Fantastic! This was my second trip here this year and the food is AMAZING!! The staff is very, very friendly and very accommodating. Best dishes are the Beef Medallions and Walnut Shrimp. The Kimchi side was fantastic as well. And don't forget the chocolate dipped fortune cookies at the end. We asked for more and our server wrapped some up and gave them to us. Very nice! We will definitely return every time we come to Atlanta ?

Came here with friends. Was not crowded. It was close to our hotel. Order the Shantung and duck dumplings as appetizers. Inform the waiter/waitress that you will be sharing your dishes so that they bring you plates for everyone in your party. Try these entrees: pan fried noodles Hong Kong style, General Tsu's chicken, Pork Medallion and the Walnut Shrimp. We were happy customers! They also have a full bar.

I don't get the love for this place, but I don't get the hate for it either. It's alright. Honestly, it would have been a 2-star kind of deal, but the service was SO good that I would feel wrong leaving it at 2. It's expensive for what it is. I have no problem shelling out for food that earns it, but this place does NOT. It came out quickly, but the ingredients didn't have the same freshness I'm used to from other places in this price range. I had the Walnut Shrimp; after reading in reviews that these are the same people who used to run Silk (my total favorite place ever), I was so hopeful that this would be the same Walnut Shrimp from Silk. It was not. I was sad. :( The sauce was too heavy on the lemon and could have stood to be a little thinner. My dining companion had the Pork Medallions Peking-Style, and it was bland and kind of uninspired. It just wasn't special. The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly, but it couldn't save the mediocrity of the food. It wasn't BAD. It just didn't warrant the price, and it wasn't memorable or special. The decor is a little cheesy, but it's fine. ~I~ personally wouldn't come here again, but it's not a place I would tell you to avoid. I just think you can do better.

Ordered takeout unfortunately they do not deliver. The staff was very friendly when I was picking up the food. The food was ready when I arrived which is a plus. For the price the portions for takeout are not generous. We ordered egg drop soup which was good. The spring rolls were delicious. The shrimp fried rice was very good. The beef with broccoli cost 17 dollars and some change. I was disappointed with the quality of this dish. The beef was soggy like a sponge and the sauce was off. The broccoli was very good and this was the only plus about this dish. The best part is the fortune cookies are dipped in chocolate. I give this restaurant three stars!

This place was opened by the same owners as Pacific Rim and (now closed) Silk. You will see some similarities in their menu and style, but obviously Hsu's is Chinese food versus Japanese/Sushi. While dinner and main entree prices tend to be a bit on the high side (I guess they can charge more since it is "gourmet" and located downtown), lunch prices are very reasonable. I recommend a lunch special which comes in a bento style box with choice of entree, fried or steam rice, salad with ginger dressing (yum!), and crab angel. All this for only $8 or $9! Not bad at all. The salad was fresh, ginger dressing delicious, fried rice standard, and main entree good. I got the mongolian beef, and it was a little salty, but the salad helped cleanse my palate. Host and waitstaff were very nice and effecient, especially for a busy lunch. Our drinks were constantly refilled and dirty plates collected swiftly. The atmosphere is dim, but nicer than your typical Chinese restaurant.

I'm so glad that I found Hsu's while visiting Atlanta last week. The place that I had chosen, close to my hotel, was closed down, so I quickly found Hsu's and headed there. I was a bit worried when I walked in because the place was empty at a little after 6pm. The decor was smart, but a little dark. I got a drink and my order was taken quickly. The hot and sour soup and walnut shrimp were delicious and every bit as good as anything I've eaten on the West Coast. About ten minutes after I walked in the place was full. Several large parties arrived while I was there. I enjoyed a leisurely meal and could see that Hsu's really have their act together. They coped superbly with the large parties. I've seen a few reviews that say it's expensive, but it didn't seem so to me, especially given the excellent quality and taste of the dishes that I tried. The servings were generous and each plate would easily have been enough for three or four people if they were sharing several of their favorite dishes. I'll definitely visit Hsu's again and I very much hope that other readers will have as good an experience there as I did. I'd award it five stars if the lighting was a little more modern and slightly brighter. The food is definitely worth 4.5 stars. I'd have to eat there several more times before deciding whether or not to rate it a 5. One minor detail impressed me - the kitchen ornament that held a spoon, fork and chopsticks. It really depresses me when I have to ask for chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant. Hsu's caters for people like me and those who are happier with a fork without any hassle. Thank You for that little touch.

This place is apparently an institution in downtown Atlanta. If you're in the mood for decent Chinese, Hsu's is a good choice. The service, atmosphere, and food are all very good. However, they might over-do it a little with the sauces. Still, if you're looking for a decent Chinese food fix downtown, give it a shot.

Hsu's is amazing. Been there twice for dinner. Both times the manager and staff were so friendly and helpful in every way. They're really genuine people and the food is very good. I appreciated that they went above and beyond to accommodate my special/custom requests. You have the option of eating at the bar (on one side of the restaurant), or being seated in the dining area (on the other side). If you're in the neighborhood, don't think twice about stopping by. You'll be glad you did...

I've been here a handful of times and this place is solid. Good food, but nothing to write home about. The service, however, is what will keep me coming back. It's always busy at lunch time but I've never had to wait for service...admittedly, I go to lunch later than most, between 1 and 1:30. The best thing about the place is the service. The staff is friendly and prompt. The host/hostess is always cheerful, and not that phony kind of cheerful you get with a lot of hosts. The food is pretty run-of-the-mill Chinese. I love the lemon chicken and the General Tso's chicken, which is tolerably spicy for me (and I'm a huge wimp with spicy stuff). Their crab angels are delicious! I'm a big believer in good service, so while the food is decidedly 3 stars, the consistently good service I receive here results in 4.

Solid restaurant, nothing to jump over the moon about, but I would certainly go there again and recommend it to others. I debated rating it 4 stars, but I'm not quite there. I really liked their Beef With Flat Rice Noodles (aka Beef Chow Fun, Hefen), which as far as I can tell from their online menus, is only offered for lunch. This is a really popular Cantonese dish, although I don't know that Americans realize it's so good, because the title isn't terribly exciting. Anyway, I'm always happy to find a restaurant that makes it well. Hsu's version is too salty, and not THE best I've ever had, but it's still delicious. It's a full-flavored dry-sautee jumble of soft, thin, strips of flat rice noodles with moist, tender beef (probably thanks to MSG but whatever! The result is so delicious) with a little dark green onion and crunchy bean sprouts. Mmmmmm, meat and carbs! Generally service is very nice! The only rub was that the server brought me the wrong dish, which I wasn't too pleased about for the following three reasons: 1) I'd actually had a conversation with the waiter when ordering about the particular dish I wanted 2) No apology (I mean, not necessary, but it makes it better somehow) 3) The wrong dish looked kind of gross... I'm not all that picky and would've just eaten the wrong dish, in the interest of time, but this just looked like black goo. I liked that Hsu's has spring rolls, not egg rolls. Spring rolls are authentic - egg rolls are not. Granted, I actually PREFER egg rolls (I love the extra dough), but I know spring rolls mean the restaurant will have more authentic food overall. The decor is fine, I think it's pretty, sure maybe it's a little cheesy as other reviews have said, but no more than any other Chinese restaurant in America (minus parts of Los Angeles and San Francisco, although even those cities have their share of "cheesy" stereotypical decor). You know what, you're in America, it's fine to over-emphasize your culture. The only worrisome or potentially pretentious thing I noticed was that they describe their Walnut Shrimp (aka Honey Walnut Prawn, Honey Mayonnaise Walnut Shrimp, etc.) as being in "lemon aioli sauce." Um, it's a classically delicious dish that is generally made with mayonnaise. Either the chef is extra inventive, which when it comes to this particular dish is not a great thing (don't fix what ain't broke), or they think aioli sounds classier than mayonnaise (which okay yeah it does, but aioli necessitates garlic and garlic has no place in this dish... not to mention aioli is more of a Mediterranean thing anyway). Sorry, I couldn't seem to control my rambly-ness today. And despite all my ranting, I do recommend this place when it comes down to it!

This was our first visit to Hsu's. we were visiting from Nashville and hungry for good, authentic Chinese and gave it a try. So very glad we did. This was some of the best cuisine we have had in ATL. The service was excellent, the atmosphere clean and elegant, and the food outstanding and fresh. We had the walnut shrimp, pineapple fried rice, and general Hsu's chicken. All three were great but the walnut shrimp is a must try. Great sauce and the shrimp was fresh. We will certainly go back to this hidden gem in downtown ATL

2nd visit to ATL for work-related meetings. Disappointed by the local food scene, yet again. We had our group dinner at Hsu's, close to the hotel where we were staying and attending a conference. Given the large group in a private dining room, the restaurant staff kept themselves busy throughout the evening. But the speed at which our foods came out seemed disproportional to their busy-ness. Once out, the food tasted good, but not spectacular. Overall, it was a "meh" dinner experience. Thank goodness for the fun company at least.

