The owner of this place is the nicest little lady! This is our go-to place for take-out. They give us a ton of food at a pretty low price that my Thai wife says is pretty authentic. If you want a solid meal at a good price, go here every time!

Friendly, right-price, tasty. What else do you need or want in a neighborhood eatery?!? We enjoyed our pad thai and masuman chicken curry. Plan to go back to try other selections from the menu.

I should write a separate review on the ladies that run this place. They are painfully cute and sweet and definitely contribute positively to the overall dining experience. You can tell they love what they do and take pride in their restaurant (Bangkok opened in 1977, claiming to be "the first Thai restaurant in Atlanta"). Everyone there was regulars and didn't ask for a menu before ordering. The ladies told us that if you order the same dish several times or make any interesting changes to one of the menu choices, they'll name it after you ("David's Special Tilapia" was on the chalkboard the day I went). The fried ice cream seems to be a popular dish. The view is priceless. The huge windows provide a view of the busy Monroe and Piedmont intersection and a local homeless hangout. I lost my appetite a tad as I watched a homeless dude with burn scars eat out of a trashcan, licking his fingers after. I also kept myself entertained by ogling at least 20 glistening, sweaty, gay man bodies running on the sidewalk. The restaurant is small and very old, but I thought it was clean and nicer than others have thought, and I definitely didn't notice a smell. I had the shrimp salad, and my mom ordered the "Shrimp Ashore". My salad was crisp, refreshing, and flavorful, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. If you ask for it very hot like I do, they'll do it - you'll go through at least a few glasses of water, but don't despair - they'll refill it before you begin to suffer. My mom has been eating Thai for decades, and she rarely ever cleans her plate. She spoke highly of her dish at Bangkok and ate every bite. If you want to dress up and go to the "it" place of the moment, don't go here. However, if you appreciate affordable, authentic, dependable Thai food served with a smile, you'll enjoy dining at Bangkok.

very friendly and cheerful service. The servers really treat you well. The owner also came to our table to make sure we enjoyed the food. I thought all the food was really very tasty, but it had a light, home-cooked vibe to it. Also, the interior is quaint but shabby.

Love this place! Home style Thai. Nothing pretentious. Everything is cooked to order, so you can make special requests, and they are very accommodating. Great take-out (very fast!) or a good place for lunch. My favorites: massamam curry with shrimp, pad Thai with chicken and shrimp, and the basil rolls. Yum. Very inexpensive. Better than any big city expensive Thai restaurant I have been to.

I love their Pad Thai! We always get the same waitress who is super friendly and remembers what we order even though we only go once every couple of months. There's plenty of parking and the service is quick so its easy to do for lunch or dinner even if you're in a hurry. We passed it a few times before going in because it looks like a ho hum strip mall kind of place, but now it's one of my favorites.

HHHOOOONK! HHHOOOOONK! The sound of noses blowing is usually a good sign for a Thai restaurant. Not so for Bangkok Thai, this place just.....well, blows! I had my usual 'measuring stick' meal, the panang curry tofu. I requested hot (one step from 'Thai Hot')....it was still bland and not very tasty. On the plus side, the service was good and the jasmine tea was great. However, I can get great tea and good service someplace else with better food. I won't be back.

I have been dining at Bangkok for 5 years and lived in Thailand and trust me their food is authentic as can be!! Chai has offered superior service above and beyond any expectations! I love the drunken noodle and Tom Kai Kai the most! Please visit this reasonably priced and authentic Thai restaurant if you want to experience a Thai family restaurant experience! Kopkunkhop!

Bangkok is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in atlanta. Paul, the owner, is a really cool guy and once I got on a first name basis with him, he doesn't even let me select items off the menu anymore since he'll come up with a personal dish customized for exactly what I like. This can be a bit pricer than his normal lunch times but it is definiltey worth the extra couple dollars. My favorite dish is his customized Basil Tilapia. It's full of flavors, the fish is perfectly cooked and very tender with a great texture. I hold off on the white rice but there is plenty available for those who desire it. Also, if you go, make sure you get the Thai Tea as its excellent. Sweet and flavorful as it should be. If you are in the area, definitely consider this place over Top Spice, which happens to be directly across the street, under Rusans'.

The food here is amazing!!! Its always fresh, fast and tasty! The service is always really good and the waitresses, although they don't speak the greatest English, do their best to help in every way possible. As you sit down they automatically give you a cold glass of water and they make sure to keep that glass filled. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it wasn't the "fanciest" place. Its a very plain and casual atmosphere. Lots of people go there on their lunch break from work.

The phrase, "choke and puke" comes to mind. I thought my food had a funky taste to it. My guests actually became mildly ill. There's a reason this place is dead.

WHY HAVE I NOT REVIEWED THIS PLACE YET GUYS!! Oh right, because I live OTP now and rarely get to this end of the town. Last night we were over at Sweetwater enjoying the fabulous brews and I got a hankering for some satay. Since we were so close, we knew we had to visit Bangkok. When my husb stayed in Cabbagetown as a bachelor, we used to visit frequently for the num tok and drunken noodles. Since it'd been a few years I was worried things may have changed, but no! Yay! We got satay and basil rolls and both were super tasty. I haven't had satay in years since it's kind of an intro-to-Thai dish, but man I forgot how good it is! I got drunken noodles with shrimp, Thai hot. They were so salty, sweet, savory, spicy, and..succulent? I don't know, I need another s word. They were ssssss...o good! Nice and spicy burn in my belly, but it wasn't like I was breathing fire. The num tok has the delicious smoky flavor of being grilled, but is also fresh and cooling with the onions and cabbage. It had the right amount of heat and was as good as we remembered. The server was super sweet and efficient and seemed to be handling the crowd single-handedly and doing a fine job. The woman who I think is the owner also came around to fill waters, and she is so darling I want her to be my new grandma. She always says, "Welcome to Atlanta's first Thai restaurant!" Which is adorable, and awesome, and makes me want to eat there all the time. I was really glad they were crowded because I want them to be around forever! I think our bill was like $35 for everything, which is a great deal for a filling, delicious Thai meal. Go there. Now. Invite me.

