Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

Foods to Avoid at Village Inn for Diabetics

Village Inn offers very few items edible for diabetics without any threat. You can avoid sandwiches and burgers at Village Inn and try the light breakfast items on the menu. You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Avoid Soup bowls and opt for cups instead at Village Inn.

First, let me say that I'm probably biased but this is my friends and I's spot. Every Wednesday, free piece of pie with any purchase. They have some of the best breakfast food around, especially for the price. The V.I.B. with so many different breakfast combinations is great for anyone and there eggs benedict is the best in town. Everything's so fresh from the fruit to the crispy bacon to the orange juice, love it. Especially their strawberry french toast, perfect. But there dinner and lunch options are nothing to sneeze at. Great comfort food for affordable prices with an old school, 1950's diner feel. Absolutely adore this place.

Still my favourite diner in Tampa, they deliver every single time! Wednesday free pie day is a bonus, and Village Inn Build Your Own breakfast menu is so much fun and absolutely one of our favourites.

What a disappointing breakfast experience! The food was as greasy as the manager who was more concerned about hitting on women rather than running the restaurant. The service and food were sub-par at best. We will not be returning. Go to Dennys.

Fast, cheap and friendly. This location has been a late night staple in South Tampa for as long as I can remember. There's nothing on the menu that will blow you away, but it's consistently made well and the coffee rocks. It's definitely above the competition in the area for late night grub.

Love the price, workers, speedy service and yummy food. Their pies are worth falling off the "watch your weight" wagon from time to time. On Sundays, there's usually a wait but they move pretty quickly. Remember to put your name on the list as soon as you walk in if there's a wait, the check-in stand is conveniently located next to the pie display.

I don't know why, but this is my least favorite Village inn. I know the decor is drab and unknowing and servers are abrupt and act entitled. I guess, I know the food is the same standard quality, but I never really enjoy eating here. It has to be the atmosphere and me, just not a good match. I always try to avoid this location, but sometimes it is the best spot to meet. The line " it isn't you, its me" seems to apply here. I guess when you are eating diner food in a dingy locale, it can take it from the possibility of exciting right down to almost a duty. What's a girl to do? I love most dives and diners, but this one just doesn't make me happy.

First- I love that this is a local, family owned business. Come here for that alone. Second- the coffee is delicious and my Garden Veggie Omelette was great! My daughter's had the Funny Face breakfast and loved it. Come here for good food.

You know....it's open 24 hours! It's got breakfast, lunch and dinner! You can get any of those any time of day or night! You can get FREE pie on Wednesdays! The food is tasty! The coffee is good! What more do you want? It's the best 24 hour spot anywhere!

