Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This place is great for Mexican food. Loved the salsa, the queso, the food tasted fresh and yummy. Had the chimichangas and it was deep fried goodness

I've been in other parts of the Nation and I've eaten great Mexican food: From L.A. to South Florida. This place, however, was a disapointment. I tried the Fajita Mix. First, the vegetables were cut in big chunks, and the meat was cheap. Real fajitas require 'flank stake', which is the right combination of meat and fat. Other meats, such as loin, are good for tacos but not for fajitas. I understand that I'm very picky when it comes to food, but I know that there are better places out there...

I was introduced to El Potro when I came to visit a friend of mine prior to moving to Florida. I'd heard from someone else that finding a good Mexican restaurant in the Orlando area was proving to be a difficult task, and my previous experience at a Mexican restaurant in Orlando was extremely disappointing. El Potro was a pleasant surprise. The service was good, the food was on par with a lot of the Mexican food I was accustom to eating. All in all it was a good experience and I've gone back twice since then.

Very good quality food. Authentic flavors, good price.

Absolutely wonderful, and lots if foods prices are amazing with the most expensive plate being $14.99 to which I had El Potro Sizzling Fajitas made of chicken, carnitas, shrimps Bell peppers and onions. I have have found my favorite Mexican restaurant and close to home.

Great Mexican food with great prices! Love this place, definitely best Mexican in Oviedo area.

When it comes to Mexican food you need 2 things - authentic and delicious..this place has both of those. My dad and I came here for lunch randomly and we were so pleasantly surprised. I had a lunch special for 5$ and it came with a taco , chili rellenos, beans, and a guacamole salad. Everything was amazing! Best thing was the chili rellenos it was the best one I've ever had on my life. Sauce was insanely good..guacamole and salsa was homemade and so so good. If you live around here you definitely have to come to this place. Cheap, delicious, authentic!

This place is your average Mexican joint. Nothing special but not bad. They have the usual combos, fajitas, salads, nachos, etc. I hear they have a good buffet for lunch but I've only been for dinner. The place was about half full on a Friday night. The service was pretty good. The price is about average. My only gripe is about their chips. I believe they use flour tortillas and fry them. They taste odd and are thicker than normal corn chips. They're also slightly chewy and I'm not sure if this is because they're flour or if it's because they're thick. Also, they're salsa and queso are pretty spicy. I like spicy salsa but just be cautious if you're a mild salsa person.

We like this place a lot. It's a nice place, especially when they have their buffet going. Good for groups so everyone can get what they want. Some nights they have live music (a mariachi band) which is fun. Is it a completely authentic Mexican place? No. But if you want good food at a reasonable price on a week night when you don't have the time to cook and want a hot meal, it's a good place. The service is good; we have had nothing but good wait staff there. We also like it because the shopping center has a Publix in it; we combine dinner with running in to get a few things before heading home (which is only 1 mile away) so it's really convenient for us.

Very basic ordered meal, tacos and enchiladas, chili relleno as a first time customer. Eaten mexican food from Ca, Az, Texas, New Mexico. Food I ate here at El Porto lacked fresh ingredient flavors. More or less like a TV dinner appeal. Maybe Floridians are OK and accept this kind of flavor.. Hopefully I'm wrong. But I can sure say it's a place where the show "restaurants impossible" on food network might lend a helping hand create a vibrant exciting food menu. Service was good and cortius, drinks were good as was the margarita

Great lunch buffet special! Came during the work-week and wanted to take a nap, I loaded up on tacos, taco salad, tamales, and more. Definitely tasty and a great lunch treat.

I think that anybody who has ever eaten here will agree that the overall allure of El Potro is the buffet. How many Mexican places do you know of offer that? I don't know of any personally. I'm not a buffet person but this one I like because it has good salad and veggie options, the guacamole and green salsa are definite winners. Is it Authentic? I personally don't think so. When you walk into a legit Mexican place you see an Aguas frescas station (which they don't have here) Another item which is a true Mexican staple is Nopal or Cactus and again; you don't see that on the menu here so no, it's not Authentic but you know what? It's still good and I'll probably be back again.

