Went there twice on our visit to Hilo - loved it so much we had to go back. Both times we had excellent food! The ahi special was amazing - perfectly seasoned and cooked. It beat some of the meals we've had at restaurants that we paid twice as much. The same goes for the tomato bisque! It blew me away - it's the best I've ever had. The crab cakes were excellent as well as the Teri chicken. The quality, portions as well as the presentation of the food earned a solid 4 stars.

In my previous life in Chicagoland, there were many popular restaurants that were informally called "breakfast houses". My breakfast at the Coconut Grill yesterday would put it in the top ranks of breakfast houses. When my omelette was served I really thought it was made to be split between two diners. Same goes for the moist and tasty banana bread. I had stayed overnight at the Hilo Seaside Hotel, for which this is the dining room. Just like the hotel, this place delivers what you expect -- and more. Very reasonable prices. Friendly staff.

Went here on a Sunday morning for brunch, and the wait staff was super nice! I am giving this place 3 stars because we waited a very long time for our food... We had a party of 4, with rather simple dishes yet we ended up waiting over 30 minutes to receive our food. Keep in mind there were probably only 4 other families in the restaurant at the time. I had bacon, eggs, and toast, with a side of french toast. My toast was rather burnt as you'll see in the picture I'm posting and the french toast was average. I would come back if I were ever invited, but I might stick with Cafe 100 or Kens House of Pancakes for brunch instead.

The food was pretty good - the "included" breakfast choices are pretty limited and certainly are smaller portions than the other breakfasts. Our server was super busy so she had a hard time keeping up but didn't charge us full price to make up for it. Over all we enjoyed our breakfast.

Best breakfast in Hilo area, reasonable price, good food. Service is a little slow, but its the island, where is service fast?
(4)Lisa H.
From 2011 Check was dropped about 5 minutes into our meal. Fried rice is pretty good but all in all, nothing special.

EXCELLENT! SUPERLATIVE! We had Prime Rib for my birthday today and it was excellent . Deliciously and delicately prepared and well seasoned . Good selections from the salad bar. The service was superlative. Kahea our waitress was excellent. She's full of aloha and genuine care for her customers. Our great surprise was Kahea came out with delicious brownie and ice-cream with lighted candle. I was sooooo touched and was almost in tears. This lady is full of real Aloha so genuine even the palm trees were like dancing hula! My mate and I are world travelers and we can easily spot real warmth and kindness of servers. Kahea got it! We now live outside HILO and we will always come back to this wonderful place. Unpretentious, simple but warm ambience. I call it, a place FULL OF REAL ALOHA!

This is a solid dinner restaurant near the Hilo Airport. Good food, decent pricing, and a casual atmosphere. Outside seating would have been nice, but overall a good place to stop and eat.
(3)Jeff M.
Great food with a very local atmosphere. Had the BBQ short ribs and coconut shrimp was very tasty. Looking for a cheap eat a little off the beaten path this is your place.

I've never been dissatisfied with my food during the few times that I have come. I've only come for dinner. Tonight I had the Furikake Seared Ahi and it was really good. The ahi was seared perfectly and the sauce was delicious. The stir fried veggies were cooked well with the sauce; I ate everything (even the carrots which I don't like)! There was this crunchy noodle things on top of the ahi that was too hard for me to eat. As for the service, they are pretty friendly for the most part. One waitress is a little snobby but she wasn't our server, luckily.

More like 4.5. Good service. Good food. Many of the typical Hawaiian dishes had a lil twist so it's not so typical. Seafood sampler was delicious, breakfast I forgot name but it was pastrami hash with scallions and 3 eggs, yummy!
(4)Lisa S.
I went here in October with my mom and some friends we were staying with. The food was delicious, I had the short ribs and my mom had the coconut shrimp. The service was nothing to brag about but they did an okay job. We had a good time and would go back.

Local, family run spot, inexpensive. Food was "ok", nothing to write home about but if you venture to that side of the Big Island, it's a decent place to stop into. With most places on the Big Island, I'd recommend the fresh fish sandwich or platter. Not one of my brightest moves but I ordered the crab cake sandwich (and live in the DC area where the crab cakes are the best of the best), it was definitely not freshly made. My husband enjoyed his meal and our friends, who both ordered the fish sandwiches, had no complaints. 2 bottles of wine, a handful of beers and 4 entrees cost us $112, not bad at all.
(3)John I.
decent price with good amount of food...will have to try their 20$ prime rib next..

As I stated in my tip appearances are deceptive; in a GREAT way!!!!! :D ok, ok, ok decor is off - old school, worn out: who cares! You are tired, hungry, maybe thirsty, and if you have the 'feed us or we will go crazy on you' poster board children tagging and squealing along, you really just don't care to look around so long as the food is comin' at ya full throttle! (And to prevent the lil munchkins from becoming the 'Godzillas' of Hilo!) (Let's be a little more realistic: the entire island!) So decor, yeah that completely passed me by! The chairs WERE cozy rattan ones! Best way I can describe this place gourmet yumminess with small town vibe! You walk in, wait to be seated - menus arrive (don't be alarmed if you see moldy pupu/dessert menus! Yes even paper succumbs to mold! ;) Darn tropical humidity... Our waitress was very friendly, and politely pointed out all the great items on the menu - and let me tell you I was impressed seeing it. I thought for a moment I was staring at the Culinary Institute's menu for a moment! Hamachi done up two ways, mini crab cakes for pupus! There were a few others, but I forgot about them after seeing hamachi. ;) Get the pupus ordered, and the drinks - next up to decide the main dish - what do I see? Crab cakes - why yes I think I will try those thank you very much! DONE deal! Kids - 1 Teri Chicken, and 1 BBQ ribs. Hubs - after referring to his phone - he had some sort of crispy furikake chicky! All I can say is - WOW! Portions all around GENEROUS!!! But so worth the price! No kidding keiki w/ the BBQ ribs just about had her eyes bulging out of her head when she saw her food! The other two squealed and screamed to the delight (?) of the waitress, and maybe some other kid loving guests. First words out of their mouths in a very frankensteinish way - "YUUUUUMMY"!!!! Yup - chuckles all around. Hubs, yeah good luck trying to talk with him when hunger strikes and food on plate! (straw was not visible in his mouth, but I swear it's there!) That crab cake - that morsel of sweet heavenly delight - *sigh* I want more of it. I really do! Buuut Island hopping just to go there to go get it is not in my cards right now. We were quite stuffed afterwards so, no dessert - but oh those crab cakes! Go for 'em. You will not be disappointed!

