I was just turned away from sitting down for a bowl of soup because they close in 15 minutes, although there were several tables that had plenty of food which would take a good 45 minutes to finish...poor customer service!!! Two nice ladies that were eating couldn't believe they wouldn't seat me!

I have been awhile customer to this restaurant since the early 1980's. I have always enjoyed the food here and would even bring business clients here for dinner or lunch. I recently brought to business clients to Marios for dinner. The food was ok service was a little slow but the straw that broke the camel's back was when the owner of the restaurant came over about 10 minutes after we received our food and asked us to hurry and finish up because they were closing because his people needed to clean up and go home. Needless to say I was terribly embarrassed as were my business clients and I will never ever eat here again. The owner and his wife need to take some friendly classes and learn how to treat and deal with people.

I ordered delivery and 30 minutes later it arrived!!! Pizza was great! Thin crust, flavorful, and enough of everything on it to make it just right Also had a house salad with vinegar and oil, Gorgonzola cheese and tomatoes! Great flavor! Tried one of the complimentary garlic rolls. LOTS of garlic and a bit overpowering. I'd definitely order from here again!!!

Food was great and the customer service was even better! I had a delightful experience and I'll definitely be coming back!

Before my office moved locations, Mario the Baker was in my regular circuit for lunch, mostly because it was super convenient. There was never any trouble getting parking, never a problem getting a table, the space is clean, the prices are pretty cheap and where the service may not the best ever, they get you fed and out the door in a reasonable amount of time. The food is exactly what you'd expect. It's pretty standard neighborhood Italian; it won't knock your socks off, but it'll do. The handful of times I came here, I rotated between ordering pizza and baked ziti. The baked ziti comes with salad and garlic rolls, and the salad dressing is good, I'll give them that. The rolls are pretty good too, but a garlic roll would have to be really offensive in order for me to not like it. The pizza is interchangeable.. it's pizza so by that right it's good, steps above dominos or the like, but not something to drive out of your way for. The baked ziti is a different story. I ordered it twice before I realized it was missing an important component: ricotta. Baked ziti has 4 main ingredients: ziti, sauce, mozzarella, and ricotta. Nix the ricotta and you've got pasta with melted cheese on top. My office has moved and is no longer a 2 min drive from Mario the Baker, so I probably won't ever be back. This place is decent if you work or live close by, seeing as there really aren't too many options in the vicinity. A place I'd recommend if you are really craving good Italian food? nahh.

I'll start off by saying that this was the best service we've had since moving to S. Florida. Tony was all over the place and knew his stuff too. The food was no let down either. We had the chicken Marsala and pepperoni pizza. Both were really good, and the garlic rolls were quite simply amazing. We also had the cannoli and strawberry shortcake for dessert which were big and good. The portion sizes are definitely worth the prices.

I find it interesting that all of the poor reviews for this restaurant are in those which are not recommended. Poor service, poor quality, and attitude should not not be hidden Yelp!

I remember Mario the Baker from North Miami and I was craving eggplant today. Sure, I could go to my go to spot Anthony's Coal Fire (which has my favorite eggplant in the area) but I wanted Southern Italian, cheesy goodness with a salad- you know, to be healthy! Anthony's is ala carte. So we ordered in and decided to pick it up. We ordered a meatball parm sub, a chicken sicilian sub (chicken parm with eggplant) and eggplant parm lunch. The woman who took my order was pleasant. I asked for Creamy Italian on my salad but she said they only had vinaigrette or creamy peppercorn. I chose the latter. My boyfriend picked it up but he called me while I was there to see if I wanted cheese on the sub because they didn't make it with cheese. Who doesn't want cheese on a chicken parm sub??? So they added the cheese and he was home soon enough. The sub was good (with cheese!) and my bf liked his meatball sub. The salad was fresh and the peppercorn dressing was fantastic- I just wished there was a tomato on the salad. I then tried the eggplant parm. It wasn't Anthony's by any stretch but the worst thing was the spaghetti it came with. I've never had such a bland red sauce EVER! I'd suggest skipping that. However, the big redeeming quality was the garlic rolls, which were delicious.

A great place to check out. The garlic knots were terrific. We ordered the chicken parm and spaghetti/meatball plates. The only reason I gave 4/5 is because of the meatballs.. Not bad but they didn't look freshly made. The decor could use an upgrade but I've seen much worse. The staff was friendly and our waiter was very attentive.

