Thai restaurant that serves no sticky rice? That's a first. Wow. Fail.

Favorite place for Thai beef noodle soup, it's delicious.

If not for Groupon, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know this place existed. Though I am glad I tried it out. First off, the atmosphere of this place is pretty neat. Loved the decor. We started off with the Rouen Thai Sampler. Filled with 2 of each: Egg Roll, Thai Spring Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Fried Wonton & Crab Rangoon. All was good, but our personal favorites (and suggestions for single appetizers) would definitely be getting the Spring Rolls & Fried Wontons. For the main meal, I ordered the Chicken Garlic and Black Pepper Entree. It wasn't out of this world, but it was pretty good. Would probably get something with a little more flavor next time. The boyfriend ordered Chicken Pad Thai. I tried some, and honestly wish I had ordered it instead- best I've had in the area. Though be prepared when choosing your spicy level. I was thankful my meal was medium, because the Pad Thai was ordered hot and after two bites my nose was instantly running. Will definitely be returning to try more menu options.

This is a 2nd great Thai place in South Tampa. Close and convenient. I enjoy the meat egg rolls (they are really spring rolls, but they call them egg rolls here and their spring rolls are something else). I like the Two Friends Panang with carrots and zucchini which gives it something a little different. The cashew chicken is also good and at the top for a simple dish (which can also be easily found in many chinese restaurants, but this is just better). I do not care for their tum kha gai, the consistency and texture of the soup just doesn't keep. Eaten in a few times, it's dark but interestingly decorated with authentic Thai flair. Take out is great here too!

We have been eating in and taking out from Rouen Thai for years as we love nearby and have never been disappointed. My wife loves the Tofu or Shrimp Pad Thai and I always get the Crispy Duck with green curry sauce. We always get an order of vegetable fried rice. All are enough for two meals. Service is always good and everyone is very nice.We highly recommend Rouen Thai.

The food here tastes good and we've had nice experiences dining in. But after ordering takeout several times I just can't say anything positive about this business. Every single time we've ordered the portions are MUCH smaller than what you receive while dining in. I brought it to their attention before making my last order and they said they would make sure the portions were dinner size. Sure enough when I got home I found out they didn't follow through.
(1)Chris E.
Under new ownership from what I can tell and portions are smaller and preparations not done as well or as authentically as previously. Service was strange and a little awkward. Head to Jasmine Thai on Westshore instead.
(2)John C.
It's okay. Met a client here for lunch. I ordered mine medium hot and there was no dicernable heat to the dish. Another at our table ordered hot and had the same to say.

I was feeling lazy... did not want to cook a meal or sit inside a restaurant, so I called Rouen for take-away Thai food. Since it was my first experience with Rouen, I went with a safe bet - Tofu Pad Thai and Chicken Satay. The Satay had a subtly sweet, unfamiliar flavor which was okay but not what I expected. The peanut sauce was thicker than normal, but tasty. The Pad Thai noodles were not as sticky as I am accustomed to. The sauce also had a unique flavor that I had not experienced at traditional Thai houses (in DC, Austin, and Chicago, for example). Perhaps this is intentional with Rouen - something citrus or fruity in the mix?? I simply wasn't prepared for the distinct flavors and was craving very traditional notes. Rouen is an easy drive from my location, so I will be back and opt to sit inside based on other positive reviews... and try some curry!!
(2)Joe C.
Not recommended. Tried it 3 times and they struck out. Even the PAD Thai tasted pre made... and not fresh. This is the only Thai place in town where I don't clear the plate cuz it's just not that good. They really need to work on the quality and taste of the food they are offering.
(2)Christina A.
Best Thai restaurant i have found in the tampa area! Atmosphere is amazing, delicious food and great wait staff!
(5)Mathew R.
This place is expensive and the food is not cooked at a professional level for a typical Thai food restaurant. It is bland and you have to tell the waitress to clear your plates and get a refill. I noticed a couple reviewers rested it higher but don't believe them they obviously don't know what good Thai food tastes like.
(2)Adam P.
It is located at a pretty isolated location on Gandy. Doesn't look like it has a lot of customers as you drive past. Most of the time I don't like to try out restaurants when there isn't a lot of car in the parking lot, it is just indications that it may not be good but I was wrong. This is one of the place that has one of the best pad thai in town. Everything else taste good too. The service could be improved but the food is one of the best in town. I would definitely go to this place for Thai Food! It has just moved to the top of my list of Thai places to go.