A solid 3.5 stars from me, almost 4 stars. It's a white-table dining establishment, and it threw me as soon as I entered. The food's straightforward and fresh. We had: - the vegetarian lettuce cups (nice crunch from the water chestnuts) - the fried tofu with vegetables and - the Tso's chicken and had them saute instead of fry the chicken, which was a lame decision on my part because the whole time I was eating it I was wishing it was fried. My bad. Still, great flavor. What threw me too? The prices! $15.95 for Tso's chicken! $7.95 for the lettuce cups! Really? The quality was definitely there (though the chicken was questionable), especially on the vegetables, but why the high prices? I guess the ambiance? The formal dining service? I dunno. Not a bad place to eat downtown though when you're STARVING and need Chinese food. Beats Hooters up the street!

This is a pretty good place, and caters to the business crowd. You get seated quickly, and the food is better than pretty much all the other Chinese places in the surrounding area. That said, it's a bit on the pricey side, but again, catering to the business & tourist crowd at PeachTree Center, it's nothing uncommon for the area.

I love this restaurant! This is the second time I've been here, both times at Dragon Con, and they are fantastic! They are so gracious and efficient while being swamped with conventioneers, in all manner of costume, even though this seems like it would normally be a dress up (more formal clothes) place. The decor is subtle, tasteful and pretty. They are incredibly accommodating. And, importantly, the food is great! I ordered the salmon with ginger sauce, which was superb. The duck dumplings and General Tso's chicken were ordered by my friends, and were great also. The only downside is that they are not open for lunch on the weekend, so plan accordingly. Also the food is more pricey than average Chinese cuisine, but it's a great deal for the quality, so you absolutely get what you pay for. Highly recommended!

I came here last Thursday with my girlfriend while she was on lunch. The service was prompt and friendly, overall. The food was very fresh, with considerable amounts of freshly-made food, as opposed to the prepackaged stuff you frequently find at such places. So why the low rating? Well, first, it starts with the fact that when we walked in, the manager said hi, and my girlfriend told him that we were having lunch there and that she wanted her usual. She was under a time crunch, and wanted to get them to go ahead and put her order in. I didn't know what I wanted. While normally, I would not consider them holding her meal while waiting on my choice a problem, in this case, it was one. Additionally, I wasn't terribly happy with the food, but that may simply have been my choice of meal. Ultimately, I wasn't overly impressed. I'll probably come back at some point, but I wasn't overall impressed with the location.

I'm originally from San Francisco and is this is the closest to Americanized "California" chinese that I have ever had in Atlanta. The prices are expensive but that is expected for the area where the restaurant is located. I would recommend this as a place to go for lunch when you dont have to pay the bill yourself.

I don't really get all the hate for this restaurant. Is it Americanized? Probably. Is it equal to the Chinese food you can get out in California? Haven't tried it, but I doubt it. Is it even as good as my favorite Atlanta Chinese restaurant? No, it's not. And by the way, go try China Inn in Chamblee. :D This isn't the best Chinese food in Atlanta, but my experiences here have not been bad, either. I find the decor amusing and I'm not sure why people are saying it's pretentious. What is it supposed to be pretending to be? The dining selection in this area of downtown Atlanta is REALLY sparse for some reason. I only know this because I've stayed at the Hilton on Dragon*Con weekend before. If you are staying in this area of town for a business trip, I feel sorry for you because you aren't going to get a good sampling of what Atlanta food has to offer. Hsu's, Trader Vic's, and Durango Steakhouse are (sadly) about the best you're going to do in the Peachtree Center area. But Hsu's really isn't bad. The food I've had there is tasty and the service is always polite. I just wish it weren't the only decent option in the area. (Granted, I have only been there for dinner, so I have no idea how good - or not good - the lunch there is.)

I frequently get General Tso's chicken, because it is delectable. The chicken is fried to perfection and the sauce is the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. I work near the restaurant and the boss sent me out for lunch today. Hsu's is basically an old school American Chinese restaurant. The decor is nice, I might try it for dinner this weekend. Granted I was there for takeout, but this illustrates the service. I showed up to get lunch for two people, one of the orders was very specific with substitutions, that was no problem. I had to add another with very specific instructions while waiting on the first two and they gave me a drink and had it ready within 2 minutes. Very fast, very friendly. I had the house special lo mein with scallops, chicken and shrimp. The ingredients are fresh and it tastes great. The shrimp is great - not overcooked, but just right. I took a peek at the other reviews - I don't think Hsu's or Atlanta in general is trying to be like New York. So, food was very good, service was excellent. And you can find other vegetarian dishes by asking for Tofu in lieu of meat. I liked this place a lot and will go back soon. Your options for lunch in this spot of downtown are pretty limited unless you want fast food or crappy tourist food and Hsu's is a decent choice in my opinion.

I have worked downtown for more than 3 years and this is the first time I have been to Hsu's and it 75 feet from my building. First, I went there for lunch and it was crowded and by the time I left there was a wait. So if you plan to go, go early. The menu has typical Chinese food items, so no surprises here. The food came out fast, service was good, although it was crowded. I wasn't overly impressed with the food, but it wasn't bad. I would it put it on the same level as other similar Chinese restaurants. Unfortunately, downtown has a glut of sub-par/ok places to eat and Hsu's falls into the ok category.

This is 3.5 stars. (Yelp is really weak in Atlanta reviewes...try Citysearch for more places.) Atlanta isn't a particularly sophisticated city so a hodge-podge of steak houses, with Tex Mex, Hard Rock and Hooters is what I had to choose from near my Wyndham hotel downtown. I checked out Hsu's as the only Chinese place nearby. I knew what to expect - slightly overpriced Chinese food for (non Asian) corporate America. That's what I got. Nothing special about this place - except I've never seen stuffed squid on the menu before - I tried that and it was excellent...a little picante and pickled cabbage and mango side dressing. My Lo Mein was simply fried egg noodles. A little chilli sauce spiced it up. I ate it all, I was hungry! Washed down with a Tsing Tao beer it came to $28 plus tip, courtesy of my company. Ta!

Was there today at lunch. Horrible customer service. Near closing, they bunched all the customers into the back wall. Wishing to unwedge myself from a family with small kids and a foursome of teenagers, and since the place was nearly empty, I asked to be moved. At least three people told me no including the manager because they were about to close in a half hour and wanted to ready the restaurant for dinner....during lunch mind you. Then at 225 pm, they inform me in a rude manner that the kitchen is closing in 2 minutes. The food is mediocre by any decent cities standard for chinese(San Fran, NY) so why deal with this attitude? Choptix in Buckhead is far superior. Hint to the management. When you are more concerned with closing or making life easy for your staff in a way that pisses off the customers then its time to hang up your wok. You are in the service business. Food can be had anywhere.

The concierge at the Marquis Marriott recommended Hsu's as one of the best restaurants within walking distance from the Hotel. The recommendation was right on target! The food was rich with flavor. I travel to Atlanta for work about once a month and usually eat at Hsu's if I'm staying anywhere near downtown. I love Hsu's, but I don't particularly like giving out 5 stars if the food isn't mind-blowing, and no, Hsu's is not the absolute best Chinese food I've ever had in my life, but here's what got it to 5 stars: -The food is great - I've always been happy with my orders. Tonight I got beef satay (a staple) and fried tofu with vegetables. The vegetables were probably the freshest and best selection I've ever had in a Chinese dish: asparagus, broccoli, pea pods, carrots, corn, mushrooms, onions, and more. I asked for them to use a garlic sauce. Delicious. -I love their beef satay. It was the only restaurant food that I wanted to eat during my first trimester. I've tried to find one as good on the west coast and the east coast and have only found a few that come close. -Their service is great -- the staff remembers me, the food comes out fast, and they've always seemed very kind and accommodating, whether dining in or taking out. -I've actually chosen to stay downtown instead of near the airport partially so that I can eat at Hsu's. This place is really good, and certainly my favorite in downtown. And, it's open 5-10pm on Sundays, despite what yelp claims.

Mediocre Chinese, at best, for the downtown corporate crowd. Not that I was expecting wonders -- sorry, Atlanta, but New York you are not -- but I was disappointed nonetheless. Egg rolls? Bland and rubbery. Wonton soup? Too much salt, guys. And the kung pao chicken? It had absolutely no kick to it. The decent beer selection was about the only thing that redeemed my lunch here. Well, that, and the fact that I expensed it to my company. You're better off walking a few blocks north to the Mandarin House II -- sorry, driving, because nobody walks in Atlanta -- where you'll at least get a mediocre buffet for your money.

