This place is fantastic! The decor is beautiful and it's in a great building and location. The beef brisket and pulled chicken was fresh and moist and the bread pudding was delicious!!!

Our family vacations in Pensacola and we really like the Happy Pig - we are repeat customers. Now let me say that if you are a barbecue aficionado you may look down at this place but don't. It is a decent barbecue meal that couldn't compete in Memphis but is still really good. The kids love it and we always have a good meal. I give it 4 stars because this restaurant will not satisfy barbecue snobs but for those who are not snooty, you will like the Happy Pig

A while back I heard that there was a BBQ/Wine Bar somewhere downtown Pensacola, but I never saw one. The other day while on a walk, my guy and I stumbled upon "The Happy Pig Cafe" and boy oh boy... we couldn't have stumbled upon a grander establishment! This place is AWESOME! Definitely our new favorite place in Pensacola! Pros: - GREAT location (just a block north of Hub Stacy's & Dharma Blue) - The decor is new and fresh - There's indoor and outdoor seating (a wonderful fenced-in patio area) - Very pet friendly - VERY reasonable (if not cheap) prices - AMAZINGLY friendly staff (we felt like part of the family when we left) - The food was flippin' divine! I don't even like BBQ and I LOVED my meal! My man is a BBQ fanatic and he said it was the best he'd ever had! Cons: I can't think of one. I highly recommend this restaurant for any day/night of the week. I foresee many afternoons and nights spent here with friends this summer! ROCK ON HAPPY PIG!

The Happy Pig Cafe is downtown Pensacola finest BBQ joint... and the only! :-) I had a great lunch at "the Pig". I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich, which was served with a side, an iced tea, and settled the score for around $10. They have a great location, and the food was delicious! I would definitely recommend the Pig to anyone who enjoys BBQ.

Brunswick stew here is excellent and packed with flavor! The chopped pork was okay and the brisket was okay but a bit fatty. Atmosphere is more upscale and relaxing. We went for lunch on a Saturday and for wine and swine night with tapas. The tapas were good and the wine was okay but we weren't told by the waitress what the wine was or the tapas. Still have no idea what the red or white wine even was....

Great atmosphere and drink specials but really more suited for a bar than a BBQ place.

  • Cole Y.

Great place for local barbecue, and its in a very cool section downtown. All kinds of traditional types of barbecue plus some different things specific to the location. Definitely try the Nachos. The sauce is also made at the restaurant.

Food great, the wait staff lackadaisical. Nice wine selection too. Occassionally they have a smoked hamburger. If they do when you go, get it..It is off the chain....

  • Reid S.

This place is not all that. Great location and nice atmosphere. They can smoke meat but I think they get there sauce from the supermarket. It has no flavor. The service: we waited for a few minutes then was told we could seat ourselves. Sat for ten minutes without anyone noticing us then walked out. We will not be back.

Finally found this small Bar and BBQ. Good prime rib on Friday night. Very good Brunswick stew (Add a little BBQ sauce). BBQ cooked on the grill wings huge and good. Good bar atmosphere and good service. Good pulled pork however stay away from their version of mustard sauce. Tradition is to mix the white BBQ sauce and the red. Good drinks and televisions at the bar. Guitar music from time to time.

I went in not too long ago with a friend of mine. We were looking for a good bbq place in Pensacola that wasn't a chain. The building itself isn't that easy to find. When we walked in we were quickly greeted but not seated. We just stood at the door for a few minutes before someone told us we could sit where ever we wanted. We had been seated for awhile before anyone came to take our drink orders. I believe our waitresses name was Honey. She seemed to be quite rushed even though the restaurant was pretty slow. The food was the only saving grace. It took awhile to come out but it was really good. I had the pork enchilada and my friend had a brisket sandwich. Unfortunately Honey's attitude knocked my rating down to 2 stars. She was rude, reeked of cigarettes, and dressed very inappropriately. Glad I didn't have the kids! Might be willing to give another chance if she isn't there!