I had driven past Rouen Thai a number of times, on my way to kickball. I was always curious to try it, and it had good reviews. Fortunately an excuse arose when the girlfriend picked up a Groupon for it. I was instantly impressed with the decor. Usually Thai restaurants have unique decor, but this was the best I've seen in Tampa Bay. There were even a few areas to sit on pillows while you eat. As we'd never been and were curious to try everything, we got the Rouen Thai Sample, which has the following: -Shrimp Tempura: recognizable and your average. -Fried Wontons: not your average fried wontons, as they are triangular, and the meat is ground into a paste. Still, very flavorful. -Crab Rangoon: this might drive some people away, because it has curry powder in the mix. A new take on CR, but I think I'll stick with a more traditional version. -Egg Roll: It wasn't exactly apparent which roll was which, though one is in a philo dough roll and the other in something else. The egg roll was nice, full of meat and veggies. -Spring Roll: it looks different, tastes different. But the taste is great. Would order these again. On to the main course Girlfriend go the Chicken with Garlic and Black pepper. I think I was a bigger fan of it than she was. A lot of simple flavor, came out well. I went with the Pad Thai, hot. Usually when you go to a new Thai restaurant, you check out their pad thai. This was really good, but hot was HOT. Nose started running before I was even close to done. The food was all great, the service excellent, as our glasses were always full of water. I would gladly return, and go for my usual Thai favorite: Masuman

There are plenty of Thai restaurants in the area. That being said, this place is probably the best in the area. They have very extensive menu and it might take you a while to decide what to order. I ordered Thai iced tea and red curry with shrimp (medium hot). My husband ordered crab rangoon and Pat Thai with beef. The Pat Thai was one of the best I have had. The beef was very tender and it had the perfect amount of vegetable for me (not too much). The curry was good too, though the shrimp smelled a little bit. We orded medium hot for both, but to me they were more like mild. Spiciness really depends on each restaurant and if you like a little spicy like myslef, then I would say go hot at this place rather than medium. Crab rangoon was good and different: it was filled with yellow curry flavored cream cheese, not a typical crab rangoon with crab meat and scallion. The service was really good. They have two nice Thai ladies working...very attentive. I actually wanted to try their dessert but I was too full from their huge portioned entree so hopefully next time!
(4)michelle l.
It's not perfectly authentic (they have crab rangoon and shrimp tempura on the menu), but it's pretty darned good. Props for the traditional Thai restaurant decor and attire for staff. We started with the spring rolls, which were crispy and delicious. Then my husband had the Pad See Ew and I had the red curry with beef. Both entrees were huge, so much so that we both ended up taking enough home for another meal. Both were tasty and promise to reheat well. I was impressed that the waitress, on noticing how much rice I had left to go with the curry put extra rice in the to-go box without me asking. That was a nice, thoughtful touch. I will happily come back here. I love that they have thai chicken rice soup on the menu. I know where I'm getting take out the next time I have a cold! Hopefully they also pack up the little peppers in fish sauce which just makes that soup heavenly. They have Singha, but that's the only Thai beer they have on the menu.

We randomly walked in for dinner on 8/3/13, a Saturday evening. Before so much as a welcome, we were informed the place was closing in 25 minutes. That alone merits any patron turning around and walking out. If your closing time is 10:00 p.m., you close at 10:00 p.m. and graciously serve the customer who walks in 9:59 p.m., or at least you should, if you favor repeat business. We ordered the pad Thai, just like everyone else on Yelp. It was average at best, with too much peanut sauce, but potentially could be good. Maybe it was b/c we were 25 minutes from closing time.... Also ordered the vegetables and beef. It was overpriced for both quantity and quality. The beef was overcooked, chewy and lacked flavor. We asked for it "hot" and could discern no heat whatsoever. The only reason this place makes it to two stars was the soup, which I would order again. That is to say if I ever went there again.

