I've given this place a chance 4 times now and every time I've been disappointed. The atmosphere is trying so hard but just looks messy and dirty. The coffee tastes burnt (I've tried several) and lacks flavor. The patties are oily. The employees are fairly friendly, but not the usual smiles and warmth I generally see around town. I really want to support my neighborhood coffee shop however these issues need to change first.

It's been a couple years since I've been here, but the atmosphere was one of my favorite things here! I always loved both the decor and the spacious unusual layout. The staff was not particularly effusive, but not dreadful either. Great coffee and options. Fun events. My thing is i still remember when this cafe was the misbegotten Jupiter coffee shop which, though it had good product, was open only whenever the owner felt like it and was the size of a shoebox. Compared to that Kavarna is a great neighborhood asset.

5 stars purely for the environment - open, lots of light, quiet (for a coffehouse), plenty of tables, and fast, free Wi-Fi. A great place to get some work done.

I've been back to Kavarna a few more times, so thought I'd do some updating! The do have some healthy-ish snack options on their menu that I missed the first time I came. Sadly, they're nothing to write home about. Today I ordered the hummus. The carrots were so dry they were nearly white, the tomatoes were pale and mealy, and the pita bread was really just a cut up sandwich wrap. For $8.50? Whoa. Never again. I've also noticed that there's a really uncomfortable "cool kids" vibe here. The staff is polite, but not very friendly; when I order there are no smiles or "how are you"s or whatnot. I'm not saying a barista has to be Mary Sunshine, but it'd be nice to not feel like a nuisance. Also, their wifi is very spotty. It's frustrating! So, all in, Karvarna is a nice backup coffeeshop, but I don't think it'll be the favorite I was hoping it'd be.

Not your neighbourhood CHEERS! This is NOT one of those places where the staff goes out their way to get to know you or call you by first name. There will be no sweet pleasantries waiting for you when you walk through their doors or standing in line. Even if you think, you patronize them far often than you should. So..., buy your coffee/tea, use their "free wifi" and keep it moving. Oh and Welcome to the neighborhood!!

This reviews encompasses over 250 visits to Kavarna. I have been coming here about twice a week since it opened a few years ago (after Jupiter coffee closed). Location: I live in the Oakhurst area, so can easily walk here. It is in a great location. I know some people have commented that parking can be tight, but there is a huge, empty parking lot with plenty of space 24/7 only a block away. Ambiance: It depends what you are looking for. If you want a modern-look with comfortable couches and guys in sweater vests, you need to go to Starbucks. This place has a cool environment with more of an 'alternative' feel. The walls are concrete/brick with new paintings on the walls every month. Many of the artwork is made by staff who work at Kavarna - really impressive. There are about 15 tables (round and square mix) for seating plus one couch and a long bar with stools. There are a decent number of outlets and surge protectors along the walls for long-term computer use. Evenings: There is also a small stage at the front of the coffee shop for evening events. There are bands (and sometimes poetry or personal readings) about 2-3 times a week. Nice mix of different types of music. I wouldn't say the music usually appeals to me that much, but it all depends what you are into. Good number of local songwriters/artists. Food: There is a full menu. In the morning, there is a decent selection of muffins, bagels, scones, etc. There are a number of sandwiches for lunch including soup and salad options. The dessert selection is weak and I would love an egg/cheese/bacon breakfast sandwich in the mornings, but for a coffee shop, I think it works. Coffee: They use Batdorff & Bronson coffee (Dancing Goats). Standard drip is good. It is $1.60 a cup and if an in-house mug, you get a free refill. Cappuccino is $2.80. Their specialty coffees are also good if you want to splurge. My friend loves the iced mocha ($3.85). Their basic iced coffee is good too ($2.30). The also have a wide selection of hot teas and two types of iced tea. Other drinks: There is also a really good beer and wine menu. And, there are bottles of wine for purchase. Also a fridge w/ juice boxes, soda, orangina, etc. Staff: Everyone is reasonably friendly. I wish they would make more of an effort to get to know their customer's names, especially those of us who come in often. The manager, Sirkka, works really hard to keep things running smoothly. The owner, a lawyer who is frequently seen in the shop, is also friendly with the customers. Everyone dresses with their own "style," but it makes the place unique. The background music is also kind of random, but you could always bring an iPOD. Things they could work on: bathrooms are in need of remodeling and could be a little cleaner. They could have discounted prices/specials in the evening for the morning's leftover bagels/scones. They could have more comfortable reading chairs for when you don't need to sit at a table. Lastly, they should have some kind of customer appreciation program. As frequently as I have come, I don't think I've ever gotten a coffee on the house; a "frequent visitor" program would be cool. They did have a customer appreciation day about a year ago where they gave out free coffee which was awesome. Overall, this place is great and one of my favorite places to do work in Atlanta/Decatur. Excellent place to get your study on during the weekend, get some late night work done on weekdays (they don't close until 10pm, which is later than most coffee shops) or catch a Friday night band and drink some wine with friends (they are open beyond midnight usually on weekends).

