I decided to try the new Masa for dinner the same day I had Kikü for lunch because I wanted to have the comparisons fresh in my mind. And because I'm weird, but I digress... First off, I would say Masa's new location across the street from Lake Ella is a vast improvement over its original locale where one had to fight over parking with patrons visiting whatever the old Café Divorcée is called this week. The food was just as good or better than it was at the old location. During this visit we ordered the crab wontons to start off, which were probably the best I've ever had. We then ordered a Dragon Roll and Pad Thai. If each of these is representative of the quality coming out of both the sushi bar and kitchen, then I would say that Masa's has improved upon its already great quality. Honestly, I can't say which I prefer: Masa or Kikü, because both were exceptional in terms of food quality, service, and location's visual appeal. But here is what I would say: Pick Masa if you're going in a group or otherwise in the mood for a larger restaurant with a lot of movement and activity; Pick Kikü if you're on a date or otherwise in the mood for a quiet, more intimate experience with service and quality as good as Masa's. Both, however, are winners.

The new Masa location is great. Food is good as always. The only caveat is that it's become more of a family place rather than a romantic date place. Lots of kids and a lot noisier.

The new location is wonderful! You can hardly tell this was On The Border. Since we were there before 3, we were able to order off the lunch menu (on a Sunday). For starters, we ordered the edamame (which could've used some more salt) and the cheese wontons. Once our food came, we were not disappointed (General Tso's and Beef with Garlic Pepper). What we were disappointed by was our server. Although the restaurant didn't seem busy, we rarely saw him. We ran out of water, after never being asked for a refill (but we were almost finished eating). This will not stop us from coming back, although we will request not to sit in his section.

Masa is an anachronism. As an upscale "Asian Fusion Bistro" they look good, have a fancy menu and can command higher prices. For some of those menu items -- like their incredible sea bass, salt & pepper shrimp, honey-walnut shrimp and seared sea scallop salad -- they deliver. On other items, they fall so flat that you wonder whether founder and legend Lucy Ho has any idea of how many corners are being cut. Can't imagine she would ever allow those disgraces of an egg roll to ever leave that kitchen. The worst I've ever eaten. Clearly frozen from some purveyor, NOT made on-site (and a bad purveyor at that). Earlier this week I watched a documentary on NetFlix called "The Search for General Tso," about the evolution of Chinese restaurants in America. Made me hungry for the iconic and pedestrian General Tso chicken. Ordered it tonight from Masa. Expected Tallahassee's premier "Asian Fusion Bistro" to hit it out of the park. Not so much. Dry, boring, listless - lacking in garlic, spice, flavor and heat. Sigh. However, I will give high marks to their cheese won tons and steamed potstickers (both of which I presume also come from purveyors, but I guess these were just better than those God-awful, lousy, terrible, BAD egg rolls). And their hot & sour soup is pretty good. Seriously, Masa, you should be ashamed for serving those mushy-innerd, skinny-ass egg rolls. Just remove them from your menu. I love egg rolls! I always order them with Chinese food. I JUDGE Chinese restaurants by the quality of their egg rolls. Lucy Ho's egg rolls were legendary! Plump, crispy, filled with fresh, crunchy veggies. What the heck happened?? You should be ashamed! After eating yours at least a dozen times over the past several years, tonight I have vowed never again. All in all, I think Masa is overrated - and disappointing. You'll find much better Chinese food (and sushi) at its sister restaurant, Azu, on Apalachee Parkway, east of Capital Circle. Yes, it's a haul from here and I have no idea why the food would be so much better when they are both owned by the same people, but it is (and, yes, even the egg rolls are better). Bizarre.

The decor and drink selection were fantastic. The sashimi salad was a great selection but would be better served as a lunch or dinner option due it be complex to share amongst a table. I had the lamb with the yellow curry. The lamb was sliced too thin and way overlooked. Our server next asked me how I would like it prepared and that came through in the dish. The bok choy and cabbage with bacon were great sides but the overlooked lamb was some of the worst I have had at a restaurant. We mentioned this to our waitress and she didn't do anything really about it and just laughed it off. My recommendation is to stay with the sushi/sashimi and enjoy the cocktails.

Went here for my birthday and really enjoyed it. Got the edamame with black bean sauce, cream cheese wontons, and a mixed platter of sushi for two. Also had a couple bottles of Sake. The energy was great for a Saturday night!