*This review is for the breakfast only* We were staying at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and had to meet up with some old friends for breakfast. Coconut Grill which is connected to the Seaside Hotel was only a few minutes away and street parking in front of the restaurant was plentiful. Our friends who frequent this restaurant already had a table and were munching on some banana bread which I sampled, I thought it was pretty moist and good. Our waitress came by with menu and brought us coffee and water in a timely manner , but after ordering that's where it got a little disappointing. I know that we all can make mistakes, but she should know how long it takes the cook to make the food ordered. Yes she put the order in,hit the wrong button and 25 minutes later still no food. Our friend had to ask her about our food and that is when she realized what had happened. I must say that they did apologize about the mishap and adjusted the bill accordingly. Anyway....I ordered the Kona Eggs Benedict. Kalua Smoked Turkey on Grilled Cornbread : yelp.com/biz_photos/coco… The eggs were poached perfectly, loved that you could taste the smoky flavor in the moist turkey pieces and the grilled cornbread was heavenly. *Minus *1star for the error. *Nice relaxing atmosphere with reasonable menu prices and a full bar. *I would come back and eat here again despite the mistake. *Friendly Service.

What a horrible experience!!! It's so sad that their food is pretty good, but their management and service is in desperate need of help!!! I have been here many times before. I've actually done small parties here because they are really the only ones with a private room. Food is decent and their service was always poor. Your best bet is to have their simple salad bar to avoid the long wait. Today's visit took the cake....the most horrible service I have received anywhere....and I eat out A LOT! By all means, this wasn't my first choice for breakfast, but my mother and step-father that came from out of town was staying at the Seaside Hotel that Coconut Grill is located at (convenient). We had a party of 13 adults and 4 children, which we called and made reservations to reserve a large table being they are usually busier on Sundays. We arrived at 8:30am....order "was put in" at 9:00am....didn't get our FIRST plate until ONE HOUR later (only because my mother complained and mentioned my father needed is food because he's diabetic and hadn't eaten yet). I was the last person on the table to receive my food (pancakes), which was ONE HOUR AND FORTY-FIVE MINUTES later. NOT ONCE did a "manager" come to our table to apologize for the wait or ask if he could do anything for us. Our server Hilary was very apologetic. I assured her it was not her fault because they (the kitchen) should be more prepared knowing they are usually busy on Sundays and management should do something about it. In the 1 hr. 45 min sitting there, other customers came in, ordered, ate, and left (which most had hotel vouchers). Our server mentioned that parties our size order ahead of time and come in to have their meals in a timely manner. So, my mother tried to work with the hotel and restaurant management to try and get some kind of compensation for the horrible service and long wait. It ended up that "all he could do for us" was remove the 18% service charge (TIP) from our bill. Little did the manager know that we gave the server over 20% tip. I decided to speak to the manager and he insisted there was nothing else he could do because he no longer had the "authorization" to give a 10% discount off of our bill because other parties in the past got offended by that 10% discount, which to me shows that there have been many complaints prior. I told the manager he shouldn't assume that everyone would get offended because for me that shows me that he was concerned about our service. He even had the nerve to tell me "if it's all about the money, I'll give you the 10% out of my pocket" and pulled money out of his wallet and tried to hand it to me. NOW THAT IS AN INSULT!!! I told him it's not about the MONEY, it's about showing us that our patronage means something to them and that they care that we as customers were waiting OVER an hour for our breakfast. I told him as a manager, it's sad that he could not make that decision and say I'm sorry, let me give you a 10% discount for your wait. He said even the owner told him there was nothing he could do. So, in the end with bad service and bad management, we paid FULL PRICE and our server got a VERY GENEROUS tip for luke warm food and unhappy customers. FYI: Server mentioned we weren't the only ones waiting for a long period. She had gotten "chewed out" several times this morning by other customers.

Never again. Starts out by seating us in a dark corner when no one is in resturant (this was about 9:30 am on a Tues). We go to order and they are out of white bread, only have wheat. Can we have a muffin instead? gotta charge extra. Okay change plan. Order eggs and pancakes. Ask for eggs over easy - they come scrambled. Husband's toast is not TOASTED - did not even seem like anything was done but thrown on plate,, and no butter with it. Had to ask for them to bring TOAST and butter. Server never came back to refill coffee. and did not bring water at all. Changed server (second server was very nice). "home fries" are more like potato chips. Over all horrible experience and will not be back again. And we live here. So we would go more than average visitor. Cost was $25 + tip and we could have, sad to say had a better breakfast at Mc Donald's for 1/4 the price. DO NOT go here!!!!!!

I go to coconut grill a lot but I don't know what the heck happened this time. First of all that place has like 3 entry ways so workers have to keep eyes out. It took awhile for me and my son to get seated, then when we sat down the waiter didn't offer us water, or even a drink menu. We sat there for alittle over 5 minutes when thank god waiter Scottie came by and helped us the rest of our time there. He asked if anyone offered us drinks or menu, i said no. From there, he took care of us. I'm starting to think if it wasn't for him no one would've helped us. I seen several workers around and none of them even cared to come to our table. So disappointed. Their customer service sucked but Scottie was excellent!

