OMG!! The pizza was mouth watering good. Even better that night! We saw the reviews and decided to check itout, but we had low expectations in mind in case it was over rated. IT WAS NOT. We sat outside in the patio and ate around 2pm so we missed the lunch crowd. We had meatballs as an appetizer and ordered a pizza and a chicken parm to share. Everything we ordered was great! The pizza was fresh and not greasy at all. Even heating up the next day there was hardly any grease which is surprising since I am always mopping up the grease from other places. Someone wrote that they did not like this place and that it was not Pizza Hut. Well, I agree. You can get a Pizza Hut pizza anywhere, but you will find it very hard to get a pizza this good at Bonelli's. The crust was seasoned, but not overpowering. We also tried the tiramisu and an italian ice. The tiramisu was ok. Nothing special. The Ice was very smooth and was a great way to cleanse our pallets after our meal. Will be going there again really soon in the near future. In fact, since writing this it has made me want it so I think I will go there tommorow after my Dr's appt as a treat!

Just a quick review update - failed to mention one CRITICAL thing in my first review - Bonelli's has a potato soup that will absolutely make your head spin!!! The first time we went, we had ordered a cup of the potato soup. I loved it, shared it my wife, and never got it back. The second time we visited, we upgraded that to a bowl, and split the lasagna again! So I insist that you try the potato soup the next time you visit. I'm also ticked to share some exciting news directly from Dominic Bonelli himself: "I just wanted to take an opportunity to clarify some of your concerns. We understand that you feel the lasagna may be on the higher end but it is because of the quality ingredients we use. We use only 100% angus beef in all of our meat dishes. Our food is always homemade and we make every attempt to use the freshest ingredients available. We do apologize for the higher price but we hope you understand we would like to serve our diners with the best quality food. Because many of the local chains serve vendor bought menu items, we really wanted to go for true quality." He goes on to say... "...my Father is currently playing around with a steak dish that will hopefully find its way onto the menu soon." Lastly... "In regards to some of the other traditional dishes you were seeking, the ziti, eggplant parm, etc. are normally our daily specials so please feel free to call ahead of time to see what we will be serving that day. Finally, we are definitely working on getting the manicotti and chicken parm on the menu, once we get everything down to a groove!" I'm beside myself to hear that they are working out the addition of a chicken parmesan dish because that is my all-time favorite Italian dish ever. So I'll end with this - if you HAVE NOT tried Bonelli's Cafe Italia, please HURRY over there to try it! It is a wonderful experience, and the entire family will literally treat you like a part of their family. And I would like to mention that I'm upping my rating to four stars to make sure I do justice to the superb experience we had BOTH times we went. See you soon Dominic! ~ Charles

Nothing special here. Actually it wasn't that great and was kind of overpriced. The meatballs were gross. They had olives in them. An unwelcome suprise. The salad was tasteless. And the pizza was really doughy with too much cheese and garlic. How this place has 4 stars I will never know.

Amazing food! Awesome service! Small and quaint, romantic, and lively all in one! We will be back every time we are in Pensacola!

This place was wonderful. Awesome food, awesome waitstaff. Everybody was super nice. Portion sizes were huge! I don't review places much but this place is so great I wanted to make sure people know it. I will recommend it to everyone I know.

This is the last meal of my 5-day gulf excursion. I love seafood but I can probably only have so much of it and tonight I wanted something starchy so Italian works perfect. The service was great and food was comforting. We ordered meatballs as an appetizer, caprese salad and baked ravioli in vodka sauce. Everything was delicious! The sauces are very flavorful (a little bit heavy but it's Italian food after all) but not too salty. It's a little bit on the expensive side but we had plenty to take home/back to our hotel.

Great place! A real hole in the wall, but if you're looking for good Pizza, this is the place. We had a thin crust pie with meatball and sausage, phenomenal. The potato appetizer with mozzarella was great, too. Tasty bread as well. All in all, a fantastic find!