There's something to be said for a restaurant that has been in business as long as Bangkok Thai. The owner greeted me at the door. (I think he was the owner.) He said, "Here, take this menu. How about that seat over there?" And then on my way out: "How was your food? Simple, good, and fast is the game." He's certainly meeting those goals. My Pad Thai (chicken) was excellent in its simplicity, it hit the table less than five minutes after I ordered, and it really did hit the spot. Simple, good, and fast really will take you a long way. The owner is very friendly, establishing quick rapport with his guests. And there appear to be one or two regulars taking lunch here today, too. Bangkok Thai is clean and casual, with lots of nice light coming in through the windows. It is sparsely decorated. The emphasis is very much on the food. The menu is also something of an exercise in simplicity, with a large handful of Thai "staples" on the menu. Don't be afraid to ask for a little spiciness in your your dishes. And holler if you want some company.

This Thai restaurant was ok. The Tom Yum was very tasty but it was all broth. No chicken or other veggies in there. The fried rice was not fresh. Nam Tok had very little meat. My curry very good however. Place is kind of a dive with no ambiance or mood. Service was ok. Not a real Thai joint in my mind.

I ate here the other night while spending the weekend in Atlanta visiting my friends. I asked them if there was any good Thai food around, and without hesitating they mentioned Bangkok Thai. Now I've had quite my fair share of Thai food between Boston and NYC, but this was seriously some of the best Thai that I've ever tasted! Our server was a very nice Caucasian man that had a great personality and wit about him. He gave us a great overview of how the food is prepared here and answered our questions thoroughly. The Tom yum soup was hands down the best that I've ever had, as well as the pad thai. Between the six of us, we tried several dishes and not one was even mediocre....even the peanut curry sauce rocked! At the end of the meal, a woman, who I think was the owner asked us how everything was and even told us a good joke. Icing on the cake. I usually visit my friends in Atlanta once a year and there is no question that I will come back here every time I'm in town. Until then, I must settle for less in Boston...sigh.

How have I lived in Ansley for a year and not discovered this place?? Had Panang Curry with Tofu and it was absolutely fantastic! Sauce was amazing and perfectly spiced (I chose medium-hot). Will definitely be back to my new favorite Thai place!

Having been to multiple Thai restaurants, this place was a COMPLETE MISS. I feel bad giving this place only 2 stars because the management was amazing, sweet, and friendly, and the Chef was an older lady that eventually came out and greeted out large group hoping the meal was up to par. Despite all that, I'm sad to say that this just did not meet any of our expectations. The pad thai came out looking very white, after I had ordered it spicy, and the flavoring was just not there compared to other Thai places. Boyfriend ordered the Penang and found it hard to eat. Almost everyone at the table but the birthday girl seemed to enjoy their meal. I felt bad since most of the people at the table never ate Thai before, and after this experience, it seemed that the newbies probably won't dine at another Thai restaurant. =/ However, being the oldest Thai restaurant in Atlanta, they gotta be doing something right... I just wasn't able to experience that. Maybe a do-over in the near future.. maybe...

I am not a big fan of Thai food and always tend to stick to drunken noodles.. My husband though likes to try all kinds of curries and this one in partiular Bamboo shoot was just out of the world.. Lovely flavor, perfectly spiced.. I ditched my drunken noodles halfway for the bamboo shoot curry.. Would definitely go back as they had a whole bunch of options for vegetarians and would love to try some other curries..

This was a pretty good thai experience. I don't get over here often, however when I do it's always a pleasurable experience. I have only eaten in the establishment, but pretty solid food. The green curry chicken is awesome and the people who own the place are super sweet!!!

I have had Thai neighbors for 21 years. Hell, I even went to a Thai wedding 3 years ago. I even spent 2 weeks in school learning to cook Thai cuisine. Because of its location, this place is easily visible from Piedmont and trust me, I have done PLENTY of drive bys, which always intrigued me- so I did some more research on it and found out it was the first Thai restaurant in the city. Never gong to a Thai restaurant before (however I have been to Chinese/Thai places), I wanted to invite a few friends, and I wanted to see what they had to offer- and I am glad we all went! I didn't make a reservation, and there were 7 of us. On a whim, they were able to get us a table ready near the back. When I say near the back, I am not saying this place was huge, because it probably has seating for 30 people- its an intimate size. At first when I sat down, I thought the damn seats felt weird. Maybe my weight adjusted it, because I was able to sit down for the next 2 hours, no issues (which is amazing for someone who cannot stop moving). We all ordered our own thing with the intent to share- along with side orders of chicken satays and glass noodles. Damn, they were BOTH great! For main dish, I had the Pad Thai, and I tell you what, the taste reminded me of what I made 7 years ago in school, that beautiful dish that hasn't touched these lips in that long- it was good- now I think about it, I couldn't believe I actually shared :) Every dish I had tasted great, nothing disappointing at all. Then, the owner came to our table, and she kept us company- that really sealed the deal- we were glad to talk to her, as she was glad to hang with us! She told us jokes and stories, and gave us history lessons. She was then cool enough to take our picture and post it to their FB page- way cool! What started as an evening of the unknown turned into an awesome night, thanks to Chai, her staff, and my friends! Oh yea, I forgot to mention the value- it's pretty damn good, I think one plate is over $10 too!

