If you like dives, you're going to love this place. If you don't, you should try El Viroleno! The place is nearly impossible to find if you only have an address, so make sure you take note of the insider clues here on Yelp! Look for the tattoo parlour and park around back. Once you're in, the staff will take good care of you. Our take-out orders placed at the counter took a long time but everyone was very friendly, and the authentic food at reasonable prices has made this spot worth coming back to! The pupusas with squash blossoms were so unusual, yet really delicate and delicious--quite wonderful. And once you're familiar with the menu, if you need takeout, definitely call ahead. :-)

LOVED this hole in the wall. Pupusas are awesome! Best food in the state- seriously amazing. Everyone in our party of 4 loved it. Can't wait to come back to Tallahassee to eat here again!

I went to El Viroleno for lunch and really enjoyed the traditional Salvadoran pupusa con frijoles and and pan con pollo! The chips were crispy and fresh, the salsa was rich and fresh, the cabbage was spicy and delicious! The pupusa and tortillas were so hot we couldn't touch them at first! The chicken sandwich was very delicious and I would go back here in a heartbeat. (Don't mind the storefront. This is truly eating where the locals eat).

This place is the bomb. I've only discovered 3 authentic Latin food places in Tallahassee. This is one of them. The Women that run this place are all very friendly and attentive. I get the queso/loroco pupusas with some rice, beans, yuca, and maduros.

I find every excuse I can to come here. It's an awesome place from a mom and daughter team. Super modest ambience, and what you may think of as a lack in looks they make up in taste. Food is all made fresh and is super delicious! As a vegetarian I only order sides from them but it makes a well-priced meal that fills me up and some every time. Be sure to get their guacamole - best I've ever had. Without a doubt one of my top spots in Tallahassee.

A couple of $2 Papusas and Platanos Fritos with beans and cream equals Heaven! An explosion of flavor with every bite..

Im not one to write a review but I really like this place and would like them to be around for awhile. I have been to El V several times and have never had a bad meal. This is some of the most authentic ethnic food you can get in tally, home of bad "Mexican" and Chinese buffets. The tacos, burritos and fajitas are all excellent, freshly prepared and we'll flavored. The home made salsa and queso are on point as we'll as they're house made tortilla chips. But really it's all about the pupusas. Whatever combination you get, you won't be disappointed. For those who don't know pupusas are like arepas, a stuffed and grilled corn (masa) dough with cheese etc... A perfect lunch with they're beans and rice which are also the best in tally. Please support this place, they are truly worth keeping around.

No, this place does not appear pretty or even mildly safe. It does, however, play host to some wonderful food. So far I have only tried a few pupusas, and the pork one is truly life-altering. The chicken is okay and the cheese is rather bland, but the pork is a wonderfully salty and savory blend of spices and pork inside a big pupusa. As a girl with a big appetite, I happily wolfed down my three pupusas and slipped into a food coma (for less than five bucks!) A guy might want four. I am very excited to try the rest of their menu and will update here as I do! Only negative about this place is that you may want to brush up on your Spanish. The woman working the register when I was there was struggling to communicate and I felt rather bad. All in all, absolutely delicious, varied menu that I can't wait to explore. Update: I went back and tried the fried plantains twice and the fried yuca. The fried plantains were delicious (although a little greasy) the first time, but a bit too sweet for me the second time. I do wish they gave you another plantain's worth- I felt that the portion size was a bit small. The yuca was delicious- it tastes like a creamier french fry. Wonderfully crunchy- and it was served with some sort of slaw and delicious jerky!

