Bland Mexican Fare With Weak Margaritas. Just OK.

Chips and salsa are pretty good. The queso dip is ok... I've had better but then again for this area it may be the best you can get. Very clean restaurant smells delicious and they have awesome music (Latin). Well the food is lacking flavor the flour tortillas are store bought, refried beans are canned refried beans although I asked and they said no but the flavor was just the same. The ambience is nice I was told the margaritas are good here. But all I liked was the chips and salsa.... Rice lacked flavor! I guess coming from Texas this will be the best we can get.... :(

Upon entering you can tell it is a very family friendly environment. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The food was decent. The menu is a little confusing since there were so many items. One funny aspect was the misspelling of the Spanish word for kitchen "cocina" was spelled "cucina" which is Italian.

Not to bad food wasn't bland, our order came out rather fast which is good and bad I suppose. Good so I didn't have to wait bad because was this food pre-made?

Just one word: salty. Our server was very young and didn't know any of the beers they served (my husband had to ask him three different times for a Tecacte, seriously?). The food came out quickly but the beans were salty, the taco meat was greasy and salty and the sauce on my enchilada was salty. The fact that the chicken was pretty bland balanced that out but I don't think it should get points for that. The only reason their getting a two star is that the Swirl Margarita I had was amazing and the chips and salsa were hot and fresh. But I shouldn't be going to a Mexican restaurant just for chips and salsa and a marg that I can get anywhere.

Had a taste for Mexican while in the area and stopped at Pepper's. I stopped in on a Friday evening and sat at the bar. The bartender was nice and attentive and I met a really nice couple also dining at the bar. Everyone, staff and patrons, was in good spirits and seemed to enjoy their time here. I enjoyed the salsa and chips, and guacamole. I also ended up ordering a mango margarita which was yummy.

On the plus side this was the fastest service I have EVER received. ..... On the down side... Wayyyyyy down side. It was the worst tasting food I have ever had... How do you mess up Nachos? I got the nachos grande.. Yes, they were grande but also gross! Also, on the plus side it was Tuesday and my son ate free... Thank goodness it was free.. Because it was straight out of the freezer section :(

The mixed reviews really surprise me! My husband and I have been here numerous times, and have never had a bad experience! Extremely fast service, even when the restaurant is full! All of the staff we've had the pleasure of dealing with are really friendly and nice! My favorite dish is the Los Socios (Two large flour tortillas filled with grilled chicken, Mexican sausage, mushrooms and lettuce, topped with homeade queso sauce and fresh guacamole. Serviced with rice and refried beans.) I could literally eat that every time we visit Pepper's and not get bored. The fajitas are also really amazing, but we've never had anything bad! I can be really picky with rice and refried beans, but I absolutely love Pepper's! As soon as you sit down the waiter comes over to get your drink and appetizer order. By the time you've looked over the menu to get your regular order, the appetizer is ready. It seems that by the time you finish the appetizer your regular order is already out. Very fast, but the quality does not suffer with speed. It's safe to say this is the best Mexican restaurant in the area.

Good Tex-Mex food. I went with my mom and we really enjoyed our food and the prices were great. The waiter was extremely friendly and the service was fast. The restaurant has a classier Mexican theme and the booths are really comfortable. I ordered the vegetable fajitas and I was impressed with how well the veggies were cooked and the variety I was given. The rice was actually flavorful and, unlike many Tex-Mex places, a small side of guacamole is included for free. My mom was thrilled with her chimichanga and said it was one of the best ones she's had recently (she thought the sauce was on the spicy side though). The in-laws were in town recently and they went one day for dinner and also walked away full and satisfied.

Decent Mexican fare but could be better. Great service though! Worth a visit if you are in Shalimar. I had the Seafood Chimichanga and if you like spice then you will enjoy this. It could have used a little more shrimp though.

The food comes out faster then Taco Bell. The service is always great. Before our butt hits the seats there is already chips and salsa on the table. Good prices and the taste is great. My favorite Mexican in town!