Mama Chai is pretty awesome. She will tell jokes, remember everything about you, play games, do cartwheels, etc. I think her presence made this place more special. I guess she was here since the beginning, 1977, making it one of the oldest Thai Restaurants in Atlanta. One thing that blew my mind was that she knew my name without anyone telling her. I'm trying to figure out how she knew that. I think she was sneaking out in the back listening to us talk and heard one person refer to me by my name. Sneaky woman she is. People comment about her memory. She does make an effort to try to remember your name and what you like. She even keeps notes. I'm sure if I come back here in 25 years, she'll probably remember I got the duck dish with 6 other people. I liked the food here. The food is your standard Thai food. If you like Thai food, this place is a good place to go. Their noodle dishes seems like the best to me. I tried a taste of their drunken noodles, which was made with flat noodles, had lot of great flavor. Also, their Pad Thai tasted top notch. Their curries and such tasted decent. They weren't super hot. I guess being in Atlanta for 35 years made them dumb down some foods. Their other dishes tasted good. They were comparable to the other good Thai restaurants in the city. I think if you're in the area and want Thai food, Bangkok Thai is good as any other place to go. But you get to meet Mama Chai, which feels like a special treat.

Four years later, and we are still coming to Bangkok. We no longer live in Midtown so the restaurant is not a short drive away anymore, but after our latest visit, we promised ourselves to make it down here more often. At least a year or so ago, Jay (the caucasian server that some others might have mentioned) was brought on the staff, and he has been great. Very personable. He always starts off his intro to new diners by pointing out the color of his skin has nothing to do with the authenticity of the restaurant, and it is absolutely true. I'm not clear on whether Chai is THE chef or just one of the chefs, but she makes her food from scratch, and it shows. They always remember us when we come in, no matter how long it has been. I wanted to highlight a few favorites (as well as some new ones) that you should try when you visit. (Yes, WHEN). - Cheese rolls. Hands down, the best appetizer ever. Not just best Thai appetizer, but best appetizer of all time. I said so. - Chicken pad thai. No one has beat Chai's pad thai. - Fried catfish in basil sauce - My new favorite and a "special" of theirs (it's in quotation marks because even though it's up on the board, they have confided in me that it will never leave the board, so think of it as a forever special) -- SOFT SHELL CRAB IN JADE CURRY! - And finally, you must-must-must order the fried ice cream for dessert, no matter how full you feel. It is served with Chai's homemade raspberry sauce, and that stuff is legendary. You know how so many fruit sauces have that syrupy, overly sweet artificial taste? Not this sauce. You could eat it by the spoonful. Please. Go. Now. If you're lucky, Chai will be making the rounds and will regale you with her speech of how Bangkok is the first Thai restaurant in Georgia and poking fun at herself about how she talks too much.

First time dining here. Came in about 9pm for a quick dinner. Ordered Thai tea which was good. Ordered Bangkok special of duck. The portion was small but enough for two if you're not that hungry. The tum lum soup was a bit salty. Server was nice. Price is decent. Might come back if I'm in the area and Craving for Thai food. But personally, I've tasted better Thai cuisines.

We get take out here sometimes and I've eaten in once. It's your typical takeout-y Thai place, but it's definitely tasty. I always get the penang beef or Pad Thai because I feel like being boring, but other things I've tried are also good. The people there are nice, especially when you're waiting for your food. Prices are average.

I thought the taste of the food was pretty good, but expensive for the ratio of actual meat you get. I had the cashew chicken and I felt like there were maybe 6 or so small pieces of shredded type chicken. At $9 I would have expected a little more meat. This is likely not the case for all their dishes though. Other than that, the service was spectacular. I also has the Thai tea which was very good.

My bf and I tried out this restaurant because it was close to his house and I wanted Thai. He mentioned our usual haunts of Surin, Harry & Sons, etc....but, I wanted to try something new. Why oh why? So, we enter the restaurant and it feels like sensory overload....we could hear EVERYONE'S conversations, so the ambiance was definitely not quiet (especially since we could barely hear each other from across the table. Ok, so the food. We started with some soup (standard issue, but good) and Bangkok rolls....nothing to write home about. For our entrees, he ordered the Green/Jade curry and I ordered drunken noodles with shrimp. His green curry was just alright and I believe someone must have been drunk when they made my Drunken noodles. They came out a super dark brown and they were cloyingly sweet - like someone dumped a cup of sugar into the sauce or something. I couldn't even eat them. So, I had to do what I hate doing.....I returned the dish. They remade the Drunken Noodle and what came out looked SO MUCH more appetizing than the first pass. Night and day. But, I was over the entire experience...so we packed it up and the bf had that for lunch the next day. Service was good - but they seem understaffed for a busy weekend night. Basically two servers for like 12 tables....so it was a little spotty, but not horrible. The service was personable and there was a sweet old lady that walked around telling the history of the place. Nice touch, but doesn't offset the food. In summary, don't think I'll be back.....pretty disappointing experience.

