So delicious. I got there about an hour before it closed, so they had run out of every meat except the pork and turkey. Let me tell you. That pork did not disappoint. Excited to try the brisket next time!

Without question the best BBQ in the entire Duval area. Seriously, this place is a real gem, and worth the drive. I hop over from Orange Park once a month for a couple of lbs. of chopped pork. I don't eat it there cause I don't want to sit out in 100° heat, well that and the fact that they make sandwiches with Texas toast, which is a real No No. I thought about putting that extra star back on there when I was reminded that their chicken is equally delicious, and to my knowledge they are the only BBQ joint in N Florida that serves White BBQ sauce, an Alabama specialty. (and I guarantee nobody in the BBQ mecca of Alabama makes pulled pork sandwiches with friggin toast fer cryin out loud!) I can't tell you about their ribs cause they've always been sold out when I was there, but I'm told (by outside diners) that they are pretty damn good. All the sides are well done, and they have a variety of sauces to choose from. For my money its the best BBQ in 904, followed closely behind by G's Slow Smoked BBQ in Middleburg, and Gator's on the Westside. One thing to note about Smokin D's however.... no credit cards accepted, and they don't have an ATM machine.

Let me start by saying - "There's nothing about barbecue that's not controversial." This BBQ will trigger memories with its aroma and taste of smoke. If you're going to Bar-B-Que do it right and create an authentic experience, mission accomplished here. The focus here is on the BBQ, the staff is friendly enough they will let you know what's left to purchase. I was fortunate enough to get here mid afternoon and they still had ribs, chicken and chopped pork so I got a little of everything (I really wanted some turkey but oh well I should have arrived earlier). Looks like the hours are 11:00 am until the meat is gone. Ribs - Fresh off the pit smokey, perfect dry rub, tender and full of favor. I tried the sauce but I like mine naked. Chicken - Wow fall off the bone tender nice smoke and seasoned great if the turkey can top this I can't wait to come back. Chopped Pork - Yes chopped not shredded not sliced paper thin they only use real knives here, the bark and smoke was exceptional. This pork was chopped to about 1/2" cubes and was as tender as ham. I did get a few sides but decided to pass on them since the BBQ was so good. The iced tea was excellent oh I suggest bringing a few fold up chairs to set up under the tree if you plan to eat it here the alternative is finding a stump. I love this place absolutely some of the best BBQ in Florida and they easily out perform any of the regional or national chains and I've tried them all.

Great and tasty bbq that has a perfect amount of smoke flavor without be overpowering. I order d the pork sandwich and was FULL of meat and came with a side. It was chock full o' meat and the beans were not so bbq-y as more vinegar and a mix of pinto, black, and kidney. Both were good and well with the drive just off of 95. Prices are great for the taste and quantity. Note there is no interior dining.

Stopped here on the way to Orlando. Arrived just before there was a line out the door. The brisket and beans were my favorite- but everything was fantastic (we had chicken, ribs, and rice too). We will be back! Glad we stopped.

Never have i ever experienced a better bbq than smokin Ds!!!!! The sooner you get there the more options you have because once they run out of meat thats it! And i dont know how exactly to describe the customer service here these guys are hilarious

  • Anthony D.

My wife and I ordered the bbq picnic meal. The chicken was okay as well as the beans. The brisket was dry and the pork was absolutely inedible...the chopped pork was just chuncks of fat 95% of the portion.... the bbq sauce tastes store bought and the food was cool to warm. I dont know about the rest of the reviews here but eating food that is not hot is dangrous. Total price for the food i could have cooked better in my house was 26 dollars. If you love texas toast then this is the place to go. If you like bbq find a better place or cook at home.

It's Christmas Eve and we are driving down to Florida to visit the family. We decided to take a chance and detour off to this hidden jewel. However, it's not all that hidden once you venture off the highway. Awesome BBQ and their baked beans were super! The ribs were perfectly cooked. The turkey was juicy. They have several choices of sauce ranging from vinegar to sweet and spicy. No inside seating and cash or check only/no CC. There is a kangaroo gas station with an ATM inside. There are a few stumps for seating on the outside with a makeshift table which pairs well with the warm breeze, sweet ice tea and everything being served in butcher paper. I did notice that you could order whole hams or turkey. Perfect for Christmas or any day for that matter!

Pork Bucket! As you can see the empty pint bucket. Awesomely delicious! 1 pint of pork beans and rice! They open at 11am and if you're not here early it's a wait. Line of 10 before it opened. Oh yeah cash only!!

The best BBQ I've had in my life! All the sauces are amazing. I had the pork sandwich Carolina style (with vinegar sauce and cole slaw) I almost passed out it was so good. Hmmmmm I love a vinegar sauce and this is so good. Try the white sauce too if you like tangy. Had the yellow rice for a side, yum Only downside is that there is no where to sit. Didn't matter, we parked it on the curb. Amazing day

  • Frank D.

without question the best I've ever had! enough said. No wait, get the beans. ok, now I'm done.

They have white sauce!!!!! Huge plus. Solid bbq place, not at all fancy. Bring cash. I would recommend anything but the pulled pork, as it was too fatty.