We went to Hsu's with a group of 10 this weekend, and it was surprisingly great. Downtown Atlanta restaurants are usually not very good, so I wasn't expecting much, but Hsu's was better than any Chinese I've had in Atlanta recently. We had the "stuffed lettuce" or what I'd call lettuce wraps -- yum. Shrimp with walnut sauce -- way yum. Pork tenderloin in "pungent" sauce (that word is a little scary on a menu, but we gave it a shot) -- delicious! I tried other dishes, too -- including some delicious sesame chicken. The service was great -- friendly, funny, and they did separate checks even though the menu said they wouldn't. I'd happily make the trip back downtown to have dinner here!

I was in the neighborhood for a 3-day conference. The restaurant selection in this neighborhood is not great. I ate at Hsu's every night, and I loved it. I got the Cantonese Style eggplant with chicken, and the Szechuan Style green beans with chicken. They were both absolutely delicious. I love that they dip their fortune cookies in chocolate! I can't compare this to other restaurants in Atlanta, because I've never been to any other restaurant in Atlanta, but I can compare it to Chinese restaurants in other cities (mostly Boston and Washington DC) and it was definitely well above average. I wish I had this place in my neighborhood!

I've been dragged here for lunch with various friends five or six times in the last couple of years. The food is very pretty, but somewhat overpriced, in my opinion. The decor is "black laquer chic". My biggest complaint is this: How can a Chinese restaurant only have one vegetarian dish?! There's not a single meatless appetizer or soup, either. Granted, the mixed vegetables with tofu IS pretty tasty, although it's not really a substantial amount of food (at least at lunch) and they tend to use the big, tough asparagus pieces. However, I asked a few days ago if I could substitute noodles for the rice (just to have SOME variety) and was told absolutely not!! Another time, a friend wanted to make a simple switch on his order and was told "no", as well. Now, I'm not picky, but I often ask for menu substitutions at restaurants and I have ALWAYS gotten what I wanted. Some restaurants add a small extra charge, which is fine, but I've NEVER been told "no". I will not "vote" for this restaurant again when I'm eating downtown with friends.

I had Hsu's for the first time today and wow, was it good. The staff recognized my coworker and greeted him by name which says something about the level of service they give. It was packed out since it was lunch, but we were still seated promptly. I ordered the asparagus with black bean sauce and shrimp. I don't think I've ever seen that size shrimp served at a Chinese place before, and they loaded the plate up with them! My coworker had the seafood soup and said it was delicious. I would have given this place 5 stars, but for two things: noise level (there were a lot of tables packed in together so it was loud) and the diet coke was a little flat. Otherwise, A+. Will be taking friends there soon for sure!

HaSues?! Sues?! Whatever the name, what enSUED was a foray into flavor town. 2 appetizers to make a meal with a bowl of fried rice. I was looking forward to the duck dumplings but it was my afterthought of fried Calamari that stole the show. Lightly fried in a tempura batter, the squid was tender & delicious, but the ginger sauce it was served with.......OUTSTANDING! It was bright & citrusy a total 180 degrees from marinara. For that I was grateful. The duck dumplings had a plump pocket of moist duck & vegetables, quite flavorful on their own, the sauce just enhanced it. The fried rice although it looked bland, it actually had a nice flavor profile with just the eggs and scallions. Happy I took the walk down the road. Staff was top notch, I can't see how anyone could complain about a meal or service here. Friday Update. Yes I went back again. And we ordered some spring rolls which were better than other spring rolls I've had, plus we ordered the duck dumplings & Calamari againDON'T JUDGE ME! I'm in a foreign state with no time in between meetings to really travel far to try other places. But shout out to my waiter JUSTIN who was fun, funny, & helpful. He tried to talk me out of getting the Shantung Black Noodles because he didn't think I'd like it only the "Asians" order it.......A LOT! Silly youngster now I really want it. And it was the perfect choice. It was awesome! Noodles with scallops & beef or was it shrimp & pork in a black bean sauce. Justin wasn't sure & I didn't care, it was Licious! My mom would take away my Asian card if she knew I liked this place. Hsu's is the definition of classy American Chinese food. There's no smell of grease lingering in the air as you walk in to pick up takeout, or the fear of food (coloring) poisoning. Catering to the downtown lunch crowd, Hsu's has a combination lunch that comes in a cute little bento. Rice, entree, crab rangoon (crab angel), and a small salad for $10. Even their entrees are a good deal, $8 - $15 for a sizable portion. Everyone I know loves the seafood noodle soup (jambong). I've tried the basil chicken and beef. While they are named the same, they are prepared differently. The basil chicken is actually more of a black bean sauce chicken. It comes with green peppers. The basil beef is not as dark and comes with snap peas instead. I didn't care for the beef much. It was a bit tough and rubbery. The meal ends with a fortune cookie... Dipped in chocolate. I would eat so many of these if they sold them individually wrapped.

So it feels like the stars have aligned when some of the best Chinese food around is downstairs from your office. This is a lunchtime favorite for the office and because we live close-by we come here for drinks some Friday and Saturday nights. Kenny is a gem! The black noodles are delicious, side note: must like onions. My favorite dish is the Szechuan Style String beans with shrimp. If you have time and are in the mood they are definitely worth the trip.

I was here for Dragon*Con dinner with friends. It is a bit pricy for Chinese food in my opinion, but you pay for what you get. I ordered the String Beans Szechwan Style with Beef. It was really great. Some of the best Chinese food I have had. It was also an ample serving. I don't recall what everyone else ordered, but it looked great and everyone left happy. I will likely make another visit this fall. I would likely order the same dish again. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :-)

Very nicely decorated, classy restaurant with very good and fairly authentic food. The hot and sour soup was excellent. Lettuce wraps were so-so. The Peking pork was excellent, as was the XO shrimp. The Hong Kong style pan fried noodles were very good. String beans Szechwan style could have been a bit crispier but were definitely tasty. The chocolate covered fortune cookies were a nice touch. The staff was efficient and friendly. No attitude at all. I would return the next time I am in Atlanta.

Every time I come to Atlanta for a business trip, this restaurant is a must come! You can't go wrong here. Everything from their Corn Soup to their General's Chicken to their Duck to their Walnut Shrimp, everything is delicious. The owner is extremely friendly & so are her workers. Avoid this place else you will get worst food and service and leave with a bitter filling. Never had such experience in any other Chinese restaurant! I love that I finally wandered down to this place from my hotel and tried it out. It was nice and quiet at dinner, and the gentleman seating me made sure I was comfortable (I was dining alone). Service was attentive without being too bothersome (I usually read when I dine alone and nothing drives me batty more than a server who decides I need conversation.). Food - yummy. I had the crab angels (basically crab rangoon) with some so spicy and yummy Chinese mustard laced with wasabi. For dinner I had the General Tsu's since I had heard so much about it. Also very good pieces of chicken and spicy sweet sauce. Huge portion. I will definitely be back when I am back in Atlanta next month.

The opinion / review vs. reality disconnect appears to be expectations... And I get it - you find a place virtually indistinguishable from the Peachtree Center (address-wise), with Hsu's exterior, and you set your tastebuds to divey Amerinese nosh or cheap and convenient take-away (and there's nothing wrong with that). After all, they serve crab rangoon - an item that should very nearly qualify as a crime, IMHO, for spots attempting legit Chinese / Taiwanese / or other actual Asian flavors. But if that's the style food you're looking for, you're better off heading into the food court...it's only about a block away, after all, with several Amerinese takeaway options that aren't terrible.. Upon entry here, though, you'll see what I can best describe as traditional white - napkin (a step above white tablecloth) service...and although some aspects of the restaurant are certainly dated (though clean and comfortable), the servers are well-trained, efficient, helpful, and knowledgeable about what they're serving. And that's the pretty effing great part: the food. Nom. Nom. They have dishes that capture Hong Kong-style, Szechuan, Shandong, and Cantonese flavors, along with some Korean flavors - not much that I tried on my recent visit with a large group qualified as Amerinese, with corn-starch thickened sauces and spaghetti noodles, for example (ick! - nothing of the sort at Hsu's!). Heat aside (with a couple of Szechuan-style orders [as you'd expect], a lot of their items are a lot more subtle and/or understated than you'd expect if seeking Amerinese or even takeout Chimerican. Head-on fishies, when ordered, served properly (well, at least Taiwan-style)!!!! Erma-gerd! Corn soup - soooo good. All three types of dumplings (made just right! But the duck were definitely the best)...Noodles (5 tried - all yum!)...Duck (OMG! - one of us ordered the three item duck menu on our third visit and we all swarmed: he was luck to make it out alive)...Walnut Shrimp: sounds so bad, yet tastes so good! General Tsu's. Basil dishes. Pork / Beef Medallion dishes were good, as well. How did I get to taste so many dishes, more than once, on only three visits in the last eight months? Well, that's the great thing about Hsu's - they're set up for legit service for lucky groups, with dishes served family-style (on a center lazy susan), which makes it a great place for a collegial / collaborative working group meal. And they take (and are responsive to - even during high occupancy opportunities) reservations. As regards my service, I don't know whether the hosts ordered rice separately for everyone, or whether once you order a table full of entrees (even if some individuals order noodle dishes), all get rice - you may want to ask if you're with a group. (I do know that if you're with a small group [i.e. fewer than merits a lazy susan table], they will serve orders as if they are individual, not family-style, which means no rice for anyone else unless specially ordered.) Regardless, if you're looking for a nice, fairly authentic--with diversity of various regional "Chinese" flavors--Chinese (for ATL) meal, with great service...this is your place. Want a clamshell full of pork fried rice with an egg roll and a vat of sweet and sour sauce? General Tso's over pork fried rice? Pork ribs, rice, and vat of sweet and sour sauce? Then better to hit up the Peachtree center and get takeaway better suited..

