Matsumoto's has great shave ice!!! It's definitely one of the best that I have had on the island, or anywhere, for that matter - I still have some places to hit though, so it could easily raise up to a 5 star #1 spot for me pending visiting those other "must-do" shave ice places. A lot of the appeal is "the experience." I don't know how or when it came about, but Matsumoto's is like a household name - it's just where you go for shave ice. With that being said, it might be a little overrated - and with being overrated, the wait to get into the door let alone to order can be tedious. There is always a line out the door here! The girls are all pretty nice and they work fast here, despite being under a lot of pressure and having tons of orders to fulfill. Have your order ready when you get to the front of the line. You can pick up to three flavors! My all-time favorite is Lilikoi. Adding ice cream and/or condensed milk really MAKES it for me. For 30 cents extra, get a cup to hold your shave ice in. It's worth it, especially if you don't want to waste even a little tiny bit! I love that there is a flat penny machine in here. I'm a sucker for collecting flat pennies everywhere I go (even if I DO live here...lol). They sell some really adorable shirts - if that is your ideal kind of souvenir, I would recommend checking them out...pretty much all of them are adorable! I'm speaking about the women's shirts, of course...not sure about the guys' selection, lol.

My first experience with the new location. Same fast service but i think they have a new crew. My shave ice was packed to tightly so i had a hard time chipping chunks loose. The syrup guy did a light pour and the middle of my cone was white (and it wasn't from ordering coconut). Maybe after 6 months, they'll improve.

Matsumoto's is definitely a must stop of tourists. You can tell by the long line that wraps around outside of the store. They have a ton of little knickknacks that you can buy from cute little key chains to t-shirts and sweatshirts. They have a bunch of flavors and make sure you mix it up with more than one so you can taste a little bit of everything. I like to get the ice cream at the bottom because it's like finding the hidden treasure once you get to the bottom and it tastes SO good when you mix a little bit of the ice cream with the flavored shave ice.

Tried a bunch of shaved ice on the island. At the infamous matsumoto's, I had the honeydew, yuzu, and lilikoi flavors. Flavors (especially the yuzu) were all quite good, but the ice itself was a little "icy" rather than a nice "shaved" texture. I got the ice cream on the bottom, which was alright.

There aren't very many places that get Hawaiian shaved ice right. Matsumoto's has been our go to shave ice spot on the Island for many years. Lots of flavors over finely shaved ice that melts in your mouth. If the shaved ice wasn't enough they have lots of great souvenirs to make this a must stop when on the Island.

Delicious! The watermelon shave ice was my favorite but mango and pineapple were good too.

I guess we came at the right time because there was virtually no line. I ordered the tropical with condensed milk and the hubs got the Hawaiian with azuki beans and some other stuff added in. The flavors were great and I highly recommend you get a plastic holder for your cone so you don't get snow-cone everywhere. I also bought the cutest little shaved ice necklace at the gift shop. Its adorable.

Shaved iced is definitely not a dessert I would ever crave or think to order, but after my husband mentioned it a few times, we decided to give this place a try. This was our first time having shaved ice and we were in complete shock over the popularity of this spot. It's a tourist attraction on its own! :) They sell everything from hats, t-shirts, mugs etc. How can something so simple turn into such madness?! After waiting in line for quite some time we decided to order a large bowl of shaved ice in 3 flavours, pineapple, passion fruit, lemon so we can really taste what shaved ice is all about. We didn't expect much but we certainly liked it more than we thought we would. We had it on a very hot day so it was very refreshing. The flavours were tasty although we couldn't tell the difference between the pineapple and passion fruit. I agree with some of the others that it would be a lot better if they offered better syrups that are more natural so it's a bit more healthier and flavourful. Still, it was delicious and we certainly enjoyed our first taste of shaved ice. We will definitely be ordering more shaved ice in the future!

Best Shaved Ice in the world.! Tastes like the "snow cones" we had growing up in Ceres, CA. in the '60's. The owner of the "Bulldog Den" had a machine that made the fluffy snow and he made his own syrups. This is the only place I've ever found that comes close.

Have fun in line...I don't care what your guide book says this is the same artificial food coloring as every other shave ice joint and can be had anywhere without the wait. Just my two cents, try going down the road to the Old Sugar Mill and get shave ice that is natural and not fluorescent

MMMMMMMMM! Hit the spot. Everyone on Instagram would take pics of it and I decided to taste it myself. The shaved ice here is really good! Something about makes it different from other shave ice companies. Took a drive to Haleiwa and it was so worth it. Variety of flavors and thank god... There was no line when I got there. I got the rainbow flavored shaved ice with a snow cap in a cone. For some reason, I found it better than Ululani's Shaved Ice on Maui. I like my ice not too soft and not too hard.. This was right in the middle. Drove home with rainbow colored teeth and a picture posted to Instagram! Will update with pictures soon and will definitely come back!

Good shave ice. I had green tea with ice cream beans and condensed milk. He had watermelon with ice cream. Cool shop. Area had a small town feel. Made me feel like I was home in a less tourist area. Line was long but the staff made it go by fast. There is a post to take pics next to only problem is it is located next to a smelly trash, Tip. There isn't much of a side walk or sit space outside. You pay for everything even a bowl or plastic to hold your paper cup in, not to mention with what the shave ice costs plus the cost of the plastics or the bowl I would think we get a regular spoon and not the wooden thing they had out on the old ice cream trucks, Good visit good shaved ice good experience. Can use some updating on spoons and move the picture post away from smelly trash and flies

Uh HELLO! I hope if you're within a 10-mi radius of this place that you make a stop here. This place is classic CLASSIC hawaii. (Note: two classics for extra emphasis) And I know people would argue that Waiola does a better shave ice but I just can't agree in good conscience. What sets Matsumoto's apart from the rest is the syrup flavors. They are all classic options but I feel like they taste different here. I swear it's not all in my head! When I come I always opt for the Hawaiian rainbow with ice cream. Mmm. Drooling just thinking about it. The other thing that is great about Matsumoto's is that they have different variations of the rainbow shave ice. Rainbow: strawberry, lemon, pineapple. Hawaiian (my fave): pineapple, coconut, banana. Matsumoto's: lemon, pineapple, banana. Tropical: guava, lilikoi, papaya. The line is sometimes long, sometimes epic and pretty much oscillates between those two states throughout the day. But the turnover is super fast and the shave ice is 100% worth it. When driving there, watch out for pedestrians as the area is crawling with tourists and locals alike. Parking is generally available. There is a lot next door that is able to accommodate all customers.. at least every time I've been there. :)

A must! When you visit Oahu! I've had shaved ice a few times but it's not like shaved ice from the states. This small shaved ice/shop uses condensed milk to their goodness and I have to say it is the best idea ever! When you arrive, there may be a bit of a wait. Both times I went, there was always a long line that is regardless, def. Worth the wait. When you get to the front you have choices of Flavors and how you want your icy treat. I went with the standard strawberry and mango. Great combo!! They also give a good portion for the price so it is well worth it. Google this place and try it out! The best treat after a day of lounging n the beach or excursion!

Wouldn't kill them to smile while they took your order, would it? The group of young people operating the store on a Tuesday afternoon were more interested in themselves than serving customers. 3 stars because they actually got my order right despite constantly conversing with one another, never looking me in the eye or greeting me.

Love this place... Not only is it good but not over priced. Yummy shaved ice and cute souvenirs in a cute shopping area.

Just as great as we remembered BUT they've moved! Well not really moved moved. Same block and all, just the enterence is on the side with some front space.

Yup, a hella line like usual but nothing to bat a lash at b/c they are efficient shave ice making machines. Get as many flavors as you want and be sure to get it w/ ice cream. A true HI staple.

I'm gonna tell you, I really didn't know what the craze about Hawai'in shaved ice was until I came to Hawaii and tried several different places. It's hot and humid, so something yummy and cold is the perfect way to cool your body down. I stopped at different locations and I will not bother talking about how they didn't match up to this place, but what I will tell you is that this place was the real deal. From Waikiki, Matsumotos is probably about a 45 minute drive with no traffic in the North Shore area. Parking is available for free at a parking lot across the street in the cemetary/church grounds. There are lines at this place for a reason, it's the best tasting shaved ice around, trust me, I know, I sampled 6 other places and none of them compared, they were good, but Matsumotos was the best. Also, these guys are just making shaved ice, the line goes by quickly. When you get up to the front, they will ask you if you want this plastic cone protector thingie for an additional .30 cents..... say yes unless you want the shaved ice dripping down onto your hands, plus it gives you more time to enjoy it instead of scarfing it down cause it's melting from the outside temps. I loved this place, shaved ice was the best, employees were friendly and I look forward to going back to Hawaii and stopping here again.

The last name that put shave ice on the map! You know this place is popular when Matsumoto souvenirs--tshirts, key chains, stickers--adorn their entire store. I bought in for getting a penny pressed with the Matsumoto shave ice logo. This is a must stop for travelers venturing to the North Shore. Their shave ice is velvety smooth (not hard ice), homemade syrups, and generous ice cream fillings. I always gravitate to more natural fruit flavors like guava, mango, passion fruit, pineapple. All delicious. Be like a local and order it with ice cream in the middle. I like the tail end of the dessert when the ice is slightly melting and I mix it with the ice cream for a creamy ending. The shop is hard to miss--tons of tourists either waiting in line or enjoying their shave ice in front of the store.

Best shaved ice! Read some reviews that were bad, and was disappointed but still wanted to try. Good thing, because it was nothing like the bad reviews, 5 stars Easy

  • Ranada R.

I used to love coming here for shaved ice, but now it's a tourist trap! The shaved ice is still as good as I remembered, but there are other places on the island that are just as good. If you go be prepared for the long lines.

I've got to take away a star (I was on the fence when I originally made it four...) I went back for one more before I go home tonight... Was very good, previous review covers that... The exterior of this place is disgusting and it seems inexcusable to me that the owners don't at least TIDY UP a bit and ACT somehow. The smell of garbage is overwhelming and the ground is vile and sticky. You're constantly surrounded by flies, and have to dance around and swat at them EVERY SECOND to keep them off your legs and your lovely SHAVE ICE! This situation is not beyond the control of the owners, and that irritates me. Countless people patronize them for their lovely ice balls (and by the way the stretch of street is lined with competitors that are empty while Matsumoto is packed) and they are content to allow the exterior (where you must go to eat your ice ball) to be ghastly. A few industrial garbage bins that aren't overflowing constantly (which attracts the flies) a yard or two of concrete out front and a few small table / chair sets would do wonders for your CUSTOMERS but for now we will continue to eat our ice balls standing in muddy gravel soaked with dropped syrup and standing water next to overflowing garbage cans and the smell of hot garbage. (Cause you can't get snow cones TO GO.) (I've been here five times and will definitely be back on my next visit but this is nasty and worth mentioning. Their SHAVE ICE is still delightful!)

Like Giovanni's , Mastsumoto's is a must try if you are on the North shore. The taste was on par for most of the shaved ice places. I got the ichiban special which had the edible container, mochi and also a straw + spoon. It was quite delicious and I liked that they had seating all around as well.

  • Darin C.

If there is an "institution" in the North Shore area, this is certainly it. This is the most famous shave ice place in Hawaii, and therefore, probably the world. Is it the best shave ice place in the world, well, of course, that is debatable. A pleasant surprise is the addition of a large parking lot, the downside is that it makes for even longer lines. The line is almost unbelievable, but since it took so long to get up there, it is just something you have to put up with.

