This is one of my favorite places. I don't much care for Mexican food except for here. I think it's mostly because of their salsa and homemade chips. ADDICTING!!! Their fish tacos and shredded chicken quesadillas are my regular go-to's.

Gotta Love Alvarez. Awesome, friendly service. Their Salsa always tastes fresh. We order the Spinach and Cheese Quesadilla for dinner, it's excellent. Definitely try some Polvorones for dessert. I highly recommend Alvarez for Mexican food near Bradenton (Palmetto).

We stopped here for lunch on a whim from airport to Bradenton home. What a good find! Food was fresh, sauces were authentic, and helpings were adequate. The only complaint is the high cost of the non-alcoholic drinks-- $2.50 for unsweetened iced tea. Staff was friendly but not as attentive as we might have liked.but we will go back.

Saturday night about 5:45. Enjoyed the patio seating and festive music. Our server was sweet, but could not answer questions about the menu, and she was painfully slow. Service altogether was crazy crazy slow. One couple actually left after waiting for quite a while without service. Weird cuz there were only about 5 of the 20 or so tables seated. Anyway, I got the shredded chicken quesadilla and it was awesome; hubby got the beef enchiladas with sour cream and jack cheese sauce, and he hated it. Oh yeah, and we both loved the salsa!

Stopped in for lunch today. Great home style Mexican food at a good price. We sat on the covered patio and enjoyed the nice weather, my daughter had a burrito, my wife the chicken flautas, and I had a combo with burrito, enchilada and a taco. The mole sauce was great. Service was not rushed, but server was attentive. I will go back if in the area.

Went there for lunch. Limited customers and table and booth were dirty. Ordered the guacamole for appetizer, didn't look or taste homemade. Sangria was nothing I'd order again. I ordered the fajita chicken tacos, was very bland, chicken tasted like it came frozen, and pre-cooked/cut. Did however have fresh tomatoes and onions on it. Was confused however when the server apologized for the wait because they had to make the fajitas (which consisted of fried onions and bland chicken) My husband had nachos, which were fried tortillas, refried beans, same type of chicken, canned or from a jar jalapeños (not that terrible) pre packaged lettuce with cabbage in it, tomatoes and to top it off, some sprinkled Parmesan cheese. I grew up eating authentic Mexican, and although the food was edible, there was nothing authentic about the items we ordered.

tried it twice. Not so good either time. I wanted to like it. It just isn't particularly good. and the brown sauce ugh! what is that? Don't put that on food.

My husband & I have been to this restaurant half a dozen times....good food!! My husband is Hispanic & he even says this is the closest to "Mom's" food that he's tried since we moved to Florida almost 3 years ago. Nice staff and good food!

Very authentic Mexican restaurant. Very nice inside. The food was great and it had a great atmosphere. The prices seem reasonable. We went at. 10:30 am. I am not a breakfast person so I had a steak dinner / lunch. It was pretty cheap but had lots of food. Small steak with some sort of sauce, beans, rice and lettuce and tomato. It was very tasty. The other two people had breakfast. They both had scramble eggs that was mixed with cheese, potatoes, and I think jalapeño peppers. I tried it. It was good. That came with beans and fries. I would eat here again and recommend it.

This is has been a favorite of mine whenever we pass through town. Next time, we will pass this place. We visited on a night they had tacos for 99 cents. Sounds like a good deal, if you can get a server to come to your table. Me and a co-worker waited for several minutes before somebody came and took our order. When the cheap tacos arrived, they were thin and almost meatless. After chowing down on the cracker-like tacos, I wanted more, as the wafer tacos didn't staunch my hunger. Good luck getting some service. Finally, a second plate of the thin-crispies arrived, it was time to pay. Alas, they didn't make that easy either. Waited and waited and waited. My advise? Stay far far away frmo Alvarez Mexican Restaurant. The place has gone down hill....big time.

I am glad I didn't read the reviews before we went here... we liked it A LOT! I had driven by this place a million time and it seems like it is always busy and now I know why. It's good. It is nothing fancy - the ambiance is rather 70's and a tad old and worn. Our server was nice and very helpful when we asked about menu items and the food was good. The food is more home-style Mexican - not flashy or and the Chicken Mole was FANTASTIC!