Love me some Rouen Thai! Love living 2 minutes from here - it's a weekly staple in our household. Thai is one of our favorite foods and theirs is one of our two favorite Thai places. We're big on the pad Thai (I know, I know, typical) BUT it's so good that I don't want to mess with a good thing! We have also had a couple of other dishes (sweet and sour chicken, veggie with rice) and they were also very good. As seems to be common with Thai food, it'll fill you up without weighing you down, like greasy/fatty foods do. We've eaten in and taken out - eating in is nice. It's an awkward little place, admittedly, but it's pleasant. The staff has always been friendly and usually prompt with drink refills and anything else we ask for. Definitely try it! Everything Gandy and south is kind of devoid of food options, so Rouen Thai is a welcome restaurant down here.
(5)Phuong N.
This is the second best Thai restaurant in Tampa. The portions are big enough so you can bring leftovers home. There is never a wait on weekdays for dinner. The tofu pad thai and vegetable green curry are delicious. Service is quick and the staff are friendly.
(4)Danielle G.
Very good Thai food. Can order the pad thai without egg if needed. I got the order to go and it was ready when I got there. Staff was very friendly and restaurant appeared clean and orderly. Very beautiful inside. If you park in front of the restaurant don't hit the yellow poles while backing out. You can see the light pole quite clearly in your rear view mirror but the yellow posts protecting it are too short and everyone hits them.
(4)Bob K.
They need to update the menu. service nice but, probably would not go back since there are so many similar restaurants in our area. South Tampa, not too far from McDill Air Force Base.
(3)Austin H.
Great place for dinning. The food is great and so is the service. I recommend the chicken pad' thai.
(4)Yvonne C.
Been going here sporadically in the last few years, never had bad service and the meals are cooked to perfection (in terms of spiciness, and made to order!) great timing on the orders, you're never left sitting forever. I HIGHLY recommend their Thai tea.... Omg sooo yummy with every meal. I was adventurous enough to try frog legs and they were exquisite! Their squid is also exceptional. If you want a great meal, good service, fair pricing, and clean atmosphere, definitely try Rouen Thai!
(4)HR M.
Very Good. So far, the best Thai we have found in Tampa. We have ate here about 5 times and not been disappointed. It gets a little slow at lunchtime even if not really busy.
(4)Laura W.
Hands down, my favorite Thai restaurant in Tampa so far...and I eat a lot of Thai food!! In fact, I traveled to Thailand a few years ago, and this has been the most authentic food I have had since that trip. The menu is one of the most diverse Thai menus I've seen in the area - pages filled with so many options, it's difficult to go wrong. Soups, salads, apps, noodles, rice, curry...you name it, nothing has been a disappointment for me. Let alone I am always able to enjoy it for future meals as the portion sizes are very generous, a total bonus for someone that loves this place as much as I do. Rouen Thai also boasts on-site dried and hand-crushed Thai chili peppers, not something you see everyday, but it definitely gives their food an extra kick, even if you just order it "medium." I also thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere. The place is decorated beautifully and there is an option to sit at an authentic thai table (no shoes and your feet hang underneath the table as you sit on a pillow on the floor). The service has always been great - very friendly staff and never a wait for the food to get to the table. Each time I'm in, they also seem to do a great take out business - if I lived closer, I'd be there multiple times a week I'm sure! Rouen Thai is definitely in my Top 5 favorite restaurants, and the first Thai restaurant I'd recommend to anyone.
(5)Jennie W.
Hello take out! Pad Thai and hot and spicy soup oh yeah cant go wrong. Flavor flavor my taste buds are happpppy!
(4)Mark S.
I admit..I wasn't really in the mood for Thai and not so hungry, but I'd hoped Thai spices would inspire..something.. I ordered the tofu veggies, medium spice. it wasn't good. It really tasted like the sauce was made with beef, even though they said otherwise...maybe it was just so bland or uninspiring? My lunch-mate was equally unimpressed. It's too bad, because the service was great! They comped my meal when they saw I only ate about 3 pieces of tofu, were very attentive and pleasant. But next time I'll go down the street to Thailand Restaurant!
(2)Elizabeth D.
Much better for takeout. Food is delicious but dine-in service is slow and it always smells like a wet rag.
(3)Billy M.
I have become somewhat of a Thai snob and have had plenty of weak Pad Thai and poorly flavored curry, but not here. This place is my very favorite Thai restaurant on the Tampa side of the bridge bar none. All I have left to say is Panang Duck....awesome!!
(5)Adam Y.
We have patronized Rouen Thai dozens of times and always found the food to be pretty good. The Pad Thai is always a favorite and they have a salad dish with duck that is excellent. We've also tried some of their fish specials that were so huge we couldn't get close to finishing it. But the point of writing this was a take out experience where a) my wife got sick from the food and to add insult to injury b) they went ahead and added on a modest tip to the take out order. When I went back and checked the credit card receipt I clearly had lined the tip line out and just extended the food total to the bottom. Now I know some people will tip everywhere, but I tip generously when i dine in, but for take out orders I rarely do. No matter whether you agree or disagree with that, the nerve of the restaurant person to add on some de minimis amount (it was like $5) is wrong. I didn't go back to ask them about it, nor did I call the credit card company to remove the amount. It wasn't worth the effort, but I have not gone back to this restaurant and will not do so. I'm not going to say the restaurant is unethical. It could have been just one person but I felt compelled to share this now that i am a Yelp member.