Best Shaved ICE ever! I've had so many in different states and this is by the best one. Plus the service is great! The line speaks for itself. Be prepared to wait.

The shaved ice at Matsumoto is all main land people suggest when you tell them you are going to Oahu. On my last vacation I didn't try it but on this one, I said I was for sure. I can see why it's a fave but I am assuming that people have never tried other shaved ice on the island because this place is over rated. Although it's not over priced and they give you more than other locations, it's definitely not as good and the service is horrible and rude. When I ordered mine they asked me of a I needed a holder? I said no because I didn't know what it was but they didn't offer to explain. Yeah... get one!!! My shaved ice was all over the ground. Pissed me off! The ice is crunchier and not as soft as island snow in kailua, the ice in Kailua, never collapsed like this one did and it was very disappointing. Next vacation, island snow wins & gets my money, plus they are nicer and not as packed!!

I'm in love with this place. The snowcones are amazing and the little trinkets are not expensive. Their new location is bigger, and although the line is always long, it goes by very fast. The flavors are amazing, they don't just taste like sugar. Plus, it's very inexpensive. We always stop by when we are in the area. We just love it.

  • Tiffany C.

Love that they have a great variety of flavor. They even have Yuzu, which is probably one of my all time favorite flavorings. I got the green tea special that came topped with condensed milk, red bean, ice cream and mochi. Their mochis are great! However there are plenty of other places in hawaii with finer shaved ice that you don't need to wait in line for.

  • Licia L.

Whenever I'm in Haleiwa I stop by here. It's a must. There's usually a line from the moment they open til the time they close but it usually goes pretty quick. If you're in Haleiwa make sure you stop here!

  • Nancy N.

Matsumoto Shaved Ice is usually the dessert spot everybody goes to after getting Giovanni's Shrimp. Perfect for a hot day and they have over 40 flavors to choose from!!! Usually you can pick a max of 3 flavors. Don't forget to add condensed milk!! It makes a difference. Parking lot is across the street. I'd just eat my shaved ice back at the car because there are no seating inside the store. However, there are benches along the store outside.

made a trip up to north shore to try the shaved ice here. I wanted to compare the ice to waiola. matsumoto's is a fun place to go to. they have a system that helps get you our ice fast. The worker was good and quick with offering suggestions, the rainbow and the hawaiian. I liked the hawaiian better. There are places to sit and eat the ice and whats funny is in the back there are tons of wild chickens running around. they like to eat the ice that falls to the ground. On to the ice. the ice is a little diffferent to waiola. The ice here is a little more crunchy and not like "snow ice". I like the snow ice better but the syrup and flavor here was more tasty I think. Its a far trip for shaved ice but if you are in the area might as well check it out i think.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT - BUT THEY DID ANYWAY 2 1/2 stars for the new store. The new store is quite disappointing. Its updated and brand spanning new, but it's lost it's old time authenticity. You can't tell the difference between this store and the other new surrounding boutique stores. The old ordering system where there was one station to take the size and flavor first and then another where you paid- was quick and helped expedite the process so although the lines were out the door, it was moving. For some reason they decided to change that to the traditional order, pay, wait all in one location. The line was painfully slow and the fact that there was no A/C in the store made it worse. Now for the clincher- the don't serve the shave ice in paper cones anymore. They use these edible boats which are very shallow in depth and can't even support ice cream and shave ice on top. It is now side by side. So as your ice cream and shave ice quickly melts it almost overflows- you gotta suck 'em up fast. And forget about the kids holding that thing- they will make a mess. I tried taking a bite out of it, and it really has no flavor and doesn't go with shave ice.

It's difficult to pass up the sweet, creamy, decadent allure of condensed milk, but I'm hard-wired to love this stuff; the fond childhood memories of stirring thick ribbons into champorado (chocolate rice pudding) spurs me to order any menu item containing it. Stopping at Matsumoto's for shave ice is the thing to do on the north shore, as evidenced by the line that snakes the sidewalk. I ordered a small lilikoi, coconut cream, cherry with ice cream & a drizzle of condensed milk (called a "snow cap!") The flavored syrup really clings to the smooth ice, never once did the fast-melting dessert get watered down. The dairy products really add deliciousness to shave ice, so don't be a fool -- get it or fail to experience the magic that is Matsumoto's. Also, pay the extra $.30 for a plastic cone holder, you won't need as many napkins.

    (4)
  • E T.

Cool... but overrated. I guess I don't care for Shaved Iced as much as other people. A small shaved iced is $2.50 but it is huge for me. I got the Tropical Flavor! Pretty colorful. Good refreshment for a typical humid day in Hawaii.

Everyone and their mom's who have been to Hawaii will tell you to make sure you stop by Matsumoto's for the best shave ice on the island. It was definitely hyped up for me and honestly, their shave ice let me down. The line was super long when we went. Parking was somewhat of a challenge to find, but we ended up parking a block away near a couple stores. Once you get in past the doors, you can select the flavors you want, sizes, and toppings. I can't believe they charged extra for a holder that supports your cone or whatever. We never got one and we never spilled at all, it's just weird how they would charge more for this extra. I ordered mango lychee to compare it to my order at Waiola's, and it wasn't as satisfying at all. The ice was still a bit stiff and not as soft. It was also a bit watery and lacked flavor. While in line I saw someone go back in to ask for more syrup on his ice since it was watered down. They don't give you spoons to eat with, but rather wooden stick spoons. Overall, my experience here was not fun. Definitely a fan of Waiola's compared to Matsumoto's. Maybe if I'm really craving one on the north shore, I'll come by again, but other than that I can resist. Make sure to come before closing because they will deny you entry even if you arrive a few minutes after closing. If you can't finish you shave ice fast enough before it melts, you should consider paying the extra .30 cent plastic cup they have.

A must stop on my trips to Oahu. I can't believe I have never reviewed this place. Located inside a market is a hidden gem. I love their shaved ice. What sets them apart is their delicious red beans and vanilla ice cream. My favorite is their green tea special which consist of green tea syrup, red beans, vanilla ice cream, mochi rice balls and condensed milk. Simply heavenly. The portion is large enough for two people to share. The green tea syrup has a really strong green tea flavor. The red beans are super tasty. The best way to eat it is a little bit of the shaved ice, red bean and ice cream. It is a little tricky since they give you those wooden flat ice cream spoons and a straw to slurp up the goodness when it starts to melt. There is currently construction so what was once their parking area is gone. If you go down the side street they have an area blocked off for you to park. They take credit card. They sell cute tees and sweatshirts. I am a loyal fan representing them when I am in LA. Make sure to stop here if you are in the North Shore area.

I've never understood The Hawaiian obsession with Shaved Ice. It's basically a snow cone on steroids and not nearly as satisfying as other desserts. I guess if you're going to have one and your on the North Shore Matsumoto's is the place to do it, but it's more for nostalgia than anything. I would definitely recommend adding ice cream and beans, it may seem weird but at least makes it memorable. This is hardly a grocery store as the name suggests, mostly souvenirs and t shirts. As you quickly notice if you've been to Hawaii a couple times, "Same stuff just a different store", however they do have Matsumoto shirts if that's what you're looking for. Haleiwa did a nice job improving the courtyard area and adding some additional shopping choices around Matsumoto's. You no longer have to eat your shaved ice in the parking lot:)

  • Don N.

If you've ever had Ululani's in Maui, this pales in comparison. The ice melts way to quickly despite being really chunky (not fine and tasty like it is at Ululani's). We had bookmarked this Matsumotos, looked forward to visiting, and even went out off or way to visit. After waiting in a super long line and having it hyped up by folks around us, most who were visiting for the first time, we were very disappointed. Didn't even finish. It made the tourist Matsymoto branded swag that we purchased for my brother in law less special.

Let me start by saying I am not a big sweet eater so you can take my review however you like, but I'm giving it! lol I recently went here while visiting Hawaii North Shore. The place is small and the line was out the door, I was intrigued. When we got in close enough to view what the options were we could see that there was a lot of ways to customize your shaved ice. You could add condensed milk, beans, a scoop of ice cream in the middle and mix & match flavors. We opted for banana cream, coconut cream and lilikoi with condensed milk and a scoop of ice cream in the middle. I liked the flavor that the condensed milk gave and the scoop of ice cream in the middle was good, but I just didn't think that the flavors of the syrups were all that great, I took a few bites and was done, it really was nothing special. My husband who is a big sugar/ice cream guy didn't think much of it either. Also, when we were there they were giving out free pressed waffle platters that your shaved ice could be served in, but they were super bitter. We all got one (and there were 12 of us all together) & we all agreed that the pressed waffle cone plate itself was awful. I think they might have been giving them away for free simply to get rid of them and not offer them anymore? Maybe if you are a big shaved ice fan this place will do it for you, but I was not impressed. :(

At the end of a long day driving around and tasting North Shore food places, we made a stop at Matsumoto's. Matsumoto is famous for their shave ice. There are definitely better shave ice options on the island, but Matsumoto serves up a decent cone. The syrup is good. I liked the orange flavor a lot. The ice was alright - definitely edible and well packed, but on the coarse side. The mochi balls were pretty disappointing. They were generously sized, but didn't have any flavor at all. One of my friends got the green tea special, which comes with a whole lot of toppings and an edible dish. The dish was kinda stale, but it was a cool idea. Overall, not a terrible choice if you really need some shave ice. Just don't order the mochi.

Not as good Waiola but its up there! Lines were much longer here too compared to Waiola.

One of my favorite spots for shave ice. I stopped by here last week and lucked out with NO line! I did a combo shave ice with cherry, lime and raspberry. Man, it was so good! I really wish they would open one in Orange County!

  • Layla M.

Really yummy flavors... I got the Guava, Watermelon, & Green Tea Shaved Ice with the Ice Cream on the bottom... Yum! My only issue is that the syrup went to the bottom & the only flavor I was tasting was Green Tea... My advice on this is to get the additional plastic cup underneath & then pour the flavors back on the top of the ice... The ice cream turns into a float mixture & some portions were still scoopable... Yum! The line looks long, but this operation is a fine tuned machine... They get you in & out quickly! Yay!!!

  • Jennifer C.

There is always a long line, when we pass by so we decided to try it out. As expected it was amazing, super yummy! I got the Strawberry cream, pina colada and watermelon, with ice cream and condensed milk, it was def. worth the wait.

  • Elysse P.

Shave ice was good... I was in love with the GREEN TEA SPECIAL. So flavorful, but not too sweet. The combination on the green tea syrup with the condensed milk, red bean, ice cream, and those damn PERFECT mochi balls. To die for. My bestfriend couldn't stop talking about them. This is definitely a MUST!

    (5)
  • Amanda K.

The line isn't too bad, as it moves fast. I love green tea so tried the Green Tea special based on these reviews. Did not like the mochi balls or red beans.. Just not my cup of tea. The ice cream, shaved ice and condensed milk was great though. I would get it in another flavor next time. Also the portion is huge.

I don't understand the line for this place. The shave ice is good, not the best but good. But waiting in a line for an hour for something that you can get better down the street? I don't understand that. I did the tourist thing once and waited in that crazy line. And it took all the enjoyment out of the experience. I would much rather get shave ice after a 5 minute line or less and go sit on a quiet bench then be herded like cattle through a line for an hour and then get manhandled in the shop and then have to go sit and eat it in my car because there is nowhere to sit. Once was enough. I go to Aloha General Store and get better tasting shave ice, faster and have a nice place to sit and eat it without the chaos.