We use to love this place....portions are too small and every time we order take out they always forget something or get part of the order wrong.

The best Mexican food I've found in the Bradenton/Sarasota area. They have $5 lunch specials which serves more than enough food for lunch. Everything was homemade and the service was decent. It's a low key place and family friendly.

Alvarez has roaches crawling around! Service is bad. This place needs a major cleaning. If you're in a hurry this is not the place to go.

I have been a patron here for over 15 years, although not frequently enough for folks there to know me. Over that time I've had great meals and pretty ordinary ones. That very same thing could be said about meals in my own home - and I am the cook! That said, I live in Pinellas county and in my opinion, we lack good Mexican restaurants. The fact that most of the patrons here at Alvarez are Latinos says it all. The place has been thoroughly painted, the rest rooms are clean, the servers are courteous and back each other up, and they make Gringos feel welcome. They have good specials, $1 import drafts and decent portions. Their salsa rocks although it is more watery than I'd like. Nearly everyone I have taken there or recommended it to has agreed. We find it worth the drive across the Skyway. Note to Terry R, no disrespect but to say "filthy" and in "disrepair"-exaggerated and unfair! Do you honestly think Carmelita's is better? This place was built in the 50s and they have done a good job bring it up to date. It's authentic and certainly not for Taco Bell tourists!

This place always seems to be packed, but I don't get it. The food aint great. The place across the street serves much better food, and has even more reasonable prices.

Wish I'd read these reviews before eating there...the food was barely better than Taco Bell, the ambiance was one of a pawn shop, service was surly. The night we were there the server told us they were 'out of vegetables'. Really!? Out of vegetables? At a restaurant?? Avoid , avoid; there are many other places to get a good meal, skip this one.

Food was inexpensive, good, and plentiful. It was nice to go out on a Saturday night and not be rushed to finish so the restaurant could turn the table. Our server Miko was attentive and friendly. No complaints from me or my 3 dinner companions.

Road trips from my job had me discover this place by accident. Over past months, I had a few work lunches here with a friend. We did not encounter anything horrific, like some of the other reviews, but understand completely! To summarize: a very tepid "Tex-Mex" menu, with nothing to rejoice over - bland salsa, wimpy refried beans, etc... My Mom made me better, simple, "Tex-Mex" fare when I was a kid in the 70's! With me being familiar with ancho and tomatillos now, I can even make better and more authentic Mex food at home! So a bit disappointing? My Mom and I are 100% non-Latino, and we both regularly cook great Tex-Mex and also real, worthy Mexican fare that make this place see like a sit-down Taco Bell to us? Is this joint geared for the tourist only? Also... Those really shady, rent-by-the-hour or whatever flop-houses behind your restaurant our very scary! I would NEVER come here after dark! Not much more to say then: Lo Siento Mucho y Buena Suerte!

I have lived in Palmetto for a couple decades so I am familiar with the Mexican restaurants in the area. I have tried this place a few times as everyone can have an off night, but always had poor results. Food is bland and uninteresting. Rice is dry. Meat overcooked. Service is not great. I believe the only reason that it is open after all this time is due to snowbirds because I know locals avoid it. The biggest reason not to go? Roaches. I went with a friend and we saw a roach crawling up the wall. I am writing this review again as the "yelp community" IE owners pressured yelp to take the negative reviews off and mine was one of them. We will see how long this one stays.

When i left Texas, the thing i missed most was goid tex-mex. This place is as good as the best places in Texas! The young people that work here are terric, friendly, and fast. It was all pleasantly cleaan and, for some reason, there is a fiberglass Italian Robin Williams by the door.

Authentic and delicious. Never been disappointed in over 10 years! Love the food and the service. The sangria is good, too.

Everything was great and towards the end of are dinner I noticed something fall from the ceiling! As I look down there was a live cock roach on my wife plate! That ended are dinner and we will never go back!

I went to Alvarez to for lunch with 3 friends. We all ordered the same thing based on a coworkers recommendation: Delicious chicken tortilla soup. The bowl is HUGE. I will definitely be back! Our server was nice and friendly. Next time I might order just a cup for a lighter lunch. The place is not fancy but it is clean. Bathrooms are clean but tiny.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
