Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

Why I ordered pho at a restaurant that was so obviously a Chinese restaurants...beats me. I mean...90% of the menu were Chinese dishes, the owners spoke fluent Chinese...and I ordered pho. Of course, I was going back and forth deciding...should I really order pho? I'm actually very critical of it. But, I can't refuse pho if I see it on the menu, so I decided...yes...I'll order it. I was actually surprised when I tasted the pho broth. It was a LOT better than I expected it to be. Of course, it was nowhere close to the best pho I've ever had. The broth definitely lacked flavor and seemed way too clear. I definitely had to add the hoisin sauce and sriracha to give it a kick. However, the broth still had a good flavor, and while it was very clear, it seemed like it was very...healthy. Like, they don't use any MSG, that many other pho places seem to use. However, would I order this again if I ever came back? No. I'm so particular about my pho, and this just didnt have the heartiness and flavor I was looking for. I'll probably have to stick to pho from legit Vietnamnese places. However, the extensive menu will probably bring me back here...especially because of the fact that it's so close to the airport if I'm ever sent back to Hilo for work. Roast duck noodle soup anyone?

Located in a strip mall next to the Hilo Walmart. This is a Chinese/Vietnamese noodle and rice plate shop. Service is efficient. The Pho here is average and the broth is not very rich. It' OK for a quick noodle fix but there's better in Hilo.
(3)Yuzen Y.
I have been here several times and was not impressed with any of the items that I ordered. In particular, their pho was a disappointment. The broth wasn't very 'clean' tasting and lacked flavor. A tip to potential customers: employees do not come by frequently to refill your water, so make sure you make it stretch!

Located in the busy Hilo mall next to Wal-Mart, you can expect higher prices for their items. But higher prices doesn't mean better quality. Service, in my opinion, was friendly and quick. Immediately brought a menu and order was taken quickly. The food doesn't take very long, but the two times I patronized this establishment I chose to avoid the crowd being one of three tables. The food is not impressive. I ordered the summer rolls which took just as long as the pho to get to my table. The shrimp was paper thin and pork overcooked. The peanut sauce was salty and consumed my flavor pallet. I also very quickly ate the combination beef pho which wasn't impressive at all. The meat slices were thin and scarce. The tendons and tripe were paper thin and were even more elusive to find in the bland broth. The only redeeming quality was that the noodles were "al dente" - which is a personal preference. Water refills were not offered so drink sparingly unless you want to wave someone down. Overall, the price for the food doesn't match up; essentially, the flavor/portion was equally disappointing. Not what you'd expect for pho if you know what good pho is.

Every time I visit my grandma in Hilo we always end up here for lunch at least once. The portions are big and the prices are reasonable. I always like to try different things, but their best dish is the roast pork and duck mein. Your average food stop, nothing special but still hits the spot

The best Chinese/Vietnamese cafe-style/noodle house you can get on the island (which isn't saying MUCH about this place). But, when you live here the food is never as good as it is back home (if you're from San Franicsco) so even if it's mediocre, it's still the best there is out here.... *sigh* The noodle soups are pretty basic but it will definitely satisfy a noodle craving! I like the "duck mein soup", although their duck isn't as good as the roast duck back in the bay. It's not as fresh out here and it doesn't have that real "roasted on a stick over fire" sort of taste. Nor is it crispy like it should be when it's roasted. Their cha-siu isn't anything like what I'm used to. They slice it really thin here and the taste is very faint. I still don't know that I life it very much yet..... The spring rolls are very good. My fiancee and I also love the garlic shrimp plate. It's not family style here like the Asian restaurants back at home. Each plate you order is a personal dinner: meat, noodle or rice, and side salad. The chow mein is often a little on the greasier side. Although, the chicken they use in the chow mein isn't bad, and I hate chicken (so that says a lot about their chicken and how they cook it!). I am curious about the clear noodle. I asked the waitress what it was and she said that it's clear noodle. I asked if it was rice vermicelli and she said, "It's a clear noodle!", so I decided not to ask again. I believe it's rice vermicelli though(fun-see in Cantonese, pansit: Tagalog). Anyhow.... Oh, the pho is yummy too. And trust me, noodle soups CAN be messed up and not made right! They also have Thai iced tea which is done pretty well. They also serve bubble tea, which I have yet to try. This place is very well priced. We often spend just a little bit over $20.00 for the both of us and are always satisfied when we're done. The waitresses are always very friendly, even when we've walked in at the LAST minute being their LAST guests for the night.... I've also heard the main two women that probably own the place speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese so the food is authentic to a certain extent. I'm sure they have to cater to the preference and tastes of the locals though. I still highly recommend place! Tip: BYOB! We asked for alcoholic beverages and the waitress said, "No, you bring your own." The closest place is Island Naturals and we all know how cheap they are, right?? Plan ahead if you want a beer to wash down that noodle soup. ;)