The very famous Matsumoto Shave Ice... This place is delicious! The staff work very fast because they always have such a long line. The place has changed since I came here last year. There are more stores surrounding the area. The shave ice is still the same. Delicious and satisfying like always. This time I got the piña colada and guava with ice cream and condensed milk. I always recommend getting condensed milk, but you should also get the ice cream. It's vanilla and Matsumoto's tastes really good! If you come here, which you should, always prepare for a line, but it doesn't take too long. And, don't forget to buy some of their cute apparel!

  • Luis R.

Parking - Horrible Line - Usually long but goes pretty quick Flavor - A good shave ice is all about the way it's shaved and the syrup used and this place has both good quality ice and syrup. If you never been off the island this is what the texture of snow is like when you eat it. Price - Cheap $2.50 for a small which is enough for me. Overall I am a fan of this place. Minus 1 star for difficult parking and lengthy lines.

We always stay on the North Shore when we visit Oahu. If we happen to pass by Matsumoto and there is no crazy long line, we stop. We have been quite disappointed with the shave ice lately and this last visit really convinced us not to return in the future. First of all, the ice is not as fine as it has been in the past. The syrups just taste different. Really artificial. Seriously, I asked for pineapple and it was blue! Can't get any more artificial than that. Finally, the middle was practically white ice with no syrup. My all time favorite shave ice place is on Maui, Ululani's. Their policy is that if you find a white spot, bring it back and they will fix it. BTW, never a white spot. Wish they would open one up on Oahu! The prices are still very reasonable at Matsumoto. But the quality has definitely deteriorated. Sadly, Aoki is no longer around so we need to find a replacement shave ice place. If you do go, take your shave ice and have it in your car. Sitting on a bench, next to the port-a-potty, is not a very pleasant experience. :)

Giant tourist trap. If you want to find this place, just look for the long line that occasionally wraps around the building. All in all, it is a store with some overprized tourist souvenirs primarily known for their Hawaiian shaved ice. I will say this tough, it is my favorite shaved ice on the island. Very fine shave, with excellent flavors (avoid the strawberry, it tastes like soap), and especially delicious addition of ice cream. If you want to top it off with condensed milk you can add some change to it but I think it's worth it. At the very least add ice cream; that melted shaved ice flavor with the soft milky ice cream is a good touch when you get to the bottom. I would get the cone holder if it is a particularly hot day or you are just a slow eater...it will melt faster than the polar ice caps in global warming. If you find yourself in Haleiwa and have approximately 30 minutes to kill (depending on the line), it is worth it to get a traditional Hawaiian treat.

I did not really care for the taste of this shaved ice, but then again I was visiting from St. Louis. I think people just want to take a pic and upload it to Facebook or Instagram!

Didn't even realize we were driving past this place on the north side until I saw a line of people outside the store. It's not really a grocery store because all they sell is shaved ice and t-shirts supporting their business. The line is long but moves fast.. you can sit outside on benches near the lawn if you want to eat it. I am not a fan of neon artificial flavors so we got the two specials.. green tea special and the azumi special (I can't remember what it is called but there are only two). Pretty good.. both of them. Oh and the bowl it is in.. it's a cone so you should eat it. There is parking across the street in the church if you need to park. The price is also pretty cheap... definitely won't break the bank. But their t-shirts.. a bit of a rip off.

I'm not sure what the huge deal is now, in 2015, but we did it. Stood in line, got yummy shave ice, ate it. Years back it was different. It felt 'real'. Now if you want an authentic, 'off the tourist beaten path' feeling of stopping at a roadside shave ice stand, head somewhere else. I will say if you have a large group that includes elderly or strollers, there are good bathrooms and easy parking there (if you can find a space!)

Great shave ice on the North Shore. There was a long line, but we were served pretty quickly. All the standard options. Well made shave ice, decent pricing. They sell t-shirts and other souvenirs. Obviously for tourists, but it's still good shave ice.

After reading all the rave reviews and seeing it on TV, we finally visited Oahu and decided we HAD to try Matsumoto's! We were a bit wary about parking given the reviews, but we found one instantly on a side street. There's plenty of parking surrounding the place, you just have to be smart about it and look out! The line was long, about 20 people or so in front of us but it moved very quickly. Before we knew it we had the famous shave ice in our hands admiring the glistening mound of ice. It was very nice, I got a large shave ice with strawberry, honey dew melon, banana cream and condensed milk. It was a lot better than I had expected!!! It was just overwhelming. I was eating it rather slow and before I knew it a lot of the ice had melted, the flavors mixed together and was a watery mess. So eat it quickly or order a small! Was it worth the travel? Yeah, I'd say so especially since it was our first time trying Hawaiian shave ice. Not sure if I'd be itching to come back next time, I'd probably venture out and try some different ones!

I had heard about this place for months before our trip to Oahu. I went with really high expectations, and I was a bit disappointed. It was no better than the shave ice I get in the desert of Utah. Sure, it was good, but it wasn't anything worth raving about. Their line was huge but fortunately moved fast. Also, we had heard repeatedly to get the azuki beans. After trying it, I have no idea why that was recommended? Who likes what tastes like black brand in their shave ice, clogging the straw and messing with the wonderful creamsicle flavor ths should exist at the bottom of shave ice? I would eat here again, but I won't go out of my way.

Having heard great things from others and the reviews on yelp, I made it a point to stop at Matsumotos this trip. We got the small Matsumoto with ice cream. We got lucky and the line was short so we were able to enjoy our refreshing shaved ice in about 10 min. The ice was soft, the syrup wasn't too sweet and went well with the vanilla ice cream, but overall I didn't live up to the hype. It was tasty, but I probably wouldn't wait in a super long line for it.

  • Nata R.

Very disappointed. Not as good as it used to be. Syrup ran right away to the bottom, ice is not as fine. Used to be our favorite place. Sad to see it become touristy spot with expensive stores and bad shave ice. Try Uncle's Clay for variety of toppings or Shimazu for fine ice.

One local boy here to tell you all... Matsumotos is NOT worth the wait! Save your sunshine and go to Aoki's! I am born and raised in the area. All the tour buses come to Matsumotos, but that's because of longstanding CONTRACTS I reckon. So the lines are RIDICULOUS. Who comes to Hawaii / the North Shore to WASTE their life away in a line? Aoki's (which was once just around the corner and in an old buidling which was torn down for Kamehameha School's new eye sore fake historical shopping mall) is now just across and they do a GREAT job. When I see people with Matsumoto shirts I laugh because I know they are either tourists or TRYING SO HARD to be local//kama'aina. Well guess what? If you want to be kama'aina, you have to start eating your shave ice at Aoki's. We have always gone there since I was a kid, after paddling and football practice, just whenever... Matsumoto's is SO not worth the line.

This is an awesome place to get shaved ice!!! My partner and I headed to the north shore a few times noticing long lines at this establishment. It was somewhat discouraging waiting outside with the sun beating on your face and shoulders. That was not the case when we went. Hoorah we literally walked inside and had three people in front of us putting their order to the cashier. I looked up at the menu and wondered how small was the small. Shall I be a glutton today and order the large I thought? Hmmm ok I'll get the small. There was just so many choices of flavors that it took a while for me to decide. I then finally said a small with pineapple, likoli, and coconut cream with icecream and condensed milk. That is a mouthful lol. I walked down the countered I watched my ice being created. Oh it's like god touched these flavors and it was being slowly doused into my cup. I excitedly took my dessert and took a huge spoonful and closed my eyes. Ahhh it was wonderful. That condensed milk is just heaven. The ice-cream was mixed in at the end and let me just say that small is HUGE! Loved every last bit! I sort of wish I had one now....

Last time I've been here was before the renovation. Where it was just matsumoto's shave ice and the gravel parking lot. Now I love their new set up instore. The way the line moves and how they order is so much more convenient, organized, and fast. The line doesn't run into the street anymore! I ordered the vanilla/ strawberry with ice cream shave ice. LOVED it except there were still some random chunks of ice in it and not every part was flavored but still ono! Also my son's first time and he absolutely loved it!

Based on even the less impressed reviews, I think I must have gotten some badly made ice. It was seriously just a small step up from eating a snow cone, the ice was so hard and packed. In part because of that, the plastic holder is basically necessary if you don't want to spill everywhere, so I do advise everyone to pony up the extra change for it. Flavors were okay. I got watermelon, coconut, and guava. Honestly they kinda melded together, it was hard to tell what was what. The coconut was particularly confusing as I'm pretty sure it was light pink in color? That or they just barely gave me any coconut flavoring. My friends ordered other more naturally colorful flavors that made it easier to tell what they were eating. But we were all pretty unimpressed and very grateful this wasn't the first shave ice we tried in Hawaii, otherwise we might never have known how good it can get! Not worthy of the hype.

Heaven in a bowl! Make sure you get it fully loaded (w ice cream, condensed milk and sweet beans). The small is huge and the large will be the size of your head.

Shave Ice: This was my second time here as the first was more than three years ago. This time, I tried the guava, lilikoi, and papaya. It was delicious, definitely better than the shave ice I've had in Califorrnia. Ultimately, I don't think any shave ice places can beat the Ululani's Shave Ice in Maui. However, this was pretty good and it has a plethora of diverse flavors to my liking. Service: I was dropped off to wait in this long line and before I knew it, I was in the front already (12 minutes). Least to say, even though the line was lengthy, it moved pretty swiftly. As you approach the front, you order from a worker and she/he gives you a cup. Then, when you are at the cashier, you hand your cup to whoever is in in front and then your order gets made for you. Great teamwork, I must conclude. Parking: Street parking.

I'm so happy that they've turned the shack into a real location. There are so many choices that you should try to make a decision before you get in line and not get stuck when the server asks you what you want. The kids were on such a sugar rush and couldn't stop eating it even with it dripping all over the place so even if you don't have kids i really would suggest bringing some wet naps.

For the shave ice...AMAZING! (If you know what to get.) Make sure you get it with ice cream, beans, and sweetened condensed milk! It was fabulous! My mouth waters just thinking about it. If the line is out the door, don't worry. It goes really fast and it's totally worth it! It's also nice if live music is going on out in the courtyard so you can sit and relax while eating. The mochi balls were a little much. Bigger than normal and not very good tasting.

Matsumoto Grocery Store is in a small town in North Shore. My daughter and I parked in a dirt lot and walked across to stand in a long line. Green tea special was $5. I paid and received a number. I waited around for my number to be called. It was a few minutes wait. My shaved ice was decorated with anko beans, vanilla ice cream and green tea mix. The shaved ice wasn't the kind that tasted like it was overloaded with sugar. It tasted rather natural with perfect amount of sweetener.

I can't believe I'm giving this place 3 stars, but I really don't think I could rate it any higher :( I bought a tanktop, just because everyone in Cali has one. Then I stood in line (luckily, it was short) and ordered a pineapple-mango-strawberry shaved ice. All it is, is syrup and ice. Same as any other shaved ice place. I don't like being a Debbie Downer but I don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I waited in a huge line for this place!! I was told that it was worth the wait and it was! I got the azuki special with ice cream on the side. Worth the wait!

Went to Haleiwa to try this famous shave ice place. We didn't know there's now a parking space behind the stores so we parked at the alley across from this place. The line went all the way outside. Good because while you wait in line, you can check out their menu and think of what you want to order. I love the Azuki special! I love these Asian kine shave ice that's why.