Very good food at very decent prices. Authentic Thai cuisine, excellent service, and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Though it's a twenty minute drive to get there, I am quickly becoming a regular here. I highly recommend this hidden treasure.
(4)Malinda L.
We had a great experience here the other night. We started with the soup which was good and then we ordered the Curry pork and the volcano chicken. Both were great but I thought there was a bit too much of the chili sauce on the volcano chicken. The chicken was made really well though and it had an awesome flavor. I loved it! We will definitely be returning.

I first went to Rouen Thai based on recommendations from friends that had been to Thailand. They said that it was "really good for the area." What I didn't realize at the time was that there just aren't a lot of good Thai restaurants in South Tampa. One of my best friends growing up is Thai so I have sampled lots of deliciousness at her home over the years; its one of my favorite types of cuisines and I'm picky. Rouen Thai is close to where I live so I go fairly often. It's pretty decent thai food...I just wish that they would kick it up on the flavor. The food just doesn't have a lot of that traditional flavor I love. I'm not talking about spiciness, they can always kick that up for you no problem. I'm talking about the lemongrass...the white pepper...the lime...the fish sauce, all the dishes I've tried just need "more." It just doesn't have enough fragrancy. I'm not sure if they're trying to play it safe and appeal to a wider pool or what. Most of the patrons I've seen are not Thai. The service is great, they're always very attentive and accommodating (even when I showed up 5 minutes before closing begging for some Tom Yum to go). The restaurant itself is very nice, there's a lot of wood carvings on the walls and a lot of art and details throughout the whole place. Overall, a good experience specially compared to the limited good choices down here.

