I give 5 stars for the quality and flavor of the food. Great service and family owned! Orange beef is a must, coconut walnut shrimp... Yum. General Tsao chicken and Mongolian beef ... Yum yum.

I am continuing my search for good Chinese food in the area, and it has brought me to the Big Bok Choy Bistro. The reviews say great food, a bit expensive.....hmmm I walked in, and this place doesn't impress. Certainly doesn't appear to be worth the premium prices on the menu. I attempted to order Generals Chicken with fried rice. It comes with jasmine rice....and my desire was to pay a up charge for pork fried rice(my favorite). I was told that they wouldn't do it. If I want fried rice I must pay 14.95 for the large portion......WHAT? I offered to pay a upgrade again....she must have misunderstood. Nope. This isn't a good start. Won ton soup arrives, looks to be house made. Broth is tasty, won tons are a bit doughy. Okay....strangely my entrée arrives with a knife and fork. I asked for chopsticks, perhaps this was because I am a Caucasian white guy and they think I can't wield the tools of the trade? The plate looks spectacular, if it tasted half as good this is going to be awesome. Unfortunately it doesn't and I quickly realize why I have a knife and fork. These pieces of chicken are HUGE...impossible to eat with chopsticks. The chicken tastes a bit off like it was fried in old oil.....yes definitely. This was fried and then the sauce was added, it may have not even touched a wok. Complete and udder disappointment.....and to top it off they delivered my bill before I was half done my meal. I guess they want me to get out of here so the place can be empty again......well don't worry, I'll be leaving and not returning anytime soon.

I have eaten at BBCB the past few times I have been to the Tampa area. Victoria is a gem! She makes suggestions as to what you may like. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with BBCB. The restaurant is clean and you can tell that everything is freshly made. Can't wait to go back!

Day/time of visit: weekday lunch Small restaurant (maybe 12 tables), but nice atmosphere (more upscale than typical Chinese restaurant). I ordered Lemongrass Chicken with hot & sour soup. The soup was delicious - large cubes of tofu, mushrooms, scallions, and packing a little heat. The lemongrass chicken was good but nothing I will be craving. Loved that the thinly sliced chicken was tender (and white meat!) and that the veggies were al dente and plentiful but sauce was lacking - got mild hints of lemongrass in some bites, but mostly tasted like soy sauce. The BF ordered General Tsao Chicken and Won Ton soup. Won Ton was good for Won Ton (not my fav soup) and the chicken looked freshly fried with a typical General Tsao sauce. Portion looked very small (maybe 6 pieces of dark meat chicken?) and the 1/2 cup of rice served with it didn't fill the plate up much more. Woman that served us (owner?) was super sweet, personable and had a fun/sassy personality. Very expensive ($11-$12) for lunch and the portions were small. Not someplace I will be visiting frequently but won't throw a hissy fit if someone wants to go there.

This is the best Chinese restaurant!! We've (family of four) been there quite a few times and each time have had wonderful meals! My husband and kids have always tried something different on the menu and I always stick the my tried & true (just LOVE it - could eat it seven days a week) - the Moo Shoo Pork. The food is cooked fresh at the time of ordering and the ingredients are top notch. The appetizers we usually get are the egg rolls and the crab triangles (don't know what they're called). Both are excellent - I highly recommend the egg rolls though, as I don't care for crab. The service is excellent and Victoria is always very friendly and even after only one visit, remembered what we'd ordered on the prior visit - an unbelievable memory! The restaurant is clean and has a nice atmosphere. I highly recommend going there - you'll be glad you did :-)

In short, decent but overpriced. I stopped in to have lunch on a Saturday, and was shocked to find common take-out entrees priced at around $20 on average. I asked if there was a lunch menu, and was told that I was looking at it. I ordered, hoping that the food would make up for the high price, but sadly it was only somewhat better, and the potion was a lunch-sized portion. It was simply not worth the money. On the plus side, it is a sit-down restaurant with a nice decor, and the service was good. Unfortunately, that's not enough to make me come back for these prices.

Can't really review since we went there and although there were only 14 people in the restaurant they told us it would be an hour and a half to get food. Won't be back.

Awesome service & food, but pricey and small portions. More upscale than most Chinese restaurants. The General's chicken was really good. I would give them another chance.