There must be better Thai restaurants in Atlanta. It would be well worth your time to seek them out. I got the chicken drunken noodles, a dish that I typically love. However, when this one came out, it looked like a dry, congealed mess. The flavor wasn't terrible but could certainly be better. The dish really just looked like it had been cooked a while and reheated. Also, previous reviewers were correct in that the portion of meat does not match the price of the dish. Finally, ambience was unimpressive. It had a very strip mall feel to it. Also it was far too cold inside. Many people do like it so perhaps other dishes, such as the tilapia, which my friend got, may be a better choice than drunken noodles.

the best thai restaurant in Atlanta .. not pretentious at all ... food is very fresh and made to order ... the owner, chai, is very friendly and visits to make sure your food is great .. I always get the ruby -red curry with tofu thai hot and it's amazing. been in Atlanta 35 years and it BEATS THEM ALL

We ordered take out from here for lunch. My co workers love them, they are both vegetarians. I ordered the Ruby Chicken. When it arrived, it looks more like a soup. Very watery broth. And there was so little chicken. I also asked for mine to be made on the mild side, but it was just a s spicy as my coworkers who asked for "thai hot" Also there are no prices on their online menu and my coworker said they do not have menus you can take home. When I called for the price I was quoted $7.50, but I was charged $10.75 :/

Bangkok Thai Restaurant is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Thai restaurants in Atlanta. The menu says they've been open since 1977. The restaurant is located next to Ansley Mall near one of my favorite Thai restaurants, King and I. Across the street is Top Spice (Thai and Malaysian cuisine), so there are a lot of good options for Thai food near Ansley Park. If presentation and ambiance are your thing, go to Top Spice. If you want great Thai food for dine-in or take-out, go with King and I. If you want outstanding and friendly service, Bangkok Thai trumps both. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere. It's a sit-down place, but the decor is minimal. You're coming here strictly for the food. They could stand to update the interior, but I thought that to myself when I first stepped inside 10+ years ago. Window treatments are nothing more than standard metal blinds, giving you a glimpse of the sometimes-seedy parking lot and Piedmont Ave. Bangkok Thai's menu is reasonably and competitively priced (for good reason). It has most of the main Thai staples from curry to noodles. They've renamed some common dishes. For example, their red and green curries are called "Ruby" and "Jade" curries, respectively. The tom kha (coconut) soups are called "Fowl Play" soups. Here are some items I've tried at this restaurant and are worth a look: Appetizers: Satay - skewered chicken served with peanut sauce and spices Yum Woon Sen - bean thread noodles with ground pork, onion, scallions, lime juice, and hot chili Specials/Curries: Spicy Catfish - served with curry sauce, basil, and bell pepper Panang Curry - coconut milk-based curry Beverage: Thai Tea - served with ice and sweetened with sugar and condensed milk I like the condiments served with the Satay. Along with sweet peanut sauce, it also comes with a small dish of chopped, vinegared vegetables such as cucumber and red onion. The chicken was tender and moist enough. The Yum Woon Sen noodles are made out of mung bean. They're a clear, thinner, and more slippery noodle. This dish is normally served with shrimp, but I ordered mine without. It's a sour and spicy app. Both the Spicy Catfish and Panang Curry were OK. The catfish filets were deep-fried and rather succulent. I had the Panang Curry with chicken, though you can have it served with pork, beef, shrimp, or tofu too. The chicken was rubbery, but the sauce was good. Mild and creamy. Generally, food was alright, but presentation could be more appealing. Thai Tea was amazing. Mix vigorously. Try and enjoy it or you'll drink it too fast and have to order another. Bangkok Thai is open five days a week for lunch, seven days a week for dinner. Expanded specials menu on Sundays (though not street food like Thaicoon).

The Penang curry was watered down and didn't have much tofu or vegetables in it. We also got the basil tofu and it was terrible - mostly just onions with a few pieces of bell pepper and only four pieces of tofu! The tofu in all the dishes was tough and rubbery. The Drunken noodles weren't bad. We don't plan on going back!

I came here with a group of friends for a friend's birthday. I've heard of the restaurant before and I even checked Yelp reviews before visiting the restaurant so I had high expectations of it. The lighting in the establishment is sort of dim. Everything is moderately priced, however, for the amount of food you get, it's not worth it. I ordered Pad Thai and the noodles, I believe, were overcooked. The amount of noodles I got were half of the plate. At other Thai restaurants that I've visited, it's usually way more than that. I look around the table, and I guess normally that's how their portions are at Bangkok Thai. I also noticed that they only put like three shrimps in some of the dishes that are shrimp dishes. Some of my friends said that they that liked the dishes they ordered. The management and staff are really nice. Mama Chai came out to speak to us about the history and even remembered the birthday girl's name. She told us that she cooked all of our dishes. Overall, I believe that if I try other dishes here, such as their curry, I might grow to like the establishment. I also believe that maybe because there was a table of about 15 people, it was difficult for Mama Chai to get out all of the food at the same time and in orderly fashion. If I came here with just my boyfriend and I, it would probably be a better experience.

The Pandang Curry at this place is to die for. The coconutty goodness of this stuff is legendary. It is pricey but its enough to last two days with a little extra rice. The people that work there are super friendly. Good experience.

4 star average rating...? Had a less than divine experience here. Have to agree with Judy L.'s review. First of all, I was surprised to not see Pad See Ew anywhere on the menu.. how can you have not have Pad See Ew at a Thai restaurant? I didn't actually ask the server about it though, so I don't know if they gave it some other "fun" name. I ordered the "Oodles of Noodles" and given its name I was expecting to get oodles of them. It was just the opposite, a really miniscule portion, like a little more than the size of my palm. I explained to our waiter and he took my dish back and had more noodles cooked into my dish, which I was happy about. I would give 3.5 stars for taste. Even despite getting more noodles, I was still hungry after finishing my dish. My husband was hungry after his dish as well, and we ended up grabbing some McDonald's on the way home. We're used to Thai restaurants having huge portions and taking leftovers home. To my surprise, when the bill came, I was charged a dollar for the extra noodles. The owner and waiter were very friendly, and the owner explained that 2 of their usual cooks were out unexpectedly (which led to a longer than normal wait time, per her), so maybe that had something to do with it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I will be back : (

Great Thai food. Nothing fancy in means of ambience but the food is great and good prices. Beef drunken noodles, mixed curry and mango sticky rice were excellent. Their spice level runs on the milder style so order higher than expected. Or they brought out sauce and spice to make it to our liking. Only one hot sake that wasn't great stick with the Singha.

