A pleasant new surprise. The restaurant welcomes you with a uniquely painted street art interior which gives the restaurant an edgy contemporary flair. The food is solid and the margaritas were tasty (yet a bit light on tequila. I had the organic). The restaurant is family oriented with Xbox stations set up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (after 6pm) so after the kids eat mom and dad get a little "date night" time. On the weekends, they also have a band, which added to the fun, bustling atmosphere. Nice addition to the area!

Wow! This place is a hidden gem. If the world new, it would be slammed at lunch. The food is delicious, the prices are awesome. But what keeps people coming back is the incredible service. Today at lunch I was commenting to a coworker how my phone was dead. Didn't think it all about the fact that the manager was standing nearby. He went and got his own personal phone charger and brought it to me! I was speechless. He brought over a little rack for all of the ladies to hang their purses on. That kind of customer service is crazy cool. Don't let the strip mall look for you. This place is top notch.

Everything I've tried here has been delicious. I love that the food isn't too greasy or heavy. Both the cold and warm salsas are the best I have ever had in my life. They keep me coming back. Great prices for beer. Friendly employees!

Writing this as i wait for my check. .. my order was wrong Plastic found in my food Wobbly table Incredibly warm inside the restaurant Addressed all the issues with the wait staff. .. but no one from management came to address my concerns. We've been going here for a while but until leadership addresses my concerns...no more! ... glad that la luguna opened a location nearby!

This is for my experience in mid-Feb 2015. My first impression after walking in was the storefront belies the interior. El Don feels like a huge space...like walking into a mall food-court. To my right, far right, there was a band playing on a stage. To my left, and not so near left, there was a wall-sized TV of football. There were booths along the perimeter and tables in the open-space. There was a bar in the corner decorated in polished, steel diamond-plate. The hallway to the RRs were decorated with florescent paint / artwork and illuminated with blacklights. The food was okay, the service and mgmt attentiveness get four-stars. However the overall theme of the space is over my head. Obviously I was expecting something different. But pay me no mind, go have your own experience. El Don might just be your cup 'o tea.

Really enjoy the food and good service. Hard to carry on a conversation with the loud music though.

Came here for a Forsyth County Chamber Meeting & WOW was I surprised. I had the fajitas and was absolutely stunned at the quality. The veggies were fresh and the steak was a thicker cut steak unlike many places that use the paper thin stuff. GREAT Food & Friendly service!

Just visited over Labor Day and really enjoyed it. The food was excellent, servers very competent and the prices are reasonable. The experience was great and the value even greater. So many local Mexican spots are lowering the quality of food and service while raising their prices, El Don is the exact opposite.

Second trip to El Don. Food was good, margaritas need to be enhanced with Gran Gala. Music was too loud. The place still reminds me of a sports bar. The tables have been covered with cloths. They place still reminds me of a warehouse with tables placed around. Not much Mexican atmosphere.

Been here several times with my husband. Very friendly staff, we love the nachos they serve for all tables, crispy and warm with sauces. Our favorite is the burrito al carbon, the meat is really special, delicious! I recommend !

We discovered El Don after looking on Yelp for another option for Mexican in Alpharetta. The atmosphere is festive and casual, with brightly colored linens and decor. The food we had was flavorful, plentiful in portion, and fresh. We ordered an item from the "special" menu after being advised by a regular customer...it's similar to fajitas, but included a sampling of shrimp, chicken, steak, Mexican fried cheese, peppers, onions, and chorizo...all in a cast iron bowl on a stand. Beans, rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and lettuce accompanied it, along with tortillas (corn or flour). We enjoyed that a pitcher of Texas Margaritas on the rocks, too. They serve fresh chips and salsa when you're first seated....and there was no line on a Friday at 6:30! They have a band on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a good number of XBoxes set up with games for the kids who are looking for something else to do besides eat. It was date night for us, but it is definitely a family friendly place---all ages. Service was great...and what more can I say? We will definitely be back!