Went with 2 friends to catch up one of them suggested it. The menu was so big it was hard to figure out what we wanted to eat. Great 2 for 1 margarita, the food was amazing, so much I had leftovers. I got the carne asada, amazing. We indulged and hit the churos for desert! I hear Tuesday they have $1 tacos so I will be back! We were the last ones there but they didn't rush us or anything.
(5)Amy V.
My boyfriend and I love this place. The service is great, servers are friendly, and food arrives fast. Large portions and low prices. Our go to meal is to split the beef nachos. Margaritas are terrific, I prefer mine on the rocks. The churros are to die for! Absolutely delicious and I'm not really a sweets person. If you are hungry - the El Potro special can feed a family. You've been warned!

I still feel a little full from yesterday's lunch. It was Father's Day which meant it was time to try something new. I was in the mood for Mexican and came across this place on Yelp. A couple firsts for me yesterday. First time at this restaurant AND first time EVER experiencing a Mexican food buffet. I was both impressed and skeptical at the same time. For a Mexican buffet at only $10, it was amazing! Everything tasted very fresh and had a lot of flavor. I couldn't believe it. The cons that I would have is that they never seemed to restock the items on the buffet (at least while I was there), the flan on the buffet was lackluster (too firm for my liking), service was quite slow as it took awhile for us to get seated or even greeted (they were busy in their defense). I know those seem like big cons, but the food outweighed everything else for me. I will be back. I have to. Where else am I going to find a Mexican buffet? "That's gold Jerry!"
(5)Jalim A.
Never disappointed ! Fresh, authentic food. Friendly staff and awesome prices. Not to mention the best lunch buffet in orlando.
(5)David N.
The combination plates are awesome. They're just a bit bland. For dessert, I had the Banana Chimichanga, and it was amazing! It was crispy but begins to melt in your mouth. The service could use a bit of work, since I had to end up seating myself and get my own menu. On Fridays, one of the employees there would do legit magic tricks for the guests, which is phenomenal! Aside from the nitty gritty flaws, this place is definitely worth checking out. I will definitely return!

This is one of Orlando's better Mexican restaurants. Now let me tell you something about my wife: she's VERY particular about food she eats. Eating out isn't exactly her idea of fun. This is one of two restaurants that she gets excited about going to. The food is fresh and hot, and they aren't afraid to actually use seasoning. If you go early enough they also have some breakfast items. They aren't the largest buffet, but I'll take quality over quantity.

Been to this place a few times First time we ordered fajitas which were pretty good I have to admit the onions and peppers can mask the lack of seasoning on any cut of meat which lead me to believe that the food was pretty good the re-fried beans with the cheese are delicious undeniably. The chips and salsa are generally good not a shocker I would not choose the salsa at this restaurant over chilis salsa and avocado appetizers. Our second visit was less impressive we ordered chicken wings which were cooked in oil that tasted like burnt food so the chicken wings tasted burnt they were for our 5 year old child who refused to eat it we left the plate with all the wings on them which the server saw and asked if we needed a box for which we responded no! They didn't offer to remove the order from our bill so we paid for a plate of burned tasting chicken wings. I ordered the steak again in the form of a taco without any peppers and onions like the fajita like in my previous visit. The meat was dry and under seasoned over all I was very disappointed in the meal. The horchata is good but it is not good enough to make a return visit for beans and hortchata.

Tried El Potro with a couple of friends today for the lunch buffet. What a good decision! First off, the Sprite was delicious. Crisp and refreshing, not at all losing its flavor--which is a legitimate issue that can kill a place for me. The buffet was a considerable size with such variety. Everything I tried I enjoyed. Plus, the desserts were fab! For about $10 for the buffet and a drink, it was definitely the right choice.

