Osaka Steak and Sushi is a new Japanese steakhouse and sushi restaurant that opened April 2015 on Buford Highway in Cumming. This Buford Highway (State Route 20) is not to be confused with the Buford Highway in Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties (State Route 13). This is Osaka's second location. It's in the same shopping center as Publix (Cruse Marketplace). The original is located on Georgia 400 in Dawsonville near the North Georgia Premium Outlets. Due to the popularity of the first location, the owners decided to open this second location to be closer to those customers who live further south in Forsyth County and the surrounding area. All-around, this is a pretty solid Japanese restaurant, especially in these neck of the woods. It's more than a just a Japanese steakhouse. The sushi menu is vast (the sushi bar stocks an above-average selection of fish and seafood) and there is an assortment of non-hibachi and non-sushi items including noodles (udon, yakisoba), bento boxes, terikyaki, katsu (breaded and fried meat cutlets), tempura, and desserts. The alcoholic beverage selection is extensive as well with beer, wine, sake, Japanese plum wine, and mixed drinks like martinis, mojitos, margaritas, daiquiris, and various other cocktails. The sum of offerings is ambitious, but the kitchen and bar execute and the quality of food and drink is good. Osaka has 10 hibachi grills that can seat a total of about 100 guests. If you're not ordering hibachi or don't like the smoke, there's non-hibachi seating (both indoor and outdoor) too. Total capacity is about 150. Osaka has taken over the space formerly occupied by Ninja Steakhouse. The owners put a lot of money and effort into renovating the space. It looks nice and feels clean, sparkly, and new. Unlike a traditional Japanese steakhouse such as Benihana, Osaka feels more modern, open, and stylish. The atmosphere is casual and the talented hibachi chefs make things fun. This is a great place for birthdays, special occasions, and group outings. Expect to spend roughly $5-12 each for most salads and appetizers, $8-23 each for hibachi entrees, $10-14 each for noodles, $8-12 per rice plate, $10-12 per bento box, $8-24 per tempura entree, and $3-6 per dessert. There are a staggering 50 different kinds of sushi rolls, priced between $6-15 per roll, plus hand rolls, chirashi sushi (assorted sashimi over rice), and over 20 different kinds of nigiri and sashimi. Lunch specials are available. I've had both the steak and sushi here and can't say I've had a bad thing. On the steak side, I tried the "N/Y Steak" solo plate with fried rice and mixed vegetables. I thought this entree was delicious. While I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare, it actually came out at more of a medium. It turned out fine though, because the meat was still tender and juicy to my liking. The steak was cut into bite-sized pieces and came with two dipping sauces. The steak was flavorful enough on its own to where I thought the sauces weren't needed. The mixed veggies consisted of broccoli, onions, mushrooms, and zucchini. The fried rice had carrots and corn in it and may have been the best part of the plate. The rice was addictively tasty. On the sushi side, I've tried the following rolls and nigiri: Rolls: * Sushi Fever - soft shell crab, shrimp tempura, avocado topped w/ tuna, salmon, white tuna, & spicy garlic ponzu * Osaka Roll - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fish cake, avocado wrapped in cucumber, topped w/ ponzu * Sexy & The City - ahi tuna, cream cheese, avocado topped w/ ahi tuna, mango, avocado, eel sauce * White Tiger - spicy tuna, avocado, cream cheese topped w/ chopped scallop, fish cake, spicy mayo, eel sauce Nigiri: Conch, eel, kuro tobiko (black roe), mackerel, octopus, salmon, scallop, smelt roe, surf clam, tuna, escolar, yellowtail, and otoro (fatty tuna belly). While I typically prefer nigiri and sashimi over rolls, the rolls were actually quite tasty. The fish was fresh and the rolls were filling. Sushi Fever was a special when I had it. It was advertised on a chalkboard next to the sushi bar. The Osaka Roll is terrific if you want a lighter, more refreshing sushi roll. It's wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed and rice. The White Tiger roll got its name because the outside of the roll resembles the striped fur of a white tiger. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the nigiri, not only in the quality of the fish, but in the quality of preparation. The sushi chefs use big, thick, succulent slices of nigiri. They are generous with their cuts. The nigiri is reasonably priced at $2-3 per piece. Osaka even had otoro, which is a special cut of tuna belly, for only $7 a piece. A lot of sushi restaurants in Atlanta charge over $10 for a piece. Other recommendations: * Agedashi Tofu - lightly breaded fried tofu served w/ tempura sauce, bonito * Tuna Tataki - thin slices of seared tuna served w/ cucumber, avocado, orange tobiko, & ponzu Service is excellent.

