ESSEX Seafood is located on SR40 just 26 mi. west of I-95. The food is so good and reasonable that I would walk the 26 miles for a meal. Fresh northern seafood like clams, steamers, Maine Lobster served as you like it . Their breading is light, delicate and tasty. if you're smart, start with an order of their onion rings. AMAZING! I had lunch of fried shrimp with fries for $6.99 and was stuffed. GO! TRY IT! YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLACE!

I have been looking for whole belly comes like they have in Connecticut for my wife for years. This place was recommended and it did NOT disappoint. WOW I would have never thought that this small place out in nowhere would make you feel like you flew to the Connecticut shore. They fry everything but you can also get some items grill or bake. The Mac and cheese side was nice. Applesauce was clearly a store bought lunch cup you get for your kids. Baked potato was OK. I think I will try the French fries or onion rings next time. It may be a drive for us but we will be back! Cash only - my wife and I each had the platters and the bill was under $40. My salmon platter had two nice pieces of salmon and two sides. The whole belly clams was enough for two. They are closed on Tuesday starting March 2015.

We have been regularly stopping in at least 5 times a year since 2008. Clams with whole bellies were ok not as good as NH and MA. But my last two visits, the clams were burned and over cooked. Also, I hardly saw any Bellies in my clams. They must've had some turnover help in the kitchen, a cook who doesn't know how to fry Clams. I won't be coming back anytime soon. If they don't get their act together soon, they will loose more customers...

The best fish sandwich in this area. I highly recommend it. Low key place, elbows on the table kind of place. Awesome batter on onion rings. Must try if you're in the area. Must try.

The Essex on route 40. I'd like to say we got a great meal there but I can't. We went as a party of eight. And eight of us agree that we wouldn't come back the food was at best mediocre the service was a bit better but the flies the constantly bothered us while we ate was unacceptable. Individually all eight of us agreed that they had a subpar meal and would not frequent the Essex again. Not much more to say other then I give it two thumbs down. Oh by the way did I say they had more than their share of flies in the restaurant.

As a transplanted New Englander my family and I couldn't wait to try Essex....the dining room is small... The wait staff pleasant enough.... When we ordered the large order of 2 lbs of steamers we should have known we were not going to be getting a truly New England style meal. There were18 clams on the platter....making the clams one dollar a piece.... They were not good... We had to ask for lemon... I ordered the grilled seafood platter...I got 3 small shrimp....5 scallops...a piece of cod about the size of a tennis ball and a small platter of fried clams... Everything was undersized and over priced... The chowder was a milk based white... Not the typical red chowder served in the summer in NE. They don't have clam cakes or broiled options.... VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!

We stopped on Memorial Day. Tried a couple other places first, but they were closed on Mondays. I don't eat seafood and don't care for chicken so ordered a hamburger. It was excellent. My husband's shrimp looked good, and he said it was.

In a dirt parking lot - in a land far far away...sits The Essex. We actually stumbled on this gem one day while we were JetSkiing the St. John's and asked a "native". He said, "ask for the whole-belly clams." Now, some of you are thinking about those strips of rubber hidden beneath a crust of breading poured from some frozen cardboard box. EhEh, this my friends, is a FRESH SHUCKED clam and breaded in "cracker" meal and dropped in FRESH oil. That's not the end to this tale...I ordered a "basket" size order with their FRESH MADE onion rings and got a coleslaw side. Had to be nearly 1/2# of clams that were buttery, flavorful and divine. The onion rings rocked (same cracker meal coating). You know there has to be icing on the cake to this story...one of the servers makes a homemade Boston Creme Pie that sings and little song as it dances around your mouth;O) True, The Essex lacks the panache' of more "worldly" digs...Somehow, I overlooked those awful racing pictures ;o) and savored the Old Florida sparkle of how do do things right! Out for a drive? Hit it.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm on a quest for the WORLD'S GREATEST MACARONI AND CHEESE Essex Seafood is not in the running. For they serve -- wait for it -- Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Not even the good stuff (Deluxe), but the stuff that during 80's commercials was advertised as "The Cheesiest," so cheesy in fact that it should be re-dubbed "Cheese and Macaroni." Okay, so besides making fun of their mac and cheese how did they fare? Not bad, honestly. The buffalo catfish was a surprising delight, but the grouper (I had baked my brother had fried), was so-so. The shrimp was a solid affair and I would probably order that if I make a return visit. Overall, the service was just kinda "meh" and the restaurant was cramped and loud, filled with memorabilia for racing (a sport which I detest). However, if you're in this out of the way neighborhood and have a hankerin' for buffalo catfish, it's worth the stop. Oh, and they only take cash. Boo.

My husband and I ate at Essex on 5/25/15- Memorial Day. We thought we would treat ourselves to a lobster dinner...WARNING...STAY AWAY FROM THE LOBSTER.. This is what happened...we were talking to the waitress about the 2 different types of lobsters they have one being more expensive than the other. I was going to have my lobster fried (never had it that way before) and my husband was going to have it steamed. The price on the black board was a little confusing and I explained to her that we had never been there before to please break it down for us. So we were told that we could get the 2 lobsters called twins for $35.99. My husband questioned the waitress a second time about the order being $35.99 and she responded yes...we would get the 2 lobsters for that price. Both of our lobsters had very chewy parts mine more than my husbands. So I really left quite a bit on my plate. When the bill came we were shocked it was $81.00. I believe that she intentionally slipped the more expensive lobsters into the order. This has got to be how they scam people. They are located off of one of the main roads to Daytona and I am sure they rely on tourist business. They do not take credit cards only cash and this is probably the reason why, you cant dispute it. I called the owner of the restaurant and she informed me that the waitress had been working for her over 19 years and that she did not understand the confusion, but she was very sorry. She did not offer any refund to me. Being a business woman I would have immediately asked for my name and address and sent a check out for $35.99. We will never ever eat at this restaurant again. The service was poor, no atmosphere to speak of but that is not the reason. The reason is I believe that they are trying to scam people.

If you love Boston's Seafood in Orlando then you have to try Essex Seafood Too. Great fried clams with a New England seafood shack atmosphere. A pleasant one hour drive from the Orlando area.

At first look the decor and tables are old and outdated .but the freshness of the food makes up for it the whole clam bellies were terrific the fresh homemade onion rings are also great!! We will be making this a regular stop on the way back from the lake.