I don't know why this place is so special. It must be the super cheap price of $2.5 for a shave ice. We came here since everyone was raving about it. I ordered a small lychee shave ice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The shave ice was just ok to me. It was good on a hot day. After a while, all of the syrup ran to the bottom of the cup, so I was drinking the lychee liquid. We ended up tossing the rest.

  • M K.

Yes the lines are long but they move. Actual wait time is no longer than 10 minutes tops as the new location is designed for high efficiency shave ice ordering. The one star off is for the shaved ice. As someone born and raised in hawaii, I remember the ice being a slightly finer shave. It still tastes good and the flavor lists has grown. Tip: Get the snow cap (condensed milk drizzle) for only 50 cents more. It's the way the locals eat it.

I waited months to try Matsumoto Shaved ice as soon as I read about it in a magazine! Not a bad deal either. $3.50 for three flavors with vanilla ice cream inside which adds the perfect touch to the delicious tropical flavors. The store itself was going through some renovations but I'm sure they will be back at 100% soon. Stanley (the owner) was mingling amongst the crowd hanging out right outside the store front. He's just a regular guy! Very approachable and seems to smile pretty often. Great job Stanley!

Overhyped? I mean it's pretty good, but I thought Waiola had the better ice texture by far. Matsumoto's yuzu flavor syrup was good, as was their matcha with red bean special, but the "cone" that the matcha special comes on had the taste and texture of cardboard.

You gotta go!! Iconic Matsumoto shave ice is a must when visiting Oahu on the north shore. It's been a staple to the island and has been around forever. Don't be surprised when you see the line-up crawling outside the door from inside to the back of the store. Just think of it as time well spent as to what you want on your shave ice to make it just yours. We were lucky enough to run into the owner, Mr. Matsumoto, and take a picture with him when we were there! Had a chat with him, he asked where we were from, etc. Really nice and down to earth guy. They have tons of flavors and flavor combinations to choose from. Would definitely come back when I'm back in Oahu!

As Rice-a-Roni is to San Francisco, Matsumoto's is to the North Shore. Well, maybe that's not quite accurate. Haven't been here for a few years and, upon a friend's advice, I found that things changed for the better. The family paved and developed their former parking lot to add a nice paved driveway that leads to a spacious parking lot. No longer is there a mass of vehicles (especially tour buses) blocking traffic waiting for an open space. After visiting two basking Honu's, we chose a trip here over Dole's Plantation. Turning at the first driveway after the store, we quickly found a space. As my friends wandered to the newly built Whaler store, I briskly walked to the shave ice store and joined ten or eleven thirsty souls in line. About ten minutes later, I reached the counter and ordered this ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ), guava, lilikoi, and pineapple. After a short wait, my friends joined me in walking to the courtyard area and quenched our craving and thirst. Flavors were good though the ice was more coarse than Taiwanese and Waiola's versions. This remains a community staple and kudos for the remodel. Will be back and won't be the only one!

Authentic Hawaiian shaved ice? Hell yeah! I'm not the biggest shaved ice person but I have to say that this stuff is gooood. Apparently many others think alike, so expect the line to be loooong. Queue management is Starbucks-like, so someone is taking your order while you wait in line and prepares the cup already. You'll then pay and receive your cup of shaved ice within a minute. The flavor is hit-and-miss, my coconut was a bit too artificial for my taste but pineapple and strawberry were really good. If you walk around the corner there's a plaza with some seating. Make your way through the Japanese tourist crowds and you'll find it :)

If you're in the North Shore, then this is the most well known shaved ice spot. We went on Saturday, so the line was pretty long. But the closer you get a person comes out and gives you a menu. And once you get through the door you place your order. Then you pay. Then watch your creation being made. Lastly, get handed a bowl full of yumminess! Everyone was very nice and willing to answer your questions (since I didn't know what the misore flavor was, which is like sugar water). You get plenty for the price! I got the three flavors (piña colada, coconut cream, and melona) with condensed milk and my boyfriend got the three flavors (lychee, li hing mu, and coconut cream) and ice cream. There are so many flavors and combos!

This place is definitely worth the hype!! Plenty of parking if you get there before 11AM but because of the popularity the place will always be packed with people. The shaved ice is worth the wait! Don't let the lines discourage you because they have a system down to make it one of the best experiences when on vacation. There are other little stores around the area and places to eat and a 5 min drive to the beach! There are two sizes (S at $3.75 and L at $4.00) with your choice of up to 3 flavors of syrup. Add ons, like vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, azuki beans, and mochi. You get a fairly large amount of shave ice and I love how they offer and large variety of flavored syrups. The shave ice isn't chunky at all (hooray!) and the line, which is usually long and out the door, moves at a decent pace. Their newly remodeled setup offers Matsumoto souvenirs such as tee shirts and magnets, as well, but that's just a little bonus if you're looking for that kind of stuff. Shave ice is simply flavored ice, and this place does it well.

The line can get out out of the door, but TRUST... It's worth the wait!! Make sure to get the shave ice w/ ice cream. It'll taste that much better.

Went to Hawaii on a mission! Traveling to North Shore for Giovanni's and Matsumoto were definitely on the list! Take my advice, it's a trip worth taking for these two places out here. After reading and hearing so much about this place, my friend and I had to stop by on our way back from North Shore. Offering various delicious and unique flavors to choose from with insanely cheap prices, this shaved ice spot will win you over! Add this place to your list and definitely stop by if your visiting Honolulu!

If you're on the north shore & craving some shave ice, then you HAVE TO visit Matsumoto's, especially if you haven't been there before! Some of my friends like to joke that people just like to stand in lines, even when they don't know what they're standing in line for because if the line is long, it must be for something awesome. So the shave ice from Matusmoto's isn't amazingly mind-blowingly awesome, but as someone who's grown up on O'ahu, it is kind of an institution and it brings back a lot of great memories! Parking & The Line: There used to be a lot right next to the building that ppl parked in, but they're now doing construction there for new shops. Parking, at the moment, either has to happen at the church grounds across the street or in a parking lot further into Haleiwa. Once you've parked, you'll have to wait. The line isn't always long, but sometimes it can get ridiculous, especially on a hot weekend day. On the bright side, as long as it looks, it tends to move pretty quickly, so just be a little patient. Ordering & Eating: While you're in line, you should have time to figure out which of the multitudes of flavored syrups you'll be adding to your shave ice! I always liked how many choices they have at Matsumotos---from the tradish rainbow (vanilla, lemon, strawberry) to green tea, lilikoi, watermelon and all that fun stuff to a few sugar-free flavors for the less sweet loving folk. If you're one of those indecisive people, then they have a few suggested combo flavors like the Rainbow, the Hawaiian, etc that are a set of three flavors that they know work well together. In addition to the syrup flavors, you also have to decide on a few other things. You can add extra stuff like a scoop of ice cream or azuki beans at the bottom or pouring condensed milk on the top. You half to pick a shave ice size (and a cone or bowl), and if you're getting a cone, you may or may not need a plastic holder. Suggestions: If you're a newb at shave ice, I suggest getting one of the pre-set flavor combos w/ ice cream & condensed milk in a holder. It'll save you decision making time, it'll taste great, and it won't end up on the ground when you're trying to figure out how to eat it. They sell other stuff? Yes, yes they do. Although, I don't know that anyone ever really buys any of the other stuff. I guess it's there mostly for tourists? Hats, tank tops, shirts, shot glasses, mugs, magnets, kitschy "local" items, etc are all up for sale in addition to the shave ice. If anything, I think using the penny smasher is cool, and a fun souvenir.

Green Tea Special - $5.00 - Green tea syrup with vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, adzuki beans and mochi balls! YUM!!! Always loved coming to this place as a kid. This is definitely a staple in North Shore. You can't NOT get shave ice when you come to the north shore! This is an old mom/pops store setting. There are lots of youngin's working here now but it's pretty organized for an out the door line. First you stand in the loooooooooooooong line, then you give your order to the first guy, he writes it on the bowl/cone... and then you take your bowl/cone to the counter and wallah! Your shave ice is made to order! There's not much standing room inside of the store and its recommended you eat it outside anyway. Inside the store they also carry souvenirs and nick-nacks for purchase. I demolished my shave ice. It's also nice meeting the tourist standing in the long line. They always ask what the adzuki beans are..... guess it's not so popular in the mainland but hey.... they always end up getting it and loving it.

My sister and I came 5 minutes before they closed and luckily we were the last ones they brought inside to serve. There was a line but it seemed to go by fairly quick. I asked the gal taking orders what get recommendation was and she mentioned the lilikoi and guava with ice cream at the bottom and that's what I went with. Hindsight I wish I got the condensed milk or the azuki combo. I didn't order the 30cent plastic cone that goes around your sno cone. I highly recommend if you are taking your goodies to go as huge chunks will fall to the ground as you dig in without the plastic funnel come but it's your call. Like the lady recommended, the 2 flavors were slightly tangy and tarty but unique flavors. The green tea combo my sister got was delicious. The flavors and azuki beans with condensed milk and mochi balls? Yum. The mochi wasn't sweet at all but it went well with the other sugars of the bowl so it was a great combo. Overall I'm glad I got to check out this hot spot on my visit here.

Their new location (which is right behind their old storefront) is great! At first when we drove by and saw the store all boarded up, my heart dropped. There was no way Matsumoto had closed! But I realized that the area looked very different than the last time I was there. A paved parking lot?! Woohoo! Amazingly efficient, options are easy to read, and merch everywhere. I got the small tropical flavor combo (mango, guava, papaya) with ice cream on the bottom. DELICIOUS. also picked up a hello kitty Matsumoto shirt because I can't resist the cuteness. The shave ice comes in bowls now, no need to pay extra for the plastic sleeve! You can still order the paper cone, I did see a few people with it (...but why?).

I'm not really a shave ice fan, but the shave ice here was good nonetheless. I got a large with papaya, coconut, and guava with condense milk. The condense milk really adds to it; it makes everything more creamy; more ice cream like. Towards the end, it gets really sweet and syrupy so I tossed it. I'm happy to have tried it, but I don't see myself craving it.

  • Kelly N.

The line is always long but the wait is about 35 minutes or so. I got the azuki special with li hing mui flavor. It's really refreshing for a hot day in Hawaii. The asuki beans were a bit sweet but it balanced well with the mochi balls. The ice cream was perfect. The waffle cone was a bit of a disappointment. It's texture was similar to a cardboard.

Brave the long line - it moves so fast. I was skeptical because it reminded me of a snowcone, but went anyhow because the boyfriend swore by it. Anyway.. we came back the next morning because I wanted another! :D I highly recommend you put condensed milk. Try to get flavors that compliment each other and you won't be disappointed. Come with no high expectations and you will be so delighted.. I got banana cream, strawberry cream, and vanilla the first time. The second time, I took out vanilla and get melona. Both times, so great!

After viewing the sea turtles on Laniakea Beach, we headed to Matsumoto Grocery Store for their infamous shaved ice. The last time I was here was about 15 years ago, when it was just the grocery store. Now the grocery store is part of a nice little shopping complex that includes a Whaler General Store and an open courtyard in the center. After parking in the large lot in the back, we made our way through the complex to the grocery store. With a line that snaked out to the front of the store, the wait was about 10 minutes to place the order and a few more minutes to pick up the order. But during the wait, you can check out the list of 40 flavors where you can choose 3 for your shaved ice or you can select one of their original combinations. You can choose from small or large and add ice cream and/or beans. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/m-ma… ) ( yelp.com/biz_photos/m-ma… ) Overwhelmed with the choices, I opted for a large Hawaiian combination, which consisted of pineapple, coconut and banana. The flavors were intense and the shaved iced provided a nice cool refreshing treat for a warm day. While in Haleiwa, Matsumoto's is a must stop for a refreshing treat. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/m-ma… )

Even better the second time around. I ordered the Matsumoto for me and the Tropical for my grandparents. My grandparents loved it especially the mochi, I'm glad because it was their first time. Things have changed since the first time I came. The lineup is different and the store looks like it had a slight makeover or they just basically moved some things around. Best part of all, there's no more funky smell! The shaved ice is still delicious and well worth the half hour wait.