"Roses are red, violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic... and so am I!" Bill Murray as Bob, What About Bob El Don seems equally schizophrenic. When you walk in your amygdala will immediately try to determine the correct fight/flight/freeze response as you face a stage and dance floor on one side, a giant sports screen on the other, an enormous mural in front of you, and an odd group of booths in the middle. I have seen the stage used for Mexican karaoke as well as live music by a solo performer playing The Beatles and Zeppelin. The crowd has fluctuated from 90% Hispanic one evening, to endless kids tables on the weekend. The big screen is surrounded by football helmets which seem to have absolutely no place in a Mexican restaurant. The mural is awesome and I was told the artist has done some work for The Walking Dead. The bathroom on the other hand has pictures of elephants and Giraffes, which I don't ever remember seeing in my trips to Mexico. Confused. If it is not full fledged schizophrenia, El Don at least borders on a personality disorder as it tries to figure out if it is a sports bar, a Mexican club, or a family restaurant. As eclectic as the decor are the employees. Some young, some older, some Hispanic, some gringos. All the employees are friendly and stay busy. The manager is involved in the operation and it shows all the way through service. What requires no radical therapy at El Don however is the food. I have had the Chiles Poblanos, enchiladas, and burritos. All terrific. I am sure El Don will eventually figure out its direction and customer base, and if the service and food remain consistent I will always remain a fan! El Don has great food, Good flavor, good quality and quantity, and fair prices. Something both sides of my brain can agree on!

Great Mexican food and awesome atmosphere... They have got live music, video games for your kids... Great bar.. It's a bit on the pricey side... It's a place where you would like to go back multiple times. Love Carne Asada, Tacos which you can mix n match, but my favorite is MOJARRA FRITA...

El Don is a newer mexican place in north Alpharetta. The first thing I don't really like about this place, is that it opened right next to another Mexican restaurant that has been in that shopping center for a few years, AND it's the best. Anyway, the food at El Don was good enough. I liked the cheese enchiladas and the sauce they used was pretty tasty. I didn't like the menu because they had like 2 vegetarian options. Usually mexican places have a whole vegetarian section on their menu, but they don't, which is kind of annoying. Anyway, the inside of this place is huge and decked out. The staff we encountered were all friendly and nice, and the service was very fast. We used our scoutmob deal so that was nice, but I am not sure I would go back and pay full price. All in all, it was okay.

This place is really beautiful on the inside. It is in a strip mall but they have beautiful wall murals, paintings and TV's everywhere. This would be a perfect place to watch major football games and soccer matches. I had the chicken chimichanga with cheese dip poured over top, guacamole, sour cream on the side. so yummy!

I've been to 6 or 7 Mexican restaurants in the area and this one is my favorite. They have excellent corn and flour tortillas. The fajitas are great. They have two great salsas that come with your chips.

Double-check your bill! We enjoy El Don. The atmosphere, food and service are great. However, we have caught four discrepancies on our bill with different waiters. Each time the bill had food not ordered, or charged a different amount then the bill. If it happens once, it could be a mistake. Four times makes me suspicious of the restaurant's practices.

This is a great authentic mexican restaurant. (maybe best in Atlanta ) Try the chilaquiles with chicken ( the best I've had since Mexico ) Service is good. Will prepare any mexican food you want.

The food here is a clear cut above that of other Mexican restaurants in the area. The mojarra frita (fried whole tilapia) is both flavorful and crispy, and I also love the tilapia tacos, topped with a wonderfully smoky chipotle salsa. I'm not sure I understand all the angst about sports on TV (which just about every restaurant you walk into has these days), the size of the place, or the stage. If it's about the food, you'll enjoy El Don.

The molcajete, after a half-marathon, is a godsend. Even without the miles, the food is typical Tex-Mex jacked up to 11. Make sure if you like spicy that you request the avocado salsa.