I was in Tallahassee for my nieces graduation and we forgot one important thing.... to make dinner reservations for a large party of ten for after the graduation!! As you can imagine every decent restaurant was full. I was frantically checking Yelp for a place to eat and I called Masa to see if they had room for a large party ... and luckily they had one big table left!! Sweet .. my yelp app saves the day once again ;) When we arrived we were very happy to see it was not only a nice restaurant, clean, modern but the customer service was great from the moment I made the call. They seated us immediately and had water on the table and were taking our drink orders as soon as everyone was seated. It is a Asian Fusion type place, sushi, tempura, Pad Thai pretty much a little something for everyone. We definitely had a mixed group of young and old so everyone's palate was a little different but Masa had enough choices for the whole group. So everything we ordered was awesome! We tried a little bit of everything. I had the Philly roll (basically a JB roll - Salmon, cream cheese I/O masago) and a spicy tuna hand roll. The Philly roll was good but I have to say the spicy tuna hand roll was off the charts delicious! I also tried a little of everything off of my families plates lol (see pics)! We ordered the sesame chicken - very good, the salmon salad - good but small portion of salmon, the tofu vegetable noodle - really delicious and tons of tofu, chicken teriyaki - really good and nice portion size, the chicken shiitake mushroom - came in a white sauce with veggies - it was good not great and the dragon roll - very good. Overall our experience was great. The waitress was fast and friendly with such a large group of people and the management kept coming by to make sure everything was fine. I would definitely go back to Masa if I am in the Tallahassee area again.

Walked my HANDICAPPED wife to front (dark door), entered only to be informed that lunch was over! How about a larger sign notifying potential customers THAT U ARE CLOSED. We enjoyed our lunch elsewhere. Please correct this PROBLEM!!!

Chose Masa for our anniversary dinner. I had only been at lunch, and assumed that dinner would be slightly more "dress up", but we were both surprised at how casual it was. Secured a reservation through Open Table and were promptly seating at 7:30. Started off with Edamame, and then shared two entrees: Glazed Salmon and Udon Noodle soup (I LOVE the Ramen Noodle Soup--definitely try it if you go--but my wife doesn't eat pork) The salmon was really tasty and very well prepared: not dry at all, and very tender. The vegetables and salad that came with it really responded well to the sweet teriyaki-based glaze. I wasn't a huge fan of the soup, but it was hearty and warm on a cold night. Service was prompt and pretty efficient; our particular server wasn't super-knowledgeable about some of the menu items, but did a great job of taking care of us. I like Masa a lot, and I think they do a really solid job at Japanese and Thai (w/fusion). Definitely go and try.

Unassuming outside, nicely decor'd inside. Has sushi but also has fun entrees as well. Had the lamb shank and it was delicious. 2nd visit I got the shiitake mushroom chicken, and it was a bit bland - had to saracha it up. It is a bit spendy, but there's always pretty people eating there and it's lively. As someone who eats alone sometimes, due to work, wasn't the best place because the bar seating was in the back on benches, isolated from the rest of the restaurant, right in front of the sushi chefs.

This place was great! The server was super friendly and the food was delicious. I came for the first time on a date with my girlfriend and we had a great time. Not to pricy either

I'm shocked by all the bad reviews on this place. I had a really great time! I came here with a friend in the early afternoon on a roadtrip. We had crab-topped sushi that was to die for - their selection was pretty great. Their tempura was good too. They didn't mind the two of us stepping outside with our tea to have smoke. There wasn't really outdoor seating, but there was a ledge (maybe a bench?) with enough room for us to sit and relax under shade. Our waitress was even nice enough to pop outside and let us know our food was ready :] The lighting was light and calm, and everything had that "Americanized Japanese" feel to me. It wasn't bad, just not my type. The food was great, the staff was awesome. I totally recommend this place.

Great atmosphere, great service, and great food. The sushi is great, but don't avoid Masa if you don't want sushi. Masa's filet is the best steak in town by a wide margin. The Chilean sea bass is delicious, as is the duck and every other entree I've had. Dinner prices are on the higher end of the spectrum for Tallahassee, but so is the quality. They also have a lunch menu, which is very reasonably priced.

Full disclosure: My sister used to work here, so I got the food for free, but I loved it, especially the spider roles. Great atmosphere, cool staff, and in the same lot as Cafe Cabernet, so you and your friends can get your grown and sexy on. If you know someone that works here, ask them to bring home some of the experimental dishes for you to try.

The reviews for Masa were hit or miss, so we were a little skeptical when we went. We showed up around 6:30 on the evening of summer graduation and expected a madhouse. The wait was a mere 15-20 minutes for two and we ended up opting for a tiny table by the door to sit immediately. Service was spotty. We saw our waitress once for water/beer and again with the check. Food runner delivered our pad thai & sushi, nobody stopped by for refills. It was a really busy night, though we agreed we got passed over by our server because she assumed we were young and weren't worth the attention to tip ratio. All that said, we'll probably come back. My sushi was good, I had the roll with salmon/tuna - can't remember the name. Boyfriend had pad thai and demolished it and a single roll of sushi left me a weeee bit hungry. Definitely a good place to grab an appetizer as portions aren't enormous. It's across town for us, so we'll probably stick to Azu.

