I absolutely love the sushi at Toki! The quality of the food (especially the sashimi) is fresh and great tasting. Every time we go we always get greeted by their friendly staff. It's a gem in the Carrollwood area that anyone who enjoys sushi should check out.

There is nothing like the other pics showed!!! I never give out review on Yelp, but I had to comment on this restaurant! I am a sushi lover, the fish was poorly cut and the sushi rice is tasteless. The dynamite we had was extremely salty and loads of mayos. I took one bite left the rest on the table. This is the worst experience l've ever had in a 4.5 star restaurant, please avoid at all cost!!!

I'm sorry I didn't write a review for Toki years ago. It is definitely the best sushi around. The service is great. Everything is well made and fresh. They even have one of my rarely found favorites, agedashi tofu. Sometimes I find myself wanting to try new sushi places, but there really is no reason to, because Toki is that good.

Good sushi! Good service. Loved the tempura bagel roll. Also had the beef teriyaki dinner box. Split the box and roll between two people - good portion. Beef was sliced very thin, but a little tough. Could have been time of day, went there just before closing. Otherwise no complaints.

My Yelp friends Christy T., and her fiancé, David H. (from Orlando) joined me for a superlative-laden sushi banquet at Toki Sushi on N. Dale Mabry in Carrollwood this past weekend. The three of us are sushi fanatics -- we like our sushi pure, and not rolled up with a bunch of gunk inside and dripping with sickly sweet sauces. As a result we had been plotting an evening at a local sushi house to test the skills of the resident sushi master. I have been a loyal client of Toki Sushi for over ten years, and have become good friends with head chef, Chris, who was classically trained in Japan, and who brought his skills to the US about 40 years ago. With Chris's help we planned an evening of Omakase delights for the three of us to enjoy. At the appointed time, I arrived and said "Konichiwa, Itamae" to Chris, which is the formal way of greeting the sushi master, and showing respect for his craft. The concept of Omakase is basically saying "Chef's choice", or more correctly "We are putting our trust in you to deliver the best possible meal for us". Since Chris and I had arranged for the Omakase meal in advance, he was able to order some special treats and to arrange very elegant preparations for us to enjoy. The Omakase meal is served as a series of small plates where the tastes, textures, and sensual delights flow smoothly from one dish to the next. Chris asked if there was anything that we didn't like, and then set about placing the courses in front of us one at a time. I've included photos for each course, but here are the descriptions: #1 - Octopus and Shrimp miso salad #2 - Tuna Tataki #3 - Squid with yuzu tobiko and Squid with uni #4 - Chutoro - Medium-fatty Tuna #5 - Marinated Sea Bass #6 - Seared Salmon Belly #8 - Mackarel Roll #9 - Uni and Firecracker (mixed with Octopus) #10 - Giant Clam #11 - Squid with wasabi tobiko and Albacore Tuna #12 - Sushi handroll with Eel and sliced Avocado 12 courses of incredible deliciousness that we're still talking about. This was not an inexpensive meal - roughly $75 a piece, but if you truly love sushi then you owe it to yourself to try an Omakase meal sometime at the hands of a sushi master. Chris entertained us with stories of his training in Japan, and we discussed techniques for cleaning and preparing the fish, as well as his amazing knife skills as he shaved wafer-thin slices of fish and rested them atop his carefully-crafted rice. This was a spectacular evening with two great Yelp friends, and the wizardry of our chef. Domo arigato, Itamae!

Wowza! Va va voom! Spectacular. Hubby and I went here Wed around 8. It was pretty quiet and the hostess doubled as the waitress. She was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. Since it was our first time there we wanted to try a bit of everything...here's what we inhaled: TNT Mussels- very tasty, not too spicy considering they were smothered in wasabi cream Negimaki- thinly sliced beef (cooked) in some sort of soy glaze. Really good, I barely got a bite since my husband was all over it! He isn't big on raw food. I tried the quail eggs, Mexican Deluxe roll and Volcano Special Roll--all REALLY delicious and fresh! Hubs tried the miso soup and ginger salad ( miso wasn't too fishy which he hates and salad was on point!) and teriyaki chicken meal (came with 4 slices cali roll, broccoli, rice, noodles and the soup and salad were included) which he really liked but said it wasn't mind blowing. Also had Ichiban and sake. All together bill was like $70 which is about $30 less than our average bill at Samurai! I think I have a new favorite sushi joint!

