When, at 9:15, we were rudely turned away by Cassariano's -- whose hours on Yelp say they are open until 10 -- we walked a few steps down the street and luckily happened upon this lovely establishment. With hesitance, I asked the nice young man at the door if they were still open (by now it was 9:20 and their hours indicate they close at 9:30). He said yes, and advised us the kitchen closed in 10 minutes. We were seated. We set about studying the menu with the intention of ordering quickly before the kitchen closed, but our server, Valeria, greeted us warmly, welcomed us sincerely and told us to take our time, so we settled in for what was to be a terrific meal. We started with some delicious bread, accompanied by olive oil and a high quality balsamic vinegar. They also brought us some focaccia with a delicious ricotta cheese spread. We started with a caprese salad. It was originally just for me but it was so big that my BF agreed to help me eat it. The tomatoes and basil were lovely and fresh and my cheese-connoisseur BF theorized that the cheese was fresh buffalo mozzarella. It also came with cherry tomatoes and olives, which my BF scarfed up. For our entrees, I ordered the gnocchi with basil, cherry tomatoes, and red sauce. BF ordered the special - salmon guazzetto, which was a huge piece of salmon in a white wine sauce, accompanied by clams, mussels and cherry tomatoes. It came with mashed potatoes (super fluffy and delicious) and an eggplant caponata, made with celery, onion, capers and a touch of dark chocolate. I'm not an eggplant fan so I skipped it but BF said it was earthy and tasty. For dessert, I had the special - chocolate flan. It was also delicious. The food was fantastic, from start to finish, but even more impressive was the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. Valeria was very attentive and charming as were other members of the staff. Even those who were not assigned to our table inquired about our experience and our food and seemed genuinely concerned about us. It's their attention to detail, authenticity, quality and service that will bring us back here and that made me so glad we were treated so rudely by the other restaurant. Do yourself a favor -- opt for authentic Italian cuisine and heartfelt service and try this place!

Food was good, but DON'T go with children. I was in a bit of shock when I got the bill. They charge the same for kids plates as for adults. I think $12 for a childs plate of spaghetti with butter is a TAD too much. Service was OK, not great. And there were only 2 other couples in there. I don't think I'd return. There are other Italian restaurants that aren't as pricey.

We just went there last night. 6 of us. The meals they created for us were as authentic and tasty as anything you could imagine. To start off they created an appetizer using YellowFin Tuna. It was the best!! Then we all ordered pasta- the one with sausage and porcini mushrooms called Pappardelle Boscaiola. Everyone had that and it was smooth and delicious. Then for desert- A MUST- their Profiteroles- They are absolutely crazy good!! Had Proseco bubbly Italian wine, great coffee and the owner recommend a white wine from his home region in Northern Italy. Can't go wrong. Service could not have been better as well.

Impeccable service. The staff work a lot like a team to make sure your visit is enjoyable I was checked several times. good Lunch special You get 1/2 salad 1/2 pasta (several choices) and cup of soup. And bread with ricotta The pasta is made in house. So are the soups. Everything is very fresh I had pasta with seafood and cherry tomato. Lots of seafood. Very good. Soup had lots of flavor and salted just right. The outdoor seating is covered and good for people watching. But uncomfortable seats. Better ones inside. I will definitely be back

Just came home from the most wonderful dinner at this fabolous restaurant in Venice, Florida. Everything was soooo good including the fresh complimentary Foccacia, the different appetizers, our pasta dishes and the delicious Tiramisu. Go on Tuesday's and enjoy their 50% off on all wines. So good value:-)

Italy in the heart of Venice, Fla. Staff was friendly, knowledgable and fun. Food was deliciousa!! Started with the terraina of clans and mussels in a wonderfully flavorful broth. Next the rucola salad..delicate rocket with a light lemon dressing, fennel and roasted peppers. Perfect. Pastas..all homemade, were cooked exactly as they should be. The gnocchi was melt in your mouth delectable with a perfect tomato sauce and baked with a touch of fresh mozzarella. The special, a fettuccine with a braised rib eye rage in red wine reduction disappeared from the plate. My husband was ecstatic when they put down the spoon for it. Brought him back to his childhood. The espresso had great creama, was the perfect temperature and was delivered with homemade anise biscotti that were lightly dusted with sugar. Chef Roberto truly knows his stuff. Panda cotta came with a perfect caramel glaze and had the consistency of creamy silk. Absolutely amazing. Can't wait to come back!!!!

Did a party for my wife's birthday last night and as usual the food and service was spectacular. We were a party of 19.and the service was personal and attentive. The food wonderfully prepared and hot and the desserts over the top. Don't miss this great stop in Venice.

