A Spanish inspired tapas bar..nice rustic decor and Spanish music as background.. We sat outside and ordered two red house wines and a pan con tomate (flat breat with tomato sauce ) which tasted a Lil bland and looked more like a tiny pizza.. Our server took very long to take our order and the food (which was only one dish) took also a long time to arrive...but since we were in no rush ..it didn't bother us...the place has potential but the service needs to improve.

This was hands down the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. We waited for 15 minutes and our server still hadn't come so finally a bus boy took our order. Then, we waited almost 30 minutes for our appetizer, which was simply hummus with some chips. Then, it took another 15 minutes to get our meal. The fish tacos were average and the burger tasted strange. Then, it took another 20 minutes for them to pick up our credit card. Granted, our server was having to deal with complaints from a number of other unhappy customers (cold food, slow service, errors on the bill) but our sever walked past our table plenty of times carrying nothing at all. And our meal was very overpriced. What should have been a quick, enjoyable lunch turned into a frustrating 1.5 hour waste of time and money. Go anywhere but here!

Terrible service... The worst! We waited like 20 minutes for our drinks, then another 35 for our food. The flatbread was very mediocre - it was basically bread (hardly any of the toppings that were supposed to be on it). We then had to wait forever for our check. The only good thing I can say was the beer (they had Duke's). I wouldn't recommend this place.

I have never eaten here; but the Sangria is very good, I always stop in when I am in St. Augustine to get a couple glasses, and I do not drink wine. tried this place about 5 years ago and it is a must stop when ever we brave the crowded St. George tourist area. The service is good bathrooms clean and always a good conservation in the small place that is historic itself.

Loved the rustic decor. We sat outdoors since we were traveling with our kids and puppy. Ordered two Sangrias and they were delicious. The Mercado cheese plate with crostini is the perfect starter. Three of us ordered sandwiches, grilled chicken, Argentinian Choripan & Gaucho sandwich(this one is served medium). Our older son ordered the Minorcan Pepper Flat bread with braised pulled pork and a delicious pepper BBQ sauce. My son loved it so much he later said, "if I was that pig, I would be proud!" Lol

I have come here a few times. The menu has not been the same each time I've come so they seem to be finding themselves on the menu front. The good news is... Whatever has been on the menu I have enjoyed. Today's visit they are more Spanish tapas which is what I think they should be serving in the Spanish Colonial Quarter. My mom is from Spain so I grew up eating Spanish food. The sangria isn't real sangria but it was REALLY good on a hot day... So I had 2 at only $5 each. The Albondigas (meatballs) were excellent and the gazpacho (cold tomato soup) is from Andalusia the Southern region of Spain.. Different than what my family makes since my family isn't from that region but pretty authentic from what I can remember from trips to Spain. More than anything I love the atmosphere and staff. Each time I have gone I have taken at least one of our dogs. I sit outside and listen to Spanish music, the dog(s) get water and treats and we receive great service from truly friendly people. All at really reasonable prices in the heart of Historic St. Augustine. So although the menu seems to be in flux, it is always good and the service and atmosphere make me happy. What more can you ask for?

I created a yelp account just to write a review about this place. It's awful! The hostess is rude. We waited over 10 minutes just to get a waiter to acknowledge us. We had to complain to get service. Then the hostess offered us free chips to make up for the wait but then they never came either. Tables around us left in frustration. I will say once our waiter arrived he did is best to improve the situation. The food was also very good. The atmosphere is nice as well. They just really need to working on the management and timing. It would have made all the difference between 1 star and maybe 4 stars.

Food was good; a bit pricey, a bit small in portions, but good. However, the Dark and Stormy with house made ginger beer is the best I've ever had and made this place a must visit for us. Order one, you won't regret it.

The food was great but it took a bit long for us to get served. The goat cheese terrine and spanish tapas platter were tasty. I would not recommend going towards the end of the day; one of the items we tried to order was out and I heard the same happening to a few other tables. It was kind of a bummer, man.

Worth a second look, Went with a party of six and had no issues with seating or service, Our server was attentive, effective and enthusiastic. The food did take a bit long to be served but the restaurant has a new menu and it was worth the wait. Everything was delicious from the flat breads to the lamb and chorizo meatballs to the portabello muishroon and cheese plate. The live music only served to enhance this great dining experience.

Absolutely awful - take it from a local. There are so many wonderful restaurants in St. Augustine and I can assure you that this is not one of them. We waited to be seated only to be left to track down a hostess and be told to seat ourselves. Wait for food wasn't too long unfortunately. Guacamole tasted old and looked slimy. Chips were far past stale. Then the meals arrived and to our dismay the fish was rubbery and cold in the fish tacos and the steak in the burrito was barely edible mystery meat that was also very cold - the cheese on the burrito was not even melted. Thankfully the waitress grabbed her manager who apologized but was still snippy with us. We couldn't believe they still charged us for the drink and guac after such a terrible experience - we even heard a large table next to us expressing the same issue. First and last time I make that mistake - luckily Cousteau's waffle bar saved the night.

