A work project brought me to the area. While on a break, my colleagues and I stopped in. We didn't know the place. It just happened to be nearby. This was the best coffee I have ever had. The experience was like having a meal in a great restaurant, where you eat something you've had before but it tastes better than you ever could have imagined. While my colleagues and I were admiring one of the roasting machines (there's a picture of it as part of this Yelp profile) in the back, Gary - the owner - came over and gave us a quick lesson on coffee beans. We talked a bit more and asked a few questions, and we learned that Gary's traveled around the world several times for his work as a coffee buyer. His knowledge, experience, and passion is clear, and it's all clearly evident in his product. Outstanding stuff.

Excellent coffee and sandwiches. Beats Starbucks hands down. Close to I-75. Or new go to coffee stop when driving between Ft Myers and Tampa
(5)Mike M.
Worth getting off 1-75 to stop in here: The coffee is genius. Because of another review we almost missed the food. As it turns out, owner made a point to say hello to us, and we wound up talking. Gratefully! The breads and sandwiches were simple and brilliant--believe it or not, a tuna melt very much astounded us. It was perfectly seasoned, served on baked-on-premise hand-rolled bread, with homemade salsa on side with crispy chip. Perfect! In three days up from Key West, this was my and my companion Leonie's favorite meal. Even the other guests were (somehow) complimentary to this experience. Complainers, move on. Black Gold Coffee Roasters is frankly magical.

What a great find near my folks place in Venice! Located in the Publix shopping center at the new round about on Jacaranda I popped in needing an iced coffee and found what has become my mainstay during this trip to Venice. Since usually I'm on the beach or diving it could have taken me way longer to meet up with Gary and find what is surly the most awesome custom roasting steam engine. Being a more trying trip with a family issue Black Gold has been a life saver. They have many more tasty good options than other so called coffee companies and by far some of the best coffee I've ever had! I'll definitely be bringing it back to Atlanta with me! Certainly glad Gary and his wife decided on Venice when escaping L.A.!
(5)Ira F.
A little out of the way coffee shop tucked to the side of a strip mall with Publix as the anchor. I have passed this place a dozen times, but had not really noticed it. THis morning I had popped into Publix on my way into work and as I was leaving spied it with a hankerin for a good dark roast cup of joe. Walked in, not very busy, clean and pleasant and friendly service. Got my coffee and headed out the door. Was very pleasantly surprised. GREAT cup of coffee. Priced at $2.75 for a medium cup is about the same as most of the coffee shop prices. Well worth stopping in if you're in the area of Venice and Jacaranda.
(4)James D.
Excellent location, and atmosphere. Very clean and very friendly staff. Owner is always walking around making sure all is well. The coffee is one of the best I've tried, and always FRESH. They have many varieties of coffee for you to try daily. My favorite is the Salvadorean flavor. Muffins, no exaggeration, best blueberry muffin I've tried. Get one each Monday and Friday morning, so as not to get fat :-) THE BEST coffee shop in the Sarasota area.
(5)Christopher B.
Black Gold Coffee is the Grade A of coffee shops. I absolutely love their espresso chocolate ball deserts. Delicious!! 5 Stars All The Way. DO NOT FORGET TO TRY THE "ESPRESSO BALLS"!
(5)John L.
Gary and his team are awesome and everyone needs to start there day with a little Black Gold
(5)Reggie L.
The hype is real. Great coffee, food and staff. Wish I found this place at the start of my vacation instead of the end.
(5)Dave B.
Phenomenal and a must stop, if you like true artisan coffee. This is your place. If you can't get here, order online. Organic single origin coffee specialists. If you stop in, make sure to have a bagel. Try the lox on and everything bagel.
(5)Brian W.
Great coffee. Quality food. Highly recommended. This is the place to come in Venice versus the Starbucks which is located in the Target. Much better alternative.
(5)Doug L.
Best coffee I have ever had, period!

