If only they were in better location, some of the best rolls I've ever had. The owner is super friendly and knows customers by name.

Stopped in here about a week ago for the second time and had another great experience. We were greeted promptly and our meals (sashi for me and 2 sushi rolls for my friend) were excellent. Though this is a small restaurant tucked in the corner of a plaza and down the way from Publix, it's a great find.

Got an assortment of sushi rolls, a la carte sushi, soup, and an appetizer as take-out for dinner. Family shared everything and thought all tasted good. I always compare Sushi places to those which I am used to in Northern VA and this place can stand on it's own but definitely is not better. With that said, I agree with most of the other people's recent good reviews and would recommend it. The only reason that I wont be likely coming back is because I am not a fan of Pompano Beach/N. Ft. Lauderdale area.

this place started out strong but by the end i was feeling neglected and short-changed. here's the run down. arrived with mom at 6:30 looking for a quick dinner. we spotted this place on yelp and it had good reviews so we decided to try. there was one other table seated, so we sat ourselves. waitress arrived and didn't introduce herself, just took our drink order, then our actual order. sounds plain enough, okay. we ordered the veggie and shrimp tempura as our entree, and the cc tuna as our appetizer (replaced krab with yellowtail, with an upcharge - maybe we should have inquired more about this). we also decided on an impromptu spinach and shrimp wonton soup for each of us. the soup arrived first, and it was fabulous. ate every last spinach leaf. then, the cc tuna rolls. i would have liked a bit more masago (and ginger on the side, it seemed they were conservative with both), but it still tasted great. the tempura shrimp and veggies were good, but i felt the shrimp was battered heavier than the vegetables, and didn't particularly like the soft, doughy inside of the tempura. the crunch factor is what i strive for when offering tempura critiques. anyhow, i still proceeded to eat. this is where is gets a bit rough. apparently our server was serving solo, and a few of the regulars popped by. it took a few minutes, but we were finally able to flag down our server for the check. the food was a bit on the pricey side, especially with the upcharge. we ended up waiting about 15 minutes from the point of asking for the check until we finally decided to stand up and go to the register to get our change ourselves, since we were paying cash (i thought the register was for take-out orders only. i may be wrong.). the waitress definitely neglected us by the end of our experience - she walked past multiple times without acknowledging us after the money tray was sitting on the edge of our table with the cash in it for at least 8 minutes (yes, we timed it!). overall, the food was good, but pricier than expected. and the service definitely did not come full circle. i'm unsure if i'll be returning again.

I came in for lunch by myself one workday afternoon. I stood there waiting for at least 5 minutes before someone told me to find a seat. I was ready to order and could not get the waitresses attention. (Yeah, I'm definitely not one of those wave my hands and snap until they listen people ether). However, there were only 2 other tables at the time. I got the crunchy JB roll (on lunch special) and it was good but nothing special. Not sure what all the hype is about this place... It's very small with sub par service and just average sushi.

So yummy. Very fresh. Not the cheapest place around but worth the extra bucks. Love the Escolar sushi. Very friendly staff. We frequent this place because we can always get a table and love their sushi.

My friend and I decided to have sushi for lunch and yelp recommended this place because it was close-by. The place was clean and well kept. The waitress greeted us warmly. We ordered the mixed tempura appetizer and it was delicious. The shrimp was my favorite. I ordered the Red Dragon roll and my friend got the Mikado roll, both were excellent. It was funny how his roll was warm and mine was cooler, so it was interesting trying each others' rolls. Everything came up on time and we were able to have a delicious meal within the time we had for lunch. Thank you!

Very good sushi. I called ahead to place an order and try this place for the first time. I arrived 45 minutes later and that's when they started to make it. That was definitely an annoyance. I went out to my truck to make a couple calls and 10 minutes later the manager came out and gave me dinner. Curbside service. so although they played the card of not making the order till I showed up they made up for it in the end. The Sushi itself was excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area. Just be prepared to possibly wait when you go to pick it up Recommended, the green dragon roll. I have been to many sushi places and this is a place that easily ranks in the top 5 for Broward!