Went there last night for a Birthday dinner, we had 6 adults and two children in high chairs, Mario's put two two tables together a round and a square table which made seating uncomfortable with the tables not joining together. The service was poor, felt like we were intruding on the regular patronage, had to ask for everything several times, was not overly busy to feel we were in the way. My husband and my one daughter and her husband each ordered pizzas and were very disappointed, my other daughter ordered eggplant parmigiana with ziti and ate very little of it and refused to to take it home with her. Did not care for the taste. We have eaten here before but definitely won't be returning!!

All of the other Yelpers were right...the garlic rolls are the best! They came out hot, fresh and crisp. The soup was good and the salad fresh with delcious croutons they had to have made themselves. The chicken parmegian could feed a family it was so huge not to mention the big bowl of pasta that comes with it. You could tell the chicken breast was fresh. It was crispy, smothered in mozzarella cheese and topped with just the right amount of really good sauce. Then came the canolli. Wow, was it huge and had chocolate shavings mixed in the cannoli cream. The waitress was super nice and everything came out of the kitchen fast. It was a great time and I'm already planning on what I want the next time I go.

Worst experience I have ever had!! Not sure if the food or the service was worse. The only positive about this place was the friendly bus boy who was more helpful than any server in that place. I will be completely shocked if my family doesn't get food poisoning from this place. The chicken parmesan smelled like dog food. I have never posted a bad review in my life so you know this experience had to be bad to post a review 10 minutes after leaving. I will never return and I caution anyone who chooses to.

Nice service but Terrible food. with a capital "T." Please save your money and go somewhere else. Little Cesar's pizza beats this 10 to 1. Garlic rolls were gross and the antipasto had what seemed to be a DOG salami type inedible food.

This place is amazing. Lets start off with our waiter who had a mustache that was awesome and he was one of the best waiters we ever had (i used to be a waiter to believe me, i know). The pizza was the best i've had in the USA. Dunno what they did to make it but i wont forget it. The mugs for the beer were awesome. The salad was nice and fresh and the kids spaghetti and meatballs was devoured by our young ones who are VERY particular.

I would like to up-date to anyone reading Yelp reviews for Mario The Baker. I flagged a review by a Jessica L. She had 2, 1 remains. Yelp agreed what she wrote was inappropriate by referring to the owner in a demeaning manner. Should there have been any substance to what she said he did/said, she never would have gone back a second time. I wouldn't of. Yet, she did. I personally would disregard anything in her review. P.S. I didn't flag both, we live in America, you're allowed to speak. But I did flag what was a character assassination and blatant lie. -Colleen

Beats the hell outta me why my family still supports this racist, disgusting excuse for an Italian restaurant. They ordered in from here a few weeks ago, and me and my boyfriend were over, (the same guy that little Frankie racially-insulted a few years back), and we opted for Tijuana Flats instead. All I know is that my mom ordered the calimari marinara and said it was like rubber. I picked one up and closely examined it. I could've sworn that they cooked actual rubber-bands into the dish. Not kidding. How unappetizing and nasty. All that ran through my head when I saw the rubber-band marinara was Frank's words echoing in my head from a few years back, "I stand behind my product!" when I complained about the diarrhea marsala. Stand behind that. With love, Jessie L.

Enjoyable, always enjoyable. Ambiance is a bit bland but the staff and smells overcome that. Food is always well prepared, fresh and just plain good. A good place.

Ordered a large cheese pizza and a half a dozen garlic rolls. The pizza has a nice thing crust and is not overly greasy at all. Order the garlic rolls with light on the oil and they are really good. They delivered to our hotel even though it was out of their way but advised us that they wouldn't do it again. Overall good food.

Came here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Portions were huge, wine 1/2 carafe yielded 4 full glasses, garlic rolls were PERFECT, side salad was diverse & entrees were delicious.

Been wanting to try Mario the Baker for some time now. Went by last night and picked up 2 chicken dishes (the saltimbocca & the chicken parm), some calamari and a small pizza for the kids. Frank the owner was at the register and waited on me. I would describe him as a New Yorker. Somewhat abrupt and a little rude. Regardless he was nice enough and the order was placed. It came out within 15 minutes as promised. So now to the meal- the food was mostly tasteless. Only the garlic rolls had much flavor. The kids did like the pizza but the rest was pretty blah. I'm not a huge Carrabas fan but I would place Mario the Baker as maybe 1-1 1/2 stars and Carrabas at 3- 3 1/2. Pricing? About the same. So all in all a pretty big disappointment. Oh, and did I mention my wife and I both had diarrhea after eating? Diner beware!