I'm afraid that I wasn't impressed by 1 Plus 1 Cafe. There is better Vietnamese/Chinese food in town (Yen's Cafe) at a more moderate price. How someone can give a place serving mediocre food 4 stars is beyond me. And yes, parking can be a challenge, as you are competing with the Walmart crowd...
(2)Tessa D.
I blame this place for my current pho and duck addiction. I can distinctly recall being a middle schooler and coming here about once a week with my mother. Of course at that time it was still relatively new and busy, it has since lost it's hype. I always get the seafood pho with extra beef meatballs and well an order of duck if they have it. The pho is very satisfying, but is it the best pho I've ever had? No. They usually just have the broth, the noodles, and then whatever meat you ordered. It doesnt include some of the things other pho places include like onions, cilantro, garlic, etc. The duck is delicious, but the last few times I've been they haven't had any, I nearly cried. I have very fond memories of this place so I will most definitely stop by whenever I'm in town, but it has definitely gone down in quality since I was a child. Or maybe now that I've grown I actually know how to differentiate between amazing and average.

This restaurant has your fair share of Chinese and Vietnamese food. The seating area is pretty comfortable, booths to the left and right and tables and chairs in the middle. Service is pretty good and the menu has a very good amount of food to order. The Ginger chicken is my fave at this restaurant. The prices are very affordable and the portions are a nice size.
(4)Sean S.
Had the Special Dry Samin and it wasn't that special. The Crab Rangoon's were good though.
(3)Sara A.
There isn't much decor at 1 Plus 1 Cafe and the setup of the tables are all along the walls, with bigger tables in the middle of the room for larger parties. Right when you walk in you're greeted by a huge fish tank with little tiny fish inside. They're for decoration only. This kind of confuses me. Since this is the only decoration in the restaurant, why didn't they put more effort into making it look nice? Oh well. The service is friendly and we get our food fairly quickly. Some of my favorites to dine on are the crab and cream cheese rangoons (like won tons), spring rolls, chicken lettuce cups, and sweet sour chicken. Also, their boba teas are very delicious and smooth. I can't find too much fault in this place, but compared to other restaurants that serve similar food, 1 Plus 1 Cafe is just okay for me. I don't crave their food like I do with other places, so that's the reasoning behind my 3 star review.
(3)Norfariza N.
Fast and good service. Seafood chow mien and half fried chicken was good. I just didn't like the artificial crab meat and the crab rangoon was not great.
(4)Luke E.
I always get the garlic shrimp and an order of eight crab rangoons. They both have a particular taste that is always yummy and filling. I must admit, it took me a while to find something that I like to eat at this place. I used to get BBQ Chicken and Beef, but the first time I got it, I was expecting more of the L&L style of BBQ Chicken, but their BBQ chicken is less oily. I drink water fast, but they don't walk around to refill often. Most times you need to wave someone down. Food is served reasonably fast, depending on what you order and how busy they are.

If 1 Plus 1 Café where a person it would be a depressed lonely individual. It would wear black everyday, have a pale complexion and secretly desire death. 1 Plus 1 Café would listen to obscure instrumental music that mimicking the sounds of torque wrenches and water drops. It would utter only a few sentences a year and live in isolation hiding its freakish mannerism from society. To consider 1 Plus 1 café a circus freak would be a compliment; it would never be so motivated nor so interesting. The food borderlines on editable and the décor is so blaaah I want to poke my eyes out. My bone to pick with 1 Plus 1 Café isn't the horrendous food served or the dreadful customer service; it's the condition in which a Flowerhorn fish is kept. The poor little guy is presented as decoration at the front door. The fish tank draws your attention because it's the only thing in the 50-gallon tank. The nasty tank is filled with milky water hiding and suffocating its host. The situation with the fish is just bad. How can they treat a mascot with so little respect? I would recommend you stay away. Here is a picture a Flowerhorn (not the actual fish). library.thinkques ...

