Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Not impressed. Chips tasted stale and like recycled leftovers. Food was mediocre at best. Salsa and queso were decent but everything else was blah. Very disappointed. Not to mention the inside decor is just plain... weird. Fish/shark/sea creature pictures everywhere like it was a seafood restaurant once upon a time in the 80's. Go somewhere else.

Cheap, consistent Mexi-chain. This has that age-old menu that has been around in Atlanta since the 70s among the more authentic Mexican chains. Over the years, this is the one that has focused on the best price in a clean restaurant with quick service. They've nailed it. Service is not friendly but it is quick and courteous. They are quick with chips and salsa, they get your order right and they are quick with the check. The place has utilitarian laminate booths and big pics on the wall from someone's undersea diving adventures. It gives you the feel of eating in a clean place except that the men's room is often messy and located in a closet. Yea, you'll have to see it to get that. The food is pretty consistent. The salsa is tastier than the places that serve the stewed tomato stuff but not the wonderfully dish with tasty herb and spices thatch you'd get at Los Lorros. The chips are those thick ones with hearty flavor. The guacamole has sour cream in it which is yummy for for some but a problem, if you're avoiding dairy. The rest of the food is pretty consistent. Never soggy or bland but isn't really special either. They're clear that their clientele is price driven so the menu is in order by price. I don't come here often, except when I'm with one of my frugal friends but I don't mind it. it has become an old standard place with lots of memories of laughing and carrying on. It makes the food taste a little better.

I moved away from ATL a few years ago after living near El Torero for over 8 years. I missed it. After being in town for nearly month, I've been back twice already. It's dependable, the service is great and the ambiance is definitely unique! Yes, yes, I know this isn't 'authentic' Mexican food, but it definitely has a niche of it's own. Not many other places like it are as dependable, hospitable and delicious! Of course, the chips and salsa: The chips are fresh, thin and crispy! The salsa is unique compared to all the other similar joints. I think it's because they put a little horseradish in there. Either way, I LOVE IT! I like gray refried beans. They are a vice. Sure, refried black beans are healthier, but did you really come here to eat healthy? I didn't think so. Spanish rice is decent. Of all the options I think I like the chicken enchiladas the best. Shredded chicken breast, tasty enchilada sauce and cheese, no messin around. Hits the spot! Get a bean burrito with option #17. Taco's are also solid w/ lettuce, tomatoes, and tons of cheese with your choice of filling. The el diablo is also superb and well seasoned with chunks of chicken, spices, veggies and sauce! What ever you order, you won't go wrong. Plus, there are enormous fish on the walls!

I would give 2 stars if the food wasn't tasty...but, it is so 3 it is. Nothing to write home about. Personally, it's like any normal cheap Mexican restaurant. Nothing special. Service was HORRID. I haven't had such a rude, inattentive waiter in a long time..this must be a family owned place? Idk how else to explain how this man is employed as a waiter. He ignored us most of the time. Our water cups were literally empty for half the meal. It was ridiculous. When your 9 year old notices, you know it's bad!!! I may go back ONLY because it is so extremely close to my apartment & I love Mexican food. I will try to end on a positive note..the cheese dip was pretty good.
(3)Jay C.
You'll find me here every Friday night without fail! The food is great!!! The staff is efficient and everyone has a specific job to do, so understand if "the chip guy" doesn't respond when you need a refill! The staff works hard but their desire to be quick and get the job done can be mistaken for lack of concern ... Give them a chance and you'll be pleased!
(5)Suddenly J.
Food is good, but the service is lacking. I use to overlook it because of the spinach quesadilla they had, but I'll just make it at home now. I miss the ladies that use to work there. They were very friendly.
(2)Timothy M.
I love this place. They have a much better mole sauce than any of the other places around Atlanta. The margaritas are simple and strong. The beer is fresh. I have eaten here about twenty times and sampled many of their dishes. They are quick, tasty and I appreciate the simple decor. The pictures were all taken by the owner.
(5)Vishal P.
Your classic hole in the wall that looks like a toilet but has good food. The food is really good, the chips and salsa are endless. The margaritas are great. I don't get the plastic fish on the walls but whatever works.
(3)Natasha N.
I'm SO sad writing this. I've raved about the food because it truly is awesome. Even though people think the wait staff are grumpy, I think they have character. However there is one deal breaker and that deal breaker is roaches. Sadly, upon our last two visits (don't judge, yes, I saw them once and went back again) there were roaches. I'm so, so, sad but I'm better off without roaches. The shopping complex got a face lift and as part of that face lift I thought fumigation would be part of the deal...but it wasn't. Sorry folks, this place is off my list.
(1)Leah G.
Extremely generic. You know that picture that comes to your mind with typical Mexican restaurants? Insert a whole lot of really big fake fish on the walls, and you're practically there. The service could not care less about their performance, and offered absolutely no guidance through their menu. There were a lot of options, which was nice. Forget changing any details about your order, so not possible. The salsa was good, cheese dip was very typical, and food was typical at best. Not extremely cheap either, which is why I give it less stars than it could have earned. With two drinks, cheese dip, and two a la cart items = $40. OUCH. Had the food been better, I would have thought it was worth it.. but oh well. Still searching for my Mexican restaurant home, but I'm sure I'll be back plenty.
(3)V M.
One star - not because the food wasn't really good because it was. Not because the margarita wasn't awesome...but because after several bites, my friend and I discovered a baby roach..yes a baby roach on the table. Anyone who knows anything about roaches knows where there is one baby roach there are hundreds more lurking in the shadows lol But seriously GROSS! !! It took everything in us not to vomit. .. Then when the manager came out and as I was asking for the meal to be comped, he picked up the roach between two fingers and squished it and had the nerve to say it was a baby fly lol FYI...the table was clean and clear until AFTER the food came. Happy hunting :)

