesome service. We came to visit Hawaii and craved for good indian food. Glad we went here. Dal makhani is must try.
(5)Jason K.
Excellent food. Arrived Friday night at 7 and left at 8:30. If service was more attentive, would be 5/5. Will return for more yummy Indian food. Royal non veggie plate 4/5 + their version of a mix plate + enough to feed 2 + each item was distinctly flavored + excellent choice for a first timer + lots of rice and 4 pieces naan included - missing samosa and pakora. After asking (saw the menu again) during dessert, waitress mentioned that they ran out. Would have been nice to have been informed during ordering. Definitely would be 5/5 if items weren't missing. Malai Kofta 5/5 + very flavorful, rich sauce + croquette textured well - naan not included Mango laasi 5/5 + best in Hilo + come here just for this Gulab jamun 3.5/5 Fried cheese balls in sweet syrup sauce + really different, fun to try
(4)Karlee K.
my friend and I are craving some tandoori chicken and this place did not disappoint. super flavorful, good service. I recommend the tandoori chicken or the chicken maharani. garlic naan is also the best. it can get kinda stuffy since its not air conditioned and the food is spicy so make sure to ask for a pitcher of water which they will happily supply.

Incredible food, incredible service, unfortunate location tucked away in a corner of a strip mall, but I'd love for this place to succeed by way of word of mouth, because it is so terrific, in an ideal world, it could. Unfortunately, this is Hilo, but high quality world cuisine outside of the Asia-Pacific Rim is so desperately needed here, for all, but especially us adventurous foodies. It felt like an *experience*, which is what a great dining excursion is all about. The food is delicious, authentic and the portions are very generous. We had the Non-Vegetarian Platter, which is a wonderfully cohesive sampler tray, definitely gives a you the best of everything. And I, a pretty big Indian food afficionado, was introduced to three new offerings via this platter, which I really appreciated. My only criticisms would be the pricing- a little steep, but the sheer quality of the food and the portion size softened the blow to the wallet a bit. I also really wanted some good paneer cheese, and was surprised it wasn't included in the platter, perhaps it was in the vegetarian, cannot recall. The restaurant itself it huge and has nice, very quiet ambience. The intermittent playlist of Bollywood dance music on the big flat screen tv added a nice touch. Waitress was attentive, quick, and wonderfully welcoming and kind. I highly recommend this place and pray they will flourish beyond measure and remain in Hilo. All the best.

Tasty, Yummy, Quality of food is Amazing!! One of my fab five Resturant here in Hilo.
(5)Lindsay L.
4.5 stars.. Awesome Indian food for Hilo standards. It's great quality food and a nice option when we are so limited in options.. Delicious flavors and great dishes. Everything on the menu is amazing. Go for the lunch plate special for the best deal. Venue is meh but hey it's Hilo :)
(4)RL A.
WOW! This is a wonderful addition to the Hilo dining scene. Yesterday was my first visit. I had the chicken Vindaloo for lunch and it was heavenly. The rice is just the right texture for this. Service was very friendly and efficient, and the owners are the nicest people you could hope to meet. I plan to spend the rest of the year eating my way through their menu.

On this Friday night me and a few friends decided on Indian. To my surprise my boyfriend was willing to try it too, It was our first time ever eating Indian food. I'm a bit of a food adventurer so knowing that there was a new eatery, let alone Indian food, I couldn't wait to try it! Thank goodness I did! The food was literally full of flavor. If I were to describe the flavors it would be a party in my mouth. Then the unexpected happened a friend of mines who ordered mango chutney suggested I add some to my chicken korma & it was like a raging party in mouth! I know it sounds pretty exaggerated but, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at kamana kitchen. I can't wait to return to try their other items. P.S. I had what looked and tasted like homemade pistachio ice cream for dessert. That too was awesome! & portions may look like their a bit smaller than what we are used to seeing, but they actually are filling.