One of the best hidden secrets in Hilo! $7.25 for BBQ chicken rice plate, which is clearly locally bought. Comes with fried rice ($2 up charge) and fresh green salad with freaking basil and an amazing dressing on it. Spring rolls were crisp, tasty and fresh, with only a small outer layer of 'paper'. Their hot mustard is divine - tasty, smooth, mellow with a hard earthy bite - very strong and pairs well with a dollop of hoisin. Fried rice was long grain and had bits of char siu, roast pork and carrots. Not too firm and not to mushy; what a healthy portion. Chicken was tender and tasty, grilled without too much seasoning/ sauce. Dad got Roast Pork which was seriously so succulent and juicy, with a tender firmness. The seasoning was on the light side though the natural flavor of the meat was excellent. Service was fast and friendly, family owned for sure. They cool great food and are proud of it! Cannot wait to return - I will be trying their Char Siu!
(5)Leisha A.
Short and sweet, the food is consistently good, the service leaves a bit to be desired but overall I'm a total fan.
(4)Sofia C.
I'm giving these guys five starts purely for their roasted pork. It's insane. I traveled to Portland OR recently, a foodie mecca of sorts and couldn't find any roasted pork anywhere near as good as theirs. Otherwise their menu is pretty average......chinese/Vietnamese staples done OK. I would give it a 3.5 stars overall, but for that pork, lord help me, it gets a five. The roast duck is excellent too. Summer Rolls are super, most of the noodle soups are awesome too. Ambience, not so much, and probably the saddest fish on the planet all alone in a big fish tank greet you at the door. Pretty affordable, fast service, horrible fluorescent lights.