This place gets mixed reviews... and now I know why :( This would have been a nice decor about two decades ago. We visited on a Tuesday night and ALL the other patrons were grandparents. Our slow mo gramps server took forever for order, for food, etc. Our garlic rolls weren't even hot by the time we got to them. The food was mediocre. The starter salad looked haphazardly thrown onto a plate. The baked clams had mushy breadcrumb topping. Our entrees -- Parmagiana Veal, Chicken, and Eggplant and Linguini tossed in tomato sauce -- were nothing to write home about. I made the mistake of having a dissembled layer of breaded eggplant the next day - horrid. The one amazing thing was the fried calamari. Lightly breaded and fried, served with a big helping of chunky, well-seasoned marinara sauce. I'd go back for that. But I wouldn't come back after this experience. What a shame.

Went here for dinner the other day with two friends for the first time. It's been around since 1973 and I've always been meaning to try it. We ordered a 1/2 dozen garlic rolls and a large 16" pizza with pepperoni, fresh basil, and fresh garlic. The rolls were decent, loaded with garlic, a little crisp on the outside and a little crunchy on the inside. They weren't amazing but for some reason I didn't find the garlic that strong (my friend complained about not being able to taste the bread). As for the pizza, it was a thin cracker crust. Not exactly NY style but you could fold in half and hear it split a little down the middle. Rather than minced garlic it had slices. The small amounts of basil and pepperoni were hidden under the cheese and I honestly couldn't taste the basil at all and same with the pepperoni. I didn't get a good look at the entrees but the restaurant was fairly packed.

For the area the food is good. I'm used to home cooked Italian food so I judge differently than most when it comes to Italian restaurants. Some things are a bit bland but others are great. Didn't like the pizza. It was over cooked but the carbonara was very good. The price is good. The staff were very friendly. I'll be back.

A very reasonable Italian restaurant. Do not come here if you are after a romantic and gourmet Italian meal. It is definitly a family place. The calamari frita was very well done, with just the right amount of crispiness. The garlic rolls were good although this was the first time I have ever had them. They must be a Florida tradition. The included salad was HUGH. The pasta was good and the amount of food served was more than adequate.

I was here today and had the siciliana sandwich .. its an eggplant and and chicken cutlet combo and its really good with a nice size portion... the thin crust pizza is always good here they also have really good lunch time deals .. I won't need to think twice about coming here food, value, and service is all good here.

A delish, legit fam establishment. The menu is huge, with great Italian options for everyone. The owners are in there every night, and it shows in both the food and the service. Yumzo.

Second time I came here and it was a charm. It is a wonderful place to eat, but I have yet still to find the amazing pie of pizza that I have been looking for. Here at Mario you are sure to get fine quality ingredients and great service. they just have not yet made the pizza the way I have set my mind to eating one.

The pizza here is the BEST around!! Garlic rolls are awesome too. My family and I have been coming here since they opened, going back to my grandparents too. My grandfather was a picky eater and loved the pizza here. The dishes are usually pretty good too but My favorite is either the Chicken/Veal Marsala or the Eggplant Parmigiana. If you want the best pizza around, come here!!

If there is one thing I look for in Italian dining, it is atmosphere. My favorite Italian joints have always been one where I have been made to feel like part of the family. That being said, ten minutes in Mario the Baker and I felt like one of the clan. It also doesn't hurt that the food was fantastic. I'm a big eater and I ended up taking food home! I always recommend this restaurant to friends who are in the area. And when I am home in South Florida, I swing by for the food and ambiance.

Mario the Baker is my FAVORITE Italian restaurant! The food is to die for. Since I no longer live in FL any time I return, I make a point to come here. It's a real treat. All dishes come with soup or salad.. The house salad with peppercorn dressing is what has kept me coming back time and again. Meals also come with your choice of plain or garlic rolls.. Go with the garlic rolls of course! They are fresh, juicy, and so tasty. My family and I have been coming here for years and can say that the baked ziti, veal parm, chicken parm, eggplant parm, chicken marsala, pizza is amazing. Everything really is the highest quality. Dishes are very large, enough for 2, maybe 3 meals. Service is great and atmosphere is clean and inviting. You can rent the back room for groups or parties, which I did once. TRY IT!

First of all, this place is Zagat-rated. It was recently reviewed because their award listed 2012. Was recommended by our grandmother who told us that back in the day, there was a line outside and around the restaurant. Best garlic knots, huge portions of pasta that 2 adults could share or 2 adults and 1 child could share. The soup, pasta fagioli, was delicious but a bit salty. I would not recommend the Caprese at all because the tomatoes were under ripe. The eggplant parmesan was pretty tasty. The marinara sauce was pretty good too. Beers and wine were $3.50. Pasta dishes were $11.00. Service was great. They held a ice cream cake for us, put a candle and brought it out for our grandmother for a surprise. Would definitely visit again.