On a recent business trip to Hilo, I stayed in the hotel attached to this restaurant. I popped down for dinner my first night. I have to cut them some slack. This place was pumping. They had a retirement party plus a full house. I'm guessing they may have called in extra staff to handle the load. In I walk...party of one. The wait staff was very attentive given the number of people they were having to accommodate. The kitchen sent out some bread with a yummy spread to tide me over until my entrée arrived. There was a guy singing & playing guitar. I was sorry he left before I had a chance to give a tip. I ordered the pasta pesto with grilled shrimp. I don't know if it was because the kitchen was overloaded or what, but the dish didn't have the flavor I would expect and was a little over-oily. Wine and my entrée came to about $28 with tip. I came back for breakfast the next two mornings. Breakfast was fabulous. Very nice open air feeling with a lovely view of the bay. They've also marked the tsunami high-tide on their window. I've since been back and had the opportunity to try other menu items. The crab cakes and shrimp tikis are both winners. Their Caesar salad with fish also very good but can sometimes be a little on the salty side. AND, HELLO, I discovered they have crème brulee on the dessert menu. All I can say is, save room.
(4)Tiff H.
We actually came in for their brunch, but found out they only offer it on holiday sundays? Got their menu and was shocked because there was A LOT of good choices! They ran lut of fried rice and saif it would take too long to make more so he got fried potatos. I got the crab cake benadict, however you spell it, it was delicious but was disapointed that my yolk was HARD! 4 stars, deffs coming back but maybe not for the poached eggs
(4)Mark H.
Dinner was great. Awesome service from Shane our waiter. My wife and SIL had the ribs and were not disappointed. BIL had the fried Mahi Mahi dinner. I had the Chopped Steak meal which was very tasty and came with potato salad, grilled onions w/brown gravy and rice. 3 of us had the pineapple creme burlee which came with a bowl of their homemade ice cream on the side. BIL had their version of Lava Cake and was very happy with it as it came with 3 smaller scoops of ice cream. Establishment was very clean. The retro Hawaiian decor was a nice touch. Had screens on the windows which helped keep bugs out. Establishment across street had open windows and sat directly on the bay. Was curious if they had fly problem as we were bugged by them while strolling along the water. More of a Bay view than an ocean view from resturaunt though.

My number one breakfast stop! Love the Kamaaina Benedict's and the Crabcake Benedict's. By far the best I've had on this island yet. And their mimosas are good here too. Lunch and dinner is also very good, but I usually only come for breakfast at least 1-4 times a month.
(5)Dean I.
Another awesome visit to coconut grill! Came for B-day dinner this time. Pulehu ribs w/ guava BBQ sauce was delish. Also had the brownie for dessert, so moist... Our server, Katie was awesome, attentive and gave a great recommendation of the pulehu ribs! We'll be back for more!
(5)Sarah G.
Great place and good food for a family on a budget. The service was outstanding. I ordered the special (macadamia crusted ahi with a mango cream sauce). It was amazing. The chef came out to see how I liked it, it was sweet. I could tell he was very proud of his creation. My mother had the coconut shrimp. The presentation for it was fun, but the shrimp itself was not that great. I would eat there again.
(4)Julie H.
Good, tasty food! Came in here for a quick bite while running around Hilo. Nothing fancy, just friendly staff, tasty food, chill vibe. For lunch I had the Ahi Wrap and it was tasty! Good fries, too! Plus it came out pretty quick, but it took long enough and tasted good enough that you could tell it was made to order.

My boyfriend and I took a mini vacation to the Big Island and our friend referred us to this place. I'm so glad I listened! It was an awesome experience from the get go... SERVICE we walked in, didn't know it was happy hour... anyway, we were greeted and taken to a table right away because they weren't busy yet...Our waitress was awesome! Very attentive! FOOD We ordered the popcorn shrimp for appetizer which was good... breaded and cooked to golden..My boyfriend had the coconut shrimp because people raved about it on yelp... It was the most awesome presentation I've seen for coconut shrimp...The shrimp was individually skewered and then stuck into a piece of pineapple... I don't like coconut shrimp but he said it was good...I had the hamburger steak and it was AWESOME!!! I don't know if that was house gravy but it was damn good! The patties(2) was very tender... It was mixed with onions and mushrooms....urghhh so good!!! Overall, everything was super good and I'd go to this place again next visit!!!
(5)Banu J.
Their happy hour has yummy food, friendly service. Their breakfast and HH menu have been my favorite.

Was there in March of 2014; went to the Coconut Grill for breakfast on a Friday morning. We had stayed at the Hilo Seaside hotel and figured on trying the grill because it was right there, then we could get on with our day and head out. It's noting spectacular to look at - (which kind of appeals to me - I like finding hole in the wall restaurants) - and the staff was nice enough - but the food - oh lordie - dat fried rice man... it haunts my dreams. I remember walking in - smelling something AWESOME, saw a family at a table near the door where we walked in had ordered the fried rice and myself and the two other people in my group (my hubby and a friend) all agreed that we weren't sure what that was but boy! did we wanted it! I honestly can't remember much else about my food. I think it was good. I'm pretty sure we all liked what we ordered. All I remember is the Hilo Fried Rice was unlike any fried rice that I had had before. It was slightly sweet, slightly salty, enjoyably savory and DELICIOUS! 10/10 - would go back and get more nom-tastic fried rice.
(5)Karissa L.
My family came to eat here when we were vacationing in hilo since it was within walking distance of the hotel. It was also raining and since we weren't familiar with the area we didn't feel like venturing around for other options. The food was good but nothing spectacular. The portions were decent and my family of 4 shared 3 dishes. My only complaint is the lady who showed us to our seats. She initially seated us in the middle of the room but my mom asked if we could sit in one of the booths instead (and there were plenty open booths). After this request, the waitress suddenly started to talk to my mom as if my mom did not speak English: loud voice, slow pace, enunciating every single syllable. Very very rude. If there was a problem with us sitting at another table, she could have just said sorry we can't switch tables for you. There was no need to speak to my mom like that.
(2)Dee M.
Crab cakes served with garlic mash were delish! Paniolo Ribs were a hit with my Dad and Uncle! My Husband's burger was unseasoned, but ok. Fernando (live music) was a nice touch! Saving the best for last: the fried ice cream = broke da mout!!
(4)Tierney I.
Service is good. Really kind and patient and they mean no harm. However, my second time going to this place it was Happy hour which meant we could only order form the "happy hour menu" WHIXH was very limited and no so good. The steak fries had no flavor and the Philly steak sandwich was lacking flavor as well. The Kalau pork sliders were ok but had too much Kalua pork in it. And the worst part about this place is the lemon drop!!!!! Tastes like straight water!!!!!! So we settlers with beer.
(2)Rosalina R.
Their Fettucine with Tiger Shrimp was awesome very very tasty loved it very much so did my friend; very good service very professional but personable nice entertainment too loved their bread with dip
(4)Cici Z.
Waited for 30+ min for our lunch although the place doesn't seem busy at that moment . Food is just okay
(2)Deanna M.
My boyfriend and I recently ate here for dinner. I was a little nervous about the food quality...as the restaurant did not seem to be that updated. I was more than pleasantly surprised! The waiter was extremely polite and attentive. He was friendly and warm and was sure to keep us a priority even though he was quite busy. The plate of complimentary bread was delicious! The accompanying butter? tasted a little like cream cheese with artichoke...naturally I asked for seconds. We had the crab dip with pita bread as an appetizer and once again...absolutely fantastic!! Main course: I ordered the burger, medium well. It was HUGE and juicy. The avocadosauce on top made the burger, though! The boyfriend got some sort of pesto pasta with shrimp...he cleaned his plate, but I didn't really care for the pasta, a little bland. Ambiance was nice. Live guitar! He took requests (which I appreciated). He played a great mix of local tunes and oldies (Beatles, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, etc.). Overall, great spot. I plan to go back for sure.

