On the other side of the coin from my recent Madre's review: NO, El Potro. FUCK YOU. Because of you, El Potro, everyone around St. Augustine thinks that Mexican food means some bland-assed piles of canned crap dumped on a plate. Some genius looked around town, realized that good Mexican food is scarce, and figured that they could probably get away with charging the Wal-Mart crowd ten bucks for anything as long as they slap "Authentic" on the sign. Well, El Potro, I've lived in Los Angeles. I have eaten the food of Mexico; the kind that comes from illegal foodservice trucks that have to change position to open up every night. It is AMAZING. And you? You are garbage, El Potro. You are a Mexican restaurant and you don't even make Margaritas with TEQUILA? I know a hard liquor license costs more, but for fuck's sake, it's not like you are spending top dollar on such as "flavor" or even "salt", guys. Look, I know the taste palate around this area doesn't go for much flavor. I've been to the restaurants, I've seen people bitch about horribly boring salsas and sauces being WAY TOO SPICY. Maybe this is the demographic to which you are attempting to appeal. But, come on. Do not hang a sign outside advertising authentic Mexican and then serve me this. You are ruining the name of Mexican food for all these unknowing people, El Potro's, and this is an intervention. Stop it.

This place is far enough from downtown that we picked it just so we would not have to fight for a place to park in downtown St. Augustine. We were not expecting much just some place to grab some dinner. It was way better than I expected. We ordered the Queso and it was very good. For dinner I had the shrimp quesadilla and my husband had a taco and two cheese enchiladas. My shrimp quesadilla were very good! The shrimp was cooked PERFECT! The flavors of the onions, peppers and cheese were delightful. My husband said that the taco was amazing and that the cheese enchiladas were good too. I ordered a margarita and it was very yummy as well. The rice that came with both our meals was a little bland but that is my only complaint. Overall very happy with the food and service.

Have been here several times, always great food. I have tried a variety of menu items and always happy with the food. They have a great happy hour, no entertainment, but if you are looking for good food, casual mexican fare then this is the place in St Augustine.

We love this place! Good food, consistent and flavorful. Prices are inexpensive.

Great food! Inexpensive. Parking is in back and on the side so it looks like no one is there, but they are. Best Mexican food I have ever had. Convenient to hotel just across the street. I wish it was closer to where I live. We would eat there at least once a week!

I've been here twice and enjoyed my food both times. Unfortunately St. Augustine is in dire need of Mexican places, and this is usually my and my roommate's first choice. However, the servers weren't very friendly.

Inexpensive quality mexican food with no pretense. The food was delicious and the service was polite and genuine. I had a monster burrito, excellent chicken (or steak if you choose). It was 12 inches packed with tender fajita chicken breast, grilled onions and peppers. Covered in cheese sauce and served with sour cream, guac, rice and beans. The rice wasnt good and I believed it was nuked which is the only reason I held my 5th star. My dinner guest had the Chicken Mole' enchiladas which were equally impressive. Also the BEST ICED TEA I'VE HAD IN YEARS. This meal was as good as any I've had in my life in Texas.

We eat at this Mexican restaurant every time we're in St. Augustine. Normally, it's just the 2 of us, but this time, we brought 2 friends with us. The food was great as always, but, there were 2 problems w/the atmosphere. There was a ceiling fan right above our table that was so high it literally cooled our food before we could finish eating it. Also, there was a guitar player who played nice flamenco music,...but, it was entirely too loud for a small place like this. We asked if they would please lower the volume, but, it stayed the same & our conversation was literally blown away by the loudness. Naturally, this had to happen when we brought our friends w/us and had told them how great the restaurant was. Also, the floors were not very clean either, and usually they are quite clean. We were embarrassed as we had bragged so much about El Potro. We hope to go again next time we're in St. Augustine, but hope that these things won't happen again as we do plan on bringing guests again.

My husband and I eat here probably once a week. This is hole-in-the-wall good food, so don't expect 5-star meals or service. Prices are reasonable and the service has been great except for one time (and we've eaten here 10 or 12 times). Business is steady with a few busy spurts, so you won't worry about not getting a seat. I'd pick this place over any California-style Mexican food any day!

My wife and I ate here during our stay in St. Augustine, and I must say the food was excellent. The amount of food we received was very filling and the service was decent. I would definately recommend this establishment to anyone who loves Mexican food.

My boyfriend and I wanted to find some authentic Mexican food, so we decided to try this place and loved it. Very good enchiladas and rice. The nachos with beans and cheese were hands down the best I've ever had. We ordered sangria; the pitcher was huge and it was delicious. My only gripe is the service. The waitresses were just standing behind the counter ignoring us. We stood there awkwardly for a few minutes before seating ourselves, then someone came over. The place was pretty empty, so it isn't like they were slammed and couldn't acknowledge us right away. Other than that, the experience was great.

