Great food. Service lacks. Our waitress was quick to take our order. The food came out just as fast. After that our waitress neglected us. No refills or extra napkins. The sad part is she passed by our table several times. I ranked this resturant low because if the service. As I was finishing this review the table next to ours had to get extra napkins from the bathroom. Service is terrible.

We were apprehensive about a restaurant that is adjacent to a service station center, but I must say we were more than presently surprised. When you open the door you enter into a nicely appointed southern/western restaurant which is more than inviting. We went for breakfast and were not disappointed. The waitress was friendly and attentive and kept our coffee cup full. I ordered soft scrambled eggs with bacon and "bottomless" grits. The grits were outstanding, the eggs cooked just right and the bacon was thick cut and cooked to perfection. Only one piece of toast comes with the plate and the toast is not buttered....otherwise I would have given this place 5 stars. My husband had eggs over medium with sausage and grits and 2 pancakes. Again, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the sausage was not the usual frozen links.......it was country sausage at its best. I had to "borrow" a little of the short stack of pancakes, and they were very tasty. I could tell they were not the "boxed" recipe normally served at diners. We took the liberty of looking at their lunch menu and it is extensive and inviting. We were told by the waitress that they stay open on Friday and Saturday nights for dinner and offer a 14 oz prime rib on Saturday night that is scrumptious. I think we are going to try that as well. We try to eat in locally owned restaurants as much as possible and I must say that this one has been added to the top of our list (and I am picky!). Don't be deterred by the location. It is in an industrial area and attached to the Sunoco gas station on NW 20 Street right off US 441. This wouldn't be my choice for an elegant dinner but it is well worth the visit for a family night out for good food at reasonable prices.

At 2:15 on a weekday we decided to eat here to try their lunch. We walked in and there was no hostess. We waited...and waited.....no one. Then we looked around inside the restaurant and there were not only no customers but not 1 employee to be seen anywhere. We waited still.....and still....and no one. This has never happened to me at least before and I wasn't sure exactly what to do. One thing for sure we waited too long and had lunch somewhere else. Very sad.

This place is closed now. The food was good but the service was very spotty. I guess the management couldn't get every one of the servers on the same page. We were able to pick up some new ideas for breakfast that we can easily do at home.

Terrible food! We had the unfortunate opportunity to go out of the way because people raved about this place, hopefully I will never have to step back in the doors. The fried chicken first of all was so over fried you needed a chisel to get into it. One bite and it tasted as if someone had opened up and dumped a salt shaker into it. I wasn't the only one that thought this since another in our party had the same thing. Terrible!!! Then the "fried" cabbage turned out to me plain old boiled with a bit of smoke thrown in, a real disappointment. The corn bread crumbled into dust when you tried to eat it. Save yourself the time and look elsewhere to dine, this place is far from good 'ole southern cookin

So I had lunch today at True Grits, hopefully for the last time. Being from South Carolina I was excited to find out there was a southern restaurant in Ocala. The only thing southern about this restaurant is grits. Nothing else on the menu hints at any kind of southern heritage or food. I would describe the menu as Texan or western at best, along with the decor. But that isn't why they are getting one star. The first time I ate there was at lunch with a group from work. We all ordered our food but as we did the waitress had a look of dismay on her face. Most of us ordered entrees as opposed to sandwiches. With her look of dismay she warned us that the entrees take longer to fix and it could take up to 20 minutes to get our food. We were all OK with that, we didn't think 20 minutes was that bad. Well an hour later and still no food had arrived. Now I know why the waitress was worried. But here is something you need to understand. They are only open for breakfast and lunch! Lunch has to be served quickly... it's lunch! So if your restaurant takes an hour to get out a lunch order you are doing something wrong. Fix it. The food was fine. Nothing amazing, and the hour plus wait didn't add to our enjoyment. The second time I ate there with my boss. We all got sandwiches and the food came relatively fast and it was fine. I do like the chips. So I had to wait for an hour but the food was OK and the second time was uneventful. You might ask why only one star? I'll tell you why. Ask yourself, what one common american dish is almost fool-proof. It is so fool-proof that literally thousands high-school aged workers cook for thousands of american every day. This dish is usually one of the first things anyone learns to cook. So simple that the addition of salt and pepper and little fire is all that is needed to make a masterpiece of the american diet. If you haven't guessed by now, you are not an american. I am of course talking about a cheeseburger. True Grits served me the worst cheeseburger I have ever put in my mouth (this from a western style restaurant - remember not southern). I ordered a cheeseburger cooked medium (I only order medium rare at a restaurant if I am really familiar and trust them). On this burger lettuce, tomato, bacon, and cheese. The BLT portion of the sandwich was OK. But the pattie was pathetic. It was shaped more like a meatball than pattie being very thick and narrow in diameter. It was charred black and so dry it had a grainy texture. Think narrow, thick hockey puck. But the taste is what really is prompting me to write the review. It was super salty and strangely spicy. There was also no hint of a "beefy" flavor. The only thing I can think it taste like is tempeh (it is a vegetarian "loaf" made out of soybeans). So that is how you get one star from me. If you screw up a burger that bad you should really reconsider your day job. Did I send it back? Sadly, no I didn't, and I should have. I didn't because my group had already been waiting for about 25 minutes (most everyone else got club sandwiches, so club sandwiches and a burger takes 25 minutes here). Hope this helps.

