My boyfriend saw an ad for this place and he is a sucker for fried chicken so we decided to try it out. When we walked in there was no one there but us and a very friendly waitress sat us down and guided us through their Made from scratch menu. My boyfriend and I both ordered the fried chicken with corn fritters and collard greens. All meals come with rice and gravy. The rice and gravy was divine, the corn fritters was my favorite and my boyfriend finished off his chicken AS WELL as mine! I have to say that my favorite part of the meal was the Peach Cobbler. It was the perfect size and simply delicious. I am positive we will go back.

IF YOU LOVE GREAT FOOD--THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO BUT PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO!!!! If you value service & care about where your money goes--you might want to rethink ever coming to this establishment! Often times I've heard "support soul food restaurants, support black owned restaurants" and grant it, I haven't met the owners just yet, but the service here is exactly why people have second thoughts about soul food (besides the fact that its unhealthy) and/or don't support black owned restaurants. This restaurant for the food alone should have 4-5 stars as you can see on the other 22+ yelpers' reviews; however, the unprofessional employees, disrespect, and horrible service easily equates to one star--or hell NO STAR at all. My family and I came to this restaurant initially on Sept. 12th (less than 10 days ago). We ordered over the phone and then picked our food up. As I walk in to pick up $40 worth of food, you have one lady sitting down counting her money (possibly a waitress about to get off work), another female worker fussing with a male employee in front of me and other customers in the dining area about how cooks and people in the back shouldn't be answering the phones. I was so hungry, I tried ignoring their conversation and then the male finally said, "Well y'all we don't need to be out here having disagreements in front of the customers" but then he continues fussing with the female employees who are going back and forth. Finally, I get my food and roll up out of there as quickly as possible. (I ordered kettle fried chicken, lima beans, and macaroni which was all delish). My family ordered bbq chicken, sides, and honestly the only bad thing we ordered was the bland collard greens. Moving on to today (September 20th).....this was the finally straw! I will definitely be talking to the owners, local churches, and the BBB about this place, but Yelp gets it first so I can warn my foodies to BEWARE. Today, I call my order in: Baked Turkey Wings w/ corn and lima beans and a side order of fried gizzards, (1) bbq chicken dinner with double mac and cheese add one bbq leg quarter, and (1) rib dinner with mac and cabbage. The lady on the phone who is taking my order is apologizing to some customers who are in the restaurant saying how sorry she is and taking my order at the same time. Order is placed. She quickly tells me that they are out of cabbage and so I request lima beans instead. Five minutes later, the lady calls my phone back saying they are out of ribs and noone told her and so I get kettle chicken instead w/ same sides. My husband goes in to pick up our food. He's immediately taken aback by this young female employee fussing at another employee about "lock the door or people will keep coming in" and the greeter tells her, "no its not 6pm just yet"....my husband comes out shaking his head saying the owners should fire the entire staff for how unprofessional they all are. To make a long story, I notice as I'm plating my kids food that the extra leg quarter that we ordered for my son--is M.I.A. and my plate only has kettle fried chicken (leg and thigh) with one piece of bread and a cup of rice and gravy (which I did not order). I call back immediately at 6:14pm (which is after closing) and the girl answers the phone really dry saying "Hello" like she's irritated. I thought I called someone else who just didn't want to talk! She didn't say the name of the restaurant or anything--just hello! I went on to tell her about my missing bbq leg quarter, side of mac and lima beans and she says, well let me go talk to the cook. She asks him what happens and he's in the background shouting, "I put the leg quarter in there and it should have been bagged with the rest of the order...she might be missing mac but she ain't missing the leg quarter"! (Like seriously, who lies about missing food?) I asked the lady for the manager's name and the best time to reach him/her. She stated, "her name is Trina & we can't give her number out". I totally understand that, but then I go on to ask for the best time of day to call and reach her and she says, "Um I don't know she comes sometimes but I don't know you can try tomorrow for her or her husband" and you can come get your leg quarter not now because we're closed but another day. Needless to say, I DO NOT plan to return for a leg quarter. I urge you and your family to please FIND ANOTHER SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT whenever you're in the mood for soul food. The customer is not always right here. You mean absolutely nothing to the employees although our money is what pays their minimum wage or whatever they're paid. Service trumps good food any day of the week. I'd like to leave you with this thought. If the employees are rude enough to argue in front of you, & tell you you're lying about missing food, do you really think they care about food safety and cleanliness? You've been warned!

Really good food. Had the kettle chicken, fried catfish, mac and cheese, collard greens, black eye peas and green beans. Both came with white bread and cornbread. Everything was great.

Food is banging. It's hard to find a sold food place in tampa. I'm so glad that this is so close to my new place. Second time here within a month. The greens are soooooooo good.