Interestingly enough I pass this hole in the wall Thai restaurant all the time. I actually even used to work on Gandy for years and it still never seemed compel to try it. I was meeting a friend who works on base for lunch and he suggested this place, as he often eats here because if it's proximity to work. We were the first to arrive so the staff was still setting up for lunch service. Once the doors were opened we were seated. The restaurant was very dark even though it was early afternoon. We ordered two of the lunch specials: the seafood pad thai and the panang curry which was served with rice. As a starter we were delivered soup. I didn't get to taste the pad Thai but it looked good and my friend ate it all so that is probably a good sign. The curry was ok but nothing special and I've had better. I am not in a rush to return to this restaurant but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it again. I think I will continue to pass by this restaurant and stick the other Thai places currently in my rotation.
(2)Robin K.
Yeap 3 stars! This was my goto Thai restaurant in South Tampa but I wasn't too thrilled with the food on this visit. Positives: * Love the atmosphere inside the restaurant, beautifully adorned with gold plated sculptures and paintings. Very inviting. * Staff is very attentive, they checked on us and refilled our drinks regularly. * They have a good array of Thai dishes, customize the heat level according to your liking. * House fried rice was great. Negatives: * There isn't enough parking available. EVER! This restaurant shares parking with the Italian restaurant next door to them. * Food was ok. I ordered the green curry with chicken. It was lacking flavor, I have had better versions at other places. Plus not enough chicken, it was mostly coconut curry. Not sure if I'll be back, time to venture out and see what else South Tampa has to offer.
(3)Shasha S.
the ambience of this restaurant is very oriental. The food, however, is not that great. perhaps that's why you would never find this place crowded. The server was polite. prices are quite high .. price: high ambience: great food quality: average
(2)Kate E.
Stopped in on a Sunday. Cute decor and ambience. Service was good. Started with the thai sampler. Way to much over fried egg rolls crab Rangoon and whatever else. Do not order. Got the pad see ew and chicken and shrimp panang curry. The entrees redeemed our visit. The panang curry was loaded with veggies which is not normally the case. Sauce was a little watery but overall I enjoyed it. Pad see we was decent (I only had a bite). Don't know if I'll be back, definitely enjoyed other thai spots more in south tampa.
(3)Josiah G.
I've been twice since my last bad experience and I'm happy to say that it's been fantastic. The portions have been big and the flavor has been on point. This is is the best Pad See Ew I've found in Tampa. I'm glad to be a regular again.
(4)Austin P.
My favorite Thai place in South Tampa
(4)D D.
Tried this place for the first time today & we'll definitely be back. We had the crab Rangoon, cashew nut chicken, and drunken noodles (can't remember the Thai name for it). Everything was delicious!!

This was the worst experiences we've had with a restaurant in Tampa. Food was bad and we were treated as if we were in interrogation. Staying in, ill, on a Saturday night we figured we'd pick up take out from here. The phone order was an ordeal but insignificant regarding what followed. We put in a big order including massaman curry, pad thai, Papaya salad, and satay, things you find in every Thai restaurant. We also always get Tom Kha without the chicken but they wouldn't make it that way. On a Saturday evening the place was completely empty. We picked up the order, as we drove away I open the Papaya salad box. I'm surprised at how small the portion is, and also how old the veggies in it look, like they were cut three days ago. I take two bites from it and it tastes nothing like papaya salad, just a heavy garlic taste, then there is a huge piece of garlic, a little bi grated on one side. And rotten lettuce. I would have put away the lettuce and the garlic and eaten the rest of it if it was edible at all -- I like Papaya salad that much. We were only two mins away and went right back. The older I guess manager lady sees the garlic, the rotten lettuce, hears its bitter, 85%of the salad is still there -- she doesn't offer to have it remade or anything else, and says won't refund it because it was eaten. The whole attitude was very upsetting and not worth $8+ and we were shocked the restaurant would not take responsibility and would not care at all about their reputation. She eventually agreed to refund the salad but not before asking each one of us for our name, phone numbers (which she already had because we put the order on the phone and paid with a card) -- and then asked for my ID! This was pure harassment. The food is not authentic at all -- in addition to the worst papaya salad I've ever had (probably ate at over 100 Thai restaurants) the Pad Thai, which is a staple in US Thai restaurants, was terrible. The portion was big, however, this clearly was not made fresh. It completely lacked flavor, not even a hint of lemongrass or lime, nothing. First time I've had a few bites of Pad Thai and left it. They put big chunks of green peppers in Massaman curry -- we've never seen that anywhere. And it was more dark orange to red than dark yellow. Satay was also very bland and a super small portion. The decor inside looked nice, it's too bad neither the food nor the service matches even the most mediocre Thai restaurants in the country.

