Not a dive at all, but also not in contention for upscale panache. A basic bar in stumbing/crawling distance of University of Tampa. Prices are low and air is smoky. Designed for serious drinking and lounging without frills.

This bar is kinda cool. Cheap drinks and they got pool tables and games. Although the service is bad i like it

Walked here from Mise en place, great place by the way, for some after dinner drinks and instantly regretted it. The atmosphere here seemed fairly chilled and it looked like a great way to end the night. Unfortunately looks can be deceiving. The drinks we ordered here were barely alcoholic. I asked for a Johnny Vegas and felt like I got a cup of kool-aid instead. After the disapointing drinks, we decided to play a round of pool which was fun while it lasted. I decided to break off and play some darts while the rest of the group played pool and that was where my night came to halt. A guy on the board next to me was clearly drunk and man handling the darts, shooting them off with excessive enough force to make them bounce off. I did little but aproach the board when the bouncer walked up to me and proceeded to tell me, "you need to stop tossing those darts like a jackass" I tried to explain the situation but he was not having any of it and got quite mouthy which just aggravated me and caused me to start arguing. Needless to say, the whole thing could have been avoided with the proper aproach. My night ended right then and there and soured me on the place as a whole.

Great bar on the divey side. Drinks are cheap and atmosphere is chill for happy hour.

Went out with a large group of friends and was treated poorly by the manager that night. Couldn't even step through the door and had to retreat. Doesn't even deserve one star. Next.

This is pretty much a college bar. Upon walking in, I realized I hadn't been to a bar like this in a long time. One room has the bar and the other room is wide open and lined with couches. We ended up playing a game of beer pong. Why? Because they have a beer pong table. Over all, this is a good spot if you don't mind smoke. I have quite a headache this morning just because I'm not used to going to smoky bars. Very laid back vibe here and the beer is CHEAP. 5.50 for 2 beers!? Yes please.

I have been going to this bar since my college years and its only gotten better. Jeremy is an outstanding manager, professional, fun and welcoming. This bar has a very relaxed atmosphere, and depending on what time of the day you go, you'll find all sorts of awesome crowds. It is one of the few bars left around here that have indoor smoking, but there is outside seating option as well. Overall, this is not a typical "college bar". Almost all nights are 21+, the music is well rounded, the bar tenders are mature and professional. In fact, the only thing that makes this place "college friendly" are their amazing drink specials and the option to play fun college games. And... that its right across from UT. But seriously, who doesn't like drink specials and some entertainment!! ;)

Reeked of smoke, what happened to no smoking where food is served in Tampa? The bouncer bent my id and let me in with an obvious attitude on his face. Chose to leave by choice, at age 25 I don't feel I need to be given such a hard time. I would like to speak to management about him damaging an id and the reasons for it and about them replacing it. Will never go back here

Set the scene, Friday night, i'm visiting from abroad UK, my 6th time to tampa, and recommended to have drinks here, so we drove specifically to this place- a mixed group of 11 in our party. Arrived to this bar and it was dead, 4 already had drinks and the rest of us had I.D's checked. I showed my UK drivers license which is a valid form of ID and was refused entry!!!! Because it's invalid and a passport is needed. I'm 33 not a kid and i'm not faking my British accent, I think it's appalling that a passport is needed - ur on vacation like anyone would bring their passport out. I asked to speak to the manager, she completely dismissed us and I was treated in such a manner that left us disgusted and disappointed. I own restaurants back home and have worked in this industry for 18 yrs and never have I felt so strong to add a poor review. It was the dismissive attitude she had and they actually waited outside for us to leave.. It is under the discretion of the management to serve us, if I was asked for ID from the police my license would be valid. The rest of our party ranged from ages 23-29 so it's not like we were little kids going for out first drink, the place was not busy at all, but clearly she did not want our business. Not to worry we took our business elsewhere and ran up a $500 tab in two hours.. Go to "the Retreat" to get mistreated, or better still just save ur gas. (Thanks yelp for making me give them a 1star- they don't even deserve that)

Been going to the Retreat for almost ten years. It's a great college/dive bar. The beer and drink selection is pretty good and always changing. The staff is friendly and competent. Sink or swim on Thursdays can be off the chain. I've had birthdays, Superbowl party's and even thanksgiving party's here.

We went on a Wednesday night, its right across from university of Tampa, so there's is going to be a younger crowd. I aboslutely loved the place, it was very chill and they played great music. Its a place to go when you just want to chill with friends at a bar. They had $10 all you can drink and $8 pitchers, like I said this was on a Wednesday so I'm not sure if its the same on all the other days. I would definitely recommend this bar to a younger crowd, you can smoke inside for those who smoke and there bar is big enough plenty to sit and drink a beer or two.

The Retreat is an occasional stop that makes for a good happy hour meeting place. It's got the relaxed atmosphere of a neighborhood bar early on. It's also a college bar so depending on when you go the vibe can be different. The bar allows smoking and serves no food but you can order from the place next door.

Great place to hang out. Relaxed atmosphere reasonably priced. Smokers welcome. They don,t have a kitchen but a great place right next door that has a great menu and will bring the food right to you so you can eat at the bar.

If you havent been in a while you are missing out. More space. More pool tables. Good mix of new bartenders and old favorites. The specials have been changed, and a certain promotion company is no longer involved on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ehhh. Limited beer selection adheres to inexperienced palates. Your usual Stella, Magic hat, etc. Average. Liquor selection is better but it is a rarity when bars don't offer one. Plenty of seating at the bar, a couple high tops surrounding it. There is a room on the other side with two pool tables and a dart board along with two booths. Tampa staple to be fair, around since 1938. Holds Guinness World record for most draft beers ever sold. Decorations aren't half bad but nothing outstanding. Bar allows you to smoke inside - noted.

This is your kind of bar if.....you smoke or don't mind people smoking inside right next to you. Prices and atmosphere are ok....but this is not the bar for me would not return.

Great dive bar right in downtown Tampa. The bar is right around the corner from the Oxford Exchange so it is easy to find. Draft beers are 2 dollars up till 9 o'clock they also have other drink specials after that. The bar is claimed as the oldest bar in Tampa so that is really cool. Will most definitely be going back for cold beers and good times.

At last! We found it! Our Holy Grail, a cheap, borderline divish (but not total dive) with cheap beer, great specials, and good bartenders! The bar is very comfortable (I hate bars without foot rails!!) because I managed to sit there for almost 4 hours on our first visit. You can't beat $2 domestic drafts. Is this a snooty, craft ale bar? Nope, it's not. But we have plenty of those around here. This is a bar to drink cheap and sing along with the juke box. And I love it for being just that!

Fun, laid back place to hang out with friends. Despite it's close proximity to UT, it's not crawling with college students, which I appreciate. Stop by, have a few beers, and play pool and darts. Nice low-key place to get together for a casual evening.

Good location near UT. Each night they have a different drink special which is good. Regular drink prices are decent also.

Alright bar, been around forever. Locals/U Tampa hangout. Prices could come down a bit thought, can rack up hell of a tab in a hurry.

The Retreat was a wonderful venue. It has a vintage feeling, but still maintains a trendy, modern vibe. Bar tender was friendly and attentive. Wasn't too crowded for a Saturday night which made enjoying conversation & drinks with friends easy. Only negative is that smoking is allowed inside.
