Based on my check ins.....I loooooooove indulging in decadent food, but on a daily basis I will make healthy choices. Island Naturals is my go to spot when I am in Hilo. They have the hot food area similar to Wholefoods or Down to Earth. The breakfast burrito filled with eggs and veggies is delicious and I recommend the spinach and eggs, tandoori chicken, warabe salad and sausage veggie mix. I have been coming here for years. Sadly this incident was so terrible that although I fly here every week, I am afraid to go there again. Island Naturals has a wrap or sandwich made to order bar. A month ago, I ordered a salmon wrap. Remember.....this is made fresh when you order. It was tightly wrapped and covered when I got it. I opened it and my entire floor of the building WREAKED of a RANCID fish smell. 4 people came running into the room asking what the smell was. I cut the wrap open, obviously the salmon was bad from the smell, the tomato was translucent and wilted and the brown paste was actually the avocado. Normally organic food places like this take pride in FRESHNESS. I know....I frequent these places. Food always takes longer but it's made fresh. If it was the carelessness of that 1 employee- the young lady that makes the sandwiches in the morning, she should be taken off that duty...she takes no pride of the product she is giving out. I feel like it was pre-made from the day before and she was trying to get rid of it instead of making a new batch.

This review is mostly about the deli. They offer a wide range of lunch items from fish sandwiches to organic soba to soup to veggie wraps. All reasonable priced. I got the organic pizza from the hot plate station for $3.99 the slice and my parents ordered both a fish sandwich for $6.50 each. The sandwich was huge for that price. You definitely can't find a deal like in Honolulu :P I even tried the organic tapioca that was reduced to $3.49 from $3.99 :) better than paying 50 cents more. Hardly much sugar so good for those who are diabetic or on a diet restriction. The location is very convenient. It's about 5 mins away from my grandmother's house on kilauea ave. Located in the Hilo shopping center and plenty of parking stalls. There is some seating inside the store and many tables outside the store.

So the three stars is mainly focused on the deli counter portion of island naturals. Their vegan selection of products is the best on the island and I appreciate that. I will also be more than happy to update my review if my next couple visits to their deli counter turn out better. I ordered the veggie patty sandwich with avocado, mayo-mustard spread, pickles, onions, bell peppers and artichoke hearts. That is what I paid for. Instead my sandwich came with no pickles, no avocado, only the mayo spread, and olives for some reason? I live in orchidland and didn't open the sandwich up until I got home, so I wasn't going to go all the back to Hilo to fix it. I've worked in the restaurant industry for 6+ years and I am aware that mistakes happen. But there were no other orders when I placed mine and you circle exactly what you want on a piece of paper, so I'm a little less understanding. But overall, I will come back to island naturals and get my vegan noms there.

This place has a lot of good stuff. Being that it is a health food store, the food is great and the amount of supplements they have are awesome! It's always busy, which is a good thing. Go organic!
(4)Peg C.
Cute natural foods shop with an extensive hot and cold prepared foods deli. When the Hubs and I are on vacation, we like to cook and eat out too. This place and the KTA (awesome grocery store!) became our go-to places for getting meats, fruit and veg. Like getting grass-fed Big Island Beef here.
(4)Rose P.
A good locally owned place in Hilo to grab snacks, or food from the deli/hot bar. They have a very good selection and offer something for everyone. Their prices are higher than the other health food store in town, Abundant Life, but for food on the go, Island Naturals is my favorite spot to stop when I'm in a rush, or in the mood for delicious, healthy prepared food. The staff in the health/beauty department are really knowledgable and helpful. Generally all of the staff members are knowledgeable about their products, and can point you in the right direction.
(4)Cindy W.
Great hot foods selection of vegan/vegetarian and meat (!!!) options! I was impressed, but it is a bit pricey... Nonetheless, it was very flavorful and I enjoyed everything especially the chicken satay. I also had the passionfruit mousse but was less impressed. It was essentially whipped cream cheese. Ugh too heavy. Nonetheless, go for the hot bar! It's constantly rotating as well so depending on what time you go, you'll get something different depending on availability.