Hm I've always wanted to try this place and finally did the past weekend. It was an okay experience. Service was prompt getting seated and drinks and food ordered after getting called by the hostess. The ambience right away sitting down is different from all the other Chinese restaurants I've been too. The furniture and decorations were all really nice and clean unlike a lot of other Asian establishments. The placement of the silverware and chopsticks on the steel holder really caught my attention as well. The restaurant was also very dim which is fine but just different to me. We ordered the calamari appetizer, general tso's chicken, and the basil beef. The calamari we had asked for it to be brought out with the rest of the dishes so I guess they fried it and let it sit till everything else was ready.. It had a very light tempura fry batter so it had just the right amount of crunch but it wasn't hot. General tso's chicken was very good and the chicken wasn't heavy on the breading. Plenty of sauce came on the dish for you to smother your rice. The basil beef had potential but some of the beef was badly burnt and it have the rest of the dish a smoky flavor and I didn't like that. At the end of the meal they bring you homemade fortune cookies dipped in chocolate on one end and it was very good. They also validate your parking ticket if you park in the garage next door (metropolitan garage I think?) I'll most likely be back in the future to try the other dishes.

However, if you're deaf or require any special accommodations at all, don't bother. Very nice traditional Chinese food in a classy setting. Great service, even on a very busy night. Everything we had was excellent - and it was a beautiful room to sit in. Short walk from the big hotels - not cheap, but worth it. If you go when there are big conventions in town, make a reservation, or the wait can be long.... Would definitely go again - looking forward to it.

Probably one of the best Chinese food experiences I've ever had. If you're ever in Peachtree, it wouldn't hurt to give this place a go. Try the fried calamari, they make it with some really good tempura, very light and crispy. The sauce is impeccable, seems to have a ginger base. The pan-fried noodles with chicken and shrimp are really good, and the wok-seared beef medallions are especially delicious. Very nice candlelit atmosphere, good date-night place.

My husband I were in Atlanta for a seminar and on our first night we wanted Chinese food. The bell men at our hotel recommend this restaurant and since it was only 2 blocks from the hotel we thought we would give it a try. First let me say, it is a very pretty place. Feels very high end. Not what I expected from a downtown metro area. Now for the bad news. The prices are crazy high. This is coming from a person who grew up in New York. We almost walked out because of the prices because we felt they were unreasonable. But being in a new city we thought we would splurge. The won ton soup was okay. Not bad, not great. I ordered a pork dish with sauce on the side. I did not realize that the dish was fried. When it came to our table I mentioned to the waitress that I did not want a fried dish. She stood and stared at my plate for a full 2 minutes not knowing what to do. Finally she went to the manager and said that they could get me something else but this is how the dish was made. Period. Since my husbands food was getting cold I told her to leave it. My husbands dish was not worth the $28 price tag. Some chicken and few Asparagus does not a dish make. I ate about 2/3 of the meal just so I would not be hungry. At the end of the meal the manager finally came to our table, told us that they would not charge us for my meal but said the problem was that they did not have many pork dishes on the menu and that was the problem. At this point I just wanted to get out of the place and go back to my hotel. It is likely that we will be back in Atlanta in the next year. It is 100 per cent certain that we will not go back to this restaurant.

Took a cab from my hotel to their sister restaurant for some sushi, and even though it was 25 mins before closing, they turned me away. :( They did suggest I try Hsu's and even called them up to say I was on my way. 2 blocks later and I was there, ushered in quickly and the door locked behind me! It WAS almost 10pm on a Sunday. I insisted that I could sit at the bar for dinner, so they could start cleaning the dining room, and they seemed grateful. I was pleasantly surprised when the waiter/bartender, laid out a crisp white napkin and made a lovely place setting for me at my place at the bar. He even dropped a lovely fan napkin in the center. The service was impeccable and the food quite good. The San Shan Soup is a must have and as a fan of egg drop, it was like Egg Drop Fully Loaded with shrimp, scallops and lots of veggies. Super. The salt and pepper shrimp was also quite delish, although for some reason I thought I was getting grilled shrimp and they were lightly battered. Still delish and the perfect balance of spicy and salty with onions and jalapenos. YUM. Entrees were a bit pricy IMHO, but the San Shan Soup was a great value!

First of all, I came in here dressed like a bloody vampire rabbit, and no one batted an eye. Immediate win. (Ok yes Dragon*Con was in full swing and they'd seen it all, but still!) I shared the duck with a friend. Oh sweet lord, this meal is exquisite. First they bring the duck out, and carve it in front of you. You're then given three different duck courses - the skin, a soup, and the meat itself. I didn't really care for the soup portion, it was a bit of an odd taste for me. The rest of the meal however, was superb. Definitely worth stopping by!

My girlfriends and I were desperate to have Asian food and walking around till a security on segway helped us. He said this place has great egg rolls so we decided to take his word for it. Food was good but nothing special. Rather small portioned for Chinese and expensive. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entrees with 2 drinks and 1 side of rice came out over $45. I saw the Zagat award the best of something from 1992 lol It needs to be updated for sure. Nothing negative about this place but it was just so expensive for what they gave us. Really enjoyed this restaurant. The menu is limited compared to the usual American/Chinese experience - you won't find six different types of chow mein - or any chow mein at all. Some of the dishes also sounded more Thai-influenced, such as the curry. Our party had the basil chicken and the basil beef, and everyone was happy. The restaurant is very quiet and mellow, and the service was great.

Decent Americanized Chinese food and I probably would've given it a higher rating were it not for the prices. I was in Atlanta for a union meeting and decided to come here with a friend for dinner. It was one of those deals where almost everything was included, but we decided we had to get out of the hotel for at least a little bit. I have to say the the service here was pretty good. Our vegetarian spring rolls were very crisp and not at all dough-y. My jumbo shrimp with ginger & scallion was about as good as any I'd had. Hsu's is a pretty good choice if you've been at a convention all week and/or you're tired of the nearby chain restaurants. It's just a little pricey is all.

OK, there is no way to say this other than this place is just bad. Bad as in lower than food court standards - proven. For the second time, against our better judgement we went to this place for lunch, thinking that we just had a bad dinner experience last time. I had the imperial chicken and my friend had the special rice (the one they are "famous for"). They were both soggy, oily messes coated in food court source. The people that bought asian from the food court actually had better testing less oil soaked food. Insult to injury we paid almost three times what they did. Stay away.

I had the crab angels (basically crab rangoon) with some so spicy and yummy Chinese mustard laced with wasabi. For dinner I had the General Tsu's since I had heard so much about it. Also very good pieces of chicken and spicy sweet sauce. Huge portion. I will definitely be back when I am back in Atlanta next month.