First, don't accidentally go to Mama's Kitchen BC that place is nasty. This place, however, is some of the best southern food I've had in a long time and I'm from Louisiana so I'd know. The people were SUPER friendly, the prices were ridiculously cheap and the menu made it almost impossible to choose. The pulled pork was tender and tasted perfect--not too sweet or too smokey. The sides were all good, even the rice which I normally don't like. My husband had the kettle chicken which was perfectly fried, seasoned and moist all the way through. These were the best catfish nuggets we've ever had. Also perfect: sweet tea, Mac and cheese, cornbread, corn fritters and the awesome seasoned collard greens. Free drink refills and salad bar. My only complaint was no diet soda and how can you gripe about diet when you're eating fried chicken? Definitely coming back and will try dessert.

Food was delicious, I got the kettle cooked chicken and my boyfriend got the fried chicken we both love it and our sides! And the corn bread was off the chain! The only negative is the service, the girls where very nice but things just took forever. I went in on a Sunday afternoon and I was in no rush, I suggest that. Because the food was so worth the wait!

Craving some BBQ on a Monday and the majority of the BBQ places were closed so we encountered Mama's Soul. We were immediately greated. Our waitress was very kind and pleasant but cook seem to be annoyed or was having a bad day. I ordered the half chicken which I was told it came with some rice and beans. My friend ordered their ribs and waitress indicated it came with the same. Our food didn't take long to arrive but I only got a quarter chicken and got charged for half and both rice and beans never arrived. BBQ sauce was outstanding as well as their mash. I'll probably will be back to give them another try and hopefully cook has a better attitute towards waitress and customers.

You definitely get a lot of food. I ordered the smothered pork chops which came with rice, cornbread, 2 sides and a salad bar. The huge grill out front smelled amazing. However, the food wasn't amazing. First off, you just get one chop. The outside of the pork chop was soggy as if the grease was not hot enough beforehand. The chop was also thin and dry tasting. In addition, it came with white tasteless gravy. White gravy is for biscuits, not porkchops! The salad bar was like being at an old school sizzler, bagged iceberg lettuce sprinkled with a few carrot strings, nothing special. I asked to change my order of pork chops to something else because I was not pleased. They bought me some ribs from the grill. Although, the ribs were much better, the experience was ruined for me by that time. The rib exchange is the only reason I am giving this restaurant 2 stars.

My taste buds said Daaaang!? I had the more than affordable $9.00 Gizzard basket and the most Unbelievable scrumptious collard greens EVER consumed by me... The service was great - extremely friendly, legitimately concerned with my overall experience.

This is the place to go when you don't want to cook and don't want to give your money to The Man. If you haven't tried it, it might be worth a shot. The food isn't terrible and you get quite a bit of it. The sides are important to execute well and the collared greens and Mac didn't disappoint. The rice was bland (what did you expect) but the cornbread was real. Which is what I'd describe this place as: a 'real' kitchen, where they make a TON of different foods and while not being 5/5 on any dish, they do so many well that it's a good catch-all if you want something other than X fast food. The prices were more expensive than most; the quantity and passable quality barely justify it. I had the ribs.

I ate there for lunch the service was very friendly however the ribs were very tough and it taste like store bought barbecue sauce the ribs were also salty and the cornbread was served cold I could not eat the rest of the food so I asked the waitress to bring me a to go box The price I paid for three small ribs cornbread rice and lima beans and one small glass of tea and the waitress did not ask me if I wanted another glass of tea the total cost was $19 and very expensive to eat food that I did not enjoy

The collards are amazing and the fried chicken is also better than mine. Even better is the price you pay for all the food you get. We will be back for sure

Had the catfish and it was OK. I was really looking for some fried pork chops like I used to get at the soul food joint north of Kennedy by University of Tampa. I came for a late lunch at around 2:00 The greens were cold, green beans were luke warm. Not impressed. Check the price before ordering the tea!

Just had a great lunch there. The first review, while probably accurate at the time it was written does not do the place justice. We chowed on fried chicken, oxtail, collard greens, mac and cheese, hush puppies, rice, cornbread, corn fritters and fried green tomatoes. And that was just the two of us......! It was delectable. It's so hard to fry white meat and have it stay moist... and they did it here. The mac and cheese was so good we had seconds. The corn bread was just right and the greens were yum. The oxtail was soooo flavorful! The service was very prompt, in fact we had our drinks within a couple minutes of sitting down. Heck, we even got to spend a few minutes with Mama herself. I wanted to try the homemade red velvet cake but I had no room! If you're looking for soul food, you've found it!

Went to Mama's Soul Food this past weekend, Saturday July 26th, with my fiancee and her parents. First off, the wait was rather long because at the last minute a woman ordered a ton of to-go food which backed up the kitchen, we did get a discount for our troubles. That wasnt a problem, we werent in a hurry to go anywhere, were in great company and desperately wanted some soul food!!! The wait was very worth it! The food was great and filling (there was a lot). I had the barbecue pulled pork sandwich which was the best I have personally ever had! The potatoes were succulent and overall the food was great! We will definitely be back for some more soul lovin!