Looking for a nice little authentic Japanese restaurant ? Toki will certainly fit the bill. Came here for a random sushi craving with the misses and had a great time. The interior is very much like an old school Japanese restaurant, nothing flashy and dimly lit ... creates a very intimate dining experience. They had a few vases and sculptures on the side of the wall which helped to add some color to the place. We ordered two sushi rolls (Buccaneer & Mexican) both of which were very good and came with about 8 pieces each. I always love seeing how every Japanese restaurant puts together their sushi presentations so i was a little disappointed when the presentation not as eye catching as some other places i've frequented. However the taste of the rolls was spot on to what i remember how y rolls tasted at other restaurants. The gyoza we ordered came with about 7 pieces and had a good taste to it with the dumpling having a little crisp that i enjoyed. The warm saki is a staple when ever we go to a Japanese restaurant and was very good. The portion was a little on the small side for the bottle ($5.95) and only came in one size. lately i have been craving for some authentic japanese ramen and was a little disappointed to see only one ramen dish on the menu. We split an order of the Shrimp Ramen and by far the broth was VERY GOOD! This was the highlight of the meal as the broth was very flavorful and tasty. The ramen noodles were thin but good and the shrimp & veggies had a nice fresh taste and the combination with the broth melded well in the bowl. I wish we could have ordered the broth as i could prob enjoy an order a container of this to go in itself! Even though i had no idea what was being said, i actually enjoyed hearing the staff and one of the customers conversing in Japanese as to me actually added to the authenticity of the place. Our waitress & sushi chef were very nice and quickly attended to our needs. If you are craving for some soup & broth, come and order the shrimp ramen. i guarantee you will enjoy!

Nice little place. Quiet. Friendly. There was a strong fishy smell tho. The rolls were good but not amazing. I don't feel disappointed just didn't have that glory that I am use to. I would eat here again and I would order the regular Mexican roll and the Mexican Deluxe again. I would try a few different rolls.

Was not impressed at all with this place. First it took forever to get waited on, one waitress for the entire restaurant. Started with edamame, took forever to come out and when it did it was almost cold and dried out With very little salt (bland) ordered 6 different types of sushi rolls and they mediocre very average with the spicy tuna tasting overly fishy and not fresh, it was our first time there and won't be returning any time soon.

Authentic Japan owners. Exceptionally delicious every time. Chirashi is always a must for me. KingKong roll also very good. their house salad is the best in town, not too sour and vingeretty...

Quick Summary: A very nice restaurant with some good rolls, and a very nice value. As big sushi fans, we came here to enjoy sushi omakase (chef's choice). The fish was pretty good but was a little lacking in flavor. Was a bit disappointed that the sushi chef offered two rolls while we were doing omakase. The sushi was pretty standard selection; really enjoyed the mackerel with a layer of roe underneath, definitely the best of the night. After dinner the sushi chef did let us know that his latest shipment of sushi was delayed, which I guess led to the lack of variety and originality. The service was very friendly though and for omakase, the value was great! When you go omakase, which is my prefered way of getting sushi, it can be a bit of a crap shoot since you're relying on the chef's creativity, and availability. It was a little anti-climactic, and understandably so since they didn't have their lastest inventory available. Looking over the reviews, it seems the patrons are more into rolls here. But it wasn't so much that I wouldn't come back. Hopefully we'll have better luck next time with what is available, and may we'll check out the rolls if luck isn't on our side!

The wife and I love this place. Very traditional rolls with a good variety used between each one on the menu. They give you a lot of choices to vary the seafood and ingredients you can ingest while ordering rolls and at time.