I really, REALLY want a sandwich at Bonelli's, but I've only been there for dinner, and since I know that the pasta is so delicious, I refuse to pass up an opportunity to get some. That's what happened last night. But, as I was eating the other half of my angel hair pasta and marinara with Italian snausage for lunch today, I had a revelation: why not get a pasta dish to go, and eat a sandwich while I'm there? Yay! I are a geenyus! :p Seriously, I wanted to tell y'all that when your server tells you what the specials are for that day/evening, it would behoove you to pay close attention. They do run out of some items, but there are also items that are not on the menu, and those will be revealed to you at this time. For example, last night the server mentioned that they had a non-vegetarian marinara that was simmered with pork chops for 3 days. WTH?! I'd eat a hay bale if it had bacon in it, and I'm pretty fond of pork chops, too. Clearly, this was my selection! The verdict? OMG. Even though I adulterated my marinara with Italian snausage, I could tell the difference in the sauce. It had depth of flavors that you just don't get from "regular" marinara. They also had the vodka sauce last night, which is absolutely incredible, but I wanted to try something new. As usual, I was not disappointed. My friend got the shrimp scampi and her dish had a LOT of good-sized shrimp. It wasn't cheap--I think hers was $23 or so--but it looked delicious and she said that it was good. Just wanted to emphasize the off-menu items in this update, but then I veered off on a tangent. Beg pardon...I get talkative like that sometimes. ;)

My husband and I drove around Pensacola last night trying to find a place to eat - we attempted to go to three different restaurants, and each had a 40 minute wait. At the last minute, I remembered someone had mentioned Bonelli's, so we decided to give it a shot. When we showed up, the outdoor area was cute and had a ton of fresh flowers, which I felt was such a friendly welcome. We came in and were seated immediately. The waiter was absolutely wonderful, and the atmosphere was so clean and cozy - I can tell they really pay attention to the small details which seems to be lacking in most restaurants these days. We got a bottle of wine and tried the Italian mushrooms which were absolutely delicious. I ordered the baked rigatoni (the special of the night) and my husband had the chicken parmesan. They were both outstanding. We tried the Italian creme cake for dessert and it was PERFECT. Seriously delicious, my husband was tempted to buy a second one. I loved how attentive and caring the staff were as well. You can tell they truly care and take pride in their food, such a rare trait. I rarely leave reviews - but I couldn't pass this one up. We can't wait to go back again!

We had a delicious feast at Bonelli's. Although it is hard to find since their sign is small but that is just due to the regulation red tape! I love that it is family owned with homemade goodness. I'll start with the homemade house dressing. Absolutely delicious with a nice blend of herbs. It wasn't the typical oil and vinegar "mixture" you usually get at an Italian restaurant. Next was the pizza. It was so tasty, light, and crisp. The crust was cooked perfectly too. I also had the pasta with red sauce and meatballs. The pasta sauce was a nice light marinara type of sauce with a treat of olives hidden in it. They weren't kidding when they said the meatballs are big and they had a nice spice to them! The bread they serve with the meals is so light and fresh it is like a fluffy cloud in the middle. We topped off our meal, although there was little room, with the fresh lemon dessert. The custard was smooth and creamy and it just made the dessert like a little taste of heaven! Definitely our choice of places to go when we are in the area. Wish we lived closer, we would spend our weekly family dinner night's there!

I have been wanting to try this place out for awhile, and finally had the opportunity on Saturday night after going to the fair. We were a little late coming in, and the place only had a few people finishing up their meals. The wife ordered the Shrimp Scampi and I order the Baked Ziti. Both were very good, and we both had quite a bit left over. Normally we have to drive to Fort Walton to get good Italian, so this was a great find for us. The place is small, only about 8 tables inside and probably 12 tables outside. I can see where on a busy night, especially if you can't or don't want to eat outside, you may have a wait. It is a family ran business, which we like. I am not much on the big chain places. We will definitely be back.

We discovered this great treasure when another local restaurant had too long of a wait... Well so glad it did! Bonelli's was awesome! The comfortable atmosphere, family-like staff, and Italian style comfort food satisfied beyond expectations. We had chicken Marsala and baked ravioli, then tiramisu for dessert. Yum!

Reduced rating; was 4 star, now 3, due to increase in prices. This place was our favorite place to go for a quiet dinner. We usually got a small pizza or split up some appetizers with a bottle of Valkenburg Dornfelder. Honestly, I don't think we've given their entrées a fair chance at all, since we always just get pizza (very good pizza, but probably not the best in town). We hadn't been in almost 6 months and, much to our surprise, the prices had all gone up past the already "more-than-I-want-to-pay" to, "I just can't see paying this much for what we're getting". I think that here, you pay for the "coziness" and family-owned-operated feeling you get when you eat here. Unfortunately, there are just too many other places that offer more for less. (But we'll still come back here for our wine)

Nice friendly service. A $17 piece of lasagna was good but pricey. The second batch of bread was good. Discouraged that nothing was served with the lasagna.