The people who work here are so nice, and the owner is absolutely precious, but sadly it doesn't help the food. I ordered tom yum soup with chicken, and chicken pad kee mao, both with a spice level of hot. The tom yum soup came through, it was perfectly spicy and sour and I was anticipating that the entree would be spicy enough. Nope. The pad kee mao was just greasy and bland. There was absolutely no spice to it, but thankfully that was fixable with the condiments brought to the table. I seriously could not pinpoint any flavors in the dish beyond vegetables and usually the sauce is one of my favorite parts of this dish :( At least spicing it up gave it a bit of flavor. My boyfriend's panang curry, which he asked for "beyond Thai hot" was just as mild as my drunken noodles. I definitely would say 2.5 stars but I'm rounding up because the service was so good and I really would feel bad giving it just 2 stars. One of the other pluses though: you get just the right amount of Thai iced tea, which costs only $1.75.

Just came here a week ago and really liked it! I had the drunken noddles with shrimps and it was really good! I also had the Bangkok rolls and I loved them! They were so good with the peanut sauce! The owner (or just employee) was also nice and funny. I highly recommend this place :-)

I don't think I'll be coming back. The pad thai just wasn't good. The noodles were overcooked and mushy, and the balance in flavor was off. It was overly sweet, yet left a strange salty after taste. I think they may have used salted peanuts in the garnish; I don't know, but it was strange. I couldn't place what kind of saltiness it was, but I don't think it was from fish sauce. I think the biggest downfall was the complete lack of spice. I'm not saying it has to be spicy, but I don't think they used any chili pepper at all. They didn't even ask me for a spice level. The people who work there are really nice and the atmosphere is fine, but I'm awfully disappointed with my dish.

The food is pretty good, and affordable. The service is great. Everyone is very patient, and they check in with you often. And, while this is probably isn't great for the restaurant, if you go in there for dinner around 6:00, you get to sit anywhere you want, because the traffic is light. It seems they're taking more and more pickup orders. In the time I was there, I saw at least 3 people come in and go with their food. I guess more and more people want fast food that doesn't taste like it came from a drive-thru.

I'm a sucker for Drunken Noodles, and so we went her while we were out one day. The noodles were fine, but not really what I was expecting. It was also DEAD inside -- I don't know how it stays open unless we were just there at an off-peak time. The music (modernish pop?) was also a little off-putting. It was too loud and felt inconsistent with the theme of the restaurant.

It isn't fancy or trendy, but if you want reliably good thai food made just how you like it, Bangkok is the place to go. The staff is warm and friendly, the food is delicious, and the owner is charming and adorable, as if she's out to ensure everyone has a better day for stopping in. I like that. Coupled with great prices and easily within walking distance, and I'm sold.

We came in here as to get a break from the other asian places in the area and I always wanted to check this place out. Upon looking at the menu and immediately looking for my favorite go to Pad see ew, I noticed it wasn't on the menu. I asked though and they were happy to make it for me. I got the coconut soup and also tried some of the pad thai. The food wasn't the best thai I have had, but its certainly a great deal for the price as all the items are below 10 bucks here.

Good and basic Thai food at "the oldest Thai restaurant in Atlanta"--if that is really a distinction worth making . . . Nice location (next to Burkhart's in the Ansley Mall area) and friendly staff. The entrees took a while to get to our table, however.

Very generous portions, low prices, fast take-out (usually 10 or, at most, 15 minutes), very flavorful food and friendly, attentive service. I haven't eaten at the restaurant yet, only take-out. Our family's favorites are vegetarian fresh basil rolls, massaman with vegetables, thai tofu (vegetarian), and vegetable fried rice. I drive past other thai restaurants nearby on my way here, it's that good.

Heather N.
The special curry with chicken and shrimp is perfection- just the right amount of heat and lots of fresh veggies. I agree that the Pad Thai is sweet, and I think it actually has a bit of coconut in it, but I still like it. Plus, it is very cheap. Always a bonus...
(4)
Sarah N.
The take-out service here was very friendly and super quick - which was great! Unfortunately, their massaman chicken was pretty bland (and the primary taste was the abundance of green peppers). I'd be willing to give them another chance, but my hopes aren't super high...

BEST THAI RESTAURANT EVER. I miss them so much and wish I could bring them to California with me. Chai is the kindest, most gracious host, and I miss her dearly. The food is amazing. I kinda don't want everyone to know how awesome this place is, but I'm all for seeing them continue to thrive. I've never had a bad dish at this place. The tilapia is delicious, the pad thai is awesome, as are the massaman and penang curries. Chicken, beef, it doesn't matter. This place rocks. Don't let the fact that it's empty in the evening fool you. I think this place remains one of Atlanta's best kept secrets.