Great food great place, outside deck you might want wait until night time. Flies are brutal this time of year. Hopefully they will put some fans up to help with that. Awsome place, will return many times!!!!!!!!

[TL;DR] a new(ish) mexican restaurant/sports bar/dance floor with a fresh taste. this place wants to be a little bit of everything. once you step inside, you'll see what i mean. it's a bit distressing at first because the restaurant just seems expansive. the table layout just seemed awkward, like you are the lone diner and once seated, they'd turn a spotlight on you. there appears to be a what turns into a dance floor, a disco light, and a dj bar on one side. there's also a stage for a band. i think they're going for entertainment. :-) if that wasn't apparent enough, televisions everywhere, a giant screen on one wall, etc. nice place to catch a world cup game. okay, so back to the food. dined on a coupon special so i had to stick to the combination specials. i wasn't disappointed. i was actually pleasantly surprised. the chili relleno and the chili con queso stood out. way delicious. the chips are the thin and crispy style (think chili's or la parilla.) hard to complain about a place that serves two types of salsa. the roasted tomato salsa is served warm, giving contrast to the typical, colder, spicier cousin. sounds like a soap opera. let me see if i can remember all of the daily specials. these are from memory so you definitely will want to call and confirm: m - kids eat free (so you won't find me there that day) t - (removed cuz some people are super cheap and super cheap tippers) w - karaoke night i think th - $.50 wings, i think f, sa - live music (another night i'll avoid)

I have passed this place on many occasions and I finally got the opportunity to try it. It sits way back in a strip center, so it's not easily visible from the road. It was about 2:00PM on a Sunday and the lunch crowd had already cleared out, so I was seated right away. The waiter took my drink order and I was checked on by every employee that passed my table. Very friendly and attentive. The chips are the thin crispy kind and they serve two salsas. The red is good but the dark was EXCELLENT and it's served warm. I ordered the ENCHILADA SUPREMA plate (Four enchiladas chicken, cheese, beef and beans. Topped with lettuce, sour cream and tomato), and wasn't disappointed. I have found another favorite and will return often.

Yay I'm a fan says it all. Party of five and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I think that based on tastes around the table that skirt steak was the best of the bunch, but everything looked and tasted great. Service was a bit slow but it Friday night and busy.

Great food and service! Loved the margaritas too except they came in a small mason jar mug? Very clean (which is not the norm for most Mexican joints) and a beautiful bar! I am really surprised with the lack of customers though it has great space for live music and trivia...the location kind of sucks because it's hard to see from the road...but I think maybe with a little more advertising and more events this place would be amazing! The salsa could use a little LESS garlic though (sorry I'm a salsa snob :p)

Outstanding and finally! Not only is the food and service great but their live music is fantastic! A little more volume on the vocals would be great!

Food was great and drink was awesome! Largest margarita I ever had in my life. My kids were able to eat free. I will definitely be back. Possibly my new "go to" Mexican restaurant. I am even considering having a party there because the atmosphere is very cool. The best part for me is that it is less than 5 min from my home. Great food, great drinks, great service makes for a local restaurant. I totally forgot the roasted salsa! This the absolute best salsa I have ever tasted. The waitress said that it is made made fresh daily. I believe her because the taste is unique.

Big place with live music, games for the kids, lots of screens for sports. The service is friendly-- above & beyond. Food is fresh and the salsa is not the extra hot. It's flavorful and just the right spice.

I have been to El Don once for dinner and today for lunch. Both times the food and service were excellent! You cannot put El Porton in the same league with this place. Their menu has a much bigger variety to choose from and it just seems fresh. I think they have live music a lot of evenings. Prices are competitive and good prices for lunch. They gave us a complimentary spicy green salsa that was awesome! I hope they stay in business for a long time because I tire of El Porton. The server said they will be starting delivery soon.