This is a special place for us to celebrate. The sushi is excellent and more high end. The service is prompt, courteous and attentive.

Not impressed. We went here because the reviews were so much better. Our waitress was very diligent at first. But once we got our food we literally never saw her again. We sat at the hibachi bar but it turns out they cook everything in butter (dairy allergy) so they had to cook our food in the back. It came out burnt and about half the portion size as you normally get. The manager informed me it was actually a larger size but it definitely wasn't. We won't be going back.

We had dinner at one of the regular tables (not hibachi). Our $10 hibachi shrimp dinner included soup and salad, and came with fried rice; vegetables were an extra $1. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was very good and knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. The decor is pleasant and modern. The food was fine, but not outstanding. The miso soup was, thankfully, not salty, but also a bit uninteresting. I wish restaurants would offer a more nutritious salad than iceberg lettuce; this is not a knock specific to Osaka; everyone else is the same. You have to temper the luke-warm review of the food quality with the great value that their menu offers. Further, the decor is nice and the wait staff we experienced were great - knowledgeable, professional, even welcoming. We will definitely be back.

We sat at the sushi bar. Great service and delicious sushi. My husband is a huge sushi fan and he loved all three of the rolls. He got a martini and I had saki, both were good.

Ron is back! Osaka is where Ninja use to reside. After Ninja closed, I have tried several of the other Hibachi places, settled on one but it was always hit or miss. Osaka's interior is much more intimate and modern. The quality of the meats was much better. Our chef cooked everything to perfection. I had tuna and salmon nigiri, well done and great flavor. Hibachi: The portions seemed a little smaller than I am use to but the prices seemed lower and the quality better. No shrimp appetizer - oh well. Sushi: TBD, the little that I tried was great and I can't wait to saddle-up to the sushi bar. Nigiri is priced per piece vs. two. I hope the chef is personable, like Michael (Ninja). Service: Waiter - place is relatively new, they seemed a little under staffed at the wait position. Our waiter while polite, had several mix-ups forgetting requests, e.g. drinks. Nothing critical but annoying. I expect time will fix either through experience or attrition. Ron was the manager of Ninja for years. He had left Ninja sometime prior to is closing. It's probably been four years yet he recognized many of his old patrons. He makes you feel at home, like it is "your place". I did not met the new owner(s).

I've been going to hibachi since I can remember, quite literally. I had more than one birthday while growing up at a place called Misono in Roswell that I believe is closed. Osaka beats them all for (perhaps not super authentic and a little westernized but yummy) hibachi and sushi. I knew the Dawsonville location well so my family tried this location too. I like the decor here. The biggest draw is the food and price. I LOVE their potato roll and I'm not a big seafood fan at all. The ginger dresing can make or break that usual salad you get at these types of places; I want this one bottled. I have become addicted to their steak and chicken hibachi. IT'S ONLY AROUND $11!!! Sometimes I find hibachi places have bland chicken and steak but this is no lie the best I've had. They really have great prices too. My family is big on seafood/sushi and also some of the pickiest people I know. They are now loyal customers! I will say there was a seemingly new or forgetful waiter, but he was polite and trying so it didn't really impact my experience. Can't recommend this place enough (Dawsonville or Cumming locations)! Also, the owner is nice.

First off, the food was good. Nothing fantastic, but good. The service, however, was awful. We had been sitting for 10 minutes before I gave in and had to find somebody to take our drink orders. It was then 5 minutes to get our waters. We made our order and received the standard soup and salad - ginger dressing was bland store bought stuff. My wife got her sushi roll fine, but my nigiri was nowhere to be found. We waited another while before I again had to ask for help about checking on our dinner. I was asked what we ordered once and a few minutes later, asked again. We were then brought out another soup and salad - seemingly because our order had to be put in again. After being at dinner for an hour now, I got my nigiri - on a dirty plate and smeared in the wasabi that was put on the plate. Dinner finally arrived about 10 minutes after, with fried rice when we ordered steamed rice. Every table around us had issues of the same sorts. The grand opening is going to be a grand closing before they know it. After all this, there wasn't even an offer of discount or an apology. All we were told was the kitchen was backed up yet the table next to us ordered 30 minutes after we did and were done eating by the time we got our food. Won't waste my time here again and I know of 7 other groups that won't either.