Even better than my first time here.... I decided I needed a Thai redemption, after a horrible expirience at a restaurant claiming to be Thailand, a few days. So i decided to come here +I have had to laundry accross the street. Any way walk in greeted by friendly staff. Sat down to a wobbily table, asked to be moved, so got moved with a smile. I really wanted a drink while I waired but Luigi next door was full. Sat down, grabbed a beer. Now again I still wanted Thai food to fill a craving but was too hungry this time. Anyways order spring rolls, not 5 maybe ten minutes the young thai server brings me spring rolls, hust what I wanted. Fried? Nooooo. I wanted fresh. So I ask if they had them, but to no avail. So I asked if they are good. So of course she says "yes" . I try one, and almost burn my mouth on the second bite its that good. I was impressed cosidering I do not like fried Thai food. ( I would have a picture but they dissappeared ;) ;) --) Next time I will try more options. Once again, good food again, even better service and again my cup was not allowed to be empty...maybe they read my last post?? Check this place out, tasty food, American options for the picky eaters you know. What do you have to lose? Great alternative. Glad I stopped, going to try Luigis? next door, room mate wants food, and Thai would to good for him...
(4)Andrea N.
First time trying and I got an order to go. I got the shrimp pad Thai which tasted like they used old oil or something, not good at all, and I've never had pad Thai that didn't come with a lime but sure enough that was the case. Then I ordered spring rolls and asked if the were shrimp was told yes but no. It was 4 small deep friend cabbage rolls that I paid $7 dollars for. Bottom line, poor quality and over priced.

Man this was excellent Thai food. We had just got in to Tampa and were looking for something easy and local and came across Rouen. Many things on the menu sounded amazing but the girlfriend had to go with curry dishes which are our favorites. I went with green curry (old reliable) and she went with the pineapple curry (new to us both). I can't say how good the pineapple curry was! I'll be looking for that at every Thai place I go, but sadly in KC won't be able to find it often. The service was nice, had a family feel to it, and the place was pretty busy on a Thursday night which is a good sign. Highly recommended.
(5)Teresa L.
My favorite Thai in Tampa so far. The food is good and served fairly quick. I always know what to expect, lunch service is fairly quick, and the wait staff are attentive. The much better choice than some of the other local options.
(4)Michele D.
Great place to get some thai. Love the fact it's right down the street from where I live. If this is a place near you. No worries... You will enjoy the food here and be happy you didn't hike a distance to get your spicy or sweet fix!
(4)Kris D.
Best Chicken Pad Thai, Fried shrimp Rice in town. Call in: take will be ready when you arrive. Very consistent and large portions.
(5)Wes H.
First Thai place I have had in Tampa. I order take out from here almost weekly. It consistently very good, however I do wish the portions were a little bigger, bc it is so delicious.
(4)Kelly K.
Always exceptional! Nice, friendly staff have not had a bad meal here. For thai food in tampa it's one of my families favorites. Would recommend!
(4)T-money V.
As some have reviewed, the food isn't fully authentic but it's delicious nonetheless! The atmosphere is great and the waitresses are always welcoming and prompt. Their lunch menu is satisfactory!
(5)Sarah L.
Good Thai food and a neat atmosphere (lots of wood and gold) but we went on a saturday night at 7:30 and there was only one other table in the whole place. They must do a lot of carry-out business. Chicken Satay was very good and the sauce on the Hurricane Scallops was delicious, though the scallops themselves were a bit chewy. Fried donut things for dessert were very good with the sweet dipping sauce. Good service, but limited wine list.
(4)Sandy J.
I went to Rouen Thai for lunch. ("Rouen" means wooden house by the way.) It doesn't look like much outside, but they did a pretty good job decorating the place, trying to make it look like a traditional Thai wooden house (except for the ceiling, they should do something about that). The staff was also dressed in Thai attire. (Just a side note: some of the waiters and waitresses weren't Thai though.) Overall the atmosphere was very pleasant. I went there not expecting much, but my friend and I were so hungry we decided to give it a try. It was actually pretty good. The lunch entrees come with soup and an egg roll. I had som thum (papaya salad) and Gai Pad Prig (chicken with chili, bell peppers, onions, ginger, and green beans). The food presentation was nice. I would have liked more rice with my dish though. (The waitress did give me more at no additional cost.) I've had better and I've had worse, that's why I gave it 3 stars. I'm Thai, so I have higher expectations than others would for Thai food. It was decent though. I'll keep you posted if I find a really good Thai restaurant in Tampa. However, if I'm in that area again (Gandy) I'll definitely go back.
(3)J T.
This place is great in comparison to other local Thai places. We are regulars here and the service is great. Been going here a while and they know what we order and start right when we walk in the door. A fave for sure.
(4)Joe P.
Very good food, I loved the Pad Thai with seafood. The service could have been better, but I will return.