3 times in a week! Everything on the menu is delicious. You can substitute Vodka sauce on your pasta. Do it. It's well worth it! Staff is like family. Eating here is like they invited you over to their house for dinner. This place is a italian owned. The patriarch is from Rome! It's a small restaurant so it's a good idea to get a reservation. So far, I've had the baked rigatoni with vodka sauce and the lasagna. I really want to try the pizza, but tonight I went in and the patriarch of this establishment wasn't feeling well so there was no pizza. Apparently he's The guy to make it or it's not made right so they don't try to make it without him. That's a good thing! The complimentary bread and oil is delicious. It's all made in the restaurant and it tastes like it. Delicious! To top it all off they serve spumoni. If you don't know, this dessert is like Italian ice cream, and it's shipped in from NYC so it's authentic!

I had the special baked ravioli of the day with bacon and spinach. It was absolutely fantastic. Jiah was constantly offering suggestions for us that we're always spot on and honest. It's expensive, but basically everything on the menu is homemade and delicious. It's a family owned restaurant and every person I met was nothing but welcoming and enjoyable.

Bo might know alot of things, but I know food. This place is off the charts good. Thank you Bonelli!

  • Jacob L.

Expensive and gross. I got the baked ravioli and the only vegetarian sauce was what they call marinara. That sauce was about 50% butter and had no remnant of tomato. The ravioli was supposed to be a cheese blend but was just flavorless ricotta. My wife got spaghetti, but was also bland. Total cost = $32! Drinks not included. Smh.

If you are in Pensacola , you have to go to Bonnelli's !! It is a family owned restaurant - seemingly the whole family is involved and everyone is WONDERFUL!! The specialty of the house is baked ravioli-try it!! It is terrific ! The wait staff, the food and everything about Bonnelli's is wonderful. Can't say enough about the enjoyable experience

Wow..!!! Awesome food..!!! I have to admit that I thought I might have made a bad decision to eat here when I drove up because from the outside the place doesn't look like much, but as soon as I walked in the door I knew that there was something interesting about this restaurant. It took a minute to figure out the menu because it seems to focus more on the sandwiches, but once I figured out that they have some pasta dishes all was good. I had the Manicotti and WOW was it great. Not "really good", but GREAT. A buddy of mine had the lasagna and he said it was awesome too. Anther in our party had one of the sandwiches and he said it was great as well. And, they even carry Moscata Di Asti which is a sweet desert wine that is difficult to find in most restaurants. The service was really friendly and the fella that cooked our meal came over to the table once we were done to see if we liked the meal. All in all, one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Bonelli's is a hidden gem, and a place that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys great food (and doesn't read a book by it's cover).

Yum...no wait...double YUM! There were six of us that dined here on a Tuesday night. The place was pretty empty. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is great! The red sauce is a little spicey and thick, just like sauce is supposed to be. Pasta was al dente. No mushy noodles here! The meatballs were delicious. Several people in our party had dishes with Italian sausage and agreed it was very good. We had a melange of desserts. The Italian cream is citrusy and light. It's like a cross between a custard an bread pudding consistency. Very refreshing. The cheesecake and semi-fredo were divine as well. The limoncello was a little sweet for my taste. Bonelli's makes theirs to pour over pound cake so I think it's better served in this respect than for sipping purposes. The bread that the entrees were served with is my only criticism. It was rather unremarkable compared to the rest of the meal.

Andrew says "sweet jesus it's good". This is not a fancy restaurant, but who cares, the food is incredible. We ordered the meatballs for an appetizer (hand rolled we were told) served with garlic bread. Amazing. The garlic bread crust was not, well, crusty. When we commented to the waitress, she said, "Well, the bread is fresh." Whoa, that's awesome. We split the lasagna (the special that day) and it was the perfect size for us. This was the most non greasy Italian food we've ever had. So simple and good. We had dessert too. The waitress recommended something with lemon and chocolate chips, and it was like nothing we've ever had before, very light. It was great to leave an Italian restaurant feeling completely satisfied and not weighed down by the food. It's a really great family-run restaurant with great food at great prices. It may even make us want to come back to Florida again.

The experience started with asking for a water with lemon. They dont have fresh lemons. They gave us lemon packets. We ordered the meatballs, a greek salad, and pizza. The meatballs were not good, sauce was very bland. The perhaps the weirdest thing is that there were black olives in the meatballs. That salad was ok. The pizza was doughy in the center and had too much cheese on it. And i love cheese, still too much. The waitress asked us once how everything was. We will not be back. And the bill came to about $40.

