Nice, small establishment. I came here during lunch with some work colleagues, and the place was packed. Sure, we had to wait for a table, but the food was worth it. If you come during lunch hours, you may want to pack it to go. It is definitely worth a try.

Amazing food and service! Came here because of the yelp reviews and the restaurant lived up to the stars. The owner was super nice and helpful. The decor is great and the seats are even super comfy.

Mangu has been on my bookmarks list since forever, but because it's all the way in Brandon it remains there. One day last week I happened to be working nearby, so of course I had to go to Mangu. I've seen the pictures on Yelp of this place, but they're mostly of the food, so I didn't realize it's a cafeteria-style restaurant. The tables are big and clean and each has a vase of (fake) flower. Quite lovely actually. The smell of the place is so good that I bet you can't resist eating once you've stepped in. I not only didn't resist, but I ordered everything but the kitchen sink. I swear I started out with just rice with black beans and the chicken curry. But then I saw the chorizo so I had to get a few pieces. Then I saw the chicken gizzards in a brown gooey sauce and I was curious, so I asked the lady to give me a couple of pieces. Of course, I had to get the plantains because they are one of my favorites. As I was moving down the line to the cash register, I saw a man emerged from the kitchen with a huge tray of chicharronnes and I definitely lost it. If there were a camera pointing at my face, I'm sure it would catch my eyes get wide and my mouth going Uuuuuh. Yes, I did get some. With the big Styrofoam take out container full to the rim and filled with everything I could possibly get, I was ready to pay. The whole thing was under $10! Once sat down, I dug in. The rice was exactly the way I like it; tender and seasoned just right. Actually, I don't know if the rice is seasoned because the sauce from the curry chicken was poured onto the rice, and it was a great combination! The curry was delish and so was everything else I sampled. I liked the gizzards, but was glad I didn't get a whole order of it because the seasoning, not the gizzards themselves, was something I wasn't used to eating. The chicharronnes was perfectly done; skin so crunchy and just the right amount of meat and fat. The order was so big I ended up only eating 1/3 of it. Before leaving I ordered a passion fruit juice. I was told that it's fresh. It smelled so good and it tasted heavenly! Oh, I'll be back.

Oh yes!! One of the easiest five stars I've ever given. Have yet to visit, so can't say much about the establishment and/or location. Usually get the wifey to bring my grub while she's in the area. She says the restaurant is very clean and offers great service, so I'll just take her word it. Being from the D.R I've had the chance to try some really good Dominican food. Many places in Tampa have disappointed me, due in large to lack of real Dominican flavor. Mangu cafe is as close to authenticity as it gets. The Mangu is perfect, get it with the eggs, fried cheese and salami (salchichon). There is nothing like it. To truly admire the Mangu, it helps to have a taste for Dominican food. The U.S. Has the mashed potato, D.R. Has the Mangu. Both are good, Mangu is just better. Tried the Rice and Pinto Beans with oxtail, the Moro (arroz con guandules), Ceviche, Sancocho, and the Dominican Cake. Enjoyed every single bite. But I must point out the Ceviche and Dominican Cake stood out the most in my eyes. Respect the fact that they included octopus on the ceviche, that's a bonus. Far as the Dominican Cake goes, let me tell you... It was not only flawless but brought me back to my childhood, can't recall last time that happened. This cake alone is worth the trip. It's the official cake of D.R. Very authentic. Anyone who disagrees can unfriend me now. Not sure if they offer pastelitos, chivo, con con, or my personal favorite Pasteles en Hoja. (Feel free to google them) These dishes would put Mangu in a league of their own. If there was a negative, its the Sancocho, not that it was bad. It was a solid dish, just not as good or as authentic as my Moms. But then again, every Dominican says that lol. Try Mangu, you won't be disappointed... Take it from the Mangu Master.

Since moving to the area from NJ, I am so glad to have found this place! I love the food here. Service is very friendly and inviting! It's become our favorite spot on Saturday mornings!

I had the mangu bowl with eggs, sausage and fried cheese with Cafe con Leche. It was tasty, but I expected a little more flavor in the mangu. I only had breakfast there so looking forward to trying lunch and/or dinner.

Had to wait on service at the Honda dealership, it was lunchtime, so I fired up yelp and found this gem. Walked the few blocks and found it. I told the young lady at the counter that I had never eaten Dominican food, she walked me through the selection and I settled the beans and rice with beef and ox tail. Wow, I was really impressed with both the food and the service. Highly recommended.