I now vacillate between "best sushi/nigiri in town" places given my most recent visit to Masa's new Lake Ella environs. It's not that the new digs transformed this player into something greater than its previous self but rather that I likely did not pay proper respect to Masa's depth of nigirizushi acumen. First off - not only was Uni available, it was of the freshest color and consistency I've yet to have in TLH. I won't say "better" than Kiku's, but certainly every bit as good. Toro was firm and the rice was expertly formed underneath. Conch was perfectly prepared. The rest of the family all enjoyed their plates (Pad Thai for the wife, stir-fried for the kiddos) but I knew who was experiencing the best deal at the table! Masa's new location (directly across from Lake Ella in the old Tallahassee Motor Lodge parking lot) is leagues more well appointed than the warehouse it shared with Cafe Divorcee. Truly an exceptional experience.

Went there for dinner and had the braised beef pan nang. The sauce was spicy and delishus. I had sweet potatoe fries and cabbage as my sides. Not one morsel was wasted. This place had fair service the waitress seemed to not have solid answers but we got thru the meal and it well lives up to the hype.

The food at Masa is very good. Thought the sushi was average. I had the curry which was fantastic. Asked for it Thai hot and it made me cry- which is the way I like it. Sushi was ok, but wasn't the best I've ever had. Also, their menu could use some descriptions on some thugs because it is very generic. I felt like I asked the server 100 questions because the menu didn't offer any info or descriptions for items. I'd go back to order hot items, sushi probably not.

Classy spot. The new location is very nice and more spacious. The atmosphere is relaxing and intimate. The waitress was very timely and helpful with the menu. Great sushi! I ordered the volcano roll and it was very delicious. My only disappointment is that I didn't order two because I wasn't all the way full. I will definitely return again

Masa was pretty decent. The atmosphere was nice, but very loud, as it was super crowded for a Tuesday night. We ordered the pan fried pot stickers as an appetizer, which I absolutely LOVED and could have eaten 15 of! My husband ordered a cone-shaped sushi roll wrapped in seaweed with a variety of fresh fish inside which we both raved about, and my Tuna Lover's sushi roll (wrapped in rice) was also very tasty. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal fell flat. We didn't care for their house salad and the fried rice was probably the most bland and horrible I've ever had. I also had a difficult time choosing off of the massive menu of entrees and signature dishes and ended up deferring to our waitress to choose something for me after telling her the dishes I was torn between. Unfortunately, I wasn't crazy about the final selection, and I can't even remember what it was called because of the amount of items on the menu. I will say that I'd like to give them another chance because we did very much enjoy the sushi, pot stickers, and beer.

Wow amazing sushi. We started out with edamame with a black bean sauce. Very tasty. We ordered the veggie spider, red dragon, and the seared yellow tail roll. The veggies were nice and crispy in the spider. The red dragon comes with tempura shrimp and tuna in top. Very well done. The seared yellow tail was equally good. Only wish I had more room to try more. Guess I will have to come back. The service was tip top and they were very efficient which says a lot considering how busy the place was.

Decided to try this place out while in town for work. I did not assume anything amazing but the food was so bland and just overall not impressive. The one star is for the food arriving warm considering the two and a half hour wait time for delivery. Never again.

Don't let the atmosphere fool you, the food is far from good. I have been multiple times to get a tuna and every time I am disappointed. It's nearly in edible and the sushi is never fresh. Way too overpriced for lackluster sushi. Don't waste your time.

I grew up eating at this restaurant and its sister restaurants. From grandma Lucy Ho's past restaurant on Apalachee Parkway to her past Killearn location, Shaun Lee has been like family to my family. So of course, we were always patrons of his restaurant that he co-owned, Masa. Masa is an Asian fusion restaurant, a far cry from what was served in Lucy's old restaurants. Shaun put a modern spin on Asian fusion cuisine, which was and still is a rare find in the small city of Tallahassee. It had been a good year since I'd been to Masa. The interior smelled a little off but I wasn't perturbed. It's just the smell of small town. We were seated at our usual corner large table since we had six people for lunch Saturday. My parents were already seated and had ordered a pot of green tea. They asked for an additional pot when they realized the small pots of green tea would not be enough. Each pot later came out to be $3. We examined the menu before putting in our usual orders, the Fried Calamari Masa Style ($8) and the Sashimi Appetizer platter ($12). The Fried Calamari was a small bowl of salad but allowed for each of us to have a long strip of thickly but fragrantly breaded and fried calamari. The salad dressing was sweet and sour and complemented the red peppers and romaine lettuce well. I'm sure most people aren't weird like me, but I love when the vegetables get a little soggy and not as crisp from the sauce, because that was what happened. The sashimi came with 3 slices of salmon, 3 slices of tuna, and 3 slices of some sort of white fish that I'm not 100% able to identify. The fish was pretty fresh, just wish there was more, but I was surprised an appetizer came with so many pieces of sashimi. We decided to go "American" and each order our own dishes, but share what we had among each other. We ordered entrees ($10): Honey Walnut Shrimp Thai Coconut Curry (with chicken) Pork Cutlet Pineapple Tenderloin Tips Bulgogi Rice Bowl Whitefish (with Shiitake Mushroom) Each dish is heavily flavored but quite delicious. I ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp which came with at least 8 fried shrimp, and they were not small. I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality for $10. The Bulgogi rice was not bad but not really authentic as the Korean waitress claimed. The Pork Cutlet was fried to crispy perfection and the Whitefish was my favorite, although the mushrooms were a little too salty. The tenderloin tips were also flavored heavily but were super yummy. I forget that the cost of living is so much lower in Tallahassee so for the prices at Masa, you get hearty and quality portions of delicious food. Be sure to give it a try before they move the location down the street! Rumor has it, they will be opening a Korean BBQ in this store location while moving their new Masa further down Monroe St.