After trying a few places around here, I finally found my favorite place to get sushi in Tampa..Toki! The rolls are yummy, and the sashimi was cut perfectly. Even the fish is super fresh! You can tell that the chef takes great care on how he does his rolls. Too bad it's only open for dinner :(. The rolls we got was green hornet, spider, and buchaneer. Both buchaneer and green hornet were good, but we have had a better spider roll somewhere else. It should also be noted if you order the sashimi dinner, you will get only one miso and salad, so if you come as a group, be prepared to share lol. All in all I love this place.

Best yellow tail sashimi in town! We ordered red and green angel rolls and a few others all were incredible. Sushi chef is Japanese and the owner, you get the authentic sushi here! A true hidden gem in Tampa! Must try!

Out of the few Japanese restaurants I have been to in Tampa Toki is now a favorite. I shared the green hornet roll (fresh yellowtail, avacado, and wasabi tobiko) and the sashimi dinner with my gf. I also had a salmon roe nigiri and uni nigiri. The fish is very fresh at Toki, however the salmon roe was a tad fishy but still good. One downside to the sashimi dinner was they included imitation krab... this really is not sashimi. So I hope the owners see this and not include this in the future. I know it is all about cost savings, but hook it up with some less expensive cuts... instead of friggin fish paste imitation krab.. The restaurant itself is simple and cozy. You don't need any fancy setting for some nice fresh sashimi. We will be back again to try more!

This place is really good. I love the people that work there. Their sushi is delicious! The cooked dinners have tons of flavors. We pop in there when looking for something quick. My husband orders the Japanese beer too. I always get a speciality roll. Costs more but why not eat something fabulous?

We have been coming to Toki for sushi for over 15 years. We feel this is the best sushi restaurant in all of Tampa -- at least of those we've tried, and we've tried many. Fish is ALWAYS fresh, selections excellent and staff very friendly and accommodating. Say hello to Chris Kajimoto, the owner, who prepares the sushi there every single evening.

I am so sad to write this review. After reading the glowing five star reviews, I thought I would finally stumble upon my go-to legit sushi restaurant. To my dismay, I was extremely underwhelmed. Perhaps my high expectations played a part, but I think with respect to the quality of fish, Toki is no better than Sushi Alive, Soho Sushi, and Yoko's. Of course, Toki is not as crazy fusion as Soho Sushi and Sushi Alive are, and is more legit in the sense that they do a lot more traditional combinations (finally, a place with chirashi!). But overall, there was nothing particularly impressing about the meal, and I would certainly not deem the fish ultra "fresh." So, my search continues for legit sashimi in Tampa...

One of my favorite sushi restaurants in Tampa. Their food is always fresh and consistently good. We have been dining here for years and love the waitstaff. Very clean, pleasant, and good quality food. Some of my favorites are the ahi tuna, Mexican deluxe, and volcano roll. I have never had an item I didn't like. Definitely worth trying. Don't expect a full liquor bar though. They only serve beer, wine and sake. Would be great for date night or a quiet evening. Good value for the cost and you're not paying for the name.

Tried this place for the first time the night before Christmas Eve. Was a bit hesitant that the fish wouldn't be as fresh so close to the holiday but boy was I wrong. This is exactly the type of place my wife and I enjoy because it's all about the fish. If you'd rather do without the techno music and long waits this is the place for you. Went back a few days after the holiday and it was great again. This will definitely be our new spot.

Good quality rainbow roll. Very fresh and light. The suggestions about the Red and Green Angel were pretty bad. They tasted fine, if I was in the mood for chicken nuggets. When I think sushi, I don't think McDonald's, so boo to those suggestions. They give the warm towels before eating. Feels great on the hands. Overall, pretty good. Decor is like a typical sit-down/take-out Chinese restaurant.