Just found my new favorite BBQ place! Only to find out its closing soon :( I had the brisket sandwich for lunch and I was so full I didn't eat dinner tonight. Oh, and did I mention the Bloody Mary's are delish?!? Made with homemade pickled green beans they are soooo tasty! Very bummed to hear of their financial troubles, and wish the owner the best in the future.

This restaurant is now out of business. They had a sign placed on their door Wednesday thanking customers for their support.

Amanda is right. As of 7/24 the Happy Pig is no more. The BBQ and service may have been hit or miss, but the beans and the Alabama white sauce never disappointed.

Came in for lunch, place was empty and it smelled weird. I don't know what it was. Anyway ordered a pork sandwhich and fries. The sandwich was pretty good but very greasy. Staff was incredibly nice.

Always good. My wife and I had the pulled pork sandwich. There are three different sauces. The bbq spicy, bbq sweet, and the white sauce.

So, I'm behind the curve on this one, but here I am. Stopped by impromptu twice before, was intimidated by the crowd...not the size so much, but the general sense that things were not moving quickly. So I looked for a slow time and easy parking space, and it happened on a Tuesday at 7p. Slow, night, sparse crowd, which means I should get priority so be aware that I may describe a best-case scenario. I sat at the bar, and Dawn, whose name badge proudly announces her as "Queen Pig" promptly took my drink order, within within two minutes. Order taken in another 5 minutes. I kept it simple, ordering a couple of sandwiches, chicken and brisket, and a couple of sides. And then I waited. It wasn't interminable, but seemed a bit long at 22 minutes. My check was over $30 with beverage and 15% tip. of course, whether it was worth it depends on what he food quality, right? I shared with a friend for another perspective. What I thought: The brisket was dry and stringy...the chicken possibly a chopped up chicken breast...Cole slaw and baked from five gallon buckets. No bbq sauce was offered or included, so we did improvise with some items from the condiment rack.... What my friend said: "Gurrrrfren, your white ads did not pay $30 fo dis shit an calls it BBQ? No way no hows." But she ate it anyway and I dropped her off at Emerald City just in time for her show.

We lucked out. 6:20pm on a Saturday evening and the place was mostly empty so we got great service. We are from KY and love Western KY BBQ which is also a dry BBQ where you add a thin sauce for dipping, so this suited us perfectly. Sides, especially Brunswick stew were great! Overall definitely a favorite place for when we are in Pensacola!

Went to Happy Pig on a Sunday afternoon. The patio was packed and we ended up waiting for a table b/c we brought our dog. The inside, however, was completely empty. We ordered the pulled pork and ribs. sides of coleslaw, baked beans, and mac and cheese. The meat was cooked dry so it requires sauce. The sides were fresh and did not seem to be out of a can or box. The sauces are thin but had decent flavor. The service was nice but we were brought the wrong beer when we reordered. Not a deal ender but the attention to detail was lacking. The atmosphere is nice. Its of a street that is not in heart of downtown so there is less to watch while you eat but it is quite and relaxing. The menu offers a wide range of options to choose from so I would go back and try something else to give them a second chance. Try it for yourself and see!

I ate here yesterday evening. The appearance inside was nice. I sat down and ordered a combo plate of brisket and pulled pork with mac and cheese; beans for sides. The pulled pork was decent and the sauce was ok but i was really ticked off when i tried the brisket just by probing with my fork i could tell this brisket was probably 2 days old. There was no tenderness but instead dry and brittle. What disgrace. I tried to stomach it by i couldn't, i think i left 2 of 3 slices on the plate. The mac and cheese was basically microwaved instant and the beans was nothing but canned baked beans with pulled pork sprinkled in it. Anyway i don't want to sound disgusting but i used the bathroom more then once last night and it wasn't pleasant. Maybe they need Gordan Ramsey to stop by!

Excellent BBQ, generous portions. Nice variety of sauces: Alabama white, South Carolina yellow, a vinegar-based sauce, and a spicy tomato based sauce were available. Broccoli salad was very good. Bread pudding to die for! I had the pulled pork and it was delicious. Co-workers with me had brisket, pork sandwich, and pork wrap. Everyone proclaimed the food excellent and that we all have a new gave BBQ place in P'cola.