Wow! What a gem this place is. I had the pork, yellow rice and black beans. Let me tell you...the flavors were off the charts. Not to sound morbid, but if I ever had a last meal request, it would be what I ate today. Superb. And the owner was down to earth and so welcoming!

I have not had the urge to rate a restaurant five stars yet. But this... It's incredibly good. For roughly $30, they fed 4 hungry people for lunch. It was as simple as one entree and one side in great portions- enough to share with one other person if you were both not so hungry. We tried the goat, the beef stew and the chicharrones. All of them were SOOOO GOOD. If we ever come back to Tampa, I will make it a point to come to this place again. And as I fly back to LA tonight, I will surely dream of that goat, beef, and pig again

I love it when I discover a gem of a restaurant by chance. There is no way I would have ever stopped here were it not for the 4 hour wait I was facing down the street at Ideal Automotive. They were installing some Powersteps on my truck and I had to wait for it. The waiting room was fine but it was driving me up the wall. "Is there a place close by to eat?" I asked. "Yeah, just down the road about a quarter mile. But there is no sidewalk". So I braved the side of the road to get to that "Latin place next to Hertz". It's called Mangú. Mangú is mashed green plantains. They have the consistency of thick mashed potatoes. It's a breakfast staple for Dominicans, including sausage, fried cheese and fried eggs. I love Mangú. They had the food all ready in a good line he served me from. I skipped the eggs since those were made to order and I opted for what was already prepared. Fried cheese and sausage. It was AWESOME! The taste is homey and authentic. They have so many other yummy looking things and I only have one stomach. So I'm coming back. This is about 45 minutes from my house. No matter. The restaurant is small, and it's in a run down strip mall. It's not the place you'd probably stop by if your just driving by. Trust me, stop. You'll be glad you did.

My favorite place when it comes to latin food! Great service family owned and operated. The owner is always on top of everything making sure the quality is great! I go there about three times per week! My favorite plate is the Mangu mix with bacalao! Awesome! Definitely worth the money! Very clean and casual.

Mangu is mm mm good. I never heard of mangu. Sounds like a funny name to me. It's Dominican eats. Mash up some green plantains, add some butter and other stuff and you get mangu. It's mashed like mashed potatoes, but plantains. You eat it as if it's like a starch like rice, or noodles. There are a lot of options you can eat it with. We tried it with chicken. It is so good. The plate that you get is humongous. You will get full just looking at it. You get a huge size of mangu, some Dominican sausage, triangle shaped fried cheese, and whatever entree that you choose. Food is served from a hot plate. They will break it down to you what's available. . There is also mofongo which is a a fried mashed puerto rican plantain which they fry and make with pork. You can choose either of the two. I had mofongo with beef stew. Next time I am there, I want to have some ceviche and try their whole fish, or shrimp. Their salmon looks really good too. The menu is not listed on the website because they have different offerings every day. Make sure to come early because food will be gone. If you want to try a Dominican drink, then try the morir sonando. That is basically a creamsicle drink. It is good and very sweet. They also have home made desserts as well. When you come in here, you will come in as a customer, and leave as family. Robinson and his crew will hook you up with some good Dominican food. It doesn't matter if you have no idea what it is, just try it, and you will be sold!!!!

This place had pretty good food. I had the ox tail entree with rice on the side. There are two types of rice. There is one type that is brown with some dark peas inside and then there is plain white rice which you can request to come with cooked beans on top. I chose the more colorful option with the dark peas inside. I also had 2 Dominican beverages and a slice of Dominican cake. Ox tail: Tender with good flavor. I'm a huge fan of ox tail and i've had it a lot better elsewhere, but that's not to put down the one I had at Mangú. It was good and I would have it again, but it didn't blow my mind. Additionally, the portion was too small for the money (the price section of this review has more detail on this). Rice: The rice was very good. It was brown with some dark peas mixed in. It was cooked just right, not dry and the flavor was on point. It was even better with the hot sauce that is stationed at every table. Drinks: The first drink I had is called Morir Soñando. It tastes like an orange creamsicle. Tangy, sweet, creamy and refreshing. I liked it and would get it again, but it's not "Holy cow, that was awesome!" good. I also had an orange colored soda in a glass bottle that was pretty good, called Merengue. It's flavor is difficult to describe but if you like soft drinks definitely try this. Both of these drinks are authentic Dominican. Cake: It's the only true cake they have and can be identified by its light yellow color and it's white frosted top. I read really good things about it, but what a disaster it was. It was dry, the flavor was nothing special, and I have had better cake pulled out of plastic packaging at gas stations. Service: Excellent! I was treated well and there was one gentleman who seemed liked he was the owner and he provided great service and made sure my experience there was positive. Price: Everything above cost me a little over $17 without including the tip which raised the cost even more. Considering I was not full even after the dessert, I think the pricing is either too high, or the portions are too small. Essentially, I think I overpaid considering what I got. For this type of food in a casual restaurant, I should have left stuffed for $17, but NOPE... the 4 or 5 small pieces of ox tail that I got didn't do the trick. If you aren't aware, ox tail usually has just as much bone as it has meat and that fact apparently was not considered when they decided on the portion size. This would have been a 4 star review had it not been for the horrible cake and the end cost being too high relative to the portion sizes. If you want to try Dominican food and you don't live too far, consider trying this place out. Happy Dining!