Paradise. Hawaii's version of Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, it has a lot of the same products, including the bulk section which had the exact same items as Whole Foods in Chicago or New York for surprisingly slightly less per pound! The take-out food is the real bonus though. They have an actual Japansese chef making sushi and other dishes, and the prices are totally reasonable (considering where you are). Note: The Island Naturals in Kona is not nearly as good :(

I usually only have 30 minutes for lunch, so I love that island naturals always has ready-made sandwiches and other foods items that I can grab and go. They have a pretty considerable variety of food types so there's almost always something that'll satisfy whatever it is I happen to be craving on any given day. The hot bar items seem to change all the time, and I'm never disappointed. They even have sushi rolls! My favorite is the chicken roll (see pic). I do have two criticisms though. The first is the smoothies. I have yet to find a one that I like. I prefer sweet cane cafe right down the street, or even jamba juice. The second criticism is their fruit/vegetable juices; they always seem watered down. I make my own juices at home using a centrifugal juicer, and mines always come out tasting more substantial in terms of flavor and nutrition. However, juicing is a cumbersome process and the cleanup afterwards is a pain, so when I'm feeling lazy I settle for a juice from island naturals. Overall though I do like going to island naturals for their food items. It's fast, convenient and best of all, healthy.

I love this place. The cold and hot food bars are amazing; so is everything else homemade! The prices are also pretty good here for all the health food/organic products. If you're in Hilo, I highly recommend stopping in, I promise you won't be able to leave empty handed. Try the Purple Island Salad and the Ahi Rice Burger ;)

Best health food store on the island. Always having great sales and I love their rewards program. Fresh produce lots of gluten-free items. I'm in love with this place
(5)Leahi W.
This is where I spend ALL of my hard earned cash! Why is the Rose chocolate bar $6.99 in Pahoa and $10.99 in Hilo? Thats not cool. There are some good discounts sometimes and I like the point system. I think their employees deserve more than a 20% discount.
(3)oNEloVE C.
My favorite grocery store on the Island so many healthy eats and treats I'm like a kid in a candy store here but its even better!!! I love their hot bar and ube tapioca!!! I was inspired by there ahi rice burgers and boy did I make my own version today that came out even better!! I will certainly miss hitting this place up seriously I would say it was one of the highlights of my trip every time never failed to get something amazing out of there!!
(5)Morgan K.
This place has everything! It's one of my favorite places in Hilo. Perfect place to pick up lunch whether it's from the salad bar, hot bar, sushi/sandwich/smoothie counter, or the extensive display of wraps, salads, and desserts.
(5)Kaleb A.
Awesome store with super friendly staff, especially Ginger the cashier. They are always welcoming me with a smile and friendly rapport. I order a smoothy every time I am in Hilo town. I also enjoy the buffet here. The Jamaican Jerk Chicken is tasty and spicy.
(5)Colleen H.
We were starving, right after landing in Hilo, and searched "natural food". Island Natural food and deli came up and was convenient. But it was so much more! The highlight was the ginger kombucha on tap. We make our own at home but this was excellent! The hot food bar and the salad bar both offered a variety of tasty alternatives. All our usual stuff was easy to find and priced as one would expect on an island, but not excessive; many things cost the same in California. If you are looking for a full offering of natural/organic foods, look no further!
(5)Jacquelyn M.
Amazing place to go to when in need of healthful, wholesome, and diet friendly (vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, etc). Absolute favorites are the green papaya salad, tofu veggie wrap, vegan banana bread, sweet potato crisp and their apple bars as granola in the bulk aisle!
(5)Summer S.
The quality of the food in the deli is not worth the huge price. Many of the items are poorly seasoned. I bought a bowl of "Korean Chicken" , which consisted of some low quality chicken, unseasoned disgusting rice, and a small spoonful of Orzo which tasted bitter and gross. It totaled about 12oz and cost me 5.99. Overall most of the things I have tried have been this same way, hugely overpriced. Also I consistently find that there are things there that are overpriced for no reason. An example of this is the beef they carry. I buy my beef from the same place they do, and it is literally half the price. They do not even repackage it, they just buy it and put a new price tag on it, put it in the store.
(1)George B.
Best natural food store on the island! Prices are very reasonable as well. Good selection of goodies!
(5)Jack W.
Great vegetarian and vegan deli options! The store also has a great selection. Good place to stock up in Kona. Good prices and great food!
(5)Jennifer H.
Happy to find this place. They had many readymade sandwiches and sides that are great to take for a hike or picnic. Found the vegan staples I use at home. Prices were similar to the mainland. Friendly staff!
(5)Emi H.
After reading all the stellar reviews of Island Naturals Market & Deli, suggesting it for our family's next lunch stop was easy! During our Big Island vacation we'd eaten nothing but fried foods and plate lunch, so I thought a healthy meal was in order. The store itself is not expansive as a big box grocery store, but it's very well organized and clean. We headed straight to the prepared foods area in the back and found a deli, hot food bar and lots of packaged picnic options. My boyfriend went for the hot foods and I opted for some cold options as it was an extremely hot afternoon. I grabbed a delicious purple potato salad and a refreshing coconut tapioca. I found them both to be tasty and I did not regret opting for veggies instead of french fries. My body was craving growing foods and it was grateful! The one big negative of going to Island Naturals is that it's pricey, but if you come in prepared to pay more for healthy and organic fare, you'll be all good! Eating fresh and local is always going to be more expensive than drive-thru, but having more energy and feeling good are completely worth it! Look at it as an investment in longevity and treat yourself! 31 Yelps Challenge: #21/31

