Taco Tuesday is the best deal!!!!!!!!!

Superb Tex-Mex / American Mexican restaurant. Really fresh, quality ingredients and good prices. Their hot sauce bar is a winner. It's fun to try a bunch of different sauces in the little paper "thimble" cups. I love spicy food, so if I stick with the "Death Wish" sauces, I can really spice it up to the point of burning lips and tears in my eyes. Yum!

Tijuana is delicious! I love the blackened chicken tacos and their salsa bar is awesome!

We catered last week for about 15 people. The food was fantastic. Staff was super helpful and friendly. More then enough food- we even had leftovers. It all came in a super cool Tijuana Flats kooler bag that we were able to keep. *** I will also note that Tijuana Flats so graciously donated the lunch to our nonprofit organization. I would highly recommend this place as it was not only delicious but it is also clear that the owners and staff have great hearts.

Food: The food isn't bad. If you like quick tex-mex-ish food, this is the place to go. The portions are decent and there is a large variety of hot sauces available. If I was just rating based on the sauces, I would give this place 5 stars. However, I have had a hit-and-miss type of experience pertaining to the actual meals. Some days, the food is absolutely delicious and sometimes, the meat I order can be a little dry (chicken, usually). Again, hot sauce can fix that but I don't like to drown my food too much. Vibe: Honestly, this depends on when you go. I've come here when it was almost empty and there was no wait. I've also come when it was packed wall-to-wall and seating is impossible. There is outdoor seating available but on some days, even this space is packed. Timing is key. Also, two words: Taco Tuesday. Be warned, this place gets packed at around 12 pm on this day so if you want to avoid the wait, I suggest you come earlier. I recommend soft flour tacos with the blackened chicken. They also have wheat tacos if you are on a bit of a "health kick."

Great price!! We love coming. Food is good and quick. Love the happy hour prices and the blackened chicken nachos.

Great tacos!! But don't get near it on Tuesday! Every college kid in the world goes on Tuesday! Service is great food is epic! Please bring back black olives! Other than needed more seating it's a great lunch spot! Yay!!!! black olives!!!!

Out of control nice servers--thanks to Marisa and others! Food was excellent--and super reasonably priced too! Great guac, great tortilla chips, great chimichanga and burrito. Sangria was not the best--but I had two! Still really good! Will have to return!

Taco Tuesday... Hurray for that! 5.95 for two tacos and chips with salsa and a drink! Hell yes! There throwback Thursday is also excellent. Burritos with chips salsa and a drink! I also get my burrito WET.. With queso! They have good beers and a bad ass sauce bar... "Smack my sweet ass and call me sally" is the house favorite. Its DELICIOUS! Great prices. Great food and a cool startup story about local business in central Florida!

Great place to grab lunch after work, and the staff are always really friendly. I'm always about their burritos and tostadas.

Not a burrito to brag about. A plain wrap around a bit of meat. Pricey for sure. The sauces that they supposedly specialize in where nothing to write home about. +++++++++++ I received a $10.00 credit and will submit my review once I've revisited the facility. +++++++++++ Today I revisited the Restaurant (2/21/15). I ordered the Atom Bombers. Excellent. They were so fresh, a light crunch from the ingredients but soft from the torilla. Came with sour cream and a sweet, garlic, hot sauce. Very Good. I also ordered a beef and chicken taco. One & 1/2 the size of a regular taco and good. I tried several of the hot sauces: garlic, jalapeno, georgia peach, habanero and a sweet/hot. Total thumbs up!

This place was exceptionally adequate. The food was good enough quality for the price but I found it rather disappointing in the taste department. The hot sauce bar was good, but unfortunately, necessary to add flavor to the food. The atmosphere is fun, and the music playing was considerably better than the standard chain restaurant soundtrack. The staff was quite friendly and was on point with the service. I went there for lunch, and could see this as a decent spot to hit around 2:00am after a night out. All in all I probably won't return, but that is more because I'm only in town a short time. I would try it again if I were here for a longer stay.

I've eaten here a few times. I think what I appreciate most are the many sauces that are on the shelf. The food itself wasn't that memorable, but I feel like it is fine for when I need a Mexican food fix. I generally prefer Taco Bus or Taco Son though.

This place is decent but not great. However, the place is fast, and the staff is friendly. I love that they offer people who are waiting on their order a free drink. I showed up for a casual lunch. They saw me lurking in the doorway and gestured for me to come up, offered me a menu, and told me not to rush to order. That was awesome. I had the carnitas norrito bowl (basically a naked burrito if you're at Qdoba or Chipotle). I really like that guacamole comes standard with it. The pork was okay, and overall everything was fine. Playing around with hot sauces from the hot sauce bar helped. The black beans were mushy, so everything sort of felt like the same texture. :/ The servers deliver the food to you, and they circulate around the room offering drink refills. That is nice. However, as the food falls short of Qdoba or Chipotle, I think I'll trade in the service for better food quality if I'm just eating a fast lunch.

