Have you tried their Guinness cream brûlée? It was delicious!

Best pub- pub fare anywhere. Not the beer selection of the brick store, but not the crushing crowd either. I do love the brisk store. Don't get me wrong. Their whiskey selection is far above anywhere else's.

My boyfriend and I spend a lot of time here. We both enjoy scotch a great deal, and if you are looking for a good selection, Mac McGee's is about as good it gets! Nestled in Decatur square, the delightful pub serves up some of the most epic pub food ever from their scratch-made kitchen. Shepherds pie? Oh yes, with ground lamb and the most delicious mashed potatoes on top. Irish breakfast? Bring on the black pudding! Want a burger? All of them are massive and tasty! And you must absolutely try the poutine! Cheese curds, chips, and gravy. Bring a friend, because the serving size is huge! All of the bartenders are informative and helpful. Need help deciding what to drink? They can hook you up! Whether you have one of their low priced daily whiskey flight specials, or build your own flight from their binder full of whiskey, chances are you will find something you love. Not a whiskey fan? They have an awesome selection of local taps and bottles. The cocktails are also to die for -- like Bloody Marys? Give the Bloody Mary Queen of Scots a try! Delicious twist on a classic cocktail. Overall I simply cannot say enough good things about Mac McGee. The pub has become a traditional hang out for me, and if you like an old style pub atmosphere, chances are it will for you, too! Be aware it can get quite loud and packed on busy nights, especially if there are events going on.

Four stars because it's a proper pour for Guinness, great! We came in on a Saturday night around 8:30 and with the sole intention to get some bread pudding and drinks. Very busy and great vibe. It was nice to be in a happening spot with everyone laughing and having a good time. Ordered the bread pudding and surprised it came out as more of a brownie consistency. Ice cream on it was good. Drinks were good so...4 stars it is. I will go back to olde blind dog for my bread puddings from now on :)

If you love whiskey this is your spot. If not, get the bees knees. Soooooo good. We got the chicken 65 and the fries apps. Both great and unique. Chicken was a little spicy but delecious and the fries had gravy and cheese! Enough said. Service was friendly and top notch.

Wonderful pud with 430 whiskeys! I am in heaven. Having a three flight with redbreast 15yrs. Still thinking about the next two. Cheers

Came for lunch with some friends to celebrate a birthday. Food was decent. I could have used more corned beef and cabbage on my sandwich as the bread to content ratio was off (not enough filling!). What's great about this place is their selection of Whisk(e)y. Very extensive book for those that want to explore their menu. Whisk(e)y flights come in 3's. Only 1 server and 1 bartender for the lunch crowd so was a little hard to get service, but kudos to the 1 waitress.

I am a sucker for irish pubs that serve classic food. When I ate here a cold snap had hit Georgia. With only light jackets my wife and I jumped from restaurant to restaurant looking to warm up. Mac McGee hit the spot with a very tasty Irish Coffee and some quality local beer. Very authentic.

MacMcGee is my favorite pub in Decatur, which is saying a lot when you have the likes of Brickstore and the Marlay House as close competitors. The pub is fairly small and cozy with a great pub ambiance. Although the beer list isn't as varied as some of the other bars in the area, MacMcGee's actually makes an effort to carry UK and Irish ales, which are oddly difficult to find in most Irish pubs these days as everyone seems to be carrying either all local breweries (most of which aren't all that good), or hopped up California ales. I always know I'll have a wide choice of nice sessionable ales at MacMcGee's. In most other local bars, you have to choose between the one or two beers on the menu that aren't 100 ibu IPAs. Non hop-heads need not apply. Other pros of MacMcGee's: -Friendly bartenders and staff that take the time to talk to customers and get to know them -Very good pub food. Love the tandoor chicken. Never had a bad food experience here -Extremely expansive whiskey list at great prices. $15 featured flights everyday -The car repair girl in the guy's bathroom. Classic. -Great special events. St. Paddy's here is awesome, as is New Year's, and Kentucky Derby Day. They had Founders KBS bottles for $5 this year, what the what!? -Never too crowded like the other big pub on the square. Can usually always find a nice place to sit at a table or bar So next time you're walking around the Decatur square and notice the bright red facade beckoning you, heed the call, have a pint of bombardier or fullers, eat some tandoor chicken, sip a shot of scotch, and pat yourself on the back for being a man/woman of impeccable taste. You are an inspiration.

Our second destination during my friend and I's Decatur Adventures day! So when we came to Mac McGee, we had no idea they were a whisky specialty bar. However, the bartender was very nice and he was more than willing to explain the menu for us. We decided to get the Georgia Peach, Bloody Mary, and Scotch Eggs to munch on the side. It was actually my first time trying a bloody mary and I really liked it. I'm usually not a fan of tomato juice but the drink was quite delicious. I also liked my georgia peach since I love peach flavored drinks. Scotch eggs were great as well; it was interesting to eat a fried boiled egg! The atmosphere was a bit down and quiet when we visited but its probably because we went a little too early. I'm sure it gets more lively later on into the evening.

What's better on a chilly evening than a hearty bowl of delicious chicken and dumplings? Nothing. Except maybe a hearty bowl of poutine to go along with it and a Manhattan to wash it all down. If your layer of winter blubber is thin and you need something to stick to your ribs, go to Mac McGees. #wintersurvivalguide

Authentic it's not, but the illusion is quite good. Good Irish pub, food is remarkable and a standout -though personally I sometime wish the portions were, well, a tad bit...larger. I really do think this place would be exponentially better if the lighting were better. its just too damn dark to even read the menu. .. Sometimes I just want to go out for a beer and chill with a mag or paper but McGee's low lighting makes this impossible. Often it's so dark one can't see the floor! Dark, dark bars are the purview of strip joints and places catering to barflies - I'm sure the owners don't aspire to this, but to peer into this place on a Sat. afternoon would say otherwise - (...alas no strippers)

Been here several times for both lunch and dinner and it's always perfect. Amazing selection of beer and wiskey, superb food and excellent service. I've known Carolyn for many years and it's always a pleasure to see her face when I walk in and let's not forget her attentive service. The fish and chips are always a go too, the baked cod is flaky and rich with a ton of flavor, the chicken sandwich is crisp and fresh with the apple slice, the trout dip is always a favorite of mine... The list goes on and on. This place never disappoints. Can't go wrong with whiskey and warm hearty food! Come here and be merry!

A friend and I checked this place out since it was listed as one of Atlanta's best bars. I was not disappointed...great stock of spirits and brews...the bartender Autumn was fantastic. I wasn't really hungry but I tried out the fried pickles and decided to order another serving. I will definitely return

I didn't eat, and I didn't sample any of the whiskey. However, I know a good local pub when I see one. While visiting friends in Decatur, I ended up on my own for the afternoon and after exploring the area for a bit, I decided that I felt like spending the afternoon in a friendly neighborhood bar. This was just the place. Good beer, friendly service, and colorful local characters make this place everything an Irish pub should be.

Easily the most authentic Irish bar in Atlanta. I have made finding one of these places a personal passion of me to shed light on the hidden gems and uncover the shady places pretending to call themselves "Irish" or even "pub." I do like Meehan's in Atlantic Station and RiRa in Midtown, but Mac McGee sets the bar (haha) so damn high as far as being a true Irish bar. The ambiance is cozy and wonderful and with the shitty and cold weather we have been dealing with in Atlanta, you should make a beeline to this place and stake a seat at the bar or at a table. The music selection is usually pretty great, and the food is top-notch - pub favorites, but way more than that as well. The curry and chips are no fucking joke - more like broasted potato spears that fill you up just enough so you can keep drinking. But the draw is of course the great beers on tap and bottles and THE WHISKEY. Holy cow, they have so many whiskeys. I just started coming here, but love it so much. Can't wait to get back from my trip, stop in and settle in to watch some soccer. This is my future home for the 2014 World Cup.

The staff is very personable and are great for making suggestions if you're a newbie. If you know your way around their whiskey bible then you will find something you like. Great selection so it's great for anyone.

Love the food and drinks, especially the Dublin Bloody Mary. Autumn was our bartender the first time we went and she was great. The other servers, not so much. But I had such a good first impression that I keep going back. and everything I tried was so delicious.

After a few failed attempts to find a place close to our hotel, my future sister in law suggested we head to Duluth to check out a couple of hot spots for a nice night cap. We ended up at Mac McGee's... Irish Pub, uh yes please! Decor is exactly what you would expect from an Irish pub. Dar wood, nice long bar and we opted for the booth for the four of us, which was nice and comfy and did the trick. Good beer selection, which will always rate high in my book. I ended up with the Double Wide IPA, well, a few double wides.... and the boyfriend had the Founder's Red Ale, which made him a happy man. We order a few bites to soak up some of the alcohol. My future sister in law ordered the Whiskey Bread Pudding.... I had to have a little bite and must say, I loved it. Not too strong of a whiskey taste, but nice and egg-y.... it reminded me more of a Yorkshire pudding. Loved it. I ordered the Scotch egg (I can never say no to a Scotch egg) and the boy ordered the poutine. The Scotch egg was ok... it came already sliced with a horseradish/mustard sauce. Not the best ever, but a few bites hit the spot. Poutine was kind of average as well... but hey, we were really here just for the drinks so wasn't really expecting much. Our server was super friendly and fast and the crowd seemed like a good crew. Noise level was mild, so we had a great time just conversing over our drinks.