Granted, I haven't been to a ton of coffee shops in the area, but I love me my coffee shops, in general. This is a really, really good one. First off, there's the neighborhood. How cute is Oakhurst? If you don't like what Kavarna has on their food menu, there are a bunch of little, independent restaurants scattered around the square that you can patronize. It's a quiet, low-traffic environment and I'm ready to move. But Kavarna got some pretty damn good food, so that's certainly an option. Interesting options and a lot of vegetarian options. Mostly sandwiches. They also have baked goods like cookies, some of which are vegan. Then they have beer and wine. I'm more a beer person, so that's all I've had. Very good selection. They have Peak Organic, which you don't see a ton, at $4.25 for a bottle. It's a very good IPA, but this isn't even the only good choice. Coffee's honestly not memorable, but it's certainly good. If you get a mug to stay in, your first refill is free. Wifi is good and free. Music at night usually starts around 9pm. They clear the tables from the upper part in the corner by the windows and that becomes the stage. I've been around for two musical performances. They get decent stuff. I mean, it's not just girl with a guitar complaining about her parents, it's a lot full band stuff, which is unique for coffee shops. Atmosphere is excellent. They have great music on overhead most of the time (the baristas have good tastes) a bunch of little tables on the wall (built for two, but best for one) as well as larger, round tables in the center. Additionally, there's a bar so you don't have to feel weird drinking a beer if you'd rather a bar. But, seriously, I drive from North Fulton for this place because it's worth it. It seems to be one of the few coffee shops in town that both stays open late and serves real (i.e. - not just muffins and scones) food. The alcohol is certainly a big bonus. $5 minimum on cards. Bring cash and support your local merchants.

Kavarna's one fine coffee shop! Staff is friendly and accommodating and the menu's well thought out. This coffee shop knows how to accommodate its customers. The coffee gets me going in the morning and there are many kinds of drinks to choose from. They have wine or beer for the tough days. Overall, though, a fine selection. The sandwiches are good and I like that there are plenty of coffeeshop type/eclectic options such as the grilled cheese and roasted pepper sandwich. The appetizers are good, too. I recommend the large pretzels with the grainy mustard or the tapenade plate. No, the menu is not gourmet, but it's original and fair priced, which works well when you're working on a project on your laptop and don't want to head home just yet. You can stop to order one of Kavarna's crafty sandwiches and work right through. Overall, Kavarna's got your back.

My sister, her boyfriend, and I attended Amanda's Cup at Kavarna: an event inspired by a woman who apparently ran out of the building crying when a band started playing the song to which she and her ex-boyfriend met...or something like that. The objective: to write the saddest song and bring the audience to tears. I didn't cry. In fact, I was all smiles at the drink selection, the good music, and the art on the walls, especially the painting of a woman swallowing a man's head.

I love the atmsophere of Kavarna. It's a great place to grab a coffee or tea and sit on your laptop and get tons of work done, and it's spacious enough to not feel overcrowded. Weekends are cool for grabbing a beer and catching a local singer/songwriter performance. I haven't tried the food, but maybe next weekend when I go to watch a show, I'll review it. Pros: Great coffee, chill atmosphere, spacious dining space, cool employees. Cons: It's oftentimes difficult to score a parking spot (no problem for me on a scooter, though!).