Pleasant surprise! I was born and raised in S.Cal and have relocated to the east coast. I LOVE and miss the Mexican food I used to get back home in California. This is the best I've had since relocating.

Very disappointed! This restaurant was across the street from my hotel. The reviews weren't bad, and it was just starting to rain. I ordered a glass of Cabernet and a nice water while I looked at the menu. I was given the coldest glass of wine I've ever seen without ice in it. Also chips and very spicy, very delicious salsa ( but in a styrofoam cup). I then ordered a chicken enchilada, and queso fundido y chorizo. The food came very quickly. I taste the wine is horrible. I let it sit for a few more minutes so that it is not so cold, taste it again, and it is just horrible! I think it was in the fridge for a few days and turned. The chicken enchilada was delicious. Good meaty, and a nice mole sauce. The queso was soupy with a thick layer of chorizo grease floating on top, making it even runnier. I said something to the waiter about it being extremely soupy and not having a spoon to even get some out of the bowl to put on a tortilla. He never did anything about it, nor the terrible wine ( rung as merlot). I made sure that the hotel knew of the poor food and wine. I'm sure they will consider this information before recommending the restaurant to other hotel guests!

This is a great restaurant as far as the food and service. Tables are a bit small and the seats a bit worn, but the food is great and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Parking is excellent. Everything on the menu averages between $10.00-$12.00. We had a Chimichanga special for $7.95 each that included beans and a salad and it was great! Coming back for sure...

This is a small restaurant, the waitstaff was very pleasant and friendly. We had to wait to be seated because half the tables needed bussing, which was cleaned up pretty quickly. We had the Fish Tacos, which were very good, not the best I've had, but very good. Nachos Supremo were a bit mushy. Margarita on the rocks, very good, didn't skimp on the Tequila. Great for a quick bite, not a fancy nite.

The best Mexican restaurant in all St. Augustine... . Enchiladas , burritos , guacamole and chips .... Try the Dos X BEER . Always in frozen mugs . It's a small place maybe .... But it's good .. You wold see ..

Epitomy of suck. Basically empty restaurant and told us there was a 10 minute wait. Rude and no one ever said anything to us after we sat and waited. Won't be going back for sub par Mexican.

Waited 5 minutes before being greeted. All the waitresses walked right by me never saying a word.

Great mexican food at a good price. The steak is rib eye cut and is declious. The salsa is great tool! They have hotter salsa in the back that you have to ask for and it's hot. Our whole family loves it!!

This is one of the few Mexican food restaurants I'm willing to go in the Jacksonville/Saint Augustine area. I work not far from here and eat here probably once a week for lunch. The prices are reasonable, the lunch service is quick, and the food is authentic. I particularly like the Lunch Fajitas for flavor, presentation, & value ($10 for more than I can eat). The staff is very friendly, albeit a little unconventional. They frequently have their baby behind the counter being spoonfed his lunch, or when you walk in the hostess will jump up from a booth where she was sitting to seat your party. (But IMO that just makes it feel like a family-run establishment and adds to the overall experience.)

Delicious, reasonably priced authentic Mexican meals. We have been enjoying dinners at El Potro for more than 15 years. Every meal has been a wonderful tasty experience. A restaurant can only stay in business if they offer consistent quality, fair pricing and a good experience. El Potro does all this and more. Bring the family and enjoy real Mexican at Gray prices. I had enchiladas and my wife had a three item special with an enchilada, chile relleno and tamale. Generous portions and very reasonable drink prices. We highly recommend! El Potro is one of St Augustine's well kept secrets.

Cheap, delicious Mexican food within walking distance of our hotel! I'll take it! We stayed across the street at the Country Inn & Suites, and came here with the kids for dinner. Decent margaritas, chips & salsa that hit the mark, and satisfactory tacos, quesadillas, and burritos were had by all. Wouldn't hesitate to visit again!

Place looks a little run down, like a "dive" Mexican restaurant, if there is such a thing. There seemed like there was only one guy working at the time and he wasn't very friendly. To be fair, we went at an odd time (around 3 or 4 pm), but you should still have enough staff on hand to give proper service. To give context, my go-to Mexican restaurants in the Jacksonville area is La Nopalera, so that's really all I have to compare it to that is relevant. Compared to La Nop, this place is 2-stars at best. I got the Chicken Taco Salad and it wasn't nearly as large or filling as La Nop's taco salad. The chips and salsa were the one great thing, but the menu says only the first batch of chips/salsa is complimentary (where as la nop keeps them coming as long as you want). Still looking for a Mexican restaurant in St. Augustine that can compare to La Nopalera.

With pregnant wife wanted Mexican. What am I supposed to do? In St. Augustine, you don't have a lot of choices, but you do have El Potro. The food was actually pretty good here. The service was lacking, just slow. We had to wait over 20 minutes for our server to check back in with us, and getting the check was another long wait.