Great lunch place! Fantastic prices, natural/authentic thai food, and excellent plum wine. Will definitely be back

Went there for lunch today...prices were very reasonable, and the food was pretty good. The main problem was the smell. Apparently there is something above the restaurant that produces a strong smell, almost like turpentine, that can make you quite nauseated and lightheaded. This makes it hard to enjoy the food. Paul is a very chatty waiter/owner; if you don't like being interrupted, you might want to go elsewhere. I was about to ask for a recommendation between two dishes, but Paul basically decided for me (not really what I wanted). He brought both me and my friend the same dish, spicy chicken and vegetables.

This place is somewhat cheap for Thai food, and you get what you pay for. The decor is old and outdated. The service was perfectly adequate, if not slightly over-bearing. I was there with a friend on a Tuesday night and the place was absolutely dead at 8 PM. It kind of felt like the staff was listening to our conversation. Another couple came in shortly after us and it was quiet enough in the restaurant that the other couple was blatantly laughing at us and our conversation. I realize that this is not necessarily the restaurant's fault, but it made it awkward. We ordered a chicken panang curry and a ruby vegetable curry and ordered "Thai spicy." Knowing that restaurants don't tend to trust first time customers who actually want spicy food, I didn't expect to get anything remotely close to spicy. The spice level was even lower than my expectations. They gave us pepper to add to it, but I've found that just randomly adding pepper doesn't help and kills whatever flavor is in the curry. The flavors were not complex by any means; we didn't experience that subtly in the flavor that I have come to expect from curries. There are a lot of decent places for Thai in this part of Atlanta, so I would recommend passing on this restaurant.

Ok, it is very difficult for me to give five stars. The only reason I am not giving this place five stars is because of the atmosphere. I don't think they have updated the place since they opened. They are the first Thai restaruant in Atlanta, and their food is great. I think I have said Thai food is my favorite. I love their panang curry with shrimp. It is really tasty. The price is good too for those on a budget. Everybody should be on a budget now a days. Also, the owner is really nice and she knows me and my husband by name.

This was todays lunch. 3 stars is admittedly unfair......if I could give half I would bump them up to 3.5. The problem is this............Bangkok has Top Spice across the street and The King and I next door. Then there are other top notch Thai options in Decatur (Thai Me Up) and Tucker (Yum Yum Thai) and Chamblee (Penang). Its a good restaurant that would be more than just good if the service, decor, and menu measured up to the others in its weight class.....and I would have been more generous probably if I wasnt a little over a month removed from having my socks knocked off in Daytona at Zen. only complaints were that the Thai Tea was fairly pedestrian, and my Drunken Noodles were more greasy than flavorful. And I like heat in my Thai, but I want it to be behind the scenes, not with major jalapenos getting in the way of the noodle and shrimp experience. But please dont let my bias deter you. The prices are excellent, the service is very good and personable, and the place gets a consistent good lunch crowd considering there are so many other options nearby in a tough economy.

As a lover of Thai cuisine I must say I have found an eatery that I frequent for excellent eats. It helps that this place is less than a mile from me, but if it were across town I would continue my trend of eating here several times per month. Their curry (Ruby Curry is my favorite) is excellent...AND consistent. Also you MUST try their basil rolls hands down the best I've had. Although their decor is somewhat dated I really don't think it should matter. This restaurant is always spotless and their food is terrific. The owners are always in the restaurant and it seems as if all or nearly all of the employees are family. I can't say enough about how nice and polite they are. 4.5 stars.

They might not know my name, but they know my face - and they remember my favorite order here. Friendliness goes a lonnnng way with me. It doesn't mean I'll eat slop, but if you put a plate of honest food in front of me and make me feel like a customer(!) I might actually return. I feel like a customer here. Valued. What a concept. The food here is a notch above the standard family Thai - more balanced and made with a decidedly lighter touch than, say, Little Bangkok on Cheshire Bridge. And while the Cheshire Smiles are frequent, none are as sincere and sustained as on the very nice, quiet woman who owns and operates this restaurant. Recommended if you're in the area and want an unpretentious Thai experience. (NOTE TO THE OWNER: Can we please 86 the elevator muzak?)

I have always loved this place wish it were closer to my home these days no good thai places in Decatur. Yes the cheese rolls another person wrote on here are in a word incredible. The basil rolls arent bad either but they dont serve them for lunch. The dishes well like other I love the pad Thai too, they also have Bangkok duck which is really good ask for extra eggs. The coco soup not for lunch but if you ask and they have it they will give it to you. There is a reason why this place has been here as long as it has, no it doest have the decore of a fancy midtown restaurant like Nam, but the prices are better and so is the food.

Hmm yeah... this place just doesn't compete with the other offerings in midtown.

Let's start with trivia. This is the first thai restauant in Georgia established in 1977. How do I know this? It says so on the the front cover of the menu, and I believe them. Our waitress, whom I think was the owner told us the same thing. Now the food. The tom yom soup was the best I've had in Atlanta. I ordered it thai chili style which means extra spicy. The jalapenos floating around were a nice touch. The panang curry and ruby red curry were both tasty and everything you would expect from good thai curry. My favorite dish was the rama which was chicken stir fry with vegetables. We also ordered the shrimp basilia which was kind of bland ,and I would not order this again. Come here for the food, not atmosphere. Better food than top spice located across the street but not as nice inside. The soup will keep me coming back for more.

I went to this place for the first time on 1/21/11. I'll never go back to "Nan's." This place is just as good for half the price. The ambiance is not great, but ambiance is pretty much what you pay for at "Nan's" if you really think about it.

