My partner and I had a great time! The food was nicely presented yet was a bit mild when we ordered medium. So order one step above what you usually order in spiciness. It was a nice dinner though! We shared the samosa appetizer followed by the chicken tikka masala! All of the food was excellent!

I have ordered online for a chicken biryani... which was absolutely crap. No SALT, NO SPICE absolutely...its just color. I have also ordered samosa...which was nightmare.. the oil in it was smelling so pungent...I strongly recommend to think twice on choosing food here. Never again I may try soon. I am really sorry about this.

I've tried several different indian buffets in tallahassee but this is hands down my favorite. I eat lunch here at least once a week. The outside of the building isn't very appealing, but the inside is large and well kept. I've only eaten the buffet here but the service is great. They leave you entire pitchers of water and keep the table clean without hovering. The selection changes everyday, and I love that they offer a wide selection of plates. I try something new each time I visit and 95% of the time I'm very happy! They also have a great dessert bar with orange sorbet, rice pudding, etc.

So I really like Indian food, but the reason why this isn't 4 stars is because their lunch buffet doesn't have paneer! Which is literally my favorite dish. I have been here and to Mayuri. By far, Samrat has way more flavorful food, ESPECIALLY the meat! The chicken here is so delicious, where as Mayuri Has bland chicken. I would prefer to go to Samrat over Mayuri, but like I said they don't serve paneer for the $10 lunch buffet!! I have heard tho that they serve different meals everyday during the buffet, so it might just be that I went on a day when they weren't serving it. I will definitely go back and recommend anyone to go here!

Wife arrived first and the greeter offered her to sit wherever she chose. She apparently chose incorrectly because the busboy working nearby said "no - not that table. This one!" (An adequate two-top in the center aisle, on the seam of the old and new addition. Buffett offerings here are half of the comparably-priced, yet vastly superior, Mayuri AND Persus Indian restaurants in the city. I exclude the good Essence of India Restaurant since they do have an exceptional buffet but only on weekends. Service here is sparse. Wife had to summon busser to request a tea. None offered prior. The good news for Samrat is that improving customer service presents NO cost to them - and can only drive revenue. The food is good, but that is insufficient when choices abound in town.

I don't usually return to a business after suspected food poisoning, but am a million months pregnant and was craving Samrat specifically. I have to say, they cleaned up their restaurant a great deal and the food dramatically improved from my last visit. I like it when I get to see positive change in an old favorite!

Very good lunch buffet! The food is fresh and tasty. We will miss this place when we leave. Only issue, which is not really food related, they were out of tissue in the ladies room. Asked the female owner for tissue....she handed me a dozen of the white restaurant napkins. Thanks but no thanks...not soft enough for my 2 year old's behind.

We got to go last Saturday night. I had called in my order at 6:50 and when I got there 30 minutes later they said it wasn't ready yet abs it would be a few minutes. I waited and waited and at 7:50 I asked the cashier how much longer and she stars it would be another 15 minutes because they were really busy. I reminded them that I had called an hour prior and regardless of how busy the restaurant is inside the take out people are also customers that matter too. five minutes later they finally broght out my food. Aside from the poor service I love this place because the food is amazing. It is by far the BEST Indian food in town! In my opinion, I believe they just need to hire more chefs for the weekend and more servers so they won't hey overwhelmed.

People wanna hate on Samrat because it's "not authentic enough" or because it's "too dingy" or because it "looks haunted," but let me ask you this. Where else in town can you stuff yourself so full of decent - not mind meltingly incredible, but very very good - Indian food that you have to be lifted out of the building with a crane, because you can no longer fit through the door, because you just ate three times your weight in paneer masala and tandoori chicken and garlic naan, FOR NINE FREAKING DOLLARS? That's what I thought.

Samrat is my absolute favorite. I never eat dinner, only the lunch buffet but the food is always superb. Do yourself a favor and go!

Everything on the buffet is always enjoyable. However, I love going at night and ordering from the menu. My husband is a little picky but he loves their chicken tikka masala and cheese naan.

Great indian food. I go to lunch buffet with my friends from time to time. The food is delicious, BUT sometimes I feel it is too spicy.

This is one of my favorite places in Florida. I love it. They make lamb tikka masala. I can't find it anywhere else. Their nan is amazing. I've been going to this place for about twelve years now. It's usually the first place I eat while visiting Tallahassee.

  • Whitney N.

I wouldn't come here unless it was buffet time. The food is good, but for the dinner price I'd probably rather go somewhere else. The buffet price is amazing for what you're getting - endless nan, endless mattar paneer (my fave). They have vegan options on their dinner menu, like tofu mattar.