The opinion / review vs. reality disconnect appears to be expectations... And I get it - you find a place virtually indistinguishable from the Peachtree Center (address-wise), with Hsu's exterior, and you set your tastebuds to divey Amerinese nosh or cheap and convenient take-away (and there's nothing wrong with that). After all, they serve crab rangoon - an item that should very nearly qualify as a crime, IMHO, for spots attempting legit Chinese / Taiwanese / or other actual Asian flavors. But if that's the style food you're looking for, you're better off heading into the food court...it's only about a block away, after all, with several Amerinese takeaway options that aren't terrible.. Upon entry here, though, you'll see what I can best describe as traditional white - napkin (a step above white tablecloth) service...and although some aspects of the restaurant are certainly dated (though clean and comfortable), the servers are well-trained, efficient, helpful, and knowledgeable about what they're serving. And that's the pretty effing great part: the food. Nom. Nom. They have dishes that capture Hong Kong-style, Szechuan, Shandong, and Cantonese flavors, along with some Korean flavors - not much that I tried on my recent visit with a large group qualified as Amerinese, with corn-starch thickened sauces and spaghetti noodles, for example (ick! - nothing of the sort at Hsu's!). Heat aside (with a couple of Szechuan-style orders [as you'd expect], a lot of their items are a lot more subtle and/or understated than you'd expect if seeking Amerinese or even takeout Chimerican. Head-on fishies, when ordered, served properly (well, at least Taiwan-style)!!!! Erma-gerd! Corn soup - soooo good. All three types of dumplings (made just right! But the duck were definitely the best)...Noodles (5 tried - all yum!)...Duck (OMG! - one of us ordered the three item duck menu on our third visit and we all swarmed: he was luck to make it out alive)...Walnut Shrimp: sounds so bad, yet tastes so good! General Tsu's. Basil dishes. Pork / Beef Medallion dishes were good, as well. How did I get to taste so many dishes, more than once, on only three visits in the last eight months? Well, that's the great thing about Hsu's - they're set up for legit service for lucky groups, with dishes served family-style (on a center lazy susan), which makes it a great place for a collegial / collaborative working group meal. And they take (and are responsive to - even during high occupancy opportunities) reservations. As regards my service, I don't know whether the hosts ordered rice separately for everyone, or whether once you order a table full of entrees (even if some individuals order noodle dishes), all get rice - you may want to ask if you're with a group. (I do know that if you're with a small group [i.e. fewer than merits a lazy susan table], they will serve orders as if they are individual, not family-style, which means no rice for anyone else unless specially ordered.) Regardless, if you're looking for a nice, fairly authentic--with diversity of various regional "Chinese" flavors--Chinese (for ATL) meal, with great service...this is your place. Want a clamshell full of pork fried rice with an egg roll and a vat of sweet and sour sauce? General Tso's over pork fried rice? Pork ribs, rice, and vat of sweet and sour sauce? Then better to hit up the Peachtree center and get takeaway better suited..

Hm I've always wanted to try this place and finally did the past weekend. It was an okay experience. Service was prompt getting seated and drinks and food ordered after getting called by the hostess. The ambience right away sitting down is different from all the other Chinese restaurants I've been too. The furniture and decorations were all really nice and clean unlike a lot of other Asian establishments. The placement of the silverware and chopsticks on the steel holder really caught my attention as well. The restaurant was also very dim which is fine but just different to me. We ordered the calamari appetizer, general tso's chicken, and the basil beef. The calamari we had asked for it to be brought out with the rest of the dishes so I guess they fried it and let it sit till everything else was ready.. It had a very light tempura fry batter so it had just the right amount of crunch but it wasn't hot. General tso's chicken was very good and the chicken wasn't heavy on the breading. Plenty of sauce came on the dish for you to smother your rice. The basil beef had potential but some of the beef was badly burnt and it have the rest of the dish a smoky flavor and I didn't like that. At the end of the meal they bring you homemade fortune cookies dipped in chocolate on one end and it was very good. They also validate your parking ticket if you park in the garage next door (metropolitan garage I think?) I'll most likely be back in the future to try the other dishes.

The food - could rival any of the top Chinese restaurants in New York and is by far one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever eaten in. Food was delicious! I strongly recommend the crab angels. The General Tsu's was not spicy at all. The raspberry mojito tasted very crisp and fresh, not like artificial flavoring at all. However, if you're deaf or require any special accommodations at all, don't bother. Service became absolutely frightful as soon as they found out that the three of us were deaf, despite the fact that we could all speak clearly and had a menu in front of us to point at.

Very nice traditional Chinese food in a classy setting. Great service, even on a very busy night. Everything we had was excellent - and it was a beautiful room to sit in. Short walk from the big hotels - not cheap, but worth it. If you go when there are big conventions in town, make a reservation, or the wait can be long.... Would definitely go again - looking forward to it.

Probably one of the best Chinese food experiences I've ever had. If you're ever in Peachtree, it wouldn't hurt to give this place a go. Try the fried calamari, they make it with some really good tempura, very light and crispy. The sauce is impeccable, seems to have a ginger base. The pan-fried noodles with chicken and shrimp are really good, and the wok-seared beef medallions are especially delicious. Very nice candlelit atmosphere, good date-night place.

My husband I were in Atlanta for a seminar and on our first night we wanted Chinese food. The bell men at our hotel recommend this restaurant and since it was only 2 blocks from the hotel we thought we would give it a try. First let me say, it is a very pretty place. Feels very high end. Not what I expected from a downtown metro area. Now for the bad news. The prices are crazy high. This is coming from a person who grew up in New York. We almost walked out because of the prices because we felt they were unreasonable. But being in a new city we thought we would splurge. The won ton soup was okay. Not bad, not great. I ordered a pork dish with sauce on the side. I did not realize that the dish was fried. When it came to our table I mentioned to the waitress that I did not want a fried dish. She stood and stared at my plate for a full 2 minutes not knowing what to do. Finally she went to the manager and said that they could get me something else but this is how the dish was made. Period. Since my husbands food was getting cold I told her to leave it. My husbands dish was not worth the $28 price tag. Some chicken and few Asparagus does not a dish make. I ate about 2/3 of the meal just so I would not be hungry. At the end of the meal the manager finally came to our table, told us that they would not charge us for my meal but said the problem was that they did not have many pork dishes on the menu and that was the problem. At this point I just wanted to get out of the place and go back to my hotel. It is likely that we will be back in Atlanta in the next year. It is 100 per cent certain that we will not go back to this restaurant.

Great place relax and have dinner. The wait staff is attentive and the food is very good. I did a 3 course a hot and sour seafood soup,pork dumplings, and general hsu's chicken. The only complaint is that while the food was good it was not memorable. I'm not looking for enlightenment just a wow that was so good I have to come back with my wife. The homemade fortune cookie is really good.

Took a cab from my hotel to their sister restaurant for some sushi, and even though it was 25 mins before closing, they turned me away. :( They did suggest I try Hsu's and even called them up to say I was on my way. 2 blocks later and I was there, ushered in quickly and the door locked behind me! It WAS almost 10pm on a Sunday. I insisted that I could sit at the bar for dinner, so they could start cleaning the dining room, and they seemed grateful. I was pleasantly surprised when the waiter/bartender, laid out a crisp white napkin and made a lovely place setting for me at my place at the bar. He even dropped a lovely fan napkin in the center. The service was impeccable and the food quite good. The San Shan Soup is a must have and as a fan of egg drop, it was like Egg Drop Fully Loaded with shrimp, scallops and lots of veggies. Super. The salt and pepper shrimp was also quite delish, although for some reason I thought I was getting grilled shrimp and they were lightly battered. Still delish and the perfect balance of spicy and salty with onions and jalapenos. YUM. Entrees were a bit pricy IMHO, but the San Shan Soup was a great value!

First of all, I came in here dressed like a bloody vampire rabbit, and no one batted an eye. Immediate win. (Ok yes Dragon*Con was in full swing and they'd seen it all, but still!) I shared the duck with a friend. Oh sweet lord, this meal is exquisite. First they bring the duck out, and carve it in front of you. You're then given three different duck courses - the skin, a soup, and the meat itself. I didn't really care for the soup portion, it was a bit of an odd taste for me. The rest of the meal however, was superb. Definitely worth stopping by!

My girlfriends and I were desperate to have Asian food and walking around till a security on segway helped us. He said this place has great egg rolls so we decided to take his word for it. Food was good but nothing special. Rather small portioned for Chinese and expensive. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entrees with 2 drinks and 1 side of rice came out over $45. I saw the Zagat award the best of something from 1992 lol It needs to be updated for sure. Nothing negative about this place but it was just so expensive for what they gave us. I think I can find a better Chinese takeout for much cheaper price.

Came here with friends. Was not crowded. It was close to our hotel. Order the Shantung and duck dumplings as appetizers. Inform the waiter/waitress that you will be sharing your dishes so that they bring you plates for everyone in your party. Try these entrees: pan fried noodles Hong Kong style, General Tsu's chicken, Pork Medallion and the Walnut Shrimp. We were happy customers! They also have a full bar.

OK, there is no way to say this other than this place is just bad. Bad as in lower than food court standards - proven. For the second time, against our better judgement we went to this place for lunch, thinking that we just had a bad dinner experience last time. I had the imperial chicken and my friend had the special rice (the one they are "famous for"). They were both soggy, oily messes coated in food court source. The people that bought asian from the food court actually had better testing less oil soaked food. Insult to injury we paid almost three times what they did. Stay away.