I've been coming here from time to time since it opened and I have always loved the atmosphere and the friendly service. However I had the corned beef and cabbage sandwich... pretty tasty, but for $10.00 I was hoping for some corned beef! Just a few little chunks, but loaded with cabbage. I used to get the Irish breakfast, bet they shrank the portions and Kept the HIGH price. Still a great place to relax and enjoy a pint. I do like the soda bread and the house made Butter and curry chips are yummy. I Don't like bitching about this place because I like it, but I just think the main dishes and sandwiches are way over priced for the portions.

The 2" thick binder of whiskeys from around the world was impressive. I really enjoyed the flights - and the cheese plate was delicious too! Though my whiskey-drinking friends are far and few between, whenever I meet someone who does enjoy whiskey, I immediately think of Mac McGee and recommend it. A bonus is that they stay open very late, which is perfect for night of chillin out while sippin', munchin', chattin' with good company. Also, what I love about great whiskey in general is the absence of misery the next morning... one yawn, one stretch, a cold glass of water, and I'm ready to take on the day's agenda.

A good Irish pub in the middle of downtown Decatur. I will say that I enjoy the drink more than the food, but the food isn't bad. A nice cozy bar that you can grab a cold one & enjoy a good conversation with friends. I will say that when the other bars in this area are packed you can get the same svc. right here.

Service is just as friendly as my first visit, but their food has really improved. I highly recommend their cod sandwich, described as fried fresh Alaskan cod with coleslaw, tartar, arugula, and red onion. The chips were delightful - gourmet chips seasoned with herbs. Portion was small for the price - nearly $10 for a very small portion of fish - but really well done. I had the fish and chips last time, and the fish was too salty, while the chips were boring and plain.

Mac McGee, you get 4 stars for food, but 2 stars for service, which in my opinion, evens you out to a 3 star experience overall. My aunt and uncle were coming into town to visit my cousin who lives in Duluth, so as part of the visit, we managed to squeeze in a dinner together as well. When my cousin suggested Mac McGee I agreed knowing they'd love its pub-by atmosphere (dark wood, sporting events on the TV, Irish and English signs and sports teams decorating the walls, etc.), the Irish / English food, and the extensive drink list (they have a whiskey book with over 400 options). But from the moment my boyfriend and I walked in the door (we arrived a bit earlier than the other half of our party), service left something to be desired. For a good five minutes we fiddled around on our own trying to push a couple of tables together toward the back to fit our party of six. Finally, the owner seemed to grasp we were doing something out of the ordinary and proceeded to assist us in this endeavor. Ok, fine. No big deal. Once everyone arrived and hellos had been exchanged, and menus reviewed we all placed our drink and dinner orders: orders of burgers, fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash ensued. When everything came out to the table, it was served up but no one had napkins or cutlery. When we alerted our waitress to this, she brought out three sets of silverware and left. She went to go take another table's drink order... Huh? Three people at our table still had no napkins or forks, but we were taken care of? I know the burger and fish could be eaten with one's fingers, but shouldn't the diners be given the choice, and a napkin to wipe their fingers on after? So after about three more tries, we secured enough napkins and silverware (seriously, we had to keep asking her over and over because she'd only bring us one extra set of napkins and silverware each time - not the best listener ever). It also took some extra prodding to get water glasses refilled in a timely manner - so that's my beef with the service that night. And now for the food. I had the shepherd's pie, and I was very impressed. My healthy serving came out in its own little crock that had been baked in the oven: the mashed potatoes on top were nicely toasted, and the lamb, peas, and carrots in a thick sauce underneath were very hot and tender and tasty. It came with a slice of warm dark rye bread with butter, and a salad of arugula with some cherry tomato slices, and croutons. Nice sides to go with the richness of the shepherd's pie. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals too judging by the emptiness of all the plates afterwards. For a final Irish finish to the meal, both my aunt and uncle ordered Irish coffees (which they deemed better than their favorite restaurant back home), my boyfriend had a housemade Irish cream coffee (similar to the regular Irish coffee but richer), and we all shared a whiskey bread pudding with Bailey's ice cream and a drizzle of Guinness caramel. I'm not gonna lie, I think the dessert was the best part of the dinner. It was brought out warm from the oven, the ice cream was cold (and I could actually taste a hint of Bailey's in the ice cream), the caramel was lovely. It was really great bread pudding, honestly. And that's my take on Mac McGee. Service was severely lacking this time around, food did its best to make up for it, but I still don't know how soon I'll be going back all things considered.

Does the world need another Irish Pub?? Hell yes it does! From the first moment I walked into the place I could tell it was special. We went here for an app or 2 before heading over to the I. Pig. And, I was impressed! First of all, their whiskey selection is the stuff of legends! I was surprised considering the place is not that big. They have a little bit of everything and offer tasting flights as well...I plan to take full advantage of that next time! Good beer selection with a lot of local and craft brews...very commonplace for Decatur but I've come to expect it. Good tasting Guinness and quite a few others on tap. We settled for the cheese plate and scotch egg. Cheese plate came with bread and 3 types of cheese (a bleu, camembert, and another I can't remember). Pretty good...the scotch egg was damn good. Take a hard boiled egg, wrap it in sausage and deep-fry. Yep, you want one, I know. Very friendly staff kept our glasses full and we left happy. Give this place a try!!

Want shockingly rude service and a waitress who throws temper tantrums?? Then by all means, please come here!! A large group of 11 of us all went out on a Saturday evening and eventually settled into Mac McGee. The restaurant was busy but not full by any means, and we asked if we could be accommodated. We were seated in a large u-shaped booth up front with a 2 person table next to it and a high top behind. We managed to fit and set about ordering drinks and meals. Bear in mind, this was a group of folks in their late 30s through 50 years of age, so we simply kept to ourselves, talked, and a few of the men watched a basketball game on a TV near us. When the food order came out, a younger guy helped serve our table, and tried to put down a pork sandwich that nobody claimed. We couldn't figure out who ordered it. When all of us but one had our food, we realized they had gotten her order wrong. She ordered a shredded pork sandwich (which comes on a bun) and a side of mashed potatoes. She got a sliced pork sandwich on toast with a side of fries. She realized the mistake and told them as they continued to place other plates on the table. The guy seemed to have an issue taking her word for it that the order was wrong. He kept saying, "Are you sure nobody ordered this? Well I'm just going to put it down here in the middle of the table in case somebody decides to claim it." We all looked at each other like, "Huh? What are we supposed to do with this dish nobody ordered??" She stated again what her actual order had been, and the waitress came back and said they'd try to work this out. The guy reached to remove the mystery pork and once again stated, "Are we SURE nobody ordered this?" I mean for crying out loud! Just admit somebody screwed up and get the woman her food! When the check came, things got extremely weird and uncomfortable. The waitress had put the entire bill on one check. We were a mix of couples and single folks, and we asked if they could separate it out. In fairness, I do not know if we stated this up front. We had done so at several other establishments that night only to have them put it all on one check anyway, so by that time, we may have just forgotten to ask. That said, the other establishments made every effort to accommodate us. Unfortunately, the waitress here told us that we needed to "separate it out for her and she'd come back for it." Um....okay. So we all passed the check around and either initialed or put our names next to the items we ordered, corresponding to the names on the credit cards we'd be paying with. When the waitress returned for the check, she immediately flipped on the "bitch switch." She looked down at the check and saw how we had separated it out and became angry and irritated. She told us, visibly annoyed, that this was "not going to work" and that she "needed some numbers" and that we were going to "clog up her till all night." She picked up the bill and flipped it over, slammed it down on the table, sighed heavily, and looked to a woman in our group and snapped, "What did you have?" She made every person at the table recite their order and wrote it down as she collected our cards. With each card she collected, she put our names next to the corresponding meal and threw our cards down on the table into a pile. THREW them! How putting our info next to the NAME of the food was any more efficient than us putting our info next to the NAME AND PRICE of the food, I do not know. But apparently, her way was right, ours was wrong, and that was it! Everyone was completely taken aback. Nobody even spoke! Of course, as we had a large party, the gratuity had already been added to our bills. We signed our receipts and left. Unfortunately, the next bar we wanted to visit did not have TVs, and the guys wanted to finish the game, so they went BACK to McGees and immediately got our same table, same waitress. I begrudgingly returned and we all ordered another round of drinks. At one point, she asked the 2 gentlemen in our party who sat at the 2-top if they could squish into the u-shaped booth with the rest of us so she could seat other customers. She seated a young couple, and then later proceeded to sit down with them and chat for 10 minutes! She asked our party to move so she could seat her friends there and then sit with them! UNBELIEVABLE!! Again, she brought everything on one bill, and this time everybody paid in cash except me...I had none. I had ONE drink for $7.00. I put a line next to it and wrote "card" next to the drink and handed her my card. She charged the entire bill to my card!! I simply took everyone's cash and just got the hell out of there! Our table must have generated $300 to $500 alone that night, and we were treated absolutely HORRIBLY. I will NEVER return to this location (Roswell is top-notch, btw!) and I will tell everyone I know about the miserable experience here!