To end my North Shore tour, we ended at Matsumoto. The lines are pretty long, but bearable. The flavors are delicious and once you order, everything goes by quick. I'm glad they have a lot of seats available in this plaza. I do like how they have a small store inside to get small cheap souvenirs also. Glad we got to stop by here!

Nice stop to try out an item that is on every quintessential Hawaii experience list. Glad we checked this place out on a weekday because the line was only about 5 people deep. When I drove by on a Sunday, there were about 20 people in line outside of the entrance door alone. The workers were pretty efficient in getting me my shaved ice. Honestly, all shaved ice tastes the same to me which is why I was happy to get some beans in mine. Beans! A foreign concept to me but it helped to cut the sweetness, which I really dug.

I used to come here every time I'd visit the island. My family loves it and I love it. However, this last trip I took (after four years), I was extremely disappointed to not see the line along the road, right under the famous rectangular sign. Instead, it turns out that the whole place was restructured and Matsumoto's is now inside the shopping square. Without a sign! Of course, with the lines still being long, you'd figure it was the new Matsumoto's but the welcoming feeling that was expected was just not there. The place was brand new and tidy, but the customer service was not very happy/smiley. The appeal was just very disappointing for a big fan like me. Especially when I'm used to standing in the gravel parking lot, eating my melting ice with a big satisfied grin on my face. The portions were a lot smaller and there were no cool looking flower cups! Taste wise though, it was still better than a lot of other places I'd go to. My boyfriend was very satisfied with the green-tea special and the prices were cheaper than I had expected.

This place is so tiny! While there, there was two bus loads of Japanese Tourists and long lines. I got their Tropical Shaved Ice (Gauva, Lilikoi, & Papaya) but unfortunately, I couldn't taste anything except sugar..:( They also have really cool T-shirts as souvenirs, but I didn't get to buy any, unfortunately. My bf did get me some cool bracelets. Not so great shaved ice, but it's a must visit spot on your way to north shore.

Matsumoto's is surprisingly unremarkable from the outside. It would've been easy to drive by and miss it if it hadn't been for the line of people crowded outside. There's a dirt lot right across the street for parking, but you can find spots on the street as well. The shaved ice is so cheap! No wonder this place is so popular. You can order up to 3 different flavor combinations per shaved ice, and ice cream/azuki beans are extra. We ordered the Green Tea special which was super yummy!! The green tea syrup was not super sweet (but we got light syrup) and it came with condensed milk, vanilla ice cream, akuki beans, and mochi balls for $5! Comparatively, it was more expensive than the regular shaved ice but it came with all the extra add-ons. The line moves pretty fast. A girl took our order in the middle of the line and gave us a bowl with our order written on it which we took to the front of the line and the cashier rang us up. There were lots of cool gifts/clothing for purchase as well! They're pretty expensive, ($15-$25 per shirt) but it's okay because living in Hawaii is expensive. I actually kind of regret not buying a t-shirt I had been eyeing because now I won't be back for a while. All in all - go visit Mastumoto's! I know I'll definitely be back the next time I'm on Oahu.

So the two reasons we drove this far north: 1) Banzai Pipeline, and 2) shave ice from Matsumoto. Two sizes available, with up to three flavors of syrup. Add ons, like ice cream/condensed milk (which are standard at most shave ice places) as well as red beans, are available. Ice cream is vanilla only. Lines are loooong, but fairly efficient. My biggest concern is the syrup: unlike most shave ice places who pride themselves on their handmade syrups, Matsumoto chooses the artificial, factory made syrups you normally associate with bad snow cones. The gallon jugs of blue pineapple, yellow coconut, and pink banana (wtf?) flavorings are kept where you can see them, so this is no secret. Worse yet, like bad snow cones, the syrups goes right through the ice to the bottom of the cup, leaving you holding unflavored ice and a pool of mixed chemical flavorings. The place is living on borrowed time, and there is no question that quality shave ice places (I'm lookin' at you, JoJo's!) who make their own syrups from actual foods found on earth will eventually win the long race. For those new to the Hawaiian treat shave ice, this place will certainly be adequate. That being said, I cannot recommend this place for anyone who has actually tried good shave ice...it's just not meeting the standard any more. Great t shirts though!

For a line that is pretty long their normal shaved ice is not worth it. The shaved ice still had a course crunchy texture compared to other hawaiian shaved ice I've had like ululanis and waiola (which is so smooth and melts in your mouth). They messed up on 2 of our 3 orders including flavors we didn't order or forgetting a flavor (we ordered mango, pineapple, and got a blue colored flavor in our shaved ice. Azuki bowl was a really good combo though and taste was enjoyable.

Shave Ice!!! Long quick line. Service is nice and quick. Takes credit card. Free parking across the street. Normal lot was under construction when I came. Small with Ice Cream - $3.25 - Ice was not clumpy. It was nice and smooth. I got Lychee, Green Tea, and Yuzu. All the flavors tasted like they were supposed too. Only issue was that the ice cream was on the bottom and so difficult to get to. The ice cream is just plain vanilla, nothing special. I just picked up the ice flavors. I did not like it the first time I came in 2010 but I really enjoyed it when I came back.

Even when the line is huge, it seems to move pretty quickly. It's definitely worth the time you wait. My favorite so far has been the tropical flavor with ice cream and condensed milk on top. The small size is actually pretty big, and my two little ones share it just fine. Prices are great too! Can't beat a stop here for shave ice when you're on the North Shore.

Good shave ice. A friend asked if it's worth the wait. Not if the wait's more than 5 minutes. Really, it's just shave ice. No line, go and enjoy. Line? Walk away and find another place.

I went here a few years ago and admittedly had a hard time finding it on my last trip. Things have certainly changed since my last visit and the store has grown quite a bit. In case you too get lost, just look for long line out the door. You will not have trouble finding shaved ice in Hawaii and maybe they are not the best. I don't know. However, the prices are good and the line is fast. Shaved ice is now ruined for me if it doesn't come with sweet red beans and vanilla ice cream. They also have a great selection of souvenirs. My thought is, if you are already in Haleiwa, you might as well give it a try. Don't let a line scare you. You know you wanna...

I am giving my review of this tourist hotspot because not only did my grandpa established this business more than 50 yrs ago, but my uncle and aunty has been keeping the store in business since my grandparents passed away and a large variety of tourists and locals come to visit the store and try the shave ice everyday. Owning a business these days in the recent years has not been easy to upkeep. In fact, the Aoki's shave ice shop had to close down due the redevelopment of Haleiwa town. Only some of the shops including the store are able to stay in the same location. Aoki's has a stand right across that sells acai bowls. Anyhow, the shave ice has always been fine since my grandpa found the appropriate shave ice makers to create that fine shave ice taste. That should be standard of shave ice anywhere. The prices are reasonable compared to little sweet crack seed shops. The store also has two specials that you can get for $5 each, asuki special and green tea special, both with asuki beans and ice cream in a waffle bowl you can indulge in. And it is so worth the price. For all those haters who prefer Waiola, I don't think shave ice should be placed in that regular drinking cup. The cone cup is the best with the holder so you don't make a mess. I feel like that drinking cup, you can make a mess easily. Plus the syrups at Matsumoto's doesn't taste like artificial flavors. The owners make their own syrup FYI :P The parking for the customers has gotten much better. They don't need to park on the side of the streets and at the church across. There is plenty of parking spots behind the store. There is space for the tourist buses too :) As I saw, you have to park on the street for Waiola's and store is a hole in the wall place. Matsumoto's has plenty of merchandises from t-shirts to coffee mugs to stickers to hats and bags. If you are having trouble finding the right size, ask the workers, they can help you out. They can recommend the popular designs and of course the flavors. There is also the new collaboration t shirt that Sanrio Hello Kitty and my uncle and aunty did a couple months ago. They have children and junior sizes in a variety of colors: pink, blue, green, purple, yellow and gray. Check it out when you visiting the store :) To end my review, I'm not telling you to go Matsumoto's because I'm related. I'm asking you to give the store a try and then after you try the shave ice and bought some merchandise, you can criticize the store. REMEMBER THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW MOM AND POP OWNED BUSINESSES ON THE WEST SIDE OF OAHU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taste the rainbow~ with ice cream and such!! What's to love about Matsumoto??! Everything! The lines, the rainbow, the ice cream surprise inside your ice!!! Hmmmmm....Even those colorful tshirts that they sell. I've been here way too many times to complain about the lines. The trick to avoid the line is come during the week instead of the weekends. You might be shock how fast it could be to get to that colorful ice when there's no line!! Try many combos, get the beans! Get the ice cream! Just indulge! And parking is plenty across the street, on the road or even in that little church parking! Happy icing!

This is a review for the newly renovated Matsumoto's, yay~ First of all, I'm actually really sad about the renovation. Matsumoto's was just... Matsumoto's, you know? Part of its significance was that it was a longstanding landmark and it just isn't the same. Don't get me wrong, the inside is actually very hip and waaay updated. It looks great. I love it. But it isn't the same vibe and the nostalgia is gone. The good thing about the change, however, is that the line seems to move more efficiently. Before, you'd have to wait on the side for a bit til they called your order, but now, by the time we were finished paying and walking over to the pick up counter, our order was ready. Now, I used to think Matsumoto's was the best shave ice ever, until I went to maui and had Ulalani's (the ice is WAY softer!). The thing that Matsumoto's does amazingly though is their syrups. They are not the same stuff you can get at the grocery store, trust me. The flavors are amazingly accurate and I love the sour li hing mui, lemon, lilikoi, guava, and green apple. Depending on what you get, the syrups may be too sweet or less accurate but as for me, since I like tangy things, I get tangy syrups. As for the ice itself, the shaved ice particles are fairly small and delicate and I think that they are the softest you can get on the island. The soft quality of the ice here is particularly why Matumoto's was so popular in the first place. (I didn't think ice could get shaved more finely than it is here, but as I mentioned earlier, I discovered it can :P). Yes, btw! There is a difference! At other venues, the ice particles may be larger and harder, causing you to have to crunch through your shaved ice or hold it in your mouth til it melts. The problem with larger ice particles is also that it does not hold syrups well. Since I was a little girl, my family had one of those Japanese shave ice makers where you freeze a cylinder of ice, put it in the compartment and then rotate the handle to shave it. Our shaved ice was always crunchy and our syrups always just kinda ran to the bottom with it continuing to slowly drain from the top. When I had matsumoto's for the first time, I was surprised. I didn't think you could get flavored syrups to stay within the ice but they do. This is where the hype is for me: very fine ice, amazing flavors, syrups stay within the ice. Lastly, the prices are amazing. I am so glad they are not overpricing for a bunch of ice and flavor because the affordability it part of what makes this place so awesome. A note for anyone judging Matsumoto's against those "Snow" places: Shave Ice in Hawaii is not the same as Snow and it is not the same as other treats that use shaved ice in it. I noticed a Yelper whose poor review of Matsumoto's seems to be based on the fact that it is not what it is supposed to be--in other words, it doesn't have all those toppings that the snow places have and it isn't one of those cultural desserts. The thing is, shaved ice itself is used in a variety of ways and is even used in different cultural treats for example the ice bowl you get at Sweet Home Cafe which comes with a bunch of jellies and boba and coffee pudding. If you truly do eat a lot of shave ice and you are from Hawaii, you would know that the term "Shave Ice" is most commonly used for the local treat that is a cup of shaved ice with flavored syrup. --It is NOT flavored water. Our Hawaii style of shave Ice is so popular, it has become one of those "trademark" symbols of Hawaii (and local artist John J. Murakami uses shave ice very often in his artwork). It always bothers me when reviews are completely based on something that the item was not meant to be. I do respect reviews that are based on satisfaction, and I understand satisfaction can be based on the fact that you discovered a menu item wasn't what you thought it was, but I appreciate when people can be open-minded and consider the fact that maybe the issue is with their own assumptions. Why blame the venue for your own lack of insight? Matsumoto's does Hawaii Style Shave Ice. That is what one should be reviewing it as. And the beans are called "Azuki" beans... not Azuka...