I have to give credit where credit is due. Smokin D's is definitely worth my 5star rating. This place is the epitome of a good BBQ spot. Very casual and laid back no frills it is all about the food here. There are no waitresses or silverware or tables. You can tell when a spot serves good food when at lunch time pick-up trucks and blue collars fill the parking lot. I decided to try the half chicken with the white sauce and the sweet sauce. It was spot on BBQ perfection. The chicken was juicy and cooked perfectly with a nice kick of smoke. I was impressed. The white sauce is like a Cajun ranch sauce. For my sides I had the beans and a side of rice but ended up just mixing them together. The beans deserve some mention here: it is not your average baked beans. It comprises of 3 or 4 different types of bean with some bits of green pepper. If you love BBQ you can't not stop here. I am tempted to throw the clichè "best BBQ in St Augustine " out there but I will resort to the words of another diner eating in his big rig next to my truck "It doesn't get no betta than this, that was som good eatn'..."

Awesome BBQ! I had the 2 meat combo with chicken and turkey. For my two sides, I chose beans and rice. My Love got the large order of ribs (5 nice-sized ribs). The turkey was full of flavor and not dry AT ALL!! Win. Chicken was okay, great flavor but very small thigh piece was all they gave me. Ribs were fabulous. i had the two smaller ribs and they were a little tough but the large ribs were awesome. I think the prices are a little steep for the portion size but the flavor of the food is worth every penny. For both of our selections, the total was $29.25. Only real complaint is that the Texas toast was cold and toasted earlier in the day. Also, They only gave us one piece of toast per person. Should've got an extra side . Will definitely return for more!! 4 star flavor

Would for sure go back. BBQ is good, only downside not very much seating, plan to sit on haybales outside and it's a CASH only joint.

My husband loves BBQ, and of course, like everyone else, he has a favorite style. We were on our way back from the airport; it was lunch time, and we were hungry, so we picked up some food to take home. The sauces weren't bad, but the meats had an overpowering smokey taste. We actually couldn't finish eating it. I was glad to see we're not the only ones who were not impressed.

    (1)
  • Tim B.

Not a good 1st impression for me. Where do I start... Out of ribs, brisket, and chicken at 6pm, chopped pork was huge chunks not and much flavor, slaw was typical mayo, beans were just not good (no flavor) Wednesday special tasted like all the left over meat put in a pot and cooked for hours and smothered in BBQ sauce. The red sauce was good and the sandwich actually tasted better the next day. Everything comes on Texas toast which would have been good if it was fresh.

Stopped by on our way to Crescent Beach. Other reviews were accurate as to the seating - there is none - but that was okay. Nice looking building that smelled great as you approached and entered. Seemed clean. Staff wasn't overly friendly but not rude either. We got 1 lb of brisket, 1/2 pound of pork, a large tub of beans and a large tub of cole slaw. We weren't really prepared to eat at the beach - they only had forks to take with you. I didn't ask for paper plates, but my guess is that they didn't offer any. The pork was very good - well cooked and tasty. The beans were the highlight of the meal - there were three different types and they had a pleasant kick to them. The brisket was a bit tough and a little chewy. The sauces were very good (got the house and the hot). Unfortunately the cole slaw left a lot to be desired - very little seasoning! It was also a bit pricey as compared to some of the BBQ places of similar quality we have in Gainesville. I wouldn't mind trying them again on our next trip to the beach to see if our experience is the same.

Yumma yum yum! Juicy smokey tender delicious ribs, amazing multi-bean Baked Beans, tasty fresh Cole Slaw. We eat ribs everywhere we go...this has got to be one of the best we've had.

  • Missy J.

The best BBQ for miles!! My tip: get the white sauce with the turkey, it's addicting. My favorite sides are the slaw and beans. I love the relaxed, rustic outdoor seating and the full focus on BBQ. The service is always friendly and fast. The BBQ is always hot and fresh. Better than any chain out here!!

Yum! This is one of those places that make the US highways great, after dealing with hours of traffic and the terrible drivers in Florida stumbling across the smoke billowing from the. Little hut would make anyone stop! I stopped at about 12:30 and they were already out of brisket (they open at 11) so had a smoked turkey sandwich - delcicous, tender and just the right hunt of smokiness! Do note it is cash only!

    (5)
  • Ron R.

Turkey sandwich was outstanding! Didn't need sauce, but their house mustard sauce complemented the sandwich nicely. This is now my go-to BBQ stop on I95.

  • Dan G.

We found this place on accident. Without reading any reviews, we did not know what to expect. They had sold out of nearly everything except 1 lb of smoked turkey - which is the last thing we would have ordered. I can't wait to return to this quirky roadside joint. The owner is a purist and you eat it his way, not your way. I respect it and will be back again and again. The cold slaw, multiple sauce favors/styles (mustard, sweet, vinegar, etc) were great. The beans are particularly fabulous - three bean with just enough heat for flavor.

Brisket was really dry from the inside ... Chicken was little bit undercooked. But I love it. If I get a chance I will visit it again

I've been searching for my perfect BBQ place, too bad it's almost 2 hours away from me! After a nice beach day my husband and I decided to check out the BBQ place, because I LOVE MY BBQ! Let me tell you it's a first come first serve place! They start early and sell till it's gone! We had the brisket and the ribs, HOLY WHAT! So much juice, and the ribs melted off the bone! I enjoyed every second of the smokiness and authentic BBQ tastes this place put out. It's a BBQ recommendation I give out all the time, and if you go, make it a picnic bc there's no inside seating!