Early saturday morning roadtrip, FL back to NH. Hmmm should we veer a few minutes off the freeway to find a local coffee joint or just go to the nearest crap-coffee-but-definitely-open place... you know... the 'Bucks? In retrospect we were embarrassed that we even asked ourselves this question. This place is UNREAL to the point where we couldnt believe we were still in FL. Living in SF for the past 10 years, we have involuntarily turned into coffee snobs and foodies. This unsuspecting strip mall coffee roaster would compete with any place in CA. We ordered lattes which we served rich and foamy. Against our own good judgment, we splurged $8 for the lox bagels. Totally worth it. The friendly young owner (originally from MKE by way of LAX) informed me that the bagels were from the Bronx, and that he sampled 23 types of salmon to find the right flavor for the lox. We left stoked that we found a diamond in the rough while supporting a promising new local business.

I am totally in love with this Americano. -And I am a coffee huntress when it comes to finding THE americanos!!! I drive up from Englewood every morning on my way to Venice and one day I decided to stop and check it out. There is a nice rich smoothness to the drink, none of this usual acidic afterburn I can taste in many other places. You can just tell when someone cares about what they do. I watch these people make my drink each day -and I love to see the precise crisp movements with which they tamp down the ground beans LOL. (nerdy of me? ya!) I have intentionally adjusted my morning routine so that I can have time to stop in each day LOL. The employees are friendly and the owner is hands on part of the scene. You can really tell he loves what he has built and I wish him all the best. Please stop in and check this place out. The bagels rock too! The bean roaster in the building is really cool too.
(5)Tricia K.
GREAT Coffee! Good little coffee shop! Location leaves a lot to be desired.
(4)Scotty B.
Best coffee in Fla. Gary and his wife are awesome everything is top notch. try the lox and bagels or thai salad in a large clean space. I would drive a hour just to have a great latte. Cmon!
(5)Mann H.
Wow, a real coffee house with superb coffee in Venice,FL. Who would've guessed it could happen here? And they play great music - which is very uncommon. Friendly staff too. A true coffee oasis.
(5)Liv C.
Uh yum. I don't generally love coffee, but I drank some of my mom's honey latte and it was really good. It wasn't bitter, but it wasn't too sweet either. She would not stop saying how insanely good it was. Good stuff.
(5)Rich K.
This coffee shop is everything it is billed to be. A real diamond in the rough. I was surprised to find coffee like this in the Venice area. If you like strong, bold and organic coffee, roasted with love and passion, then this place is for you. Whenever, we are in the Venice area, we will make sure we stop here. Kudos to the owner for providing a world class coffee and hiring employees who are enthusiastic about his product.
(5)Michelle K.
Great quality coffee - fresh roasted and brewed well. The espresso is excellent as well. Almost a sweet character to it. Tried an apple cinnamon scone - not usually my fav flavor but knew my husband would like it. Was happy I gave it a try! Chewy ( in a good way) and wonderful flavor. The people are friendly too.
(5)Breahna G.
Great coffee and very helpful employees! I love trying new coffee shops and I was not disappointed. They have a good variety of coffees and drinks with some lunch choices if you're hungry. I just ordered a drink, but the food looked amazing. I'll definitely visit when I'm in Venice again.
(5)Chris L.
Interesting coffee shop tucked away in a newer strip mall in Venice, FL. Near the rotary at Venice Ave and Jacaranda Road. Great ambiance and music. They roast their own beans on site, usually every one to two weeks according to the owner, Gary. Excellent latte art. Full-bodied expresso with strong flavor, definitely a dark roast but not burnt like a large well-know chain. While this is not the best espresso I've ever had, it is unique, strong and flavorful. I rate this coffee shop five stars because the owners have achieved something unique in the Florida coffee landscape clearly through a lot of hard work. The espresso quality is four-star. Five-star espresso has to blow me away, and this is not quite there....but close. Gary's espresso roast is strong and dark and packs a punch. I happen to like it as a change of pace, but it's missing some subtlety that I enjoy in fine coffee. Yes I am very picky about my coffee! Everything else is 5-star (ambience, service, etc) and nudged the overall review to 5 stars. I will definitely be back for more. They have an interesting food menu that I'm dying to try out, and some other coffee drinks I want to sample. I suspect that if you're lucky enough to hit this shop on roasting day that the coffee would be unbelievably good. Update 9/23/11-- I had another day in Venice and came back here to try the food. The Bagel & Lox is outstanding! Excellent food and service here. I strongly recommend Black Gold as an alternative to chain coffee places, for the same price you can get food and coffee that's dramatically better and more interesting. And support a great local business!
(5)Jesse N.