I don't get the love for this place, but I don't get the hate for it either. It's alright. Honestly, it would have been a 2-star kind of deal, but the service was SO good that I would feel wrong leaving it at 2. It's expensive for what it is. I have no problem shelling out for food that earns it, but this place does NOT. It came out quickly, but the ingredients didn't have the same freshness I'm used to from other places in this price range. I had the Walnut Shrimp; after reading in reviews that these are the same people who used to run Silk (my total favorite place ever), I was so hopeful that this would be the same Walnut Shrimp from Silk. It was not. I was sad. :( The sauce was too heavy on the lemon and could have stood to be a little thinner. My dining companion had the Pork Medallions Peking-Style, and it was bland and kind of uninspired. It just wasn't special. The service was prompt, attentive, and friendly, but it couldn't save the mediocrity of the food. It wasn't BAD. It just didn't warrant the price, and it wasn't memorable or special. The decor is a little cheesy, but it's fine. ~I~ personally wouldn't come here again, but it's not a place I would tell you to avoid. I just think you can do better.

For the price the portions for takeout are not generous. We ordered egg drop soup which was good. The spring rolls were delicious. The shrimp fried rice was very good. The beef with broccoli cost 17 dollars and some change. I was disappointed with the quality of this dish. The beef was soggy like a sponge and the sauce was off. The broccoli was very good and this was the only plus about this dish. The best part is the fortune cookies are dipped in chocolate. I give this restaurant three stars!

This place was opened by the same owners as Pacific Rim and (now closed) Silk. You will see some similarities in their menu and style, but obviously Hsu's is Chinese food versus Japanese/Sushi. While dinner and main entree prices tend to be a bit on the high side (I guess they can charge more since it is "gourmet" and located downtown), lunch prices are very reasonable. I recommend a lunch special which comes in a bento style box with choice of entree, fried or steam rice, salad with ginger dressing (yum!), and crab angel. All this for only $8 or $9! Not bad at all. The salad was fresh, ginger dressing delicious, fried rice standard, and main entree good. I got the mongolian beef, and it was a little salty, but the salad helped cleanse my palate. Host and waitstaff were very nice and effecient, especially for a busy lunch. Our drinks were constantly refilled and dirty plates collected swiftly. The atmosphere is dim, but nicer than your typical Chinese restaurant.

I was lucky to have a local from Atlanta recommend the restaurant, because from the street I would never have imagined it would be a) such a nice atmosphere and b) have really good food! I opted for the special spicy seafood noodle soup which was filled with prawns, scallops and chicken - with a very flavorful broth and good noodles. The other dishes that were streaming by ( it was very busy at lunch time), looked very good! It is a locals place, but easily accessible right in the downtown area. I'd go back!!

Really enjoyed this restaurant. The menu is limited compared to the usual American/Chinese experience - you won't find six different types of chow mein - or any chow mein at all. Some of the dishes also sounded more Thai-influenced, such as the curry. Our party had the basil chicken and the basil beef, and everyone was happy. The restaurant is very quiet and mellow, and the service was great.

I'm so glad that I found Hsu's while visiting Atlanta last week. The place that I had chosen, close to my hotel, was closed down, so I quickly found Hsu's and headed there. I was a bit worried when I walked in because the place was empty at a little after 6pm. The decor was smart, but a little dark. I got a drink and my order was taken quickly. The hot and sour soup and walnut shrimp were delicious and every bit as good as anything I've eaten on the West Coast. About ten minutes after I walked in the place was full. Several large parties arrived while I was there. I enjoyed a leisurely meal and could see that Hsu's really have their act together. They coped superbly with the large parties. I've seen a few reviews that say it's expensive, but it didn't seem so to me, especially given the excellent quality and taste of the dishes that I tried. The servings were generous and each plate would easily have been enough for three or four people if they were sharing several of their favorite dishes. I'll definitely visit Hsu's again and I very much hope that other readers will have as good an experience there as I did. I'd award it five stars if the lighting was a little more modern and slightly brighter. The food is definitely worth 4.5 stars. I'd have to eat there several more times before deciding whether or not to rate it a 5. One minor detail impressed me - the kitchen ornament that held a spoon, fork and chopsticks. It really depresses me when I have to ask for chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant. Hsu's caters for people like me and those who are happier with a fork without any hassle. Thank You for that little touch.

This place is apparently an institution in downtown Atlanta. If you're in the mood for decent Chinese, Hsu's is a good choice. The service, atmosphere, and food are all very good. However, they might over-do it a little with the sauces. Still, if you're looking for a decent Chinese food fix downtown, give it a shot.

Hsu's is amazing. Been there twice for dinner. Both times the manager and staff were so friendly and helpful in every way. They're really genuine people and the food is very good. I appreciated that they went above and beyond to accommodate my special/custom requests. You have the option of eating at the bar (on one side of the restaurant), or being seated in the dining area (on the other side). If you're in the neighborhood, don't think twice about stopping by. You'll be glad you did...

I've been here a handful of times and this place is solid. Good food, but nothing to write home about. The service, however, is what will keep me coming back. It's always busy at lunch time but I've never had to wait for service...admittedly, I go to lunch later than most, between 1 and 1:30. The best thing about the place is the service. The staff is friendly and prompt. The host/hostess is always cheerful, and not that phony kind of cheerful you get with a lot of hosts. The food is pretty run-of-the-mill Chinese. I love the lemon chicken and the General Tso's chicken, which is tolerably spicy for me (and I'm a huge wimp with spicy stuff). Their crab angels are delicious! I'm a big believer in good service, so while the food is decidedly 3 stars, the consistently good service I receive here results in 4.

Decent Americanized Chinese food and I probably would've given it a higher rating were it not for the prices. I was in Atlanta for a union meeting and decided to come here with a friend for dinner. It was one of those deals where almost everything was included, but we decided we had to get out of the hotel for at least a little bit. I have to say the the service here was pretty good. Our vegetarian spring rolls were very crisp and not at all dough-y. My jumbo shrimp with ginger & scallion was about as good as any I'd had. Hsu's is a pretty good choice if you've been at a convention all week and/or you're tired of the nearby chain restaurants. It's just a little pricey is all.

Solid restaurant, nothing to jump over the moon about, but I would certainly go there again and recommend it to others. I debated rating it 4 stars, but I'm not quite there. I really liked their Beef With Flat Rice Noodles (aka Beef Chow Fun, Hefen), which as far as I can tell from their online menus, is only offered for lunch. This is a really popular Cantonese dish, although I don't know that Americans realize it's so good, because the title isn't terribly exciting. Anyway, I'm always happy to find a restaurant that makes it well. Hsu's version is too salty, and not THE best I've ever had, but it's still delicious. It's a full-flavored dry-sautee jumble of soft, thin, strips of flat rice noodles with moist, tender beef (probably thanks to MSG but whatever! The result is so delicious) with a little dark green onion and crunchy bean sprouts. Mmmmmm, meat and carbs! Generally service is very nice! The only rub was that the server brought me the wrong dish, which I wasn't too pleased about for the following three reasons: 1) I'd actually had a conversation with the waiter when ordering about the particular dish I wanted 2) No apology (I mean, not necessary, but it makes it better somehow) 3) The wrong dish looked kind of gross... I'm not all that picky and would've just eaten the wrong dish, in the interest of time, but this just looked like black goo. I liked that Hsu's has spring rolls, not egg rolls. Spring rolls are authentic - egg rolls are not. Granted, I actually PREFER egg rolls (I love the extra dough), but I know spring rolls mean the restaurant will have more authentic food overall. The decor is fine, I think it's pretty, sure maybe it's a little cheesy as other reviews have said, but no more than any other Chinese restaurant in America (minus parts of Los Angeles and San Francisco, although even those cities have their share of "cheesy" stereotypical decor). You know what, you're in America, it's fine to over-emphasize your culture. The only worrisome or potentially pretentious thing I noticed was that they describe their Walnut Shrimp (aka Honey Walnut Prawn, Honey Mayonnaise Walnut Shrimp, etc.) as being in "lemon aioli sauce." Um, it's a classically delicious dish that is generally made with mayonnaise. Either the chef is extra inventive, which when it comes to this particular dish is not a great thing (don't fix what ain't broke), or they think aioli sounds classier than mayonnaise (which okay yeah it does, but aioli necessitates garlic and garlic has no place in this dish... not to mention aioli is more of a Mediterranean thing anyway). Sorry, I couldn't seem to control my rambly-ness today. And despite all my ranting, I do recommend this place when it comes down to it!