I have been to El Torero a few times and each time we have had a good experience. Currently, the entire shopping center is under renovation which makes it seem super sketch... but its not. Their chips are fresh and salsa is good. Not too spicy... not too bland. I have ordered a variety of their meals and they are always what I expect, fast service, a large plate of re-fried beans/rice and a couple of entrees slathered in red-sauce where I can never figure out which one is which... typical Mexican :) Their food is reasonably priced, around $10-15 for the typical combination dinner, which I usually can split with my fiancee (because there is always so much food). Make sure you do not wait for the waiter/waitress to come and take your credit card, or you will be waiting a long time. You have to take your check up to the counter and pay there. No problem with that, just something to note. My only downside to the place is the margaritas. They sell their margaritas by the glass or pitcher which is a plus. Now I would not say that I am a connoisseur of fine margaritas, but I have had my fair share of them. I have only ordered their frozen margaritas, so I cannot vouch for the ones on the rocks... but I have yet been able to determine if they do not taste good because their mix is off or because they are incredibly strong. I am not one to ever complain about a strong drink... but these margaritas are almost un-drinkable. Even my fiancee agreed that he had a tough time finishing his. Overall, I'll be back, but maybe I'll just get a Tecate next time.

Sigh...I hate to write this, but I feel like I need to. This used to be my main Mexican spot. It's a basic numbered-menu type place. They have quest dip. You know, sometimes you need a hang spot like this. The last time I went, though, I decided I could never go again. When I stood up from the table, I reached down to get my purse out of the booth, and there were three roaches crawling around where I'd been sitting . Yikes! So long, El Torero. I'm so sad it had to be this way.
(1)Katrina W.
Food is good! I have been here several times and I do not have any complaints. Great lunch spot for coworkers or to meet friends!
(5)Sarah K.
El diablo was good. BUT the service is awful. The waiters are sitting around like they have nothing to do even though they never came around to check up. It also seemed to be a big deal for a side of lettuce. The pictures are crooked as crap. Just not sure anyone cares or takes pride in what they have or are doing.....
(2)Gaby B.
Yuck... first of all is not real authentical mexican food. Its gringo mexican food. Food blagh. Service blagh. We wont go back ever.

Just signed up for Yelp because people need to know about this place. My wife and I decided to try El Torero last night for our first time. We started off with some beers and queso dip. After a few minutes of eating the queso dip I found a black hair in our cheese dip. After we alerted the waiter and showed him the hair he said nothing and just took the bowl back to the kitchen. When he returned he placed our new bowl on the table and said nothing to us again. He could of at least apologized to us. I took a tortilla and started to stir the new cheese dip around and discovered another black hair. We could not find our waiter so we let another waitress know that we were leaving and were not going to have dinner. She replied by charging me $5 for half the beer I drank. Even the family next to us could not believe she did that. Needless to say we will never be going back to El Torero.