Sometimes you just want a mini staycation. A restaurant that when you walk in you are transported somewhere and treated to meal that represents the best of that locale. Today I took a trip to El Salvador. Not a tourist spot, but a friends Momma's house. Where refried beans are delivered from 50 lbs. sacks of dried beans prepared in the kitchen and touched by the magic that only DNA delivers. Generations of tradition honed with skill and practice. This is what you will find in every dish at El Viroleno. Papusas cooked to perfection and served with a heavenly slaw (Curtido) and a smooth, silky salsa that works in harmony with both flavor and texture. This is not firey food that scorches, it is balance. Full-on flavor. Even the chips and salsa delivered as an appetizer are great. Thin, crispy tortillas, salty with smooth, tasty salsa. I had to force myself to limit enough to stay hungry for the main meal. My companions chimichanga was delivered freshly made, hotter than blazes and finished with lettuce and avocado. We traded bites and I found it to be delicious. The refried beans and rice that finished the plate were fantastic. Each delightful on its own. I could make a meal of just the rice and beans. I did not ask if the beans were vegetarian or not, but my palate detected lard, so ask if this is an issue. They carry Jarritos and colas as well as select bottled beer. El Salvadoran food might just be my new favorite Latin Cuisine, as each country and Island and region is distinctively different and each a delight.

Pupusas!!! I have found a new comfort food. Shrimp, Chicharon, and one I let the server pick (Revueltas) were all amazing. Then the Pastelitos Salvadoreños (chicken) - yum, quite a take on the empanadas I am used to when living in Miami (typically Cuban style there). I sent on to the Carne (beef) burritos. Loved the little pocket of cheese in there. Wife got the same, but with chicken. Kids ordered one beef burrito and one steak quesadilla - all parties enjoyed the food. Service was good, but not amazing. She seemed a little impatient with our needing to take time to review the menu and was hard to find when we needed a box (another server saw us sitting there and came to see if there was anything else we needed. All in all, a great time that we will be happy to come back for.

D-i-v-e, just the way it ought to be! Very authentic El Salvadoran cuisine and atmosphere. Soccer on the tube, mix and match decor, and wonderful service and food! The papusas were delicious; we had the pork, pork and beans, and chicken. The masa cakes were finished with curtido, a cabbage slaw in a vinegary brine, and were amazing! The pork tacos were simplistic with cilantro and raw onion served on corn tortillas....my favorite! Can't wait to get back!!!!!!
(4)Natalie O.
One word... pupusa! They are the best I've had. I had 3 (all with cheese of course)... shrimp, loroco, and chicharron. Not sure which was my favorite because they are all delicious, served piping hot and fresh. They bring you a big jug of pickled cabbage and hot sauce. Put those both on the pupusas, you won't be sorry. The only negative was the cleanliness... the windowsills were pretty nasty, torn up seats and dirty highchairs. If my son was still high-chair age, I would have given that thing a proper scrub down.
(4)Nick H.
Great food! The pupusas are awesome! The place is the definition of "hole in the wall". Would definitely go back.

I'm not going to subtract a star for the atmosphere or environment because it adds to the charm of the restaurant. Though, the environment scared my friend so that I had to persuade, almost coerse him to park and go inside for diner. We read the other reviews, so I was prepared for the "unsavory" storefront....and so was he...until he actually SAW it. SERVICE was fast, informative and friendly. The food came quickly and the server offered me other options (Cabbage, special hot sauce, beans and rice) to accompany my pupusas. Three come in an order. I chose Reveltas (beans & pork), Chicharon (ground seasoned pork) and Loroco (an edible flower native to Central America). All have cheese inside also. The food is amazing!!! I can't say more good stuff that has been said already. I will definitely eat here when I visit Tallahassee again.

I absolutely love this place! The food is delicious and the staff is extremely nice. We always have them cater our organization's events and they never disappoint.