My pal and I sat at the bar and enjoyed delicious meals served by a delightful team member whose main job was as a mixologist. I had enjoyed Lucy Ho's Masa Restaurant prior to its recent relocation. Very nice former Mexican spot has been refreshed nicely. I've eaten lunch twice here. One of my favorites, Masa will compete with neighboring Asian favorite Siam Sushi. A great place too.

I'm starting to think the weird parking is just a Tallahassee problem. I think they have valet service Monday-Saturday, but I will be honest I would rather just park myself and not have to worry about tipping someone else. A good parking situation can really make or break my first impression of a restaurant so I was a little iffy when I saw the small (and full) lot right outside the doors. Luckily for me once I was inside I was much more impressed. I had booked a reservation on OpenTable (one of the FEW Tallahassee restaurants that utilizes this app) and was pleased to find that we were even given a table in the front of the restaurant a little tucked away from the rest of the patrons. The service was quick, the seating spacious, and the ambiance of the restaurant felt both classy and cozy at the same time. Our waiter, Rivers, was 60/40. When he was smiling or offering advice it was extremely helpful, but another large chunk of the time he spent avoiding eye contact and being very short (which I did not appreciate - especially after being spoiled by the quality of service at Nefertari's last week). One of our guests ordered the calamari and edamame for appetizers. The calamari was top notch and wonderfully breaded. I ordered the Thai Coconut Curry with shrimp and a side of rice and a glass of White Zinfandel to go along with it. The curry dish was creamy, fresh, and delicious while the wine was soft and sweet (as I love!). Some of the other crowd pleasers at the table were the tuna steak, Tom Yum soup, some beef dish wrapped in asparagus and an assortment of sushi. The portion sizes were favorable and everything looked amazing. I was also impressed with how handy they were with the amount of meat each person was given (there was definitely no shortage of shrimp in my dish or chicken in the Tom Yum soup). Overall the food was definitely the best part (as it should be) and will be the main reason that I suggest people visit Masa. The menu has an almost overwhelming amount of options though, so don't be afraid to ask your waiter for help (even if they look a little grumpy).

So disappointed! I've heard great things about this place, but our lunch experience today was terrible. Service was poor, spotty and slow. The food we ordered was unremarkable at best and inedible at worst. My General Tso's Chicken lunch box had tiny portions of noodles and rice. The rice was burned beyond eating. The noodles had no flavor. The chicken was undercooked. The sushi ordered by my friends was (again) small and underwhelming. And they charged significantly more than competitors. Topped off, the A/C blew so hard at us the entire time that we were uncomfortably cold and had trouble holding on to napkins. Overall, the worst experience I've had at a Tallahassee restaurant. Note: menu says soup $1.50, but they managed to charge my friend $3. Buyer beware.

This kills me. Not too many weeks ago I wrote an update on Masa, praising their incredible quality and excellent service. It seems I may have been a bit premature. Last night my wife and I returned with friends to celebrate. I was excited to order the exact same dish I had before, the Sashimi Deluxe platter with an addition of Unagi. This is an expensive dish, but I didn't mind after what I was served on our last visit. Oh dear... It seems my last visit may have been a fluke. The quality of their fish had dropped remarkably since then. Tonight's food was cheap, bland and watery, and I haven't even gotten to the worst part. The amount was far less than the time before, although they had added a tremendous amount of garnish to make the presentation look nice. In normal cheap fashion they included a much larger amount of Escolar, a cheap fish that would be considered an insult to serve in Japan but American restaurants serve it because most American's don't know they are getting junk. Still... I haven't reached the worst part. Unagi, for those who do not know, is eel served with a light drizzle of eel sauce. It is baked usually covered in aluminum foil and then opened to brown. My Unagi however was swimming in the sauce and black as tar. Now we knew what that horrible smell was that came from the kitchen moments before we were served. My first bite told me why they were so generous with the sauce. The "chef" had burned the eel to death and tried to soften the black charcoal by soaking it in eel sauce. It was horrible, and incredibly wrong for any restaurant to try and pass this off as food to their customer, let alone a customer who was already paying a higher than usual price for dinner. Sadly the waiter played it off, but took the dish back and returned in seconds with a replacement, which was equally burned and soaked in sauce. Eel is expensive and they were obviously not wanting to eat their mistake, so they were letting me. I politely explained that unagi is not supposed to be soaked in sauce, but is only supposed to be complimented by a small drizzle. The waiter really didn't care and asked if I would rather have something else, which was at least the right thing to do. I passed on getting any additional bad sushi, without saying that. When our bill came they had graciously deducted a whole dollar and twenty cents from my bill. Seriously? So... what have I learned? On average the food is poor quality and the service is right in line with the food. Even when Masa does an extremely poor job you will never see any sign of management and you will only receive a pathetic attempt to correct the situation. Those are not qualities I look for in restaurants. In my opinion Masa has become lazy and is riding off a reputation they no longer deserve. They are now officially off my list.