I've been to this location twice now, and had two very different experiences. My first visit was some months ago; the restaurant was less than a quarter full and it was around 9:30 on a weekday morning. The trouble began, quite literally, as I walked in. There was no hostess at the station, but one employee at the cash register. The employee at the register looked up at me; shrugged; said, "I have no idea where they are;" and proceeded to ignore me. Eventually a hostess did show up and directed me to a table. Another customer came in and was seated at the table next to me. The server was friendly, took my order and that of the table next to me, brought our coffees . . . and disappeared. A manager came around and chatted up the various customers in the dining room. I let him know it was my first visit and he replied that he would make certain I enjoyed my visit. I saw him walk up to someone I assume was the front of house manager and tell her to make certain I was taken care of. I observed another incident in which a customer walked in to find no hostess and the employee at the cash register turned around to shout across the restaurant for someone to come up. Still missing my server after half an hour, I flagged down another passing staff member to ask when I could expect to eat. Some time later, the same manager as before came out and served me, as well as that customer in the next booth. The other customer pointed out several mistakes, so he went to fix hers. I had scrambled eggs, corned beef hash, hash browns, and pancakes. The eggs and hash browns were unseasoned and bland, while the corned beef hash was salty. In addition, the eggs were greasy, the hash browns were barely warm on top and nearly burnt on the bottom (as though the cook had simply dropped them on the flat top and not bothered to move them again), and the hash was merely warmed through, without the crispy bits one expects to have if fried on a griddle (I suspect they were microwaved). After eating what I could of the above, I was ready to dive into my pancakes. I managed to get two bites of those down. They were flavorless and heavy, turning into a pasty, floury ball that sucked all the moisture out of my mouth and made it nearly impossible to choke down. My server finally came back long enough to apologize because she'd been on break and to leave the check, then dashed off again. I never did see that wandering manager again. When I got to the register, a new employee had replaced the earlier one who'd ignored me. I told her things hadn't been very good, and the front of house manager waved it off, telling her to comp me the meal, then went off to do something else. I declined the offer of the comp, because neither the cashier nor the manager bothered to ask me what problems I'd had. They weren't interested in fixing the issues, only in buying me off. That was probably the most insulting part of the whole visit. The entire episode left me with the impression they have issues with its management. First, the front of house manager wasn't watching the hostess station, allowed customers to be seated in a section where the server was due to go on break, and didn't ensure someone covered that missing server. My food should never have left the kitchen. The cook, the kitchen manager, and the manager who served the dishes failed to catch the problems. Upper management either failed to train them or else considers that to be acceptable. Then there was that final incident where I was brushed off with a comp; I didn't even get an apology. If the front of house manager, kitchen manager, and that wandering manager all failed to do their jobs, I have to assume the store's upper management doesn't care or doesn't know what to do. That being said, I was convinced by several colleagues to give the Village Inn another shot. So here I am again, same time, same day. I was seated promptly, and my server did not disappear after delivering my coffee. I had over-medium eggs, turkey sausage, oatmeal, and an orange crepe. The eggs were cooked perfectly and not greasy, though they were still unseasoned--a dash of salt and pepper would do wonders, and adding seasoning after the fact isn't the same. The turkey sausage could have been cooked a little longer, until the casing started to crisp, but was pleasantly spicy. Unfortunately, they were also very small. The crepe was mixed, being very thick and doughy, but tasty, as were the filling and topping. The oatmeal was nearly inedible, overcooked and dense. It was almost more of an "oat pudding." I couldn't even stir in the brown sugar. I left most of my bowl uneaten. I did hear the servers coordinating among themselves this time, and that showed in the quality of service received. Between my visits, I'd currently rank this location 2.5 stars. Since Yelp doesn't let reviewers split stars, I'm rounding up to three given the improvement shown, and will be back to determine if the improvements continue.

Enjoying my free breakfast this glorious veteran's day! Can't go wrong with any of the breakfast items on the menu. I usually get the eggs bacon and pancakes, but since the French Toast was complimentary today, French Toast it was. Great choice. Keep up the good work VI!

Great customer service here. Also, the prices aren't too bad. I had 2 slices of french toast, 2 eggs, hashbrowns and wheat toast. Yes, all of it :)

Nicole, our server, was very nice! She's the only reason why I'm giving one star. The hostess, who might have been the manager also, was rude and skipped us and sat two couples before us even though she saw us walk in before them. Honestly, I felt like she was treating us differently bc of our race and bc of the race of the two couples who she sat before us who walked in after us. Her attitude, demeanor and the way she spoke when she did speak to us was entirely too rude for someone who deals with people and works in hospitality/customer service but was peachy and extremely kind to the other couples. She saw us walk in behind the first couple and even made eye contact with me as she walked back to the host stand and greeted the other couple. When she came back I was standing right up against the host stand and her attitude towards us was rude and not welcoming at all. She had an attitude the entire way to the table and threw the menus down on the table once we arrived at our booth. Our food took an extremely long time to be delivered to our table, so our server offered us 20% off our bill. When we went back up to the rude hostess to pay she questioned why we were receiving 20% off and was reluctant to give us the discount but eventually did after my boyfriend had to explain the situation. I will take my business elsewhere and never return to this location.

Disgusting. Food was ICE cold. Cold eggs are disgusting. It's a shame, will never go here again. Waitress never asked how food was, cashier never asked either, and when I told the manager, he mumbled something at me. Worst place ever, poor food and service. Totally disappointed.