Stopped for lunch with my husband and twenty-something sons while on vacation. We all found our own delicious options - sandwiches, wraps, salads, hot foods bar. Would definitely recommend stopping! Nice option rather than spending time in a restaurant. Outdoor tables also.

****Island Natural's MOP (Meal in One Pic)**** yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… **************************************************Â** If you like Whole Foods and can bare the prices you are going to love the Island Naturals Market & Deli! It has delicious baked goods, self serve buffet items, and most of it is vegan , vegetarian. The prepared food items are delicious. The triple chocolate mousse found in the fridge is to die for. It is the best place to create a gourmet pic-nic. The fruit selection is good as well. The self served bar is the freshest around 10.30am when they stock it for the first time but they keep bringing more through-out the day. We tried: Vegan Walnut Orange Scone yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… A great and delicious scone. The texture was perfect and the flavor balance was right on. Not too sweet, not to much orange. The whole walnut added some crunch to a soft scone. We bought them several times. Veggie Lasagna yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… Nice lasagna with fresh tomatoes and carrots. The tomato chunks were juicy and tasted great. IT used local vegetables! Fried Rice yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… Light and fluffy fried rice with peas and carrots. Salad Bar yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… Large selection of local vegetable salad. I enjoyed the quinoa salad. The fridge section also has great salad. Tofu yelp.com/biz_photos/fg-V… Nice curry sauce on a good piece of tofu If you are missing Whole Foods while on vacation in Hawaii the Island Natural will fill the void!
(4)Reed N.
It is like Whole Foods on the mainland... only more expensive! LOL That being said, it is cheaper than eating out. Some things are actually affordable. I thought the wine was reasonably priced, and bought a bottle of unoaked chardonnay, Steelbird by Smoking Loon. I also found some reasonable cuts of Ahi to cook at the timeshare.
(3)Kristin M.
I love their vegetarian lasagna and a side salad. Price is OK per pound. I got a good deal on my water jug from customer appreciation day. Parking at the shopping center can be packed on certain days but when I can get to a few businesses while there it makes it worth while. I would continue going back.
(4)Lei S.
Love the food! Always delicious!

