Probably my favorite sushi spot in town, and not just because its convenient to all the downtown spots. They have more creative rolls than other joints (ahem, dharma blues) and their volcano roll is seriously the BEST volcano roll I've ever had. Spicy shrimp appetizer is also very good. Consistently good sushi, consistently good service, and unlike other reviewers I really don't find this place pricier than other places in town. I get that people might wonder why a restaurant is not busy, but please. I'll take a good, empty restaurant over a bogus, packed restaurant any day.

A friend and I went to Sumo Sushi for the first time on a Saturday night around 6:30 after reading the reviews and wanting to try out a new sushi place in town. The restaurant was a little smaller than expected even after reading about it's size and consisted of about 6 tables and a five or six seater sushi bar. There was also a two seated table outside that could probably be used. The night that we went there was only a sushi chef and an assisting chef/ server. The service was extremely slow and there were only two other small parties besides us. Someone came in to order a to-go and seemed to be waiting from just after the time we got there till after the time we left. We assumed that the service wasn't usually that slow and tried not to let it get in the way of our experience. I ordered the Volcano Roll ($10) and a small seaweed salad ($5). The Volcano Roll was small and to the point, but It was probably the best tasting volcano roll I have ever had. The seaweed salad was nothing special even for the price and it's size. It was nothing compared to my usual sushi place, but I like how close it is to downtown and will be giving Sumo Sushi another try in the near future based on the good reviews of others.

Not the best sushi I've had in my life, but it's downtown so very easy to reach for a quick lunch if you work in the area. The prices are a bit higher then the average though. I recommend the "Alaskian roll". Really good!

I suggest that all customers try the Seafood Salad. She will make it mild or spicy....as spicy as you want. This is the BEST tasting dish I have ever had, anywhere. My wife and I get an itch for this salad on a regular basis. Don't take my word for it...just try it. She makes a LARGE version for me. I could eat twice as much.

Their seafood salad was probably their best dish. Everything is small portioned and overpriced!

Best sushi in Pensacola! A small place that is never too busy and has great service! Can't get better than that.

I've been here 3 times, yet to have a complaint other than the only server in there knows about as much about sushi as my grandmother. I had no idea what a cone handroll was... Neither did she.

The sushi was okay. Alittle exspensive in comparison to other sushi places that I do like.

Great sushi best in pensacola. This is a very small resteraunt and family owned. The lunch specials are great and at 10 bucks for sushi rolls miso soup cucumber salad and tea it's a bit ridiculous to read reviews that it's overpriced. Second I have never had bad service there and have gone for years. I like some others question the authenticity of the reviews here and no I am not an owner nor related. My favorite as with all good sushi places is the sashimi special.

I should preface this with the fact that I'm a sushi snob, so it's hard to please me in the sushi department. I lived in Japan for 6 years, so I hold sushi chefs and restaurants to very high standards. First off, the location. It's kind of difficult to actually get to the restaurant itself, because if you are coming in from the wrong direction, you will have to make a U-Turn to get into the right driveway to enter their parking lot. Kind of a hassle if you don't know where you're going the first time you go. Secondly, when I walked in the door the restaurant had no other customers, the owner and her daughter (I think that's who they were) were the only ones there. I took that as a bad sign - a good restaurant shouldn't be empty at peak lunchtime hours. Third, walking into the restaurant I got hit in the face with the distinct odor of fish, with a slight undertone of grease. Always a bad sign in a sushi joint... Fourth, the food was sub-par. I ordered a Volcano Roll and Karaage (fried chicken) - the sushi was mushy, fishy-smelling, and seemed a little off. I only ate 2 pieces because I was scared of getting food poisoning. The fried chicken was only slightly better, but only because the sushi was so terrible. It was over-fried, and greasy. Fifth, the food took a long time to come despite the fact that I was the only person in the restaurant at the time, and my food wasn't anything too labor-intensive to make. Sixth, I only got one Diet Coke the entire time I was there, despite having finished mine about 15 minutes into being there - no refills were offered and the waitress never looked up from her magazine to come and ask if I needed a refill or see if everything was OK. Even after I was done, she didn't seem to notice that all I had eaten of my food was my white rice and the rest sat there virtually untouched. She didn't ask any questions, she just dropped the bill off. There are much better options for sushi in Pensacola, and I will stick with those from now on. I hope you will too!

Pretty awful place. Only a few ingredients for all the sushi. Most of the customers when I was there had apparently ordered fried items as the entire restaurant was full of grease in the air. They were using what appeared to be a home fryer with no hood/fan to evacuate smoke and other cooking byproducts. The only cook/sushi person was doing the frying right at the sushi bar. After about 15 min., I was well coated and went home to take a shower.

Just saw this message that Steve L (probably from the restaurant, or restaurant owner?) sent me privately 5 months back: "You must have been drunk already when you went in. Everything you said concerning the food is untrue...and you KNOW it." Unfortunately, I don't drink...and what I shared was my opinion of the restaurant.

I should have went to my "FAV" restaurant Dharma Blue that is right down the street because this place was god awful. I ordered a water and a Volcano Roll, tasted like mush. I have a black belt in finishing everything on my plate and I could only eat 3 pieces.

Only gripe that I have when dining here is that the food takes wayyy too long to come to you. I believe that the lady that works there is the only person making the food but that shouldn't be the excuse to make the customer wait almost an hour.

We tried Sumo Sushi again a couple of weeks ago, and I'm pleased to report that I enjoyed it MORE this time around! The sushi was fresher that I experienced last time, and the shrimp tasted much better.
