I have pass by this boonies place and decided an adventure to try this restaurant. It locate at I-4 exit 22 and just north of the exit. When I was there they just opened the door for business. The interior design like a country kitchen. It have the old grandpa chairs at elliptical table. The menu selection mainly seafoods with fish. They call themselves the Catfish Shack but I am changing the norm to try their grouper. I have order the blackened topping. The way they cooked the fish is to provide black pepper and herb over the fish and broil in the oven. It is not open grilled. This is the first time I have eat the blacken fish this way. Because they broil it the fish juice came out and is quite good. My sides are the collars green, corn bread and hush puppies. The corn bread go well with the fish juice. I like the collars green cook in traditional southern style with pork crump. This restaurant is middle of nowhere but it provide exciting meet location for the biker or back country boy. I will try their cat fish next time. In their menu, they also offer the gator meat.

Well I'm not sure why this place has four stars. Styrofoam plates and plastic utensils really turn me off on a place. Typical fried everything. I had the Lite Combo with 5 shrimp, five scallops, and a piece of catfish. Sides of 2 hush puppy's, coleslaw, and baked potato. Potato not warm enough to melt fake butter. If you are looking for good food- look elsewhere.

Every single time we have passed Chancy's my husband would say, "They have the best catfish" After reading the reviews I finally agreed to stop. First, I wouldn't say the décor is atrocious. Yes, there is wood paneling and the table cloths are backed with felt but the name does have "shack" in it so I felt it worked. There are 10 tables, in two rows. One side is on the paneling side and the other sits along plate glass windows. It was bright and quaint. This is not the place to go and have a serious, private conversation. We heard pretty much everything being discussed at other tables. But that was part of it's charm. (Seriously? who cares how many calories are in a cup of hot tea?) One couple was about to leave when the waitress came over and said another customer heard it was their 49th wedding anniversary and paid for their meal. Like I said, everything can be heard here. Our server was Kathy and she was terrific. The sweet tea stayed filled, she was attentive without being irritating and she made sure the group behind us knew that since all 6 were ordering broiled fish it would take a few extra minutes. I laughed when she went to the kitchen and yelled that she needed a Fried Green Tomato....it is very casual here. We ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. We order the fried green tomatoes when we see them on the menu and Chancy's has the absolute best FGT's of any place, ever. The batter was light and the tomatoes were still juicy. They came served in a paper boat lined with the paper sandwiches get wrapped in. There was a side of ranch and I suggest adding the crystal hot sauce to it before dunking a piece of the very large slice of tomato in it. Hubs ordered the catfish with grits and fries. I ordered the grouper with mustard greens and fries. Both meals came with hush puppies. Both meals were served on Styrofoam plates. The fish was fantastic! OK the grits were not heated evenly but once they were stirred it was better. I highly recommend the mustard greens as a side. They were cooked perfectly and cleaned very well...no grit whatsoever. I just wish the grouper had been served in a paper boat with the paper lining. Sitting on Styrofoam the second piece of grouper got soggy. I have thing about soggy. Actually, I hate soggy. I ended up putting the second piece on a couple of napkins to save the crispy coating; it was just delightful. The catfish was coated with cornmeal, as it should be, and therefore didn't get soggy. So if you want some seriously, fresh fish that is fried to perfection? Then add Chancy's Catfish Shack to your list of places that are a must!

I had frog legs and catfish. Lightly breaded and fried to perfection. Cheese grits & greens were my side choices. For my taste, the greens could have been seasoned better. The kids hot dog does not come on a traditional hot dog bun, but they did not mind. The food came out fast, so the kids did not get restless. Good sweet tea. Everything I want from a southern style seafood shack including the friendly staff.

For a small shack on the side of the road, this place can't be beat. We had the fried oysters and fried green tomatoes and they were excellent. Unfortunately they were all out of gator. Their homemade tartar sauce was great as well. Sandwiches were all good and big. I had the mustard greens and loved them. Service was great and they kept my Arnold Palmer filled up.

The catfish is amazing - crispy, light, cooked just right. The tarter sauce was especially good too - I used almost all of the two containers with the half portion. I got the mustard greens, fries, and hush puppies. I liked that the greens weren't salty even with the bits of pork in them as I have a low tolerance for salt. Fries were uneventful - I just wanted them drenched in malt vinegar anyway. The hush puppies were a little heavy - I put a bit of honey on them. It was quiet mid afternoon with only one other table. Not fancy - I picked the table with the pear table cloth and put my feet up on another chair under the table since I'm sore from traveling. I read a postcard on the wall from Jerusalem.