Mac McGee's was our second choice last Thursday for my friend's birthday dinner. I was very pleased with the experience. We ended up splitting the poutine appetizer. I should've waited for it to cool because I burned my mouth which did put a damper on the flavor of the rest of the meal. The birthday girl got the corned beef and cabbage sandwich with a side of non-vegetarian friendly kale and I got the burger with a fried egg and a side of mashed potatoes. Anywhere that offers a fried egg on a burger is okay in my book. Between the poutine and the wine, I had filled myself up and was forced to ask for a box. The mashed potatoes were equally solid. I tried the kale as well and it was also good. No corned beef for this redhead, though. I think our waitress felt bad about ignoring us in favor of the larger party next to us. She gave us a free round of drinks when she brought my to go box. Funnily enough, we knew several members of the other party and weren't phased at all by them getting her attention. The extra round was certainly appreciated. I would definitely go back when I'm in the area and looking for pub fare.

Pleasantly surprised by this place and I have no idea why I haven't been here sooner seeing as how it is one of the few places open for lunch on a Monday in Downtown Decatur. Lovely fish and chips and the menu also includes a full Irish breakfast. The best part of the meal for me of course was the bread pudding -elevated by a beer based caramel sauce. Yum!

I love the atmosphere. Decatur bustles on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but no one visits Mac McGee's. There were three people at Mac's during lunch. One of us ordered a brisket sandwich and I ordered the fish sandwich. My fish sandwich was very good, but not great. I didn't like the bread and the fish was a little over battered, under seasoned and just a little too fishy smelling. I was hungry, so I ate most of it. Fortunately, I did not get sick :). The waitress was very entertaining and sweet.

Pretty good food and generally excellent service in a nice, small space. I've been here a number of times and probably need to do so more often. It's not the Brick Store, but then I don't think the two are really comparable. Both have their place on the Square. If you like whiskey and a pub atmosphere, this place is for you. Good beer selection, too.

I spent an entire Friday afternoon enjoying the bar and the company at Mac McGee. If you haven't checked out this Decatur gem, please stop in! I wish I could remember the names of the great wait and bar staff there...I can only blame my forgetfulness on the many delicious pints they poured me while I enjoyed catching up with some friends from out of town. The staff truly made the experience: we were all joking and laughing so much, by the time we left, I felt almost like family. It was the first time I've been to an Irish pub in the US that actually felt like Ireland, including plenty of the famous craic. Definitely worth a visit next time you're on the square.

Mac McGee has become a staple for when we are out on the town in Decatur. The Guinness is always the right temperature and the Irish Car Bombs are always flowing. They have an amazing Whiskey selection and the atmosphere is always just right. I've ended up several St. Patrick's nights here and I can't think of any reason for breaking that tradition. The staff is great and this is truly what an Irish bar should be like. I would put this in the top 5 Decatur bars for sure, and for those that live around here, you know that is stiff competition.

I know I'll sleep well tonight dreaming of that wall of whiskey. If you like whiskey/scotch/bourbon, you need to come here. Now. They've got an incredible selection, from the cheap stuff all the way to the holy-shit-I-just-drank-my-paycheck. The bartenders are happy to make recommendations, and if liquor isn't your thing they're also able to pull a perfect pint of Guinness. Cheers. The ambiance is pretty authentic for an Irish pub: good tunes, soccer on the tele, dark wood, and a convivial atmosphere that makes you want to while away the hours, totally unaware of the time or the fact that it's a school night. One of my favorite options on the square for a nightcap, or to start out my day. No shame in saying it.

I love to come to this place when I want to celebrate my heritage. This pub is pretty much very authentic. I used to hang with a few guys from Northern Ireland. Seen pictures from their pub crawls, and I can attest that this place looks real. Real warm and cozy, how I like my pubs. I really don't come here for the food but by wife raves about the curry fries. A lot of Irish brew on tap, and tons of whiskeys. What I really love is that they serve Guinness in a proper Imperial pint glass. I pisses me off when it is served in a American pint glass. It just seems wrong. Also it is a short walk from my Mother in laws. Just let her watch the kids, and get some personal time. Love this place!

Pleasantly surprised with the food! I'd been here for drinks before (they have a plethora of beer and whiskey choices, hard to stay away), but not to eat. Side salad of arugula, baby tomatoes, thinly sliced radishes and a tangy dressing was delicious. Nice fish n chips, chips were crispy, much better than typical floppy steak fries. Slaw portion was miniscule, but I didn't love it, so no loss. Mussels were treated to a bacon broth. This could have led to plate licking (if it were not date night). My sweet got the Irish Breakfast. We've been to Ireland and love the big meaty breakfasts, so it was nice to have the option, even for dinner. The bangers aka sausage were housemade and perfect, and so was the crispy soda bread, although I could have eaten a loaf of it. Bartenders are very sweet. Cheers~

I have been to Ireland and I can unequivocally state that Mac McGee is the most authentic Irish public house, or "pub", that I've found to date in Atlanta. True to form, most of the furniture and decor has been shipped over from the Emerald Isle and many of the staff are Irish natives. Food: The menu at Mac McGee is not particularly extensive, but the offerings are still fairly well-executed representations of traditional Irish fare. Nonetheless, some of the dishes do contain a slight Americanized twist, which I'm assuming was to appeal to the masses. During my recent visit, I opted for the curry chips as an appetizer and the 'ploughman' sandwich (tillamook cehddar, lettuce, pickles, and grain mustard) as an entree, both of which were sizable in portion and flavorful. However, neither dish was exceptional enough to prompt me to return for a meal. I was also slightly underwhelmed with the beverage selection. Although the draft and bottled beer menu is fairly lengthy, the wine options were virtually non-existent. In fact, it was the first public house I've ever been to, including those in Ireland, where I couldn't find an acceptable wine to order. Service: Friendly, but not the epitome of expedience. The staff are quite knowledgeable about the food and drink options, so patrons should feel free to solicit recommendations if need be. Atmosphere: Like a skunk, it's small, it's cute, and it stinks. The decor is clearly authentic, but the hard wood seats are incredibly uncomfortable and have clearly absorbed a fair amount of beer, blood, sweat, and cigarette smoke over the years. Cost: Inexpensive. Appetizers range from $3-$10, sandwiches range from $7-$9 (includes Irish chips), and entrees range from $11-$16. Other: Contrary to traditional Irish pub culture in which tipping of waitstaff is not necessary, tipping is appropriate at Mac McGee. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't afford to provide a reasonable monetary tip to service staff, then you have no business going out to eat or drink in the first place.

Irish pub loosing its Irish charm due to a pissed up chef. Mac's is a great little bar and its charm was augmented by the lovely original Irish Linda; she made the place for us. Seems however management cannot reign in their abusive kitchen staff and she's gone. My suggestion: put the beer price up if need be and hire someone in the kitchen with professionalism - fire that idiot - and get the charm back ASAP. Bars aren't all about money, they're about the people and banter/dialogue. For my part, and quite a number of customers, this is a negative now for Macs. It's not too late to correct it. The perfect Irish pub. I went here with three friends on a Saturday night around 8 and Mac's was hopping. The draft beer list is LONG, and luckily our friendly waitress was knowledgeable and generous on the samples, otherwise we would have had no idea where to start. I had a delicious heferweisen to remind myself that it is actually almost summer. When we got our beers, we pored over the BINDER OF WHISKEYS (they have ~400 kinds of whiskey), and decided on three to get in a flight. For only $15, the whiskey flight is a great deal. I could lie and tell you I know which three we got, but all I have is that one was really smokey, one smelled like chocolate, and one smelled like earth (in a really good way). They sort the whiskeys by region, and then by sub-region (ie. specific Isle in Scotland, etc). Very very detail oriented for what looks like a typical Irish pub. We shared the bread pudding (made with guinness? or Baileys? or whiskey? something like that) and it was also awesome. We had a lovely table outside but when it got chilly they moved us inside with no trouble. I highly recommend Mac McGee's!