  • Jene I.

My boyfriend and I stopped here yesterday in the middle of a long road trip with a serious craving for BBQ. Soooo glad we did! We each had a brisket sandwich with the spicy BBQ sauce & baked beans and they were to die for. Don't be discouraged that this place is 2 miles off of 95. It's well worth the extra 5 minute drive past the crappy fast food joints!

  • Rich Z.

Amazing. Perfectly cooked and smoked. You cannot get this stuff up north. We pretty much tried everything on the menu and we were not disappointed by any item. Thank you

    (5)
  • Anthony C.

I found the food to be a bit better than your average barbecue restaurant. Service is not particularly friendly, but it was fast. I simply was not blown away as many of the previous reviews report. Service is take-out only.

    (3)
  • Marlee S.

If I could give it zero stars I would. The brisket was tough as hell and the pork was RAW. I'm not an idiot I know when it's smoked it can be a pinkish color but it was chewy and gelatinous. Not that it even mattered after that, but the sauces tasted like they came from the grocery store. I couldn't be more disappointed with that "meal" and the morons that gave this hovel 5 stars. I'm tempted to not use Yelp anymore if people consider this "good food".

    (1)
  • Jessica K.

I have went here several times and the food is good. Their beach buckets are terrific. I love the sauces as well. My favorites are the sweet one and the mustard one. I have enjoyed the pork and the brisket and both were delightful. I would highly recommend going to this place. It's sort of a take out situation. There's no where to sit and eat (we ate in the car.) Also, they only accept cash and checks so be prepared for that.

Very meaty St. Louis style ribs, a bit on the pricey side, but good meaty ribs, worth a try for anyone.

I know BBQ cause I've been to Memphis and I grew up in Texas. So you can trust me: Smokin' D's is very good BBQ. I've been coming to St. Augustine since I was a kid, pretty much yearly since the mid-90's when my parents retired from frigid Michigan to a condo on the beach. It's one of the coolest towns in Florida, with lots of history and great beaches (don't you love Washington Oaks after a big storm when the freshly washed up coquina sand makes the beach look pink?). But, let's face it, a lot of the food in FL sucks! My theory is that this is due to all the retirees who grew up in the US when food pretty much sucked everywhere. So now that they've retired to FL they just don't know any better and the market serves the lowest common denominator. But, thankfully, I have found things improving significantly in Augie over the past few years, and there are finally places worth eating at besides O'Steen's. Anyway, enough already, let's get to Smokin' D's 'que... This is a classic-looking, road-side BBQ shack (junction of 206 and Route 1, next to the gas station), with a small gravel parking lot, one picnic table, and a rusty old Mac pickup on the lawn that doubles as a bandstand for special events. If smoke is coming out of the stack, they are open. But SD's closes when they run out, so call ahead if you really want something in particular (I missed out on the white chicken on my first visit this season, which left me in a bad mood for the rest of the day!). You can see there menu here, which features all the usual stuff, so I won't go into every detail: smokindbbq.org/site/down… But a few things worth highlighting: 1) "Wet Wednesday" -- What a great idea! Take all the leftover meat, 5-different cuts in all, chop it up, slow-cooker in BBQ sauce for 4 hours, and slap it on thick Texas toast. This is a KILLER sandwich (see photo), although I think they could pile it on a bit thicker. Unfortunately, only available on Wednesdays. 2) Beans -- As other reviews have mentioned, these are the best beans I've ever had, better even than my Mom's (which is saying something). 3 different beans, onions, pork butt (I would like more bigger chucks) and 4 different peppers, medium thick. Good stuff! 3) Alabama "White" chicken -- OMG, this is worth driving for! To be honest, I've never had white chicken BBQ anywhere else, so it was something of a revelation to me. If you're a Yankee, this is nothing like Cornell chicken (the sauce is slathered on just before serving). I know, a mayo-based BBQ sauce (quite vinegary actually) sounds bizarre, but combine that creamy tang with perfectly moist, dry-rubbed chicken, and I spent the entire year thinking about it. Actually, since I was so busy in Augie last year, I never even made it to SD's and had to go 2 years without it, which was traumatic. Trust me, there are not a lot of foods that I daydream about, but this is one. As far as the other meats, I like the ribs, dry-rubbed, with your choice of sauces (unfortunately, having to share with my Mom, I haven't really explored the sauces and usually just get the Memphis sweet, which is decently tangy but not particularly notable), perfect amount of fat, and definitely not fall-off-the-bone (sorry to tell you guys, if it's falling off the bone, that means it is over-cooked!). Don't usually get the brisket, so I can't comment on other's opinions that it is over-cooked. Cole slaw is good, but nothing notable. Friendly, quick service, you only have to figure out where to eat it: 1) SD's picnic table (boring, with view of busy intersection); 2) on the hood of your rental Mustang (cool); or 3) take quick drive down to one of the beach accesses on A1A South, like at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park (awesome). CASH ONLY! Don't forget the beer. Sláinte! [Actually, the only time I've been to Memphis, for a job interview at St. Jude's, I didn't try the BBQ. And I hate Texas. So I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but at least I know better than to take BBQ advice from a hoagie-eater in GA with a Norwegian name. Bite me!]