I love, love, love good Mexican food. Spent 32 years in California and ate my first whole jalapeño at age 12. Been to most of the N. Fulton Mexican eateries and the food has been fair to good. Crispy chips but the two salsa offerings was average. I like hot - they weren't. Family took us to El Don last night and like others have noted, it is an eclectic decor between the semi-graffiti murals and diamond plate on the bar. There were plenty of TV's with the Braves game on. My enthusiasm grows. I see a tray of food go by and my mouth starts watering. Rosa waited on us and a couple pitchers of house margaritas were ordered. Excellent maggies served in mason jar mugs - very cool. The menu will challenge you with so many taste tempting offerings. I went with the Tampatique - skirt steak, cheese enchy, rice and beans. Perfectly delicious! The guacamole was fresh and tasty but could have used a little more cilantro for my taste. Being a chile head, I requested some fresh jalapeños and was delighted to get a small plate piled high. Overall this place earned a five star rating and then some. Can't wait to go back!

Don't overlook El Don! The decor, much better than typical mexican food, talented entertainment and friendly servers make this a great addition to north alpharetta. While the food is great, the drinks and murals (I hear they're done by an artist who works on The Walking Dead) are reason enough to try it. I hope they make it. We need a spot like this on the burbs!

.Today I was very surprised about another of my favorite dishes Surf and turf, back home we eat that with fish chips and tartar sauce, the cheese dip was a nice touch , my lady had the chicken quesadilla it was very very good a bit messy but good flavor My suggestion to the big lad in the kitchen is to probably make 3 small quesadillas instead of cutting in three a big flour tortilla drinks were delish, the service by this thin Irish looking girl was oustanding as usual and the candle light touch was amazingly perfect my lady was so happy , will be back this weekend with some friends

This restaurant provides the best Mexican food in town. It's authentic Mexican and it's tasty. I'd recommend the carnitas burrito and the empanadas. If you're used to places like La Parrilla or El Azteca, you should forget everything you thought you knew about Mexican food. El Don is awesome.

The skinny margaritas were great, as well as the steak tacos! Fun atmosphere for families, however the guac was just marginal. However we'll definitely go back.

We have eaten here 6+ times now. The food has always been delicious! !! Unlike most of the Mexican restaurants that all taste the same. On the weekends they have live performances, but they don't play so loud that you can't hear your conversations. I am partial to the fish tacos, you get a healthy helping of fish on them! The restaurant is also very clean, this is extremely important to me. Give it a try.

Most important in choosing a restaurant is the food, right? Well, the food here is excellent! Some of the best Mexican food I have had in the area. Organic margaritas are great, as were the tilapia tacos & chimichangas. The churro beans & rice were the best I have had in a long time. Service was also excellent. That said, we were a little put off by the restaurant space itself. The vastness of the interior is weird, at least when there's no music or dancing. (We went at 5:00) There is a small patio, so we opted to eat outside & were very happy there. We will definitely be back, as long as we can sit outside.

Went to El Don for dinner on a Friday night. Had live music and a nice atmosphere. Chips and two kinds of salsa were brought to the table. Prompt and courteous service. My wife had seafood enchiladas and I had Tacos Tequilas with steak. Both were very good. We will definitely be back. Hopefully something can last at this location.

Started with really good roasted tomato salsa. Chicken fajitas nachos were excellent, steak burrito was superb. Steak was one of the best flavored that I've had at a Mexican restaurant, well any restaurant really. Wish I lived closer.