Kavarna is almost coffee shop nirvana. Go there. Drink coffee. Enjoy. It's cozy, yet spacious, and offers plenty of outlets. The coffee is darn good, though not spectacular. It's not going for the pretentious-yuppie/hipster-vibe (amen!). The staff are awesome. They rarely blast loud, grating music. The food is on the pricey side for what it is, but it's good enough. The veggie and tapenade plate is fantastic--the best thing I've had off the menu.. For some reason, there are no house-made breakfast items. I can only speak for myself, but if there were a couple of real breakfast items (oatmeal? quiche? eggs and toast), I would spend far more money there than I already do. Also, sometimes there are flocks of chatty moms who bring their obnoxious children with them (I'm not sure which group is more annoying--they both do a pretty good job of irritating everyone in the vicinity). Overall, though, the folks who frequent Kavarna are the kind of people you like sharing a coffee shop with--respectful, unpretentious, and friendly.

I'm a fan of Kavarna. I don't go there often, for I send the other half to fetch the coffee every morning down the street. I like the little place, tho. I live in the immediate area. I hate to give Kavarna or a business locally operated a bad review but it is what it is. I have been to Kavarna a total of about 6 times in the two years I have lived down the street. Out of those visits I have dumped the coffee into the kitchen sink almost all of them. I have tried iced coffee, latte, americano, and regular. Maybe I happen to be that 1% of any business that has or is the problem I don't know. I am always nice and tip very well when have gone there while I wait 15 minutes for my coffee, love the local art that is also very affordable, really enjoy the recycled wallets and bags you can buy, and they have a fantastic patio. But, why does it always taste so bad? One visit I heard a barista tell a friend/customer that she knew it takes awhile to get the coffee but unlike everywhere else their's is Handcrafted! I don't care if it's Howard Schultz is grinding the beans himself or if it's served in a Leslie Buck original, please just make it good. #yelp365 6/365

I like this place. In addition to the usual coffee shop fare, they also serve beer and wine. The staff is professional but aloof but hey - I;m not trying to make friends with them so the fact that they are a bit '''stand-offish: works for me. Parking in front of the building is very limited so I'd advise parking in the big open lot about fifty yards up East Lake Drive across from Mezcalitos.

Went to study. Ordered: - large-size "special" coffee - eh - fire roasted vegetable soup w/ garlic croutons - wow, the soup was really delicious! - grilled cheese sandwich - moisture-sucking dryness, eh - giant chocolate chip cookie - pretty good, all the pastries they have are ordered from a some bakery Clean space. Conducive to good conversations. If I am in the area, I will go again.

1 star for the food -- it was not good but I've had worse. I'm not sure why there are so many positive reviews involving the food...maybe it was an "off night"? 4 stars for the service -- friendly and helpful! 2 star average since the food was that bad. However, 5 stars to HOPE for AGOLDEN SUMMER -- absolutely beautiful music and the only reason I was at Kavarna in the first place. Unfortunately they have nothing to do with the actual business. I ordered the Aegean wrap and it was not good. It certainly was not as amazing as other reviewers made the food seem. Something tasted "musty" and the fillings were sparse (there was way more lavash and lettuce than hummus, tapendade and chicken which sucks). My friend ordered the ham and cheese wrap and a soup of the day and both pretty much sucked. There was one piece of ham and one piece of cheese on a large piece of lavash with a butt-load of lettuce in the middle. The soup tasted like it was from a frozen mix and the potatoes and carrots were not properly defrosted. The coffee was good but it's Dancing Goats so it's probably hard to mess up. I noticed a white board on one of coolers that said something to the effect of "if it fell on the floor, pick it up and wipe it off". I know it was a complete joke, but some other customers probably will not recognize the sarcasm (please be a joke) and might find it gross (the health department is probably one of those patrons). I do have to say that service was really good and friendly so that alone is a reason to visit if you're in the neighborhood.