My girlfriend and I came here on a date. We dressed casually but trust me it was a date. I have become a bit of a sushi snob recently, and it has not been easy on my bank account. The food here was good, nothing extremely special though. The nigiri was tasty but the fish lacked flavor. I had the yellow tail and the toro. Yet the sushi was fresh and sat well. Overall it is a 4 because none of the rolls blew me away. The edamamae and black bean sauce was a great starter.

I am in Tallahassee for work this week and a friend recommended that I try Masa. When I pulled up at the restaurant it looked like it was part of a run down strip mall. Living in tampa I have learned not to judge things like that, and I was happy when I opened the door and the interior of the restaurant was clean and tastefully decorated. All of the wait staff seemed really young and the one next to my table was chatting with one of her friends who was dining about spring break towns. I am not so used to college towns but it was also nice to hear some southern accents again. The sushi menu is large like a paper placemat and you can mark which appetizers and rolls you want. I started off with the avocado and crabmeat salad appetizer. It. Was. Amazing. And also big enough to be a meal in itself. There was a big portion of fresh lump crab, spring mix greens, and sliced avocado. The ginger dressing was light and didn't overpower the rest. I absolutely loved it. Needless to say when I got my two sushi rolls I was no longer very hungry. My favorite of the two was the mango tango. It was a crab and cream cheese roll with mango and cooked tuna piled on top. The cooked tuna was unique and in a very tasty almost teriyaki sauce. Very fresh. My second roll was the vegetarian spider roll. Instead of soft shell crab it had tempura vegetables. There was also cream cheese, lettuce, and a topping of eel sauce and spicy sauce. My problem with this roll was that the vegetable was overwhelmingly fried onions. There are few (veggie) things I don't like but fried onions are at the top. Overall this was a great dining experience and I'd definitely go back and try other rolls if I'm in the area again.

Pros- Great Entrees, good sushi, relaxed atmosphere, outstanding service, professional staff, sushi prices are lower than I would have expected for a premium product. Cons- Mismatching furniture, too many tables in such a small restaurant, TV above the raw bar was kind of distracting(...maybe I'm just difficult? lol) Compliments to the cheff and the waiter who recommended my dish!

This use to be my favorite restaurant. The last couple of times I've gone the food hasn't been all that great. I always get the combination fried rice. They will tweek it for you which is a plus. However, the last time the food smelled funny and tasted burnt. One of the service people said the chop sticks had gone bad and was the problem. I'm not believing that. I asked for it to be redone without the beef. It was much better. The beef smelled funny. I will stay away for awhile hopeful the food will get better.

I had Teriyaki Chicken for lunch in this place. OMG Chicken is so soft I never that much soft chicken in any restaurant. I will definitely recommend this place. And I also had Teriyaki Chicken roll sushi it is also so good. Nice ambiance and parking is available at this place.

I know Masa is the go-to Asian fusion restaurant in town for a lot of people from locals to students to tourists. I think the reason why this place is doing so well is the location and interior decor/ambiance truthfully because the food at least to me isn't all that special and their isn't anything special to me on the menu. Its your typical Asian fusion restaurant when you look at the menu. The food is okay. Not bad, but nothing special. If I go to an Asian restaurant whether it be korean, chinese, japanese, etc. I'm the person who ordered something that I can not make at home, something they make better than me, or something that I know takes a lot of time and materials to make and I really don't want to at the time (aka sushi). Basically from the menu here that means sushi. The sushi was eh, okay. But hey, its Tallahassee right? Cant be picky with sushi, just be happy if you can go somewhere and don't get sick/ food poisoning while eating raw fish. This place is identical to Azu (same owner) but the reason why I would rather drive 30 minutes to Azu is really because I feel the sushi rice/fish portion, plating/presentation, tightness of rolling (roll dosent fall apart) is slightly better in addition to I like the sushi choices at Azu better. That and I don't like how packed it can get in Masa. I'm weird but I like quiet restaurants. Whenever I go to Azu its relatively quiet and peaceful (I only go for lunch though, not dinner or sunday). I think also both places get their fish from southern seafood (I keep seeing those trucks in front of both places- but I could be wrong). Oh, and I think Masa has valet parking but I usually just park my car myself because I always find a spot out front whenever I go. Overall, good typical asian fusion restaurant, just nothing special. Only reason I really prefer Azu over Masa is because its quieter and I like the sushi selections better at Azu which is really the only reason I go to either restaurants since I can make everything else myself at home for cheaper (newly college grad budget- cut me some slack lol) and more specific to my taste buds.