Simply a wonderful little Italian cafe on the island serving the best food in all of Venice and surrounding area by an outstanding wait staff including the hands-on owner. This is the gem of Sarasota County for sure. And, if you were to drop it into New York City it would be a hit there as well- it's that good! Bottom line: Great food, service and value make for a must try for you foodies in the Venice area.

A wonderful little Italian restaurant. All of the five star reviews are spot on. The food was fantastic and the staff were also, Matt our waiter and Nico the owner spent time talking to us and entertaining our grandson. It is nice to see a restaurant that takes the time to make everything by hand, it reminded me of Italy. The prices were spot on for this type of good food. Will definitely come back when in Venice.

How can you visit Venice without eating at a Venitian restaurant? Actually, we didn't know this charming Italian cafe was specifically Venitian. It was a wonderful happenstance! Everything was simply perfect--the service, the food, the setting! And to top it off, they have vegan selections, even in their lunch specials. We chose the $10 soup/salad/entree lunch special. The portions looked small at first, but by the time we finished, we realized they were just right. While we dined, we enjoyed paintings of the sights of Venice, Italy, and listened to the staff chatting away in Italian--and with some of the customers, too. Seriously, it felt like we had been magically transported to Venice for this lunch! I imagine this place would be captivatingly romantic for dinner!

We had a wonderful dinner here celebrating a birthday. There were 6 of us and our table was awaiting our arrival. The service was excellent and the food was all delicious. The menu was varied and everyone found something they enjoyed. We tried the artichoke ravioli special, the house lasagne, spaghetti with bolognese sauce, and a veal entree. Portion sizes were appropriate and the salads to start were delicious with lots of fresh Italian cheeses. The lemon mousse and profiteroles were a perfect ending to our meals. We will definitely return here on future visits to Venice.

My favorite restaurant on the island. The service is impeccable, the food fresh and delicious. Can't beat the lunch special.

Not sure where the 5 star ratings are eating but this isn't even close. Tight quarters and very mediocre fare. Service was ok but when they goofed up one of our orders (it can happen anywhere) instead of responding in a courteous manner the ownership tried to debate the problem and gave us a lot of attitude. We live here year round and so does the rest of our party. Needless to say, they'll need a lot of visitors because they will not get the 12 month customer that restaurants need in this market. Quite frankly with the selection of great Italian eateries from Sarasota to Venice there is absolutely no reason to waste your money here.

The homemade ricotta is just too good. Have had 2 meals here in one week and everything I tried was excellent. Great service!

We have been here numerous times with varying results. The food is very good, but the service is hit-or-miss. A few nights ago it was a big miss. We waited for an extremely long time to order - in fact we had to flag down Nico, (not sure if he is the manager or owner) to finally do so. Our friends got their food delivered by our waiter but we were still waiting 5 minutes later and Nico brought out our orders and a duplicate of one of our friend's orders. The delay continued when we wanted to order dessert. Our waiter brought the menus, but never returned for the order. My husband asked Nico if they were short staffed, but he brusquely said they weren't. We are usually 25% or so tippers but my husband was so displeased he wanted to leave nothing. He wound up leaving a small amount. The restaurant is very crowded. If you are lucky enough to get a separate table it isn't bad, but we seem to always get one of the four person tables right next to another table. The waiters and guests have very little room to get by the first table to reach the interior one. Again, the food is good, but we probably will keep trying other places because of the crowded conditions that make us feel like we are in the way.

I'm so honored to be the first Yelp reviewer for this gem of a restaurant in downtown Venice. We visit family in the area frequently, and this is one of the best restaurants that we have enjoyed in the Venice area -- a great departure from the chains! The ambiance is very appealing -- white table cloths, but comfortable for dining in shorts, with some cafe seating outside when the weather is amenable. The perfect mix of sophistication and relaxation. Our waiter (Nico) was one of the brother owners, who have relocated to the area but are originally from Italy. The service was friendly and warm like that you would find in an Italian trattoria! The star of the show is the food! The bread and ricotta cheese as a starter was a wonderful and unexpected departure from the olive oil/butter! Our table enjoyed paninins (vegetarian and San Marco), a spinach salad, and minestrone. Everything was wonderful. However, the best dish was some al dente pasta that we were offered as a sample; the pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked -- a real treat. (Though we did not have dessert, they looked wonderful!) We will definitely return and hope this place makes a go of it on the main drag in Venice.

A very accommodating staff. Went for lunch and had tasty Italian food for a very reasonable price. Usually go when meeting friends in Venice. We have not tried it for dinner but I'm sure it would be fine

  • Lenny D.