This place makes me cuckoo for cocoa puffs (covered in BBQ sauce of course). I'm so glad that a quality, but casual barbeque place has come to downtown Pensacola. I feel with all the new businesses that have sprung up that The Happy Pig will become a lasting, delicious fixture. Wait staff is courteous, and the food is "slap ya mama" good. Every table has a large variety of specialty BBQ sauces to accommodate Texan and Deep Southern palates alike. I would highly recommend their Brunswick stew which was so good I nearly threw my spoon on the ground and began to shovel it into my gullet with my bare hands. I didn't, but it crossed my mind. Friday evenings are especially good here for wine lovers since bottles are 25% off. They have a great selection (unlike the red, white, and pink at déclassé places like Sonny's), and the prices are an absolute bargain. This place really earns its name. I left happier than a pig in s**t!

  • Stephanie S.

Overpriced and bland for the most part. Pulled pork too dry, brisket had too much fat - not proportionate to the serving size, cole slaw pretty much tasteless, toast had nothing on it, sweet version of the sauce had way too much pepper and burned the inside of my mouth...on the upside the one star is for the waitress who was very peculiar.

    (1)
  • Michael M.

Came from CT, partly for the ribs. Got half rack, meat was badly undercooked, outer surface stringy as shoe leather. Brisket not special. Cole slaw was limp. Except for the food, everything else was pleasant.

We stopped in after we had been out and about, with the intention of just drinking some wine to whittle away time before we were hungry enough to have some sushi. First impression on the approach: Neat place! Several tables were full of people outside and one guy had his chocolate Lab with him. The Happy Pig provides cold water and treats for the puppies, self-serve, right beside the front door. I know a lot of people that are always on the lookout for pet friendly places to hang out...this is one such place. Upon entering the building, you'll smell a wonderful, smoky aroma that will be difficult to resist. We saw some people eating and the portions served and made a pact to return and chow down on some dead animals. Looking at the menu while we had some wine, I couldn't help but order a side of mac-n-cheese, which, I promise, was outrageously delicious. Creamy and cheesy and with a hint of...something. The veggie of the day was collard greens, and the bartender swore that the baked beans were incredible. I'm not sure when they offer this deal, but we chose a $20 bottle of Malbec and got 25% off of the listed price on the wine list. The wine list is pretty extensive for a BBQ joint, I'd say. The 25% off brings bottles into the retail price range, or, at least, a hell of a lot closer than most places in the downtown area that offer bottles of wine. We got 4-6 glasses (depending on how chintzy the pour is) of very good wine for $15...you aren't going to beat that unless you drink at home. Well, yeah, you could beat that if somebody else was buying, but let's disregard that scenario. I kept waiting and wishing for somebody to order the Pork-in-Nator sammitch. Served on a full muffaletta bun, it is piled with pulled pork, snausage, bacon, cheddar cheese, and cole slaw. It's $17.99, but I bet that it would easily feed 3-4 people that didn't have a colony of full-grown tapeworms in their gut. I'm looking forward to my next visit. If you are at World of Beer on Palafox, the Happy Pig will deliver...something to keep in mind.

Brunswick stew was absolutely incredible! Fun atmosphere and great employees! We were welcomed like old friends! Nice happy hour though the Pinot noir could have been a bit cooler.

this place is right around the corner and had excellent drink specials and beer when we arrived labor day weekend. Enjoyed bbq nachos and the ribs to go made our home BBQ easy!! Waitress was very friendly; great little spot with nice bar and outdoor seating. Will be back!

Stopped in last month while we were strolling through downtown Pensacola before the tour at the Brewery. Tasty BBQ pork and chicken, very quick and friendly service.

The food and service was great and reasonably priced. The only complaint I have is how cramped the space was inside.

This was my second visit here while on vacation. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich on TX Toast and it was a great sandwich and it filled me up. I enjoyed the BBQ sauce as well, bought some to bring back home - Alabama White and the Red tomato based sauce. A bit pricey, wish they would just bottle the stuff instead of selling it in styrofoam containers. Great food, great service. Definitely will return when in town!