El Viroleno has my heart and soul fully. The hidden establishment on West Tennessee Street has been in the dark for years (at least in my eyes). But one day I opened them to discover the Latin cuisine treat of a lifetime. El Viroleno turned me on to the pupusa - the textbook definition of homemade and addicting eats. The space itself resembles a hole-in-the-wall, attached to a tattoo parlor and a check-cashing one-stop-shop. It upsets me I was out of the loop for so long on this restaurant. El Viroleno has been pumping out authentic Latin grub for years and years. And what's more, the menu offers these delicacies for petty change. Pupusas are merely $2. These pupusas will convert your ideologies on life. You can stuff them with nearly anything you'd like. I chose jalepenos, shredded pork and black beans, respectively. These were served with a sweet and spicy salsa that's a much needed kick in the pants and a Latin slaw concoction of cabbage, jalepenos and other secret ingredients. My palette was going down the rabbit hole of intriguingly intense flavor. My service experience was quick and easy. The woman who rung me up was helpful and patient with me, as she knew I was popping my pupusa cherry. The food came out in under 10 minutes, which is always worth noting. You'll be sold from day one.

This place serves excellent Salvadoran food. I've been there twice so far, and everything I've ordered has been both delicious and inexpensive. The pupusas are first rate, and the platanos fritos with crema and refried beans will change your life. They also serve the best tortilla chips I've had in Tallahassee. Service is fast and courteous, and there is ample parking in the back. Simply put, this is the best Latin food I've had anywhere in the panhandle. Whatever you are doing at the moment, you should stop and just go straight to El Viroleno. (Note: This is located where a former Mexican restaurant, El Ranchito, used to be.)

Menudo EVERY day? That, alone, gets five stars. I've been to places in the heart of border country (El Paso, Las Cruces, etc...) that only served menudo on weekends. The only other place in town that I know of is a weekends only proposition. The menudo here is good. Just the right amount of guajillo and well proportioned amount of tripe. Intense concentrated flavor so I suspect it's first cooled, then chilled and reheated for next day service (which would make sense). The shrimp soup is phenomenal. Note that I'm one to apply superlatives and intensifiers sparingly - but here, I'll go further and say the shrimp soup is VERY phenomenal - and "Epic". The broth draws you in for more. Transforming decapod crustaceans into such heady goodness is in itself admirable - but THIS soup is of the sort that compels diners to return. Two paragraphs, and only TWO menu items discussed. I've never before had pupusas - so can't offer comparisons. I can say they are tasty and unique. Be careful with that first bite or you will scald your lips, palate and tongue. Insanely hot layer of queso blanco inside. I learned the hard way. There are various pupusas options. I enjoyed the chicharonnes, jalapeño and calabaza (pumpkin). But back to the shrimp soup. It's so good. The presentation itself is a spectacle as whole shrimp are in it - stalked eyes peering into yours, accepting terms that involve them seeing your digestive track in its entirety. El Viroleño is as good as it is humble.

If you want to eat where the locals eat, this is as good a place as any. El Viroleno has that hole in wall feeling, especially from the outside. Their sign looks like it was written with a marker on some construction board and hung at the top. I think it is rather charming, so don't mistake me as saying it as a negative. These are the types of places I really enjoy. The food is really good. I've only ever had the Pupusas here, but I would like to try their assortment of tacos and Pollo Guisado at some point. The Pupusas are similar to Arepa's and you can get them filled with many types of ingredients including cheese, Jalapenos, Pork, Chicken, Beans, Shrimp and Vegetables. They also come with a homemade cabbage slaw and hot sauce that is pretty good. I highly recommend this place for lunch as it is the best type of deal you can have. Great food and cheap on your wallet.

Do you know how it is when you walk into an ethnic restaurant and you get a good feeling about it because all of the patrons appear to be of that or similar ethnic background? That's what happened when we walked into El Viroleno and we knew we were on to something special. Everything is really delicious and fresh. For the sake of brevity I'm going to limit my raving to the pupusas. We had the cheese and frijole pupusas and they were outstanding. I couldn't believe something so simple could taste so good! Thank you to previous reviewers for the recommendation. You were spot on!
(5)Tanya S.
After moving out to Tallahassee from southern California I was horribly disappointed by all the Mexican and other latin American food joints. UNTIL i found El Viroleno. The papusas are delicious and inexpensive. Everything I have had has been amazing! So sad it took me so long to find it.