Mostly I'm a fan. The employees are friendly and helpful. the store is clean, seems well maintained and for the most part the goods are high quality, nicely displayed and for Hawaii pretty reasonable. I especially like the attitude of the owner in personally responding to many Yelp reviews. My only hiccup was I don't believe all the products are tested before being placed on the shelf leaving customers to be the guinea pigs. If I'm wrong I apologize but when I brought them back and asked the manager on duty if someone from the store had tested the Food for Life gluten free brown rice tortillas before offering them for sale I got a very hesitant yes. I'm not looking for a refund, but the tortillas tasted and had the consistency of plaster of paris. To top it off they immediately fell apart on putting ingredients inside after the suggested heating, leaving them pretty much worthless. With the price of food, this being top end food, I think more discrimination is in order. I'm sure there are hundreds if not a thousand items in the store, which absolves no responsibility to the customer and I do believe management wants to take the high road.

Island naturals have to be one of the top places I miss about living in Hilo. I'd always come here on my lunch break. The apple pie is a MUST TRY! I crave that stuff all the time. Tahitian limeade as well!
(5)Ben M.
Really great market with tons of awesome, healthy and tasty food. We stopped here to grab lunch stuff for the drive back to kona and were delighted by the sushi, salads, wraps, etc. We are now thoroughly provisioned for our drive, snacking on our wonderful spoils only moments from leaving the store. Would return/recommend in a heartbeat!
(5)Brenda M.
They have everything both healthy meats and vegan items. It's like a mini whole foods. Expensive but that's to be expected. Good lunch Buffet!
(4)Jo Ann A.
First time ordering lunch from the sandwich counter at back of the store. After waiting nearly 10 minutes for my tuna salad sandwich, I asked about it as I noticed others who ordered after me were getting their items. The lady asked me what I ordered & told me it was coming up. After another few minutes of waiting, the same lady then tells me they were out of tuna! So I waited for nothing! And since this is also a market as well, how could the place have no tuna? Inventory is off! Don't plan to patronize the sandwich counter any time soon.
(1)Jade T.
This place has it all! If you want a fresh and healthy meal, look no further. They have an Awesome Salad Bar & I love their Carrot Cake & Smoothies too!
(5)Matt M.
They have lots of gluten free foods. No gluten free bread options at deli. No peanut butter panda puffs. But they have great gluten free raw pies and also gluten free pumpkin bread. Bought salad, bread, pie, ginger ale, and then went out to watch the outrigger races. Its expensive but good, especially the deserts.
(4)Cynthia B.
I would most likely have given 4.5 stars. But, rounded up... I have had breakfast, lunch and gone shopping here. the breakfast bar is legit. I had some kind of egg empanada. It was buttery, flakey and hit the spot. The grocery shopping is pretty good if you need some natural odds and ends. Obviously, pricey...but that's what you get for organic. As for lunch, I had a teriyaki salmon sandwich. I was pretty stoked on this as well. Big bonus half star for Island Naturals: When all the locals close their shops for Holiday, Island Naturals is still open to grab a sand-o.
(5)Jewelyn T.
My favorite little gem in Hilo! I always find myself here... while living on the island and now a visitor. I'm a huge fan of their deli sandwich! They make it fresh... your way! I usually get the honey roasted turkey, with Dijon mayo mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions, sprouts, avocado, provolone cheese on foccacia bread! (^_^) yummy! I also like their spinach artichoke dip and eat it with the soy bean corn chips they sell in the isle! My mom and grandma is a fan of their hot table... which they serve all sorts of tasty foods from salads to main dishes. I love their peanut butter chocolate vegan bar! OMG! heaven. With all of this... I wash it down with a Hansen soda! My mom gets organic doggie treats for her yorkies here too. Ask for a punch card! All natural products/organic... + beauty products + fresh fruits and veggies + fish + food products deli and hot table + doggie products. This is your one stop shop for all your "All natural" needs. Come here for lunch! Private parking lot that is shared with other businesses. Outdoor seating. I'm a forever a fan! I wish there was a Island Naturals in L.A!