This was a good find. Went to the area to find Bishop Coffee and Tea and it was closed. We saw this, and gave it a shot. My daughter (3) and husband loved the smoked wings. They were a bargain, really. I got deviled eggs and they were outstanding. The slaw that came with them was also delicious. The Brunswick stew, however was not appetizing. It was too sweet and almost too meaty (and the meat had a weird texture?). I guess I am just used to a different style of Brunswick stew. Service was okay, the waitress seemed overwhelmed with her three tables that she was waiting on. Maybe it was just an off night for her. Whatever the case, we will definitely be back. Outside seating was also nice. Perfect evening.

Brisket sandwich was soo DRY. Pulled chicken was ok. Waitress did not wait on someone quick enough so the manager chewed her out, right there in front of us. With all the BBQ places in this town, probably will not go back.

There's nothing worse then a humorless bartender, and today I'm apparently so blessed with him. He live it up pal show some enthusiasm. None he's in a perpetual coma! I'll have the Brisket and Rib platter, sadly the happy bartender advised me there out of ribs. (sigh) its 12:00pm and no ribs. Not a good start, you would think that ribs is a main staple in a BBQ joint. Ok, time to start anew! My friends got the pulled pork sandwich, his wife got the brisket wrap, and now I got the brisket and smoked turkey. We all split a brunswick stew and a turkey gumbo. Starting with the gumbo first, it was excellent, smokey pieces of turkey, very flavorful. The brunswick Stew was good not great. The brisket wrap was huge and very tasty. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent. I had the brisket and smoked turkey, (remember NO RIBS!) Excellent excellent excellent. The brisket is out of the world, and the turkey was close to follow. Some of the cons about this place. There seemed to be confusion in the kitchen. Staff doesn't react well,The BBQ' sauces were very good, but you go find them. (not amply avalible) Truely they did not seemed prepared to open. The food is five star easily, but the staff is not. I sure wanted ribs!

    (4)
  • Sarah K.

Not my favorite. Definitely not a "get your hands dirty and eat the crap out of some pigs or chickens" BBQ. My ribs were small and little dry to my taste. Server was slow and a ditz. Here is how my conversation went with her: (After the ribs arrived) me- "Can I have some BBQ sauce?" her- "Sure." stands there... me- "what kinds do you have?" her (in her infinitely vast base of customer service and logic) "we have 4" I eventually got it out of her to bring to the table all four so we could try them. They are not your typical BBQ sauces, but unique and worth a try. They are the same spices (or so it seems) with a different base of mayo, mustard, vinegar, or tomato. My friend has the Tapas which was a good deal for the amount you got but not the traditional "tapas" you would see served as actual Tapas in, say, an Hispanic establishment. However, the CHICKEN CAKES (like crab cakes) with remoulade sauce were fantastic. Bottom line: Don't go here for BBQ and don't travel for it. It has some good food but if you're expecting pit BBQ...wrong place.

NOT SO HAPPY PIGGIES! on a road trip and had a hankering for some great bbq. too bad we ended up at the happy pig. luckily the waitress was nice and the place pleasant and clean. but the food...forget about it! brisket and ribs were so dried out....must have been sitting around for some time....and we were there at 11:30 am one of the first patrons. we had incrdible indigestion all the way back to ft. lauderdale!

  • Ryan F.

Very high prices for what you get. The barbeque is not that great though. There's nothing to make it special or any different from the chain restaurants. I expected better and really wanted to support this local business, but I will not be back.

I came here in search of good BBQ because every other joint in Pensacola had left me horribly disappointed. I order the combo plate of pulled pork and brisket with beans and a broccoli salad on the recommendation of the waitress. Everyone raves about the brisket, but I'm not sure why. Its more fat than meat, but if that's you thing so be it. The beans were decent, the broccoli salad was surprisingly good. As for the pulled pork mixed reviews here because it was fantastic that night, but a bit lackluster the next time I went here. The BBQ sauces are interesting, but they really need a good KC style sauce for those of us who like a thick smokey flavor. Despite the three star rating, its probably the best BBQ in town. Just not the best I've ever had.