This place is really good! Not sure about the mixed reviews on here though. I came during the busy lunch hour and we were seated immediately. The salsa and chips were really great and so was the guacamole. The food came out incredibly fast and our waiter was always checking up on us and refilling our drinks. I had the Los Socios dish from the lunch menu, and I was pretty impressed. The chorizo gave it a nice taste. I finished my entire plate which isn't the case whenever I go to Mexican restaurants since usually the beans or rice is off. And the best part, my meal was under $10. My friend is super picky with food and even she was impressed. I will definitely be coming back.

I am Mexican and this place was the closest you can get to Mexican food around this area, nice staff and atmosphere. Zero complaints, food was great.! :)

  • Jeffrey E.

Sucked. Beef taco was pure grease. Beans tasted like plastic. Rice was just ok. No wonder they serve 2 for 1 margaritas- they are awful. Would not recommend or go back under any circumstances.

Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, amazing service! ! Best Mexican restaurant I've been to in the South East!

Deafening cacophony! My friends wanted to go here for dinner and I absolutely cringed. I tried to accommodate them but wound up leaving because the restaurant is simply so loud you can't even hear your dinner companions. The food is okay, but its simply not worth having to put up with the noise level.

Super super solid Mexican food that was much needed in this area. While all the standard combination dinners are good, the special dinners are excellent and what they really but their effort into. Fajita portions are huge. Regardless of how good the food is, in all of my visits here, I've been consistently impressed by how well run this restaurant is. Service is lightening fast and the wait staff has always been super attentive and are really hustling. I've never been anywhere that refills your drinks and (super hot and delicious) tortilla chips and salsa as quickly as these folks - even when the restaurant is packed. Also, they have tons of high-backed booths that are great for families with small children to keep corralled.

Great Mexican food and wonderful staff! I eat here frequently and would highly recommend the quality of their food. The service wonderful and their buy one get one margaritas are a hit!

Favorite Mexican restraint around. Fast service, food comes quick, 2 for 1 margaritas, food is big portions and pricing is great.

  • Stef S.

Good, regonaly styled mexican food. Not authentic Mexico Mexican, not west coast or Tex-Mex but better than the average local Mexican. Very clean fast and friendly. Great drinks. They do know how to cook spicy and have better than average choices for vegiterians too. They accomidate special requests with a smile. Big groups seem welcome. It does get a little louder so dont expect a quiet dinner. Its not fine dining either but very comfortable and nice. I do hope you check them out because it is a good resturant. Just dont expect it to be just like home or grandmas because its not. Order a margarita for sure oh and the guacamole is really good too!

I feel bad giving it a three, but it's a dang solid three. We needed a place to eat while on vacation and were beginning to miss the Tex-mex from home. Saw this place stopped in. It's the kind of a local texmex place we love and it was tasty on a cold wet day. The service was great and the food came out amazingly fast. I got the mixed nachos and I was very impressed with the chicken meat. Really tasty, nicely shredded. The Fella loved the carnitas tacos he got.

Pretty good food. Sometimes I think they are too heavy with the dry chili powder taste. Good service and always clean.

Great service all the time, every time! Awesome food and drinks with a great atmosphere. I will always have this be my Mexican restaurant in Shalimar. Love this place!!!

1st visit the waiter was very nice. However, the beef fajita didn't have any flavor . I will be visiting this place again to try other menu items. Update 2nd visit I tried going again after our drink order was placed we sat for 20 mins and never had our order taking. But others around us who came after us were served. We just left. Im willing to give this place one more shot after that is a wrap/ complaint & phonecall.

Just another Mexican restaurant. I'm actually surprised to see so many positive reviews! I'm from TX so I'm a little bit of a Mexican food snob, but this place is average at best. Cheese tastes like it came from a can, fajitas are drenched in oil, the flavors are ok, they use krab- not real crab. Gross! Tortillas aren't homemade, the chips are definitely from a bag, and the margaritas are straight from a grocery store mix. If you're looking for good, authentic, fresh Mexican food go elsewhere!

Amazing chicken fajita salad! I went here for lunch and they were super fast and friendly!

Freshly grilled, nicely seasoned veggies with the fajitas. Clean restaurant and facilities.