This is the first restaurant I ate at when I was moving to Tallahassee. I ate chicken curry and loved it. They brought out a tray of sauces that were great to eat with the food. I continued to go here for the lunch buffet with a coworker who also enjoyed Indian food and loved to eat here. I love the flavors of all the food. The buffet dessert, mango pudding and kheer (rice pudding), is amazing especially the mango pudding/ice cream, so make sure to leave some room for the dessert. The food is the best I have ever had from an Indian restaurant. The decor in the restaurant inside and outside is the only downside but I have drove past recently and saw they were renovating the restaurant. I hope to return soon to see the new improvements. The service wasn't bad. They have always treated me right so I have no complaints.

I love the lunchtime buffet here. So far it's the best I have tried in Tallahassee and you can't beat the price!

For someone who has little knowledge of Indian cuisine and wants to sample a variety of dishes Samrat had a lunch buffet that is EXCELLENT. Keep in mind it ends at 2:30 pm. Also note, on Saturdays it is vegetarian only. Definitely try the yogurt curry with their naan.

Note: this rating is only for the lunchtime buffet; I have never eaten here without that condition. This is the second place I've ever tried Indian food from, and there are a few key differences. The selection in the buffet spans about six to seven entrees, a few appetizer and salad-y things, a dessert or two (usually gulab jamun, which is just divine), and naan. There's always tandoori, tikka masala, some vegetarian yogurt dish... it's fucking terrific, really. I always eat more than I should and wish that I hadn't, but I keep going back (even if it hasn't been since June; rather inconvenient hours for their buffet). They let you order off the vaster menu for more money, but fuck all that. It's all there for the taking, and get this: $9! College town dining at its closest to excellent.

OK Indian food, but was very disappointed to arrive and find that they are no longer serving any South Indian food! Really wanted some dosa, but left disappointed. Also, their mango lassis are very sweet (too sweet!) with none of the tangy yogurt taste. Their main dishes are good, but a little bland and generic.

  • Coty S.

This is the best Indian food available in Tallahassee. However, a new place opened called Essense of India, which I have yet to try. Samrat's Garlic Naan is great, as well as most of their curries. Expect to leave with a stomach ache and a lot less money. I do not recommend their lunch buffet; it is like they dump water into the buffet curries to keep them going. They also always run out of Naan on the buffet. Their dinner menu had thicker and more flavorful food. Their Mango Lassi is very sweet and not yogurt bitter like I am used to, but it will get you by if you are craving it in a pinch.

I've never encountered a restaurant so inconsistent. It's like every 6 months they not only bring in a new batch of cooks, but they start with all-new recipes. There is simply no way to predict how spicy the food is going to be. Sometimes each bite is a test of your courage, and others you could feed the sauce to an infant without reservation. We went the other night and put on a two minute skit for the waiter trying to illustrate for him how hot we wanted it (lava), but if there was any pepper in that food none of us could detect it. It's hard to tell if the waiter was more apologetic or defensive, but most of all he was unhelpful. I've had some great meals here, and I've never had anything awful, but my patience is pretty much exhausted.

There are only 2 Indian restaurants in Tallahassee. This is better than the other.its an average Indian restaurant with descent food The prices are low too ... The servers were better than other...

Samrat is the best Indian restaurant in Tallahassee, but that's only because it's the only Indian restaurant in Tallahassee. It's a serviceable restaurant, but it's nothing special. The food is standard Indian cuisine (e.g., naan, vindallo dishes, curry, etc), and it's pretty average. The service is okay, and the atmosphere isn't anything special. There's nothing to dislike about Samrat, but honestly, there isn't a lot to get excited about, either. Like everything else at Samrat, their prices are pretty average.

I would give this a 3.5 if I could. Let me say that I had tried Samrat years ago and it was horrible. However, on a recent lunch visit, the place had cleaned up and the flow for the buffet was much better. The salad was crisp and the onion relish and dressing was good. I did not try the soup because - well, it just did not look good. The Nan bread was wonderful - hot and just a little crunch and a tad chewy. The veggies on Thursday included an okra dish. I am not a fan of okra except as a thickener, and then I throw it away before serving. However, this okra dish (don't know what it was called) was so good that I went back for seconds! All the veggie dishes were wonderful. There was a very mild curry dish and it was a little too meek for my taste. The chicken was moist and flavorful. I can't wait to go back! I went back- and it was still good! I've not been for dinner though - only lunch.