Ate there back when it first opened. I think with all new restaurants it was going through the growing pains. Some of the food ran out and had to wait forever. But I am sure it has changed since then. The waitress was real nice. I settled on ordering on the cat fish with mac-n-cheese. We also got the fried pickles. The food was good. The price was decent also.

I thought I would update my review, as I had noticed that people were leaving negative reviews, and it had been a while since we had been (taking a family of 7 to breakfast ANYWHERE is a rare treat). I wanted to make sure that I could still recommend this place to friends. Once again, we had a great experience. Service was friendly. Food came out in a very timely manner (we were surprised), and the food was great. I had the Billy the Kid breakfast sandwich. And, once again, everyone loved their grits. My parents were along for the ride this time, and thoroughly enjoyed their breakfast. I have brought much of my family from Texas to this southern/western themed restaurant, including a fairly food-critical brother, and all have left very happy. I am sure that every restaurant has bad days, so I get that there are going to be people with bad reviews. This restaurant has been good every time that I'VE gone, though. So give them a try. We were told this time that they have started having Thursday night dinners, and kids 10 and under eat for free. All the more reason to try this local establishment over the chains.

Southern food so good it'll make u wanna slap your mamma. Four of us walked in for Saturday night supper and had to be rolled out the door when we were done. Thank goodness that they only serve dinner on Saturdays. Have to admit, my 83 year old in-laws were more than a little apprehensive about walking into a restaurant that is adjacent to a gas station but we had made reservations, which weren't necessary, and the staff greeted us by name and made us feel at home right away. We started with the fried pickles which were done just right and served with a terrific chipotle dipping sauce that was just a tad too spicy for the old folks. That just left more for my husband and me. In addition to the regular menu, there were two specials. One was a stuffed pork loin that looked divine but was not ordered by our table. The other was a prime rib that came out of the kitchen perfectly prepared and weighing in at something much bigger than the advertised 14oz. My husband made three meals out of that hunk of meat. We also ordered the shrimp and grits (with xtra shrimp to make it a dinner portion), a big bowl of chili, and the chicken fried steak. The shrimp and grits and the chili were excellent but not out of the ordinary. The chicken fried steak, on the other hand, was, like the prime rib, enormous. Smothered in (heavily) peppered sausage gravy, it was to die for. The side of mashed red potatoes were some of the best I ever tasted. Tho' they transplanted from the north 20 years, the in-laws are not accustomed to old fashioned southern cooking and had some trouble making up their minds when ordering. Our server was really patient with them and made several suggestions. She was attentive throughout the meal and service was terrific from start to finish. Do not judge this book by its cover. True Grits is a great diner that serves up great food. If we could have gone back for breakfast before the end of our visit, we would have. Now it's just something to look forward to for our next visit.

Unapologetic and rude wait staff. Disaffected waitress and not southern cuisine in a supposedly southern restaurant. Pass this one over, please!

We've eaten here quite a few times , both in the restaurant and getting takeout. The Po Boy sandwiches, both shrimp and catfish are delicious, as good as I've had in New Orleans. Any of the grit choices that we've had, especially the shrimp and grits are delicious. The drunken chicken is also very good, not what I think of as real barbecue but the meat is tender and the sauce is good. All of the side dishes that I've tried have been very good. I would completely avoid the fried chicken and the country fried steak. Both are extremely salty, and I'm a salt lover. The country fried steak is the most expensive entre on the menu and it was very tender, but the crust was soggy and came right off of the meat. I ordered the fried chicken twice, both times as a carry out. The first time it was so salty I had to remove the crust to be able to eat it. The second time it had obviously been fried once and then refried to heat it because it came out of the kitchen too quickly to have been fresh fried and the crust was burned and I again had to remove it to eat the chicken which was dry from over cooking. Overall I think if you stick with the grits, breakfast, or the po boys or catfish entre you'll like it.
