A little expensive for fried food! Good view of the river and a friendly bar.

I was told to be gentle when I reviewed this place... I'll be as gentle as I can be. I was not a fan. The atmosphere is pretty rustic which, in and of itself, is not a fault. I feel like the restaurant belongs in northern Michigan and not chillin' along a river in FL. The menus also serve as your placemat and the silverware comes in a waxy wrapping. The rest of your necessary accouterments are on the table. All of the plates and bowls (err.. almost all of the bowls) were made out of a light plastic. Once again, not a slam, just an observation. I was told that the clam chowder was amazing, and it was decent. Really, I'd give it 3-4 stars. I think Leverocks is probably better, but this wasn't bad. For dinner I decided to go for the grilled fish, which was some light fish I'd never heard of. Trying to make wise decisions, I chose the mixed vegetables and rice for my sides. The fish was fine. Not amazing, not bad... just fine. The sides were where they totally lost me. The vegetables definitely came straight out of a bag of frozen vegetables and the rice was completely bla and came in a styrofoam bowl (note, the bowl wasn't plastic). Just lack luster and subpar. The hushpuppies weren't bad, but I don't have a standard hushpuppy expectation of which to compare them. To accompany my meal I had a glass of red wine, which also seemed old. On the brighter side, our waiter was a pleasant guy. He was efficient and friendly. Full disclosure, I have no issue with all of the strange restaurant-y stuff I mentioned at the beginning of this review. However, I DO think that if you want to have a rustic establishment and cut some corners with presentation, etc. you should then make sure your food is outstanding. This food was not outstanding and the presentation left a lot to be desired.

This is probably in my top 3 all-time favorite places to eat. My grandparents take me here whenever I visit them. The horseradish crusted fish fillet or blackened grouper are my favorite 2 items. The clam chowder is excellent! Great view of the water-every now and then you'll see an alligator swim by. It's very remote and don't expect fine china since they use styrofoam plates and plastic silverware! I love it though!

This place is a joke. Sure, it's got a nice view of the river, but that's the extent. Super expensive for what you get. Portions are microscopic. Just about everything is fried items. Don't be deceived, there is nothing great about this food that was probably purchased in bulk at the local Sam's club. ALL the seafood was the wrong color, and some with freezer burn. There is nothing 'fresh' here. it's all standard freezer to the frier fare. Beer was warm. Bartender is basically clueless on how to make a virgin drink for my wife. I asked for a virgin strawberry daiquiri.... got daiquiri mix on the rocks.

What a surprise based on the reviews. Four of us had some really good meals. I had oysters on the half shell. Not much to say. How can you go wrong. One friend had oysters Rockefeller and he and his wife said they were as good as any they have ever had. I had the walleye special since I haven't had walleye for 20 years. It was excellent, a nice crispy coating and moist delicious fish! My wife had the coconut shrimp and enjoyed it. One friend had the horseradish crusted fish which he thoroughly enjoyed. The other had cod fingers which she said was done perfectly. I'd go back in a minute if it wasn't a 50 minute drive.

I heard some good things about this place from my parents so I decided to give it a try. Meh. Not a fan. The staff was friendly and it seemed pretty clean but I have to say.. the food is nothing to write home about... and food is the reason I go out to eat instead of cooking at home. I had a fried fish sandwich and thought the breading was way too thick and overcooked. The fries were average. My overall opinion. "Meh."

This place always looks packed every time I drove by. So I thought wow it has to be good! Yeah NO! I had company in town and they love seafood and I don't. So I got the black and blue burger. It was a burger with blue cheese dressing on it. Lame. And the fries were chewy and crap. Someone got the scallops and shrimp they said it was okay. Nothing to really talk about. So it might look good from the outside. But don't go!!

Been in Port Charlotte since Saturday and we just went here last night (Tuesday). I wish we would have gone sooner because we leave today and I'm already craving the garlic grouper again. This place is fantastic. Went with 8 friends and everyone left happy. Service was great.

fun place, good for kids. fish is fresh and clams were delicious!

Had a great time here. The server was super nice. My blackened grouper and seafood gumbo was delicious. The key lime pie was one of the best I've had in years. Note, they need to change the inferior Chardonnay choice as it didn't match the quality of the food. Tasted like cheap wine in a box.

Loved this place, we had an excellent time, we are visiting from Washington State and we get our share of fish and it was wonderful getting local fresh fish, service was excellent, i work in customer service and it was a wonderful feeling being served well, even with a place that was as packed as it was. People down here must be too used to much good service, up north good service is very hard to find. Two thumbs up!!