Excellent espresso and chill atmosphere.
(5)Tim B.
We're here visiting family and, after a week of dreadful drip coffee around the Venice area, finding this place was more valuable than finding actual gold! Very friendly staff and well prepared latte from tasty beans in a nice atmosphere with great music. Thank you! Thank you for rescuing us from another day of that horrible liquid that other places call coffee!
(5)Kim W.
You've got to go! Coffee and specialty drinks were top-notch. The friendly, knowledgeable staff made our visit a pleasure. Thanks to Gary, the owner, for taking the time to chat coffee with us for a bit!
(5)Elizabeth B.
This place isn't just good for Venice, Florida, it's a coffee shop worthy of a visit from any jaded traveler! The second you pull into the parking lot, you can smell the coffee roasting on premise. I'll be back on my next visit to Florida!
(5)Sue M.
Love, love, love Black Gold Roasters! Amazing coffee, delicious food-favorite AM. Food is the Yogurt Parfait, Truffles are a sinfully delicious treat. Service is friendly and professional, owner is very knowledgeable and welcoming. What are you waiting for? Check them out now, you will become a repeat customer for sure.
(5)Paul R.
Great coffee and a great atmosphere. I will return anytime visiting I visit the area
(5)David P.
The atmosphere should expect from a cool new coffee shop along with Wi-Fi. What you don't expect is the warm careful service the minute you come through the door. Coffee is their business here, and they do deliver. The coffee of the day was well roasted. Look forward to the chance to catch the aroma from the on-site roaster. The food is what lacks here. The menu has sufficient variety except in the sweet pastry category where you will be undazzled by the meager offerings of the glass case. The sandwiches are unnecessarily dry and certainly not overstuffed.
(4)Jeremy M.
Hey, pretty good. Boy am I glad I found this place on Yelp, or I would have faced another of my annual Venice coffeeshop visits at that national chain. Black Gold is quite a bit better than that other place. I had the holiday roast coffee and an espresso, as well as a muffin and an egg & cheese croissant. (I was hungry, okay?!) My mother had a coffee and bagel with egg/cheese. Coffee was really very good and reasonably priced. Espresso was decent. The muffin was good and so was the croissant (and my mother's bagel), but it would have been nice if the egg wasn't made in the microwave. Service was awesome and the baristi [Aren't I pretentious?] were friendly and knowledgeable. And it's nice that they roast the beans there...
(4)Mik J.
Brilliant coffee. They need help with the baked goods but the coffee is wonderful. I even bought some to take home. Avoid Starbuck coffee lovers. Black Gold is what you need!
(5)Marat O.
An LA, CA transplant. This guy roasts his own ORGANIC beans. The coffee is spectacular and the baked scones are fantastic. I loved getting a pound of espresso beans here for personal use to. If you have time, skip the chain coffee shops and try Black Gold. It's a great pick-me-up any time of the day.
(5)Oh-two-fl L.
Try this place just one time and I guarantee that you'll give up that 'other' coffee chain. We've tried about every drink on his menu and there wasn't one that didn't hit the mark and often then some. Pumpkin latte if I'm feeling the FL chill and a little fancy. Otherwise, I'm pretty much just an espresso/coffee person. I like to taste my coffee and not have the milk overpower and they do it perfectly here. It's a fun place to sit or grab and go. Lucky to live nearby so can enjoy both. OH... And best of all, unlike the 'other' place, the cup actually has more drink than foam. You get what you pay for at BG!
(5)Peggy f.
My husband and I visit Gary and Chareeya at Black Gold every morning and every afternoon for coffee. Now, we used to go to Dunkin' Donuts for coffee until Gary opened Black Gold. Now we are converts! Besides serving an outstanding product and being such nice people, we just really, really like seeing the place thrive and seeing what they have achieved in such a short time. Especially with the obstacles they have endured ( the traffic circle ) Once you go there, you will go back! They run a clean, cute, fun coffee shop and it blows away Starbucks, believe me! Larry & Peggy
(5)Frank Q.
We love this place! We were in Venice for a weekend getaway and before leaving we decided to stop by and have breakfast. It was delicious. We both had croissant sandwiches and each ordered iced coffees. You can taste the real ingredients in the food. Had the pleasure of talking with Gary, the owner, and he an outstanding guy. It's awesome when you get a chance to have a great conversation with the owner. Can't do that at Starbucks. We'll definitely come back to Black Gold Coffee Roasters when we return to Venice.
(5)Billy H.