(5)Sonny K.
Ive held off reviewing this market for sometime now for several reasons. One being ive been tittering on the edge of 2 and 3 stars for awhile and could not make up my mind. Secondly I spent a long while being angry with the place primarily because they knowingly brought Kope Kope to its dying days. I'm finally over it and this is a way to bring closure for me lol. And lastly I no longer am dating a die hard Island Naturals fan that would have put me in the dog house for writing this review. The Products. A fair selection, the best if you are just comparing it to only natural food stores. They have a deli which is mediocre in my opinion and a buffet which is very good. If you are into cooking especially organic cooking or cooking with rare spices this is a good place. The wines are not worth it. Even when they are on sale they are more than i would pay for a imilar wine. The veggies, expensive but hey you want organic you pay. Their supplement and skin care section seems a little 3rd world to me and i would rather go to GNC or Vitamin world due to my need for legitimacy. They have an abundance of soy and dairy free products. This is primarily why i go there as i suffer from lactose intolerance. The service. Very good everybody there is really cool and helpful except for one guy who knows me as the Kope singer and always gloats that his store shuts our store down. Not cool man, just not cool. The prices, Somewhat Understandably expensive - Kind of Over priced. Using the term "over priced" should not be taken lightly. Over price is when something is or should be cheaper elsewhere. Like gas. Expensive means costly but justifyably so. Id say Island Naturals falls in the gray area between the two. Organic products will be expensive but on the other hand paying 15 dollars for a small portion of food at a buffet line is over priced. $7 for a refridgerated day old sushi bento, Overpriced. $5 for a lactose free icecream expensive. Organic wines (if it is even possible for wine to be inorganic) expensive. It all depends on what you buy and how much you are willing to Pay for the tags: "Island" or "Natural".
(2)L. T.
Helpful, happy workers! They are more than willing to help and don't give you the "You're interrupting me!" smirk or tone when asked for help! Food bar is excellent, but super expensive! :( Produce is minimal, but organic lettuce is cheaper than most other supermarkets around town! I ony buy my organic lettuce from here...or well, I try to anyway. Good selection of dried foods (beans, trail mix, etc.). I'm probably here once a week. I really do enjoy this store! :)
(5)Eric Robert R.
Thank you for the followup, Russell. Not much owners respond to comments, so it shows how much you care. Bonus karma star! I always shoot from the hip and i'm honest with my reviews. Btw- had the pumpkin chocolate chip slice the other day- still warm- O N O!

Raw vegan pineapple coconut cake. Amazing. (Just wished that each mouthful wasn't going to cost me fifty cents. If only these prices weren't as bad as Toronto's.)

Best natural food store on the island! Prices are very reasonable as well. Good selection of goodies!
(5)Jack W.
Great vegetarian and vegan deli options! The store also has a great selection. Good place to stock up in Kona. Good prices and great food!

Happy to find this place. They had many readymade sandwiches and sides that are great to take for a hike or picnic. Found the vegan staples I use at home. Prices were similar to the mainland. Friendly staff!
(5)Reed N.

I love their vegetarian lasagna and a side salad. Price is OK per pound. I got a good deal on my water jug from customer appreciation day. Parking at the shopping center can be packed on certain days but when I can get to a few businesses while there it makes it worth while. I would continue going back.

Thank you for the followup, Russell. Not much owners respond to comments, so it shows how much you care. Bonus karma star! I always shoot from the hip and i'm honest with my reviews. Btw- had the pumpkin chocolate chip slice the other day- still warm- O N O!