Damn fine sushi! Everything was great from the sunomono starter to the final piece of sushi. The scallop sushi was my favorite with its pure simplicity and super fresh scallop that just melted in my mouth. This was served with just a tiny sliver of lemon to squeeze just before devouring. The mackerel was a phenomenal piece of fish with a beautiful iridescent skin and tender flesh. The rolls we enjoyed ranged from the Key West with conch pieces strewn about, the Snow White with flaky tempura pieces topping the tasty roll. The Red Angel with perfectly fried shrimp and a Siracha mayo. The absolute best roll was the Green Angel with each flavor mixing with the next and standing on it's own at the same time. When you first bite into it you get the rice with toasted sesame seeds then you delve deeper and get the fresh tuna and finally the wasabi mayo that tops this just makes you have a foodgasm at the table. To end the evening with one last taste we asked if the sushi chef would make us a couple of spicy scallop hand rolls, they did so with no hesitation and it was the perfect end to the meal. The scallops as mentioned earlier were about as fresh as if you shucked them yourself. The pieces were substantial and delicate tossed in a nice spicy sauce that only enhanced the flavor of the scallops and not masking them in any way. I have been enjoying sushi for many years and this was an eye opening meal as far as what sushi should be. I'm afraid Toki may have ruined me for all others.

YOU MUST GO HERE. I cannot emphasize how great the value, quality, service, and taste of these sushi rolls are. Legitimate Japanese establishment. I have tried countless sushi restaurants in Tampa and none have provided the flavor and roll thickness that makes it a great deal and dining experience. Sushi Alive down the road offers their happy hour specials with TINY rolls and it's just not worth it when you can go down the road and for two more dollars you get a roll that is actually filling. These rolls are made with care and made to order. The Spicy Crunchy is delicious, the Octopus Sushi is tasty, the Red Angel (I could be confused, but it was red something) roll was a-w-e-some! If you like your sushi go here. If you're looking for eclectic americanized rolls then you should probably go elsewhere (BUT still give this place a try because it's the bomb.)

WOW!! Amazing!! I rarely give 5 stars and I just had to give this place its well deserved 5 stars. The freshest sushi I have ever had. I had a piece of Uni (the freshest I've ever had!) and a Green Angel Roll, friends had Spicy Tuna Roll and Volcano Roll. I tried a piece of each and man, oh man, it was so delicious! Place is clean and spacious, the staff is extremely nice. Place was packed when we got there for a Sunday night! Slightly expensive, but worth it!! The rolls were fairly large too... Try this place if you love sushi!!

Wow. This place is fantastic in every way. I had to come here with my girlfriend last night after checking the reviews. I had been rather unimpressed with Tampa's supposed better sushi spots in the past. This place delivered on all fronts. We went in on a Monday night, were greeted warmly, and told to sit wherever we would like. They bring out warm wet hand towels to start you off (always a plus!). There was one female server who I assume was the owner, she was very friendly and attentive throughout our meal. Behind the sushi bar were two chefs preparing the sushi...this stuff is seriously fresh, after changing one my roll orders to an Arizona Roll, I watched the chef pull out a fresh yellowtail and started carving it up for my order. We were on a budget this night so we didn't go too crazy. We started with a side salad which was just your typical iceberg lettuce but the ginger dressing was very fresh and very good. We ordered three rolls, the Spicy Tuna, Arizona, and Buccaneers Roll (Go Bucs!)...all three were fantastic. The rice was fresh and cooked perfectly. The fish and other ingredients were as fresh as it gets and they all melted in your mouth. The Buccaneers roll was the star of the show...I'm not usually a big fan of salmon rolls but this must have been some seriously fresh salmon because it was fantastic. I also got a piece of Escolar sushi which like everything else was melt-in-your-mouth good. The ginger and wasabi were authentic and the best tasting I have ever had (I finished all of the ginger and most of the wasabi). The eel sauce (my girlfriend loves the stuff) was also very good. We ended up getting out of there for $30 between three rolls, one piece of sushi, a side salad, and a few cokes. All in all this place is as good as it gets. I really can't wait to go back and try everything. It's that good.

I love Toki - every time I come home to Tampa, I try to have dinner here. In a market where sushi restaurants try to be flashy with new rolls that they serve (Sriracha sauce and sushi do not go well together in my opinion), Toki seems to pride itself with mastering the basics. The fish is always fresh, and the traditional nigirizushi showcases the natural flavors very well. The restaurant itself creates a peaceful environment where people can enjoy their dinner without having to shout at each other just to be heard. Toki was great when it first opened decades ago, and it's still great now. I highly recommend it!