Loved the ambiance. Friendly waitress. Sadly downhill from there. Scallops were soggy greasy. Hush puppies so dry you could poof powder after chewing. Cole slaw was dry and bland. Cheese grits was just canned cheese product added to grits. Not nice. Catfish ok and not greasy. Hub loved the froglegs. French fries very soggy. We went there in 2006 but a lot has changed.

Went there for some fried seafood and got the sampler platter, the Mariner i think. The scallops were great, the catfish better. The fried oysters were just ok, but the shrimp were so overcooked they were like rubber. Fries were greasy, greens were good, if a little boring. Will definitely go back for another chance.

Chancy's Catfish Cabin was a fun yelp find. Only one exit over from where I stay when in Plant City, and less than a mile north of the highway, and I've never seen it. How sad! Small, casual place - only 10 four top tables - plus a separate entrance for take out. Very friendly staff. Easy to find from the road, even with the current construction. I chose the half dozen oysters for $5 as my appetizer. Interesting presentation of a sytrofoam bowl of saltines and a bland horseradish sauce, and a paper tray, lined with paper, with about 8 oysters out of the shell sitting inside. I've never had oysters not served in the shell, so I was thrown for a second. But I took a big sniff of the raw oysters, smelled absolutely nothing, and dug in. Cocktail sauce is on the table, along with sport peppers in vinegar, ketchup, s+p, plus Malt Vinegar. Good oysters, but not great. Next up was the small sampler of 5 shrimp, 5 scallops and a piece of catfish, all fried of course, with your choice of two sides (tons of options but I went with a salad with Ranch, and a huge basket of fried pickle chips), and your choice of cornbread or two hushpuppies (I went pups since I'd had cornbread the night before at Snellgrove's). Everything about my entree was delicious. Juicy seafood, crispy seasoned breading, not too greasy. I didn't even want the scallops really, and those turned out to be my favorite. $11 I didn't think the portions were huge, other than the pickle chips. The shrimp would be considered medium size, the scallops were small-ish bays. But the food was good. Good enough that I'll be back for sure.

Cute cafe. Paper plates and plastic utensils but the food and service is great. Fried seafood is crispy with no traces of grease. I'm picky about hush puppies and I loved theirs! Asked for wine and it was served in a frosted mug! Think I will start this practice at home. In short loved the food,a service and atmosphere!

If you want a taste of the 'real' Florida before Disney World and gated retirement communities stop in at Chancy's. Country, nothing fancy, nice people, mostly locals and good fried fish. At night the entrance to the parking lot looks a bit questionable but don't let that stop you from trying it. I had the cat fish fried and it was very well prepared. I saw a lot of reviews praising the mustard greens so I gave them a try. I must have lived up north for too long now because I was not that impressed. Overall, worth a stop and you will leave with most of your money in your pocket.

From the absolutely atrocious interior design to the waitress who calls you 'Honey' when you walk in, this place is absolutely wonderful. It's exactly what you expect from a roadside place in Plant City, Florida. I always tell my kids, when going into a place like Chancy's stick with the specialty. The specialty there is fried fish. Stick with it. It's absolutely perfect. It's freshly battered and fried and perfectly crispy and moist when it comes out. The ribs were a big disappointment here, though. They still had the silver skin on the back (a rookie mistake at best) and had a gamy smell to them that let me know they weren't as fresh as they could be. If you want fried fish, though, go there.

OK so I'm not doing so well with my resolution to lose weight by hitting all the southern restaurants in the Hillsborough county area, but I have the rest of the year to keep exercising, right? Chancey's fries EVERYTHING, and when I say everything, I mean it. If it's on their menu it's probably fried. I got grouper, yellow rice with some hush puppies and fried Okra. The portions are amazing, way to much food for one person, and the price is unbeatable. the batter is light golden brown, with the perfect consistency, and crunchiness. The fried grouper was pretty amazing, some of the best I have had in the Tampa area. The atmosphere is pretty on point for Southern ambiance, it's just a little shack off the side of the road, and the seating area is not too large. I went around 7:30 and met my party, and there were a few other tables but I was taken care of immediately. If you're looking for southern and for fried in the same sentence, try this place.
