Oh-my-effing-you-know-who-up-in-the-sky! This is probably the best Mexican restaurant at which I've ever eaten in my entire life! This is the real deal; the authentic stuff straight from Mexico, not suburbanized Tex-Mex (although that stuff has its place, too). Just a half a block south of 17th Street on the east side of U.S. 301 in a very small and VERY non descript strip mall next to the Citgo station, sits Guadalupana. The interior is very stark: fluorescent lights, a long plain sit-down bar and about a dozen like styled tables with chairs. You don't go there for the atmosphere though, you go for the most authentic and delicious Mexican food you'll eat on the east coast of the U.S.A.! Whenever I've walked in here there have been lots of guys in work boots and with tool belts sitting at the counter eating real Mexican grub and drinking cerveza and Mexican sodas. It's a real working persons' resto and the food is hearty and extremely tasty! I'm not saying this as if it's a quaint tourist attraction with some local color - I'm a working guy too and I like my food tasty, hearty and cheap! At Guadalupana, this is how it's served. The two ladies who are usually (wo)manning the cooking part of the kitchen behind the counter and waiting on the tables are friendly, attractive and darned good cooks, too. Sometimes the shaved headed guy whom I believe is the owner cooks and he also does a good job. First time I came here I had the tostones (very light, very crisp) and the Asopao de Camarones, which is a bowl with white rice and a slightly spicy red sauce with lots of cilantro and loads of fresh Gulf shrimp. I'm drooling on the keyboard just writing about it. When I went back I employed the patented "Steve M Taco & a Torta Test" and had a chorizo taco and the Torta de la Milaneza (a country fried skirt steak sandwich with avocado, Oaxacan cheese, lettuce, tomato, black beans, mayo [+ they serve a bunch of sliced pickled Jalapenos on the side] on a grilled Mexican bun) along with a side of fries or tostones. Heaven! That same visit, I saw one of the above stated ladies preparing the bases for the sopes. Looked great! They were definitely next on my list here. (Had some my next visit and they rocked! Two totally filled me up!) Last time I was in there, I went with two coworkers and I again had the torta. My friends had the chicken with onions and the carnitas with onions. These dishes looked terrific, they said they were wonderful, and they came with choice of rice, choice of beans and a small lettuce/tomato salad on the side. They were skeptical at first, but both absolutely loved it! The gratis chips they bring you on arrival are the best I've had anywhere too. They are fresh fried right out of what I believe is the same grease that they cook the pork in and are served along with some pure hot pepper salsa that is "just right" on the heat/flavor scale. The divine "porky" flavor in the chips is something that I've only experienced at home. Their beer selection is a comprehensive panoply of Mexican and Caribbean labels, all served VERY ice cold. If you're looking for the most authentic and best tasting Mexican, Guadalupana is the place for you. If I lived here I would eat here every single day!

The best thing here is the mofongo. I did not realize it until I moved to NYC and tried mofongo at many other restaurants. My mind kept coming back to Guadalupana where it is covered in garlic oil and packed full of crispy pork bits. The location and exterior of the building can be a little intimidating, especially when the metal door slams behind you. Once you are inside that all goes away, because you are greeted by smiling faces and a welcoming feeling. There is table seating, an open kitchen (diner style) behind a counter with seating, and a TV on each end of the room. They play the latest Spanish language music videos. I would have never come here if Steve M. did not recommend it. I recommend walking to the back cooler to check out the beers and the sodas available. The beer runs about $3.00 per bottle, and most of the sodas are $2.00 each (expensive). We ordered a Negro Modelo and a Tamarind flavor Jarritos soda. The basket of chips is free and fresh fried. The flavor and texture of the chips is amazing because they are crispy in some parts and soft in others. Dip lightly in the homemade read chili sauce. The Chicken Empanada ($1.50) was very small, without much filling, and was dry. I recommend going to Café Havana for a plump chicken empanada. However, the highlight of the experience at Guadalupana was the appetizer Morongo ($4.00), which is a Dominican dish of mashed plantains served like a soufflé that is stuffed with crispy pork cracklings, then drizzled with pungent chopped garlic in oil. It is to die for with a little of their homemade hot chili sauce. We created our own version of a taco sampler; 1 beef taco ($1.50), 1 chicken taco ($1.50), and 1 chorizo taco ($1.50). The tacos were very small and the cilantro, onion, and lime we served on the side. All were very dry except for the chorizo, which was then the best tasting. I do not recommend the tacos, because that is not their specialty. After we ordered, and saw the food going to other tables, we realized that the seafood is the commonly ordered item, served with rice and vegetables. However, I was very pleased with my Torta de Milanese ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mi… ) ($6.00) a huge crispy buttery bread stuffed with country fried style steak. Then, topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado, black bean spread, and mayonaise. Served with a large portion of fries and pickled sliced jalapenos. Put some spicy sauce on top.....ahhhh. Skip the tacos, order some seafood, or a sandwich. Don't forget the Mofongo. After eating here, I realized that most of the food here is not Mexican, but Dominican. Next time, I want to get the chorizo and egg sandwich. I did not see any credit card signs anywhere, so I paid in cash assuming that it is cash only from what I saw from other patrons. $21.00 even without tip

I don't get it. Mediocre food. Salsa was bland. Wouldn't go back. I am still looking for a decent Mexican restaurant in Sarasota. I don't think it exists.

OK, I went to this place for lunch today. It is a dive. Small, plain. etc. However, I love dives. It is small as I mentioned, but clean and friendly. I was the only person in the place that was not Mexican or didn't speak Spanish. The soap opera blasting from the TV was in Spanish. I read my book and waited for my food. I'm not as big a fan of the chips as Steve was. I live in San Diego where I have 4 Mexican Restaurants within a 300 foot radius (literally), and about another 8 or 10 in a 1/2 mile radius. That's what happens when you live 40 miles from Mexico. Thus, there are MANY great Mexican restaurants to choose from and several with chips that I like more. However, don't try to find good Cuban or Chinese, but that's another story ! The salsa was ok. It was hot (which I like) but somewhat plain otherwise. I got the "beef soup" first. It was piled with more solid stuff (corn cob, meat with the bone attached, potatoes, etc.) than liquid. It was amazing. I could have eaten 10 times what I was served. Next I had the Asopao de Camarones that Steve raved about. I didn't realize it came in kind of a soup, so the guy probably thought I was a nut for ordering soup first, but whatever. In any case, it was amazing. I can't say enough about the dish -- really really good. They saute the shrimp before putting them in the soup. It would have been nice if they took the unedible tail off first, but it was only a minor irritation. The tostones seemed plain at first, then I put some hot sauce on them and their flavor came out and they came alive. Overall this place is great. I actually thought for a moment about going there for dinner too, but sanity returned. I'll go tomorrow.

A very solid Caribbean style mexican restaurant. From bistec to platanos. Not the Mexi-cali style i grew up on, but still tasty and authentic.

We visited this restaurant since we were looking for some good eats in Sarasota. Steve M.'s review made it sound so good. But I think we had too high of expectations and so we were disappointed some with the food. It definitely is a dive. But it does add some character to the place. The chips are a little thicker than what we would prefer, but pretty good. The tortas that steve M. recommended was great, but needed some jalepenos on it or some hot sauce. just not quite as tasty as we hoped it would be.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