Dinner menu was limited. Yelp rates this as a $$ but it should be a $$$. Gnocchi was homemade, but on the dry side. Quality was pretty good but price was a bit on the high side. I think there may be better value restaurants out there.

  • Laura H.

This is my favorite of the many Italian restaurants in Venice. Bummer that is doesn't have a full bar, but the one waiter always seems stoned, so maybe he can hook you up. My spaghetti with seafood was delicious. I'm not an octopus fan, but it was perfectly cooked. The homemade pasta was excellent. Very successful dish. Carpaccio was tender, tasty, and plentiful. Others enjoyed their ravioli. Special dessert and gelato were very good, as well as the coffee, but one dessert was undercooked, with a raw dough taste. Wine was good, but I'd like a cocktail before dinner and some liquor with dessert. Call me greedy, I guess.

  • Judy S.

They take reservations which is awesome because it's hard to get a table in Venice with a large party. There was seven of us. Yes, the restaurant is small. But I would take a small restaurant with excellent food and service compared to a large chain restaurant with sub-par food and service anyday. The food was amazing. Fresh, authentic Italian. I've been to Italy twice and the food was similar in both presentation and taste. The service was great, and the man who I assume is the owner stopped by our table to check up on us. Then the whole serving crew came and sang to my 78 and 79 year old grandparents for their birthday and it was adorable. I don't live here, but if I did I would be here often. I know my grandparents will be new regulars.

The $10 lunch special is what brought us off the street and into Ristorante San Marco. I had the minestrone soup and the panini DELICATO. The wait staff was fantastic. The food was authentic and fresh. The owner came out and talked to us and made sure we were happy. Lunch prices were very reasonable. But I blew my savings on peroni beer ( watch out... that's were the pricing gets you ) But it was worth it.

Great food, great service. The homemade paste is fantastic.

  • George W.

We had the lunch special-- choice of soup, a "mista" salad, and half a panini or a small serving of homemade pasta--all for $10. Lunch was beautifully presented by gracious servers & so delicious? The food seems so clean & artisanal. We loved the focaccia with fresh ricotta & the bread basket with the olive oil. Will definitely try dinner there. The food is great, but the owner, wait staff make you feel like you're so very welcome. Thank you for a great experience.

Ate there this evening for an anniversary and highly overrated - went there because of the reviews --- had the homemade sausage and spinach dish - what a disappointment - tasteless and dry, only ate 1/3 of it....saw another table returning there's as well....tiramasu tasteless as well........waiters pushy trying to take plates too fast....guess this is what Florida says is a good restaurant....3 people $190 - too expensive and no satisfaction - spoken from a foodie.....

Given the previous very positive reviews we came to San Marco for dinner with very high expectations and we were not disappointed. Since it was a lovely evening in Venice we enjoyed the outside seating and did not get to experience the ambiance of the restaurant. The service was super quick, polite and very helpful. We had veal, fish and steak entrees and all five people in our group pronounced them to be excellent. The veal scallopini in mushroom sauce and their steak were especially outstanding. This is definitely a place we will come back to and recommend to others.

Great find! We happen upon this place while on a Memorial Day adventure. I had the Tagliatelle Al Sugo Di Carne that was beyond delicious. The meat sauce must have been marinating for days based on the range of flavors I tasted in each bite. Incredible. This all on top of wonderful, home made pasta.

  • Jim D.

We had a wonderful lunch there on Saturday. We both had the combo lunch - a bargain at $10 - choice of soup and the Mista salad with your choice of pasta or panini. My wife had the minestrone soup and I had the soup of the day - a soup with spinach and mushroom. Also, my wife had Farro spaghetti and I had the Vegetariano panini. The bread brought to the table was ciabatta. All of the food was superb, the wait staff were excellent and we enjoyed speaking with one of the owners. She and her husband moved to the U.S. three years ago and they opened this restaurant about nine months ago. They have huge paintings of Venice, Italy painted by a local Florida artist.

After seeing the rave reviews on Yelp for the San Marco, I decided to try it with some friends one evening. We tried a pasta with meat sauce and the gnocchi. Being raised in an Italian community, I'm quite familiar with Italian food. Portions were okay but not large. The service was friendly and prompt and it was a nice little restaurant inside. I would describe the meals as adequate. Neither myself or my party were overly impressed with the meals. Would I return? Probably not.

All five of us loved our meals. Great flavor, ambiance, and service. The Lasagna was voted the favorite. Cater well to kids too. Anxiously waiting to come back and try other menu items.