Karvarna is what a coffeeshop should be: A hip vibe, otherworldly music, edgy staff, and conversations that run the gamut from Tibetian philosophy to Social Justice. If you are looking for a place that has that vibe, Karvarna is your spot. A couple of small negatives. The coffee is not as delicious as Starbucks, though I always get tea. Their food I think is pretty good, though certainly not cheap. The place has decent wifi speed, but it's variable and the music is very eclectic. But that's stuff is not what makes a good neighborhood coffeeshop. There are a broad variety of folks creating a community around food and drink. That's a great and awesome vibe that should be spread about.

Just moved into town and if you are into urban cafe's coffee bars this is a great shop. Popped in early in a weekday and the guys were quick with the espresso pulls. The rough hewn patchwork decor allows you to feel unpretentious and comfortable while you sit and work or hang out. Looking forward to coming back for a beer

PLEASE, if you are having a band perform, have some kind of sign or post on your web site. I have twice thought I was escaping to the sanctuary of the coffee shop, bought coffee set up and then in walks the band. Can't this happen after hours? The second time the band apologized to the table that was tutoring a child and the room full of people trying to get work done or have a conversation. It's just rude not to let people know ahead of time. I am actually sitting here as I type this looking around at the few uncomfortable people left here aside from the small table of fans (4 fans).

Kavarna is our go to coffee shop. The staff is FANTASTIC and always knows my order and goes out of their way to serve me well which I highly appreciate as a local. Their food is always on point too and very consistent which is a plus. Kavarna has a great neighborhood feel which is important to us as locals.

My favorite coffee (dancing goats) and favorite coffee spot in town. The space feels good for either work or conversation. Good natural lighting if you sit in the front half of the building. A few different seating options and table sizes, not too cramped. Usually good background music playing - nothing too intrusive or poppy, nor generic or depressing snoozefest. BBQ Tempeh sandwich, chicken balsamic sandiwich, and salad with tuna and capers = 3 tasty lunch options. I'd like to see a better breakfast option. They have some decent bagels and pastries, but I like an egg sandwich option - there's is a bland pre-wrapped thing in the cooler. Would also like to see them open a little later in the evening. They have beer and wine available - so it would make a good something-for-everyone casual, social spot when neither loud bar nor full on restaurant is really ideal.

Love this neighborhood coffee house! They have some very tasty food, and their coffee (Dancing Goats) is quite good. We've also used the space for some special events & can't say enough good about the staff and their fearless leader, Sirkka. Good place to telecommute, too. Some favorites from the menu: Chicken balsamic sandwich, Tuna sandwich with olive tapenade (instead of the cheese) is ridiculous. Love it. Their dolma (stuffed grape leaves) and hummus are good, too! Ok, now I'm going to have to run down there and grab a bite to eat :)

Laid-back coffee-lounge atmosphere with surprisingly good food! the tuna salad was awesome as well as the three goat cheeses. Service was a touch slow but not horrible. There's a little stage there too, and there was actually some decent local performances there. All-around great place... perfect for the Oakhurst vibe!

I love this place, I wish it was in Midtown. The space is large and apparently they have live music on occasion. More importantly, their coffee is great. They have a patio out in front. The only downside was parking was a little tricky the last time I headed out there. I look forward to trying their food the next time.

I have been here twice for my buddy Blake B.'s book releases and it is a pretty cool place. They have food, beer and wine, and coffee of all sorts. Don't drink that coffee stuff but people here seem to like it. Last time I went I was surprised to see the paintings my friend Jeffrey does (usually sells them on the street in L5P) prominently displayed on their walls. Wonderful! At the last event my sister and her man ordered food and had glowing reviews- one meal was a BLT on a bagel, the other was some sort of hummus wrap with all sorts of yum in it. They seem to be keen on book releases so if you have any friends needing a space to do such a thing check it out. They closed at 11 p.m., but stayed open for us long past twelve. And didn't frown at us, from what I could tell! Overall a major thumbs up for cozy atmosphere, decent location, tasty food, reasonable drink prices, and wonderful staff.

I've been to this place, maybe, 3 times. The last two were very "meh," hence the 2 stars. Two times ago, my cafe au lait took way too long to create (like, 15 mins--not an exaggeration), and today my au lait was quick, but a watered-down mess. They do carry gluten free muffins (prepackaged), so they get 2 stars instead of 1, but I've had better coffee than the last two times I've gone just about everywhere I've been for coffee in Atlanta/Decatur. Sucks to give a negative review.