Let me start by saying that the reviewers who give this DUMP any more than 2 stars do not know anything about Viet food. This place is the absolute worst excuse for Viet/Chinese food I have ever had. And the interior looked like a warehouse. Bare walls. Bad lighting. A large cloudy aquarium with two sorry fish in it. Dirty bathrooms. LETTUCE WRAP. The lettuce wrap had only minced meat and fried noodles -- nothing else, and not served with Hoisin sauce or any sauce. Even worse, the fried noodles were fried in old oil. NOODLE CHICKEN PHO. The bowl of chicken noodles were 100% flavor free. The chicken tasted like it was boiled for a few hours -- chewy mush, zero taste. BOK CHOY WITH MUSHROOMS. Mushrooms were not tender, they need to soak longer before stir frying. CRAB RANGOON. Awful. Sauce was even worse. MIXED BBQ (Char siu pork, chicken, duck). Way oversalted. My tongue burned. Basically, uniformly disgusting food. Why is this place in business? Come on people of Hilo, raise your standards for Gods sake!
(1)Anya E.
Despite mixed reviews, I was enticed to 1 Plus 1 by their noodle soup menu. I love noodle soup and had to try theirs. On each visit, I had the roast duck and charsiu pork min. Their noodle bowl is very basic: Chinese egg noodles, broth, your choice of protein and lettuce. Lettuce? Yes. I had never had noodle soup with lettuce until I came here. You can probably imagine the texture of iceberg lettuce in hot soup: soggy, slimey, and unappetizing. The broth and roast duck are decent. The char siu pork is so-so. I know that iceberg lettuce is cheap, but you can get bok choy or sprouts at the farmer's market for the same price, and it tastes better in soup. After the third time, I decided to stop treating myself to lettuce soup. And while noodle soup is not their strength, I have not tried other menu items. Service is fast but indifferent.
(2)Mike Z.
Yes it's bright, yes the service is slow, yes the food comes out at different times, yes there is a lonely fish in a clouded aquarium, yes the food is mediocre at best, No, I will not be returning
(2)Monika S.
See my review about Lotus Cafe for a San Franciscan's view of eating in Hawaii. Once you get over the location, the drab interior and rather boring fish tank, the food is pretty darn good. OK let me take that back, the spring rolls were HUGE and decent, the lo mein tasty but the hands down winner was the roasted duck. Holy crap, it was cooked to perfection. No restaurant in SF gets that close. The skin was crispy, the meat tender and soft. So so so good. They serve food family style, and we had enough food left over for an entire lunch the next day. Prices are affordable and there is plenty of room for families. They may not be authentic, but coming from the land of Asian Fusion cuisine I cannot criticize them for their non traditional menu.
(3)Eric Robert R.
Still trying to figure out why so many people recommend this place... I mean it's ok, but I've had better for the price. Staff is friendly, but in all honesty I feel I could have had a more satisfying meal elsewhere.
(2)Viet D.
here on vacation, food is ok, atleast it is fresh. But for Taste, Theres something about the style of cooking in hawaii, Is it me or is Salt overused here, every thing seems salty to me. So that was a complete turn off. Old style ingredients aren't found in their ducks. It seems to be a mixure of only salt and barely taste the spices. No traces of Shao xing rice wine. I used to cook for 15 years, The duck taste like salt and micro fraction of 5 spice, which is better than most places found in hilo but not quite authentic, Theres a place in town that i did find, but its a asian supermarket that serves the best, Imean authentic, close to the roast what i grew up eating in china town Dallas. The Richardson area. The Pho here is very salty also. So if your pallet can handle it, Give this place a try.
(2)Phil F.
While not the best place, its also not the worst. Food is good and satisfying. Service is above average for this kind of place. I found the restaurant to be clean and cheerful. I had the lunch special, which was General Tso's Chicken. It wasn't 100% authentic but seasoning was balanced and it wasn't greasy. My friend had honey shrimp. Likewise, not a barnburner but decent for the price. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but if you're shopping at Walmart or the mall next door, this is a good choice for Chinese or Vietnamese food.
(3)Thomas R.
Been here a number of times. Food is decent as far as Hilo food goes. I like the roast chicken and anything with Charsu. Spring rolls are large but make sure to eat them while they are hot. Again, not fantastic but consistent and decent for Hilo standards.
(3)Michelle W.
My rating is for their chow fun noodles, because that's the only thing i've ever ordered. I can't speak for the rest of their food, but their chow fun noodles are AMAZING. They're the best chow fun noodles I've ever had. They have tons of flavor, veggies and meat. When my mom has gone to Hilo for the day on business I have her bring a couple orders back to Oahu... that's how good they are!
(5)Chelsea A.
Fast & friendly service. The food is good!
(4)Jayd K.
Roast duck is always good. Ginger chicken or the roast pork are also tasty. The melon boba and thai tea boba are the good flavors. The french iced coffee is nice and strong! The service can be a little slow, but thats usually when its packed.
(4)Amira J.
Not fancy, but good food. .. Located in a shopping mall... Visiting from Kona side, I'll go back.. Nice staff, great Thai ice tea. ..
(3)Samdooby R.
This place is junk. Been eating here the last 8yrs but most recent visit sealed the deal. Ordered the seafood chow funn and was weird. Noodles were gummy n lacked flavor. LITERALLY 2 shrimp along w/ diced scallop and imitation fish. Also had the choi sum w/ beef and was ridiculously BLAND. Food was served cold, service even colder, lol. BAD food for Hilo. So many other Asian options available, skip this place.