Easily the tastiest, most flavorful Indian food I've had the pleasure of enjoying -- rivaling any of the multiple Indian restaurants I've tried in NYC. I ordered the non-vegetarian Royal Plate medium spicy & be aware, it is quite a feast! Just a few of the items in the Royal Plate include pakora & samosa for appetizers (with an amazing green cilantro mint chutney!), lamb curry (which I substituted for chicken curry), dal fry, naan, moist, aromatic basmati rice & of course, the chicken tikka masala. A knockout -- it's worth a visit here just for that. Creamy sauce + tender chicken, I'm addicted. Did I mention it was a feast? Will definitely enjoy the leftovers I took home for lunch tomorrow.
(5)Yuzen Y.
Great, legit, Indian food! Its a little expensive, but well worth it! Service was fast, friendly, and they came back many times to check if we were okay! Will be going back there again!
(5)Allaloha O.
UNEXPECTEDLY AWESOME!!! Aromas & tastes are clearly authentic. Tandoori chicken was moist & perfectly flavored. Lunch special was a good assortment - but too much food. Come hungry. Leave satisfied!
(5)Lindy H.
For a change, we tried the Kitchen for lunch today, and it was amazing. Lunch specials (I had the chicken Tika Masala) are served with all of the sides that you could want. Everything was delicious as always and we left with two boxes of leftovers. Can't wait to go back!
(5)DaKine J.
Good Indian food saag paneer and naan was my meal. The flavor was excellent and service was pleasant. The ambiance was not much to speak of just basic seating. No would eat there again for certain.

I really enjoy Indian food and was thrilled when Kamana Kitchen opened in Hilo! My mom and I came here for a bite to eat on Saturday around 1pm or so. It wasn't too packed, the service was friendly. We were seated quickly and given some menus, our server asked if it was our first time here because she's been seeing repeat customers (great sign!). We ordered the nonvegetarian royal plate to share along with a kachumber salad. The salad was fresh and a great off set to the hearty dishes we were sharing. The one suggestion I'd like to make is to get better cushioning or different seating where the booths are with the black upholstery. They were a little uncomfortable for us, but this may already be in the works. The food experience was wonderful and I can't wait to eat their food again. I hope Kamana Kitchen stays for a long, long time.
(4)J K.
Saag paneer and aloo gobi are officially now my favorite things to eat here, but everything is sooo delicious. I love this place. The staff are really nice too....
(5)Buddha B.
Seriously some amazing Indian. The Kona Kamana restaurant is definitely better than the Hilo one. I'm from the Bay Area in California and this place seriously throws down some amazing food, dare I say better than the indian restaurants in the Bay Area. We will definitely be back when visiting the Big Island!
(5)Tammy M.
Grand opening tonight. Still couple of links to work out, but nothing bad and what grand opening doesn't really. Great service, great food, what more can you ask for! This is their second location on the island with Kona being the first. We had Malai Kofta, Aloo Gobi, garlic naan, and onion kulchi. All were freshly prepared and delicious! Great way to end or amazing trip to Hilo!

We were excited to eat at a new restaurant in town, even more excited since it was Indian. The place was clean, the food smelled good. The prices were a little steep, which at first was okay. We got our food about 5 minutes after ordering. The rice was hard and getting cold. I ordered what I think was called the malai kofta... With the veggie croquettes. And my boyfriend ordered the mushroom dish. They served us about a cup. A few bites into the food and we started feeling sick. And it only got worse. We didn't finish our food, and it wasn't good enough to take home. It wasn't busy, and our waitress came to us twice, to see if we wanted anything else, and to bring us our check. She saw we had extra food and didn't offer a take out box. When we got the check we noticed the prices they charged were higher than the prices listed in the menu. My meal was 13.95, and they charged it $16, for a cup of sauce and four thumb sized logs. We were feeling too ill to complain to them so we left a note. We felt icky all night. We're never going there again. We also recently got word that a few people we know who ate there also got sick. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If you want good affordable Indian food, go to Prahbas.

Very nice people and GREAT food! We had an early dinner here while on vacation and had no idea just how delicious this was going to be. Highly recommend it. It is in a not so pretty strip mall but don't let that turn you off.