I love this place. Or loved it to be honest. The atmosphere, the selection of great beers & whiskeys and the amazing food. All of it was great but what really kept me coming back was the fantastic front of house staff. Linda, Marina, Caroline, and Laura always made Mac McGee's better. They made a great pub excellent. They always had time to chat (even when it was busy), they knew my wife & my kids and they always went out of their way to make my time there more than just, "drinking at a bar". It saddens me to know that my favorite person at Mac McGee's, Linda, is no longer there. I do not know all the details but it seems the kitchen staff created a pretty abusive environment there as it relates to the waitstaff, specifically Linda. Why? I have no idea. All I know is that what used to be one of my favorite spots in Decatur Square is now somewhere I never want to step foot in again. Also, why would I want to spend my money in a place that doesn't stick up for the women who make that place great to begin with?! If you can't treat your own staff with respect why should I assume you will do the same for me, the customer? Sad.

My go-to place for a nice pint or a shot of quality whisky when in Decatur. A great atmosphere in the middle of Decatur's city square. Super-friendly bartenders and waitstaff. Yummy appetizers (the cheese plate is a stand-out) and hearty entrees. Highly recommended. And, you can take MARTA home afterwards, if you have one too many. Bonus!

Been here a few times now. The service isn't fantastic, but it isn't bad either. Their beer selection isn't huge, however their whiskey selection is. You can do whiskey flights for $20-$30, and the selection is massive. If you like your irish, scotch, american whisk(e)y or bourbon, come here.

Very reliable Irish place on the square in Decatur. Looked old when it was brand new. Fine burgers stand out on the small menu, and my wife was very pleased with her lamb sandwich. The whiskey list is something you can get lost in, and there are enough good craft beers on tap to please snobs. The staff has been pleasant and the service good any time I have come in.

Stopped by for a drink with the wife. The wife had a flight of whiskey's and I decided on a Sazerac. Not too many mixologists know how to make this drink, but Kourtney knocked it out of the park, twice. The appetizers were great. Had the three cheese plate with toasted bread and the farro salad. Awesome.

Cool, cozy, Irish pub in Decatur. I wanted to like this place because the ambiance was charming and unique but I couldn't. The food was overpriced and not very good. I ordered the full irish breakfast, which consists of two fried eggs, house-made banger & rasher, black & white puddings, beans, tomato, irish soda bread. I ordered this because I had never had black pudding, white pudding, or Irish soda bread. The black & white puddings are interesting but not really very good and the Irish soda bread is a dark, hard piece of dry bread. The banger (sausage) & rasher (thick bacon) were ok but pretty plain. I tried the fried cod and chips. The fish was greasy and nothing special. I would not recommend this place and won't be going back. Maybe this place has authentic Irish cuisine (I wouldn't know...never been to Ireland) but either way it's not good.

We were walking off our Spanish tapas dinner and spotted some dancers we knew at Mac McGee. Said hi and turned to walk inside. I was asked if I was looking for this, the whisky book. Indeed I was. Their whisky book is a finely detailed tome dedicated to whiskies from Ireland, Scotland, Kentucky and more. I appreciate their thorough notes. We asked our waitress for a recommendation. Being an Irish lass, she was more than happy to point us to the Irish whiskies. I had the Jameson Limited Reserve 18, she had the Redbreast 12, reputedly better than the 15. I had happy to try these, since a Cork friend said he owed me an Irish whisky. I'll drink to that. We were both pleased with our recommendations. Thanks, Mac McGee

This place was impressive in it's selections. The wall of whiskey had my out of town guests mouths watering at the variety of options. We were only in for a quick bit as we were hoping around but from the short time there everyone was friendly and I will go back again soon I'm sure.

Came across this place as tourists exploring "The Dec." Please don't hurt me if that is a horribly outdated way to refer to Decatur... It was a pretty late lunch we were going for so most of the eateries on Sycamore were closed. But of course because soccer was on the tube (I know, I'm using British lingo to write about an Irish pub. I'm American, can you blame me?) this place was open and a good number of avid fans were glued to their seats, clasping their beers and cheering for Ireland. No wait. I loved the decor inside. Very traditional and a lot of character. Books, sporting memorabilia, flags, banners, model cars. We weren't very well-versed on Irish food but settled on the shepherd's pie, house-made rasher, black and white pudding, and the arugula salad. I also tried the Murphy's Stout (I asked for a recommendation similar to a Guinness... how adventurous of me). Everything was great! Be aware that if you can't stomach intestines (ha, get it?) (no? just me? okay), you should NOT eat the black pudding. I can. I don't care about eating congealed pig blood. Service was warm and friendly. Perfect way to spend a few hours in the Dec!

My friend and I were really excited about hitting up Leon's on Saturday night. Somehow we expected a miracle: for the wait to be under an hour...but it was 1 hour 45min so we wandered our way in to Mac McGee's. SO GLAD WE DID. The experience was amazing from the start! We found two spots at the end of the bar and the bartender almost immediately welcomed us, introduced himself, and shook our hands. I was impressed. His name was Anton, and his friendly demeanor and attentiveness was present the rest of the evening. Side note: HE is IRISH. If I find out that accent is fake I might die. The food was pretty good...I braved the lamb shepherds pie. I've never tried lamb before and it wasn't my favorite. I don't blame the pub on my pickiness though! My friend let me steal some fries and they were FANTASTIC. Beer was great, Anton let me sample a couple and was quick to recommend stuff. I'm a big fan of the atmosphere. Maybe I've been spending too much time in smokey dive bars because it was so refreshing to be in a clean, warmly lit, older crowdish environment. Don't be wrong...I still love my dive bars. Anyway go there, sit at the bar and enjoy the best customer service in Atlanta!

Great outdoor seating on the square (overlooking the park instead of a wall like the others). Good drinks, but mostly whiskey based. Excellent Farro Salad

Enthusiasm, enthusiasm, and charm. Very nice quaint pub nestled in Decatur. Very up close and personal, like they force you to talk to your neighbor. I liked that coziness a lot. There was also a lot enthusiasm from the bartenders, offering me a chance to try some new beers, since I always pick the same one, he gave me a chance to try something new. That's always a plus. I loved my experience and if I am ever in the area and need a quiet place to celebrate my Sunday, this place would be it.

I heard this place had a soft opening about a week ago and immediately wanted to check it out. I saw the development of this big bright red establishment and was excited to have an Irish Pub other than Brickstore in the Square. After downing several Bloody Marys at Feast with friends we walked over the square and popped into this pub. The decor, ambiance and staff made this place warm, comfortable and welcoming. I had the cider and enjoyed every sip. We also ordered food and I remember the fish and chips being good. I know it will be a matter of days before this place is as packed as Brickstore and that makes me a wee bit sad. It is less pretentious and such a charming addition to the other restaurant/bar fair on the square. I'll definitely be back soon.

Standard Irish Pub, complete with red door. Great selection of beer and whiskey with knowledgeable staff to boot. The place is small and intimate, making for a great spot to have some drinks after work or on a lazy weekend afternoon- that is, if Brickstore is too busy. They have some tough competition as their neighbors, but it looks like they're doing okay.

Finally, an Irish pub that plays authentic Irish music and serves authentic food. Their chips and curry is exceptional, and their whiskey list is impressive. Check out this place for sure!

Typically any bar/restaurant within Decatur's fine square is always a good time. Mac McGees's is just that, but with a mighty fine whiskey and beer selection. Below I've listed a few of my highlights. I also want to give the severs/bartenders two thumbs up! Everything came out quickly and perfectly done. They were also beyond friendly. Highlights - *Beef jerky - not the largest portion, but delicious! *Chips (Ok, I have a weakness for steak fries and that's basically what chips are in Ireland) :) *Burgers (I have a few friends try different burgers and they were all cooked perfectly and everyone LOVED them. *$6 coffee and baileys, where you can actually taste the baileys. NICE! Note - this isn't the biggest place, but if you can snag one of their tables, you're golden. There's also a great bar with stools and several outside tables. Overall...if you;re looking for a fun, affordable Irish Pub with a great selection of drinks and food...look no further!