THIS place. OH Gosh. This place is something else - its near campus and the tiny sign does make it "blend" in with the street...but this place is a gem. Don't be turned off by the area or the exterior, it is actually very open and nice inside. The pupusas are to die for - (similar to an arepa) t El Viroleno's pupusas are so delicious, filling and inexpensive. You can get a whole meal for 5 dollars and leave more than satisfied. I tried about 4 varieties and they taste so homemade, and the fillings are generous. The loroco (an edible flower), the refried beans are delicious, and so is the rice. Main entree plates are HUGE, they come with rice (traditional in Latin American cuisine), plantains, beans, the entry, and a salad. The portions are very generous! The ladies at the counter are very sweet, and its a great place to practice your Spanish. I love to come here and catch up on my Telemundo shows. They also have menudo, sopa de gallina, and so many delicious meals. They alos have smoothies made of fruit, like strawberries, pineapples.... This is the only place in Tallahassee with Latin American food that is actually close to authentic to the place that it claims to be from. When I eat their food I feel like I am back at the motherland enjoying my grandmother's cooking. Its that special.

Love love love! Their pupusas are a go-to win - made fresh in house - love the calabaza and jalapeño variations. The slaw is just awesome! The stuffed chile rellenos are some of the best i've ever had. Filled with cheese and fresh veggies! and the sauce on top is awesome!
(5)Nikki P.
My husband and I stopped in for lunch on our way back home :) we found it on yelp & are so glad we did!!! The chile releno and pupusas were delicious!!!

Places like this always get me, and why not? The building isn't the nicest you've ever been in but the food is fantastic and the people always very friendly. If you aren't familiar with food from El Salvador you have to try the papusas, plantains with cream and beans, and the stewed chicken. They also have the best Mexican food in town other than La Tiendita.
(5)Ryan S.
Walked into this place and thought, no way is this 5 stars worthy. False, it is. The puppusas are ridiculously good, i had one along with the carne gisada, which was also phenominal. The corn tortillas were homemade. This will be my go to when i come back to Tallahassee for sure. Service is great too.

Menudo every day? NOT open on Monday and open till 8 otherwise (except Tuesday till 5). (This review composed while standing outside the front door on a Monday.)
(1)Marco R.
The food is out of this world! Fresh and with the home-made touch. Every time I go I feel like I'm eating at a friend's place. The staff is super friendly and the pupusas are to die for!

Everything about El Viroleno (with the exclusion of the building itself) was welcoming. Luvy, our waitress, was very helpful and patient. She also brought our table the extra pupusas from the kitchen (which is always appreciated!) We tried all kinds of the different drinks offered. I got the orange-flavored Jarritos, which essentially tasted like an orange Popsicle. A bit too sweet for me, but still yummy. We also tried orchata, a sweet and creamy rice drink, that was the tables favorite. We tried the Michelada (essentially a beer Bloody Mary) and while I'm sure they made it perfectly we were not fans at all. Tomatoes in beer didn't bode well. As others have said the pupusas are wonderful and a must-try option. For anyone who doesn't know, a pupusa is a cornmeal pocket with cheese and additional fillings can be added. The cabbage and salsa add an extra layer of flavor that is both crisp and flavorful. For the entree I had Pollo Guisada, which was flavored with typical Salvadoran seasonings (according to the menu - not my knowledge). The stewed chicken was delicious and practically fell off the bone. The rice and beans were a perfect temperature and some of the best seasoned I have ever had. Homemade tortillas with some shredded lettuce and dices tomatoes were given to everyone as an additional serving option as well. For dessert I ordered flan and was not disappointed. While there was nothing particularly special about this flan it was prepared quickly and the chill was just right. Parking is out back and right off Tennessee St. There is also an entrance in the back. I definitely suggest anyone who enjoys good food and service to give El Viroleno a try!