My favorite place to eat in Oviedo. Authentic food. Great prices. Great service and staff. I dine here at least once a week. I recommend the enchiladas.
(5)Peter C.
They have free wifi and all you can eat pineapple. I was expecting a lot more like mexican midgets boxing but there was just a bunch of fat people here eating. Maybe they ate the midgets?
(3)Elsie K.
I came here with about 12 other people from work for lunch today. They were quick to rearrange the tables to accommodate all of us and promptly took our drink orders. The service is impeccable here, which is why I'm giving them 5 stars. The food is good, hot, and cheap (which is awesome for a broke college student). Yay, buffet!
(5)Jennifer W.
Best Mexican in Orlando. Great food, awesome salsa with perfect amount of cilantro and amazing margaritas with Patron (same price as regular) and a strong pour from owner
(5)Ralph P.
Talked my wife into going here and she is now a fan too. Have not been to an El Potro in years but they have always been one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I am pretty sure they have a menu but I always get the buffet so I can get exactly what I want in the proportions that I like. My only complaint is that they are not closer to home so I can go more often.
(5)Frank L.
This is definitely the first Mexican buffet that I have encountered. Do I need a buffet? Hell no! Is it a cool concept, For sure! For $7.99, you really can't beat all you can eat Mexican. The buffet items were freshly prepared, and very tasty. I really liked the ability to make my own fajitas and tacos. I would stay away from the tamales though. it was quite soggy and lacked taste. All in all, this is a great place to try if you feel like a LOT of Mexican!
(3)Ryan G.
Great lunch buffet! Very friendly wait staff and great tasting food! I eat here about once a week or so and have never been disappointed!
(5)Erika T.
El Potro has a great lunch buffet! It's $7.99 and you really have alot to choose from. They have all the different types of shells, so that you can make your own tacos, burritoes and taco salads. They have enciladas, quesadillas and much much more! Their pork is to die for, it's so delicious and cooked to perfection. They also have a small salad part that has all the fixings for your tacos, etc. they have some desserts and a few cold salads too. If you're looking for a cheap place for lunch with lots of choices, El Potro is for you!

My partner loves Mexican. She's from California; it's like a law there. Since coming to Florida, we've been searching for food that was Mexican enough to satisfy her high standards. After six years, we have! The place was clean, quiet (Tuesday night), and there were drink specials. I would have been pleased enough at that. We got chips and salsa as soon as we sat (fresh, yummy). El Potro may have finally made me a Mexican food fan. The kid had the taco, rice, and beans off the kids menu. The chicken was flavorful, but seasoned to a kids' palate. My pal had the chimichangas, which he enjoyed. My partner had carne asada. I had the Guadalajara. Everything came out fast, with good quality and fresh ingredients. Everyone cleared their plates. We'll definitely be back to try the lunch buffet.

El Potro has another restaurant in the Orlando area in which I was told that it was delicious by a friend. After hearing this, I set out to try this one out in oviedo. It is located on the corner of a strip mall(plaza). Went there for the lunch buffet which is 7.99 (a very reasonable price for a Mexican buffet) I wasn't expecting much but was amazed at how fresh and savory the food was! The food included rice, beans, enchiladas, quesadillas, fajitas, and more. Dessert included fruits and the sugary tortillas, and churro looking rolls. But wait, they went the extra mile and had Puerto Rican inspired food like lechon( pig meat), fried plantain, and Flan! This alone made me impress. All the food melts in your mouth and the chips and salsa, which I waited till the end to try, was extremely fresh, crunchy, and tasty. Overall, I was so happy to find this place because overall oviedo restaurants, especially Mexican, mostly disappointed me. El Potro will definitely not disappoint, and I will be coming back again!:)

We tried this place for the first time last week and we really like Mexican Food. The service was great and the quality and quanities was fabulous. We highly recommend this place and we will be back.

I have a family if 5 and am always looking for quality food at reasonable prices. This is just that! All enjoyed the meal, even the picky eater! Very generous portions and great service. Highly recommend.

Not good. Don't go.