Best shaved ice everrr! And I'm from California and we do have alot of good food, good desserts here, shaved Ice included but this place is bomb. Ice is so thin and the flavors are so goood. The ice wasn't hard and as weird as it sounds, it really does melt in your mouth. I had the mango and pineapple flavors with vanilla ice cream and mochi. So, so good! It was the best shaved ice place I went to when I was in oahu. If anything, my only regret is not coming back here before leaving hawaii. It was raining and people were still in line, myself included (stood in the rain without an umbrella btw), that just shows you how legit this place is.

This review will NOT be for the shave ice! I came here to purchase t-shirts. I was gonna turn around but lucky someone said you don't need to wait in that long line. Whew. It's a cute store but I really love the old store betters that store felt like North Shore. This store feels like so modern and hip. It's to new and not the island feel. Too touristy but I guess so that's how they make their business. The place is crazy busy. But the one moves, the staff works fast if you want shave iced but if you want to just get some items just head into the store and check it out. That's where we went to the right side. Some clothes outside and more inside. The cost of a t-shirt is hella expensive, even the kids size t-shirt. I actually got a check in deal where if you spend $60 you get a mug. Which is cool cause for 3 t-shirts I spent $60. The little old lady was nice who helped me. Parking is crazy here. But it is a bigger parking lot.

Serious hype here but the Shaved Ice is very good. If you are driving through it's a must stop. But only if the wait line is reasonable. Closes early though.

New look but same great taste! The old gravel parking lot is now a grassy courtyard area to all the new shops and Matsumoto customers. There is now a legit parking lot in the back area but now you are competing with people going for the other shops in the area, it can get crowded. There are so many flavors to choose from, but you have to try the Melona! It's the best and you will be so glad you tried it. Don't forget to add the ice cream, mochi balls and condensed milk to enhance your shave ice experience!

Probably the most popular shaved ice spot on Oahu. There is always a line but it moves pretty fast. I waited about 25ish minutes in line...and ended up getting a large with strawberry, lychee, and li hing. The small and large size are only 25 cents different so why not just get a large? :D Anyway, they do have add ons like condensed milk, beans, mochi, etc but I stuck to just simple plain flavored shaved ice. All the flavors were really good!! Not too sweet. The ice isn't chunky at all but I do wish it was a tiny bit fluffier. All in all, best shaved ice I've had but I would love to try some other shaved ice places on the island to better compare.

For someone who's had a lot of shave ice, I really feel like this place is overrated. The line was super long on the Saturday we went - we waited for about half an hour. The shave ice store also sells a lot of different souvenir, so that was really cool. The shave ice itself - it's almost like Rita's water ice with a hint of Asian twist with Azuka beans (red beans). The flavors are just flavored water drizzled on top of the shave ice. Too sweet for my taste, and very artificial. I usually prefer sweetening my shave ice with condensed sweet milk and actual toppings like fruits, pudding, and tapioca pearls... Matsumoto's was just not what I expected, and not very good.

They've remodeled this area and it looks amazing! The store is much cleaner and the lines snakes around the inside where you could take a look at all the merchandise. PARKING: There's a lot in the back that usually has spots. Parking in this part of Haleiwa is always a little difficult. If you're eating lunch somewhere else, park there in that lot and walk over to Matsumoto's afterwards to avoid trying to find parking a little closer. WAIT: Depends on when you get there but the line moves pretty fast! Since they've remodeled, they have a new system now. Time passes by pretty fast since now there's plenty to look at. You will be enticed by all the little knick knacks you can purchase here. Did somebody say souvenirs? ORDERING: Right when you reach the person at the door, you will be asked what size you want (they'll try to persuade you to get a large) and what flavors you'd like. Usually get up to 2 or 3 and they will write these flavors on your bowl! Then the line wraps around and you get to the cashier where you give them your bowl with all the details and pay (if you decide to add some more flavors on, the cashier can add it on for you). Your bowl then get passed to all the stations and you end up with an awesome bowl of shaved ice! Price is decent for the amount of shaved ice you get and the flavors are always delicious! My personal favorites are melona & li hing. If you get a chance, try Matsumoto's and Waiola's and see which one you like!

Shaved ice Hawaiian style comes with a scoop of ice cream, shaved ice then your choice of syrupy flavors. The Tropical is scrumptious with condensed milk. The line moves fast, it gives you time to think about the perfect flavor combo and to get hot and thirsty. The staff is upbeat and fun and do make sure your order is right!

I admit it. I'm a terrible local. My little town bubble rarely expands towards the north shore. If it weren't for my annual family reunions in the area, I would N.E.V.E.R ever make it out there. Since my family took a year off last summer, it's been a while since I've made the trek up north. So when we drove by the new complex, boy was I surprised. It is amazing. It's what Haleiwa should look like. I loooove the quad feeling with the shops on the perimeter. It helps keep the line contained and customers in a safe place and it's much better than when it used to spill onto the sidewalk/street. The one thing I was really impressed with is how incredibly efficient they are. You get to the front and the guy is standing there with two different sized bowls and a sharpie. He takes your order and scribbles his sanskrit on your bowl. I kid, it isn't that cryptic. You get to the register and hand over your money and your bowl. From there, the Ford assembly line springs into action. The first guy builds the foundation-ice cream, shaven ice...whatever you ordered. He hands it to the next dude and so on and so forth until the two busy bees at the end grab your two flavors and like synchronized swimmers soak your ice with sweet syrup. This is all done behind a glass so you can watch your sugary snack come to life. I was kind of shocked that the two shave ice sizes are SO BIG! It didn't feel like small and large, it felt like large and jumbo! However, they are both still priced very reasonably. That line can feel like the Matterhorn line on a busy summer Disney day but thanks to Mr. Henry Ford, the assembly line makes it move at unprecedented speeds. I loved my strawberry cream and watermelon. They both were true to form and I was in heaven.

There is a solid reason why the lines are out the door! This place is the bomb!!! Matsumoto was highly recommended by our local Hawaiian friend. We came here on a Monday and the line was long, but they are pretty efficient at moving the line along with several staff mandating each station. The shop is in a small plaza (private parking lot). They have a whalers beside them too! I ordered the special with matcha green tea shaved ice, fresh mochi balls, red bean, condensed milk and vanilla icecream to top it off! Everything was so good about this combination. The perfect combination for my liking. You can also eat the waffle bowl as well, but I would recommend against that because it taste and looks like cardboard? My friends had Lilikoi, watermelon, yuzu, cantaloupe. All were solid flavours. The watermelon and Lilikoi were the most refreshing out of this combo. Will definitely come back here! Very reasonable prices and great shaved ice :) they have also many different types of souvenirs too!

Not worth the hype in my opinion... Decided to try Matsumoto's since it's considered one of the best shaved ice places on the island. The line was long & I wasn't impressed with the shaved ice once I got it. The syrup ran to the bottom quickly & left me with some ice parts with no flavor. At least I can say I've tried it, but I wouldn't come back for another.

One of the best shaved ice I have everrrr had!!! I got strawberry with coconut it was a yummy combination! It was also so good with the side of mochi and condense milk (leche), I highly reccomend adding that with your order or even a scoop of ICE CREAM!!! SO good! I can't wait to come back to HI just for this. Although on a busy day parking is super hard to find and the line gets pretty long!!! But it is soooo worth the wait I promise!

Heard from locals about this shaved ice place that's popular and most talked about in North Shore. However I thought it was way too hyped up. It was good but didn't WOW me. You can choose different syrup flavors from a nice selection, add beans, ice cream, mochi, and other toppings. The ice was finely shaved and melts fairly quickly so had to try to scarf it down but I just couldn't finish it. The prices are fair, got my strawberry guava passionfruit with condensed milk for around $3 and the portion is a good size for what you pay. So in my opinion not worth the drive to North Shore unless you're around the area as I feel there are lots of other shaved ice joints to try. Plus, the line is ridiculously long.

They are popular for their shave ice. Many many tourists stop by. There are other retailers in the same plaza. They share the same parking lot. The service is very slow. Long line........ They should have more cashiers and staffs behind the counter to prepare the orders. They also sell other merchandise in the store. It is a small store and with all the merchandise and people waiting in line, gets very crowded! There are benches in the courtyard.

yum yummm!! This review is strictly for the shaved ice! The shaved ice here was to die for! xD How to order: 1. Pick your size (small or large) 2. Pick your flavors (up to 3 different flavors) 3. Pick your toppings, and if you want ice cream on the bottom. 4. Follow your bowl as if goes through a line of workers who make your order, and at the end of the line, you'll have your perfect shaved ice waiting for you! This place has about 20-25 different flavors! I tried the lychee, mango, and guava on mine, and these three tasted great together! The lychee had a particularly strong flavor. For your toppings, I definitely recommend ice cream and condensed milk on top! These two together with the shaved ice makes it super creamy and yummy! Matsumoto's also has a few signature combinations of flavors that they recommend. This place is also a small grocery store, but I'd steer away from it. Everything is super touristy, and the store was super HOT inside, and I feel like all the candy and stuff they sell would've melted a bit. We got the Li-hing watermelon gummies, and all the sugar that should've been coating the candy had melted.

Good shaved ice but don't go all the way to the north shore for it exclusively. Sizes are large and flavors are good - I thought the banana in mine overpowered my other flavors a bit and my wife felt like her strawberry was fairly bland but loved piña colada and orange. Cute little store, and don't worry about the ultra long lines- they move quickly!

Shaved Ice with Lines Down the Block Shaved ice is the Hawaiian dessert of choice. There are hundreds of places that offer it. For almost 10 days every time we passed this place, the lines were down the block. Even though there were other places selling shaved ice, this was the only place that was crowded. We finally found a time with a shorter line so we made a bee line. Maybe we are just not fond of sugary syrups on top of ice, but, really, we just couldn't see the attraction. We ordered a few different varieties that included the beans and the ice cream. Our selections were good, but we would never stand in line. They tasted like snow cones from a county fair. Oh well, it was an Hawaiian experience.

"The smooth peanut butter of shaved ice" Worth the bragging rights just to know you've been one of the millions who love and cherish this place and have for decades! This old corner store has become a holy grail in north shore, the shaved ice is fine and melts in your mouth unlike some chunky shaved ice. Try one! It's perfect on any day! Rain hail or shine!

I've heard so much about this place and was glad I finally got to try it. It is a great dessert in the hummid hot weather. My boyfriend and I shared a small with ice cream and condensed milk. I am glad we shared a small because it was a bit much for me.