I once had the Punalu'u omelet and it was soooo Ono! Tried other veggie omelet a at other places and nothing compares
(5)Amy W.
I thought this restaurant was okay when I went a week ago for Sunday lunch. It had more of a local feel than touristy. Parked along the street, literally at the end of their main walk way. Nothing amazing. Though the prices really was what the place had going for it. I ordered a turkey wrap and it was around $10. The dish itself was fine. We had a seat next to the window. Maybe because it was a slow day, we were there around noon. I noticed our server dropped off our food, went to another table, returned to ours and asked how was everything, before we had a bite. Not a big deal. But the service could definitely been better if she had came back at ALL between than and when we waved her over for a check. No check in party way though the meal, and water refills from the moment we sat down. Service really needed improvement.
(2)Wes J.
Great food, great price, great staff, great ambiance and great experience! Certainly one of the better restaurants I've eaten at in Hilo.
(5)Donna R.
Service was extremely slow but our server did apologize and said there was a large group there at the moment. That was fine since I was with some friends and we had a lot of catching up to do. That said, once our food arrived it was lukewarm at best (tepid pancakes are NOT appetizing!). I would have gladly waited a few more minutes for hot food! Prices were fair and our server very attentive and friendly. It seems to be a reasonable go-to for folks staying in Banyan Drive area and I would be willing to give it a second chance.
(3)Fofo H.
I highly recommend the coconut shrimp plate. Pretty presentation with the shrimp on skewers stabbed into a piece of grilled pineapple. Service was good, the place was clean.
(4)Traci B.
Let's face it- Hilo is somewhat limited on their eating places. What is offered is to the extremes of too expensive and hoity toity to downright scary looking. Heck, some were hoity toity and scary looking!!! This place looked like a casual place but turned out to be a bit on the higher side. We had a super nice waiter- and great service which is another scarcity in Hilo. This waiter we enjoyed very much. He was friendly AND speedy! The prices were a bit high and the selection was a bit slim. The menu is a two large print page dity with about 10 meals to select from. The food turned out to be very good although the price for the very small salad bar was a little over the top. Long story short- we had a good dinner and the Mai Tais were delicious.
(4)Caleb J.
Never had a bad time or meal at this place. I've been here about 10 times for either breakfast or dinner/drinks. The staff has always been friendly with me, the happy hour food is good, and the music has always created a nice atmosphere. The musician is super friendly.
(4)Josh K.
Great food! The salad bar was great. Steak was cooked to perfection, the chicken was delicious, and the shrimp was probably the best I've ever eaten. Service could have been a bit better, took about 10 minutes for my water to be refilled. Other than that, a gem.
(4)courtney r.
Man, I feel like this place doesn't get enough love! This is a great little place with impeccable food! Service is kind of hit or miss but the quality of food and presentation makes up for it in a big way! I've had several menu items and I've never been disappointed. On some evenings they'll offer live music, which is a treat when you have visitors from the mainland. The decor is kitschy but very cute. Plenty of seating and they offer larger tables if you need. Kalua pig wontons are amazing! Burgers are excellent! One of the best loco mocos on the island! A bit on the pricey side (not as bad as other places though) but worth it in my opinion. I've only been here once when it was super crowded and that was because a tour bus stopped in. Hilo doesn't have too many options, but this is one of the better ones!
(4)Cj M.
My grandma really likes this place, so we come here for her. There's nothing wrong with the food, it's really good, and the service is good also. But there is hardly any parking, due to their location. If there were more parking, I'd definitely take my family here more often. Or at least add it to our list of choices when we ask each other, "Hey, where do we feel like eating today?"
(4)Joel S.
The food here was none too impressive given the price. The salad bar costs and it provides little in the way of selection other than kimchee and the usual bean salad. The rolls that we were served did not impress us despite the garlic butter spread inside. The pork ribs, on the other hand, were good, but accompanied by only the measilest portion of vegetables and a smallish twice-baked potato. The restaurant itself has a few interesting decorations including two lines across the window which show the levels of the 1957 and 1960 tsunamis. Strangely, the place does not accept American Express even though it is connected to a hotel.
(3)Mary W.
Happy hour with Brother Herb and his guitar a pleasant way to wind down a day.