Normally, this place is good. However tonight some friends and myself (party of 8) came here around 7:30pm to have dinner. The service was slow (I only saw 1 server working the floor). When our food finally came, it was either cold or lukewarm. We ate it and got the hell out of there. In addition there was a lightbulb in the middle of the room that kept flickering throughout the night. The owner came around only to move some tables around for some customers, but no one ever checked on our experience while here. Overall, this was a disappointing dinner and I'm not sure that anyone in our party will be back again. I give them 2 starts because at least the cold food was tasty.

Good brisket,Mac and cheese nothing special, pulled pork burrito very good.

  • Chris H.

Wow, I am NOT a HAPPY PIG! Went here for the first time on a Sunday and the wife and I were not impressed. The first sign that this was going to be a disappointment was the fact that you don't smell BBQ cooking when you walk in the door. While they give you a hearty portion and I was very full when I left, the meat was tasteless and the macaroni and cheese tasted like Kraft Easy Mac. I do have to give them props for their white BBQ sauce and Baked Beans though. The Baked Beans were some of the best I've ever had, but still didn't make up for the rest of the meal. Sorry Happy Pig Cafe, we won't be coming back. My $25 would've been better-spent at pretty much any other BBQ joint in town. Oh, and there were only 2 other tables of guests at noon, and the service was bad. Okay, I'll stop beating a dead horse.....or should I say pig. Cheers!

We went for wine and swine on Wed night and fell in love. upscale BBQ place. the appetizer plate and 2 1/2 pours of wine was $9.99 and would have been my meal had I know the portions. Chef's choice each week and no BBQ flavor on the platter. Two cold and two hot: chicken sausage skewer, stuffed baby bell pepper, seared pork belly and a steak pasta dish were all spot on. We shared app and then each ordered a dinner. Way too much food, took it home. Best part was the smoked turkey, fab! Whole chicken good, ribs OK. Sides were good. Portions are generous.

Had lunch. The food was very good and reasonable. The smoked tuna salad appetizer was excellent.

I had been planning to try this place out but they catered a lunch at my job today. From the reviews I was expecting some great BBQ. What I got was mediocre at best. The pulled pork was more shredded than pulled. The sauce, what little there was, tasted like bad manwich sauce with tabasco added. The coleslaw was ok, but certainly nothing to brag about. The baked beans were pork and beans with a little onion and pepper added. At least now I know the reviews greatly over rate this place.

Like this place alot. No BBQ is not what i get in Texas but still very good. I like the assortment of sauces. Bartender was very curtious and attentive. Would definitly go back when in Pensacola.

Simply amazing. If you blink, you might miss it. It's nestled into a little corner and looks tiny, but it's actually a larger establishment. They even have fresh water and dog treats outside! The menu is priced exceptionally reasonable. We were shocked! We both tried the 2 entree meal with sweet tea, and we split the Brunswick Stew. Immediately after trying the stew we were in love and knew one cup wouldn't be enough. Our food was so fresh you could taste the smoke still settled on the meat. Everything was perfect. Wait staff was busy, but they happily brought us pitchers of sweet tea and water to keep us tied over. Our whole meal was $25! We also asked about their advertised Wednesday night Wine Tasting. Surprisingly they are not as busy as they would like to be, which comes as a shock seeing the quality of the food and wine selection. It's 6-9 on Wednesdays and includes 2 tastes, and 4 tapas. $10 per person. Not a bad deal eh? *** After trying the tasting, we are hooked! We both had tastings, plus a meal, stew, a glass of wine and then a bottle of wine. Less that $50! They had the lights dimmed, and amazing sax player, and the owner was making rounds chatting with all the customers.**** Highly recommend checking it out, you won't be disappointed!

So much bbq! Came here on a Sunday at 6 and we were the only ones eating. Got the pulled pork dinner, which consisted of a giant mound of pulled pork. The bbq sauce on the table was good. Came with two sides that were also top notch.