My wife and I went in for a late dinner and there were only two other tables occupied. We ordered water and our meals. Service was slow especially considering the place was almost empty. Dinner was not extraordinary: I added crushed red pepper to my bland eggplant parmigiana (probably made so bland because the clientele in the Sunrise/Tamarac area complains it is spicy if they can even taste it). Only the garlic rolls were memorable (not a problem if you are there to carb-load, more of an issue if you actually want to enjoy your meal). Our waiter never returned to our table to refill our water glasses and we sat talking for over 10 minutes after we finished eating before someone cleared our table. When we received the check we noticed that we had been charged for two sodas (at around $3). I hailed our server and pointed out the error then waited for him to return with a corrected bill. No apology was offered, no admission that an error was made. After about 10 minutes I walked up to the register and spoke with someone who appeared to be the manager. I explained the problem and said I had spoken to our server but that he had disappeared. Instead of correcting the error the manager questioned me, asking if I was sure we had not ordered sodas. The table had been cleared so there was no way to prove my claim. The manager offered a flimsy excuse that sometimes mistakes are made (with only three tables occupied?). I had to wait another five minutes before the sodas were removed from the bill. Again, no apology or admission of any error. I can't help but wonder how many other people have not caught this "mistake" when it is made. It could be quite a scam: the restaurant charges for drinks not ordered and the server gets a higher tip or they reluctantly correct the error if it is discovered and pretend it was inadvertent. Think about it: how many people only look at the total at the bottom of the bill and don't look at each item charged? Beware of this dishonest establishment.

Thought I'd give this a go since it had some good reviews on Yelp. The meal was just ok. You can't top their lunch special... ridiculously cheap. I got the half chicken parm sandwich. I also added the 3 garlic rolls for 99 cents. They were good, but nothing here stood out. The salad was probably the highlight... very fresh lettuce, tomato, etc. If you're up for the extra 15 minute drive, a similar place I always go to is Isabella's down near the cruise ships. Those garlic knots are to die for! And the chicken parm's better... certainly not $5.99 though like this place. For the money, this place is an ok choice.

Finally got to try this place. Many of my friends told me they like this place, so thought I will give it a try. I went here for lunch the other day. The place is small with very minimal to almost no decor. The waitress was prompt to seat us. I ordered a eggplant parm sub while my friend ordered some pasta. The garlic rolls here are delicious..they are moist...with a good amount of garlic and olive oil on them..They are on the greasy side but some people might not care. The sandwich, which I had high expectations on because of all my friends was a let down. Trust me, I go to a lot of Italian places and I had a lot of eggplant parm subs... So I know what I am talking about. It was fluffy Italian bread with fried breaded eggplant parm slices, with provolone and marinara... These things are a bit greasy usually but this was just too much and the taste wasn't that great either. The eggplant was not seasoned well and the sub tasted bland... For me, if I am ingesting a ton of calories, I would atleast expect it to be delicious...naah this was not worth it. May be the other sandwiches are good...my friends told me they like the chicken parm sub and others...just give it a try and be the judge

I've been eating here for close to 30 years. Decent food, adequate service. I go out to dinner with my father on Sunday nights and every six weeks or so end up here. We went tonight and had a short wait for a table. My father ordered pasta and my wife and I ordered a pizza. The waiter (nice guy) forewarned us that pizza could take as long as thirty minutes but then whispered that he could get it out sooner. Twenty minutes later my dads pasta was served with the waiter explaining he didn't want it to get cold and our pizza would be right out. At 30 minutes he told us it would be 7 more minutes. At 40 minutes he told us it hadn't been put in the oven yet. I asked for the check. At the register the owners brother asked how we enjoyed our dinner. I told him we never received it. His reply was "that's what happens when you have orders for 50 pizzas". I told him it would have been nice to have been informed this upon ordering and I was leaving hungry. He shrugged and said "sorry". Any business can experience service issues. What happens during and after the problem are signs of excellence or failure. Mario The Baker gets an "F".

Went to this restaurant for dinner last night. I love going to little mom and pop Italian restaurants because they are far superior to those big chains. The food was really good. The Italian wedding soup was delicious and hot. The same goes with the Penne a la Vodka. My problem wasn't with the food or our server. The problem I had was walking in the door 45 mins before they were suppose to close and an older gentleman greeting us to the tune of "Hi welcome, we are closing at 9 so if you are not going to spend an hour eating we will be more than happy to accommodate you." Customer service is a big part of the equation of me returning, and while the food was excellent I'm stilled shocked by the lack of respect to the consumer.