So its beem almost a month and half me and my girlfriend visited this place.., the first thing that we like about the restaurant is that its near our apartment at walking distance hehe.. So dont have to wait the crazy traffic unlike other places..anyways talking about the food this place has average food taste..pricewise its pretty cheap comparing to what other mexican restaurant is charging. All the staff here are pretty friendly servers are accomadating but I would be more happier if they show little more graciousness towards customer, I dont know if its the right word or not but I myself used to work as a server and people always wants to see that smile on your face when they walk in door..which makes a big difference.I hope it would make be come back and will be obliged to give five stars.
(3)Food L.
I think a minimum requirement is the wait staff should speak some English. Hand signals and grunting does not a pleasant experience make. The food was less than mediocre and establishment looks like 1972 threw up in it.
(2)Brian J.
El Torero is my new favorite Mexican spot for frozen margaritas. I also love their jalapeño queso dip with chips and their fajita steak taco salad.
(5)Stephen E.
The good: 1. Decent quantity servings 2. Larger menu than most mexican restaurants, including seafood. 3. Friendly service and waiter through in some toppings for free...willing to customize order 4. Food was reasonably fresh, not overly spicy. 5. Prices were reasonable The Bad: Restaurant could have been a little cleaner, but is older and was very busy. Overall, pretty good and would be 3 stars, but for this area it's one of the better choices I've been to so far.
(4)Patrick C.
I usually come here once a week. Have done so for the better part of a decade. I usually have the special stuffed quesadilla with fajita chicken. It's really, really good. The decor's a bit odd: huge plastic fish on all the walls, but the service is good, the food is tasty, and the beer's cold. I'll keep comiong back.
(4)Audrey F.
El Torero is my equivalent of Mexican comfort food. Located in a strip mall, as practically all good Atlanta restaurants are, this hidden gem serves up delicious, unhealthy, cheap, filling Mexican dishes. Their refried beans are some of my favorite in Atlanta - you simply must try them if you go. They are not stingy with the free chips and salsa here as so many other Mexican restaurants are, and the queso is a perfect addition to them. For lunch I recommend the Speedy Gonzalez: one taco, one enchilada, and choice of rice or beans. Other favorites are their fajitas and their margaritas - super sweet, super strong, and super tasty. You can get in and out of El Torero quickly which is great for the lunch crowd or for dinner before a movie. The servers are attentive, food comes piping hot and quickly to your table, and you pay afterwards at the register which eliminates any waiting to get your credit card back delay. Don't come to El Torero if you are looking for ambiance, or particularly healthy food. Do come to El Torero to share a delicious meal with friends and feel like you are part of the El Torero family.
(4)Cee E.
The best bean burrito I've ever had. Their red sauce is delicious and tastes way better than other mexican places. Their cheese dip and salsa are also great. More than anything I love how reliable their food is. And the owner is really nice. Use to go here about once a week before I moved.

Restaurant: 3.5 stars Beef soft tacos: 4.5 stars White Cheese Dip: 4 stars Margaritas: 4 stars I grew up in the 90s around El Torero area - this place is OG and solid. The white cheese on the soft tacos is the best. The other dishes are solid but I always ordered 3 soft beef tacos. The margaritas are strong and inexpensive. And the same staff has been there since the 90s - pretty consistent staff to me. Even years later - I can say this place is good if you want to grab some good Tex Mex at a decent price - cheap dinner/moderate priced lunch. You could do worse for sure in the same price range around North Druid HIlls.
(4)Polly N.
I love this place so much. We've been coming here since I was pregnant with my first and he is now 6 years old. My favorite is the special taco salad. Nothing beats their salsa!!! The only thing is that service can be rather slow but, if you have patience, it is well worth the wait!! So yummy!