There is really nothing special about this place, I don't understand why fellow yelpers gave it such high scores. The food is a little over-priced considering the quality isn't that good. I ordered a Sukiyaki Steak (Beef, Tofu, Mushroom, Vegetable, and Rice noodle in a sweet soy sauce), and it didn't really have any flavor to it. That was a disappointment. I then ordered a volcano role, which was not even fresh. The fish in the role tastes like it was suffering before it died 2 weeks ago. The waitress is very nice though! But food is definitely mediocre.

Located in the left corner of a publix plaza. Found this place a few years ago when i used to live off commercial. Glad i did. Mikado sushi is great. The staff is always really friendly and the quality of sushi has always been consistent.

Boom. What a great local find! I am a sushi connoisseur and I will say this place is one of then best spots in FTL. You would never guess that in a strip mall next to public but you will NOT be disappointed. So yummy! The tempura is exceptional and the Chico roll is a must try

Best sushi in Fort Lauderdale! Very reasonable prices and great variety of Thai and sushi. Three man and voodoo are the best rolls on the menu. Takeout recommended as the place is pretty quiet and located in a strip mall.

We had such a nice experience at this sushi restaurant on Valentine's. It's is small, cozy and cute. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our server happened to be the owner of the restaurant and she was so helpful and professional. We ordered 1 sushi boat for 2 and 2 dinner bento boxes. There were 4 of us and we thought that we could finish everything. But there was more food than anybody could finish. Sushi quality was excellent, fresh and super generous! Bento box runs for $20/box and sushi boat for 2 is around $40. I would recommend to just order 1 sushi box and an a la carte for 2 people. We had tempura cheesecake for dessert. It was surprisingly delicious! If we lived here, we would be a regular at this place. We loved our experience here! It's just very homey and the quality is one of the best!

Kathy is AMAZING! The sushi was beautiful. The rolls were a nice size as well. Kathy helped me pick a few rolls that sounded really good. They were indeed good. A bit pricey for the quality. But not bad. Not The sushi wasn't of poor quality.. My bottled Japanese beer tasted flat. Which was a bummer because I ordered one based off of how bubbly they are! LoL!!! I am a new fan of Japanese beer. I don't mind a paying a little more for anything just as long as the quality is there. The fact of the matter was that I truly enjoyed the rolls! They struggled a bit tonight with the speed of ordering and cashing folks out. However, I didn't really mind because the customer service was outstanding. They were also on a first name basis with the majority of their customers! Always a good sign in my opinion!

  • Clay C.

This was a really nice surprise. It's this little hole-in-the-wall. I noticed our waitress fastidiously realigning the barely noticeable serving boats. It was pretty quite so I assumed she must just be a nervous, new restaurant owner. I asked how long they'd been open. She says, "thirty-five years." Thirty-five years and they still care about the details! I really mean that. I ordered an eel roll and a spicy tuna. The chef didn't just throw them on a plate and send them out. He took the time to form them into flower pedals and arrange them together. Keep in mind this was end of the day, we were the last order. I'm sure he just wanted to get out of there. But he still made the effort. Sushi was excellent, service was great. Definitely coming back :)

  • Ali W.

The service here was okay. I almost had to get up and go up to the sushi bar a few times to ask for something because no one was coming out but when you actually got a chance to ask them for something they were speedy. The okonomiyaki was mostly batter. The sushi here was unimpressive. You can tell they don't use proper sushi rice.

  • Marilyn P.

I've become a regular here. Kathy makes me feel so welcomed and everything is fresh. The green dragon roll is packed with avocado & is so refreshing. Make sure you save room for the Tempura Cheesecake!

  • Bobby D.

Fresh! Well presented! And best of all, the taste is excellent. Kathy, the owner, knows her stuff and made good recommendations. The soups, sashimi, sushi and rolls were awesome. I could have eaten there all day. The rice is made fresh every few hours and the variety of vegetables and other ingredients are tops. No short cuts here. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. This truly is one of the best sushi places in the area.