Went here on a Sunday on a fluke. We were trying to find a place to grab lunch that wasn't Ken's which i'm not too fond of. First we thought of Ponds but i've been there before and wasn't impressed. We stumbled upon Coconut Grill which is directly next to Ponds. I must admit as we parked and the bus of a large group of Japanese tourists were leaving I was a bit apprehensive. Same feeling as I walked in and saw what must have been a nice looking diner at one time... MANY years ago. We were seated by a friendly hostess and parused the menu. Quite extensive actually. I thought the prices were quite reasonable. I asked the waitress a few questions and decided on the Shoyu Chicken my partner had the Frech dip burger. I had ordered the Mai Tai but at the waitresses suggestion changed it to the Tsunami. She said they used fresh juice in the Tsunami and it was a better drink. She was right. I was quite good. We alson ordered the salad bar. I personally thought the pickings at the salad bar were quite small, but adequate. The food came out quickly and low and behold, it was really very good. Large portions and more than enough to satisfy our hunger. The High: Good food, reasonable prices. Good service The Low: Kind of shabby, needs a spring cleaning. Chances we'll be back: Yes! Much better then Ken's or Ponds in our opinion.
(4)Heather R.
This place was nice, connected to our hotel. The food was okay, kinda greasy but the folks were nice. There's a nice little view outside if you can position yourself to see the lagoon.
(3)Brandi S.
Went with a big group and everybody loved the food. Got the bleu cheese burger-GREAT! Salad bar was minimal but we arrived around 8pm. Service was slow-took almost 10 minutes to get a table (plenty of space) and another 10 to get an adult beverage. However, our server was super nice and accommodating.
(3)Mitch T.
When i got to restaurant, it was semi busy, but still had empty tables. Nonetheless, the waiter decided I needed to sit at a table that still needed to be wiped, so he wiped it and escorted me to seat. When I sat down, the table smelled like it was wiped with a dirty rag. The waitress was okay. Not excited or even enthusiastic. Just doing her job. I ordered the steak, which was pretty good and they keep your soda filled, although only 2 refills allowed. Kind of pricey..
(2)Amy L.
We have had lunch and breakfast here and were very pleased with both! At dinner I had coconut shirmp, and my hubby had mahi and both were excellent! They have lots of menu options for lunch, dinner and breakfast. The service was great, and the prices were very fair for the area. We will definitely return! ;)

I went to one of their special "brunches", which wasn't a brunch because they were closed from 11 AM-2 PM (prime brunch hours), but I'll overlook that for now. The food was mediocre at best. The only thing that was good was the prime rib. The mashed potatoes were from a box and rehydrated. The poke was fishy. The vegetables were previously frozen. The only drink that was included in the brunch was an atrociously sweet and fake fruit punch. I wouldn't have paid $15 for the meal, let alone $30 per person. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

Stayed at the Hilo Seaside Hotel and Coconut Grill is the on-site restaurant. Considered the many options near here including a couple of neighboring hotel restaurants, but ended up sticking close by. The sounds of the coqui frogs can be a little disturbing at nice on Banyan Drive so I headed back to the comfortable confines of Coconut. This is a moderately sized restaurant. The atmosphere here is low key. It has a Tommy Bahama casual type vibe. Parking is somewhat limited in the hotel parking lot and around this area, but you should be able to find some if you drive around. The menu is best described as a hodgepodge of many cuisines. There are Hawaiian luau items, in addition to local favorites. On Wednesday nights, they have a surf and turf type special in which lobster tail and choosing two items out of five offered is $24.95 which I decided to go with. The special also includes a choice of rice or mashed potatoes, a salad bar and garlic bread. Started off with the salad and garlic bread. The salad was just okay. Not the best quality, but more fair. The garlic bread was more like a breadstick with garlic butter in the middle. It was warm and soft which I liked. As for the main entrees, I chose the pork ribs and sirloin to go with the lobster tail. The pork ribs were the best of the three selections. It was fall off the bone good. Very tender. The sirloin was decent, though the cut was kind of small. Given the size of the meal, I think more of it would have been too much food. As for the lobster tail, it was disappointing. Very tough. There was a butter sauce to accompany the dish, but it tasted a bit indulgent. It was not a great meal, but a fairly solid one. Kind of on the high end price wise. Based on the locale and the portions however, I think this is an okay spot for a fancier or special occasion type meal in Hilo.

Oh my goodness was that an amazing breakfast! My steak and eggs were perfectly cooked and the fried rice was the best I have ever had. The prices were reasonable for the local and the service was super. Two thumbs up!!!

Right now at the restaurant, no one was attending us! We need to ask them to come and give us the menu ! Don't like it. Food is pricy compare to the portion size.

Are you staying at the hilo seaside hotel? Eat here, it's convenient. Otherwise I'd prob skip. Eh food, eh atmosphere... Good fresh squeezed juice selection though - I had guava. I also ate at some of the restaurants in town... way better. (Cafe Pesto was amazing!)

If you stay at the Hilo Seaside Hotel, you get a free breakfast here. It's better than continental breakfasts everywhere else! What you get for "free": - Coffee, tea, or soft-drink (they don't say that, but if you ask they will) - Choice of "healthy" breakfast, pancakes or local style breakfast - Local Style: One large scoop of rice (or home fries), choice of meat (sausage, ham, spam, bacon) and two eggs. Really, for "free" I can't complain. I haven't had anything else here, so I couldn't judge it for anything else.

This is probably the best restaurant in Hilo, Big Island of Hawaii. It is connected beside Seaside hotel which I stayed; sorry, but the hotel is horrible, so avoid it at all cost! I repeat, SEASIDE HOTEL is horrible! Coconut Grill has a warm family restaurant feel to it, as the restaurant has diner style seats. Service is excellent as bread and drinks are served right away once you get seated. The quality of the dishes are excellent with good sized portions and the waiters do try very hard to make sure you're happy. There is also an excellent salad bar for such a small restaurant. I see a lot of local Hawaiians eating here, so it just makes me feel that this is truly one special restaurant in Hilo, Hawaii.

friendly staff, it took 27 menits for our breakfast of four party, too long, food was good , price fair

There is NOTHING vegetarian here. AT ALL. I came with a group of people and got the $13 salad bar rather than making everyone else go to a different restaurant. The salad bar is crap. One of those kind where there is just brown iceburg lettuce, some squishy cherry tomatoes, and jello. Ugh.