We always have to stop at Smokin D's for lunch a couple of times while we stay in St Augustine. Their BBQ is the best around and their prices are great as well.

    (5)
  • Edward J.

Ok its so good I will pay whatever. Give me that sauce. Beans are great. Seating is some logs around a bigger log. At the intersection of SR 206 and US 1.

    (5)
  • Susan S.

You've GOT to be kidding me! Husband's chopped pork was dangerously under cooked. If it weren't for my turkey sandwich (which I shared) we would have gone hungry. You people that gave this a five star rating need to get out more.

Saw the sign for Smokin D's on I95. Never heard of it, had no idea what it was. Husband looked it up (he's obsessed with BBQ) and wanted to go. Now we had to find a reason to make a trip that far south. Well, when your car dealership is only six miles up the road, it's the perfect excuse to stop in to get some BBQ. There's no real seating, but you will see plenty of people sitting in their cars, standing & eating over the hood, sitting in the open hatch back or even sitting on a tree stump. It's that good! You don't want to have to wait until you get home. I've had the pork sandwich which is delicious. My husband has tried the Beach Bowl and the ribs. Loved everything. For sides you can choose from beans, slaw, or rice. I was a little surprised by the beans the first time because they're not you're traditional bbq sweet baked beans. But they're delicious and very tasty. It would not take too much to convince me to go for a drive from some good 'cue.

  • Ken G.

As we travel south we always like to jump off the Interstate and check out the local BBQ places. Smokin' D's is just a short distance off I-95 and well worth the trip. We both had the pulled pork, beans with rice and cole slaw. All the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We found the staff friendly and helpful in helping us decide what to order. Be aware that there is no indoor seating. Expect to either eat at one of the picnic tables, your car, or take the food with you. Regardless, this is a stop that you will enjoy.

  • Tuh T.

Pros: great bbq smoked all day long. Ribs and pork are best, but you can't go wrong with any of the menu itesms. Cons: bring cash or check, they don't accept card. Some outdoor seating, but it's useless if it's raining. No bathroom, but they're next to a gas station. The meat comes in a paper wrap like a sub. I thought it was charming but others might find it inconvenient.

    (4)
  • Terry G.

Briskit was tough along with the ribs, which are not babyback. Sauce leaked out of the ribs when we got home, beats leaking on my car's leather seats. They do not package anything, wrap it in paper and into the bag. Chicken was very good. The food in these ratings are over-rated. Portions not large, spent $30 for two dinners and were hungry when done. Mojos in St. Augustine has much better BBQ.

    (3)
  • J Matt S.

"I started working on yesterday, what you were going to come in and order today", pretty much sums it up. This was the answer to my question "So you guys must get up awfully early?". These guys start smoking meat in the wee hours of the morning (or in some cases the night before), and then sell like crazy until they run out. This place is cash only, and I found the food to be a pretty good bargain. My wife and I got a brisket sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich, so we could try each. We preferred the pulled pork, but both were very good. They offer several styles/types of BBQ sauce, named for the states they match. We tried the Carolina sauce, which was good, but I was left wishing they had an even sweeter Kansas City style sauce. My wife said their coleslaw was absolutely perfect. I had the baked beans and they were very unique, reminding me of chili. I would have also preferred if the baked beans were sweeter, but that's probably because I have an unquenchable sweet tooth. We will definitely return.

  • Leo B.

Good bbq spot. my wife and i came across it on our way to st augustine and so we gave it a shot and was ok, but in all honesty i was hoping to be a little better. I ordered the bbq ribs along with beans and slaw. the bbq was not as tender and fall off the bone as i had hoped and the bbq sauce was just ok. my wife had the bbq chicken and she seemed to think it was smokie and tender. the place is small with not too many places to eat so we just ate in the car which was fine, but kinda messy.

    (3)
  • Gaby S.

This may be as good as it gets for the St. Augustine area. We ordered the sampler platter with turkey, pork, and brisket. The turkey was deliciously moist, the brisket was dry and over cooked, and the pork could use more rub seasoning. The sides were ok as well: rice, coleslaw, and beans. The only side that impressed us was the baked beans. Using three style beans gave it a different flavor and the spices were gave it a perfect flavor combination. Negatives: they don't accept credit cards (but the gas station behind has an ATM) and there is no place to sit.

  • Matt W.

Reasonable price, good barbecue, great sauces, friendly people. Smokin' D's BBQ is near Crescent Beach, a bit off the path from a Saint Augustine trip, unless you happen to be visiting Fort Matanzas like we were. We didn't try the sides, but just had pork. It was chopped, inner and outer pieces, but all of it was delicious. Prices are very reasonable, and they sell their products "until they run out." Good sweet tea. The setting is perfect for barbecue as well. This is barbecue served in a very great homage to the traditional barbecue shack. Being from the South we still have these all over, but this was the only one I encountered while on my trip to Saint Augustine, and it was a great example of that fun and time-honored concept! The sauces are probably the highlight. From what I can tell they are homemade and served on the side in small plastic containers. I tried both the "Alabama White" and "Texas Heat" and both were great. The Alabama White has a flavor of horseradish and pepper, and is unusual but delicious. The Texas Heat is hot but also a little sweet. Both were a great compliment to some very good barbecue. Give this place a try if you are in the area, but be prepared: there are no tables at which to eat, so either eat in your car or drive somewhere. There is a small recreational/conservation area to the east that might be a good choice (Moses Creek) but we just took the easy way and ate in the car. It didn't last long anyway!