Traditional Italian food prepared with fresh ingredients. Need I say more? Both the food and service were beyond compare.

  • Griff O.

Delightful Italian atmosphere that reminded us of our trip to Tuscany. The ambience was enjoyable and the service attentive. The food was reasonably good but did not particularly impress us in any way. I had the tagliotore and my wife had the papperdelle bosciaola and we both felt they were rather bland. The zucchini soup was enjoyable but the minestrone was uninteresting. The wine was good.

  • Greg G.

Fantastic addition to downtown Venice. The food was delicious and fresh. The grouper special in a bisque sauce was lovely and the branzino was wonderful. The ribeye was perfectly done. The portions could be a bit more generous for the price but overall our dinner was very enjoyable.

My wife and I drove down from Tampa to visit some family and they made reservations here. This restaurant has now become one of my favorites. It has a small and comfortable dining area and apparently the locals are loving it too because it was packed, but not in a bad way. The wait staff is incredibly helpful and informative in regards to the chefs, the food, the history, etc. The food is amazing! Very fresh, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The dishes are authentic and really shine. If you are in the Venice area, you will not regret having dinner here. It was totally worth out drive from Tampa and I will be more than willing to do it again. Bravo!

I can't say anything that truly expresses the beauty of the hand made pasta. It's truly spectacular and you can tell each dish is crafted with care. Leave the kids at home and enjoy a little romance, you deserve it

Great Italian food at reasonable prices. Food is made fresh on the premises. The lunch combo of 1/2 sandwich, soup and salad is great. There are a few different sandwiches and soups to choose from. We have eaten lunch here on two separate occasions and look forward to having dinner here soon. Indoor and outdoor seating fills up quickly on weekends for lunch.

We'd seen the outdoor tables in the past, and I'd wanted to try it, but my husband is not a fan of Italian restaurants ("I can get that at home") so finally we tried it today for lunch. I am in love! The ambiance was delightful; the food was fantastic--I had the carpaccio and then the ice cream drowned in coffee for dessert. My husband had the seafood pasta. The food was great; the suggestions were impeccable; our dining neighbors were friendly. I felt like a regular on this our first visit, and I promise I will become a bona fide regular for sure!

  • Jeanna L.

Wow, we were really impressed. Sometimes when you see great reviews in yelp a place doesn't live up to the expectations but this one did. The house red wine is delicious. The gnocchi was so good, fresh, small & delicate - not mushy. The crab ravioli special was awesome. We were here during off season and all the restaurants were pretty empty. I'm so glad we tried this one!!!

  • Joe T.

Very good Italian food with a northern Italian flavor. Service was great and the wait staff was very attentive. There are a lot of Italian restaurants in and around Venice and this is one of the better ones. Only negative is that the venue is quite small and the tables are very close to each other.

    (4)
  • Kate S.

The best italian food I have ever had outside of Italy. It's always been packed when I've been here so I recommend making a reservation. Will be the best meal you have in venice.

Sure glad we had reservations! Food was excellent and the atmosphere is very inviting. We discovered that this restaurant had only been in business for approx. 3 months, yet it felt like it had always been on this site. Definitely will return.

It's hard to give a place 5 stars but this little italian gem really deserves it. I have been here twice and have had a wonderful dinner experience both times. The waiters are so charming, professional, funny and it feels very warm and attentive. It had always been super packed when we have eaten, meaning other people like it a lot too! They usually have some interesting specials but honestly the menu can't beat. it accommodates vegans to meat eaters. the entree i LOVE is the vegan spaghetti...i've never eaten anything vegan thats so buttery, light, complex and totally non vegan tasting! the pasta with seafood in it is also a winner, with 2 large prawns and really chewy but soft noodles. The only complaint I have foodwise is the minestrone soup is bland and over oily with large chunks of (mainly) potatos, and carrot and zucchini. They usually have a good house wine as well that is very affordable. tonight it was a nero d'avola from sicily for $20. The owners/head chef are legit italians, don't know why they moved to florida but they did and its great! If you look at their reviews on trip advisor they have a bunch of stellar reviews in italian, from italians...that's always a promising sign if you're an italian restaurant. This place is only going to get more popular once people hear about it.

  • Debbie L.

Disappointed. Spinach salad and dressing bland. Salmon suppose to be 8 oz but unless that was prior to cooking, not 8 oz. pasta sauce heavy, veg on pasta diced. Prices were ok. Women server very nice, male server out to lunch

I was pleasantly surprised by this little Italian restaurant. It is definitely the best place in Venice, FL I have eaten at. The owner and staff are attentive. The menu is simple and delicious. The ingredients fresh and the preparation excellent. I took my 91 year old Italian grandfather here and he thought it was excellent. It's a little of the pricey side, but worth it. The restaurant is small and welcoming, and the ambiance is wonderful. I had the seafood risotto and it was delicious, the rice perfectly prepared with fresh clams, scallops, mussels, shrimp and calamari incorporated. My grandfather had the veal scaloppini and was very pleased.