Enjoyed the 8oz. Rib Eye and 1lb. King Crab Legs, and salad...I am full. This is a good place. I would eat here again. Mom had real dungeness crab cakes. Not those frozen hockey pucks. Ask first if they have fresh because they do have the frozen ones when they don't have the real deal. Shrimp dish was a crowd pleaser.

The menu offered a choose between a grilled mahi mahi or ahi sandwich, but the waitress said they did not have the mahi mahi due to high prices. You would think that fresh fish would be plentiful when you visit an island in the Pacific. I ordered the grilled ahi and the only thing good about it was the french fries that were served on the side. My wife ordered the ribs, which were served with potato salad and rice. The potato salad was made with macaroni noodles which she can not eat due to a food allergy. We were surprised, which was made worse when the waitress told us they can not make any substitutions. There are plenty of places to visit in Hilo. We came here on the advice of a local person - we would not return.

Wait staff prompt and courteous, food good. Got the shrimp special, 3 different flavors! Yum!

Everything that could go wrong did. Had to send back the 3 Long Island ice teas that were ordered in the beginning by my Mom, Aunty and boyfriend, they all came out different shades, lacking consistency and flavor. Boyfriend then ordered a Mai tai and the pineapple juice tasted rancid, so we had to send that back too. For dinner we ordered a $28 crab and NY steak dinner to share. Crab was obviously frozen then cooked and then refrozen and reboiled at least once or twice because the shells were almost impossible to open they were so soft, plus the meat was still cold or room temp in most of it. The melted "butter" had a short grey hair floating in it! The medium rare steak was medium well and so dry we had to drown it in ketchup. We had tons of mystery oil on the plate. Not sure if it came from the steak or veggies. Our waitress, although nice, dropped plates while trying to clear the table. And to top it off my boyfriend just spent the last fifteen minutes throwing up with chills and cold sweats since we got home. We're thinking it was the pineapple juice because its the only thing we didn't share. If it wasn't my boyfriends great grandmothers birthday we would have made a big deal about how horrible everything was. Never going back and hoping no one else wastes their time or money. This would make the perfect nominee for that TV show Kitchen Nightmares!

ugh, why do I keep coming back? Maybe it's the casual island setting and beautiful bay window view of ice pond. Maybe it's the friendly, upbeat service, and prompt soda refills. Maybe it's the outrageously large desserts. It's definitely NOT their main entrees. It's good for 1-2 bites, and then I'm over it. I recently had the furikake seared ahi, and I ordered it rare. 2 generous pieces came to me well done on a mountain of tasteless veggies. My first bite was the most disappointing experience I've had in a while, as the fish tasted old and spoiled. I swirled it around in the watery teriyaki sauce in hopes of saving it, but with no luck. I also hoped my stuffed baked potato would make up for it, but that tasted old too. I'm not usually one who sends food back because food should be cooked to order to begin with. Also the food service was painfully slow. We were there for a good 2 hours and there were only 3 other tables in our section. I really don't know why I choose this place every now and then, but I won't be returning any time soon.

There are things that are good, there are things not so good, nothing amazing and nothing abhorrent. All in all if i could do a 2.5 star that would be about square. id bump to 3 on the basis that ive never a horrible experience here. The food. Most of it is pretty good. Ive eaten quite a few things off the menu over the time they have been open. Both before and after they have adopted menu and pricing changes. The main dishes are often times brilliant but most of the sides are pretty meh. Most food enthusiasts could chef up a better vegetable dish then frozen string beans soaked in garlic butter. I bet i could also do a better baked potato using condiments and an easy bake oven. When you say baked potato on a $15 dollar plate of food i better get some fresh bacon and cheese. The baked potato here is a weakly flavored mix of a paltry amount of butter and some bacon bits that come out of a bottle. No detectable trace of cheese or additional spices. Next time i order ill just get the mash, a side of bacon and ask for some butter. The fries are homestyle fries, average. Rice and mash, those are pretty hard to screw up so no comment. Parking. Probably the primary complaint i have about this place. They have loads of dining space and no parking. Ive never seen the place crowded probably because if you can't find parking you may as well just go somewhere else. I've had dinner dates there where I've had to park at Reeds bay and walk all the way to Coconut Grill. I haven't had problems parking at reeds bay but I am wary as I'm not sure of the theft or parking legalities there. Service, also a meh. They are not horribly negligent but they do show an obvious lack in customer assurance. I've noticed this change after the pricing and menu changes. Perhaps better prices means less tips? Bottom line services was better when the prices were higher but not much better. Weather they are busy or not the service is hit or miss. I've had excellent services and ive had subpar service. Nothing horrible but I have experienced such detractors as having to ask for the check 3 or more times, never getting a refill on water. ordering a soda because you asked for water and they failed to bring, or waiting a notably but not abhorrent amount of time for food or to order. They have never botched my order and have always shown regard as far as being notified about food allergies (lactose Intollerence). Prices. Bad before. $15-$30 dinner range on glorified diner food. Better now. $9-20ish for dinner on glorified diner food. Definitely not plate lunch style or drive in food but absolutely not anything around the degree of fine dining. 18% gratuity included for parties larger than 6, meh. Atmosphere. Its semi tikibarish, tourist trap, dive if thats even possible. It seems the place has a difficulty identifying with its diverse customer base. Its like that Haole uncle that's cool until he starts trying to act local or that Local tour guide that makes up bullshit to impress his tour group. The changes they have made are completely geared towards the local crowd but the overall atmosphere strains to cater to tourists. A good example: I went in with some family to enjoy a simple lunch. I was belly-aching for shoyu pork. They don't serve that there and I knew it. A small sliver of hope offered itself in the form of this buffet spread that had roast pork or beef maybe. I don't know because i was snidely denied the buffet as it was for some tour group that had come in and left before us. After briefly trying to charm my way onto the buffet spread the waitress tried to console me saying that the buffet isnt nearly as good as anything else on the menu. Odd. The place seems clean enough.