We went here tonight because we were looking for good Chinese food that wasn't the sub par New York style that's all too common in our area. While the place doesn't look like much from the outside, it far exceeded our expectations. The waitress (who I believe was the owner) was attentive and super nice. The shrimp dumplings were delicate and flavorful. I use hot and sour soup as a a litmus test for good Chinese food, and this one did not disappoint, The beef broccoli and mushrooms was really good, with the beef being super tender and delicious. My wife got the mu shu pork, which was perfect. I'll admit it was a little pricey, but the quality of the food more than justified it. Overall an excellent meal. We'll probably head back on Christmas when they're conveniently open.

Not worth the price. Good food, but I don't think a $41 bill for two meals and one soda is worth it. And why don't they have fried noodles for their won ton soup? Sure the food is OK, but I live here and I can find comparable food locally for $10 less. And sure, the wife talks to you the whole time, but who wants that? My wife and I were the only ones in there, and no one came in for a carryout while we ate for (say) 40 to 50 minutes. I would think at 5 PM on a Saturday it should have had some business. When reading previous reviews, I would look at the date issued.

There seem to be two types of reviews: those who say it's fresh, gourmet, delicious Chinese food, and those who say it's not that great and overpriced. I side with the former and not the latter. The food is fresh and well-prepared. It's solidly good Chinese food. It isn't the best I've had (in the Tampa Bay Area, that's ABC Seafood in St. Pete, and Hong Kong House in Temple Terrace - both of which are 30-45 minutes from my house, and as a result I go there infrequently), but it's good. Some reviewers have complained that it's a little bland. Our food wasn't, but I'm curious if there's some sort of... non-American menu. I've heard of Asian restaurants toning down their food for Americans, and it's possible that they do it here. I would recommend that they don't, or that they give the option of more or less authentic. We could have handled more spice/garlic/ginger. But that said, we enjoyed our food. It's close to my house. It's family run. We will definitely be back. The complainers seem to take issue at three things: the price, the portion size, and whether or not the owner was rude to them/ why the food took so long to prepare. First, the price: this is a restaurant, it is not your greasy neighborhood Chinese take-out (you know, China Pearl or Chinese # 1). The interior is lovely and clean, with nice lighting and pretty fixtures. Accordingly, they charge as a restaurant would. If you want greasy take-out then get greasy take-out. But this is not the place to do so. Second, the portion size: I think this falls under my first point: this isn't China # 1. The portions aren't mammoth, and you probably won't become obese or develop diabetes eating here. But the portions are not small! My husband and I ordered a few things to share, and we have plenty of leftovers. Third, a few reviewers said that the owner was rude to them, and/or that the food took forever to prepare. To the time, it's a two person operation! The husband is the entire kitchen staff, and the wife runs the front of the house. That is an awful lot of work. Further, fresh food takes time to prepare. If you want pork fried rice in 10 minutes, go somewhere else. As to the alleged rudeness, I can't speak to it, because the owner was nothing but nice to us. She even gave us a free lychee soda while we waited for our take-out! If people have perceived her as rude, the only thing I can imagine is, if it was busy, (remember, it's only a 2-person operation and she runs the entire front of the house) she may have been rushed or hurried, and thus seemed not super friendly. This is normal. It's one thing to accuse someone of being rude, but it's another to fail to take into account the various factors that are going on in a situation. Restaurant work is hard, so cut your servers some slack. Especially when the server is the owner, and the other owner is the entire kitchen staff. In short, I recommend this restaurant, although next time I go I will ask for less-Americanized food. And we will probably eat in the restaurant, because it really is lovely and romantic.

I was expecting the usual Chinese fare; however, to my surprise this place is indeed a hidden gem. I order the General Tso's Chicken. It was the best I've ever had. Why? well you don't get those frozen nuggets of chicken fried and coated with some super sweet sauce. Here you get fresh chicken meat, lightly breaded in a spicey and not to sweet sauce. It is a bit pricier than other Chinese restaraunts, but if you want quality and not quantity, this is the place for you. How many Chinese restaurants make their own chicken broth? They do. Again, I'm used to seeing the yellow food dye in the batch of dried chicken stock. For me... I'll pay a few $$ more to get something delicious!

