I visit for the first time one of my friend recommended and the guy at front was very welcoming and have given good service and other guy from kitchen came out named Ajay as its my friend name so I remember his name and suggest us to have rava dosa and he said he gone make it for us and when the food came out its was delicious and crunchy and was very tasty. I was very pleased with the food and the service by the other guy. If you would go to this place ask for Ajay he gives best suggestion and cook the food very good. I would suggest you to go in evening so you get good service and food.....

People who have rated this as good, I notice are mostly non Indians. The Indians know this place is bad. We had to return the idli as it was cold and undercooked. The dal, Sambhar and rasam were low on taste and salt.

Was excited to see a restaurant in the Tampa Bay Area that primarily served South Indian food. I have visited this place for both the lunch buffet and dinner. While the lunch buffet obviously offers more options for a great price, I prefer ordering off the menu. Reason being the lunch buffet doesn't seem to be very fresh, especially the idlis and vadas. Overall an above average experience, with this place being a welcome break from your average indian restaurant serving the typical palak paneer and butter chicken.

The service was so bad I couldn't even enjoy the food. Plus, the establishment is dirty.

Awesome food. Great price. Good size portions. All vegetarian cuisine, so if you must eat meat, it's not for you. But if you are adventurous and have never had Indian before, this place is definitely a good start.

We love this place. The service leaves much to be desired but the food is good. I love Indian food from this region. It is a nice change. It is vegetarian here but you would never miss the meat!! Order a bunch of different things and enjoy trying the different foods.

Don't be turned off by the small quaint location behind a mattress center. This place serves some of the best vegetarian south indian food in the states! The buffet is always different so you are always trying new items. The yellow dahl is the real reason we keep coming back. And it's amazing with the complimentary dosa. The servers are always attentive, but not overly friendly, which is fine. They warm up to you after a few visits. The buffet is a great value. The regular menu has many south indian classics, also for a great value. The tomato rice is one of their specialities.

Food was average. The service was bad. Waitress did not care about customers. I ordered something and never received it.

My husband and I were not impressed by the service here. We seated ourselves without so much as an acknowledgement by the ppl who worked there (who appeared to be busy eating lunch). When they finally looked up at us, we asked if we should just serve ourselves at the buffet - we got a terse head jerk. The selection was tiny, and since we came in an hour from when the buffet was over once things were gone, they didn't refill them. When we got back to our table, there was no water, so I asked if we could have some. The guy just plopped a pitcher and 2 empty glasses on the table and walked off. The moment my husband when to pour us water, the top came off and water poured all over him. No one came to offer us a towel, nor even looked up to see why he had yelled in surprise. The food was decent- but I missed having standard things like paneer. There was a ton of bean dishes, if you like that. To be honest, I had VERY low expectations because I've been spoiled in MD with some of the best Indian restaurants and from home cooked meals with friends- I wasn't expecting much. No one came to clear our plates, so the dishes just started piling up as we went for more servings. Finally we were ready to go, and I had to wave someone down for the check. Seriously customer service is NOT a priority here. So, they would get 1 star for service and 3 stars for food- averaging out at 2 stars. I definitely won't be back. I don't think they would care.

This place is great for takeout Indian food. My hubby and I usually call to go for their food when we feel like Indian food but don't want to make it. I'm not a fan of eating in at this place because I think they make the food better when you order to go.

Best dosa in this area. As for service and ambience? Minimal. However, I have never eaten at an Indian restaurant with quality customer service. Usually, I am happy if my order is correct and tasty. On this day, I ordered a rava dosa and my kids each ordered a masala dosa with total bill under $20. I love that the kids menu serves full portions for less $$. I have eaten here for the past five years.