The beans are roasted on site using a very robust and beautiful Santa Fe roaster. The owner/roaster usually gets his hands on an array of high-end beans that you won't be able to find at many other places (if any). They might be "a bit dark in color" for my personal liking, but I have never bought a bad tasting bean here to date... Hence the name, "Black Gold", I guess. The bean bags here come in transparent bags and are "true pounds", (16 ozs, not the usual 12 oz. bags) that many other places sell at the same price, so thumbs up here too... Let the candy bars get smaller from decade to decade, but please, leave the coffee beans alone! "Coffee shop food" is getting better and better all across the country, no exceptions here! My only complaints are it's small size (especially outside), and the limited hours. The Cure... Take over the nearby Publix supermarket and make the open hours from 4am to 2am... That should allow just enough time to do the floors.
(5)Tracy W.
Gary, Good for you that you have a location enabling your business to succeed. Clearly you need not worry about honest, less than flattering, feedback from the likes of myself. From your response to the review I can see that you have what it takes to survive in the current day coffee roaster market here in Venice. Good luck to you. no longer disappointed but now disengaged.... Tracy
(2)Darryl B.
Black Gold Coffee Roasters is that special place that you will enjoy to start your day off right! The coffee is hot and delicious and is only surpassed by the staffs attentiveness. By the way there are a number of wonderful cold drinks! Try my favorite cold coffee drink, the 'BD'. There are plenty of wonderful selections for breakfast or lunch. Try the lox on an oseago bagel...delicious!
(5)Ward W.
Gary's BLT was done to perfection as described in the menu. The bacon was delicious and the tomatoes were juicy served on toasted Ciabatta, YUM! Topped lunch with iced coffee skillfully roasted on sight. I'll be a regular.
(4)Michelle L.
My partner and I visited for lunch and I had the turkey and gruyere panini along with a honey bee latte. The latte was a little sweet, but I believe that's personal preference and definitely not a fault of the barista. We also purchased the pearl jasmine tea (delicious!) and a soup/salad combo with butternut squash soup. I heard praises from the other side of the table during the whole meal. I was most impressed with the friendliness of the staff... We had multiple people check on us to ensure we were enjoying our meal and drinks. The atmosphere, the fare, and the free wifi are all positive points. I'll be back!
(5)Dan I.
Love this place, best coffee and friendly staff, do yourself a favor, get your coffee here!
(5)Annie F.
I am from Germany and have spent the past few years in Berlin, a big city with amazing coffee places and breakfast venues. Coming to Florida I expected the usual chains and gas station coffee and was surprised to hear about black gold. I fell in love immediately. The coffee is delicious, their food tasty, the staff is always friendly and helpful. It does get crowded in there, but i don't see how that can be reason for a bad experience. To me it shows people are loyal to black gold because they appreciate the service and product. Another nice feature is that the coffee roasters are in the same place, so it smells great. Oh, and the owner is a knowledgable and friendly guy. All in all, I wish I could take this place with me wherever I go.
(5)Kim D.
I was meeting people at Black Gold for an interview/ business meeting and I ordered a cup of coffee while I was waiting. I was paying with my debit card and he said there was a 5 dollar minimum and asked me if I had any cash which I did not. I asked for the guest password for wifi and he said no that is for my customers. I said I am a customer, he said no your not .and I said well after this meeting I will probably not be back and he said you can leave now. I said I haven't done anything wrong and I told him I was waiting on my party, I wasn't leaving so he said we will see about that and he called the police so I left crying. I have never been so insulted and been so rude by a owner/ mgr in my 57 years of life. I was waiting on my party to get there and they probably would have ordered for me and I was a customer and he treated me like some criminal. I had the money on my card but he would not except it, Starbucks always takes pmt with a debit card and I have read other reviews where he asks people to leave. Then on my review on Facebook he messaged me and told me that I wasnt having a meeting it was more like a interview for a nanny position and that I would not be getting the job, that the people were good customers of his. He is so unprofessional and told a bunch of lies to the people I was interviewing with which was none of his business. He was the one who was rude to a good potential customer. I would not recommend this place. I work with the public and the customer is always right and they come first.Wow and he just posted some more lies on Yelp. I never once was barking at his employees or him. I did not refuse to pay for my coffee, he just refused to accept my debit card 5 dollar minimum. Then after he was rude and would not give me the password while I was waiting on his good customers who were interviewing me, yes I was upset and after I left I sat out front to call the people who I was meeting there and told them what happened but it wasn't 15 minutes. This guy is whacko and is harrasing me because I am giving review on how rude he was.Be sure to click on comments and read what else he said to me. If he would post the video like he threatened me with everyone could see and hear his rudeness but that is against the law to post video of someone without their permission.