This place is exactly what my friend and I wanted. We were craving some authentic Indian food and figured we couldn't find it here in Hilo, but we were SO wrong. After a yelp search brought up this place we headed straight there and were not disappointed. We were welcomed instantly by the hostess and seated at a good table. The menu had lots of choices on it with many pictures and full descriptions of each item. We thought the prices were reasonable and ordered the Chicken Makhani, Garlic Naan, Vegetable Samosas, and Basmati Rice. The samosas came out within 5 minutes and the rest came out just as we were finished with the appetizer. ALL TASTED GREAT. We got the chicken with the heat at Medium and it was perfect for us. Everything was well seasoned with full flavor. Portion size was perfect. The two of us shared everything and left quite satisfied with just a little box of leftover chicken and rice. We also ordered pistachio ice cream which was the perfect ending. Service was wonderful and the waitress made sure we had everything we needed. Our waters were constantly refilled, which is very important to me. They were able to answer our questions about the food and even let us taste the Mango Lassi because we were kind of on the fence with it. It tasted great. The entire bill (with the one entree, appetizer, rice, naan, dessert, and one drink) only came out to about $29. Much less than we expected for the amount of food we ordered. I will definitely be returning some time soon and would recommend this to anyone who's looking for authentic Indian or just food with a lot of great flavor. Hilo needs more places like this.
(5)Phyllis R.
Although we are not widely experienced in Indian cuisine, this was a delightful surprise for Hilo! The sauce for the vegetarian croquets was memorably delicious. Can't wait to go back to try more dishes.
(4)Nishaki O.
This place is wonderful - great vegetarian options! The location is by the beach, and really great service. Fully recommend - walking distance from the pier.
(5)Sheryl R.
We are so pleased Kamana Kitchen has come to Hilo. We had dinner there Saturday night. They do not take reservations but at 7PM, while there were a number of diners there, we were able to be seated right away. The restaurant is large by Hilo standards but the tables are not crowded. The servers were very nice and helpful and our food came out with only a short wait between when we ordered and when it arrived. We ordered way more than we needed so we could take leftovers home and try a lot of things. They didn't mind and gave us carryout containers when we finished. We had Aloo Gobi Masala (cauliflower and potatoes), Shrimp Goan Curry, Chicken Madras, Raita, Naan, and Bengan Barta. The only thing we weren't goo excited about was the Bengan Barta (Eggplant Curry) as it seemed to be missing something. But the Shrimp was fresh and tasty, the aloo gobi was different than we were used to with more of a tomato base and it was very good, the chicken was tender, and the other items were delicious too. We will definitely return.

Really fine Indian food. Noise and very bright lights . . .How about shutting off those fan lights and adding some quiet Indian music? Another star for sure!

Comfortably cool and fairly quiet: these are 2 big pluses in my book for midday eateries. It may be augur to the disappointment about to arrive from the kitchen, Excepting the homemade Naam. I felt as if the regular (nonvegan menu items) perhaps contained 40 cents of ingredients hidden within what best be termed "gravy". Served in segmented cafeteria style ware, the most complete and highest recommended lunch special only included uneventful rice, 2 pieces of Naam (we asked for extra) and 3 all too similar flavors of Sauce/gravy adorned with Indian Titles - the chicken Tikka Masala had chicken in there, somewhere?? really? I found a couple of sugar cube sized over cooked potatoes, and maybe a slice of sweet potato about the size of a quarter. Same for the Curry, I kept looking for anything "hiding" in the gravy! No such luck. the Non vegetarian plate lists 9 items, but we're using different math.I'd asked about the "salad" listed as one of the nine inclusions, being told most honestly, "its very very small salad" In fact it was the smallest I've seen anywhere, at anytime in my life (perhaps the amount we could instruct our grand daughter to attempt as a first solid foodstuff for a newborn baby coqui frog. I'd love nothing more than a great Indian eatery in downtown Hilo and Kailua-kona. I'll be fair and say the Kona location might be different. For now, I'd like to recommend only stopping in for cool breather and perhaps an iced tea. I wont be trying another menu item- not until I see other improvements.

Loved it! Garlic naan and the tikka masala were both amazing!

Very friendly staff! A grade food in reasonable price! I was so happy to find such a good Indian restaurant in Hilo!