I'm editing my review simply because I've been here so many times over the past years, I feel absolutely compelled to provide more information. I always call ahead and order to go, to create an awesome Chinese food party for visiting friends, or simply to avoid cooking. I've been to 100's of Chinese restaurants and this one produces high quality food, with excellent flavor. I never need to add soy sauce or wish I had ordered something else. When I order spicy, we get spicy! When I order extra, extra spicy, we get it! The hot and sour soup is actually both hot and sour! The prices are not "cheap", but the portions are plentiful and the taste makes it worthwhile, for sure. The lady who runs the place is both friendly and busy. I have to reveal that somehow, she recognizes my voice when I call ahead to order and calls me by name, even if I don't call for months! Her husband in the back clearly knows his stuff. Sometimes, their young boy quietly takes care of the bill, in between his studies. The location is the worst possible, back-of-strip-mall spot. Find it and enjoy! Finally, my special recommendation, the orange beef, extra, extra spicy, is to die for. Save some for me!

Best Chinese food I've found in the area. It may seem a bit pricey but the quality is worth every penny. The Walnut Shrimp, Spicy Shredded Chicken & the Orange Chicken are amazing. And their hot and sour soup is actually hot (yay)! Everything is beautifully prepared. This is not your typical food court chinese food. This is really delicious.

Overly overly priced Chinese food that is just the same as the fast Chinese food joints and no difference in quality. How do you get away with charging $13 for imitation crab? The wanton soup taste just like chicken noodle soup. Don't waist your time.

I ate there yesterday for dinner. First, I have to comment about h m.'s review. I have doubts about the review, mainly because the restaurant is owned and operated by a husband and wife team. She handles the front of the house, and he is the chef. She is extra friendly and goes out of her way to make sure you are comfortable, and happy, and she takes the time to speak with each customer. I cannot believe her reaction would be as h m. described it. both times I have been there, the restaurant appears very clean. You can see into the kitchen, and it too appears quite clean. I also note this is h m's first and only review. Anyway, we started with the salt and pepper calamari, which was excellent. Very good flavor, spicy but not over the top. Hot and Sour Soup was outstanding. We shared a moo shoo pork. It was a large serving, with four pancakes (could have used six, but never got around for asking for more). It was very flavorful, and enough to make as a meal for two or even three. We also had the shredded shrimp (there were a bunch of large shrimp; the shredded refers to the vegetables). That was excellent, although I would say I prefered the chicken version I had last time. My wife loved the shrimp version. We also had a steak dish, although I don't recall the name. It was steak with green and white onions. Very tender, flavorful meal. Overall, very high quality. On the pricy side compared to most Chinese restaurants, but the quality is much higher than most around the area.

I recently went to Big Bok Choy bistro with my husband, largely because of the reviews on here. I have to say, I was delighted! Service was wonderful and the owner/manager is very friendly and nice. The food is more pricey than your average Chinese take out/restaurant, but this is not your average place! The decor is nice and cozy, without being pretentious or overdone. I found the food to be substantially better tasting than nearly any Asian-based food around, and I've been to MANY places, on all ranges of the price scale. To be honest, I wish they served food this good at P.F. Chang's! So on to the food. My husband and I both had Thai iced tea, and it was delicious. We shared an order of the steamed shrimp dumplings. This is a more traditional Chinese dish, and we loved them. I then had the Singapore Noodle dish (thin noodles stir-fried in a curry base with chicken, pork and shrimp) while my husband had the Orange Chicken. We were both surprised and pleased by how tasty our entrees were, and there was plenty of sharing going on, since we had generous portion sizes! We loved this jewel of a restaurant. It is a little out of the way of pretty much anything, but well worth the visit. I know I will want to return. If you're thinking of going, and you like seriously tasty Asian cuisine, you should go there now!

Really nice staff. My only bad experience there was completely my fault... During my first time eating edamame, I hadn't realized that they needed to be removed from the "pod" first. I was chewing on these suckers and couldn't understand why anyone would like it. The waitress came over and nicely informed me that a lot of people who haven't had it before tend to do that. So, there you go... and if she was lying, hey, it's all good. At least I know better now, right? ;) It isn't the widest selection of food, by any means, but definitely a good, inexpensive place to go for lunch.