Something for everyone. Coffee, of course, is the best, but NY bagels, pastries, and gluten free also are wonderful. If you are in Venice, you can't miss this for breakfast, lunch, snack.,or just fantastic coffee.
(5)B M.
My last review was deleted. If you read on, you will find others that were harassed after leaving a not so positive review. I have had Gary's coffee and it is average. A large cup is almost $4 and if you add something to eat you are easily at $10+. This place is touted as magnificent due to it's demographic and physical location. but it is not wonderful. It is average an at best and Gary is not always a nice man. I've been there several times and listened to his rants and will not go back. As a business owner, he should have some class. The coffee should contain gold when I pay $17 for two coffees and two snacks. It's absurd.
(1)Janet M.
Wouldn't think to go anywhere else for coffee when I'm near Venice. Good breakfast sandwiches too.
(5)Caitlin M.
I'm so glad I found Gary and his coffee shop. All the beans are roasted on site as needed and his incredible knowledge lead to a perfect bean and the best cup of coffee you've ever had. I never knew good coffee until I came here and now I can't go anywhere else. The iced coffee is cold brewed meaning the coffee never looses caffeine. The breakfast items are great and they offer hard boiled eggs which is a nice accompaniment to a bread or pastry item. They also make paninis which take a few minutes but have made to order eggs on them-- my favorite is the sausage. I sometimes go out just to chat with the staff for a "pick me up".
(5)Troy H.
Watching Gary roast his beans is like watching Walter White and his quest for perfection!!! I've traveled the US, always looking for the best coffeehouse, and I've now found it - not on Capital Hill in Seattle, but Venice Florida. The roast, taste, staff, atmosphere, and everything in-between are perfect. For an added bonus, the food is make right there (the muffins and cookies are amazing). I could write a novel on this place, but the testimony is the lines out the door on a weekend. Gary, you created coffee heaven!!! Forget 5 stars, its 7!!!!
(5)Chris J.
Besides a fantastic array of coffee roasted to perfection in store, and delicious fresh food the staff was extremely helpful for us being first timers. Couldn't ask for a better experience.
(5)M B.
A follow up: I posted my original review on my way out of the shop. A few moments later a guy - who I assume is an owner/manager - pursues me out into the parking lot with two other male employees, interrupts my phone call, and demands to know why I gave them a bad review. I replied that I felt my reasons were clear in what I wrote; their aggressive attitude toward me wanting to take a photo, being barked at and called out in front of the whole restaurant made me feel unwelcome. Furthermore, three men pursuing me and menacingly demanding an explanation for a bad Yelp review is basically doubling down on a bad customer experience. He then bursts into a tirade about "...you people," "...go back to NY," "...hope you don't get into a [motorcycle] accident on your way home." He then finished by walking around behind my motorcycle, taking a picture of my license plate and then threatens that I'll be hearing from his lawyer (for who knows what). Simply unbelievable. If you take a moment to read through the reviews here, you'll notice most of the negative ones were only the result of off-putting service experiences (and bizarrely enough, this draconian 'no photos' silliness). Look, this shop has a lot of good things going on for it. They roast their own beans in-house which you rarely ever see, interior is well designed and they feature works for sale by local artists. Some of us would like to share what a cool time we had in this one-of-a-kind, locally owned and operated coffee shop with our friends on Instagram, Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp or wherever. Instead, here we are, writing about this. I can only imagine that it must be difficult competing with large enterprise franchises, but I can tell you this: fighting your customers is NOT the way to fight Starbucks.