Small, fairly new Dominican restaurant on Adamo Dr across from the Brandon Ford dealership. Since I'm a fan of hole-in-the-wall restaurants, I stopped in for lunch (as they close at 6pm every day). The menu on the wall was a little difficult to figure out but the lady guided me through what they offered that day. I chose the classic Ropa Vieja dish (see picture)(braised beef with black beans and yellow rice). It was flavorful and was a large portion; more than enough to fill me up. I also tried the Dominican soda called Merengue, which I don't recommend, because it has a strange aftertaste. Other than that, the service was good and the restaurant was clean. It is very small, so it's not good a place for groups. But if you're in the area with a hankering for Latin food, give it a shot.

Yes!!! Yelper who are not here is missing out. Definitely agree with 5 star rating. This is a very cute restaurant and has a lot to offer. The set up is contemporary with main color in lemon green. The facility is small but full function. During the lunch time, the tables will be occupied early. So come a bit early. I am only there once. I have already fall in love to this restaurant. I not sure they have same menu each day. They do have special every day. They have been opened since December. It is actually one of my clients told me about this restaurant since he knows I am yelping. I saw Mel and Mark review there. I decide to give them a try. All right, let's talk about food. This is a Dominican Republic cuisine with a lot of twist. It looks like cafeteria style for you to pick the food. Their specialty is the Mongu. What actually Mongu. It smash plantain and made it like mash potato. But it is plantain base. You will not see it in the food tray as the display. You need to request them to get it from the kitchen. I did not go with the traditional two items special. I just pick a bit each from the tray. Today special is crab meat top on the salmon. The salmon is marinated and oven bakes. It creates the crispy crab meat when the crumb is cook. This is good. The oxtail is braised with sweet sauce. The oxtail meat can be pickup by the folk. The marinated sauce went into the bone. I was sucking to the bone pick up the last bit. It is that good. The third item is the paella with seafood -- clam, mussel, shrimp, and more. Good paella. A lot of food in one plate. The bath room is clean and well up keep, the people are friendly, the food is GREAT, the price is affordable. They deserve to be pad at the back. As the student of the class has said- easy A. This will begin my 300 review.

What a cute and delicious find! I went here for lunch today with a friend. I've never had Dominican food before but I've always wanted to. From start to finish the experience was enjoyable. When we walked in we were greeted in a very friendly way and asked if we had tried the food before. My friend and I both hadn't so they explained the different dishes served. They suggested we try the mangu, a traditional dish made of mashed plantains...delicious! She let us try a spoonful which she covered in the sauce from the chicken. She even took the time to ask if we ate meat before she did that. She was very thoughtful and we both ended up ordering the mangu. They give you large portions and mine was more than enough to satisfy my hunger. It was delicious! The ambiance was nice with newer furniture and the walls were bright and clean. I'm no stranger to hole in the wall Hispanic restaurants and this one definitely stood out both in cleanliness, the friendliness of the staff, the modern furniture and decorations and of course the delicious food! I'll be returning soon!

Great breakfast. It's a little heavy but definitely full of flavor. Bring your Tums lol. Milky orange creamsicle drink is really good, too. Can't wait to come back and try their lunch!

Totally worth all the hype! We went for breakfast and tried all 2 types of the Mangú- plantain, potato, and yucca... The yucca was my fave! The woman working was super sweet and very helpful. We will definitely be back our next time to Tampa!

I was leaving a near by dealership when the words "mangu" crossed my view. I wasn't even hungry but I had to stop by and am SO glad I did. They serve portions your mom would give you after saying you're too skinny. They had everything from rabo to pernil. I had the rabo with white rice and beans and a slice of dominican cake for dessert (they also offer them as cupcakes). My husband had the pernil with the rice and beans. We both wiped our plates clean. The food was delicious, well marinated, hot, great portions... There was nothing it lacked. Nice modern decor inside. If you eat in you get served on real plates and silverware (no trays). Such a good find.