Amazing amazing amazing simply amazing. We tried everything. The brisket was my least favorite but I don't like brisket. Everything else was to die for. Oh my, the beans were the best beans I have ever had they are so tasty. What a great find. in September we were back we drove straight from NY to smoking d's door. just what we needed after we drove such a long way real BBQ. we also extended our trip by two days so we could be there for wet Wednesday which we had totally forgotten about till we looked at the back of the menu. so glad we extended our time well worth it. we also brought chopped pork and turkey home for the ride with us. they also had some new shirts and we bought a couple. can' wait can't wait. it is gonna be to long until we are back

  • Jared S.

My favorite BBQ chopped pork ever. Sauces are awesome, sides are good. We have tried other meats, but I end up going back to the chopped pork every time. We have ordered our Thanksgiving turkey here the last two years.

Excellent BBQ. Great sauces. Quaint small location. Outdoor seating or take out only. Really authentic Memphis BBQ. Close to I95 so I recommend if you are traveling on the interstate. It's not far off the interstate so you can get a nice meal and continue on your way

    (4)
  • Heather M.

Super yummy and you don't feel nasty after eating because they use such high quality meats that are lean. I had my chopped pork sandwich open-faced to really enjoy the taste (went with the Texas heat sauce, which is perfect and not really spivey in the conventional sense). The place is clean and it's fun to eat in the shaded parking lot (hood of car makes a great eating surface!) The cole slaw is crisp and refreshing, not loaded down with mayonnaise, and the bean side is really unique. You should definitely hit this place up, particularly if you're driving on 95--it's just a few minutes east. I'm looking forward to the next visit!

If you search Yelp® for BBQ or Barbecue or Barbeque or even HOW IS BABBY FORMED near St Augustine, FL, what you'll get is a list of the crappiest chain joints in Florida, but NO Smokin' D's. What a shame that Yelp's search feature is so poorly coded that it's unable to find what is clearly the BEST barbecue in the area. Florida's not really known for BBQ. We have a lot of crappy chains like Woody's and Sonny's and Bono's and Sonny Bono's and Chaz's and Cher's but not a lot of what I would consider the real deal. Florida has no BBQ identity. There's no such thing as "Florida BBQ". It's sort of odd, especially in the North, since it's so friggin' South! All you southern purists are going to start bitching and moaning at what I have to say, but some of the best BBQ I've ever had was in NY and Los Angeles. Allright allright, LISTEN... You can STFU you backwater hicks. You've never been 2 miles out of your county so you can't say shit. I've been all over the south and midwest. Texas, Kansas City, Chicago, the Carolinas. I've had the best and the worst, and it you want consistently excellent BBQ, hit the big cities, bring your #2 pencils and notepads and prepared to be schooled. In a real city you can get ANYTHING YOU WANT. You want par-boiled baby balls in LA, I can get it. Clubbed baby seal sushi in NYC, comin' up! That's just how it is. Now, having said that, I will say that the BEST of the best BBQ in the USA is in the South. Personally, I'm particular to the low country stuff served up at places like Melvin's and Bessinger's near Chucktown, SC. But anyway, BACK to the review of Smokin' D's. I've been looking for some decent BBQ since moving to FL over a year ago and all I've found is shit. But now it looks like I have finally found a place worthwhile. These people clearly prepare their food with love. The menu is simple, the way it should be. There's absolutely no pretense. They put all of their heart and soul into it. Clearly they are experts at what they do. We took our cue (haha) from Bill M. and got the 'bama chicken and the meat plate. OMFG! The worse thing I could say about the brisket was that it was a little dry, but it was late in the day and I drove 1/2 hour to get it. Even so, it was delicious, especially with the Texas heat. The Pork was great, tender and moist, with their house sauce. All in all the best I've had here. I will go NO WHERE ELSE for BBQ while I'm here. Florida, I hate you. But places like Smokin-D's helps me stay sane in one of the most insane states in the country.

Don't you hate those reviews that start with I know BBQ cause I've been to Memphis or I grew up in Texas. Well bite me Texas, no one likes you and your stupid beef brisket. Grow up! Anyway this is decent beach BBQ. Enjoyed the smoked turkey and the beans best. The ribs were so so and the coleslaw was mayonaise based which I hate. Lord do I hate that. I'd go again just to break up the stream of seafood. So long and short decent BBQ, decent price just not life changing as in Danny Edwards KC BBQ good. Oh takeout only and I believe cash only as well

Great BBQ!! I had the ribs which were excellent; the Memphis sweet sauce was outstanding and the Georgia mustard (House) was good. The beans were great, with an authentic smokey flavor. Other members of my party had the pulled pork, which I tried, also excellent. Someone else had the chicken and said it was tender and flavorful. The service was absolutely outstanding; the young man behind the counter was helpful and very nice. He gathered our order quickly with a great attitude. A very nice place and experience. Get it to go and keep in mind they only take cash or check.