So I came here yesterday looking for good irish food. According to yelp, this place is supposed to be as authentic as it gets. Well... I'm pretty sure authentic doesn't mean flavorless. I got the Leg of Lamb, a side of mashed potatoes and a chocolate terrine. So, let me just put it out there, the Irish know how to make potatoes. The mashed potatoes were creamy, smooth, buttery and altogether very good. It was seasoned perfectly and had a dense but not cloying consistency. I really liked them. However, the star of the meal for me were definitely the seared confit potatoes. They had a crisp skin on the outside (which stayed crisp the entire meal) and a fluffy , soft and slightly sweet inside. Cutting through them and biting through the crisp skin and then encountering the slightly sweet inside of the potato was simply a delight the entire meal. The rest of the lamb dish was only average, with maybe could have been a little bit better. The lamb was cooked medium rare, but beware, it is served off the bone. Also, the pee puree was kinda just... bleh, to me it really didn't add anything to the dish. But the most disappointing was the fact that basically the entire dish was underseasoned. I hate using steak sauce at steakhouses and I absolutely hate putting salt and pepper on dishes that I order at a restaurant. I guess I'm of the belief that the dish served by the chef is the most pure unaltered by you. And for 14 dollars, it simply is not a lot of food. Especially since I mentioned to the waitress multiple times that I was REALLY HUNGRY. But nope, she didn't recommend anything and left me to just figure everything out myself. That kinda just bugs me. For dessert I got the chocolate terrine. It basically just a small piece of thick chocolate mousse. It's about 2 x 2 x .05 inches. And to be honest, was just kinda plane for me. It was crusted with big chunks of sea salt, which while adding a different and unique aspect to the dish, was not uniform at all in its distribution. This led to moments where I would have a ton of crunchy salt on one small cut of chocolate, and moments where I wouldn't have any. Just kinda disappointing. Overall, I was just kind of disappointing in this dining experience. The food was just generally underseasoned and unremarkable. However. I did love the potatoes. That was really the one high point of the meal for me.

Probably my favorite place in the city. They have a big book of Whisk(e)y for you to choose from Excellent food (you want the corned beef sandwich, trust me). Good beer list if you're not into whiskey. Mixed drinks are good too. Try the Irish coffee. I believe that they don't carry other liquor like gin, vodka, and whatnot so beware. You can hang out on a weeknight and read a book without the place being too loud or crowded. Feels like an old-school neighborhood pub. Good environment- laid back clientele instead of the annoying party girls or yelling types. A little small for large groups. If you have more than 6, you'll probably fit better somewhere else. I went on one night where someone had a birthday party with 20 people and it was just unpleasant for everyone else. Would prefer if Decatur bars in general were a little less family-friendly what with allowing small children in. I don't want to be watching my language while having a drink at a bar. It's just wrong.

If you like Irish pubs, you'll like this place. The entire decor of the place, so I was told by one of the staff, was actually shipped over from the Emerald Isle, and the owner and some of the staff are Irish - so it's about as authentic an experience as you're likely to find in Atlanta. Mac McGee has a terrific scotch and whiskey selection, not to mention some good beers on tap. Their bar food is generally quite good for a pub (and in fact easily better than some restaurants I've been to), and unless you're a foodie, you should enjoy pretty much anything you order. (I recommend the chips, the fish & chips, the Irish breakfast, and the braised beef brisket sandwich highly.) On top of everything else, the staff is unusually friendly here, more than willing to stop and have a chat, if you're so inclined. The only possible downside of the place, in fact, is the small size and the closeness of the tables inside - but then, if you like intimate pub settings, that shouldn't faze you at all.

The whiskey selection is good, but the service can be fickle. The main reason to come here, in my opinion, is the whiskey flights. You can get a fantastic selection of whiskeys for only $15. On slower days, you might wait quite a while for the server to get back to you (it is thus sometimes preferable to sit at the bar itself). The food is above average relative to the feel of the bar (the aesthetics are "dive bar" through and through). The beer and cheese soup is great; the house-made bangers and mash is dead on; and the car bomb is the perfect desert to balance the amount of hard alcohol you will surely have consumed. In summary: it is definitely worth checking out.

Came in here on a friday night and the place was full but it wasn't ridiculously packed. The service was fast and the waitress was really nice. They have a minimal beer selection here but its all good stuff. They have Harpoon IPA here on tap which is one of my favorite. We had the scallops dish and pork belly with cabbage. They were both awesome and i'm looking forward to coming back here again to dive into the extensive scotch list. I also saw the fish and chips looked awesome here, thats what ill be trying next time.

We stopped in here after running some errands in downtown Decatur. We had some time to kill on our parking meter so off we went for a drink! We grabbed a seat at the bar. The place was empty which wasn't surprising considering it was like 2 pm on Friday. Conan greeted us immediately and allowed my husband to try several beers. I knew exactly what I wanted - Black Velvet. Mangers cider with Guinness...yum, yum, yum! My husband ultimately decided on a Heineken after sampling about 5 or 6 of them. We didn't eat so we cannot comment on the food but what I saw others order around me looked good. They do have your traditional Irish fare including black pudding...try it if you dare :)

Mac McGee's is a cool little Irish bar on the Square in Decatur. We went there as part of the annual Pirate Pub Crawl held every September. About 50+ pirates showed up at the door and Mac's servers and bartenders were quick to having us all imbibing spirits and brew. The beer selection is awesome, around 20 taps focusing about 75% on American crafts and 25% on imports. They have the classic British brews and a couple small-batch offerings as well. As far as whiskey goes, I've never seen such a large selection. They must have more than 100 different whiskeys to choose from. There is also a whiskey flight menu, where you can choose between several assortments of 3 different short-pour whiskeys. The interior is decently lit, lots of wood, and tightly packed little tables. Not a ton of space, but a nice homey feeling bar. Both of the bartenders were really cool and knowledgeable in regard to beer, whiskey, and cocktails. The food menu is fair, not a ton of offerings but some Irish classics make their way into print and everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked and smelled great. The bread pudding made me drool. I ordered some mussels that were cooked with beer and bacon. They were pretty good, savory and cooked perfectly, but the broth wasn't amazing. They should serve more bread with the order, it was really tasty but small. I liked the mussels, but I've had better. Over all a good little spot in the square. If I was in Decatur, though, I'd hit up the Brick Store Pub for beer and the Iberian Pig for food. Not saying I won't come back, but Mac's got a lot of competition in this hood.

Always bubbling with Irish alcoholism and glee, this place is one of the few in Atlanta you can find a good scotch egg, and a wall of whiskey to keep you satisfied for a year.

If the fact that you always hear Irish accents from the customers as well as the staff dosn't tell you its a good Pub then just look around you. The ambiance is cosy and warm and the staff always make you feel welcome. The food is amazing I just had the leg of Lamb sandwich, just one more item to add to my favorites on the menu. Linda is our favorite waitress/friend she always makes our visit better. Just remember...Great food...Great Whiskey and Beer...and great people. We go often. P.S. Best Fish & Chips in town

Mac McGee's is probably the coolest Irish bar that I've been to. I mean, let's face it, the Irish bar thing has been done to death. I would literally rather drink almost anywhere other than an Irish bar. However, this ain't your Miller Lite pitchers and green beer type of establishment my friend. There's no stupid shamrock shaped Bud sign hanging behind the bar or huge flat screen over by the Killians sign showing baseball or something. This place is a true establishment. A destination that you bring people to who don't live near Decatur in order to rub it their face in a taunting fashion as if saying "That's why I live in Decatur buddy, have you seen this whiskey list? Have you ever even tasted this bourbon?". You wanna blow somebodies face off? Take em down to Brick Store and then come over here to finish it off. For a connoisseur of libations, it's enough to start a bromance. Everything you see inside is from Ireland. The bar, the lights, the shelves, the booths.....everything (booze not necessarily included). Even one of the damn bartenders has got an Irish accent. Food is good, booze is better. Whiskey list a mile long and I seriously doubt if they DON'T have a liquor you are looking for. I like bourbon, true story. They have the biggest list of bourbons in Decatur and possible the metro area. Plus, the company I work for has St. Patty's Day off as a paid holiday (it's a long story but concludes with, we like to have fun), and for the first year in a very long time, we chose a new bar to celebrate at(bye bye Limerick, it was real). These guys welcomed us in, gave us great service, and put up with our crap (we started when the bar opened at 9:30am). Mac, I'm coming back, and more often. Did I mention the beer selection? It's awesome too. Like Scotch? So does this place.

I was so smitten with this pub on our first visit that I made it our Saturday night dinner choice. We did very well here! It was crowded but two prime seats opened up at the bar quickly. We started with the cheese plate and were blown away by the flavor pairings. The plate consisted of buttermilk blue with guinness reduction (YUM!), sage derby with candied fennel(how have I lived this long without "candied fennel"?!?!) and humbolt fog with red onion marmalade (OMGWTFSMM!) The only problem? Not enough toasts as we tried to savor tiny bites to make it last. The other problem? I would have prefered to lick the plate clean but that would have surely drawn stares. Dang. For our main we both went for the fish and chips. Hubby was "starved" and didn't want to share and I did want to try them- or one of the many other yummy choices- so when our twin plates arrived we were both blown away by the size of the fish. The cod was light- the batter was a tasty tempura style. The chips were fried wedges, well seasoned. Tarter and malt vinegar made this exactly what I needed. It was served with a way too small "taste" of cole slaw. Might be enough for others but I am a major slaw fan and it was tasty! For dessert (yes- we went there!) we had the bread pudding. While the bread was easily definable as standard white bread, the Bailey's ice cream and chocolate hidden within totally elevated this treat. We both finished off with a flight of whiskey and sweet dreams were had by all. Slaite!