I don't have the "Mexi-Can" badge for nothing. I'm a big visitor of all these quick Mexican restaurants. And I like them all for different reasons. Why I like Tijuana Flat's: Their queso is different and flavorful. The seasoning on the chips is delicious. I can get tacos on crispy corn tortillas. Also a plus, when the line is long, the servers come down the line and bring you a drink while you're waiting. That's a nice touch.

Worst food I tried, and annoying music and decor were disturbing while eating bad quality food+ it feels like the food is really old

With plenty of quick service Mexican options, favorites are just a matter of personal preference. I am a big fan of nachos and tacos with an occasional craving for a quesadilla. I am a big fan of Tijunana Flats beef tacos - well seasoned meat, perfect balance of toppings and a hearty portion size. I usually add chips and queso to my order and like the slight spice of their queso. This location is often busy - lots of college kids - on my visits, but the service has always been great and on a recent visit, the cashier recommended a differed option that would save me some cash but get me the items I was super hungry for. Love that!

  • Kimberly B.

I love this place. Every time I eat here the food is always fresh & made to order. The wait for food isn't long either.

Nothing special about the food...service is decent but deteriorates during busy hours. You're better off going to Chipotle if you're looking for quick Mexican food.

I love coming here for Taco Tuesdays! Avoid coming here during the hours of 12-1 as the lines are longer

I do love The "Flats". It is unique, fast and delicious. Although, there is nothing extremely unique and mind blowing about the establishment that I feel compelled to share with my fellow Yelpers, there are some things I love about it. I wen for lunch yesterday and I was excited to see that TF was yet another business establishment that was on board with the fight against breast cancer. They did this in a very cool way. The two hard tacos I ordered, for an extra dollar per taco, I could get them in a pink shell to support the cause. I thought this was creative. The food here is great! If you are on a quick 30 min lunch break and need to pick something up, or after a long day at work and you want some tacos and beer! The prices are very reasonable for the portions you receive. Their queso is some of the best I've ever had! They have a salsa bar that provides you with a sundry of mild to extremely spicy condimental options. Now, I do appreciate the level of service the staff provides here in the sense that they are always asking to refill your drink. The downside to this is they are ALWAYS asking. I couldn't get within two bites of my meal before another server would come and ask if I was doing ok. I appreciate this thouroughness, but maybe a rotation plan should be explored so that the consumer doesnt feel overwhelemed with service. I like the Flats and it is deffinetelty something you need to try

This was the first Mexican place I went for food after moving to tampa. It was my first time at a Tijuana flats and it was a good experience. You are asked if you want something to drink while you are still In line to order which is nice. You order then go sit down and they bring your food/drink right out to you. Good prices for both food and drinks, including beet pitcher specials. I am a big fan of their queso and chips!

    (4)
  • Brian C.

A good place to grab a quick burrito. I do like their hot sauce bar. While I do prefer heartier, more authentic Mexican places, Tijuana Flats certainly does the job.

  • Jay R.

Love this place. Especially for taco Tuesday. Great service, food, and prices. Dont miss out on the cookie dough floutas they are like $3 and probably the best dessert I've ever had.

    (5)
  • Joel H.

I much prefer other Mexican places to Tijuana Flats but my wife loves the nachos. When I go I usually order a burrito. I'm not a fan of the tortilla they use or their salsa. I do love the hot sauce bar they offer. Still, I have enough friends that like Tijuana Flats that I will probably continue coming here forever.

    (3)
  • Vanessa C.

I don't see why anyone would not give this place 5 stars. The atmosphere is amazing, they have beer pitchers, and the food is amazing. The food comes out fast and my order is always right. The staff comes around all the time to ask if you need anything or if you need a refill. Every taco Tuesday the line is out the door because it's such a good deal. They only thing is I wish they could make the place bigger.

    (5)
  • Luxxa Q.

Tijuana Flats is generally quite good and no matter which location I've been to, I'd pretty much give them the same review. Reliable. Fairly fast. Relaxed atmosphere. Good food. Good hot sauces. Great for when your looking for something more upscale than usual fast food, but not as fancy or expensive as a sit-down dinner.

    (4)
  • Britt M.