Right on the Myakka River with a great view is this "old Florida" interior styled restaurant. Food was mediocre. Waitress was too loud and non-attentive. Very humid and hot inside. Hard wooden benches for seating which was very uncomfortable. The real shocker was their overpriced menu of items. This was no Ritz Carlton restaurants by a long shot and the prices cannot be justified.

This a good stop after a spring training game. The beer was cold. The atmosphere is old Florida with a nice view of the river. If you are a real seafood connoisseur you will find the seafood less than fresh. We thought it was frozen. The staff was great and the price was fair.

Casual restaurant and friendly service. Sean was our server and he was great. The horseradish encrusted baked filet was delicious. Too cool to sit outside but nice full glass view of the river inside. Very popular and busy on a Tuesday night. Call ahead. We will definitely come back.

I was very pleased with my experience here! The staff was very friendly and provided excellent service. The drinks the bartender made me were delicious and the view of the river was beautiful!

Seems popular with locals. I had the clam chowder. It was pretty tasty. The resturant is located on the river and once in awhile you can see an aligator float by. I would have to say it was like a fast food seafood type of place. I would go again.

Snowbird trap. Frozen horrible seafood if you could call it that.

Casual place, right on the river, with lots of options & fast, friendly service. My husband had the grilled grouper sandwich, I had the grilled grouper fillet. Both were fresh and perfectly cooked, but lacking flavor. My hushpuppies were dreamy, though, and the cole slaw & mashed potatoes were all very good. It bothers me, though, that a local seafood restaurant serves mainly frozen North Atlantic seafood. And at too-high prices, to boot. I can go to Red Lobster and get that cheaper, you know?
(3)Sue S.
Have been going here for years, and it never fails to please. The gumbo and blackened grouper are my favorites. Portions are good, don't be put off by the "rustic" appearance, and you can't beat the view.

A great place. It has to be my first stop when getting back to north port and last stop before going back north. Great gumbo, all the specials are great and prices are very good

We have eaten there a number of times and I usually get the fish Vera Cruz which is pretty good. My wife gets the fish Francais which she likes but looks to me like it was water boarded in sauce. Most of the patrons there seem to go for the deep fried offerings, and if your arteries can take it they look pretty toothsome. Picnic table seating not conducive to relaxing dining.

Had dinner here. Casual, white pine decor but good food and very friendly, efficient service. Our party had Horseradish Encrusted Fillet, fried scallops and 2 had the Greek Grouper Casserole. The fillet got two thumbs up from my husband, the scallops were lightly breaded and not heavy or greasy. Would definitely recommend the Grouper casserole. It was very flavorful. Good value for price.

Although most of the specials are not local fish, they are prepared properly, delicious and reasonably priced. I am a great fan of this restaurants low season (summer) all you can eat specials and early bird drink specials.

Local yummy food. Not fancy but delicious. Our table of four had baby back ribs which were tender, baked horseradish crusted grouper...yum!, chicken strips for picky eater and he ate it all and a crab cake dinner which included two patties. All dinners came with a choice of two sides. Nothing was greasy and everything was cooked to perfection. Waiter, Brandon, did a incredible service. We also caught 50 cent beer specials which happened on a Wednesday. They do have daily specials like the crab cake dinner for $8.99. Our total bill plus 20 % tip was $70. (We drank water and 4 beers at 50 cents each) Will definitely come back when I'm in the area

The only good thing about this place is the raw oysters but be ready to pay $17 for a dozen. Service was awful, plates and glasses sat empty, food took forever to come. Food was plain, tons of batter on all fried items, and came out cold. Also no paper towels in the bathroom...eww!
(1)Tyler S.
Great service, good deals on early bird and great lunch specials in the weekends. Love the fish tacos. Great views of the Myakka river it's the only place like it in south Venice. Can get really busy in season but the wait is worth it. Great job a+

The seafood here is always cooked perfectly. Not too well done like so many places do. They have a number of creative ways to have your food prepared which are all good. This is good basic seafood well prepared. For me, the bottom line is their oysters. In all the many dozens of raw oysters I have eaten here, I had never gotten one that wasn't plump and juicy with a good taste. This is about the only place I get oysters on the half shell anymore because I got tired of it being a hit and miss deal at even some of the better places. Not so at Myakka. Always fresh, juicy, clean and tasty. Service is always good.

Try and ignore some of the reviews below; they don't know what they're talking about. If you're looking for something gourmet and healthy, don't come here. But if you want some fried seafood then this is the place to be. I had the Coconut Shrimp Dinner which was excellent. From what I can most of the other seafood is just as good. Complaints: Fried clam was what you'd expect from a subpar place - mostly breading with very little flavor. I've had better hushpuppies, but they weren't bad. Portions were more so on the small side, but nothing really to complain about. Overall, I will definitely be coming back when in the mood for fried seafood.