I have to give Kaverna big ups for hosting Bellydance shows about every 3 months. The events are inexpensive and a lot of fun. You get to see local and regional dancers. All skill levels and all styles. Its a very warm crowd and you can't help but have a good time. I will have to review the food when I go back. I wasn't excited about the menu but I will give it a second chance.

I stepped into Kavarna late last night to support a new local band. I immediately loved this Oakhurst space, as modern, sometimes grotesque artwork covers the exposed brick walls. The house coffee blend was super-tasty, enabling me to stay awake during the show, which occurred way past my bedtime. I also found the extensive wine selection and top-notch beer choices (Chimay, for example) impressive. I'd love to return to Kavarna when the rock music isn't blaring, so I can sip a hot bev and engage in conversation.

maybe my new Decatur coffee shop. Pros: -good coffee, Dancing Goats -quieter than other local places -staff very nice -one free refill if you get a mug -free wifi cons: -sometimes they play stupid music that can be a distraction -gets packed due to people studying, etc -wifi can be slow at times due to all the people hitting it at the same time

My friend told me about Kavarna one night when we were looking for a place to meet up. We went there to watch a singer named Emily Kate Boyd. Props to Kavarna for supporting local and independent acts. All I sampled at Kavarna was a couple of glasses of wine and some hummus that another person at my table ordered. Both were good. The service was fast and friendly, though it may have been helpful that everyone at my table except for me personally knew that night's performer. I would definitely go back to Kavarna. It had a nice, artsy vibe and what food I had was REALLY tasty (and I promise you that I am picky about hummus). One cautionary note: if the place is full, I am guessing it's hard to find parking.

Great place to grab a drink and listen to some live local music. The space is great - good sized, good seating, and even an actual bar. Service laid back but friendly. Great place to hang out and plan to camp out with my laptop soon.

~Spoken with ambient music in the background~ I love Kavarna on Friday nights when my friends Strezo are playing. I love Kavarna when it's raining and I have a hot cup of coffee in my hands to keep me warm and toasty. I love Kavarna for it's location in the Oakhurst zocalo ( city center). I love Kavarna for the beer and wine they serve me when coffee just won't do the trick. (Which isn't very often.) I love Kavarna with the capital K that is it's logo. I will love Kavarna for the food (when I try it!) I will love Kavarna for the rest of my life.

Love Kavarna- mainly because I love Oakhurst. The coffee is pretty good and they have a nice selection of beer and wine. It has a great ambiance which is probably why I adore it so much. Even though I currently live Poncey-Highlands, I still frequent this place.

Oh, Kavarna, how close you are to being perfect!!! You took a while to open, and as you morphed from a video rental place and coffee shop/web consulting storefront into coffee house/music venue/wine bar, you teased Oakhurstians with promises of wines by the glass and bottle, coffee drinks, teas, and light food. Now you've opened, and you are just what you promised. You have a very mellow, inviting feel. You tempt us with several seating options, running the gamut from tiny tables big enough for four coffee cups or one laptop, to the "couchy corner" where we can sink our cabooses while we while away the hours. Clearly your owner has put some thought into the menu, offering Medterranean fare that can (or even will benefit from a) sit in the fridge. Focaccias and the soup of the day are easy to heat up without the benefit of an actual kitchen. A serious wine list, and a short but wide ranging beer list (Krusovice Dark to Schlitz tall boys) is, of course, a welcome addition. What would make you perfect, you ask? Well, though you open and serve coffee and pastries early enough to get the eager beavers on their way to work, you're clearly going for the night-owl vibe. Hosting the Decatur Sunday Night Jam sees so perfect as to feel like it's been going on for years. But is it true that you don't serve off the menu until 2 in the afternoon? I guess no greek salad for lunch for me. Also, since the breakfast options in Oakhurst Square amount to zilch, if you could figure out a way to serve some brown-sugar laced oatmeal or scrambled eggs, bacon and toast, I might not ever be able to leave. One can only hope.