The best drinks I've had in town. The homemade tonic is amazing and you have to try the Queen Anne's revenge cocktail. The bartender is a long time local with a wealth of local knowledge and a friendly personality that makes you want to spend your whole evening here.

Waist of time... Poor service, lots of time... Kind of funny- or irritating. 7 of us ordered, they were out my 1st 2 selections, so I ordered a flat bread item. One hour later- 3 of or ordered sandwiches arrived and the waiter told me that they were out of my flatbread dish (it took an hour for you to tell me this?)... 25 minutes later, the rest of our order arrived. THEN, the manager took a little money off of our ticket as an apology, but still charged for the flatbread item that never showed up. I pointed this out and it took another 15 minutes to get a new ticket. I think we must have looked funny. There were 5 tables around us that came in after us, ordered, were served, and left prior to us. I think this might have been personal because there were so many errors. Either that or the cook and the waiter were having major issues.

Stopped in for lunch on a weekday. Ordered a flatbread and some tapas dishes. Was a little concerned when the wait started getting a bit long, especially after reading some of the other reviews. However, food was delivered in reasonable time and everything was warm or hot. The chorizo was good, as well as the flatbread, but the shrimp with chimichurri was really good. The pleasant ambience, music, and service made it an overall pleasant dining experience.

It was a rather severe disappointment to us when we saw that Taberna del Gallo ( yelp.com/biz/taberna-del… ) was no more. It was a favorite of ours, in its attempts to remain somewhat period-authentic with no artificial lighting or visible electrical items of any kind (I remember even the cash register was hidden behind a towel when not in use). Lit entirely by candlelight when the sun went down, we found the tiny little bar irresistible when we went out looking for a drink during our visits to St. Augustine. Taberna del Caballo is what became of Taberna del Gallo (I guess they didn't want to change the name TOO much), and the miniscule bar has been opened up by removing the separation between it and the place next door. They are now a full restaurant, with the bar operating pretty much as it did previously except with quite a bit less effort going toward period authenticity. The additional rooms are naturally lit as before, with large, low openings in the walls for light and breeze. Decoration is sparse but the overall feeling is still cozy and enjoyable, with the two additional rooms holding four tables each. This offers a great feeling of privacy when you have the only occupied table in a room. There is a large outdoor area as well. We only stayed for a drink, since we hadn't planned on food being served there. It's a nice looking place, worth checking out as you're passing through. We'll probably check out the food next time. It's lacking some of what made Taberna del Gallo so special to us, but this new incarnation is nice in its own right.

Interesting atmosphere and history. Cool place to have a drink. Not worth the price if you choose any dish over $10. Shrimp and grits were ok but only 6 small shrimp in the bowl. Too pricey at $18. My fault for ordering the wrong dish but don't make the same mistake.

The wife and I met up with some friends a few weeks back, and we all decided on trying this place, since we had seen it while walking St. George street. Although we got there at about 7pm on a Friday night, there was no wait, and we immediately found a table. We all ordered some wine and an appetizer, then proceeded to relax and enjoy the live music being played a few feet from our table. The music was pretty good- just a younger guy singing slower songs on an acoustic guitar, it was a pretty chill backdrop to enjoying some conversation with friends. We got some kind of cheese dip for the appetizer, and it wasn't bad, although it tasted like something you could get at Friday's, I wasn't overly impressed. We all decided on getting some sandwiches for the main meal- that's basically the whole menu here, the selections aren't varied and there aren't a whole lot of choices. You'd kind of expect to have a Columbia-style menu at a Spanish Colonial looking restaurant, but that's not the case here. After a lengthy wait for our food and a refill of wine, everything finally got to our table. I think everyone agreed that the sandwiches were good, but not amazing. It came out hot, and it was fresh (at least they didn't serve up frozen pre-cooked food), but it wasn't mind-blowing. Thankfully, the price wasn't terrible for the food we got. I enjoyed the sandwich and ate every bite, but was left feeling that it could've been better. There are a few plus sides to eating here- I've never seen it packed, you can usually find a table or a seat at the bar. The music was pretty good, and the decor of the place is very Spanish Colonial- they did do a nice job of it. The price wasn't bad for the food we got, and you get a pretty good sized glass of wine- so the value is pretty decent. However, the service was fairly slow, and the food although good- not amazing. I didn't have a bad time here- that's why I'm giving three stars, there are just too many great places to eat and drink in downtown St. Augustine, I would highly recommend looking at other places in the area...

Very friendly staff but the food was mediocre at best and a touch overpriced. We ordered the steak sandwich and Cuban. No the came with plain potato chips in a wire basket. The steak sandwich was on very stale bread but the flavor was okay. The Cuban was ham and chopped unflavored pork on a Cuban roll that was pressed - I repeat no flavor at all and the pork had that unwashed meat smell. They get a 2 star because the service was good.