I have been here about 5 times now and have enjoyed it each time. Initmate family place with great service. I had the fruit and cheese appetizer. Also they have an appetizer with bread and 3 sauces so you can tell which sauce to get with your entree later. Watch out if you order sandwiches 6 and up you need a fork and a knife. I had penne with red sauce and grilled chicken. It had a nice surprise. (a little spicy heat). They also have outside dining if you want the fresh air.

Good food, good people, fair prices and amazing desserts (try the chocolate cake!)!! The menu has a great selection - from salads to sandwiches to pastas and they are all good...if you're looking for good homemade Italian food - this is the place! They also have some awesome wines to choose from. Don't forget to say hello to their cat that greats you out front as you arrive.

This is pretty solid Italian - certainly the best I've dug up in Pensacola so far. I liked the small, family-owned ambience. The basic penne with red sauce was good, but not unique. Meat balls fell in to the same category. Haven't had the sandwiches, but they looked good. With places like this, I wonder why people go to Carrabas.

Up until now my favorite Italian has always been Emils in Lansing, mi. Bonellis is now a close 1a. I had the neopolitan appetizer and meatball grinder. Both were epic. I also tried the lemon jello they brew and it was delicious and potent. I will be eating here again before I leave town.

I might have to go back and try something else since this place had such great reviews. I went with a friend from out of town and thought it was average. The salad was small, the bread was not homemade and the food was just ok, small portions. Personally I did not care for the made in China decor or the outside eating area.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Very quaint and clean, family friendly, great food and service. Skip the chains and try this place. The owners take great pride in delivering both wonderful food and service. The meatballs were excellent. The lasagna and baked ziti were terrific. Loved the vodka sauce.

  • Cory K.

Nice waitstaff, however the food and beverage were woefully inadequate. I asked for ginger ale and got a mixture of coke and sprite. Like I wouldn't know the difference. My Caesar salad was so loaded with dressing I couldn't eat it. Lastly , my saucy shrimp was more like someone poured a bottle of olive oil into it. Yick. My husbands meatballs and marinara was mediocre at best. Plus, it was overpriced. A meal at Carabbas would have been much more satisfying. I've actually had a better meal at Pizza Hut. Nice ambiance and sweet music. One visit was enough.

  • Jasmine C.

Great food and the service was wonderful. Had ordered the manicotti and tiramisu and they were the best. The Moscato wine was just like I had in Italy. It's a small restaurant, but I think that's what made it better. Sometimes when you go to little mama and papas restaurants you find better food. Also, their prices were very good too. Will be going back soon.

Cozy restaurant with good outdoor seating. Great service friendly staff owners are very engaged in their restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. If we lived local we would be here all the time. Quite possibly the best dining experience we've had during our two weeks in Pensacola. This will be a definite stop on any return trip. Strongly recommend Gina's sauce over angel hair!! :)

We arrived back from a family trip and tried Bonelli's -- based on fellow-Yelper recommendations -- on Tuesday evening (day before yesterday). It was very tasty and it seemed strange that there was only one other non-family-member in the place at 6 pm, but then a singing telegram guy arrived wearing a tux with a balloon bouquet and started singing opera -- Sal's birthday! OK, that was pretty great: dinner *and* a floor show! Happy Birthday, Sal, your cooking makes the world a nicer place!

  • Yaniv B.

I ended up paying a little over $40 for 2 people which included a caesar salad, caprese salad, pizza and lasagna which were all mediocre and below. I didn't feel like the ingredients were fresh, and I've had better frozen dinners. I'm not too surprised the parking lot was empty when we got there. I went based on everyone else's reviews, but I think this place was overrated.

Fantastic food and amazing service! Tired of beach food we went in search of something different and we were glad we went out of the way to find this gem. Seating is very limited inside, but luckily they have a pleasant out door area that is covered that we could hang out in until a table was ready. This out door seating also accomidates a band on Friday nights that the owner get out and sing in after the kitchen shuts down. Food was fantastic! Try the vodka sauce and get a side of the potatoe croquets. The bread is house made and very good. The kids all got the children's noodles one with Alfredo and side of meatball, one with butter garlic and meatball and the last with marinara and sausage. My youngest thought the sausage was too spicy, and the kids were not used to the seasoning in the meatball but I thought they were tasty. My husband polished off his ravioli special, it was so cheesy! Service was awesome, the owners son served us and was so acomidating to us and the kids. The cook came from the back and chatted us up, what a friendly enviroment. We really enjoyed ourselves tonight.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