My Aegean sandwich was excellent. Very tasty and fresh tasting. The Gazpacho soup had to much vinegar in it and was missing something in it's overall taste. Plus, the soup came in a normal sized coffee cup for $2.50 which was a bit overpriced. The help behind the counter were very friendly and quick service. The thing that got me was the God awful music they were playing at lunch. It was really bad electric techno club house music and it was being play quite loudly.

We are those girls who would like to order hummus by the pound and cheese plates hand over fist whilst drinking a case of red wine together. Well, Kavarna is the place for us. They have TWO kinds of hummus and some very delicious herbed goat cheeses. We ordered these as well as chicken paprika (not totally my fav but still pretty good) and a delicious grilled chicken salad with a variety of homemade dressings to choose from. We will be returning to Karvana to lounge on the patio again.

So after wandering into Oakhurst accidentally many times, I actually set out to find it today. I got lost and ended up, as usual, in Oakhurst! This place is pretty great as far as I can tell. The smiths, a couch, good lighting, delicious hot chocolate and food on the menu all the while being walking distance from pizza. And I saw someone mildly attractive walking down the streets of this small village, so she had a neck tattoo. Whatever. I used to put fake neck tattoos on all the time. Oh no....someone is coming in with an amp....I will let you know how that goes, but if this turns into a hoedown I have to leave.

Great place to hang out but they close too early. If you need a coffee after 8pm on a weekday, go to Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party on McLendon Road! They are open two hours later so you can get the java you need to work late.....

I really enjoy going to Karvana. They have a good selection of coffee and other related drinks. The regular coffee is my favorite around town. I even like the little counter that has creams, sugars, spoons, a microwave, and a toaster. They are pretty quick with getting the order fulfilled. I have stopped here by 7am and late in the evening, and it always has a pleasant atmosphere and is reliable. The food is pretty good too. My favorites are the bagels. It is usually buzzing with other patrons, but it is very comfortable. My favorite place to sit is on the old black leather couch just right in front of the register :). It would be a fun place to relax and get some work done, read a book, or do a crossword puzzle, or meet a friend. There are tables outside and is located in a fun neighborhood. There is local art on the walls, and I like the unfinished look that they have.

This coffee shop is great for people who want to study quietly all day. The music is not too loud, and there is also food available if you stay long enough to get hungry. The coffee is decent/average. What I like most is the decor and the set up- lots of spaces to plug in and study comfortably.

Great coffee and a terrific coffee shop where you can hang out all day and not be bothered or feel like you should order more just to sit there. What a coffee shop should be.

I liked this place. I've only been there once, and all I had was one iced coffee. I thought I might have issues with it, since I had read some negative reviews on Yelp. Instead I just have issues with those reviews. I've been to a lot of places in Atlanta and gotten the feeling that I would have been treated better if I had tattoos or looked more hip. I didn't get that feeling here. I was treated in a friendly way by the barista and got nothing but good vibes from the other patrons. The place was clean enough for me and the price was very reasonable, which is more that I can say for Proof, which I popped in at before going here. Kavarna was much bigger than I had imagined and it was full of people. I don't think it's reasonable to expect a place this popular to be perfectly clean. I would disagree with those reviewers who took issue with the cleanliness. Also, the wifi just worked. There was no password to deal with at all! And I like to walk, so for me it was in walking distance of the East Lake MARTA Station. I plan on going back to see some live music. The coffee was impressively delicious, and they have live music sometimes. It's definitely my favorite coffee shop in Atlanta so far. The other one I really like is Cool Beans, but it's in Marietta.

A relaxing place for your morning coffee. Along with the aromatic smell of coffee, grove amarda playing overhead. A great way to start your weekend. Limited but yummy bagels. The raisin and cinnanom bagel is yumz. Will be back again.

I went here for a music show. They are coffee with beer/wine. I only had a couple of beers and the prices were a tick higher than most other places ($3.50 for a Sclitz?). Can speak to the coffee. The sound was good for the show and they had a good amount of tables and chairs.

I won't be back soon. Space and location are great for when I work from home, but after 5 years of putting up with "badristas" I've had enough! Not sure if it's age or people of color never get even marginal service. You don't acknowledge I there and don't so thanks yet you enthusiastically embrace the dude behind me? Dancing Goat and Taproom have my business from here on out.