This is the first place I've ever been able to find a vegetarian chimichanga, which warmed my heart. I don't know if I would consider it a chimichanga, but it was good. I love the hot sauces here. I could eat their chips and salsa with hot sauce all day, though the tortilla chips are pretty salty. Everything I tried here was delicious. They also get a thumbs up for having pellet ice in their drinks. I love chewing on ice, and with pellet ice it doesn't hurt your teeth. It was a little pricey than I was expecting, but not by much. I guess I was thinking it would be in the price range of Moe's. It wasn't expensive, and I think it was worth the little bit more money. I will definitely go back. I love that they have so many meatless options. I'm sick of eating the same stuff. It gets really frustrating. Here, I could try a bunch of different things on the menu, which is a definite and obvious plus.

Always ask for a USF discount. (But have your ID ready just in case.) Always ask for the $1 Shock Top when it's available. (But have your ID ready just in case.) And always bring a pen. You're going to want to try lots of hot sauces, and you're bound to forget which one is which. So before you fill the little paper sauce cup (BEFORE! Damn it, BEFORE! Those were my good jeans!), write a little reminder like "SMA2" for "Smack My Ass And Call Me Sally: The Second Smacking". Their tortilla chips always look so good. I wish they could fry me up some flour tortillas, because I can't eat corn. But that's my only regret here.

    (4)
  • Steve B.

Super friendly and helpful staff. Varied menu and super cheap prices. Chips and salsa were great and enjoyed the extensive hot sauce selections on the side. Buritto and chimichanga were just ok. Same for the sides but still good value.

  • Hillary R.

I've read some of the bad reviews about the mahi tacos and I was quite surprised because I am addicted to them and I have traveled to many different places where if they have fish tacos ill usually get it and these can definitely hold their own when it comes to a coastal upscale spot

    (5)
  • Marissa S.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door. I ordered two tacos with no tomatoes and a side of queso to go. It took longer than I would have expected considering only one person was in front of me. When I got home the queso has spilled all over my tacos, which I can only infer was because the lid was not put on properly. The tacos were good, skimpy on the meat and sour cream though.

Tijuana Flats was pretty good. I really liked their selection of hot sauces, however the descriptions of each is kinda lacking at least at the location I went to. I've only ever been to this one so I don't have any to compare it to. The burrito was pretty good. Not quite mexican style, but close. The chips were also pretty good. I don't know that I would go back to this location unless for some reason I was stuck in the area again (like staying across the street at the clarion), but I would definitely go to another in the chain. Seems like a good place to go and grab a beer and a burrito just about any day of the week.

  • Carlos H.

I don't know what happened, I used to be a huge Tijuana Flats fan and then when I returned after some years of absence with some friends for lunch from school and had a burrito with some tortilla chips, the burrito tasted dry and not balanced enough and the chips needed lots of seasoning and dip and even then were not really that great. Perhaps Moe's Southwestern Grill has officially won me over, but TJ Flats just ain't what it used to be to me.

  • Christina G.

DON'T GET THE FISH TACOS!!! I made the mistake of trying them and boy were they fishy. I have never sent food back but they were awful. Sooooo when I did send them back and asked for something else I got a nasty attitiude from the manager. I will not be going back to this Tijuana Flats. Pros: The regular staff was friendly and helpful. The chicken tacos, I got instead of the fish, were great. Cons:The manager is a jerk.

  • Tim M.

I freakin' love this place. Being a USF student, I've been coming here for a couple of years now, and there's a reason I keep coming back. Food is fantastic, the atmosphere is great, staff is friendly, and you get 10% off for being a student. What's not to like? My regular is a chicken chimichanga. What's the difference between that and a burrito? Heck if I know (no beans/rice maybe?), but it's absolutely delicious. I also pour some hot sauce (Smack My Sweet Ass and Call Me Sally... Yeah, I like the sweet sauces, don't hate) on it and it makes it that much better. Like hot sauce? There's like 15 different flavors at various degrees of spice that they offer. Tijuana Flats will not dissapoint!

This is my favorite favorite lunch spot. Cheap, fresh, delicious, friendly service, an ever changing hot sauce bar- nothing but good things to say about this place (particularly this near-USF location). It's packed on Tuesdays for Taco Tuesdaze (2 tacos, chips & a drink for $4.99) but it's the best deal in town so it's worth the long line! Visit once and you'll be a huge fan just like me!

    (5)
  • Tommy B.

This Tijuana Flats is nice. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff is friendly. The designs inside is creative and they have many different options. They also have a hot sauce table with a big variety of sauces. The best thing about it is that they have a USF discount on Tuesdays. This brings in a big crowd, so if you want to find a seat you will want to get there early.