Cobb salad was fresh & delish, Strawberry Cream Cheese Crepes are 5 Star yummy goodness, the Ultimate Skillet is a meat-lovers, mounds of BlueBerry Pancakes were the table favorite! Eggs Benedict was warm and Hashbrowns were perfectly crispy.

Of course, after living in Minnesota, we would unintentionally wind up at a Baker's Square equivalent, lol. So Village Inn and Baker's Square are one in the same. For us that's alright. It might not be a true local speciality but it isn't a chain that we have back home in Texas, and it brought back memories, so once we figured it out we were happy =) I got their build your own breakfast type of deal with french toast, eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns. A lot of good food! I forget what my husband got...oops. It was breakfast though. Though we were way full we HAD to participate in the free pie Wednesday deal. I mean, it's free pie. This chain is reliably good. I don't like IHOP or Denny's but I like these guys. We've never had a bad experience at either Baker's Square or, now, Village Inn. The people are friendly, the restaurants are clean. Village Inn seemed a tad old outdated but that's actually cool with me.

Surprised this place didn't have 5 stars. Some of the best food I've eaten in a while. I ordered buttermilk pancakes with a caramel apple pie and was blown away. I was skeptical at first and now I will be a regular customer.

I eat here basically every Sunday morning. The food isn't amazing but it's good. The servers were kind of hit and miss. But I understand when it's busy so it's not ever a very big deal. I like that they give you coffee in a thermos. I never have to wait for refills that way.

To start I just want to say our waitress was very good, but I was not happy with waiting. Arrived around 10:15 and left after 11. We ate fast but the food took forever for a simple egg breakfast. The manager was running around trying to seat people but did not check in on us, and he even stopped and leaned against our booth at one point, which I thought was a little rude, since his back end was almost on our table. The eggs were almost uncooked, and the syrup was very watery, and that's no exaggeration. The waitress said somehow water must have gotten into in and brought us another one, which was still very thin and watery for syrup. Checkout was a mess as well, there was a lot of employees running back and forth and they only stopped at the register after a line of more than 4 people formed, I think I was in line for at least 5 minutes and all I was using was cash.

Can't beat the Village Inn for breakfast when you don't want to wait for 45 minutes on a Sunday :) We have become GIANT fans of the VIB, where you pick any 4 of the long long long list of things like: pancakes, crepes, eggs, oatmeal, hash browns, toast, etc. 8 bucks pp or less & you're satisfied! I get in to carb overload at this place because I can and I like it. Service is always quick and efficient. DIG. * I tried a Strawberry Crepe the other day...been dreaming about another one since.

We arrived late, with a party of 16 :-) No problem, it's the Pancake House! We all loved the food, service was wonderful and we all got exactly what we ordered without any problems. Enjoyed the company and the place is always on point when you crave good hearty food.

This is a high four star rating for breakfast. Skillets are the mark for skillets. Pancakes are great. The have a lot of off the menu items, like the German pancake, that must be ordered only if the weather is conducive to its rising. The French Skillet is a favorite of my girls. Dinner is OK. Dinner must be ordered with care. I would recommend the open faced roast beef, or have breakfast for dinner.

It is what it is. You can't expect much going into a Village Inn. And for one of the few family friendly places open late, it does the job: fill your stomach with good food. I just want to say TRY THE PUMPKIN PANCAKES.

  • Tiffany B.

Update- This used to be my favorite diner until I actually discovered what a good diner should be. First, the reason why I left V.I. and started trying other places- the service is consistently terrible. From the waitresses who drop off the check with your food and never come back to check on you or fill a drink (has happened multiple times there) to the one waitress in particular who actually touched my friend's sunny side up eggs. TOUCHED IT WITH HER BARE HANDS. Hell no. That's just disgusting. Who knows what else goes on there if that's okay! The food is alright. It's on par with your average chain diner- Denny's, Waffle House, etc. It tastes good, but leaves you feeling like crap afterward because it's drowning in grease. Bottom line, if my review were just for the food, I'd give them 3 stars, but the service just brings the place down so much that I've sworn off ever eating there again. Hence, one star. I'll be heading to Nicki's or Ranch House for breakfast, thankyouverymuch!