Things have changed since I last visited Matsumoto's 10+ years ago: the shop has been modernized, the area developed, and parking spaces are now more plentiful. However, two things that haven't changed since my list visit were 1) the long lines and 2) the delicious (and cheap) shave ice served here! Don't be intimidated by the long line as it moves relatively quickly; the friendly staff definitely has an efficient system down. As you move forward, a staff member will write your order on the bottom of a styrofoam bowl. You will take this bowl to the cash register, where you will pay. Then, the bowl will be passed from employee to employee as they shave the ice and add the flavors. I decided to order the tropical combination (guava, lilikoi, and papaya) because if you're in a tropical paradise, you might as well order the tropical flavors. Nevermind my secret guava addiction. Anyways, the large order of shave ice (only $2.75!) is plenty for two people. The flavors were, as expected, syrupy sweet, which may be a problem if you're pre-diabetic, but since I am not, I enjoyed the syrup to the last drop. (They do have sugar-free flavors, but, uh, I'll take the real thing.) I assume others found the syrups too sweet, as there were a number of partially eaten bowls in the trash can. There were noticeable distinctions between each flavor, and I found the papaya to be the most distinct. Matsumoto's is an institution, and if you're on the North Shore, you definitely should make a visit!

It's been a while since I've been to Matsumoto's..........all I have to say is, the place just gets better, & better! I was taking some of my ohana (who were visiting from the bay area) around the island yesterday, when we decided to stop by at Matsumoto's. Gone is the dirt road parking lot that use to be adjacent to the little shop. Now it is a beautiful paved parking lot in the back of the store, as well as a lot of new business store fronts in the area. I was a bit taken back, as I did not see all of the modernized improvements come up, so I was totally unaware of it. Rest a sure, the shave ice is still a hot seller (even on a cold rainy day like yesterday)! I picked up a few small "Rainbow" shave ice with ice cream on the bottom ($3.25). The shave ice is nicely shaved thin, and they sure know how to properly pour the syrup on the shave ice, so when you get to the bottom of the cup, there is still syrup! I was at another shave ice place recently where they had scrimped on the syrup, so when I got to the bottom of the cup, there was only ice (I just hate that!). Although the line was super long & out the door yesterday, the staff at Matsumoto's sure knows how to crank out the shave ice! They have a very smooth ordering system where they take your order ahead of time, then write down the items you want in your shave ice - (azuki beans, ice cream, condense milk, mochi balls) & give you the shave ice cup (small or large). When you get to the counter, they will fill your order, and all you have to do is just tell them what flavors to pour on your shave ice. The staff at Matsumoto's work like a well oiled machine.........very efficient, and fast!

Matsumoto's got this down like a well-oiled machine. While the lines are long, the workers there shave it down (ha, ha) quite fast. They are all very customer-friendly and really do try to get extra things done for customers if needed, while keeping up with the pace of the line. This typical shave ice establishment combines the fine snow-like quality of ice with simple syrups of various flavors. I had a go at the guava, lilikoi, and papaya, also known as the Tropical, and they were all very good. I got my cone with ice cream, which they placed at the bottom. I thought this was strange until I realized that as the ice was melting and the syrup slithering its way down the cone, the ice cream began to mesh deliciously with the shave ice flavors, which I could drink via straw. I also got to try the adzuki beans + ice cream combination, and was pleasantly surprised to find both add-ons going well with the tropical flavors. The way they structured the cones were just smart, a level up from the other shave ice places that usulaly just place everything, including the ice cream, in a bowl on top of the shave ice. At $4 for a large cone with ice cream and adzuki bean, I find this a good value for a dessert or snack. Parking looks like it can get a bit hairy on days where the line gets ridiculous, but there are people leaving as fast as people are coming in. The worst thing that can happen is actually the traffic on the one-way lane to this store. Would highly recommend to friends and tourists alike. Would also come again myself.

North Shore is such a special place to me because it's one of the areas in Hawaii that still feels Hawaiian. Not the commercialized Hawaii like the vibe I get from Waikiki, but the old native Hawaii like you get from Halaiewa town. One of the main attractions being Matsumoto. I've been a fan lately of the newest modern version of shave ice being the ice cream + ice fusion like you can get at snow factory, but nothing beats the old school traditional shave ice at Matsumoto. The snow is soft, flavors are vivid and cravings fulfilled. There's always a line and trust me, it's justifiable. I usually opt for the Hawaiian type flavors like Li-hing, guava and coconut. I always add condensed milk, ice cream and azuki beans. These toppings are the must-haves...especially the condensed milk and ice cream. It seems so simple and yet, the flavors combined are so delicious. Perfect on a hot day right after the beach. Service is always prompt and friendly as well! :)

Best shave ice on the planet! Be sure to take a selfie with Mr Matsumoto, he's super nice!

I got a small with green tea, honeydew, and lychee, with condensed milk topping. All flavors were excellent - green tea was my favorite, and the lychee tasted like real lychee. Parking is tricky, and the line can get quite long, but they are very efficient at keeping the line moving. They bring out menus to distribute through the line so you can make a decision before you get to the counter, and then once you order, assembly is quick! Very delicious, would definitely reccommend.

We were wanting to test out the best places on the 3 islands we visited. Up first was this place on Oahu. The prices were really good, line was really long, but moved quickly. Pretty smooth ice texture. Mine was really good (white cake, strawberry, coconut with ice cream and snow cap). My 18 yo boys flavors were not as good. It melted very fast. This was a really good place, but not the winner of the 3 islands (I did spend less than $10 for 3).

Good shaved ice but definitely not mind blowing. It's a good place to go to if you are nearby. The lines can get pretty long but it seems that they have a pretty efficient process to take orders. I was in and out within 10-15 minutes given the line was out the door. I had the Hawaiian combination (pineapple, coconut, banana) which was good and I highly recommend adding ice cream to your shaved ice. It makes a big difference.

As we were cruising around the island saying bye to the Island, one of our stops was North Shore and of course we had to pay a visit to Matsumoto for some shaved ice. We arrived here on a Friday afternoon and the line was surprisingly not too bad. Ambiance: Parking: The plaza now has a private lot in the back that is much bigger! The days of pulling to the side of the street are pretty much over. There is also parking across the store as well. Seating: Seating is moreover outside. Whether you wait or just want to eat outside, it's a nice plaza for you to people watch. Feels: Very touristy-esque like, I feel like most of the people there are visitors. I don't recall anyone really buying anything else. Other than that, it was all positive vibes. Food: Matsumoto Special A sweet flavor with multiple local flavors. If you are a tourist and you're not a fan of sour I would definitely recommend this. Green Tea Special Once again, another sweet tooth favorite of mine. The boba balls were huge and the best surprise was that even the carrier was edible. A good solid to balance that sweetness! Customer Service: I am impressed with the workers working here because of the fact it's a tourist attraction and they attract pretty much hundreds of customers per day. Our service was positive and received our order at a timely matter. Overall: 4 stars. This is from my experience of just the shave ice. Other stuff such as the grocery store...I can't really rate but it's a good place to get souvenirs or last minute beach supplies. Overall my experience has been great ranging from food, price, and parking. Till next time, Matsumoto! Tips: * Don't forget to tip the workers! Serving all those tourists must be a lot of work! * If the line is too long, there's another shaved ice place down the street.

Long is long pretty much all day long. The wait is worth it. Don't expect mind-blowing shave ice just because you drove 1 hour from Waikiki, it's great quality and the flavor selection is unrivaled but come with no expectations and you will enjoy what you just put in your mouth. This location is like your busy neighborhood Starbucks: you will get a "Hello", "Thank You", and a quality product. Tips for the Haoles such as myself: -Add condensed milk and ice cream. -Keep your flavor profiles consistent. Don't be mixing Sour Green Apple, Li Hing, and Green Tea and expect it to be amazing. -Don't bother with sugar-free options. You're on vacation and this is Hawaii--leave your Whole Foods Gluten-Free lifestyle at home. -Don't expect to find anywhere to sit, benches are limited. -If someone passes you a laminated menu while waiting in line, gloss it over and pass it to the people behind you. Do not use it as a fan or sun shade or spank your naughty children with it. -Don't expect amazing customer service just because you saw this place on TV. You have to understand that they are busy 99% of the time and probably do not have time, opportunity, or desire to provide great service. They pride themselves with quality shave ice. -The New Haleiwa Store Fronts has a parking lot behind it, but can be a challenge. Use the restroom here (it's located in the same shopping area). It's clean and open to the public.

I heard about Matsumoto's many many years ago and ever since, it has been on my bucket list to try their famous shave ice. My husband and I took a day trip out to North Shore (1 hour drive from Waikiki) and this was one of our stops. We shared their large shave ice with melona, coconut, and strawberry flavors (you can choose up to 3). We got vanilla ice cream on bottom, condensed milk on top, and paid 30 cents extra for the plastic cone holder so that the ice doesn't get all over us and the floor. Be warned, do not just get a cone! It's pretty messy and difficult to eat it if it's just on a cone! Either get it in a cup or get that plastic cone holder! Overall, we really enjoyed the shave ice! We sat outside on their bench next to other tourists as we all took photos of our shave ice quickly before they melted, and devoured the shave ice within minutes. I think I prefer Waiola Shave Ice though in terms of texture since their shave ice is softer and more finely ground. Matsumoto's shave ice is soft too but has a little bit more of an icier texture. I'm sure some may prefer that though, so it's really up to personal preference. Flavorwise though, the two are pretty much the same! Both winners and amazing! Shave ice is a MUST-TRY in Hawaii! Get it at either Matsumoto's in North Shore or Waiola near Waikiki if you can, but I'm pretty sure it would be great at any shave ice store! :) Parking: Free in private lot across the street.

First time to try this well known shaved ice spot during our trip to Hawaii. The price was really good for how big the portion of the shaved ice was ($3-4). Also you have the option to customize your order with up to 3 flavors and other items such as condensed milk, red bean, mochi, etc. The overall taste was good. We also ended up getting the ice cream with the shaved ice, which made this dessert that much better. There was a little bit of a wait in line, but it wasn't horrible. The only thing I would change was I wished that the shaved ice was a little finer and not as grainy (just a personal preference). We also tried shaved ice at Pearl Harbor during our trip and I definitely liked the texture of the shaved ice there better. Overall, good shaved ice, but NOT the best! Also just a tip that parking is scarce. There is no designated parking lot, but you can find parking in the neighborhoods around the area.

Right after Giovannis, we walked here for dessert. The place is tiny and the line is usually out the door. There is plenty of seating outside where people sit and enjoy their shaved ice. Flavors are endless to choose from and the service is pretty fast. We ordered the large bowl with ice cream, guava, pineapple, and li hing mui, and condensed milk to top it off. Guava was the best flavor out of the three. The ice cream just made it even more better. Large was a good size for 2. They sell merchandise inside the store. Come early and you won't have to wait too long.