Chinese/Vietnamese style restaurant located in the Waiakea Center Pavilion next to the Walmart. Food here is really delicious!! I ordered their roast pork and duck DOUBLE noodle soup. The broth was so delish, real roasted pork/duck intense flavor with a subtle hint of anise/5spice... Although both proteins tend to run on the fatty side, the essence of the soup was not overwhelmingly oily. The double noodle was overkill though and I had to give some away to everyone else at the table. I ran out of broth and requested for just a wee bit more pls... they were very happy to oblige. A nice cup size broth came out pipping hot, making my meal even more ONO! I'm not a big duck fan, but I really enjoyed the soup. The hubs ordered their grilled beef and chicken w/ onions rice plate; came w/ small side salad drizzled w/ a sweet chili/French dressing to it. Meat was nice and tender. My bro-in-law ordered their ginger/garlic chicken... white boiled tender chicken topped of w/ very palate pleasing and aromatic blend of chopped ginger/garlic and some fresh green onions. Their fresh spring rolls were yummy as well. We came for lunch and it was BUSY even for Hilo on a Thursday late nooner. It's pretty cheap, around 45 bucks for all our meals w/ iced tea and soda... Service is great - friendly, helpful, really really accommodating servers... and they do hustle... they tag-team all the tables. making sure to keep all their customers happy... filling half-filled water glasses and tea cups, and bring requested essential eating utensils/sauces. It's one of the more ONO places to eat in the area, even w/ surrounding competitors in the food court. I know why now... Parking is a BEEOTCH!!!... along side ROSS and Walmart and neighboring restaurants/shops... hungry/irate locals will snatch your spot if you're not paying attention. LOL
(5)Merry H.
This is one of my favourite places to eat in the Hilo area. I am sure their offerings might not be "authentic" - but as for general taste, it works for me. Their General Tsao's chicken doesn't taste like any I have had before...but I get it every time, because what it DOES taste like is....yummy! More like Sweet and Sour chicken. Their special funn noodles are also pretty good. My husband loves the duck and roast pork funn soup. The prices are fine, and service is friendly for the most part. We might have limited options in Hilo...and this one works for me.
(3)Vee L.
The quality is low, the food tasteless. That is all I can say without reminding myself how disgusting I felt after eating there.
(1)Ziad A.
Good place to go with family in the hilo area. Good food, good prices, great service. We've been going there for a while now, and the people know us... its great. Personally i like the fried shrimp, vege fried rice, and the chicken lettuce cups. I have not had a bad experience here, and the people are friendly; and theres almost always a seat... consider yourself recommended... :D
(4)Lani R.
The summer rolls are Huge compared to most places in the Sf/bay area. Great value for your money when it comes to those; the rest of the dishes seemed a bit pricey but I opted to try the chicken lettuce cups which were very simple but tasty, we had to ask for a few extra pieces of lettuce to finish off the dish, but it was enough for two. We also got an order of the crab Rangoon which was a little to rich for me. All in all service was pretty good and I would go back for the summer rolls :)
(3)Ren N.
Friendly atmosphere, big bathrooms and good service. Overall I recommend coming here if all other Vietnamese cuisines closed. That happened to be the case when I was searching for dinner, this place seems to be the only viet food open on a Sunday. Prices are fair but depending on what you order you can get a huge plate of food (ginger chicken) or small tiny portions (garlic shrimp, even the shrimp is small) Had 3-4 dishes came out to be $60 Only last resort would I come back
(4)Michael B.
Decent food, no complaints. Service is non-existent, but friendly enough and I'm usually happy being left alone for the most part. As someone who doesn't eat meat I will say the menu doesn't have many options for vegetarians, but enough that you will have a few choices. Prices are very reasonable, and there are always specials to be had.
(3)Charles F.
Very cheap appetizers and pho. But the noodles, oh no. Not the business. It was ok, it tasted kinda weird and undercooked. The meet was alright also. but kudos to the broth...delish! Service was ok, expect to be served WHEN they want to serve you. It's Hilo, people take their time.
(3)Michele R.
Skip! Wanted Vietnamese tonight and all other Vietnamese restaurants were closed. When the food arrived I asked "who ordered that", because it didn't look like what I normally would order at any other Vietnamese restaurant. Nor did it taste Vietnamese. I took maybe two bites ............... I've never had an experience, where I could not eat my food. But, completely lost my appetite after those two bites. This might be the worst review I've every written. But, all I can think is "yuck. I'll be going to bed hungry.
(1)K A.
food: 7/10 pho tai crab rangoon service: (take-out) 8/10 -came here out of default since i was craving pho and other places closed on sundays
(3)Erynn T.
I've only been here once so it's not like I've tried much, but this review is for their summer rolls & bubble tea. The summer rolls taste fine, but mine weren't wrapped that tightly so they fell apart easily. I muchhh prefer Hilo Rice Noodle & surprisingly, Coqui's Hideaway's summer rolls! The bubble tea here is a nay for me. I got strawberry. It was really watery, liquidy, and the tapioca was super mushy. Hilo Rice Noodle's bubble tea is also better. Bf likes the crispy duck from here though. Overall service is good, seating is good... but there is a sad looking fish tank at the front of the place... ;(
(2)Halei J.
This place serves pretty average asian food, the servers are nice and friendly and it's pretty clean. The menu is I guess a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese. It's right by the Walmart so whenever I"m there, I'll usually pop by here for some grindz.
(3)Brennan T.
This restaurant serves decent Vietnamese-Chinese food, and the service is pretty good. Food is pretty cheap, and generally less than $10 per person. Usually I like the pho here, but one time the broth was very watery. We spoke with the owner about it, but not much was offered in terms of explanation. I do like the fried noodles, and the summer rolls are great too.
(3)Alan O.
Roast duck! A uniquely delicious flavor. I like it best as duck mein with the pho veggies...you know, the basil, Chinese parsley, and bean sprout that you get with the pho bowl. I can feel my tummy smiling every time!