Good service and great food with a very reasonably priced menu. Steak tacos and shrimp chimichangas were on point! I will definitely be back!

Excellent service, clean restaurant, tasty food. Their margaritas are not anything special but get the job done.

I got the chicken & steal fajitas, kids got tacos and said the shells tasted like peanut butter. Basically, food with no flavor.

I like this place and don't want it to go away, which is why I am giving it an extra star. I feel bad that they made this beautiful restaurant (Eglin Bar and Grill) and within months, it was replaced by Peppers. Not a bad place if you want generous margaritas and plentiful chips and salsa. Living in Shalimar, you won't find many restaurants closeby so this and Cheers bar is it for me. Service is very fast, almost like they have too many people working there, but I am not complaining. They got the food out at lightning speed. My husband had the fajitas, which were sizzling hot, well flavored and enough for 2 people! I had enchiladas which were standard (but at least they made them with corn tortilla...which can't be said for some "Mexican" places in the area.) The chips and salsa are plentiful, and so are the margaritas!

    (4)
  • A. J.

Terrible, I had the "taco salad". It really wasn't a taco salad but actually a large taco shell filled with the typical fare. At $8.00 it was way over priced for what you get. The meat was incredibly over salted and the taco shell tasted like old oil. I ate half and shit canned the remainder. Not that I'm a fan of taco bell, but even they have a better grasp on what a taco salad is. At least Peppers knows better than to give you too much of a bad thing.

I'm giving it a 4.. I've been in town a week and a lot of the food around here is pretty meh.. The salsa is good.. The margaritas are Buy one get one free and the service has been great! Will definitely come back again next time we are here!

By the looks of this place from the outside it looks like a generic run of the mill Mexican place. My husband (Mexican) and I took our chances because it was late and we were hungry. We were pleasantly surprised! The margaritas were good and not all sour mix like some places, the salsa was decent ( I can be a salsa snob since every relative of my husband has a different recipe and we try out e dry Mexican place we can possibly find) but it was doable. The service was very fast and the whole staff appeared to be of Mexican decent and very friendly and appropriately attentive. I had the fish tacos and they were excellent! I would definitely return and encourage others to as well. It's not the best I've had but excellent for this area.

Great mexican restaurant, fast, cheap, and friendly staff. I went there for lunch and we were done in a little more than 30 minutes. Try the Pollo Bandido! My favorite dish!

I have been here multiple times and have been thuroughly impressed each and every time. The service is great the food is amazing and full of flavor. I have read all the other comments in here and people are insane. The chips are always hot and fresh and the salsa is chunky and full of flavor. it's hands down the best Mexican in the whole area. I come from Arizona and believe me, I know authentic Mexican food when I taste it. Their margaritas aren't the greatest but they are good. I do not eat red meat so I have not tried the beef but I have friends who have eaten it and have loved it. Try it for yourself. You'll thank me.

I'm always amazed at how little variety there is in Mexican restaurants in the US. Outside of the southwestern states they seem to be carbon copies of each other. This restaurant is no different...same menu as all the rest. The service was quick, although not particularly friendly, and the food was bland.

Just had Peppers for the first time. I Give it a four because I'm picky and I was impressed for the area. I had the Enchiladas Especial which consisted of four enchiladas one each of beans, cheese, ground beef and chicken. I also had the house margarita, slushed. The beans were my favorite part of the enchilada plate followed by the beef. The chicken was a tad dry and the cheese was ok if you're a cheese fan. I'm not. The margarita was great and not watered down. I usually go for basic drinks to see how good of a bartender a place has. I was impressed. I expected the worst but was happy and will be returning to this place regularly. We sat at the bar because there were people waiting for seating and I'm glad we did. We met nice patrons and the bartenders were great as well. A "regular" at the bar introduced us to the manager and he made sure we were happy. Again, a great place. Soon to be the "Cheers" of FWB. Also the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Try it, you might like it.