Matsumotos has always been a favorite of ours as a family. Especially after a fun day at the beach, or bringing guests from the mainland. You have to bring them to the "WorldFamous" shave ice place. And for years it's lived up to the hype. Now granted for years it's operated out of an older establishment and the wait time was SUPER LOOOOOOOONG!! But, it was always worth it! Fast forward to today, it's been a little bit since we've been there and I know they've made quite a few changed to the area, now I'm not against the change, and it is more open for guest, so I was quite happy to see that. As for Matsumotos itself, they opened a brand new store. So here are my takes on it 1. Great new look! Very fun, still kinda nostalgic, but nice 2. Great use of assembly line. Before it was a long line out the door. Now they have it down to a system, order at the door, shave ice in, toppings and then pay. 3. Lots of places to sit and enjoy, before we'd hang in our car or the logs on the ground. Now they have benches and plenty of shade. BUT!!! Something happened to the shave ice. It was no where near the soft quality it was before. It was like an old school snow cone. The syrup wasn't that good either. I was real sad by it. So I don't know. Do they sacrifice the ambiance for the quality or did I just hit them on a bad day? Who knows. But I still love to support local shops, so it probably won't be my last trip there!!

Came here because of the hype and recommendations from friends. The line is super long, no lie. But since I've been having shaved ice frequently, it just wasn't doing it for me. I expected Matsumoto to be everything, but the ice was fairly grainy. I have to say rainbow's end snack shop at manoa falls TOP this place any day! They might not have as much flavors, but definitely the ice was so soft and flaky it just melts in your mouth. Ps. I ordered mine with condensed milk, they forgot and I got too excited to try it.

Located in the town of Haleiwa, Matsumoto Shave Ice was always on our things to do on our trip to the North Shore after almost everyone we met told us not to miss this place. Lines at the store can get long but move real fast. Prices are $2.50 for a small bowl and $2.75 for a large, and the portions are quite substantial. We enjoyed a vanilla-strawberry and honeydew-coconut shave ice. Yummmm!! The shave ice just melts on your tongue in a burst of flavored icicles. Since the portions are large, the ice will thaw quickly enough, so keep the straw handy. Flavors are plenty ( including three sugar free flavors) and you can mix two flavors so there is something that appeals to everyone's taste. The shave ice is sold inside the store which sells other condiments as well. Highly recommend stopping here when you are on the North Shore!

I had been hoping to one day try this place. I saw this stuff 10 or 15 years ago on TV and thought it was so strange that it had to be good. I never thought I'd make it to Hawaii to be honest, so when the opportunity came up, I had only two requests, a luau and Motsumoto's. We arrived about 3 PM and the line was long... Really long. But don't be discouraged because the folks aren't ordering steaks. The line moves very quickly. I'd say there were 20 to 30 folks in front of us, and we moved into an ordering position after about 8 minutes in line. La Chica and I split a small with beans and banana flavored shaved ice. The first bite was odd, but by the time we had finished it, we understood how all the ingredients worked together. This is a must try for anyone visiting Oahu.

Arguably, the most famous and popular place to go to for shaved ice on the island. I wouldn't say it's the best, but pretty much everyone comes here at least once when they visit Oahu. The prices here are very reasonable and they offer the usual add-ons (azuki beans, condensed milk, mochi balls, etc.) for a bit extra. We tried the large "tropical" (guava, lilikoi, papaya) over vanilla ice cream with condensed milk. The portion size was huge, so I'm super glad we shared it! The flavor of the ice was a little weak, though I normally appreciate less sweetness...but this was almost a bit bland for my liking. It seems like the ice they use absorbs all the syrupy flavors, so it's hard to actually taste the sugary goodness, especially once the ice starts to melt. And indeed, the ice here melts right away into this disgusting soup...but at the same time, some of the ice remains and turns into blocks of ice that are harder than bricks, which makes it hard to eat! The shaved ice is definitely better than anything you can get out in SoCal, but it definitely isn't the best I've ever had by any means. Hawaiian shaved ice is often imitated, but never duplicated - it's hard to explain, but I can really taste the difference between authentic Hawaiian shaved ice and anything that's not. All this to say...this place is good for Hawaiian shaved ice, but I still prefer Waiola!

Finally came back after years of avoiding this place. Wow they really upgraded and remodeled this place. Now there is a big assembly line of workers making shaved ice. I ordered the shaved is with vanilla ice cream, pineapple, lilikoi and mango flavor with condensed milk on top for a total of $4. The ice was thinly shaved but not the same consistency as the stuff you get on Maui. Towards the end there is tons of syrup on the bottom, you are basically drinking straight sugar through a straw.

Wow this place gets PACKED! We ended up here after our last minute drive around the island. ATMOSPHERE: They're an old school grocery store that is known for their shave ice. Not SHAVED, just shave. You'll probably encounter a super long line at the entrance. Don't be alarmed, there's no natural disaster coming, it's the demand for their infamous Hawaiian dessert treat. SHAVE ICE: Grape - My ultimate favorite flavor where ever I go. The ice is chunkier than say Ululani's, and that's how I like it. I opted for vanilla ice cream at the bottom because it makes it all that much better. I also got a squeeze of condensed milk on the top but I'm not a fan of it because it's too sweet for me. It comes in an easy to hold cup that also prevents a melting, drippy mess. SERVICE: When the line gets long, a worker comes through the line to take orders to try and speed up service. Everyone was friendly. OVERALL: This is the ultimate Hawaiian shave ice style, nice and chunky. No fine powder dust for me!

I feel like I am going to take slack for this review but after seeing and hearing about this place I was somewhat expecting an orgasmic shave ice experience that just left me feeling like "that was it?" We were fortunate in that we caught them while there was a lull in the line so our wait was relatively short. I customized my flavors and had melona, honeydew and blue Hawaiian (as suggested by an employee when my mind went blank). I added condensed milk, mochi and paid for the plastic cone to prevent my feet from becoming coated in syrup. The store and ordering process is very organized. One person takes your orders, writes it on the cup and will either place it in the plastic container for you or hands you back the cone to proceed forward for payment. Once you pay, you are handed a number and wait patiently for yours to be ready. Napkins, extra spoons and straws are also available. Now onto the final product: 1. Good consistency to the shave ice. 2. Love that you can buy the plastic cone to prevent giant messes. 3. Although there's a huge selection of syrups, they failed to adequately "soak" my ice through with all the flavors. Other shave ice places promise you won't see "any white spots," and here there were several. Sadness. 4. The mochi here wasn't to my liking. The prices here are very reasonable and there's a rather large gift shop with everything from t-shirts to bags to even POGs (not the drink). I wouldn't seek this place out again, but I would go again next time I'm in the area I guess. But definitely there's a ton of better places without a 300 person long line.

This place isn't bad, but as many Yelpers have said, it's a bit of a tourist trap and overhyped in a major way. I know I was asking for it when I decided to visit here on a Sunday, but we were in the area and may not be back to the north shore. It was SO hot in there, I felt like I was working for that shaved ice! Although the lines are long, it went fairly fast. But it was so crowded at the same time, I was sweating profusely waiting for my frozen treat. Sorry if that was too much information ;) I ordered a small and you can get 3 flavors with a small. I got coconut cream, mango, and li hung mui, with a snow cap (condensed milk drizzle). I paid an extra 30 cents for a cup holder, which is a plastic . holder to put your paper cone holder in so it doesn't drip all over me. Verdict? The flavors were good, the price was reasonable (about $3), and the service was good. But overall it was just okay. The ice was soft but I've had better shaved ice elsewhere. Being a tourist trap, there is plenty of souvenirs to purchase here. They do have a lot of cute shirts. It's a place you go at least once to say you've gone.

This is just a stepping stone place where lots of tourists go and they serve pretty good shave ice. Now that it is at this new location, it is definitely more convenient. We were lucky enough to get there when the line wasn't too long, but once we got our shave ice the ice cream they originally have used before seemed like it tasted different. The portions are huge and it melts fast just like any other shave ice, so eat it quick!

There's no better place on Oahu for shave ice. I grew up here and have eaten at every shave ice location on the island. There are a couple other spots that come close, but nothing that compares. They make their own syrup flavors and they taste exactly like the fruit or flavor you would imagine. The ice is shaved very thin which makes the cone soft and fluffy and absorb the syrup well. I always add ice cream on the bottom and top it off with a "snow cap" or sweet condensed milk. You can also get them with azuki beans, which I do sometimes. The line can be intimidating, but it moves quickly and also gives you a chance to read through all the flavors. You can get up to three flavors and I always get at least that many.

My GF and I walked in 3 minutes after they closed their machines down we had zero idea they closed. They were nice enough to let me order. Seeing that all day my GF been talking about this place and I have never had it I was very thankful. Boy I see why they let me try it, cause they know I'll be back. It was unreal good . I have never had anything like it, talk about so much flavor and it tasted so BOMB. Thank you dearly for being so nice and having a awesome product.

Long line at around 1 pm on a sunny Monday around New Years, but the line moves pretty quickly. There's a dirty parking lot across the street designated for Matsumoto's. Around $16 for four small shaved ices with ice cream. There is a large grassy area right outside the grocery store with a lot of benches and areas you can stand to eat your ice cream. The shaved ice itself. I ordered a small shaved ice with ice cream and pineapple, lychee, and sour Li hing mui syrups. Strangely, my cone came out red, blue, and orange. The Li hing mui was delicious. The pineapple and lychee flavors were unrecognizable. I'm not sure if their syrup is suppose to be super special or whatever, but it still tastes artificial to me. The vanilla ice cream under the ice was normal ice cream. My mind was not blown. Overall, I didn't have an earth shattering experience, which is what I had been led to believe that I would have. I realize this may be blasphemous. Oh yeah, get the holder for thirty cents because my syrup definitely leaked through.

must order: Green Tea Mochi special with NO azuki red beans. Oh yeah, make sure you get Giovanni's Shrimp then come here for dessert. That's the best plan EVER. I ordered the green tea mochi special with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and condensed milk. That bowl of shaved ice was heavenly. The mochi balls were so good. The green tea flavoring mixed in with the vanilla ice cream really hit the spot on a nice warm day and after eating all that shrimp. I definitely want one right now. One more note: Share that green tea special bowl with someone. it's huge!

It's been a few years since I've been to Haleiwa, and it's changed a lot. The muddy dirt lot where we used to park is gone... replaced by a bunch of tourist-kine stores. There is an actual paved parking lot now, which is nice, but you have to walk past all the stores to get to the shave ice. Matsumoto's is still making some of the best shave ice in the world, but Shimazu is still my #1 favorite.

Their shave ice is good but I don't think that it is worth the hype. However, it is my first choice on the north shore simply because I'm not on Maui anymore and believe they have the best shave ice ever on earth lol. 4 stars because their flavors are really good and it's more of a tradition for friends and I to come here rather than it being "all that." Also they newly renovated and are in a smaller shop but though the lines are long it's pretty efficient and you get through rather quickly. My go to flavors are li hing mui, guava and lilikoi, with ice cream. Prices are reasonable and portions are good. the small is always enough for me. I thought all shave ice was the same but the ice they make here is not as fine as I have tried at other shave ice spots. It makes a difference because the "finer" the ice shaved, the more it allows the syrup to hold and here, well the syrup runs quickly to the bottom so keep the straw you'll need it. I kind of feel bad for comparing it to other shave ice shops but hey, you need some sort of scale and reference to base your reviews off of. Anyway the overall, it's good shave ice, not the best. If you're in the area then yeah go for it but not worth the hype.

What happened to this place? It's officially become bigger than it can handle. It's tourist overload to the highest degree. They just did a HUGE remodel. Don't get me wrong the place looks really nice. But it's far from the place it used to be 20 years ago. No longer that divey feel, where it almost seemed mandatory to have sand on your feet and still dripping wet from the beach. They went from being a secret, to popular, to bandwagon, to tourist trap, to gimmicky, and finally a weird corporate shave ice assembly line feel. I'll still remember them from when I was a kid at least.