I don't make it into Venice very often and when I do its a must I swing by! Luckily for everyone else in the car with me they had no choice but to go and see one of my must stop shops in Venice! Have to get an espresso truffle, shot of espresso, and a bag of beans for the road. Granted it has been a couple of months since my last visit it was great to see the same crew that was there on my first as well as my lasts visit are still there. Killer drinks + happy employees = 5 star experience
(5)J H.
The coffee was good but not great. For the price I expected a little more of brewing experience, a chem drip pot or something similar. Not poured from a giant brown thermos. The coffee is roasted on the premises always a plus. The food was great I had the Black Gold croissant and it was delicious.
(3)Rebecca G.
Legit. Perfect iced latte! Lots of seating and great atmosphere! Awesome local business!
(5)Daniel D.
Food is good coffee is great. I was just here a couple days ago for the first time. Had a really good experience. Decided to bring my family with me this time. Ordered a bunch of food and drinks. One of the drinks turned out to be to too sweet and I asked if they could redo it. To my surprise they told me they can redo it but would have to charge me for another drink. I think that's the first time I've ever heard that. Everyone in my party was shocked, immediate response was we're probably not coming back here again just because of the customer service. It's a bummer, really ruined the experience. It's a coffee place, we came in and dropped a 50 on their coffee...I'm sure anyone else would be happy to redo one latte just to make a happy customer. P.S. After I talked to the owner he offered to top it off with milk.
(2)Jenni S.
Best coffee shop in town! Super friendly customer service, my coffee is always made perfectly and the food never disappoints! Gary runs a great business which is why my family and I return weekly!
(5)Mary D.
Coffee Roasters the way coffee should be done! I choose their dark roast, full bodied, dark, no hint of the bitter others insist on roasting to. My daughter choose the berry smoothie, full of berry fruity deliciousness. We both had a cinnamon raisin bagel, with plain cream cheese. They came to the table with a perfect toast, while still being soft, with a pillow of whipped cheese on the side. If I lived in Venice, Florida, this would be my new hang out. Sadly, I can only order coffee through the mail from them (super yea!) And come on back when I visit here next time. Delish, 5 star, awesome and knowledgeable staff, a personal fav.
(5)Mark L.
The owner confronted my wife after I wrote an unfavorable review regarding my experience as a customer at his business. His answer to my review was to bully my wife with threats of a lawsuit if I didn't retract my review. It is unfortunate that Gary feels like he has to disenfranchise his customers to reach his success. I am certain that while his coffee is worthwhile, the experience I had there, and his threat to have me arrested if I ever return, will keep me from patronizing his business ever again. In case you are wondering, I bought a coffee in a ceramic cup and when I asked to pay for my refill to go, I was refused. I was told that I was only allowed to pay for a refill if it was in the same cup that I bought my first cup in. It seems shortsighted at best to humiliate a customer over the cost of a paper cup when you charge for your refills.