Reasonably priced, hot chips, cold salsa (the best combo, and something I learned when working at Don Pablos in college) and fast, friendly service. 2 for 1 margaritas during happy hour (4-6 and 8-10pm) - 16 or 24 oz, frozen or rocks. I ordered the carne asada and it was the ENTIRE skirt steak...it was HUGE! and for $11 on simmering onions and peppers with a full fajita setup. took half of it home - great value and it was delicious! my dad and my brother-in-law both had tastes and vehemently agreed they'd be ordering that next time. The queso is white queso and is just simply the best. I've read the negative reviews and either these people have burned their taste buds off (salsa had plenty of flavor and spice/heat), they want to drown themselves in queso (the bowl served our party of 5 just fine) or they came on an off night/day (we were greeted immediately, the server greeted us promptly as well with chips and salsa and we were wished a great evening on our way out). I'm so glad there is a decent dining option on THIS side of the Shalimar bridge and I can't wait to take my husband there when we are back over Thanksgiving. Go - you won't be dissappointed!

I have eaten here twice when in town on business. To me the mark of a good Mexican restaurant is the chile colorado, the carnitas, and the chile verde. This place does all three really well. The chile colorado is very spicy with a deep flavor though a bit salty. The carnitas and chile verde are well executed also. The chips, salsa, refried beans and rice are pretty routine but the main meal items earn four stars from me. They also have a great tequila collection and very good TV's in the bar.

  • Shannon N.

Wow I was really disappointed in this place. The chips were extremely greasy and the salsa was bland. I had the Steak burrito and I was not impressed I ate about half of one and pushed it away. The meat was pretty dry and tasted kinda off. Defiantly wont be coming back here again. I was hoping this place would be really good seeing how this building seems to change hands a lot oh well back to my fav mexican place.

  • Samantha S.

I greatly enjoyed my fajitas, margarita, and the overall ambiance of Pepper's. The place is beautifully decorated from floor to ceiling and the bright exterior of the building is a refreshing addition to an otherwise drab-looking part of town. The staff wasn't exactly friendly, but they weren't rude either. Service was very prompt and efficient. We were greeted by our server within a minute with deliciously light chips and salsa, had our drinks within three minutes, and our food within 10 minutes of ordering. That place quickly started getting packed with people shortly after we sat down, yet that didn't seem to slow our service down any. I read Pepper's has a live Mariachi band play every Thursday evening. I look forward to going back and enjoying some Mariachi with my Margarita.

The food is prepared well and the portion sizes are huge. The only issues I had is every time I've gone is that the waiter/waitress spoke very little English so there was a bit of trouble with order taking. It's happened twice...my husband said it means its authentic. Lol

  • Kirk V.

I have eaten here 5 times so far. Best Mexican food in the area, but this does not mean that it is as good as places I eat at in New Mexico. So, within this perspective I give it 4 stars since it is the best you can find around here. Have had great service always and prices are very reasonable. Los Rancheros in FWB has better drink prices, so for happy hour you might like that place better. The food at Pepper's is much better though.

  • Mike L.

We had a party of 5 for lunch. Fish tacos and steak burritos were good. Chicken fajitas were fair. Presentation could've been better. Service was sporadic as different waiters brought out the food at different times. Nice atmosphere. Overall ..not bad.

I've got to say that I was impressed! This restaurant has been open for about one week now and appears to be part of a chain (there are several locations throughout Florida). It is located near Eglin Air Force Base, so it obviously is drawing an excellent crowd for lunch, which is when I visited. They have a pretty standard menu, as far as Mexican restaurants go, and also a pretty extensive lunch menu. The highlights of this visit: we were seated promptly, the chips and salsa (both very good) were brought to us immediately, the servers were attentive, we got our food within 10 minutes of ordering (I believe it took even less time, actually), and the prices were completely reasonable! I ordered the Lunch Special #4, which consisted of two steak burritos, rice and beans. I got sour cream instead of the standard guacamole that comes with it. The flavors were all excellent and the food came to us hot and fresh. No other restaurant has been able to survive in this particular building/location for very long, so here's hoping that they will keep up the good thing they've currently got going. If they do, they will definitely enjoy a long life!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