Terrible! Service is so slow ...we were the only ones in the restaurant and it still took a LONG time. Ordered gobi manchurian ...it was stale, too salty and flavorless. Pani puri came with only potatoes and some sauce ...none of the other fixings! Coconut chutney is always stale ...tastes gross. The ONLY good thing is the batura and dosa (if they are fresh)

At Udipi, I order Masala Dosa, everything else is secondary. I am giving it five stars, just for the food. To me, that is all that matters. Udipi Café is a very nice change from the usual Indian restaurants in Tampa Bay. Since the restaurant is noted more of a casual "Café," there are casual snack items offered that you would not normally find on South Indian menus in Tampa, such as; -Chaat- Udipi refers to this portion of the menu as their "Mumbai Chaat Corner," Indian style snacks that are a mixture of sweet, salty, crunchy, spicy, and creamy. Typically a crunchy salty snack covered in yogurt topping to share. Excellent when the weather is hot outside. -Dosa (Dosai)- The house specialty, so you must order it. I recommend the classic Masala Dosa, which in Wednesday nights is only $3.99! It is massive, amazingly delicious, fresh, and cheap. The coconut chutney it comes with is also bangin'. -Poories/Uttappum/Chickpea Doughnuts- Where else has these delicious style breads offered and prepared on premises? -Thali- A traditional sampler platter of various dishes and breads, served on a metal platter. You will feel like royalty and be able to try many dishes at once, not breaking the bank. You will not find this option at many other restaurants in the area. Most of the curries are cream based, so their specialty curry is the Vegetable Korma--- mixed vegetables, cream sauce, and nuts. However, if a restaurant offers okra I have to order it, so the Bindi Curry for me is a must try. The side rice does not come buttered, but all curries are served with a side of cucumber yogurt (riata). Many rice dishes offered, like even more than I have ever seen anywhere. They also make all of their desserts and ice creams from scratch. The entire menu is vegetarian. The food is so flavorful, you will not miss the meat. Lunch buffet is offered every day, except Monday. Just as the casual feeling persists in the restaurant, the food prices are also casual and almost everything is under $10.00 and meant to share. Don't expect a white table cloth and fine dinnerware, this is a casual diner-ish cafe serving up cheap and fascinatingly flavorful foods in a simple family-style atmosphere. You will be surrounded by families chatting and sharing foods, having a great time. Service is not the best, so be a little pushy to get what you want, if needed.

My was very worried when I moved to Tampa I would not find an Indian restaurant I liked, but Udipi squashed those fears! The restaurant is clean, the staff friendly and the food delicious. I have a feeling this is going to become one of my regular haunts.

Nice South Indian food, a bit far from where I live but when I'm next in the area I'll definitely go! :)

Best south indian food I have eaten so far in Tampa. Make sure to call them in advance if you are going with big groups in peek hours. Lots of options for vegetarians. There was very small place for buffet so we had to wait in line for food. But it was satisfying. Dosa was very crunchy. Bottom line- I would again like to go there. It was worth driving 45 minutes for such good food.

Terrible place. It used to be nice. I had piece of wire from scrubber in my pongal. The waiter just took back and nothing. No apology. This place is hygiene disaster.

So first of all, I'm Indian so I know a think or two about Indian food. This restaurant was probably about 4 stars when it first opened but has quickly gone downhill. It's sad to see this because vegetarian restaurants are already so rare but the owners clearly are trying to stifle every dollar out of their customers and the business here. We ordered a mixed variety of dishes, nothing tasted fresh! The dry Gobi Manchurian was slightly bland and the texture not as crunchy as it would have been it if was fresh and soggy making it clear that it was reheated. Next the bhel puri came out almost instantly after ordering telling me that it was pre-prepared and 'ready to go' and certainly tasted like it. Two dosas which came out pretty fast but were just bland: the fillings inside were just a mushy, clearly pre-prepared vegetable mix. The dosa itself was clearly not fresh as it would not be so chewy otherwise. The sambaar was also just plain bland. Last came the bland Paneer Bhurji which I had overlooked had included tofu since the dish stated "homemade cheese tofu" on the menu. I asked the waitress why a "paneer" ("cheese" in hindi) dish had all tofu in it since that's certainly what it tasted like and tofu is not something that is used in any Indian cooking whatsoever! She argued with me that the menu did state tofu and that it was a cheese-tofu mix where it was clearly all tofu. Regardless, she should have realized that I was not satisfied with the dish but did not care. I decided I wouldn't sit there and argue with her if she can't recognize that a customer is dissatisfied! To top it off, the service was terrible. The dishes were all brought out separately. The waiters were changed several times and they had not refilled our water jug even once when it was empty. At the end of the meal, someone did ask how our meal was and when we complained about the quality, he just gave us a blank stare and didn't say anything! I will not be visiting again and try to discourage others as much as I can from visiting!