This place is quite rad, even if just for the uber impressive selection of whiskey! I was there for the first time this past weekend for their Bourbon and Bluegrass event. I imagine they normally play more Irish type music but this night in particular was full of rad bluegrass and old country.. which I found to be quite stellar. I had a pulled pork sandwich which was different than I expected.. but still pretty good. The chips were delectable. I'll be going back with el duderino for sure. :D More whiskey, please.

A cool Irish pub. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable about the beers and whiskey they serve which I found to be helpful and enjoyable. They have outdoor seating which is nice in the evenings to sit and people watch on the square.

In a word: authentic. In more words: I took my good friend here who did her student teaching in Ireland, and has now pronounced this her favorite spot in all of Atlanta. This is what a true pub is...dark, comforting, welcoming, full of friendly faces, good food, and a well-stocked bar. Simple and fulfilling. Mac McGee's exceeded my expectations for an Irish pub in Atlanta.

I only dropped by for lunch, but I want to come back when I can truly appreciate this place for the bourbon and whiskey selection. I will be back and update the review for the evening experience after that. I had the soup of the day which was tasty but unremarkable. The corned beef hash with a fried egg on top was awesome, but I'd love a slightly larger portion more. Or maybe an entree sized portion.

Going to an Irish pub like Mac McGee's on St. Paddy's Day is like making the pilgrimage to Mecca during The Haj. Except in the case of the Green Holiday, a bit less religious conviction and a bit more Guinness conviction, or Smithwicks, or Bass, or Irish Whiskey...or whatever your choice of alcoholic beverage. Oh, and some stumbling and wobbling, some drunken "I love my friends!" salutations, with some cabbage and corned beef on the side. Or you could just scrap that food part, and stick with the Irish Liquid Diet. (Burp)

Two words: simplicity and service. Been here once on a Friday evening and also for lunch during the week. A good chatting spot, if you and a buddy need to catch up, without being drowned out by the crowd or feeling rushed to get a move on... Very friendly service, and a congenial crowd... Although its on the Square, it feels more like a laid back neighborhood spot.

  • Jennifer G.

First off, I really enjoyed the ambiance of the pub and the service was great. However, the food was overpriced and not very good. The serving sizes did not match the cost. The "chips" were overcooked and bland. They charge $4 for bread and butter! I was really disappointed spending so much on a mediocre dinner.

We been here twice. Both times same feeling. Atmosphere is cool, small pub. Very cozy. Food - just ok. Nothing to write home about. I had the fish ands chips which look amazing in the picture but was greasy as ever when I ate it. The waiter asked "how was it?" I told her it was a bit greasy for my taste to which she replied, "well it IS fried" well smart aleck, I've had fish fried that didn't make me feel like I drank a glass of fish grease. I was turned off by her comment the the chef took it off the bill.

  • Reba Jean B.

Agreed, the array of whiskeys behind the bar is impressive. But as far as the rest of Mac Mgee's, it fell far behind in my ratings. The food quality and prices did not match up. The service was cocky at best. It's situations like this that piss me off. If I'm gonna spend money, please make it worth my while. We were so excited about finding an Irish pub on a gloomy Sunday afternoon. What a let down, mate.

Charming space. They put together an authentic look unlike the formulaic approach that has been embraced my some of the Irish Pub chain stores that have popped up around town. Love the red door with the traditional name in Gaelic script above the entrance. The place has a nice cozy feel and the bartender was friendly, attentive and in possession of a great accent. Nice list of Irish whisky and scochy. They make their bangers and rashers in house. I had the corned beef sandwich with onion relish that was surprisingly good. Big beefy potatoes filled me up. Sweet home made bread and butter pickles made Annie happy! I like the way they are thinkin here! Irish music in the background. This is going to be a regular stop whenever we are in Decatur.

The most authentic Irish Pub in Atlanta. Super service, quite a variety of food to select from. All of it top notch! Their whiskey selection is larger than anyone's I have ever seen. They offer special flights through their whiskey menu and I have yet to get a bad recomenndation form the poeple there!. Thanks! I will be back often!

I now live in Decatur and this has become my spot. Mac's has a delicious fish and chips platter and I've tried other starters and main dishes that are mouth watering. The bartenders are servers are delightful and remember my drink as soon as I come in. This has most definitely become my favorite spot in Decatur and where I take any friends in town for a visit.

I think my score has been affected by its proximity to Twains, BSP and others. In Decatur this spot gets brightly outshined for food, beer, atmosphere...on pretty much every level it plays second fiddle to something nearby. Then again, I'm not a whiskey man.

Service was wonderful!! Mashed potatoes were creamy, decadent and mixed with peas. They were pushing the daily special a bit hard that day but I can deal. They have a huge variety of beers and spirits reasonably priced plus the room is nicely decorated. Love the booth with the doors by the front entrance. I watched them handle a large crowd with grace and humor. Not as crowded as Brick Store and I mean that as compliment.

  • Belle S.

They had good drinks for reasonable prices in this cute environment. The staff was friendly and attentive. There was a good mix of crowd as the evening progressed, however I was amazed to see several families bring their young children here. Nonetheless, I liked their drink specials and plentiful selection, including Irish drink specialties. I would come again for an easy-going place to chill.

Wow! We were surprised at how popular this place was on a rainy Friday night. The menu was surprisingly varied for an Irish pub. Wine list had plenty of good choices and of course there was more beer than I can remember. The vibe reminded me of Atkins Park, if the bar were a restaurant. I could eat there often without running out of things I want to try. I had the oyster pie ($10) . Oyster: good. Pie: good. Hubby had the lamb stew, which he found salty but I found just fine. I think it was $12 and the serving size was huge. If you go, know that this is Dccatur and if you arrive before 8, there will be kids. Choose your table carefully. I want to try the smoked fish plate when we return. Maybe the burger. Its good to have somewhere so economical and easy so close to home!

Feels much more like a pub than the Brickstore (which I love, by the way, but it can be a family spot and kid-loud) and is not quite as cavernous as the Thinking Man. The TVs were OFF!!! I was told they only have them on for important sporting events. We like that, no TV with our food. Spouse had the cod sandwich and the fries and a Guinness. He (we, I stole a few of his) liked the fries, hand cut style, not over seasoned, not too done. He tells me the fish in the cod sandwich was a "heavy fry" - a little greasy, which he likes... I had the oyster and fish chowder, a St. B's and a salad. The chowder was good, even though it was a hair salty and it came with some homemade bread. The salad had good, fresh greens, decent vinaigrette, had some edible flowers as garnish and came with a couple of baguette slices with a goat cheese topping. Dessert - the spouse had a chocolate in a pot thing with a couple of cute little scones. I had a sticky toffee (fresh out of the oven!) pudding soaked in bourbon and toffee sauce with whip cream. Yum! The food was quite edible, but not the kind of thing one craves when they aren't there.

Lovely space, although I'm not sure how I feel about all of the seating...but hell if I know what more to do with it. The food is quite good, and they obviously took pains to distinguish it from standard pub fare - not just in quality, but types - pasties, soups, really tasty thick-cut fries. For example, last night I had a Seafood Chowder which was very potato-ish, but held together well with the oysters, shrimp and smoked fish. It was "different", but without trying too hard, like me picking up high school chicks. They don't have the enormous beer lists of other local places, but it's a good selection, with Magnar's cider on tap. They also have a great array of Irish whiskeys available, which they offer in flights for $15, allowing them to circulate their selections and their customers to sample a variety. I've decided I'm over Scotch, but Irishes are relatively smooth while still carrying over their complexity. The service is friendly without being formulaic or overbearing. It has quite the contrast in feel from the Brick Store Pub and Leon's (I love both, mind you), and is different enough from The Marlay/Grange to show that Irish pubs can have different tones. What's odd is that I figured they'd do well with Brick Store overflow, but it doesn't seem to be Brick Store People. I'm still fascinated and frightened by the prospect of the Smoked Oyster pie, but I'll get around to it, I have no doubt. I also haven't tried their fish n' chips, because "Health Concerns" win out over What i Really Want too often nowadays, but companions have reported them as Quite Tasty.