The food and service were pleasant. Reasonably priced with a comfortable atmosphere for either dinner or lunch. I usually get the General Tso's chicken, which is always very good, a touch of sweet and spicy. The chicken corn soup is always a good appetizer along with the edamame with spicy black bean sauce.

My daughter frequents this restaurant often and she could not wait to bring me here. The inside is very pretty, modern sleek design, perfect lighting and sound and a good size dining area. From the moment we sat down, our server was excellent. She got our drinks quickly, and she went over some specials. She was terrific about asking if we were allergic to any seafood etc... We started with edamame and wontons, oh gee the crab and cheese wontons were insane, they were so good. We then ordered some specialty rolls and shared. I asked the waitress if they could make them with soy paper instead of see weed. Not an issue at all. My favorite roll was the crunchy tuna roll, All the rolls were excellent. The quality of the fish was superb. I must say, we thoroughly enjoyed our delicious dinner and I can not wait to go back next time I am in town. If you want great quality sushi, excellent service, in a very nice atmosphere, check this place out. The best in all of Tally, without a doubt.

Really nice place with a stripped down interiors of black and whatever muted colors and with an open kitchen. Lots of sharp looking people populating the dining area, and great service. The menu was full of creative dishes in the "Asian fusion" genre of cuisine. My wife and son loved their meals and rave about the place. These are typically five-star indicators for me except for one thing...I didn't really enjoy my food. I had the grilled chicken teriyaki, which looked great on the menu. It had a nice flavor of both grilled meat and of teriyaki marinade, but both flavors were lost shortly after I started eating it. It's a mystery why that happens, maybe the flavor goes away when the temperature of the food cools, I don't really know. I just know it didn't satisfy. Just because the place didn't connect with me, doesn't mean you shouldn't go here. After all my wife, my son, and all those sharp looking people can't all be wrong.

I was a little hesitant to try Masa after reading mixed reviews. I'm SO GLAD we did! The food was delicious -- Asian with a fresh twist. We had tofu with Bok Choy and Crispy Mango Beef. AMAZING. The spicy black bean sauce for edamame dipping?? YUMMM. I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are about. Service was excellent, the food was excellent, the decor is excellent.

Always delicious, love the red dragon and dirty harry, but yup definitely would be better if it was cheaper.

Sushi is pretty good, but I probably wouldn't go back. I think it's overpriced, $6 for like 6 CA rolls is a bit much. Also go the red dragon roll, which was also pretty good, but $13. I think I would try somewhere else before I come back, but it was pretty decent.

I didn't hate this place. I guess you just have to have good timing on when to come. One late Thursday night, must have been bad timing. One friend was inside holding our table for dear life as the rest of our party played bumper cars trying to find a parking lot. The possibility of getting towed slimmed our initial party of 7 down to 4. Place is somewhat cramped. It just has that feeling like one extra chair can't fit anywhere, but beautiful design and helpful servers. Dinner started with Philadelphia Cream Cheese Wonton (they were good but they taste about the same everywhere) and Miso Soup (ditto on the soup). Now the table went around tasting a bit of everything. Jumbo Shrimp Pasta with Green Curry (nice dish, but it's feels like green dyed curry), Thai Coconut Curry Chicken (LOVE IT -wish I ordered it), Grilled Garlic Sesame Glazed Salmon (well seasoned just a little dry for my taste), and Stir-Fried Trio with Broccoli (it was an okay dish) I love sushi, but not a a guru. So it first has to look good then or course taste good. I can't remember what we had but EVERYTHING was all very good. I found the cost didn't match the quality of food serve. But this place easily beats out Japanica!

Hands down, the best sushi in Tallahassee. While I lived here during college, we would frequent this place. Definitely recommend it to anyone in the area searching for sushi! Make sure you try the cream cheese rangoons and the volcano roll! You won't be disappointed.

I really like this place. I have only eaten the beef fried rice because its REALLY good and you get a ton of it for $11. The cream cheese rangoons are also to die for! One complaint-please give the servers something to do. They tend to congregate around the counter and stare at you.

We came here on the recommendation of the concierge at the Best Western Hotel, and what a great recommendation it was! The food was great, especially the General Tso's Chicken-- chicken was cooked perfectly and they managed to keep the outside nice and crispy. While the sushi wasn't the best I've ever had, it was very good especially considering it's in Tallahassee. Service was excellent, but we also came on the earlier side of dinner, so I can't say how they would do when really busy.