It's really hard for me to dislike a café, but I guess this place just isn't really my thing. It's like being anti-cat; you can't really help it. I rarely ever drop ratings because of parking--again, sometimes it can't really be helped, and I like to think that we should all walk more in this metropolitan city of Atlanta. The space is pretty open and nice, but sheesh, you'd think they could clean up this place a bit. Crumbs all over the dark, art studio-like floor, so I don't even want to imagine what I can't see at first glance. The table I was at was sticky and glancing at the others, I saw faint residues and other mysterious bits of who-knows-what. For the first half of my visit, I had no idea what I was listening to, but most of it reminded me of the old Pringles "rap" song from the 90's or the theme song of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I mean, it wasn't bad-bad, but I just found it different. The music eventually changed to punk rock (this was more me), so I guess it depends on who's in charge of the station. My experience with the staff was short and sweet. I received a greeting with a smile, a quick ring-up of my order, and I didn't have to wait long for my coffee. Prices are pretty decent since they use Batdorf & Bronson roasts. The cappuccino I ordered was deep and robust--the best part of my visit--but I can easily go to Dancing Goats instead. I'd totally change my rating for this place in the setting of a local concert/performance. This place is built as a music venue I would totally go to...perfect for an acoustic sesh. Sooo, as I finish my previous sentence, some of the staff starts clearing off tables from the one-step raised stage. Will I be experiencing this performance I've been talking about? YES! Some peeps start bringing in equipment like a subwoofer and woah...a cello. I looked up Kavarna's calendar, and it appears they have a booking for a hillbilly/country-western band later in the evening. Ehm, well maybe I'll check back next time. I'm not much of a country music kind of girl. Still, very cool that they provide music performances every so often, but my rating is based on my overall experience as a coffee shop.

Great coffee (Batdorf & Guy Whose Name is Not as Cool as Batdorf), excellent pastries (Currant scones. Someone knows what a scone is supposed to be.), good food, lots of seating, free WiFi, and great service earn top marks. You can get beans here, and they cost less than they do at the official B&B place across town; this means the "free" cup there ain't free. Parking is ample for those willing to walk a block during busy hours, there's a few outdoor tables, some space to tie up a dog (get them treats at Taj Mahound next door), and Kavarna is open late-ish, for the non-babies who like a coffee before bed. What makes Kavarna better than every other place is the live bands. Making good coffee and food is a good thing. Supporting local music is a mitzvah. Go here. Spend money here. Tip big.

  • Russell B.

I go here a lot. Most often at the end of a morning bike ride, and on Saturday with friends, or on my way back home to Decatur after a rainy drive from Marietta. Coffee is B&B. It's good. They get a huge box of pastries each morning. If you'd like a bagel in the afternoon when everyone else is sold out, this is your place. If you're into 1/2 caffe so you can drink more coffee throughout the day and not be wired, they have cold de-caffe brewed so you can get a really cold 1/2 caffe iced coffee. A lot less wi-fi obsession than some coffee shops. Plus it is funky in a good way.

Good walk up coffee in downtown Oakhurst. Has a very large seating area usually occupied with a mix of laptop warriors and moms with kids. Great for working, the lattes however are usually lacking. Depending on who is serving you sometimes get scalding hot, ready to drink, mixed well, or mocha sludge on the bottom. The coffee itself is a well known name (Batdorf & Bronson) but the baristas are all decent, but just not consistent. Not a bad cup in the morning, and it's a great space to work in, though I usually prefer to walk to Taproom in Kirkwood if I want a real smooth latte.

Our favorite cafe in the Decatur area. The coffee has been great every time we go, the seating is open and airy. Parking is actually pretty easy on the street (unlike going into downtown Decatur). Years of visiting and will keep going.

Delicious coffee, Mighty Leaf teas, great music, well-lit, ample power chords enough space for people to socialize and work side-by-side this is the best place I have found to write and work on my thesis so far. I would highly recommend. Baristas are also friendly and great at making lattes.