I couldn't decide where to eat while walking around Decatur and saw this red door staring me down. Kinda plain outside presence so of course I was interested. Walk inside and it's like going back in time. Small, dark, intimate atmosphere with an old smell (a good one) to go along with it. Great place for a date or a small sized group. I really wanna sit in that private table area just to your right when you walk in. Deciding on what to eat was tough. I don't know anything about traditional Irish foods so I can't really comment on the authenticity but you won't see these dishes in regular Americana restaurants. I ordered the Double Cheeseburger with Stilton and Rashers (blue cheese and bacon... I googled it beforehand). Overall I was impressed with it but that's only because of the stilton cheese and bacon. The meat itself was dry... but seasoned well. I believe they cooked it way too done. I wasn't asked how I would like it prepared. The fries that came with it stole the show on my plate. Perfect crisp on the outside and soft inside. Not overly oily. Good amount of salt. Didn't even need ketchup. Also got the jerky as an appetizer. The jerky was amazing. For $3 you get 4-5 decent sized strips and they're rather amazing. Not the best I've ever had but definitely the best I've had in the last XX years. Peppery and not easily chewed. Perfect. My friend ordered the Pork Belly and Cabbage. I'm not the biggest fan of pork belly but it was good I suppose. It's just too fatty for me. But the cabbage was the best I've ever had. Heck, I even sent my compliments to the chef and asked how it was cooked. My cabbage at home never tastes like that. Damn it. I should have gotten a dish with cabbage. Next time I'm going to get the Bangers and Mash with cabbage instead of whatever else the menu said it was served with. I will definitely be back to this place. Might take that tempting whiskey flight as well.

Food was great! The Service was slower than I would have liked, but friendly and real. Meaning thats how service is in Ireland from everything that I have heard. Americans have a different view of service than the rest of the world and I can dig it. I had a nice slow date night there with my fiancee, although its not much of a date spot. This place would be perfect for a group of friends and is a really cool pub. I had the chips and curry, the corned beef tongue and the leg of lamb. All were delicious. Recommended. Authentic. If you like Chilli's don't go. If you like Chillis, stay away from me.

We stopped in on a whim and agreed it is our new favorite place. The fried cod was what we had hoped to find other places, and the squash salad was incredible. My husband loved the steak fries, and the service was excellent. We also loved the 60's soundtrack playing today - the fine music of the decade rather than the Bech Boys or Monkees. Planning our next trip and who we will take.

It's a pub okay...No big mastery here.... The good... The food, atmosphere, and location all worthy. The food took longer than usual to get out as they were clearly slammed. One of the kitchen staff offered some free appetizers to hold us over! Classy move! The annoying.. Beer is overpriced.... Few quality seats. Sharing a dinner for two on a tallboy table is well, annoying... Portions are small. If you have a potato famine appetite the portions will not exactly impress. Overall I give extra stars for atmosphere and for a cook staff that brought out something to hold us over while waiting...

I don't eat corned beef and I don't drink Whiskey, but you can't get me to stay away from Mac McGee's. It's a beautifully authentic Irish Pub with a beautifully authentic Irish staff, even the ones who aren't actually from there, because it surprises me when they don't have an Irish accent. Mac McGees has something for everyone, a full bar, a great menu - you have to try the mushroom/goat cheese appetizer - and smiles for everyone. We walk in, are greeted warmly and told, "just a sec, we'll find a comfortable place for you right away." They've never failed us. An early Spring night at one of their outdoor tables with a view of the old Courthouse and newly budding trees, an Allegash Triple and lightly fried cod sandwich with friendly, flirty service is a great way to spend an evening. Another great note - they have a couple of tv's over the bar, but they aren't on all the time...thank goodness! So you can enjoy conversation and quality time with friends without the blaring box trying to grab your attention. Another huge plus in my opinion.

updating my review because i recently returned for lunch and was blown away by the food. bangers and mash = a++ shockingly luxurious selection burger and chips = good good, chips fried perfectly and stayed crisp through the whole meal beer cheese soup + rasher tomato sandwich = is there anything better on a cold, rainy day than a pint of beer and a big bowl of rich and slightly bitter beer soup? SO happy we came back here!

Stopped in at Mac McGee's around 7:30p on Saturday night - 2 couples. The place was full when we arrived, so we ordered beers and waited for a table to turn. Although it was busy and we were standing 3 deep at the bar, the bartenders were very aware and helpful in making sure we were served. They were attentive to "traffic flow" and helping folks find room to hang. The space is pretty compact, so it fills up fast. The decor is cool and fairly authentic looking. A little nicer than the Dublin pubs I've visited...but then again it's a lot newer! Nice choice of beers on draught - although I wish they had Murphy's. Nice slow pour on the Guinness. The food was okay. The kitchen was busy and the quality suffered a bit. The food came our quickly, but the rabbit appetizer was cold. We asked if it was supposed to be hot or cold - the server indicated hot, asked if it was hot and when told it was cold just shrugged it off. The mussels were excellent as were the chips & sauce (a curry flavored brown sauce). However the curry sauce was cold as well. The fish & chips was pretty good - the fish was a little undercooked for my taste, but it was a hearty portion and seasoned well. The chips are great! Cod sandwich was good, but the salmon entree was very tiny in proportion to the other fish dishes. Great place for drinks in a friendly atmosphere. The food is good for pub grub but not a dining destination. We'll definitely be back - we liked the vibe alot. Go for the craic, not the food...afterall its a pub!

Yesterday was our second visit & this is now my new favorite bar in Decatur. Come early & sit at the bar! The staff is awesome, the whiskey selection is amazing & the food is wonderful. They make a Bloody Mary with scotch that you have to try. And the sticky toffee pudding is SO GOOD. My husband & I won't be sharing one next time. :)

I'm disappointed by many of the reviews here. Many people seem to have expected a lot more out of this pub and I feel like their expectations were misguided. Make no mistake, this is a pub. It's not a restaurant with a liquor license, and it's not a bar where microwaved food is the norm. It's a pub, a remarkably authentic Irish pub, and it's got enough food to soak up the alcohol in your belly and give you an excuse to drink more. If you're expecting life-changing great food, you're maybe expecting too much. It's good Irish food, some of it is American-ized, but it retains a deep Irish connection. (The Irish are not the French, either.) To me, it's some of the best Irish food I've had in Atlanta, and the noise level seems appropriate for the tiny size of this neat little place. They've got an excellent bar, with numerous whiskeys and bourbons and scotches and a few very good beers. If you're expecting wine, might want to check elsewhere. I'd ask why you're wanting to drink wine at an Irish pub, but maybe I don't want to know the answer. Yes, it's quaint, and you may need to get overly intimate with the strange couple next to you. No, it's not five star service, but it's a pub and shouldn't have five star service. It will be slow at times and they won't kiss your behind. Yes, the furniture is extremely old, apparently sourced from Ireland, and therefore will smell of cigarette smoke and beer and sweat. If you're expecting fine polished rosewood and white tablecloths, you're coming to the wrong place. All in all, if you're looking for a legit Irish pub experience without having to drop a grand in plane tickets, head here. Get a designated driver or make alternate transportation plans home, have a round or two of Bushmills, fill your belly with some tasty roast pork and cabbage, and enjoy making new friends as you sit on antiqued furniture. If you're expecting anything else, you'll probably not be happy.

Wow who would have thought an Irish Pub would have excellent food! My husband's tomato salad was amazingly good. We sopped up what was left of it with the bread. I had that day's soup which was really good with the lamb sandwich. Service was excellent and love how the pub looks inside. We will definitely be headed back to this place. I even told a group of ladies I go out with that we have to add this place to our list.

Mac McGee occupies a space that has been sorta cursed for awhile, but being denizens of Decatur square, my fiance and I decided to check out the bright red door that had appeared on the square on our way home from dinner at Fat Matt's. We were skeptical about the situation; an Irish pub on the square when the Brick Store and the Grange offer two great pub atmospheres already. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked into Mac McGee. The pub is warm, the bar is cozy, and although there were televisions, they weren't on. The beautiful stained glass and careful details in the knickknacks add to the ambiance. The pub has a respectable beer selection, with the usual suspects from the UK, American craft brews like Bell's, and even some good Belgian/Belgian style beers- Houblon Chouffe and Allagash Curieux! Their Irish whiskey selection is extensive and offers a variety of selections in a range of prices. After drinking several Guinness and checking out the menu, we went for some sticky toffee pudding. It is like crack. Sweet, sticky bread pudding with a brown sugar tuile, this dessert is addictive! Since then, we've become fans. We stopped by for a late lunch and dropped by at 3:30. The manager/bartender, Casey, poured us a pint and let us know they don't technically open until 4, so we waited for the kitchen to open up to try more food! The corned beef sandwich was tasty, the bread is nice and crusty and the beef is sliced thick. The housemade pickles are also tasty. The burger, with Cashel blue cheese and housemade rashers- Irish thick cut bacon- was two small patties and very flavorful. Casey told us they grind their burgers in house, so it's not surprising they're so tasty. We returned two nights later for some late-night food and managed to grab the VIP table after only a couple minutes' wait. It's a little cubby to the right when you walk in the door. There's a door that can be shut and you can comfortably fit 6 or 7 people in there. There's a little window to the bar. Apparently, in Irish pubs, women and priests had to sit in these little cubbies because they weren't allowed inside pubs. The service has always been great at Mac McGee, as has the food. They pour a beautiful pint of Guinness and when you order an Irish whiskey it comes neat. I think Mac McGee will end the streak of luck for that space.