Me and the hubby's favorite sushi place in Tampa. Always friendly and the sushi can't be beat. It's so fresh and delicious. It's a simple restaurant but the food is sooo good you must try. My husband gets the Tempura and that's great too! Definitely try this place!

Went on a monday night around 6pm, the place was quiet, better for a date night. I had a Florida roll, it was fresh and I really enjoyed it, the citrus touch was new and I really enjoyed it. Will definitely have to go back and order other rolls.

I'm not sure why, but the entire restaurant smells like really, really bad body odor. I guess you sort of get used to it once you are in there, but it's REALLY noticeable. Not sure if its someone that works there, or something old that is in there, but its kind of distracting and gross. Aside from that, the food was AMAZING. We had pork dumplings which were delicious, two different rolls and green tea ice cream. I have no complaint with the food or service - both were excellent. My only complaint would be the smell in the restaurant. If you can get passed that or stuff like that does not bother you, then this is a definite place to try. The sushi is phenomenal!

I don't know what's inspiring some people to such Toki-enthusiasm, but it's a genuine 5 or 6 on a 10-point. Comparing Toki to the majority of Tampa sushi which I've been to, it just didn't stand out. The inside is pretty plain, stainproof carpet and teal composite table with unforgiving chairs. The sushi rolls are your standard combinations with good ingredients. No Instagram-worthy displays, but that's forgivable because it tastes pretty good. The sashimi is actually a weak point here. Tried everything but the omelet and the krabstick on one visit or another. Most of it was fresh and the portions were reasonable, but I've had the same items at other places that've trumped in terms of freshness, technique, and display. The sea urchin was a real disappointment. I order it at every place, and Toki's has been the worst sea urchin of any place that didn't come back and apologetically say they were out. The octopus and squid were also brutally tough, maybe because they had been frozen prior or maybe because the chef did nothing to tenderize it. When I order dishes a la carte, they're equally unimpressive. It's definitely worth something that I'll eat ANYTHING on the menu because none of it is offensive, but it all just feels perfunctory. The only reason I feel bad writing this review is because the staff has never been anything but courteous and friendly, making conversation and no goofed orders in maybe 8 visits. People who think they like this place should try Tomo on Bearss and Florida - Same charm, but +1.

  • Tony Y.

I had to drop this down a star based on a recent visit. The sushi rolls were subpar and not up to modern flavoring. I don't mind a smaller portion as long as the flavor and quality can back it up. In this instance, I was rather disappointed by their rolls. Maybe I am used to more of the new age sushi rolls w/ the exotic combination and flavoring.

Toki is a simple Japanese restaurant located in the middle of Carrollwood. I was looking for a nice low key, but quality, meal with my girlfriend on a Friday night without having to drive more than a mile from where I lived. I'm a fan of sushi and have made it a mission to find out the best sushi spots in Tampa. I saw the positive reviews on Yelp and decided I needed to try this place out. From the moment you walk into this place, you notice the simple elegance and traditional simplicity of the setup. There was a single sushi chef accompanied by an assistant. Ever since I saw the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, I have been paying special attention to the care and focus that the sushi chef puts into his work. The chef here, you could tell admired the work that he did. As much as I love sushi, I didn't go with the nigiri or sashimi. Instead, my girlfriend and I went with three traditional rolls and one specialty roll. The fish was fresh and the rolls tasted fantastic. The only comment that I have for the chef is that a few of the rolls were heavy on the rice for my taste. My personal opinion is that rice should be kept to a minimum on rolls. I'm really picky with my sushi and will not frequent places more than once. This place is now going to be one of my go to's in Tampa. If you're in the area, you can't go wrong with Toki.

This place was delicious! I loved the quiet hush hush atmosphere, it was definitly different compared to a majority of restaurants I've been to. The entrance is tucked away, hidden by curtains that you almost walk right by it if not for their neon open sign. There are about 10 tables at the most, so it has a really private feel, almost like you found some secret lair that requires VIP. They have allot of variety for not a large menu. Both Sashimi and Sushi available, and they have a fair mixture of flash fried style sushi and uncooked.