This place takes you back to the colonial years, located in the St Augustine Historic District ,you are surround with many shops and restaurant but once your inside you forget the year your in. We were sited in the outside area but the entire place is completely lit with candlelight inside and out witch makes it so romantic and cozy. We went in for some Sangria and then decided to order the Plato Del Capitan, which is a platter with a variety of cheese and meats also warm Cuban bread cut in slices, perfect for two to share. The Sangria was very tasty and came perfect with our platter. The downfall to this place is the service. The hostess was very quick and sitting us down. but the waitress would disappear for long periods of times. I can tell you if the service would of been better we would of probably stayed for a couple of more drinks. Overall I would go back, the place has charm and style but I hope the service is not the same.

And this is why we Yelp.. Everyone was hungry and in colonial section wifi was nonexistent. Took a chance on this place, which had a reasonable looking menu. Slow service, mediocre food. Nachos with almost no cheese. Cuban sandwich so so, mojo pork eh.

Avoid this place as a tourist trap. The decore is it's only charming item. The food was poor and not really Spanish. For example the Barcelona flatbread had corn on it; which has nothing to do with Barcelona. Instead we ordered t h e cheese platter. stick with cheese or cold cut platters, cannot be ruined by cooking.

Bar service is lacking. Do yourself a favor and sit at a table. Have been here on several occasions and sat at the bar, you tend to be ignored by the bartenders which is odd considering you think that would be the place you get the most attention. Sometimes there is a bar back floating around back there but you aren't going to get attention from them either. Best bet is going to be to sit at a table and have an actual server. Food is good, although sometimes they can forget one of the things you've ordered and you have to ask for it to make sure they just don't charge you for it and you not get it. It's in a good location, a good meetup spot, and we are gluttons for punishment so we will be back next time we are in the area.

I keep coming back for their homemade Sangria...white or red...they're both delicious. This place is ideal for having a drink. Inside, it looks like a cozy little tavern from history. It's a simple design that looks clean and traditional. They have some indoor seating and plenty of tables outside. I have had the cuban sandwich and shrimp skewers, both were well seasoned. I think what is really hurting this place is the service/management. It's really hit or miss with the servers. The first time we came we had a really entertaining server who brought our food out on time despite being double-sat. The next time there were only three other tables, but the server/bartender disappeared for some time without any communication on why our shrimp appetizer took so long. But he did let us know he had a meeting with the band and encouraged us to pay the bill. It's this kind of inconsistency in service that will decrease the chance of repeat customers. Personally, I will probably go back just for a glass of sangria...I really like it.

Shrimp tacos were delicious but super spicy. They say salsa but it's just chopped onions, jalapeños and tomatoes, which ruined them for my husband. I know we were eating outside but there were ghost ants all over the table and it was sticky. Mojito was eh and the queso was barely warm. Slowwww service.

Absolutely delightful! I have enjoyed many lunches and at the Taberna Del Caballo. Love the bartender Kelly. The server Nicole is more than efficient and professional. But if you have a chance to enjoy an event there it is a must. This beautifully seclude area hides in the heart of old St Augustine. Perhaps it's just a walk through the recreation passing through time. Taking in some history, Or just wet that thirsty whistle. Stop in here it is worth the experience. And don't forget the Bull and Crown!

I'll start with the positive side... The $5 sangria was nice. We then thought we'd try a couple tapas, chorizo cheese dip. Nothing more than cheese wiz and chopped up chorizo. Then we got brave and ordered a salad with chicken added to it. The chicken was over cooked and dry... It actually drew the moisture OUT of our mouths!! There just has to be better food elsewhere.

Mediocre food. Incredible atmosphere.we ate outside for dinner and loved it. The chorizo was good as were the chicken skewers. The mushrooms were terrible. We always order mushrooms at tapas restaurants and they are usually so flavorful and rich tasting. These tasted like boiled mushrooms. Zero flavors. Also the chips weren't too authentic. And they have a kids menu, but don't have milk.

One of the most authentic Old Town Spanish experiences. Bar is lit by oil lamps, best Sangria in town and food was decent.

WTF NO PITCHERS OF SANGRIA ANYMORE.... Outta here.... Slow enough service that a party of 5 can leave and no one noticed or cared... Tried to order at bar when found out no more pitchers... Don't be so cheap to your customers

This place was absolutely terrible! My friends and I all started off with sangrias (decent but it's kind of hard to mess that up). Then we got the queso con chorizo which is cheese whiz and chorizo. And it wasn't even warm. Then I got the cuban sandwich. I couldn't even eat it. The meat tasted really weird and I didn't want to risk it. Alas, we were too nice to send the food back but I will never go there again.

Our visit was very good. We liked the drinks and the food. Downfall was seeing one of the server making drinks and carrying food with her hair loose. I only hope nobody got any hairs on their food. On the plus side, great job doing the remodeling.

This claims to be a "Spanish" restaurant. We came on a Friday night. There was a person playing the guitar but to our dismay it was pop/county music rather than a Spanish guitarist. The menu also was a huge disappointment; when we asked the waitress if there was any Spanish food on the menu she answered, "quesadillas are good." I was expecting tapas or paella, but nothing. Overall I wouldn't come here if you are looking for Spanish food or experience.