This was our first visit to Hsu's. we were visiting from Nashville and hungry for good, authentic Chinese and gave it a try. So very glad we did. This was some of the best cuisine we have had in ATL. The service was excellent, the atmosphere clean and elegant, and the food outstanding and fresh. We had the walnut shrimp, pineapple fried rice, and general Hsu's chicken. 2nd visit to ATL for work-related meetings. Disappointed by the local food scene, yet again. We had our group dinner at Hsu's, close to the hotel where we were staying and attending a conference. Given the large group in a private dining room, the restaurant staff kept themselves busy throughout the evening. But the speed at which our foods came out seemed disproportional to their busy-ness. Once out, the food tasted good, but not spectacular. Overall, it was a "meh" dinner experience. Thank goodness for the fun company at least.

A solid 3.5 stars from me, almost 4 stars. It's a white-table dining establishment, and it threw me as soon as I entered. The food's straightforward and fresh. We had: - the vegetarian lettuce cups (nice crunch from the water chestnuts) - the fried tofu with vegetables and - the Tso's chicken and had them saute instead of fry the chicken, which was a lame decision on my part because the whole time I was eating it I was wishing it was fried. My bad. Still, great flavor. What threw me too? The prices! $15.95 for Tso's chicken! $7.95 for the lettuce cups! Really? The quality was definitely there (though the chicken was questionable), especially on the vegetables, but why the high prices? I guess the ambiance? The formal dining service? I dunno. Not a bad place to eat downtown though when you're STARVING and need Chinese food. Beats Hooters up the street!

This is a pretty good place, and caters to the business crowd. You get seated quickly, and the food is better than pretty much all the other Chinese places in the surrounding area. That said, it's a bit on the pricey side, but again, catering to the business & tourist crowd at PeachTree Center, it's nothing uncommon for the area.

I love this restaurant! This is the second time I've been here, both times at Dragon Con, and they are fantastic! They are so gracious and efficient while being swamped with conventioneers, in all manner of costume, even though this seems like it would normally be a dress up (more formal clothes) place. The decor is subtle, tasteful and pretty. They are incredibly accommodating. And, importantly, the food is great! I ordered the salmon with ginger sauce, which was superb. The duck dumplings and General Tso's chicken were ordered by my friends, and were great also. The only downside is that they are not open for lunch on the weekend, so plan accordingly. Also the food is more pricey than average Chinese cuisine, but it's a great deal for the quality, so you absolutely get what you pay for. Highly recommended!

We stumbled upon this place because it was near our hotel. Little did we know it's a tiny bit famous. the walls are covered with pictures of famous people who ate there. The picture of Betty White sealed the deal for us! the food was delicious and on our way out we spotted Spike Lee eating in the corner! Made my night.

I came here last Thursday with my girlfriend while she was on lunch. The service was prompt and friendly, overall. The food was very fresh, with considerable amounts of freshly-made food, as opposed to the prepackaged stuff you frequently find at such places. So why the low rating? Well, first, it starts with the fact that when we walked in, the manager said hi, and my girlfriend told him that we were having lunch there and that she wanted her usual. She was under a time crunch, and wanted to get them to go ahead and put her order in. I didn't know what I wanted. While normally, I would not consider them holding her meal while waiting on my choice a problem, in this case, it was one. Additionally, I wasn't terribly happy with the food, but that may simply have been my choice of meal. Ultimately, I wasn't overly impressed. I'll probably come back at some point, but I wasn't overall impressed with the location.

I'm originally from San Francisco and is this is the closest to Americanized "California" chinese that I have ever had in Atlanta. The prices are expensive but that is expected for the area where the restaurant is located. I would recommend this as a place to go for lunch when you dont have to pay the bill yourself.

I don't really get all the hate for this restaurant. Is it Americanized? Probably. Is it equal to the Chinese food you can get out in California? Haven't tried it, but I doubt it. Is it even as good as my favorite Atlanta Chinese restaurant? No, it's not. And by the way, go try China Inn in Chamblee. :D This isn't the best Chinese food in Atlanta, but my experiences here have not been bad, either. I find the decor amusing and I'm not sure why people are saying it's pretentious. What is it supposed to be pretending to be? The dining selection in this area of downtown Atlanta is REALLY sparse for some reason. I only know this because I've stayed at the Hilton on Dragon*Con weekend before. If you are staying in this area of town for a business trip, I feel sorry for you because you aren't going to get a good sampling of what Atlanta food has to offer. Hsu's, Trader Vic's, and Durango Steakhouse are (sadly) about the best you're going to do in the Peachtree Center area. But Hsu's really isn't bad. The food I've had there is tasty and the service is always polite. I just wish it weren't the only decent option in the area. (Granted, I have only been there for dinner, so I have no idea how good - or not good - the lunch there is.)

Absolutely delicious, I eat here once a week with my colleagues and I have never once been dissappointed. The service is always stellar, the atmosphere is great and the food is the best part. I frequently get General Tso's chicken, because it is delectable. The chicken is fried to perfection and the sauce is the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. My colleagues are always impressed as well, we literally make it a point to go atleast once every week.

I work near the restaurant and the boss sent me out for lunch today. Hsu's is basically an old school American Chinese restaurant. The decor is nice, I might try it for dinner this weekend. Granted I was there for takeout, but this illustrates the service. I showed up to get lunch for two people, one of the orders was very specific with substitutions, that was no problem. I had to add another with very specific instructions while waiting on the first two and they gave me a drink and had it ready within 2 minutes. Very fast, very friendly. I had the house special lo mein with scallops, chicken and shrimp. The ingredients are fresh and it tastes great. The shrimp is great - not overcooked, but just right. I took a peek at the other reviews - I don't think Hsu's or Atlanta in general is trying to be like New York. So, food was very good, service was excellent. And you can find other vegetarian dishes by asking for Tofu in lieu of meat. I liked this place a lot and will go back soon. Your options for lunch in this spot of downtown are pretty limited unless you want fast food or crappy tourist food and Hsu's is a decent choice in my opinion.

I have worked downtown for more than 3 years and this is the first time I have been to Hsu's and it 75 feet from my building. First, I went there for lunch and it was crowded and by the time I left there was a wait. So if you plan to go, go early. The menu has typical Chinese food items, so no surprises here. The food came out fast, service was good, although it was crowded. I wasn't overly impressed with the food, but it wasn't bad. I would it put it on the same level as other similar Chinese restaurants. Unfortunately, downtown has a glut of sub-par/ok places to eat and Hsu's falls into the ok category.

This is 3.5 stars. (Yelp is really weak in Atlanta reviewes...try Citysearch for more places.) Atlanta isn't a particularly sophisticated city so a hodge-podge of steak houses, with Tex Mex, Hard Rock and Hooters is what I had to choose from near my Wyndham hotel downtown. I checked out Hsu's as the only Chinese place nearby. I knew what to expect - slightly overpriced Chinese food for (non Asian) corporate America. That's what I got. Nothing special about this place - except I've never seen stuffed squid on the menu before - I tried that and it was excellent...a little picante and pickled cabbage and mango side dressing. My Lo Mein was simply fried egg noodles. A little chilli sauce spiced it up. I ate it all, I was hungry! Washed down with a Tsing Tao beer it came to $28 plus tip, courtesy of my company. Ta!

Was there today at lunch. Horrible customer service. Near closing, they bunched all the customers into the back wall. Wishing to unwedge myself from a family with small kids and a foursome of teenagers, and since the place was nearly empty, I asked to be moved. At least three people told me no including the manager because they were about to close in a half hour and wanted to ready the restaurant for dinner....during lunch mind you. Then at 225 pm, they inform me in a rude manner that the kitchen is closing in 2 minutes. The food is mediocre by any decent cities standard for chinese(San Fran, NY) so why deal with this attitude? Choptix in Buckhead is far superior. Hint to the management. When you are more concerned with closing or making life easy for your staff in a way that pisses off the customers then its time to hang up your wok. You are in the service business. Food can be had anywhere.

Had the basil beef and a glass of Pinot Noir. Awesome! Can't think of a better way to spend the first night in Atlanta for a conference. Owner friendly, greeted me and advised of what was good. Wonderful! I even recommended the dish to a nearby table.

The service was wonderful. The owner of the place was really friendly and kind to us. So, there's not much to complain about the service. However, I was not impressed with the food. I had the walnut prawns and I have definitely tried better. I expected the food to be yummy because the place seem so fancy. But then again, looks can be deceiving.

The concierge at the Marquis Marriott recommended Hsu's as one of the best restaurants within walking distance from the Hotel. The recommendation was right on target! The food was rich with flavor. Definitely not the typical Chinese food menu. Coming from the Los Angeles area, I have been to many Chinese restaurants, and I can definitely say this is the best Chinese food I've ever eaten! Stopped on by with a co-worker for dinner and found the food was about average for the price. If the prices were a bit lower, it would reflect the portions and quality a bit better. Otherwise, not too bad a place to stop by for a bite since it's so close to the peachtree area.

