Ayuthaya was where I was first exposed to the wonderful flavors of Thai cuisine. I remember that night perfectly. It was a hot, humid night (as usual) and I went there with my boyfriend, who's mom had spent much of childhood in Thailand, so he was basically brought up to be a Thai food connoisseur. "What should I try?", I asked, as I was a little intimidated by the menu. He suggested the yellow curry, the green papaya salad, or the cashew chicken. We ended up getting all three and sharing, and this is how it all began... My insatiable cravings and addiction to Thai food- in fact, all spicy, international food. Thai food was the gateway drug into the world of Ethiopian, Indian and all other foods tantalizing to the tastebuds. Over time I learned what my Ayuthaya favorites were: The yellow curry, Green curry with ahi and pad thai. The Thai iced tea is better than anywhere else I have ever had it. They have great lunch specials where you can get combos (huge servings) for under $7. They also have brown rice available for all you health freaks, as well as plenty of vegetarian options on their menu.

You are never too sure when you walk into a restaurant in Hilo, its always hit or miss. This place was not too impressive from the look of it, small, a few tables, and guy prepping vegetables while watching tv on the corner. When we entered, there was no one else inside, at around 630pm. We were seated next to the tv, which was convenient because they had a few good shows on, received the menus. The waitress, though very nice, handed the menus to us as a stack and had us distribute it. She did the same with the water. When we were ordering, she had somewhat of a hard time understanding us, but we worked our way through it. As with any restaurant, the food is what is critical. We each picked a dish: eggplant beef, pad thai, red curry, masaman curry, sweet and sour pork, fried rice, and a fried chicken appetizer. Right from the get go, the food looked delicious, well made, and well placed for aesthetics. The red curry and massaman curry (both pretty similar) were rich and flavorful, with big chunks of veges and meats, and went well with the sticky rice (though the rice was a bit hard). The fried chicken appetizer was good, breaded a bit differently than what you might expect from KFC, similar to tempura but different. Pad thai was good, the eggplant beef looked a bit overcooked, but it was ok, and tasted more like basil. I wasn't too big of a fan of the sweet and sour. The portions were also generous, and the pricing was similar to that on the mainland (SWeeet :D) at about $8-$10 a plate. Overall the experience is good and I would recommend this place. The service was okay, a little bit slow, but that won't be an issue if you have good company. Solid 4 stars for this place, I will definitely be coming back.

Ya it's a hole in the wall but I'm totally a fan. Good food and great prices, give me some more!

small hole in a wall place. Came here with my mom and her co workers for their Christmas party dinner couple years ago. This is my moms favorite thai restaurent in Hilo... I'm not that much of a thai food fan... and after moving away from Hawaii, when visiting Hilo, I'm more focused on local food. So I'm probably never coming back here. Street parking. If you're in Hilo, you must try here for Thai food! After eating thai food in Thailand... I can say I had better. 3 stars for good food and small dining area.

I've heard some good things about this place from local Thai people here, so I tried it for lunch one day. Like other reviewers described, this place is a definite hole in the wall and clean. I ordered the pick-and-choose plate from the buffet for $6 which is a great value. My husband ordered chicken laab from the menu. On my plate were red curry with chicken, stir-fry green beans with chicken and rice. It was a large mound of food. They do not skimp here. The curry has very good Thai flavor, however it had sweetness to it which came as no surprise to me in Hilo. Traditional red curry is not sweet. Now if this were green curry, i would have expected it to be a bit sweet as that is how it is in Thailand. The stir-fry was ok. I liked that they added chopped kaffir lime leaves to it. They use dark chicken meat in all their chicken dishes. My husband's dish, laab gai was very good. They added chopped lemongrass and fresh Thai chili to the dish. It was seasoned almost perfectly. We both agreed that it could have used a bit more lime juice. Traditional laab is not made with lemongrass, however, we did not mind it since it was a nice element. Also laab is usually seasoned with red chili flakes or powder, but we appreciate fresh chilis used here. I liked this a lot and would definitely make my laab using fresh chili now. Oh, we also had Thai iced coffee which was yummy. Everyone likes Thai iced tea but it is over-rated, if you ask me. Overall, i would stop by again if i was hungry and in the area. You can't beat the value and portions here for plate lunch.

The owners have changed the name of the restaurant to "Po". We just loved this place. The food was fresh, lots of vegetables, and they were very accommodating on special requests for our kids. The service was excellent. I highly recommend Po.

I have a very personal relationship with this restaurant. My friends and I were extreme regulars for a number of years, eating there multiple times per week. It's my gold standard for hearty, flavorful Thai food... and Thai iced teas. I think 75% of its clientele would label themselves as regulars. More a community with the shared experience of this place rather than just a restaurant. Hope all is well for Pet and crew...

Really good Thai. Definitely a whole in the wall, but very nice service and delicious food. Portions are huge (2 hungry adults and 2 kids ordered three entrees and took half home). Also inexpensive. Vegetarian entrees were $7.95 plus a charge for rice (annoying). Loved the red curry. The pad thai was good and the basil dish was also good, but could have used slightly more flavor. Would definitely go regularly if I lived nearby. Can't beat the value. Yum!