I have driven by this wonderful little Restuarant for many years and never ventured in. I am glad that I checked YELP and went today for dinner. What a treat! Very nice staff. Nicely decorated. Tasty chips and salsa come out when you first sit down. Could have just eaten those and been filled and satisfied! Food was delicious! Two of my boys had cheese quesadillas and fries, my other son had the cheeseburger. Kids happy makes for a great meal! My wife ordered from the menu and really enjoyed it. I went for the food buffet! So glad I did! Great variety of meats done Mexican style: chicken for fajitas, pork and onions, ground beef. So much more there I couldn't even describe! I made salad with meat topping, incredible! We will be back!

Best Mexican restaurant in Oviedo, possibly Orlando area. I am from So. California and so, after moving to Florida, have been disappointed with Mexican restaurants in general. This one is solid. Food is consistent and price / portion is amazing. I have never tried the buffet that people refer to, sticking with their menu items. Drinks are also reasonably priced. The only negative is they used to have a waitress there that was a big turd. But she seems to be gone and everyone else seems bueno.
(5)Jeff B.
Great local family owned Mexican restaurant. Service is friendly and food comes out quick, hot and delicious. Their salsa verde is some of the best I've had. Perfect amount of spice to give a kick to your burrito, enchilada or any other of the many items on the menu. Did I mention that the prices can't be beat for the quality of food you get? And free homemade tortilla chips and salsa. My roommate and I went in for New Year's Eve dinner and I ordered a Dos Equis draft and the server was kind enough to give me a second draft at the end of the meal on the house and wish us a Happy New Year. This place es perfecto!
(5)Debbie G.
My husband and I have eaten a lot of food at a lot of places up and down the East Coast and with that comes an awareness of what "good food" looks like and tastes like. With that said, El Potro was a very pleasant surprise. The food was authentic. The service was great and you can not beat the prices on the menu. My family of three got out of there with very full tummies and a to-go box of my left overs for $22.00. We will be back. Soon.
(5)Ray N.
Holy Guacamole, Great Mexican food in Oviedo. What to say about El Porto. It is great Mexican food at very reasonable price. I have been there many time. The staff is attentive, but not annoying. They have an all you can eat buffet, where the food is fresh. My only complaint would be is that the food is a little too salty for me. Don't take me wrong, I like well seasoned food; but El Porto is a little heavy handed. I guess that is usual for Mexican food though. If you like good Mexican food at great prices and a friendly atmosphere, El Portro is the place for you.
(5)Josh W.
I love cheap authentic Mexican food. Give me a hot plate filled with three kinds of enchiladas swimming in a sea of refried beans and guacamole, and I'm in heaven. El Potro is a staple takeout in our household, delivering on the above with 5 stars. Whether you prefer the traditional American Mexican, or something more authentic, these guys have a huge menu and great service on top of it. You're not going to get anything fancy here, just very good basic Mexican food. Viva El Potro!
(4)Alex Z.
Almost as good as the one on Orlando Ave in Winter Park. Still has decent pricing and good portions.
(4)Ricky L.
lunch buffet is only 7.99 what more can you ask for?? all you can eat chimichangas, burritos, tacos, fajitas, chicken wings, beans, salsa, dip, flan, tres leches, this place is a mexican buffet paradise blog at tastychomps.blogspot.com…
(4)G. K.
Mediocre Mexican at best. Salsa nothing special. Chips no taste - like sawdust. Lousy quality chicken. Enchilada unremarkable. Overall, underwhelming.
(2)Kim S.
I came for lunch at 11. Their doors weren't open until 11:10 and when I finally got in, they still had chairs on the table and the tables were dirty. I asked the receptionist if she thought this was ok and she did not see anything wrong with it. She said they were cleaning. I worked many years in the restaurant business and we did our cleaning before the doors open. We opened on time with the restaurant ready for business. The food was not good either. Totally not worth it.
(1)Amy B.
This was very good. We went at lunch. The buffet was ok, but my dining companions ordered off the lunch menu. Both the chimichanga and taco platter were well done. We discussed the true mark of a Mexican restaurant is how homemade it is. Somethings (the tamales) were definitely homemade.
(4)