Delicious! Good food and a nice venue for events. I threw a friend's bachelorette dinner here in their private "room" (really a separated corner) and it was great atmosphere and the service was great. The parking lot fills up quickly and you're stuck trying to find parking on the street or going with the valet. Carpool if you can!

Hip environment, recently went and was a bit disappointed. all the meals were average. Ordered the duck and it was dry not very tasty. The cream cheese and crab wontons were the bomb and so was the Asparagus Beef Maki. Next time I go I'm probably sticking to sushi or the previously stated. Tally is changing and they need to keep up. Go Noles!

This place is pretty good for Japanese food too! Their sushi is good and prepared with quality ingredients and their kitchen food is good-- i've had their duck and it's pretty good! So is their curry :)

Masa gets two stars only because it's nicely decorated, peaceful, and at least tries to put on the facade of upscale dining. We've only been here once for sushi and that was enough. It was overpriced. We normally spend about $70 for appetizers and sushi and leave with leftovers. Here, we didn't even get appetizers and left with nothing. The rolls have sprouts and strange things stuck into them in some failed effort at fusion cuisine. Chefs were really slow at making the sushi.

Ordered mixed vegetables and brown rice. The rice was cold and had maybe been sitting around for hours. The 'mixed' vegetables consisted of red onion, yellow onion, green onion, and two broccoli florets - a cheap mix. The edamame appetizer was overcooked, and turned so stringy it was impossible to eat. Service was not good - I ordered a side of broccoli (after seeing the weak vegetable medley), but the broccoli never came. I made a second dinner when I got home - that's how bad it was. Siam Sushi or Sakura has much better food (although the atmosphere is not as nice).

A colleague and I were travelling in Tallahassee from Jax. She used to work at this place, and highly recommended it. I had hot and sour soup,..must say it was the best I have had! Ordered 4 different sushi rolls,...the dragon roll was phenominal. Sushi was VERY fresh. She explained that they do not reuse on days sushi the next day, it all goes home with employees. Kind of trendy place, offeres asian and asian fusion. A bit pricey, but worth it for a once in a while lunch treat!

It's a bit pricey but all in all it is a solid restaurant. I like it but always seem to order the 'Dirty Harry roll' (I know I know it sounds REALLY disgusting but I suppose they had to call it SOMETHING... It's a very pretty place, warm & inviting and the people watching, second to none!

I'm not into the whole sushi thing. I'm not saying sushi is nasty, but I honestly think most of it is kind of bland. I would surmise that it's American surge in popularity is due more to the exotic nature of eating a foreign food and the American obsession with being on the cutting edge of culture. And with that, I have never eaten a piece of sushi from Masa. Instead I venture into there menu of hot dishes and order something most people overlook: Beef Bulgogi. As far as I can tell this is the only place in Tallahassee where you can get a big, hot steaming bowl of Bulgogi, and according to my Dad, who did 2 years in Korea during the 80's, it's pretty spot on to the real thing. Other than that, the Tempura dishes are good, and I agree that the pot stickers and lettuce wraps are good warmups. Me and my wife normally order a bottle of plum wine to wash it all down. Can't say I have complaints about this place at all.

Had a very fun dinner here with my hubby, his bro, and his bro's lovely fiancee. The sushi rolls were very yummy, we had a mango/tuna salad that was spicily fantastic (it doesn't appear on the online menu, but highly highly recommended if they have it), we also had a crab salad that was good, my bro-in-law had the tropical fruit sweet and sour chicken, which was a lot of food and quite decent. Can't recommend the sashimi -- the only sashimi I ordered was sweet shrimp, and it was inedible, definitely old. We had it taken off our bill very easily and pleasantly. As far as drinks, we got a high end glass of sake to share, and there was a lot -- they say champagne glass, but it was a large glass filled to the brim. Also, we had a bottle of unfiltered sake, and it wasn't as sweet/fruity as I'm used to those being, so I probably wouldn't get that again there. The decoration is really fun, esp considering from the outside it looks like the place is in a warehouse. You need a reservation to get seated at a table right away -- we got seated at the sushi bar, no reservation, immediately. My favorite place in Tallahassee to date. :)

Masa is my favorite restaurant in Tallahassee. I don't live there, but visit this restaurant every time I'm in town. The food is good and priced reasonably. I've never had an issue with service either. I would suggest this place for anyone who wants a nice low key restaurant. And if you want REAL crab ragoon, go here. Best I've ever had.

Not a huge fan of their sushi, very little bang for your buck. But the hot and sour soup is amazing! Plus only 3 dollars. I come back for that and their calamari.

Don't get me wrong. Masa is good food. It's just not great food. And the value to dollar ratio is highly skewed towards lunch. That said, Masa is a great looking restaurant if on the smallish side. I love going here with co-workers or friends at lunch time. It can be hard to justify the prices for dinner since I think there are other places with more ambience and food for the money. Still, I've never left feeling like I didn't want to eat what I ordered. I just haven't been wowed by the food for a long time.