Driven right by this little treasure every time we head to the condo at Crescent Beach. Finally, we stopped! I consider myself a pro at judging a BBQ place by its pork sammich. The pork sammich here was fantastic! The slaw (which I believe it should automatically come with instead of being a side - but I digress) was mild and perfectly complimented the sweet sauce I selected. The meat was juicy and flavorful sans sauce as well. Don't plan on dining in here. Everything is to go. Eat your Q in the car or bed of your truck for best results. Ours traveled well about 5 miles. Well, sort of. Hubby had to stop at a convenience store and I couldn't wait. I dug in. Only half of my sammich made its way to the condo and I ate it standing up at the counter because I couldn't wait to finish it! We leave tomorrow. Gonna have to swing back by for one more sammich for the road. They don't accept credit cards or debit cards and they close when the meat's gone.

Great BBQ, but don't plan on eating there. Best to take home considering the seating arrangements . Have had them do large orders for parties which is usually a let down. But small orders for family are great. They close when the run out of food, so go early to ensure you have every menu item available. The rub the se on the ribs is very good!!!

It's good, yet uninspired. All the sides are served in little plastic containers. Like tasting cups at an ice cream store. No more than 4 OZ portions. The meat is decent, and like any other smoked food is dry. It really is take out only. I live 60 miles away. If you want you can sit on a log and eat in their parking lot. I don't care for their sauces either. The owner is Canadian, and this is the Deep South. Mustard sauce is a must

Not the very best barbecue I ever ate, but it is WAY above and beyond anything I expected to find near the beach in the St. Augustine, Florida area, and would stand out as tasty 'cue and a good value just about anywhere. I visit this area at least once a year lately to visit my girlfriend's family with her, and we always make a stop here for take-out on the way back from Crescent Beach, and it is always good. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the stand-out item for me so far is the chicken with Alabama white sauce. I also enjoyed the chopped pork sandwich and the house (mustard-based) barbecue sauce. Sides, in my experience, are serviceable but not spectacular. Cash or check only.

Honestly, this is the best BBQ you'll get in St. Augustine, and maybe Jax too. Probably Palm Coast too, idk. It's not always open when you expect it to be, but it's worth planning your day around. "When we're smokin', we're open" is their sign outside. So essentially when they sell out, they're done for the day. There's nowhere to sit inside this shack, but you can sit out in the parking lot, like most patrons. Everything is good. Everything!!!!! And the price is definitely right. They decorate the pig at holidays. It's cute.

There is nothing like great BBQ. I prefer local, off the beaten path BBQ joints with personality, and, most importantly, great BBQ. Smokin' D's exceeds these standards. Their ribs are in such high demand you had better keep that in mind when you feel a BBQ hankerin' comin' on because there is always a run on them. Of course, if you're one of the poor souls that was too late, your BBQ fix will be pleasantly satiated with their brisket, chicken, turkey, et al. Drive past the chain wanna be's and head to Smokin' D's. 5 stars. BOOM!

Smokin' D's fits the true definition of bbq shack- a one room building with the pit on one end and a small ordering counter on the other. And if you're hungry, bring your cash, because they don't take credit cards. There is no inside seating, but they have a good sized parking area, a few chairs and maybe a picnic table under a tree out back. Inside, the building was quiet and empty except for the two man crew pulling meat off the brick pit and pouring sauce into plastic cups. It was 2:30 in the afternoon so I imagine they were catching up from the lunch crowd. I was in the mood for a light lunch, so I ordered a chopped pork sandwich with bbq beans as the side and of course a sweet tea. They quickly packaged my order along with a cup of sweet sauce and I was on my way. The bite-size chunks of pork were piled high on toasted white bread. The meat was so moist it almost burst as I bit into it. While it was well-smoked, there was little bark to give any extra flavor, so I found myself dipping some of the chunks in the (quite good) sauce for a little more kick. I'm glad I chose beans as my side, because they were hands down the best I've ever had. They had little or no tomato sauce in them but had a hint of brown sugar and bits of smoky meat that made them absolutely delicious. I would go back just for their beans. The pork was very respectable even if it could have used more flavor, and I hope I do get back sometime to try their other meats.

Overpriced, cold and fatty bbq. The Texas toast was sitting on the counter with about 50 other slices that had been toasted some time before. I travel quite a bit and have had bbq in many places, this is at the very bottom of the list. I will never go again.

finally got a chance to visit the pork was cooked and smoked perfectly but the brisket was to lean and was a little tough BBQ sauces were very good, you can tell they truly are homemade wish I could give 5 stars like everyone else I was going to rate a 3, but upgraded to a 4 because they do BBQ justice price is right toasted Texas bread but without the slabbed on garlic butter allowing you to taste the BBQ

Off the hook BBQ, only a few minutes off 95. The beans and yellow rice are to die for (hint, if your meal only comes with one side, ask for half rice & half beans), and the chicken was the best I ever had - moist, fall off the bone and the skin was so good the hell with the extra calories. My boys shared pulled pork sandwich and rib lunch, and they loved them both. We'll be stopping again on our way north. Take out or eat outside on a hay bale or under an umbrella, stand-up style. I loved their sign out front, "bikers & Yankees welcome". This Yankee can't wait to go back there!