This is by far our favorite Indian food place ever. The vegetable korma is amazing, and the mango lassi is soooo good too. We usually get one as our "dessert to go". They have a lunch buffet too which is a great opportunity to try a lot of different things on the menu at once. The restaurant is a bit small, and can fill up fast (especially at lunch) and also they apparently started charging for extra rice at dinner (but not consistently.... I think it depends on your waiter to be honest). All in all, we have brought all our friends there, and not a single person has ever been disappointed.

this restaurant should have a higher ranking, but it is small and unassuming, so overlooked. easy access off of Apalachee Pkwy. and next door to Springhill Suites (good place to stay). no alcohol served. from an extensive menu i choose goat curry (medium spiced), roti and raita. curry comes with basmati rice. the curry was good, not as spicy/piquant as i would have liked so probably i should have ordered the spicier choice. the raita was quite liqufied with a couple cubes of potato, carrot grating, spices and green onion. it is sometimes made thicker, but it was very tasty spooned over the rice or with dipping the roti. overall, a good meal. service was a little slow, but this is a small family affair and the place was quite busy. prices are very reasonable, and portions are plentiful (i saw a lot of boxes being taken home, and i could not finish roti or rice). my bill with 20% tip was less than $25. i would definitely go there again! happy trails.

This place is fantastic. The food is amazing and the people are ALWAYS friendly. My favorites are Garlic Naan, Veggie Korma, and Malai Kofta. Mmmmm.

Having only been there once, I can say my experience was great. Sigh of relief to find a nice, normal Indian place here in Tallahassee!! The food was really good and not too expensive, and the service was quick and attentive. The place is decorated simply, but with nice traditional touches. Plus, the location is really good (near Earth Fare). Based on other reviews, it looks like Samrat has improved with time. Hopefully they maintain these high standards.

Samrat is very good Indian food. I make it into Tallahassee about every six to eight weeks and this is one of my regular stops. Nearest Indian to me is in Gainesville, FL and Samrat is quite superior to anything there. Service is variable but the food is always excellent.

I'm sort of surprised at the bad rep that Samrat seems to have. Awhile back I was a buffet warrior at this place (Only on Saturday for the vegetarian buffet), and I always had a great meal. The tofu matar and palak chole were amazing. I've eaten there a few times for dinner, and the food was still great, albeit more expensive and with portions I deemed a bit too small. As a poor college student, I tend to find my money better spent at buffets. Still, the place has never done me wrong and I will continue to eat far too much there on Saturdays in the future.

Pretty good. Their channa masala and chicken curry are my favorites. The naan is also quite good. The lunch buffet is a great deal at $9.50. You can call ahead and find out what dishes are on it.

I like it. Not great, but good deal for Tally indian food. Pros: 1) Not too expensive. ($14 for Vindaloo + Garlic Naan). 2) Pretty good food. Cons: 1) Not the prettiest restaurant, inside or out.

Only went once, but the service was horrble. Food was fine but not great... 3* on the food. There aren't that many choices in Tallahassee for Indian, so this might be the best. But the manager/owner should be prepared to do something about a bad dish if he asks, rather than (literally) saying "May be next time."

  • Fahad K.

The restaurant is has excellent food. It is not your everyday restaurant because of prices. I wouldn't mind the high price if they had the apprpriate quantity. One entree would not be enough for 2 people. You end up spending close to 50 bucks for a meal which is quite pricey in this economy .

  • Amber T.

VERY good veggie korma. The rest of the dishes (butter chicken and bindi masala) were "average+". Atmosphere is lacking (1 star). Staff was friendly. Prices were high for the quality and atmosphere ($2 for 2 papadum). There isn't much choice for Indian food in Tally so... I would surely come here again.

Your experience here will depend on what you order! The malai kofta and paneer masala are excellent -- among the best I have had. If you like saucy, creamy Indian dishes, order those. Both dishes are vegetarian (though carnivores can enjoy the masala sauce with either chicken or lamb). My girlfriend and I usually split them and a side of garlic naan. We also order the vegetable samosas to start, and those are solid. That combination has made Samrat one of my favorite Tallahassee restaurants. The vegetable korma, which we order less often, is good too. Unfortunately, attempts to venture beyond the above dishes have been met with disappointment. I recall disliking the palak (i.e. spinach) dishes among others. I do have friends though, who enjoy dishes other than the ones I listed. The service is good and the atmosphere is okay. The place clearly used to be a fast food restaurant with a drive-thru window, and while the decor is not the nicest, it is clean and pleasant enough. The place is well worth checking out.

Its a little on the expensive side for buffet and don'tttt get the regular menu, its way overpriced. Not the best Indian food I had but it'll do.

  • Connie C.

Samrat's cooking is really just average. Not the freshest ingredient, not the most flavorful food. I also had their mango lassi and felt it was just too watery, a good lassi should be nice and thick (come on now, who skimps on the yogurt?)

    (3)
  • JD D.

I agree with Connie. It wasn't terrible, but I found it a bit bland for Indian fare. My real complaint was with the rice, which struck me as too soft and soggy to be basmati.