We stumbled upon the Coconut Grill after finding a handful of restaurants closed on Sunday. Typical for Hilo. We were seated and greeted by our friendly server right away. I had the ny steak with mashed potatoes. My husband had the hibachi (protein marinated in soy-ginger sauce) sampler plate which came with hibachi style chicken, steak and tiger prawn. My steak was cooked to my preference but the cut wasn't NY. The mashed potatoes were decent, and the sauteed veggies were properly cooked and seasoned. My husband gave me one of his prawns which tasted very gummy indicative of being way overcooked. We both had their draft beer which was good. I can't say that anything impressed us especially at this price range. Service was good though.

Meh. Nothing that'll blow your socks off. We had come over to the Big Island for the day and needed a pit stop before our flight back to HNL. We hadn't eaten anything substantial that day during our adventures out in volcano land and so the food tasted pretty good but was not amazing. The waitress was accommodating and knew that we were in a hurry to catch a 7 p.m. fllight. She was very good about working with our table quickly. The food seemed pretty overpriced. About $26 for a crab cake platter. Also about the same price for a coconut shrimp platter. You do get to help yourself to the salad bar, but that is not that exciting to me. I opted for the pork ribs appetizer for my meal. They were generously coated with a sweet and tasty glaze sauce and were good. My father-in-law went for the kalua pork quesadilla - it was interesting. The decor is lacking. Very typical diner-like atmosphere with plasticky table cloths and booths that are not locked into place (I accidently moved the booth seat as I was getting up to leave and I'm not a big person!). They do have markers that show where past tsunami water levels hit. That was probably the only highlight.

I got the fisherman's catch, which is basically fish and chips. It was very good and unlike most fish and chips I've had, the fish was a big piece and the breading was perfect. The french fries were perfect as well. It can be a little pricey but if you want a nice meal come here.
(5)Shellie W.
I had a burger my husband the Katsu Chicken...thinking no can miss... Ok..the burger wasn't bad but even with the $2 off coupon you were still forking out $13 and the waffle fries and my husband's Katsu over fried but not burned and you could tell cooked in old grease...not too pleseant to eat with only water to drink and with the coupons still $35 not really worth the money. :(

Went here for dinner the night after the tsunami warning. A bit short-staffed and service was slow. Had the furikake chicken katsu with rice.A generous portion, but the side of steamed vegetables was very small. However, the garlic butter rolls were delicious. Overall the food itself was just average given the price. Would repeat if I could be sure service improved.

Located in the Hilo Seaside Hotel (very nice koi pond!). I consumed: Furikake Chicken Katsu & coffee. The coffee was not very good, but it wasn't the worst ever; not burned or anything. It was kind of weak and tasted a little like straw. I would expect every establishment on the Big Island to have great coffee! The katsu was decent. I couldn't taste the furikake at all, though, so that was kind of a disappointment. Maybe they should use more furikake. The breading tasted like they used oil that was slightly old, but it didn't really bother me until about 45 minutes later when I got a really bad stomach ache. :( My friend ordered a crab cake sandwich. The whole wheat bun had furikake on the top instead of sesame seeds. I thought that was cool; never have seen that on Oahu! The place was pretty empty at about 2:15 pm. We got seated quickly and were served quickly, so that was nice.

Had breakfast here every morning of our trip (we had vouchers so what the heck) The wait staff is super friendly, the wait for food can take a little while though depending on our busy it is. We sampled the french toast (a little under done but good) the fried rice a little on the sweet side and kinda dry, the egg's are done the way you want (I like over medium which many places mess up but they do pretty good) the pancakes are really light and fluffy almost like cake, need a lot of syrup but who wants it any other way. Over all we enjoyed our meal's and will recommend the hotel and the restaurant to our friends and family.

Coconut grill... What Happened???? I come here often for lunch and dinner. The food has always been good and I have never complained about the service because they have always seemed to be on it, BUT NOT THIS TIME!!! We reserved a table for 5 on a Saturday night. Upon arrival we noticed a few tables open, but waited about 5 minutes while they cleared up our table. Our waiter was nice, but seemed a little out of it !?! We noticed that he was super busy taking orders, serving food, collecting payment, bussing tables for all tables in our section... let's just say he was doing it all....! We had hard time grabbing his attention .. our glass of water was empty before we got our first refill. Waited over an hour just to receive COLD food. NOT GOOD nor exceptable, esp since we ordered prime ribs, rack of ribs and chicken katsu... all items that should be hot! We ended up just eating a little and taking the rest home since no one likes eating cold food. My mom was ready to complain IF our waiter asked us how everything was. . Which he didn't. Bad experience! !!!

It was OK, but I walked out thinking "salad bar FAIL".... from a marketing perspective. To me the joy of a salad bar restaurant is that it's an automatic part of your dinner. Not at Coconut Grill. As a result, I didn't order an entree and just ordered the soup and salad bar option which as I recall was about $14. Soup was very salty but I'm a salt hound so that didn't bother me, and the salad bar was OK although surprisingly limited in size and options for the price. So to me the total FAIL was that the entrees seemed expensive, but do not include the salad bar. It's an expensive add-on to an already expensive dinner that's already going to come with its own sides of starch and vegetable. So it just made no sense to me. Plus I think they had a "one trip" option for the salad bar, which again just directly contradicts the marketing strength of a salad bar. I would really hate to be the server trying to police the "one trip" option. So the salad bar was not really that great, and I paid about $18 including tax and tip, and felt like I would have enjoyed a regular $10- $12 salad from another restaurant more. Service was fine and it was clean.

Great location. Perfect views and decor. I had the turkey Benedict which is on home made corn bread. I chose the 1/2 order which comes with choice of fry it or home fries. Brewed fresh try the Ali'i Roast. And for dessert I had a double bloodie Mary which is spicy and delicious.