We stopped in at El Don for dinner last night. There was a local coupon special that had popped up in my email and I hadn't even realized that this restaurant had opened so close to where we live. I'm always on the lookout for a good Mexican restaurant, especially one that is open later on the weekends (El Don is open until 11 on Friday and Saturday). There are times when I want a pitcher of margaritas later in the evening so I appreciate places that stay open like this. The interior of the restaurant is large and spacious. There are a few booths against two walls and a large number of tables in the open space. There are high ceilings which give a very open feeling, and the walls are decorated with some interesting murals. There is also a bar area in one corner with a decent number of seats available, the bar is more brightly lit than the rest of the dining room. The owners have obviously invested in the space as I counted 8 flat screen TV's along the upper walls. The most striking TV however is the large projection screen on the south wall of the dining room. I'm not sure the exact size but its easily in the 200 inch range, similar to what you'd find at a Taco Mac. This is not something that is typical at a Mexican restaurant and I found it very interesting. I can definitely see myself coming in for a meal and drinks while watching a football game. There was nothing on when we were in however so we opted for a more intimate booth in the corner. The tables all had candles which I thought was a nice touch. The menu is large and varied, but with all the expected items as well as a few more exotic choices. We didn't do anything fancy, opting for a shredded chicken quesadilla and a combo plate with taco, two enchilladas and rice. We also ordered a 32 oz frozen margarita to share. The meal started with fresh chips and two kinds of salsa. The chips were light and crispy, and the salsas tasted fresh as well. There was a warm chipotle salsa and then a cold red smooth salsa. I prefer my cold salsa with a bit more texture rather than all blended down into a sauce, but that aside it had a good flavor and was a nice way to start the meal. Our waitress made a point to let us know that all the food is made to order, including the fillings for the enchilladas and quesadillas. I could tell this was true because the chicken had a very good flavor and didn't suffer from being over simmered like you find at many places. The portions were quite large and we weren't able to finish all the food, we enjoyed everything that we had ordered. The margaritas were flavorful as well, with a good citrus base and a medium taste of tequila. All in all, we enjoyed our meal very much and look forward to returning. I hope El Don can find an audience, there are so many Mexican restaurants around. But they clearly have a focus on the food and providing good service to their guests. My only suggestion to the owners would be to offer the 32 oz margarita in a half pitcher, trying to pour from the large glass mug it was served in was a challenge and some got spilled on the table. 32 oz is fairly standard for half pitcher size and I think it would be a common occurrence for people to want to share a drink that large. Recommended.

Trying out a Mexican restaurant a few minutes from my new house. The restaurant is large and colorful and had a variety of TVs showing various football games (it is a Sunday afternoon). The menu is extensive and has great pictures to help you decide which entree to order. Overall, the food is great - I tried the staples: the guacamole and cheese dip and the chicken soup. I also tried the skinny margarita (for pure research purposes of course!) and it was also on point. But the most interesting part is something I didn't try. The kids area. Over in the corner, they have 5 TVs hooked up to ps4s and the projection tv displaying frozen (24/7 according to the waiter!). Pretty cool way to keep kids entertained! I will definitely be back!

Very good. Meat cooked to order. Homemade salsa. Great with the kids. Nice inside atmosphere. Big beers are good too.

Delish. Not your average cookie cutter menu. Please order the pork carnitas. I real ample portion of the most delicious meat ever. I swapped retried beans for charro beans. For that matter, you could order just the beans and be happy. Add to that the absolute coldest Corona and a super attentive staff. Tonight they have live music also. What a fantastic Friday. I ll be back.

Mexican food is my favorite, so I'm always looking for new Mexican restaurants in the area. My husband and I have driven by El Don many times, so we thought we'd give it a try. We're so glad we did. The restaurant is very roomy, with amazing artwork and murals on the wall. The menu was quite extensive. My husband had the fish tacos and I had the enchilada suprema. Delish! Two types of salsa were served - a traditional salsa and a hot roasted tomato salsa. Both were incredibly tasty. Our server was very attentive and always appeared at just the right time. Overall, a great experience! My husband and I are looking forward to our next visit. Here are my two suggestions (oddly enough, both have to do with food temperature): 1) We ordered the fresh made guacamole, which came out ice cold. I thought we were getting "table side" where the guacamole is made right in front of you and served at room temperature. 2) My entree came out luke warm. I would have preferred a little more heat (temperature wise).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