Oh the love hate relationships I come across along my culinary adventures. Why Big Bok Choy do you have to be so friendly!? Why do you have to be so unbelievably nice and cute and wonderful when a stranger from out of town walks in and wants to talk food and inquire about the supposed deliciousness that you hold behind those kitchen walls? BBCB is A-OK like the 3 Stars says. It's not fantastic, and honestly I'm not likely to keep going back considering it's literally twice as expensive as a typical Chinese take out place. Another reviewer on here complained about how pricey it is and most people mentioned it, but I have to say it's a little over the top. A little too pricey for what you get whether you dine in or take out. For an appetizer I ordered the Steamed Pork Dumplings ($7.95). They come with the standard Dipping Sauce that varies restaurant to restaurant. Unfortunately BBCB's sauce was indiscernible. I wanted to taste ginger but I didn't. I wanted to taste Mirin but I couldn't. Actually it really just tasted like low sodium soy sauce. The dumplings themselve weren't much different and definitely not much better than Ling Ling Frozen dumplings from Sam's Club (sorry BBCB but it's true.) For dinner I ordered the oh-so-raved-about Hot Spicy Shredded Chicken ($12.95) and extra spicy as someone suggested. Big disappointed when it wasn't even kind of spicy. I mean not even a hint. I thought maybe my order was mixed with my Uncle's NOT SPICY PLEASE order but no, his was even milder. Regardless, the flavor COULD have saved it but didn't. In my mind what I envisioned of this dish was white meat chicken, boiled or roasted, then shredded by hand or fork, and then tossed with a firey chili oily and sauteed with mixed vegetables into a blissful dish of soon to be stomach hatred. Instead what I received was insanely slender pieces of chicken cut so thin and breaded and fried that you couldn't even tell there was chicken in them. To make matters worse they were oily. Very oily. Not pleasantly oily by any means. The end result was an off flavored, not spicy, crunchy but kind of rubbery dish served over white rice. It was edible, and really not that much different than an average General Tso Chicken from the local take out shop, but when it hits you that you paid an extra $6 or so dollars you stop and ask yourself, "why oh why BBCB do you have to do this to me?" Overall the food was average. Definitely not bad and I'd be willing to bet the rest of the menu is better than regular take out, but at $36 for take out dinner for two I'd prefer the $18 checker board Chinese to go shop around the corner. Sorry BBCB.

I have eaten here for lunch only. The dinning room is large and great for a large group. It was the price for lunch that got my attention. I like to tip 20% or more. If my lunch bill gets over ten dollars with tip then I start looking for someplace else. Chef Li Restaurant just up the street has great food for us foodies, and is well priced for us tippers.

Three years ago I wrote a favorable review of Big Bok Choy. Yesterday I frequented the restaurant and absolutely reiterate that this is a great Chinese restaurant. It is not inexpensive, but the food is fresh and delicious and the service is great. Don't eat here if you are looking for a low priced meal. Do eat here if you are willing to pay for the best.

Tucked between Dunkin Donuts and Chick Fil' A and on the side of an unsuspecting strip mall in Oldsmar is this hidden gem. Walking in to this dim-lit place camouflaged by micro-blinds, we were immediately greeted and seated by a sweet and very attentive woman. It took my wife and I a little longer than normal to take in this extensive menu packed with varying flavors from Chinese to Thai. After ordering, the apps came out Tapas Style one after another. My wife got the Shrimp Dumplings first. The dumplings were decent and came with both a vinegar sauce and a traditional dumplings sauce. Unsuspectingly my wife's non-tolerant mouth was set on fire by the dumplings sauce. Our server was very accommodating and immediately rushed out a non-spicy batch, which was really cool. I (who like spicy food) had ordered the salt & pepper prawns. Realizing we were sharing our food our server asked if they should tone down the spice for my wife and give me something extra spicy on the side. Well played. What we then got was simply amazing. Very flavorful, off the shell, and delicious prawns that we both could enjoy. My wife's Miso arrived next which she said was very good and fresh. Too often has the Miso Soup been sitting around fermenting. Sometimes that's good bit there is a point where it has gone too far. This was just right though. Just as we finished the apps our meals arrived. My wife got a traditional Chicken & Broccoli she enjoyed, and I got a Chicken Pad Thai. Both dished were excellent. You can tell they were prepared with care and not just slopped together. The meal ended with one of the best tasting fortune cookies and an amazing piece of Litchi candy. I know what you are thinking... How can this fortune cookie be any different than any other? Strangely enough it was. I noticed the wrapper wasn't the same old one you got a every other Chinese place on earth so maybe they chose this one with purpose cause even my wife noticed how good it was. Seriously. Overall an excellent experience. We'll definitely be back. Thank you BBC.

Best Chinese food in the Tampa area. As other reviewers have pointed out, cost is significantly higher than other places. They make up for it with excellent fresh ingredients and large portions. The husband cooks and the wife serves. Good choice if you want a home cooked asian meal and don't mind paying a few dollars extra.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