Mediocre, at best We read the decent reviews here on Yelp and ordinarily the site steers us in the right direction but, this time, we felt the reviews way, way off. First, let me start with the good: the proprietress was extremely friendly, sweet and charming. The bad: small portions, skimpy ingredients, bland flavoring on every dish. I'll clarify the "bland" comment: Thai food, well done, has both complex and subtle flavoring. Just because a dish is loaded with pepper, doesn't mean it's flavorful. Really bad: served cheap, low-grade rice, NO JASMINE RICE !! We moved here from San Francisco and are used to excellent Thai food. We also spent a number of months travelling throughout Thailand. In addition, one of my very good girlfriends in SF is Thai and has cooked me home-cooked Thai dishes. With that said, I think we are qualified to rate decent Thai food. In any industry, especially food-related, one must keep their game up, or retire from the business. The proprietress at Bangkok seems to have all but given up. Please also note that I'm no spring chicken, but have had to reinvent myself in business quite a number of times in order to be successful. Even if our visit was an aberration, we will not return. There are far too many excellent Asian restaurants in the CIty of Atlanta to patronize this establishment. NOT RECOMMENDED

This place is semi-decent if you are looking for an Americanized Asian restaurant. It can't really be called a Thai place because what kind of Thai Restaurant does NOT serve Papaya salad....first for me.....Service was ok....staff is friendly....can't say the same for the food....and I am a very big fan of Thai food.

Went with some friends the other night. From what I was told Bangkok Thai is the first Thai restaurant in Georgia and has been around since 1977. WOW! I ordered their basil rolls for appetizer which was very fresh and tasty with their peanut sauce. For the main course I had their Ruby Curry Chicken to which I added cabbage, broccoli and carrots, and it already came with other veggies. The curry was so flavorful and light. Some thai places the curry can be thick and fatty tasting....but the curry at Bangkok was light and tasty. I didn't have enough heat to my curry because I was sharing the meal; however once I added the red chilli powder for that extra kick.....it was perfect. The penang chicken was light and tasty as well. Come to think of it......next time I think I will just ask them to put fresh jalapenos in with the curry for that extra kick and sweat! Service was good.....they were very attentive. The ambiance......ummm....none really. It is just a plain ol hole in the wall restaurant, which usually serve some of the best food. I will definitely go back because there is still lots I want to try.

I live right down the street from Bangkok but had never been because I always go to Top Spice. I like to consider myself loyal to good restaurants so I felt a little guilty when I went to Bangkok instead yesterday simply due to proximity (I was walking home from the gym and they're on my side of the street) to pick up my Thai staple: red curry tofu. I didn't even eat in the restaurant but I can now say that Bangkok will be my new go-to for my (almost) weekly Thai fix. The woman (I think her name is Louise?) who took my order to go was awesome! While I was waiting for my food she took me back to show me her garden which included Thai basil and lemongrass that they often use in their dishes. She also gave me a bouquet of gardenias to take home with me! My hands were pretty full when I was leaving but it was well worth it. The food was good - much spicier than Top Spice. Overall the atmosphere inside wasn't special but the food definitely seems authentic and the service is excellent and genuine.

I used to eat lunch here years ago with co-workers when I worked in Midtown. I happened to be in the area today and went to Bangkok for lunch. It is just as good as it was in the 90's except that it is a little less crowded. This was the first place that I ever ate Pad-Thai. No other restaurant has ever measured up to this one.

I have always loved Bangkok - been going here for 13 yrs+. Four words for you: Order...The....Cheese....Rolls. My friends & I always get our own order {2 rolls} to start our meal. So very yummy. Filled with cream cheese, very finely ground carrot & I believe some finely ground shrimp. Served with a sweet/spicy dipping sauce. The servers here are all very nice, although one of our favorites moved to NY last year. She always knew our order. I tend to change up what I get from time to time, but 90% of the time I get their Pad Thai. I really love their version. They have great coconut soup & if you order it hot, you're gonna get it! I got mine Thai-hot on a dare once - won't do that again ;-0 I also like their Thai Pasta, Jade Curry, Cashew Nut Chicken, Basilia, & Curry Fried Rice. And their Thai Iced Tea is such a tasty treat. Sorry about the other posters who don't find Bangkok sophisticated enough for their palates. It works well for me & will continue to!! More cheese rolls for me, then - lol

HHHOOOONK!

Kopkunkhop!

Hmm yeah... this place just doesn't compete with the other offerings in midtown.

(5)Michelle R.

Kopkunkhop!

Fantastic curry and the sweetest wait staff around. Can't beat the combination of great food and service.

Go there. Now. Invite me.

Loveee this place! Friendly staff, fast takeout, and delicious Thai! Ruby curry rocks. :)))

(2)Jessica R.
Service was good and friendly but the food was definitely not worth going back for. There are much better Thai options.
(2)Brady B.
(5)Mindy P.
How have I lived in Ansley for a year and not discovered this place?? Had Panang Curry with Tofu and it was absolutely fantastic! Sauce was amazing and perfectly spiced (I chose medium-hot). Will definitely be back to my new favorite Thai place!
(5)Lisa Y.
Maybe a do-over in the near future.. maybe...
(2)Anushree K.
(4)Ashley W.

(5)Jang C.

(4)Marcus P.
The food was amazing !!!!! And the sweet and sour sauce was great... the owner is so nice and sweet.
(4)Christine U.
(3)Rebecca O.

(2)J B.
the best thai restaurant in Atlanta .. not pretentious at all ... food is very fresh and made to order ... the owner, chai, is very friendly and visits to make sure your food is great .. I always get the ruby -red curry with tofu thai hot and it's amazing. been in Atlanta 35 years and it BEATS THEM ALL
(5)Sasha O.