I'd rather starve. Didn't know it was possible to make Indian food flavorless. You could open a can of chick peas and pour into tomato soup and have a better experience. Don't even consider it. No atmosphere, cramped and no personality.

Udipi was a delightful surprise, as it is difficult to find good Indian food in the Tampa Bay Area. The decor was simple, the clientele mainly consisted of South Indian and Indian American families, and the food was tasty and spicy - a great example of enjoyable vegetarian comfort food. The service was friendly, polite and attentive; in addition, the server made sure to inquire about dietary preferences, stating that most items could be made vegan as well. For dinner, I tucked into a simple dish of uthappam with chutney and rasam (a spicy soup). For dessert, we split the carrot halwa (grated carrot sweetened with honey and butter) served with the in-house mango ice cream. Although we eat meat, both my partner and I really enjoyed this all-vegetarian restaurant, as did our two vegetarian friends who accompanied us. Two thumbs up - we will be back.

Not bad, but not the best I've ever had. Try Taste of India in Brandon. It's more authentic.

We were 4 indians, we went there 2130 hours, restaurant website says it closes at 2200. The lady who served us told us we had to order everything we wanted because they closed the kitchen at 2245! While we were eating, the one man started to vacuum annoying our experience. We did not get a water refill once. We ordered dessert and while we were enjoying dessert and a conversation, we were asked multiple times if we wanted our dessert packed!!! Highly annoying! Then while we finishing our dessert they turn the lights off a few times hinting to us that they are trying to close!!! Worst service ever. Chefs are Ok.

Like most comments here, the service is horrible. However, we didn't realize how little they cared until today. My wife is allergic to any dairy (not just lactose intolerance, but more severe). After asking if a certain dish had cream, we were told no. But when it came out, we had the guy ask the chef who then confirmed it DID have cream. So they said they will make it again without cream, but they took it to the back and not 10 seconds later brought it out again. It was clear it was the exact same dish and when we asked them to just cancel it all together, they refused. They were just playing games and didn't care about anyone's health. My wife took one bite thinking maybe they were being honest and later that night broke out into hives proving there was dairy in it. Extremely disappointed in their lack of care which to me points to potential other issues in the kitchen.

Came here for dinner, was bit nervous based in negative review about the customer service. Service do need basics but given my low expectation it turned out to be okay. South Indian thali was not bad but it was nothing compared to Bhimas in LA. A+ for faster service, A+ for proper quantity of food, B- for the selection of curries, B+ for the over all experience. You can try this place if you are in this area and I will be coming back if I am in this area.

I have been eating at this restaurant since I was in college at USF. One of my favorite foods is masala dosa and this restaurant has the best masala dosa in Tampa! Everything I have ordered here was great from the dosas, vadas, idlis and the rasmali! I definitely recommend this restaurant to any and all individuals who enjoy Indian food.

Udupi offers authentic Indian vegetarian food. The food is good but the dissapointing fact is their client service .I have been there only thrice and all the three times I did mot enjoy a great client servicing experience..For people who just want to grab some good dosas and don't really care about how they are treated then this place can be tried .

I am making this review due to the number of bad reviews for service. I have been coming here for many years. I am,obviously, a Non-Indian and i have only been treated with a warm welcome. The wait staff is as attentive as any other restaurant. If you want better service i would consider treating the employees well and not as your servants. A little kindness goes a long way. I have gotten special dishes FREE at Udipi Cafe, brought out complimentary. I just treat people the way they deserved to be treated; not like your family servant back home.

Disappointing is not the word! Tried the Sunday buffet and being a South Indian restaurant, the buffet menu had hardly any South Indian dishes. The food was very bland and is meant to cater to the American palate and not meant for the Desi population. You'll end up adding salt and pepper to pretty much everything including the masala in the masala dosa. I wouldn't recommend it to any Desi and will probably never go back again!

Came to this restaurant with high expectations. After entering got a table. As we were a large group we had to drag the tables by ourselves!! No water was served. Just a jug of water was placed in front of you and you were expected to help yourself. Then the long wait for the server started. Finally the orders were placed, with an oddly reticent server Ordered the following: Mysore Coffee: barely average Kancheepuram idli: certainly not fresh Mysore Masala Dosa: average The food came swift enough. But, was this a place worth driving 10+ miles for. I don't think so.