First off, Nice little place. Very friendly service but a little slow, waited a little longer than I should have for drinks and my lunch orders. The meatloaf was very moist and flavorful, black eyed peas very good. Collard greens were amazing but the fried green tomatoes well under seasoned, lacking any kind of salt. I'd come back again if I'm hungry for above average soul food and a friendly restaurant environment.

Tried this place out for dinner take out. Smothered pork chops was very good but menu should read pork chop as in singular at $12.95 seems pricey. The cornbread was tasty but the pieces I got in my dinners were about 1" x 1" square. Wait staff was great

This tastes like Sunday dinner after church at Big Mama's house. Oxtails are good and tender, not salty. Good southern flavor in the greens, no meat in the vegetables. Same for the green beans.

I stopped here for lunch but well after the traditional lunch hour. The place was spotless. My lunch was served cold but it was about 3pm and the Manager stepped in and had my meal warmed and gave me a discount on my tab. The food was terrific. The staff was welcoming and the Manager was really reasonable. I'll be back for more.

Everytime we go shopping we pass this place and can smell the smoker from the road. We finally gave in and stopped. This was some of the best food we have had here. The ribs were incredible. Smoky and the sauce was "lip smacking good". The collards and Mac n cheese were delicious. We highly recommend stopping here. We had the hush puppies. Staff was great. Our waitress Shea was a sweet heart. Was very attentive while we ate. We will be back. A true gem.

I stopped in here 2 days ago for lunch with my husband after eating at a Soul Food place in Orlando that was to die for. Pros: Very nice looking establishment. Clean and decorated nice. (Not your typical hole in the wall joint). Small salad bar included w/your meal featuring fresh fruit. Very personable owner...Mama came around to each table to introduce herself. Con: Fried chicken was salty and not cooked thoroughly. Several pink spots near the bone. One of the servers kept sticking her head up under the food window to talk to the cooks while someone's plate was up. Furthermore she had no hair net. (Mama may want to train/retrain the food handling staff on food safety). Another server seen scratching her hair and wiping sweat from her face with her bare hands while waiting to pick up her customer's plate from the warming station window. It doesn't help that the area where food is plated is visible to the customers. All in all not to bad. Average at best. I will probably give Mama's another try as I want to see her business succeed.

So I've been to this place a couple of times in order to give it a fair review. I think the food is good but for price of $10.95 for the fried chicken meal, I got two small pieces of chickens, 2 sides and corn bread. The portions are very skimpy. I've been to many southern/soul food restaurant and it's always generous in portions. I guess I'm not alone with my opinion because others reviews stated the same complaint. Overall, not worth price for the small pieces of chickens and small sides. Don't go to this place if you're hungry.

Great southern food. I got the fried catfish - was great. The sweet tea is great, too - just like you'd want old-style sweet tea to be! The workers are very friendly and it's a low-key environment. I'll definitely be back.

I once heard it said that good food brings people together, silence to a table and is followed by grand conversation in the world today eating out has become choosing the lesser of the chain restaurant evils. Now I can't say it took me back to my mothers cooking as she is an atrocious cook however from the first bite my boyfriend and I were under the spell of this amazing food. The only reason I give this amazing place four stars is being open for only a month they have to work out all the kinks in the operations but this small inconvenience will not be stopping me from going back again and again.

My grand daughter and I ate there on a whim. We sat on the South wall booth and the kitchen fan noise was terrible. Hard to understand the waitress with her deep Southern accent. My grand daughter had a fried shrimp basket with 8 shrimp and some tasteless frozen fries for a whopping $12.95. I had fried chicken with two little pieces, butter beans, yams and and very small cornbread. Another small cornbread was $.50 each the yams and beans tasted like right out of the can. This might have been good for lunch plate but come on $9.95! Needless to say, "we won't be back!"

Stopped in to try this place for lunch and ended bringing my fiance there for dinner the same day!! If you are craving soul food this is the place to go...everything we tried was awesome...Mac n cheese, candied yams, potato salad (was not frozen), fried catfish, fried chicken, greens, and last but not least the peach cobbler...if you are looking for a five star restaurant with champagne glasses this is not for you but if you want to come down to earth and have some amazing southern cooking this is the place to go hands down...we will be back!

I returned to try the fried chicken. This time, we ate in. Service was slow and not very professional. I thought our waitress was very nice, but when the cook was hollering for her to pick up, I knew that things were not jiving between the front and back of the house. The fried chicken was okay. I found it a little salty, and the different pieces were not all cooked evenly. One wing was very pale and appeared undercooked. The others looked pretty good, but seeing the one pale one made me anxious. My husband tried the burger, which was fine, but they forgot to put the cheese on it. If I return, I'll stick to take out. And I'll probably not order the fried chicken again.