The standard of Mexican style food, tasted great and the salsa is exceptional. The service is great and you can see at the st Augustine Locals there in force. The atmosphere could be improved but how much should you ask from a real Mexican place.

After a long week in the Old City some rain some good food some not we wanted to go to a causal place plus I was craving Mexican food! I remembered a place that I had driven by many many times ( they have been there for about 15 years) and I had never stopped but, I always saw many cars. If you have a restaurant in the same location that is family owned for that long of time how could you go wrong? This is not a 5 star restaurant ! So if your the type person that the silverware and plates have to cost more than the car you drive DO NOT GO HERE! This is a simple Mexican place no fancy plating no high prices and a good half price happy hour! The food was good and the chips seemed to be freshly fried not left over reheated ones hell the chips and salsa is what makes a Mexican place to me! Salsa not much heat and a little watery ( I like chunky better) but, it had a good flavor . Another one of those laid back places that is very fitting of the Old City.. So I say Good Bye to my Friend St Augustine may we pass this way soon...

This isn't great mexican food, but I used to deal with it because of the reasonably priced buffet they had. It's not horrible food, but most of the time it's bland which should never be the case with any kind of ethnic foods. My mouth should be crying and slapping me because of the awesome flavors it's experiencing. Not the case here. I haven't returned since they got rid of the buffet, because I can't see myself spending entree prices for subpar meals. I can cake a Walmart frozen burrito with hot sauce and jalapeno at home thank you. May return if they bring back the buffet, but until then, I'll save my money for entree's at restaurants with flavor.

In the movie once "Once upon a time in Mexico" Johnny Depp plays a CIA agent with an agenda. He summed it up quite nicely on the following quote: " Elle, you really must try this, because it's quite coki-bia. It is a slow roasted pork, nothing fancy, just happens to be my favorite. And I order it, with a tequila and lime, in every dive I go to in this country. And honestly, that is the best it's ever been, anywhere. In fact it's too good, it is so good that when I'm finished with it, I'll pay my cheque, walk straight into the kitchen, and shoot the cook. Because that's what I do. I restore the balance to this country. That is what I would like from you right now. To help me keep the balance by pulling the trigger." If agent Sands visited El Potro, the chef would be safe...

When frequenting a Mexican restaurant for the first time, I tend to prepare myself for the worst. Most Mexican joints I've been to are mediocre at best, and the experience usually ends in disappointment. Happily, this was not the case with El Potro! Our party of four was seated promptly on a Saturday evening. Tortilla chips and salsa were brought out first... two baskets of chips and two bowls of salsa, which impressed me. ("She's easily impressed," you say. Ah, but I assure you, I am not!) The salsa was almost gazpacho-like; it tasted fresh and bright, and had a nice kick. We ordered the guacamole, and it arrived soon after, freshly prepared. It wasn't particularly noteworthy, but it was certainly enjoyable to us hungry folks. Next came our pitcher of margaritas. For about $16 we each had 2+ glasses of the stuff, a real bargain! They were pretty tasty, too. So far, so good! Combing through the extensive menu, I just wasn't seeing what I wanted. I was really in the mood for chimichangas, but they didn't list a vegetarian version. Deciding to take my chances, I asked the server if it was possible to have a special meat-free chimichanga prepared. It took a bit of dialogue and a consultation with the manager, but they were more than happy to accommodate my request - resulting in a fantastic Spinach & Mushroom Chimichanga platter. There were two good sized chimis on there, each filled with a layer of rice and a flavorful blend of sautéed spinach and mushrooms. Topped off with a red sauce and touch of creamy, mild white cheese, and served alongside a generous helping of refried beans, these chimis were satisfying on many levels. Everyone at the table agreed that they should be added to the menu! The beans were really good, too - thick and savory, very well seasoned - and, the manager assured me, completely lard-free. Other meals at the table included shrimp fajitas, a combo platter with chile rellenos and a bean burrito... and something else I can't remember, unfortunately. But all of these things were thoroughly enjoyed as well. It should be noted that our server was attentive, sweet, and super friendly. She scored extra points by catching a comment we made about it being Mom's birthday... later bringing us a complimentary fried ice cream, complete with song and a birthday candle. Very thoughtful, and a perfect ending to a great meal.

we had dinner last night food was excellent but service was horrible there was only three tables in the restaurant but we still had to wait almost 15 minutes for someone just to come and take our drink order. we ordered our food at the same time, they never came back and checked on us other than bringing the food (which was the cook not the waiter) and the check. We only got our first round of drinks never any refills. This is sad because this is the second time this is happened to us at this place and we wanted to give them a second chance thinking it was just a one time coincidence. it used to be the best place in town for good food. will not return until they change their waiting staff. The only reason I'm giving it to two stars and not just one was the food was excellent.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