(1)Kate S.
Best place to get coffee in the Venice area hands down. And they also have great baked goods, salads and sandwiches and paninis.
(5)Hoolia C.
Best coffee roaster in the Gulf Coast. Don't bother with anyone else. The owner, Gary is a coffee roasting God. I used to own a coffee house so I'm a tough customer, and the Black Gold Coffee house team wins my heart every time; whether its a delicious sandwich at lunch or beans for my office and home, these folks have you covered with the best there is around. Don't delay- if you are in the area get your coffee on, or order online!
(5)Becca M.
Black Gold is THE best coffee shop ever! You must try a double Mocha Blanco with an Espresso Truffle- perfection! Gary and his whole staff are so welcoming and friendly. My whole family has become Black Gold addicts and we wouldn't want it any other way!
(5)Nicolette M.
They were very friendly and helpful! I tried there tropical citrus ice tea which had hints of mint and hibiscus. Hummus as a starter very good. Caprese sandwich it's missing a splash of vinegar The cheesy tomato was amazing!! Lastly the espresso truffle, perfect ending!!
(4)Earl G.
(This is in regards to the coffee only. I did not try the food.) Service was ok, but the coffee was a rip off. I guess for Venice, FL it's ok, and if you like something like Folgers you might be impressed. But over 3 dollars for a large plain coffee that is blah. In Venice? Come on! They want to be gourmet. They want to be crafty, but not even close. Me thinks not.
(2)baji d.
Visiting again and still love the coffee here. Not sure what all the fuss is about re the staff bc I've always been treated very nicely. The staff is hospitable and friendly. I don't usually linger or set up a computer or ask to use the restroom but I've never observed the type of aggressive behavior the other commenters have suffered. Still remains an excellent place for coffee and bagels in the morning.
(5)Pat A.
I keep forgetting that this gem is here! The Publix on Jacaranda and Venice Av is my primary supermarket. And I could be getting a cup of coffee every time I go there, But - the entrance to Publix is on Jacaranda, and Black Gold is around the corner on Venice Av so I forget it is there - - - I will have to place a yellow sticky reminder on my forehead. Why? Because this place is phenomenal. The coffee is true coffee. The kind where you don't need to add anything to it. The food is fresh, fresh, fresh. The bagels are true NY bagels. For lunch, I love their mushroom soup - even though it was hot outside. So flavorful. So now when I walk-in with the yellow sticky on my forehead, you will know why.
(5)Raymond M.
My wife and I are "coffee snobs" and were very impressed, Black Gold is Better than Stabucks! Super baked goods too.
(5)Jacqueline L.
The location is misleading, I promise this place has character. It has great service and roasts coffee on premises (no pictures allowed). I had the blueberry rooibos tea, which was to die for. They offer a free hot water refill so of course I did. They also have a decent food menu, including gluten free options. It's very clean, good quality and a gem. Too bad it's not closer to Sarasota.