Delish. It's in a tiny strip mall, beyond the central business district. So don't look for quaint surroundings. But inside, it's stylish and fun. I wish I had more of an appetite when I visited, because there were tons of things (not just Japanese... I think it's an Asian fusion place) I would have tried. But I settled on two very enjoyable rolls. Service was pleasant, and quick at the sushi bar, even though the place was hopping.

The service was very good. I tried their Volcano Roll (sushi). It was good, but the presentation was lacking. I got teriyaki chicken. The meat was dry. Rice was OK. I have had other things here and they have been great. Guess it depends on the day and the meal.

I give this place 4 stars easily. It would have been 5 but the service was kind of slow and could have been a smidge better. I was taken here on a business trip for some late night dinner. Wonderful decor although it sits at the end of a shopping strip mall. But it is the end business so that makes it a little better. Being an out of towner in this friendly town, I felt very comfortable in this place not only with the waitstaff but also the other customers. Sure is a friendly southern town! The food and wine were both excellent. Sushi was some of the best that I have ever had.

I really didn't care for Masa, even after eating there three or four times. The sushi rice always felt kind of hard/stale, and the rolls in general didn't have much flavor. Each piece tended to be huge and a bit crumbly. I had better luck with their "fusion" P.F. Chang's type foods (like the lettuce wraps), but even they weren't super special in my book. To be perfectly honest, I prefer Sakura up the road, even though it took me a year longer to try it out.

The restaurant is a cool, hip, modern looking place and has a nice ambiance. Another great thing is you can dress up or bum it and still feel comfortable. The food is so good. I would recommend the volcano roll or the edamame with the spicy black bean sauce for starters. As far as entrees go I haven't been disappointed yet, I've gotten the pineapple fried rice, the triple seafood special, the honey walnut shrimp, and the asparagus tenderloin meal, all of which were amazing!! The deserts are awesome too, I've tried the fried cheese cake+ice-cream (my personal favorite), the green tea creme brulee, and the sherbet AGAIN they were all good. The service is also great! The only thing is if you're not in a larger group you are most likely going to be sitting less then a foot away from the table next to you. Also, the waiting area is a battlefield, getting through the door and receiving a chance to talk to the hostesses is a bit of a challenge because the waiting area is slim to none and the place is obviously very popular! Other than that I love MASA.

My favorite place for Sushi and Japanese. My girlfriends and I meet here for lunch once a month and I usually have the Chirashi or sashimi salad, both very good. The namesake, Masa, is at the other restaurant AZU which is just as good but not as central. When available, the broiled Squid is very good. Also check to see if they have Grouper Cheeks, another delicious appetizer or meal if ordered with rice. Nice atmosphere.

I got the impression sushi isn't necessarily their specialty here -- there were quite a few interesting, asian fusion-y dishes on the menu -- but that's what I wanted. My rolls were edible but I was far from impressed, especially considering the price tag. The sushi rice was straight-up hard, like it had been sitting out for too long. Service is decent and it's pretty inside, but not nearly as attractive and delicious as the comparably priced Sakura right up the road. The highlight of the experience were the huge pockets of melty cream cheese and onion, sans the usual imitation crab (why even bother?), in the "cream cheese wonton" appetizer. O take-out food of my uncultured midwestern youth! How many years of my life I have lost for thee!

Okay so I was hungry after working all day in Tallahassee....so I was driving around aimlessly looking for a Sushi place. I drove past Masa and was kinda scared of the outside appearance so I didn't stop, but as I kept going I saw nothing else. So I turned around and pulled into their parking lot at which time I noticed they were PACKED!! This was a good sign that the food must be good. So when I went inside, it was nicely decorated with dim lighting. I decided to place a takeout order and the server was really friendly. I got the Red Dragon Roll, Mexican Roll and some fried Dumplings. The food was well packaged and pretty tasty. Ingredients were fresh and I liked how they had a large selection of rolls. Definently one of the happening places in Tallahassee.

It's definitely a somewhat trendy place for Tallahassee. The inside is decorated with dim lighting, candles and a fresh, Asian-fusion vibe. We went on a weekday evening and the place was crowded. There is parking in the front but it was pretty full. There were quite a few tables there that looked like they were celebrating things like birthdays. The service is very attentive. The menu has a good variety. We tried a variety of sushi and everything tasted good. The sushi rolls I ate were better than the sashimi though.

I had the miso glazed chilean seabass, and have to say it was the worst meal I've had during my 2 months in Tallahassee. The seabass was stringy with the consistency of skate wings. The miso glaze was so sweet, it tasted more like a Karo syrup glaze. It was overly salty, and to be quite honest, inedible. When I told the waitress it was "horrible" she said "I'm sorry you didn't like that" I WILL NEVER RETURN HERE.

I liked this place a lot. The interior is beautiful. I looove the paintings on the walls. Next time I'll inquire about where I can buy! The sushi was really good! I will definitely go back soon. Nice ambiance, great all around.