If you're looking for authentic dominican food here in Tampa, you definitely found it! I grew up on this food and they prepare it with the same love my grandmother and parents used! Awesome find for me and hope others feel the same! I had the large breakfast platter with a little of everything and of course the Morir Soñando beverage! Holla!!

Very, very good food. My boyfriend loves the oxtails from this restaurant and says that the customer service is great. I haven't personally stepped foot in the restaurant but he lauds how tidy the restaurant is. I usually send him to get food :) Do not look for this place to stand out from the road although they have a banner hanging outside the restaurant. If you're speeding and not paying attention, you may pass it.

I cannot say enough good things! My mother & I had the Ropa Vieja and the Chocolate Guava Glazed Ribs, and they were the best we've ever had by far!!! This was also the most friendly kind service, we ordered extra to go & 2 drinks each & it was still under $20. I've I would give more stars if I could!! Thank you so much!!!!

Mangú has a spot as one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area. Although I grew up on southern cooking, Mangú brings back memories of my granny's giant Sunday dinners. It tastes like that good ol' home cooked comfort food. The restaurant is a small space that I probably would have never found if it weren't for Yelp. From the overall space, to the plates and cups, visiting Mangú felt like visiting family (you know, like those cousins you've never met before). Everyone there was extremly welcoming. They went through all of the food items they had, and when it was time for making selections the food was piled high. I almost told him to stop putting rice on my plate, but I got excited at the thought of having left overs. Next time I'll tell them I don't need as much food. As I mentioned before, the food is some of the best I've had here. The only downside to my visit would be that the food was so good I ended up eating way too much.

I had the chicken stew. It was fabulous. Add in a side of chicharones, and some CoCo Flan for dessert, and you have yourself a very hearty meal. As a matter of fact the flan was so good I bought more CoCo and Cheese Flan to take home. The space was clean, the staff very helpful and friendly. Try it, you'll like it!

I thought I would try something new today for breakfast and glad that I did. The staff was friendly and explained all the choices that were available. I decided to go with a little of everything which is the "Mantu Sampler". I liked all the selections. The bacon was tasty and the plantain was good. The food is filling, I may not need lunch today.

This is my 2nd time eating at Mangu. On my first visit last week I got bacalao (codfish) with yellow rice and beans, 2 chicken pastelillos, a morir soñando (orange juice with milk drink) and a cheesecake. ALL of the food was amazing! Today I stopped by and had BBQ ribs with a guava BBQ sauce and pollo guisado (stewed chicken) both accompanied with arroz con gandules and an oreo cheesecake. AGAIN an amazingly tasty fresh food! My only regret today was not getting another order of those ribs!!!! Don't walk RUN to eat here. You won't regret it!!!

Found this place due to my office location when they first opened and I haven't stopped visiting them yet...The food and the options are great. Food well made and full of flavor. You have to ask for the famous drink called "Morir Soñando" which is a blend of freshly squeezed orange juice and milk with a hint of vanilla extract to top it off, it is amazing! The mangù goes without being said, I mean it's only the name of the place Lol! Enjoy!

Incredible service and delicious food. Not a fan of Latin cuisine but this even tops what I am normally fond of. Family owned and plates constructed as if they were flavored with years of family secrets and tradition. A drive by turned to a landmark. Hidden gem. Must try!

The food was out of this world!!! The food was fresh and tasted like homemade. Very reasonable prices and generous portions! Freshly squeezed lemonade was amazing and I have a whole new appreciation towards lemonade now. Everybody was super nice and friendly and I enjoyed talking to the ladies that work there. If I lived in Tampa, I would be coming there all the time! Out of this world! Thank you!

Came across this place thanks to other Yelpers, and my faith in humanity hath been restored. It used to be difficult to find a place with good authentic Dominican food like my mom would make for me at home, but not anymore. The service was great, and extremely reasonably priced. The food was even better than I was expecting since I do come from a Dominican family myself. If you're looking for a place to eat good Dominican food, look no further, this is it. Thank you Yelpers, and thank you gentleman that helped me.

I love Latin food period and often find myself travelling on the other side of town (Tampa/Armenia Av) to get something tasty. Well no more long hauls for me; The Brandon area finally has a great restaurant to cater to your cravings. My favorite aside from the Mangú is the oxtail with black beans and yellow rice. Atmosphere is warm and friendly. You are greeted with a smile and they are eager to please. You have a partial view of the kitchen from the counter and it is immaculate. Can't wait to try the ribs next.