This restaurant is a hidden gem in Tallahassee. The decor is simple, you probably passed it on W Tennessee a thousand times, and it's not going to require a suit and tie. However, do not let appearances fool you - the food is increÃble! The pupusas are, of course, wonderful and probably why the majority of diners come here. But, if you're feeling adventurous, try to Sopa de Gallina on the weekends (serves 2, honestly), or the Ajà de gallina. They are both delicious and will leave you full for hours. Service is friendly (and bilingual!), and everything is homemade.
(5)Judy M.
Food very good, place is a very neighborhood type place. Sticky menus, sticky tables, but good food.
(3)Katie S.
Totally a dive, but the food is fantastic. Not happy with the "minimum order" requirement for ordering pupusas ( 3 per person, they say, if that's all you're ordering), but I understand they need to make money, even if I can't eat that much food. Chips were stale, but at least they served them. Good food, okay service, a total hole in the wall but delicious!
(3)Zachary L.
This place is cheap as hell and the food is good as shit. I had three pupusas with calabaza, frijoles, and jalapeño, respectively. Each one tasted better than the previous one and all were simply outstanding. I will 100% be returning and recommend that all come visit. Also, it's right next to where the homeless shelter used to be, but the shelter moved so it's not as jank. Be bold. Come.
(5)Logan B.
Best Central American food in Tallahassee (at least as far as I know). Simple, delicious, authentic Salvadorian food, made with love. The pupusas are delicious and can be made with any filling you want (cheese, chicken, shrimp, jalapeño, loroco flowers, etc, etc). They're also fairly inexpensive. The escabeche that comes with the pupusas is also great. Fresh and crisp. There's parking in the back, too, so it's very convenient. They make everything from scratch and it's a small family operation, so you might have to wait a little while to get your food, but it'll be well worth it. Have a horchata while you wait, or a beer, and snack on the tortilla chips and salsa. Their salsa is very good, too, and very fresh.
(5)Evan K.
I had the Papusas to taste the food of El Salvador and they were amazing. Make sure to try the cabbage on top with salsa to complement the Papusa. Delicious! The chicken tacos were amazing as well. Great prices and good service with a smile. I will be back
(4)Joe Z.
I chose this place to take a family of four. Started out with plantains and seven different papusas. Cheese, jalapeño, shrimp and pork took the prize. I ordered chicken tacos which were flippin' fantastic, and the steak quesadilla was spiced well. The cheese this place uses makes all the food sing, and that little dab of sour cream made a few dishes addicting. They make their own dry chili spice and a mild chili sauce that goes on each table. Also, order a Coke-a-Cola made from cane sugar, and if you dare, eat your fill of chips and salsa. I was completely satisfied!!!
(5)Kevin Y.
The pupusas are amazing; you must order at least one when you come! Maybe two... I could have eaten 4, called it a meal, and still only pay like $10. Mine were served hot and perfectly seasoned; I was afraid that they were going to be greasy but was very pleasantly surprised! I would give it 5 stars if it were cleaner and more bright lit inside, but honestly I would come back here in a heartbeat.
(4)Valerie G.
Where to start with this place? If one were to judge a book by its cover - but one wouldn't, because momma taught you better than that - you wouldn't even consider dining here. However, this tiny little family run hole-in-the wall is heaven to your tastebuds! Being hispanic myself, and loving all Latin food equally, I can't believe I had never tried a pupusa until I came here. It's similar to what we Venezuelans call an arepa but it is so good! Finding decent Latin food (of any kind, be it Cuban, Colombian, Mexican, or other) in Tallahassee is a task for the bravest and most patient of souls, and one that ends at El Viroleño. It was so tasty, I had to return the very next day for breakfast just to confirm the amazingness. Yep, still amazing. So far I've had the carne guisada (beef stew, for my non-Spanish speaking friends) and caldo de gallina (hen soup? I don't know, but rest assured the hen is served on the side) and both have been amazing. I'd say any item on their menu is probably a safe bet and I can't wait to return to sate my desire for hispanic home cooking in Tallahassee and continue trying their delicious menu items!