I was very pleasantly surprised. I came at a slow time. I got very attentive service. The menu mixes different Asian cuisines, which usually gives me pause. But the tofu on a bed of spinach I ordered was lovely. I asked for it extra-spicy, and that's what I got. Their wine list is nice. I found something a little offbeat, and it was quite good. I'd go again--happily.

I went to Hsu's with my aunt for dinner. It was awesome. They had my favorite dish - szechuan style green beans with shrimp. It was delish. My aunt had the avocado and shrimp dish. She enjoyed hers as well. They were very friendly and the service was fast. I will definitely go back and take my husband.

I really don't know why this place has such a low rating!! I have always gone during dinner and have had very positive experiences. Most of the time i get the Gen. Tso chicken but I have ad the duck with steamed buns as well. The service is always fast and the food is very good. from reading the other reviews it seemed that lunch is horrible so i will try it and update the review.

I travel to Atlanta for work about once a month and usually eat at Hsu's if I'm staying anywhere near downtown. I love Hsu's, but I don't particularly like giving out 5 stars if the food isn't mind-blowing, and no, Hsu's is not the absolute best Chinese food I've ever had in my life, but here's what got it to 5 stars: -The food is great - I've always been happy with my orders. Tonight I got beef satay (a staple) and fried tofu with vegetables. The vegetables were probably the freshest and best selection I've ever had in a Chinese dish: asparagus, broccoli, pea pods, carrots, corn, mushrooms, onions, and more. I asked for them to use a garlic sauce. Delicious. -I love their beef satay. It was the only restaurant food that I wanted to eat during my first trimester. I've tried to find one as good on the west coast and the east coast and have only found a few that come close. -Their service is great -- the staff remembers me, the food comes out fast, and they've always seemed very kind and accommodating, whether dining in or taking out. -I've actually chosen to stay downtown instead of near the airport partially so that I can eat at Hsu's. This place is really good, and certainly my favorite in downtown. And, it's open 5-10pm on Sundays, despite what yelp claims.

Mediocre Chinese, at best, for the downtown corporate crowd. Not that I was expecting wonders -- sorry, Atlanta, but New York you are not -- but I was disappointed nonetheless. Egg rolls? Bland and rubbery. Wonton soup? Too much salt, guys. And the kung pao chicken? It had absolutely no kick to it. The decent beer selection was about the only thing that redeemed my lunch here. Well, that, and the fact that I expensed it to my company. You're better off walking a few blocks north to the Mandarin House II -- sorry, driving, because nobody walks in Atlanta -- where you'll at least get a mediocre buffet for your money.

We went to Hsu's with a group of 10 this weekend, and it was surprisingly great. Downtown Atlanta restaurants are usually not very good, so I wasn't expecting much, but Hsu's was better than any Chinese I've had in Atlanta recently. We had the "stuffed lettuce" or what I'd call lettuce wraps -- yum. Shrimp with walnut sauce -- way yum. Pork tenderloin in "pungent" sauce (that word is a little scary on a menu, but we gave it a shot) -- delicious! I tried other dishes, too -- including some delicious sesame chicken. The service was great -- friendly, funny, and they did separate checks even though the menu said they wouldn't. I'd happily make the trip back downtown to have dinner here!

I was in the neighborhood for a 3-day conference. The restaurant selection in this neighborhood is not great. I ate at Hsu's every night, and I loved it. I got the Cantonese Style eggplant with chicken, and the Szechuan Style green beans with chicken. They were both absolutely delicious. I love that they dip their fortune cookies in chocolate! I can't compare this to other restaurants in Atlanta, because I've never been to any other restaurant in Atlanta, but I can compare it to Chinese restaurants in other cities (mostly Boston and Washington DC) and it was definitely well above average. I wish I had this place in my neighborhood!

I've been dragged here for lunch with various friends five or six times in the last couple of years. The food is very pretty, but somewhat overpriced, in my opinion. The decor is "black laquer chic". My biggest complaint is this: How can a Chinese restaurant only have one vegetarian dish?! There's not a single meatless appetizer or soup, either. Granted, the mixed vegetables with tofu IS pretty tasty, although it's not really a substantial amount of food (at least at lunch) and they tend to use the big, tough asparagus pieces. However, I asked a few days ago if I could substitute noodles for the rice (just to have SOME variety) and was told absolutely not!! Another time, a friend wanted to make a simple switch on his order and was told "no", as well. Now, I'm not picky, but I often ask for menu substitutions at restaurants and I have ALWAYS gotten what I wanted. Some restaurants add a small extra charge, which is fine, but I've NEVER been told "no". I will not "vote" for this restaurant again when I'm eating downtown with friends.

Excellent ambience and food - a rare combination. The basil chicken was awesome so was the chicken corn soup. Service was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be back when I am in Atlanta again.

I had Hsu's for the first time today and wow, was it good. The staff recognized my coworker and greeted him by name which says something about the level of service they give. It was packed out since it was lunch, but we were still seated promptly. I ordered the asparagus with black bean sauce and shrimp. I don't think I've ever seen that size shrimp served at a Chinese place before, and they loaded the plate up with them! My coworker had the seafood soup and said it was delicious. I would have given this place 5 stars, but for two things: noise level (there were a lot of tables packed in together so it was loud) and the diet coke was a little flat. Otherwise, A+. Will be taking friends there soon for sure!

Would not visit again. Ordered General Tso's Chicken and an egg roll. Cost me $25. The chicken was very poor in quality, and the egg rolls had shrimp, pork and something else in them all at once. Not a good combination all together. I eat Chinese food in every major city in the country due to my type of work and this has been the worst so far.

HaSues?! Sues?! Whatever the name, what enSUED was a foray into flavor town. 2 appetizers to make a meal with a bowl of fried rice. I was looking forward to the duck dumplings but it was my afterthought of fried Calamari that stole the show. Lightly fried in a tempura batter, the squid was tender & delicious, but the ginger sauce it was served with.......OUTSTANDING! It was bright & citrusy a total 180 degrees from marinara. For that I was grateful. The duck dumplings had a plump pocket of moist duck & vegetables, quite flavorful on their own, the sauce just enhanced it. The fried rice although it looked bland, it actually had a nice flavor profile with just the eggs and scallions. Happy I took the walk down the road. Staff was top notch, I can't see how anyone could complain about a meal or service here. Friday Update. Yes I went back again. And we ordered some spring rolls which were better than other spring rolls I've had, plus we ordered the duck dumplings & Calamari againDON'T JUDGE ME! I'm in a foreign state with no time in between meetings to really travel far to try other places. But shout out to my waiter JUSTIN who was fun, funny, & helpful. He tried to talk me out of getting the Shantung Black Noodles because he didn't think I'd like it only the "Asians" order it.......A LOT! Silly youngster now I really want it. And it was the perfect choice. It was awesome! Noodles with scallops & beef or was it shrimp & pork in a black bean sauce. Justin wasn't sure & I didn't care, it was Licious! I told him I'll meet him at the back door & slide me the noodles after hours. Great food & Better Service again! The extra star was for Justin.

My mom would take away my Asian card if she knew I liked this place. Hsu's is the definition of classy American Chinese food. There's no smell of grease lingering in the air as you walk in to pick up takeout, or the fear of food (coloring) poisoning. Catering to the downtown lunch crowd, Hsu's has a combination lunch that comes in a cute little bento. Rice, entree, crab rangoon (crab angel), and a small salad for $10. Even their entrees are a good deal, $8 - $15 for a sizable portion. Everyone I know loves the seafood noodle soup (jambong). I've tried the basil chicken and beef. While they are named the same, they are prepared differently. The basil chicken is actually more of a black bean sauce chicken. It comes with green peppers. The basil beef is not as dark and comes with snap peas instead. I didn't care for the beef much. It was a bit tough and rubbery. The meal ends with a fortune cookie... Dipped in chocolate. I would eat so many of these if they sold them individually wrapped.

So it feels like the stars have aligned when some of the best Chinese food around is downstairs from your office. This is a lunchtime favorite for the office and because we live close-by we come here for drinks some Friday and Saturday nights. Kenny is a gem! The black noodles are delicious, side note: must like onions. My favorite dish is the Szechuan Style String beans with shrimp. If you have time and are in the mood they are definitely worth the trip.

I was here for Dragon*Con dinner with friends. It is a bit pricy for Chinese food in my opinion, but you pay for what you get. I ordered the String Beans Szechwan Style with Beef. It was really great. Some of the best Chinese food I have had. It was also an ample serving. I don't recall what everyone else ordered, but it looked great and everyone left happy. I will likely make another visit this fall. I would likely order the same dish again. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :-)