As a place to get some work done outside the house while drinking some good coffee, Kavarna is great. It's rarely packed, so I never feel terrible about hanging out for a few hours at a time. (I also tip heavily and buy my coffee beans here to alleviate any residual guilt.) The music isn't obtrusive, which is nice for those instances when I forget headphones. Although the service is unsmiling about 75% of the time, it's at least accurate, and it's not impolite. Also, the bathroom is always clean. As food goes, I've only eaten a prepared rollup sandwich here, and it was surprisingly good, if a little salty. They have a fairly broad menu, if you need something substantial. And about those coffee beans--they're actually Dancing Goats. And they're goddamn delicious.

This place is built for camping out with your computer, they even have extension cords! The staff was great, they closed at 8pm the last time I was there but I never felt the passive aggressive rush you normally get. The ice tea and banana nut bread was yummy! Also, because it is located in the middle of a residential neighborhood parking is abundant.

I really like Kavarna. It's warm, comfortable, and friendly. The patrons are down to earth. The menu includes all the usual coffee-oriented suspects, along with sandwiches, soups, and an array of fresh-baked goods. Beer and wine are available, along with a cooler of fruit juices and specialty sodas. Wall-hangings change regularly, and there is a regular slate of events for local bands and true-story readings.

I have given up on this place. Love the coffee, love the atmosphere, but have trouble with the internet every single time I go there. And today I watched two other people go and ask the counter about the website connection - to just get a shoulder shrug and "It says the network is up". So, hey, if you want to go chat with friends - go. If you want to get anything done on the internet - don't go. Sorry, Kavarna, but I have given you dozens of tries. A coffee house without a good internet network is like a coffee house without coffee.

I'm honestly here almost every day. It's near my house, not as near as Doctor Bombay's, but I really enjoy the coffee. They use the Batdorf and Bronson beans (same as Dancing Goats), and by the gods their coffee beverages are exquisite as a result. I am an avid coffee drinker, and thus have been to many, many coffee shops in the greater Atlanta area, but I always return to Kavarna because of convenience and atmosphere. It's a large space, and while it is sometimes crowded, there is always room to sit and get a bit of studying done, meet up with friends, or people watch. They also offer wifi, but if you can't get it to work for you fast enough, so does the city of Decatur, free of charge, and you can just hop on their network. The staff can be friendly, flighty, or frightful, but you will find that combination of personalities most enjoyable with a perfectly created mocha that runs you about the standard four dollars and some change. Something to note is that they only use two shots of espresso even in their large drinks (not the three that most coffee shops use) unless you ask for more. In short, come here if you have something you need to get done or just want to spend and afternoon hanging around reading.

Bitter trashwater coffee. Don't know how they can get good beans to taste that bad. I was desperate for caffeine, but dumped that nasty stuff. Shame because it's a cool, funky place. Watch yourself on the black couch-there's a giant hole under the cushion so your butt will sink down inches from the ground. Cheers~

The coffee itself is a well known name (Batdorf & Bronson) but the baristas are all decent, but just not consistent. Not a bad cup in the morning, and it's a great space to work in, though I usually prefer to walk to Taproom in Kirkwood if I want a real smooth latte.

Filled with douche bags. Always has been. But their iced mocha is the best I have ever had and that's saying something. Less attitude would be appreciated.

Tip big.

Cheers~

I come here all the time to get work done. Great food and atmosphere, the employees are kind and familiar. The WiFi can be spotty at times but it's never been an issue for me. Go for lunch sometime! The balsamic chicken sandwich is super satisfying.

This coffee shop is great for people who want to study quietly all day. The music is not too loud, and there is also food available if you stay long enough to get hungry. The coffee is decent/average. What I like most is the decor and the set up- lots of spaces to plug in and study comfortably.

It does throw me into an older and cooler time that used to exist in Athens, as mentioned below about the college feel. I like the mix of coffee, wine, beer, food - especially in Oakhurst. This is such a cool lil place in Oakhurst and the community should be thankful.

Too many flies buzzing around. ... Not a good sign. How can one relax, when one is constantly annoyed by flies??? Please clean this place up!!!

I gave 2 stars only because the shop is cute and I love the local (and AFFORDABLE) art for sale, but the coffee is weak at best. My iced coffee seriously tasted like coffee-flavored water. Yuck!