I'm writing this "on the fly", as this is my first (and probably only) visit to this dump. As a disclaimer, I have to state that I'm here in Atlanta on business, and my home is in Austin, TX, where great restaurants and Tex-Mex abounds. I walk in the door and have a grumpy padre greet my with a single finger held up, questioning. I reply that, Yes, I'm by myself, to which he replies, "Sit anywhere." Gee, thanks... Glad I came alone so you wouldn't dictate where I sit. I'm hardly in my seat before another grumpy old guy wants my drink order; I reply "Just water with lemon, please". His response is to point to the glass of water-sans lemon-already on the table. I hadn't even opened the menu when he says, "Ready to order? You know what you want?" I reply that it's my first time in here, and he walks away without a word. No comprende? Who knows? I did manage to let him know I wanted to try the queso, and again his clipped response: "Cheese dip. You want jalapeño peppers? No peppers?" They bring the queso--excuse me, "cheese dip"--30 seconds later and this stuff tastes like they melted a cube of that white "queso cheese" you can buy in Walmart, and threw in some dirty Tupperware to boot. I would call it "tasteless", but it HAD a taste: "yuck". Don't waste your money on the "cheese dip". I ordered the #15 dinner: beef burrito, beef enchilada, and beef tamale. Dinners don't include the standard rice and beans, but another Yelp review had raved about the refried beans, so I ordered them a la carte for an extra $2. The beans were standard industrial-size jug stuff: nothing spectacular but certainly nothing to rave over. For $2, the serving size was decent...but again, it's just beans. My "special" is special because it's missing an enchilada. I got a burrito with some bland red sauce on it--they didn't ask what kind of sauce I wanted--and something lumpy buried under a pile of ground beef; I think it was supposed to be the tamale. No enchilada anywhere. I'm not the kind to create a scene, plus my company was paying for it, so I didn't say anything. I did finally get the waitress' attention for a refill on my water, so that was a plus, I suppose. The food was bland, definitely not Tex-Mex, but I guess there's no such thing as Ga-Mex, huh? Or maybe this was it. In any event, I escaped with my life and the company got robbed of $19 for VERY sub-par food, and even worse service. I'm not sure what passes for good Mexican cuisine in Atlanta, but if this is it, I can't wait to get back to Austin, TX where they know how to dish it up right. Avoid this place at all costs.