This place has really great pizza and garlic rolls. We didn't try any of their meat dishes, so I can't comment on those. The rolls were good sized with just the right amount of fresh garlic. The inside needs some updating, but other than that, the food and service was great.

  • Richard A.

Five of us ate here last night. The food was well below average and so was the service. Two of the meals came out cold after we waited a long time for the food. I also thought that the wine selection of only house wines was poor. Also, the size of the glass for the price was way too small. After coming to Mario's for more than 20 years during our visits to the area we will probably not return to Mario's.

The food was burnt or just plain not good. My friend got baked ziti, the ziti was hard as rocks and burnt. My other friend who got pasta and meat balls said the meat balls were not good. The service was subpar. Our server took a very long time to get to us and take our order. "It'll just be a minute" turned in to it actually being 30 minutes. My friend who asked for a drink, asked about 3 times before the server brought the drink. Overall- I would not eat there again, and I wouldn't suggest it to friends or family that I care about.

this place is one of the best italian restaurants i've been to! their garlic rolls are to die for! so tasty, tons of butter and garlic, but so worth it! :) their combo platters are huge and their clams liguine dish with white sauce... the sauce had robust and fresh flavors! homemade tiramisu... was delicious! and service was great too... which was a plus...:) i would definitely go back to this place... :)

Just 21 reviews? How could that be? I've been coming here since I was a little kid. My granparents( rest their souls) lived in Sunrise Lakes( Phase 1, that should tell you something). They always took us here as did my parents( before they broke up our family with their divorce). Whenever I eat a garlic knot from Mario The Baker, I think of my sweet grandma, oh how she loved those knots. Anyway, The food is great, the service is good. The prices cant be beat. I love the salad and the creamy dressing that comes with it. My favorite item has to be the baked ziti. Whenever I'm back in FL, I order it. The last few times, I've been branching out and got a special or a fish dish. All delicious. I cant wait to go back with my partner and introduce her to this deliciousness.

This place reminds me of the Brooklyn of my youth. A place where I could get a side of lasagna with an order of veal parmigiana. OK Mario doesn't do that, but the taste of his food really does remind me of the taste of a red sauce Italian joint in Brooklyn in 1970. The garlic rolls are crusted and covered with garlic and just drip with oil. Delish. Veal parm was tender covered in chesse. The red sauce that covered the cheese was tangy and tasty. Delish again. Baked ravioli to die for. Veal marsala was sweet and tender. What more could you ask for?

I tried this place for delivery, based on the yelp reviews. I was expecting better food. The mozza sticks were such a disappointment. Shriveled up rubbery cheese. Pizza was ok, Garlic knots were dry and not very garlic-y. bummer.

Simply the best old school Italian restaurant in South Florida. Don't expect she she atmosphere or candles but expect mountains of insane Southern Italian staples at reasonable prices. The garlic rolls are simply some of the best in the country. Ask for them wet and you will have enough garlic to keep your enemies away for weeks. They always cook em fresh and keep em coming. The sauce is also first rate; not acidic and a bright red color. All meals come with a large side salad which is rare to find in any restaurant anymore. The chicken parmigiana at $11.95 offered a tender fried very large serving with plenty of perfectly cooked glorious cheese. The side spaghetti is the perfect compliment. The pizza is decent as well. Baked Ziti, Meatballs served in heaping portions. I frequently drive 30 minutes or more when I have the misfortune of being stuck in that hot, humid, flat ugly sprawl known as South Florida. Mario's is definately a bright shining lght. Love the authentic,no nonsense, highly skilled staff a through back from the days when good service mattered. There is a reason this place has been going strong for 40 years.

I just can not understand how if you are from a large city you would give a rating of this place anything greater than 2 MAYBE 3 stars??? I guess if the price is inexpensive and you get a plateful of food more senior people would give a place an absurd rating. Forget about the food. Just lead the cows to a trough. Food wise it was at best meh. The red sauce is watery and lacked any real body. The seasoning was too light, needed some meat to it. The Pasta I think was home made and forgetting about the watery sauce, the pasta itself was decent quality. The salad was boring but fresh. The roasted peppers were meh. The Meatballs were of good quality. I think it comes down to the thin sauces. I am kind of tired of reading about inflated ratings of just ok at best restaurants. This Restaurant falls exactly into that category. Fair, eh, ok, but NEVER a terrific Italian place.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