Just amending my previous review. Up from 4 to 5 stars. This place never fails, despite the occasionally over or under "weighing" of by the pound meat. However, the turkey is crazy delicious, and the house sauce is worth sipping on its own.

I would not recommend this place to anyone unless I knew they were looking to eat the worst BBQ they have ever had. I ate the beef brisket with the house BBQ sauce. I feel like I might puke. The bread was texas toast style white an was really dry. The meat wasn't cooked and was very dry. The BBQ sauce had a mild flavor. I also had the beans as a side. I threw them out after two bites. The only thing this place has going for it is the outside appearance. Judging from my first look I would have expected awesome authentic BBQ. I was wrong. Also, CASH ONLY. Gotta love that! IT'S 2012.

If you like meat, you'll like this place. If you like smoked meat, you'll love this place. My take, this place is excellent. Here's a write-up on the place when it was still new (it opened in March 2008): historiccity.com/2008/04… . First, the recommendation (assuming two people). Get the Alabama Chicken dinner and the Mixed Meat Platter. On the platter, get brisket and pork. They have three sides, you get three sides, so you get to have all of them, but I'd leave the rice, and get two orders of the baked beans. The cole slaw is very good. Total price was $21. I left them a couple of bucks in the bucket for the free sample of the beans (and the friendly service). Now, what about this place. First, the meat comes with no sauce and fortunately requires no sauce. The sauces are excellent, so plan to taste the meat first, then dip in the sauce of your choice. They give you the meat you order and a bunch of sauces (two 1/4 cup containers of each). The kid that takes the order is the owner's son. Oh yeah, then he serves you. This is no frills. There's a counter, the food prep area, the Iced Tea stand and a unisex restroom. The meats: Chicken Brisket Pork Turkey The sauces: Memphis Sweet - good, only a little sweet Texas Heat - not hot, spicy, that tastes like it has a little Jack (Daniels, that is) D's House - spicy, tangy, tasty, their best imho Carolina Vinegar - lived in Raleigh for 7 years, not Eastern NC style. They say it comes from the Piedmont. That's no-man's land in NC BBQ. It ain't western and it ain't eastern. Their sauce is a mix and not that great, again, imho. The sides: Bodacious Baked Beans - unbelievable, mixture of pork, baked beans, black beans and kidney beans, plus a few veggies and a killer base Cole slaw - simple and good, nothing spectacular Yellow Rice - just yellow rice In summary, this is just plain good eating.

Great smoked meats! My partner's family is all about BBQ and could eat it every single day. Luckily for me we ran across Smokin' D's and with all the other helpful reviews from fellow Yelpers we knew we could not go wrong suggesting it to the family. The sauces are so good! I wish we had purchased a bottle of sweet sauce - although I'm not quite sure this is even an option. I'm not one for baked beans really but their baked beans were bangin', with a wide variety of beans and rich smokey flavor.

Found this joint on the way to Amelia Island. Pork sandwich was delicious - tender and juicy. The sides of beans and coleslaw were also great. And loved the sweet and vinegar sauces The one disappointment was the brisket -- dry and chewy.

I went to this spot while visiting my folks in St. Augustine. I had been to Bono's a number of times and been very satisfied with their food, so I was a bit hesitant to try Smokin' D's....Until I read the across the board positive reviews. And they were no lie. I got the mixed meat platter with the brisket and pork and both were excellent, though I prefered the brisket slightly. The beans are, by far, the best side. The sweet tea is a nice touch as well. The service was great and, again, it was important to note that there are no seats in the place and they do not take credit card... Next time I visit I will be sure to make a return trip and buy enough for leftovers.... Very impressive all around experience.

This is really the best BBQ I have had anywhere in this area. Just read Bill's review and you will know everything you need to know about the place. I have tried everything but the brisket and it is all great. The baked beans are different then your usual baked beans, but much better in my opinion. The guys working there are very nice also. It does not look like much from the outside and like people mention there is no where to sit, but do yourself a favor a stop by if you are ever in the area. Also bring cash, no credit card accepted. There is a store with an ATM across the parking lot though.

pretty good pork sandwich, smokey flavor was good. meat was tender and moist. got the house sauce which is a mustard type of bbq sauce, new to me, tasted pretty good. I got the coleslaw as a side and that was nice as well. good sandwich. Drink options are only sweetened and unsweetened iced tea, which was ok by me. make sure you read the parking sign.

I really wanted to love this place. It has all the trimmings of a fantastic bbq experience. But sorry to say the flavor was lacking. We had the sampler meat platter and chose brisket, ribs, and chopped pork. All had a good smoke flavor, not too overwhelming. But there was no appreciable rub on the meats and not even salt that I could tell. The meats were tender enough. I did enjoy the bean side, and the sauces were tasty. Noting all of the great reviews - I'm hoping they had an off day. We will try it again and hope for better results.