My roomie and I were craving some Indian food and based on all the reviews we decided to go here. As we sat down and i looked though the menu hunting down some butter chicken did i realize this was a vegetarian restaurant (seriously just saw the ratings and not the reviews).. so i decided to go with the Paneer masala.. WOW was it tasty. I normally take home left overs but this was one of the few times i ate the whole thing..

This is the only South Indian place in Tampa bay (Besides the temple canteen) and they're awesome. Udipi style service that's quick as ever, delicious South Indian style chana bhatura, Mysore sada dosa and yummy uttapam, and spring dosa. Definitely not like what you'd get in India but close enough to enjoy a south Indian meal!

  • Day W.

Was introduced to the place by an Indian acquaintance. Walked in on a Friday night, and the place was filled with Indian folks. Good sign, yes? Not sure if it's authentic Southern Indian but to my non-Indian taste buds, they were very tasty. Should had seen my face when I was told after we sat down that it's a vegetarian place. I'm not a vegetarian but the food was so tasty I'd go back. The service was sufficient. As long as I get the food within a reasonable amount of time, and the food is really good, I'd put up with the average customer service.

  • Stewart B.

I have been here a number of times....I have had problems with the service but the food has always been great here. People confuse this with other Indian restaurant where most of the food is Punjabi/North Indian with cream, ghee, more spices....Udipi is more south indian...so the difference in taste. If I were you, order south indian dishes here rather than ordering north Indian. Sambar vada, idly, dosa are some of the things that's best served here. That being said, this place is usually packed and takes time to get a table and takes time to get menu, takes time to get the food. Service is really slow sometimes, but I really like the food, haven't been disappointed so far. Also keep in mind its purely vegetarian restaurant...so no meat, fish or eggs.

I love this place and wish there was a location closer to me. Everything on the menu is excellent and the prices are really affordable. I recommend Dhai Vada, any of the curries, and the Indian Spiced Tea.

You know what they always say, you know its good Indian food when the restaurant is packed full of it's countrymen, and this place always is! Udipi's specialty is vegetarian Indian cuisine with a LARGE menu of delicious, authentic Indian dishes. Whats even better is that they have a grasp of vegan and can typically tell you right away what items are vegan and not. The location is modest, in a strip mall near N. Dale Mabry, and the interior is pleasing enough. The service is good and the wait stuff if pretty quick to refill your waters (a must at an Indian restaurant!). Priced pretty reasonably, especially considering its ease of being all-vegetarian.

I'm so glad that I stumbled into this restaurant on my way back to Atlanta from Tampa .I was there for lunch buffet and the quality of food was very good .The staff was very friendly and welcoming .I would rate this 4 star only because couple of items on the buffet were slightly greasy but overall it was a good experience. I will visit this restaurant again when in town.

  • Steph L.

Cuisine was pretty good. Very impressed, especially since my group was mostly vegetarian. I like the vast selections I got to chose from considering i usually order the same thing because I don't know any better. I tried something that resembled a large crepe with a coconut wrap and filled with potatoes and veggies, all served with a coconut chutney and another red sauce. Very impressed considering my hometown in the Bay. Price to portion ratio was impeccable, as well. I was filled up just on that $6 crepe because it was about a foot and a half long in circumference. DONE! Service was ehhh....that's where they lost a star. Took four attempts to just get a glass of ice...not nice!

  • Joseph M.

The only reason I don't give it the 5th star is the fact I am not a vegetarian. I always eat too much, the food is great for a buffet. Staff is attentive and good at keeping your glass full. This is one of my favorite places for a healthy lunch.

The dishes were just OK. The sambar was not authentic enough. The coconut chutney was too oily. The channa in channa batura was OK.

Gorgeous Indian food. Authentic, fresh, better than crack. Comparable to what you would actually find in an upscale restaurant in India. They are the real deal. The only problem I find is that I can't stop eating, it's so darn good.

    (5)
  • Anonymous P.

They do a great job at this relatively new South Indian restaurant (the first in Tampa I believe). The dosas are excellent, and they have things you can't find even in major cities (like the rava masala dosa). The lunch buffet is definitely a winner. A marvelous addition to Tampa's ethnic dining scene.