Very good local food and good service. Nice salad bar. I can't eat soy, so the chef offered to prepare my crab cakes in a separate pan. That was really appreciated. Everyone enjoyed the food from the fish and chips to prime rib and I loved my crab cakes! The happy hour is great with many drink specials to choose from.

5 stars for their new dinner specials!!! New York peppercorn steak with blue cheese, bacon, bourbon cream sauce; and their pesto ahi alfredo pasta with tomatoes & mushrooms. Sooo good. Highly recommend :)

3.5 stars We were staying at the adjoining Hilo Seaside Hotel and they offered vouchers for free breakfast from Coconut Grill. There were three options for the free breakfasts: 1) an healthy option of a half papaya, a mini bowl of hot oatmeal, banana bread, and strawberry yogurt; 2) flapjack griddle pancakes, with ham and and two eggs; and 3) the Locals Breakfast which was two eggs, choice of link sausage, ham, port sausage, or bacon, choice of rice or home fried potatoes, and choice of white or wheat toast. Each breakfast option comes with choice of coffee or tea or orange juice. The coffee, which is Kona Paradise coffee, is refillable, but the orange juice is not. Not being a fan of papaya, we choice to order the pancakes and the locals breakfasts. Our server was great - she was friendly and professional. Our breakfasts tasted fine. Our eggs were cooked the way we requested. With the pancakes came coconut syrup (yum!) and maple syrup. And for our toast, our server brought us strawberry jam and guava jam (yum!). The pancakes were huge. As we were eating our food, we saw another table getting the waffles topped with fresh strawberries and that looked really good. There are a lot more breakfast options if you order off of the regular menu. But for free breakfast, this worked out great for us and filled us up for the day ahead.

I ate here 3 days in a row on account of complimentary breakfast tickets for staying in the hotel. Breakfast thrice. Dinner twice (on account of Ponds being closed for renovations at the time) if I can I will NOT come here again... (Except for free breakfast, cuz you know, it's free). Every time I have eaten here the service is probably the worst I have ever received. This is coming from a former server who understands the stresses of the service industry, gives quite a bit of grace to servers and tips usually 20% even if the service is just average. Constantly these cons plagued me time and time again while dining here: * I have waited at least 20 minutes for being seated even if there are open tables. * It took forever to get a drink or any type of order in * The servers do not follow up on you and will disappear for 20 minutes at a time * the servers are bad about clearing plates after you've pushed the plates away. I.e. Appetizers, beer bottles, etc * If you ask a random server (this has happened when the server disappears for 20 mins) for a simple request they will yell for the other server or ignore you with an attitude or a ::hold on finger::. Totally unprofessional and Moby Dick move. Overall the food is pretty good, but it's almost like you have to seat yourself and be overly assertive to flag down your server every time you need something which becomes a chore and ruins what could be an otherwise enjoyable meal. This place could be a goldmine if they had a busboy, were more attentive to their clientele and had signs to where their is only 1 open entrance. So, so sad the proper management just isn't there. P.s. Treston and Star are the best servers here. Treston by far. Props bruh for comping the cooks mistake. Only reason I gave this review 2 stars instead of one.

It's a cute little restaurant that's attached to the Hilo Seaside Hotel. If you were staying at the Hilo Seaside, like I tend to do while in Hilo, this place is clearly a convenience for you and/or your family and friends for breakfast lunch and dinner. I found myself here on a recent January 2015 Sunday morning having breakfast before flying back to Honolulu. I have eaten here on occasion, but haven't filed a review here till recently. The ambiance and atmosphere was quiet and nice on a Sunday morning. The restaurant is very orderly and clean. There was only one table that was occupied and it was near the entrance. I noticed that the staff here were talking amongst themselves while I was looking over the menu. I guess when the restaurant is nearly empty, there is some downtime, specially on a Sunday morning. Even though, the experience here was short, nice, and quite good. I liked this place and it's one of the more suitable places for getting your breakfast on, or any meal for that matter. Coconut Grill restaurant is located at 126 Banyan Way in Hilo. It's probably a stand alone restaurant, but don't know if I could have charged my meals to my hotel room at the Hilo Seaside hotel. They probably operate differently, although I never checked. It's a good idea to check. There is limited parking if you were just wanting to dine in the restaurant, but there is plenty of parking if you were staying at the Hilo seaside property. There was some parking slots in front of the restaurant. The Coconut Grill accepts the major credit cards, so that's always a plus for me. It was kind of weird seeing the staff making small talk amongst themselves, but I guess you do what you need to do to pass the time on a slow Sunday morning. I was escorted to a window table, looking out towards Kalanianaole Street, then a minute later, the server came and took my order. It was quick service, however the restaurant was almost empty anyhow. I ultimately chose the flapjack club, which is 3 buttermilk pancakes, eggs, and some sort of meat I've forgotten. I also ordered a side of French fries, which turned out to be seasoned potato clumps. That was not really cool. The drink was orange juice. I took the seasoned potatoes in a take out box for a later time and enjoyed the pancakes. It was pretty nice way to enjoy Sunday in Hilo. The total cost of this meal was around $18. A bit stiff for breakfast, but I guess it's worth it after running 50km from Hilo to Volcano the day before! Celebration time! The prices aren't terribly high, but it be overpriced, because it can be - since its attached to the Hilo Seaside hotel. The service was very personable and I was asked twice by different people if I was doing okay. Tabasco sauce on pancakes is quite nice as well. Still, overall, the Coconut Grill restaurant is the way to go, if you are in need of a place to eat. I would recommend this place to check out and you may be pleasantly surprised. Support local! B

Decided to try this place again. Unfortunately the wait for the food was too long. Several other tables ordered and left before I received my breakfast. It took 45 minutes to be served and the waitress was very slow and a chatterbox. Less talking and more service would be a better combination. How long does it take to make a coco moco?

Just landed in Hilo, HI. and we were hungry. We gave this a shot. Food not bad. Kids enjoyed their meals. Waitress (Rain) was friendly and working her but off alone.