First of all the place was packed with enthusiastic patrons who regularly enjoy the food. I was not one, however. No tables, just an 8 x 10 room with a bathroom in it. Place your order and wait. Couple of tree stumps outside if you want to sit there and eat. I was hoping for a pulled pork sandwich that had been mixed with a sauce. They don't do that and clearly state that the sandwich is chopped meat. It comes dry and you add your choice of sauce. The meat is freshly chopped and served on Texas toast brushed with garlic butter. It's just a thick slice of square ordinary white bread with a few grill marks and quickly gets soggy. The meat is smoked on premises, but the smoke flavor has a strong petroleum tinge that I don't like. Slaw is good and the baked beans are served with a generous portion of black beans. I won't be back but they sure don't need me. There's a really neat old truck parked out front. And the sign inside reads, "This ain't Burger King. You get it our way or you don't get the damn thing." You got to admire and respect that.

We love Smokin D's!!! We drive down from Jacksonville to eat here everytime we go to St. Augustine. We've taken friends from out of state here to experience Florida BBQ. Anytime we are on our way back from Orlando or Ft Lauderdale we stop too. Just a few minutes off of I-95. The brisket is sensational, the ribs amazing and pork wonderful. The turkey is the best of all Jacksonville BBQ restaurants, not a turkey roll-real turkey breast meat. Nothing beats the BBQ beans. The best i've ever had and all my guests from out of state agree.. Bring cash, they do not take credit cards.. Sandwiches and dinners include a tea or soda.. cant wait to go back ...

Im really confused at all the good reviews for this place. I was really excited about going based on the reviews here while I'm staying here in St Augustine. I'm no BBQ snob, in fact I'm really easy to please, but this place was really subpar. The ribs were tough. It took a lot of effort to pull them apart and they were almost impossible to pull the meat off the bone using teeth alone. There's no excuse for that. I've had beef ribs from many places that fell off the bone. The pork sandwhich was just as difficult. The wife and kids threw their food out half way through and I didn't finish my ribs. It was too much of a hassle to bother with. It was really disappointing based on the reviews here and the look of the place. It looks like it would be great. The sauces were good and so was the baked beans. I wouldn't go back though. Meat was unacceptable. Eat here if you have never had fall off the bone ribs otherwise you will also be let down.

You just have to love the places like this. Little shacks on the side of the road. When you pull up the smell is intoxicating. I had the chopped bbq and the wet Wednesday. Awesome, awesome, awesome BBQ!! The best BBQ in St. Augustine!

This place is an experience! Someone said there's no place to sit. You should've asked when you picked up your order: if you notice, outside there are some flat logs standing vertically. You sit on the short ones, and eat off the medium ones. Food is as has been described in other reviews.

It has slipped since it was first opened, but hands down it is the best BBQ around the area!! The chicken is delicious and moist. The pork is done right. The ribs are hit or miss. I love how they use the wood for natural flavoring, but sometimes they can be a lil tough as is the brisket. Sauces are good too!Priced fair. I love going there for take out or to sit outside by truck.

My dad and uncle always stop here on their way to Georgia, and told us that we should as well. It was amazing! Everything was wood-smoked, there was great sauces, the flavor of the chicken I had was great, and the prices were reasonable. Definitely worth the detour. Just know that there is no seating--you have to sit in your car to eat!

Quite simply the best BBQ I had in Florida and Southern Georgia. Wet Wednesdays are great when they serve up their version of a sloppy. Also, their smoked turkey tastes better than ham along with their house mustard sauce.

I have found the promised land and it's name is Smokin D's in St Augustine and only two hours north of home! I am on the road on business ALOT, and being from Texas I entertain myself by looking for the perfect BBQ shack since my personal theory is chains just cant do BBQ right cuz they got no soul, man, and too much stanless steel. I had ribs, pork and chicken the first time but was able to have the brisket a month later when i was passing through again (whereupon i bought four lbs of meat to take home with me, cuz thats all the cash i had on me. Damn the luck If the ONLY place I've found in the southeast, with decent brisket was out for the day my first trip a month ago. So I chatted with Daryl the owner back then in the parking lot and he said give him a call... in the mornin next time I'm up and he'll save me a few pounds. Best BBQ I've had since movin to Florida from Texas. They have great sauce's and fantastic beans but really "the only ting dat meat needs is eatin!!" as Daryl quoted from his blues singing friend. However, if i were to have to rank the meat in order of excellence i would but the chicken on top (off for me since after living in the Caribbean for four years i swore off chicken forever, then the pork (thick chunks of pig heaven), then ribs and then brisket. But keep in mind I'm a Texas brisket purest. This brisket is the BEST ive had in the southeast so far with its great black seasoned skin, pink smoky ring and thick slices, but it still could use to be a more tender as you should be able to easily pull it apart with your fingers, something most Texas BBQ cant pull off regularly. For now, Smoky D's is my Mecca between trips back to see family in Texas.

This place has nailed it. Its what BBQ is supposed to be. No frills, no thrills, just pure smokey goodness. I've been in Sonny's, Bono's, been to various rib fests and to mom and pop bbq joints from here to NC and out to OK and this place stands head and shoulders above anything I've had before. You must try their bbq beans.....uniquely delicious.