I'd never been to Tijuana Flats til we came to this one on our weekend vacation to Busch Gardens. This was located a few blocks away from out hotel and we're always in the mood for some Mexican cuisine! The menu was a bit confusing at first, but once we figured out what we wanted, I order 2 enchiladas (1 beef & 1 chicken) and my boyfriend order flautas (chicken). My enchiladas were great! Everything tasted fresh and it wasn't too much food, it was just enough. My bf's flautas were excellent also! We gotta say, next time we come back to Tampa, this is our dinner spot.

  • Ben V.

Wife and I enjoyed this TF more than the one near our dwelling in Wesley Chapel. The burritos were good and packed with tasty flavor enhancers. The staff was also real nice considering it was late on Sunday night.

    (4)
  • Ren J.

The staff here is absolutely amazing and friendly, and although I've found that most TJ Flats locations' food quality doesn't deviate, this is probably the best location I've visited. Although it's usually packed because it's right next to a university, the staff is still very personable. Even if it's busy, your questions will be answered; when asked about the Death Pack sauces, the manager talked up my boyfriend and me about the Ghost Sauce that was currently featured at the hot sauce bar.

    (5)
  • Ernest S.

I am a sucker for Mexican food anyway. TF is on par with the other counter service chains out there. The atmosphere is definitely for a younger crowd. The food is good, the prices are good and the service aims to please. I love the hot sauce bar. What's not to like?

    (4)
  • Daniella S.

I like that TJ flats doesn't pretend to be a Mexican restaurant. This makes me like it more than I would other wise. The burritos are great, full of stuff, you can get it made "power lite" with low fat cheese and sour cream if you are rolly polly like me and watch what you eat. I like the atmosphere and you can grab a beer between classes? Sounds good to me. You need a beer to get through some of my classes.

    (4)
  • Thomas W.

My great uncle Eloi Quintana is right when he says the best Mexican food is found in the state of New Mexico. You rarely find real enchiladas, sopapillas, or postole except out West. So when this place was recommended to me I was very skeptical. I read many reviews before I came here. I never like to hear some place called Tex-Mex! My tacos were very good, and I enjoyed the chips, queso, and the hot bar of various sauces. Don't waste your time making your dish a meal with refried beans and rice--skip it! The decor is very funky, and the young staff give the place a hip atmosphere. However, when I asked two of the staff members for something they completely forgot. Luckily one of the waitresses was very helpful and took care of me. Be careful of the nuclear hot sauces as they are truly nuclear. I did enjoy my meal here, and the prices give you a very good value. It is almost like a very local version of California Tortilla.

    (3)
  • Maria G.

Had the steak tacos on wheat tortillas. This was an interesting experience. First, coming from Cali, i am used to the mexican status taco.. this was more a white washed version of tacos... kinda like a chain. I did like the selection of salsa sauces. Its a small and busy establishment for quick bite to eat..

    (3)
  • Nienna N.

Not bad for fast food First off this is a counter service place and the general atmosphere reflects that. If you're out to grab a quick bite it's a great stop but don't take your best girl there to impress her.

    (3)
  • Rob F.

Tasted better in the past, or maybe I just got over it. Normally friendly staff, but drink refills are few and far between on a busy / short staffed day. Definitely have issues with the food that I wish I didnt. The entire chain needs a food quality upgrade, as Chipotle easily bests the quality of meats and products. You are paying more for attitude here then quality product.

  • william d.

Crazy cool decor, if your under 30 which I still am holding on to. Food was pretty good as well but wish I got a little more for the price. Hot sauce bar rocks, and beer is always a bonus. The only down side is that the menu is very very extensive and if you haven't been here before you get a little lost, but the guy at the counter was very nice and helpful. Thank god they weren't too busy cause I was like a deer in headlights. I think it's a solid 3 1/2 but I just couldn't bring myself to 4, sorry TJ.

  • Carolyn E.

Better than Moe's, Tijuana Flats blasts it's air conditioning and feeds you well. (... and then there's the pretty sweet drink specials)

  • Nicole G.

If you're looking for good, filling, relatively cheap eats, look no further. Great burritos, flautas, quesadillas and more. I really enjoy their sauce bar.

  • B B.

Great Food!!! Great atmosphere! Nice staff and great hot sauces. Watch out for one called Endorphin Rush, it is excrusiatingly painful if you can not tolerate spicy food. Dont' trick friends with it either...I saw a man who must of thought it would be fun to give it to his female friend...it wasn't pretty. The food is awesome though.

    (5)
  • Jes L.

This is a staple for every University student. The prices are okay -- not great, but the food is to die for. Great burritos, quesadillas, rice bowls, etc. They sell beer, margaritas, and occasionally sangria slushies. I think I spent more money eating here then I did for tuition for four years at USF. I cannot recommend it enough.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