This place has been a staple late night spot. I remember coming here when I was still in high school some 10 years ago and it still looks exactly the same as I remember. The food is that perfect diner food and tastes better after a night of drinking. The portions are always huge and the pies are a blessing from on high. The night I checked in, we had two waitresses. One was typically friendly and the other one was an older southern belle whose graciousness and charm exuded as she served us and brought us fresh drinks. She made the evening a delight. I still enjoy this spot, even if I am 10 years older from the last time I was here.

Ordered bacon extra crispy. Bacon they brought was only lightly fried. When we told the waitress it was not as we ordered she insisted upon taking back the original bacon to the kitchen to the point of argument. Since when do you have to trade food in that was cooked wrong? She even said that if the kitchen didn't get the original bacon back there will be a charge for the correctly cooked bacon. Obviously they're going to serve that bacon to another customer. We've been coming here for 15 years. It's a shame the service has declined so much.

Damn what happened?!? Years ago I came to The Village and it was fire!! The food was good the service was perfect. After a night out in clearwater came here for a breakfast plate I called ahead so I can carry out which was the best thing to do because there was a huge crowd there when I pulled in, the plate came up to $11.25 a lil high for grits and corn beef hash. Got home to see my food it was a lil funky looking lol the grits were in a cup and was so damn bland but the hash was on point. I will give them another shot at gaining my love for the village again. P. S. One time for the two drunk girls who was in the waiting area pasted the hell out drunk!! One was sleep using her purse as her pillow now that was thinking with your head.

Walking in at 11PM, we were lucky to find a place in the area that was still open. The food was average, on par with an ihop but certainly better than waffle house. $4.09 for a bowl of chili seemed a little steep considering the quality. I did not try the pie, which is what they are known for, so maybe if I did my review would be better. The pumpkin pie with whipped cream did look VERY GOOD!

I went here for brunch and it was excellent. I was seated and acknowledged by my waitress (Tina) quickly. My food was perfect. I ordered the veggie omelet without mushrooms so Tina recommended the sauce on the side since it had mushrooms! Excellent choice. I also had the multi grain pancakes which came out steaming hot. Tina was very attentive to all of her tables and didn't miss a thing! Overall delicious food, exceptional service and quick. Would def go back!

My favorite breakfast place in Tampa. Yes, I know it's a chain and I don't care. We always get good service and excellent food.

    (5)
  • Melly S.

Yes, it's a chain, so you expect a wide variety of choices, seasonal options and consistent food...but what makes this location worth a Yelp review is the efficient service and always pleasant staff. Is there a more personable manager than Mike? His sincere welcome to all and ability to be on top of everything under his roof is excellent and the reason we find ourselves there more Sunday mornings than not...can't always have patience for Pach's, Pinky's, Datz wait for a table. Breakfast is our meal of choice at VI - L/D probably OK if you stick to basics. And don't forget Free Slice of Pie Wednesday at VI!

It's a Village Inn so you know what the food is. This location can be extremely busy and very crowded so you may have a wait. We had a 25 minute wait then after being seated we had another 5 to 6 minutes before our server took our order. The food was decent but not sure I will go back here the waits are just too long.

Many a time, this Village Inn was an after-musical staple from the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center for me. Until just recently, they were really good, with secret menu items from the 60s, and friendly staff. Things have changed, unfortunately. Last time I went, I called my order in a few hours early to make sure it would be in stock by the time I arrived, and reserved a table. When we arrived later, not only did we have to wait fifteen minutes, but our waiter did not even address us for a good twenty minutes. When he finally did, I was informed that the pancake batter was not prepared, and that it would take a half hour to mix and make it. While the other people in my group ordered, I chose to not eat. After twenty eight minutes of watching him stand around at another table chatting with the people, he brought our food to our table; It was cold, and tasted abysmal, according to my table. As we left, he sent me a scowl I will never forget.

If you like breakfast food, this is a good place to go. I like having their menu options, but I also like being able to customize my meal. They have some healthy options, too, which is a big bonus in my book. Next time, I want to try some pie...they all look so good!