My day isn't complete unless I stop to see Gary & his wonderful staff. Oh, yeah, and there's no better coffee, ANYWHERE. I love that it's locally owned, free trade, organic, locally/freshly roasted. There's just nothing here not to love! (edit) Two words: Blueberry Muffins!!!

By far best coffee I've tasted. Worth every penny. Have different kinds of coffee daily. you can also purchase beans, which I do, or they can grind it for you to bring home. Very good choice of breakfast options. Very, very friendly and professional staff. I'd come here any time, before going to a coffee chain. Visit at least 3 times a week, when my fresh beans runs out at home...

Sick of complaints about so called customers being asked to leave because they did not purchase something, but instead used the "free" WiFi and took up table space. These are not customers, these are free loaders. People, this is a small business trying to make a living. The wiFi is provided for paying customers. This is not a public place, it is a privately owned small business open to the public. Please let those of us who know and love this establishment for what they are and the wonderful coffee , service, and great people that come in day in and day out enjoy our coffee in peace without you trying to freeload and argue that it is your right to sit and not spend a dime. Do your meetings and/or interviews in your office if you cannot understand the concept of a coffeehouse owner trying to make a living by providing services to his paying customers. This establishment is well loved by most everyone, but the bad seeds always want the last word. Use some common sense.

Great locally roasted coffee. Shop local, support local businesses and get rid of the big guys! Go out of your way to stop here, great place and great people, little patio out front for eating and relaxing and a very cool roasting process inside!

Best cafe so far, we are from seattle and complete coffee snobs. There menu is true to cafe, and not interpreted.

Their coffee is excellent, and I always try to support local places. That being said, I've experienced bad service on two occasions and will not return. Most recently I planned to meet a work colleague prior to a customer meeting. I arrived early so I could enjoy some coffee. My partner arrived 15 min later and sat down at my table. The owner looked annoyed and came from behind the counter and asked if she would like to order. She declined and said we were about to leave. As I finished my coffee my partner said she needed to use the bathroom. The employee blocked her path and stated "the bathroom is for paying customers only". Shocked, she said that she was with me. He rebuffed her and said "he can use it but you can't." I understand the need for their policies. I see people squat at Starbucks for 6 hrs with a bottled water just for free wifi, but I always make an effort to purchase legit menu items and have promoted this place to friends and family. My partner was their for 5 min and you made her feel like a free loader. Sorry but I will never return! Too bad your service is more bitter than your coffee.

I needed to conduct an interview for work purposes and since I just moved to the area asked the person where to meet and he suggested this place. When I walked in he was already seated w/a coffee drink and muffin. I was neither thirsty or hungry and declined food or drink when asked twice. Didn't feel obligated to make an immediate purchase since person at the table had already bought something. There were plenty of open tables. I have done dozens of interviews at numerous Starbucks and other coffee shops. If I arrive first I always buy at least a drink, and if the person I'm meeting has arrived before me and already made a purchase I usually will not buy anything until after the interview, so as not to hold them up, but have never even been asked to purchase anything - I do so out of courtesy for using their place. These interviews usually take about 15 minutes and we weren't here even that long when the manager approached and insisted that I purchase something. I pointed out that my tablemate had made a purchase and he insisted I make a purchase or get out. I opted to get out. Not only would I get out, but I will never return and will be sure to tell everyone I know not to give them any business. Harassing customers into making a purchase is not a good business practice, and especially so for coffee shops that usually encourage people to lounge there utilizing their computers, chatting, and whatnot. I hope this is not a good indication of the customer service given in Venice.

This is NOT your average coffee house. The owner Gary, who is also the roaster, has a palate for coffee like no other. He is a master coffee roaster and a true artist with his craft. All of the coffee is fair trade and organic, so no chemicals and no slavery involved, just an incredible product that is sure to satisfy the foodie in you. And they ship, so if you're not local you don't need to miss out.

Excellent all around. I'm no coffee connoisseur, but know a good cup when I come across one. My wife and I enjoyed two fantastic blends along with homemade baked goods and truly authentic NY bagel. And to quote my wife... "the best yogurt parfait I've ever had." My only request... they open the next location in Orlando.

I am so impressed with Black Gold - I do not think I have had a better cup of coffee, and I am drinking decaf these days. It is incredible. The roast master is a master and an artist. Gary I salute you.

By far the best organic free trade coffee on the planet! You will never have chain coffee again once you try Black & Gold Coffee Roasters! My favorite currently is the Organic Guatemala Finca Ceylan Fair Trade, chocolate, sweet vanilla aroma, smooth body with a floral finish. I always have a new love each time I try a new bean. You must also try a bagel w/ Lox, cream cheese, capers, red onion, lemon and dill....amazing!

Excellent coffee, some if the best I've had if not the best. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Food was high quality, extremely fresh and delicious. I'm from NY on vacation and the bagels are legit, made me feel like home. This is definitely a must stop.

Great coffee, great people, great food! It's one thing to find a great independent coffee house but it's quite another to have it also be an artisan roaster who is able to get some of the most exclusive beans from around the world. Thanks for the tour Gary!

I am a starbucks gold card holder, and that never leaves my wallet when in town. This is the real deal when it comes to coffee drinks. The owner is a true subject matter expert on coffee, and he will baffle and wow any and all coffee snobs, aficionados, and casual drinkers. Add it to the list - you will be glad you did!