Warm, authentic, genuinely, friendly service with delicious homemade italian food. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients in every dish. $10 lunch special and $20 house red are incredible values. Rare gem and a welcome addition to the Venice area. Service is professional and very well trained. Will make this a regular stop when in the area

We had a delightful "breakaway" Venice restaurant experience here last night that involved excellent food, excellent service, an increasingly pleasant ambiance as dinner went on, and some special treats. I call it "breakaway" because after visiting Venice for some 30 years to see my parents, they are now quite elderly, and we are able to explore different culinary experiences than those involving chain restaurants, deep fryers, microwave ovens, and salad bards. The pasta--and nearly everything else is fresh and made in-house. We both settled on a crisp and flavorful Caesar salad and a pasta dish--she a spinach ravioli and I that day's featured pasta, which was a linguine with a sauce involving a little grouper, asparagus and so on. Both were delicious, and though quite satisfied, we couldn't resist a dessert which we enjoyed too much. I had a nice house wine with my pasta and an espresso with dessert. Both were fine. The service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing, and we were given a nice extra treat as a finale. Our only initial complaint was that the restaurant was too brightly lit, but about 2/3rds through our meal, a couple near us voiced the same concern--very politely to the server, and a moment later the lights dimmed to a pleasant glow that was still bright enough for most of the seniors in Venice--as well as those of us rapidly gaining on them in terms of age and visual acuity--to read their menus. Moreover, with lights a bit lower, we realized the the room was appointed very pleasantly, with what could have been original renderings of the ancient Italian inspiration for my parents' retirement destination in Florida. God bless my parents. I hope that they are happy with their early bedtime for many more years before mine matches theirs and makes fine dining experiences like the one we enjoyed here less likely.

My wife and I ate there last night and it was perfect. Great food, good wine and a very friendly wait staff. Felt like we were back in Italy. Prices were very fair for what you got. Can't wait to go back! You have to try this new gem.

Would give 6 stars if I could! My husband and I ate here while on vacation. We weren't sure what to expect since there are so many Italian restaurants in the area, but this was by far a delicious treat! Nico took care of us, made some excellent recommendations and did an awesome job of teaching us a little about the bottle of wine we selected for dinner. Hands down the best prepared ribeye I've ever had!

Our party of four were greeted warmly by the friendly owner and staff. The owner went out of his way to accommodate our senior with his walker and to seat him away from the door where he requested. The wait staff was enthusiastic and on top of all our requests. One of our party could not eat tomatoes and was directed to the dishes that had none. Our patriarch requested linguini with pesto even though it was not on the menu and ate it with great gusto. The focaccia was excellent served with a pesto side. The eggplant parmigiana app was velvety and delicious. The salad Rucola was a smudge bland with its lemon dressing, but balsamic on the table added a touch more bite. The Ravioli with sage butter sauce was demolished by our matriarch, who also stole a few bites of the linguini with pesto. The gnocchi with fresh tomato sauce was delightful potato pillows. The paparadelle with sausage and mushrooms was also greatly enjoyed. Everything was made to order and the pasta was all made in house so it was a very leisurely meal.

While enjoying a day out in Venice with momma, we walked Venice Avenue and stopped here for lunch before headed back south. The server was nice, attentive and very informative. The atmosphere was very genuine and rustic. It reminded me of a restaurant I might visit in Little Italy in NYC. The food was amazing. Momma had the muscles in a wine sauce and I had the mozzarella basil panini with prosciutto. The food was made to perfection and the owners both came to the table to check on us. The prices were very reasonable. They have daily lunch specials from 11 to 3 pm. I definitely deem the restaurant a must visit when I have northern folks come to visit, as I am know for sure that they will approve. They also have an expansive wine list for those looking for some additional Italian flavor a with their meal.

We had the nicest lunch! Sat outside, relaxed, comfortable, un-rushed atmosphere. Nico provided flawless, friendly service. I had the lunch combo-salad, soup and pasta. It sounds like a lot, but it was perfection, and for $12, a spectacular value. Minestrone, fresh greens and an amazing tagliatelle with Sunday meat sauce. My partner had the meat tray with the arugula salad-he loved it. We finished off with cappuccinos paired with delicate sweet little cookies. I can't wait to come back!!!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