Sunday night. Only people there. (Bad sign?) Four inexpensive rolls - Tobi (salmon), Florida (Tuna), veg, and Tampa (Fried white fish, for the non-raw fan). Sorry to say, Tampa was bad - looked ok, but tasted like over fried potatoes left out overnight. (Irony?) Fortunately, the other rolls were good. Fresh and tasty. And, the waitress and chef seemed nice. Overall - ok. Kaisen is just up the street and getting good reviews. .. trying that next time.

Good, authentic Japanese food (I'm Japanese, so I like to think that I know the difference). A bit pricey, but worth it for the fresh sushi. The chirashi is recommended for people who want variety of sashimi and rice, good value for the price. Comes with miso soup and ginger dressing salad. The venue is a bit small, so I imagine this place fills up quickly on busy nights. The venue is not fancy by any means, the decor actually has quite a lot to be desired, in my opinion. The last time I went, there was only one waiter, so I saw some people waiting for a while, but she was nice and punctual. Recommended for people craving authentic Japanese sushi.

After reading the Yelp reviews, I had to try Toki. This sushi spot lived up to its ratings. It was only 30 minutes 'til closing time but the chef and server were kind enough to make our rolls to go and gave us miso soup while we waited. We had the Green Hornet and Spicy Crunch Tuna Roll. Both were fresh and did not stinge on the fish. Amazing flavor and tightly rolled, just how we like it! Can't wait to go again and dine inside.

This is some of THE best sushi I've had in Tampa, the prices are very reasonable, and it's right in our neck of the woods! Fish and seafood are the stars here and it is all super fresh. We started with the shrimp tempura appetizer. It include two fresh, sweet shrimp in wonderfully light batter and some fresh veggies. Tempura can easily be greasy or too heavy but this was absolute perfection! For our sushi selection, we tried to stick with some simpler rolls, as these are usually a very good measure of the chef's skill and the freshness of the fish. The Bagel roll is one of our standard orders - smoked salmon, cream cheese and scallion. The smoked salmon pieces were huge and the salmon itself was outstanding. We also sampled the Florida roll - tuna, cucumber, scallion, mayo with citrus tobiko on the outside of the roll. The tuna was also a huge portion and very fresh. The veg inclusions were a nice balance to the richness of the fish, but we couldn't taste/didn't notice the citrus tobiko at all. Rounding out the simpler rolls, we did the Key West roll - spicy conch, avocado, roe, scallion and cucumber. This was our least favorite - mostly because we suddenly remembered why we prefer conch in fritter form only. The conch was good, though not at all spicy, but like all conch - there were very chewy spots. Eh, not quite our thing but worth a shot. The only "premium roll" we got was the Snow White - house made slightly spicy crab salad (yes, crab with a 'C'), avacado and tempura tips on top. The crab salad was so outstanding, we ended up scraping the tempura crunchies off the top of most of the rolls as the bread taste only distracted from the sweet, just-enough-spicy crab. This was outstanding and we are thinking of asking for a custom roll of just the 'crab special' and cucumber on our next visit. Great, quiet atmosphere, good service and an easy to find location. Toki made our tummies very happy and we spent the whole drive home plotting when we can next return. My absolute #1 pick for sushi in Tampa!

Went here with a friend after seeing all the fabulous reviews. We were a little disappointed, as Toki was decent but not particularly fabulous. The takoyaki we had were undercooked inside, and the sushi didn't seem that remarkable. The only thing that we noted was that the sushi rolls were stuffed to the brim with filling. Flavor-wise, I wouldn't say that added much to them.

I would agree this is by far the best sushi restaurant in Tampa. The chefs prepare very fresh sashimi, and it is presented perfectly. Not a lot of the ridiculous westernized options topped with five different sauces and bacon. They really are concerned about quality and preparation! HOWEVER, BEYOND THEIR CONTROL IS THE KICK BOXING PLACE THAT OPENED UP NEXT DOOR. They are so loud, it makes it difficult to really enjoy a nice evening at Toki. All I can hear now is "1....2.....3!" "1....2....3!" "Ahhhh!" while I eat. I feel pretty bad for the restaurant now. They try so hard and to be messed up by fueled up kickboxers kinda sucks.