Just visited the El Toro / Horrible horrible horrible service First of all we were the Only people in the entire restaurant Came in _placed order After 15 minutes we finally got our water 45 minutes later _ food arrived _ didn't order anything fancy. The daily special Told them to just make it to go On way home call to file a complaint Talked to managers daughter - she said if we weren't satisfied with the service then just don't come back !, Really I asked her - told her we have been coming here for years - her response - So what - don't come back if you don't like the bad service you got. She said bring the food back & she would give us a refund - I was almost home I would recommend to everybody skip this place - they don't care about lousy service or trying to make right a bad situation This is the last time I'll EVER step foot in this place There are many other Mexican restaurants that care about customer service & will make right a bad experience My rating - 2 thumbs down
(1)Liz F.
This location is one of 3 that I frequent a lot!! I usually come here on Saturday afternoons with my cousin. We are now recognized as regulars but they treat everyone as long-time customers! They bring water, chips, and salsa immediately and will refill all 3 as much as you may want!! The food is really good but not fancy, has large portions, and has good service. I LOVE their cheese dip and it is used in their nacho dishes. I recently have moved to a more vegetarian diet and they have a nice bean nacho dish which you can order in 1/2 or whole portion size for a small $$. The whole portion of Special Chicken nachos (shredded chicken, cheese sauce, chips, guacamole, and sour cream) is my cousin's go-to dish and the portion is HUGE! The food comes out quickly and is always hot and tasty. I've eaten other meals here over the years and they all have been good and tons to eat for a really reasonable price. One thing that is really nice is that they don't try to rush us out if we want to linger and chat and catch up on all that is going on with each others lives - - they'll just bring more chips!! One more neat thing about this family-owned restaurant is that they give out free calendars to their guests with beautiful photos the owner has taken.
(4)Thomas B.
I like this place! There are mixed reviews on here but I have been coming here for years and its always good. Not super cheap but good Mexican food. Cheese dip with ground beef is awesome!
(4)Kristen H.
I'll preface with saying that I've only been here once for lunch. I was not impressed. I ordered a lunch special with a chicken soft taco with rice and beans. The food literally had no taste. The chips were straight out of a bag and the salsa was bland. The prices are great, but the food is not. There are too many other places in the area I would rather go to.
(1)Ziggy S.
I love El Torero. It has become my family's go-to Mexican restaurant The food is always solid, and the service is fast and accurate. Their chicken tortilla soup is fantastic, and you get a ton of it for around $5.00. The menu is expansive and your sure to find something you like. And what is with all of the comments about the fish on the wall. What's wrong with that? I like fish. is every Mexican restaurant supposed to have cheesy terra-cotta figures everywhere? Don't change a thing El Torero: Fish Rule!
(4)Jenn K.
Not only is the food bad, customer service rude, but I have just one word for you: R-O-A-C-H-E-S. Yes, fellow Yelpers. A brown creepy, winged fellow "paid" for our lunch today. NEVER AGAIN!
(1)Sarah B.
Put aside the cheap tables and wood wall paneling. The food here is pretty dang good for the price. You get massive portions of salsa and chips. The cheese dip is awesome and you get a massive amount of that, as well. The menu is pretty basic but they have some good things on it. I got a chicken fajita quesadilla and it was top notch. When my waitress asked if I wanted a refill on my soda, she brought a small pitcher back for me. Definitely worth going to if you're craving Mexican.
(4)Royal M.
I simply wasn't impressed, although a bunch of other people apparently were based on the crowd by the time we left! We arrived early for lunch and it wasn't crowded when we go there, so no excuse for lack of service. the waiter literally handed us our menus and asked if we knew what we wanted. Really???? I don't think I've ever had that happen before. Salsa was good, chips were not. Nothing like stale crushed chips from the bottom of the barrel... Lunch fajitas were just OK, with a choice of beans, or rice. You only got one out of the normal two, but they made up for it by keeping the portion small (yeah, right...). Two also seemed to be a theme as that is the number of tortillas you received. I have a fairly steadfast rule - there are way too many greats restaurants in ATL to go back to one where you had a poor experience. This one falls under that rule.
(2)Greg R.
The food here is always good. The decor is hard to understand. Stuffed saltwater fish all over the walls and cheap wall coverings and tables. A remodel could do wonders here.
(4)Valerie N.
I love El Torero! Love the booths, the crazy fish on the walls, the wonderful mexican food... as far as chain Mexican restaurants go, this is a winner. Its not the cheapest Mexican restaurant I've ever been to, but it sure hits the spot! Don't try looking for the prices on the internet - they aren't listed there (sketchy? hmmm). I've only been here for lunch, but I have been so many times, it would be impossible to count! As a heads up, this is the longest menu I've ever seen, primarily due to most things being available in half orders. It can be overwhelming for some folks... I love that you can get a small 3 oz. cheese dip here. The salsa here is delicioso! Some of my menu faves... -- Lunch fajitas -- Special Quesdilla Fajita -- Special Burrito ABC (single) -- Beef tacos (simple, yet divine with yummy white cheese!) -- Fajita tacos -- Tacos de Carne Azada -- Fab sweet tea I've yet to try their Huevos Rancheros, but its on the list. They also have my hubby's face, Chilaquiles, so we should make a plan to stop by at Sunday brunch some time. Parking is ample, credit cards accepted, and most importantly, super duper friendly staff who move at Speedy Gonzales speed to get you your chips & salsa, drinks, food, and bill. A Funny Note... The last time we were here, a lady took our food and then had the gall to complain that it wasn't what she ordered (I had a burrito, my friend ordered tacos, the crazy lady ordered fajitas). I am STILL shocked she accepted food intended for two people that in no way resembled fajitas, then proceeded to eat most off the food from each plate, and then complained that it wasn't what she ordered! Even when they came by with her plate of fajitas, she said, "No that's not mine..." I bring this up (1) for a good laugh and (2) to demonstrate that El Torero handled a really odd situation in a super easy manner. Our order came out lickety split and was still to the specifications I had intended (I can be a bit picky about what I want in my burrito). Update on 3/10/11: I went here for lunch and it was absolutely bizarre. We sat for a super long time without our order being taken. This is the first time this has happened to me but it was really frustrating. I note that several other folks have commented on the poor service.
(3)Tim C.
I've been coming to this restaurant on and off for over three years. They make a strong margarita, and by the pitcher it's one of the best deals in Atlanta. For food, their numbered menu is more standard for what you would find in most Mexican-themed restaurants in Atlanta. Their appetizers are HUGE so if ordering as a meal, you may want to consider a half-order. Their house specialties menu is more tailored from the restaurant and offers a variety of pork, chicken and shrimp dishes. I recommend the combo tacos, the taquitos or pork carnitas to start. Come back often and keep trying new things. The staff is friendly, especially if you are doing takeout. The music is usually festive and not too loud, and there's always a crowd at lunchtime during the week and dinners on Friday and Saturday.
(4)Kimberly C.
Absolutely fantastic and authentic Mexican food in an unassuming stripmall. Chile relleno was the best I have ever had- on either side of the border. Salsa can't be beat- a great mix of fresh tomatoes and solid heat. Menu a bit daunting, but pick any combination plate for a surefire selection. Will definitely be back!
(4)Kevin G.
I love this place. It is exactly what a Mexican place should be. No frills, cheap, lots of good food, and fast. Cheap drinks, lots of tables, and plenty of parking. Take your basic mexican menu and add nothing but cheese and sauce. There it is. It is not authentic, it is not fusion, it is not nuevo chic, it is what it is. One of the best things you can get are the chili rellenos. They take full chilis and fill them with everything good and cook them well. Not fired like most crap places do but cook with a technique that keeps them tasty and perfect. Get some.