I really liked the food here. But, since seating is limited and it's a bar atmosphere, the servers seemed a little pre-occupied and distracted. With no hosting and first-come, first-served tables, things were slightly chaotic in the dining room/bar. No big deal, but I couldn't give it four stars, because I might give it second thoughts, based upon what day of the week it is. Weekday...definately going. And our one of our two servers (Why two, I don't know, probably the bar thing, where they kind of just make rounds???) was definately Irish or something else weird like that to make the experience more authentic. :)

I now have a "holy trinity" of favorite pubs ... the Grange, the Brickstore, and now Mac McGee's. The decor is amazing; you'd swear the place has been there for decades, not a month or less. The food is terrific, far exceeding my high expectations, the staff is friendly, and the drink list is perfect. With this very solid addition, Decatur is very possibly the very best pub crawl location in all of America outside of Boston. Highly recommended.

Found this place Friday night when my lady and I tried to get into Leon's, and basically got laughed at. Not really laughed at, but told to come back in an hour. No thanks, I was hungry. Mac Mcgee's is a quaint, small little slice of Ireland, very rustic feeling, very true to it's heritage. Sadly because of that it's too small, and was packed to the walls, but we found one single open table in the middle of the walking area and sat, and were greeted quickly. Cool. Menus are nice, nothing flashy, just printed paper with laminate, low overhead. Beers on draft are plentiful, beers in bottle are as well, some are priced a bit high, others average. But that's not what an Irish pub is about, and the liquor list is something out of a dream. A total of 54 single malt scotches grace the page, which made me stiff in the pants. These are priced pretty well too, based on what other places locally charge, and they do a 'flight' every day of three select brands to try for a discount ($15 for the ones I had, priced at about $26 otherwise). They also have about 40 Irish whiskeys, Canadian whiskeys, and bourbons. This just keeps getting better. The foods all sounded good and from the looks of the table next to us, would come out good too. It did, I got a burger and fries (typical for me), she got the stew which had lamb in it, both meals were excellent. Weirdly enough about 45 minutes after we came in, the place suddenly cleared out, a good dozen people all got up at once from numerous tables and the bar and all left. Dammit, we should have waited for a better table. Seriously though, this is a really cool place, and I see it getting more and more popular as time goes on, so try it now before it's another Brickstore where you have to wait two hours to see the front door.

Why'd I get a salad? Trying to counteract the beer, I guess. Tuesday night......finally getting around to trying this place. Sadly, I doubt I'll be beating down the door to get back, with Brick Store and Leon's so close and doing a better job. The place LOOKS great and I would return to the bar, definitely. Thought the beer selections were okay --the specials board had all the high octane IPAs and double IPAs (not so Irish, but that's what I love). Had to sit at a high top table --would much rather see a few 'regular' table and more than 2/3 booths --granted, they tried to fit it all in a small space. One server for the whole restaurant, so service was pretty slow. We started with the "curry chips" for $5.....was about 1/4 of the portion that you get at Brick Store or Leon's. A GIANT ceramic dish of curry dipping sauce and tiny portion of fries. Not a good value. Fries were hot but nothing special. My friend and I both ordered the "Secret Salad", which was described as being served with goat cheese soda bread and "vegetables".......sounded kind of interesting, but was merely a bowl of greens (small bowl) with a tiny bit of shaved carrots and radish on the top (vegetables?). Two small chunks of soda bread with cheese spread accompanied. Could have eaten 3 of those......and again, same price as a salad at Brickstore but smaller. Overall, would get a high gravity beer for $5.00-$6.00 again, but will try a "pasty" next time and see how that fares, and likely only if there's no seating at Brick store.

What a great find. This place has the feel of a real pub, not the americanized ones you find everywhere else these days. Fish and chips, bangers and mash and shepards pie are all great.....not to mention London Pride ON TAP!!! Will be back for sure and I don't even live in atlanta anymore.

I've been here three times now (eaten twice), and it's one of my new favorite places to go. I'm not sure the food is authentic Irish, but it's been delicious so far. The chips (fries) are nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, well season, and addictive when served as an app with curry. For dinner, I had a decadent pork belly dish. And today I had the cod sandwich with a side salad. The fish as skillfully and perfectly fried, and I enjoyed the home made tartar sauce and vinaigrette. The alcohol selection is extensive. Besides all the Irish classic beers, they usually have a good mix of other beers on tap, including Belgians. And though I haven't delved into it yet, the whiskey collection is enormous. Plus they have flights of whiskey, so you can try a bunch! I'm looking forward to that.

Love, love, love this place. I've been here twice now and the food is a delightful leap ahead of most traditional pub food. They have a great Irish beer selection. The vibe is cozy and inviting. And to top it off, the service is friendly and prompt. A must try in my book!

I was looking forward to this restaurant based on reviews. Its the first restaurant in Decatur, GA that did not deliver. I ordered ribs of some sort. The sauce was nice enough. The ribs were slightly hard but the big turn off was that the ribs were very fatty. I expected them to be more lean based on the cost and quantity. This is all I ordered. My friend ordered the stew which was very watery and she commented the worse stew she had ever tasted. While we were just visiting this area we will definitely not be back to this restaurant again.

I've lived in Decatur for 10 years and this is my favorite pub. Hands down, Mac McGee's has the best fish and chips -- really, everything on the menu is terrific. They also have a kids menu with food my child actually likes. There are a lot of great places to grab a pint in Decatur, but if you want to avoid a wait and have a great meal you must check out Mac McGee's.

The atmosphere, food and drinks are excellent. However, don't expect the service to match the quality of food, drink, and atmosphere if you are under the age of 35. The staff have been known to not fill our orders and never come back to check on us or ask if we want a second round. Apparently the younger crowd is assumed to not have money to spend so they don't even TRY to earn a good tip or a repeat visit. We DESPERATELY tried to like this place but with such consistant bad service/lack of any service it just isn't going to happen. If you want to be treated with care/respect find somewhere else.

I went to Mac McGee yesterday afternoon with a friend of mine who was visiting from out of town. We were going to the Hawks-Celtics game at Phillips and had decided to take Marta in from the Kensington station with a stop in Decatur for lunch. We ended up in single malt heaven for a little over four hours. From Caroline, our barkeep, to the seemingly regular patrons, to every morsel of food or drink that touched our lips, we were awed and impressed. Mussels, liver pate, rashers, bangers - all inspiringly excellent. The selection of single malts and blends of different whiskeys from all over the world - nothing short of miraculous. Never before have I tasted such excellence as the Talisker 18, The A'bunadh 18 was equally as impressive, and less than a hair behind. The Manhattan and Old-fashioned, both made with a "you select" request to the barkeep were also outstanding. So impressed were we with our 4 hour lunch that we returned after the game and were hospitably greeted by one of the owners who sat and chatted with is for almost thirty minutes. Great place, great food, great customers, extremely friendly and knowledgeable barkeeps (must pass test on taste and history), unbelievably unique and special place, and nothing short of a truly miraculous selection od single malt whiskeys.

After going to Ireland on several occasions and spending a significant amount of time "researching" Irish Pubs, I think Mac McGee's captures the spirited warmth and friendly atmosphere of a genuine Irish Pub. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the decor warm and unpretentious, and the food was great and at a reasonable price. The Irish Stew was outstanding and made with lamb, the lamb sandwich was spectacular, and the fish and chips were quite good, as well. Add an exceptional draft beer selection and that was pretty close to Heaven for me! This pub is the real deal, not a chain-type wanna be. From what I heard the owner is Irish and I could feel that from the time I walked through the front door. The red facade and entryway of the building reminded me of pubs in County Cork and other small towns in Ireland. I'm headed back tonight for my fourth visit and look forward to trying something new on the menu and a new draft pint or two. I hope they get the fireplace going soon but I'm sure the warmth of the staff and all my Irish brethren will do just fine for now. Mac McGee's is the neighborhood bar we all long for and appreciate when we finally find it!

Great, great selection of whiskeys, and very knowledgable and friendly staff. The place was packed on the first night we went there, yet the bartenders made the time to answer our questions and to give us advice about which whiskeys to try. A great pub atmosphere.

When I went a couple of months ago there was this great foodie menu, but they seemed to have taken a lot of the fun stuff off it -- the chocolate pots de creme with the currant scone, the blancmange and left us with shepherd's pie and cookies and cream icecream. The choices listed on the website were not all on the actual menu. The service is great and the lamb stew was pretty good and so were the fries, but we were a bit disappointed. The menu looks much more like standard bar food than it used to. My companion and I wondered if something had happened to the chef.