(3)Diane W.
(1)Judy L.
(3)Charlene J.
The Pandang Curry at this place is to die for. The coconutty goodness of this stuff is legendary. It is pricey but its enough to last two days with a little extra rice. The people that work there are super friendly. Good experience.
(5)Maria L.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure I will be back : (
(2)Marcie S.
(4)Amanda D.
(3)Thanh N.
Just came here a week ago and really liked it! I had the drunken noddles with shrimps and it was really good! I also had the Bangkok rolls and I loved them! They were so good with the peanut sauce! The owner (or just employee) was also nice and funny. I highly recommend this place :-)
(5)Greg R.
I have been here a couple times in the past and the service was so so but tonight it was totally different. The decor could use updating but the food and service was great. I will be back.
(4)Ray L.
(2)Katrina M.
(4)Ben K.
(3)Eileen S.
Chia ( owner) Is amazing and her staff as well!! the food was good my only compliant is that the portions where smaller then expected for the price! Overall I will be returning If I am in the area again!
(4)Wolfgirl E.
(4)Jeremy A.
(3)Terry F.
Good and basic Thai food at "the oldest Thai restaurant in Atlanta"--if that is really a distinction worth making . . . Nice location (next to Burkhart's in the Ansley Mall area) and friendly staff. The entrees took a while to get to our table, however.
(3)Daniel B.
(5)Heather N.
The special curry with chicken and shrimp is perfection- just the right amount of heat and lots of fresh veggies. I agree that the Pad Thai is sweet, and I think it actually has a bit of coconut in it, but I still like it. Plus, it is very cheap. Always a bonus...
(4)Sarah N.

Will definitely be back
(5)David Z.
(3)Tabitha O.
Great food, great service! They will accommodate any request. The food is some of the best thai I've ever had. Try the cheese rolls, pad thai & plink king spicy!
(5)Cara B.
(2)Stephanie C.
(4)Claude L.
(3)Adam D.
4.5 stars.
(4)Patrick C.
(3)Hilary D.
(5)J P.
Hmm yeah... this place just doesn't compete with the other offerings in midtown.
(2)Nehal P.
(4)Nick T.
This place has great food at a very reasonable price.
(5)DJ V.

(1)Reuben R.
This restaurant is amazing. Always remember to ask for Chai. She makes this place feel like home!
(5)Rick L.
(2)Aanal P.
(4)johnny l.
This place was great, the service was phenomenal and our server who I'm going to assume was the matron of the place was saccharinely sweet. the fresh rolls were delicious and my curry was good, and it was very cheap, i highly recommend
(4)Kara H.
(4)Wayne J.
(5)Peony S.
I will keep it simple. Great food, the owner takes the time to circulate and see how you like your food, the location is central, inexpensive, and there is plenty of parking. What else could you ask for in Atlanta?
(5)Laura T.
(4)Tabitha O.
Great food, great service! They will accommodate any request. The food is some of the best thai I've ever had. Try the cheese rolls, pad thai & plink king spicy!
(5)Edward S.
The owner of this place is the nicest little lady! This is our go-to place for take-out. They give us a ton of food at a pretty low price that my Thai wife says is pretty authentic. If you want a solid meal at a good price, go here every time!
(5)Lynn E.
Friendly, right-price, tasty. What else do you need or want in a neighborhood eatery?!? We enjoyed our pad thai and masuman chicken curry. Plan to go back to try other selections from the menu.
(3)Jean S.
Cheap & good Asian food!
(4)Nick T.
This place has great food at a very reasonable price.
(5)Terry F.
(4)Michelle R.
(5)DJ V.

HHHOOOONK! I won't be back.

very friendly and cheerful service. The servers really treat you well. The owner also came to our table to make sure we enjoyed the food. I thought all the food was really very tasty, but it had a light, home-cooked vibe to it. Also, the interior is quaint but shabby.
(3)Sarah N.
The take-out service here was very friendly and super quick - which was great! Unfortunately, their massaman chicken was pretty bland (and the primary taste was the abundance of green peppers). I'd be willing to give them another chance, but my hopes aren't super high...
(3)Frances A.
(5)C W.
Great lunch place! Fantastic prices, natural/authentic thai food, and excellent plum wine. Will definitely be back
(5)David Z.
(3)Brent B.
Kopkunkhop!
(5)Rob B.
Fantastic curry and the sweetest wait staff around. Can't beat the combination of great food and service.
(5)Stephanie C.

(4)Marcus P.
The food was amazing !!!!! And the sweet and sour sauce was great... the owner is so nice and sweet.
(4)Christine U.
(3)Jessica R.
Service was good and friendly but the food was definitely not worth going back for. There are much better Thai options.
(2)Eileen S.
Chia ( owner) Is amazing and her staff as well!! the food was good my only compliant is that the portions where smaller then expected for the price! Overall I will be returning If I am in the area again!

Go there. Now. Invite me.

Loveee this place! Friendly staff, fast takeout, and delicious Thai! Ruby curry rocks. :)))

I always get the ruby -red curry with tofu thai hot and it's amazing. been in Atlanta 35 years and it BEATS THEM ALL
(5)Sasha O.

(1)Rebecca O.
(3)Judy L.
(3)Charlene J.
The Pandang Curry at this place is to die for. The coconutty goodness of this stuff is legendary. It is pricey but its enough to last two days with a little extra rice. The people that work there are super friendly. Good experience.
(5)Maria L.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure I will be back : (
(2)Marcie S.
(4)Amanda D.
(4)Ray L.
(2)Katrina M.
(4)Ben K.
(3)Wolfgirl E.
(4)Jeremy A.
(3)Sally S.