Mikado is a gem in an unassuming corner of a Publix shopping center. The restaurant is nothing fancy - a small place with I'd say 15 tables max, run by a sweet family who genuinely care about your dining experience. Our first time at Mikado, we had a fantastic meal and I didn't review it b/c I thought it was a fluke or something. Well, we went back for round 2 tonight & the food was again, amazing. We ordered the sushi boat for 2, which really could've easily been split by 3 people, and not only was the presentation absolutely beautiful but the fish was fresh, cut beautifully & the service was attentive. We asked for specific fish (not chef's choice) and we were easily & gladly accommodated. I'm pretty particular about my sushi and this was some of the best I've had in a long while. We're thrilled that this restaurant is so close to our home b/c we will be regulars!!

The absolute best sushi in the area. It's a small restaurant in a strip mall shopping area tucked away in the corner. The rolls are delicious (we had JB, eel and Kanisu) and the noodle dishes are freshly prepared and so flavorful. We just started coming here recently as it's close to home. I'm only disappointed that we hadn't found this place sooner. The staff are super friendly and helpful. I dare say this will be our new go-to place for quality, healthy Japanese.

Best sushi ever! I am a a sushi aficionado and am amazed by this little place and its people. Try the voodoo roll for a nice spicy kick. The CC Tuna is the perfect light and fresh roll.

Some of the best sashimi I have ever had! Warmer temp just like jiro does it! Went during a Tuesday and seemed like only a couple of people were working but service was fine nonetheless.

The sushi is consistently delicious. Imaginative rolls. The atmosphere is sort of drab, but surprisingly good food for the expectation by looks of location. Nice little quiet sushi spot. Excellent for take-out, also.

What a hidden gem! If you're looking for a low key-night and just want some really good sushi, then Mikado is the place for you. Nestled in a shopping center next to Publix, the restaurant is small, very clean with relaxing decor. The service is welcoming with extremely attentive servers. We were passing through Ft. Lauderdale and stayed in a hotel close by for a 6 AM flight the following morning. We were in search of really good sushi. There are plenty of establishments on A1A, but after a quick glance of the menus, we were in for an expensive night if we headed down to the beach. We found Mikado via yelp, and what a gem we found. I'm more of a 'standard fare' sushi eater (the basics), where my husband orders the stuff that sometimes raises brows for those who are not adventurous. They had it all, fresh uni, sweet shrimp and a vast menu of offerings. Good sized rolls, great quality ingredients and really fresh fish. We loved it. Will visit again when passing through. The best part, the price. We can never get away without $100 for two. We walked out with $70 for two (with tip). Hooray.

Went for a quick lunch bite. Sat a sushi bar . Small. Nothing to impressive here . Except for the the little elderly man who gave me my menu, water, and my food . Very sweet. I ordered the miso soup $2.25, nice size bowl just good . Then I had the volcano roll, seaweed on outside $6.50, asked for a little eel sauce on side. Total bill w/ tip $12.28

I had to write another review because this place keeps getting better. My husband doesn't like sushi so we infrequency go out for a Japanese meal. Kathy, the owner, will make anything you want from grilled steaks to Italian. She's remarkably creative. Tonight she made a special grilled chicken salad. The chicken was full of flavor, tender and moist. The cucumber roll was more or less a vegetable roll and appealing to a non-sushi lover. I planned to order a duo with two rolls but Kathy said one roll I liked was more than enough. The portions are generous and the prices are well below market. Good, fresh and creative food accompanied by stellar service at a great price - that will make you whatever you want - what more could you ask for?

  • Wilbur C.

Mikado is a tempura sushi lovers paradise! I come here for a quick lunch, & everything I have ordered from their lunch specials menu has been very, very good. I usually get the green dragon roll, which is the shrimp tempura roll with the avocado slices on top, they also have an orange one that is the same but instead of avocado it is salmon. This place feels really Japanese, though I believe the staff is all Thai, doesn't matter though, they really know their sushi, tempura, teriyaki, & katsu! There really are no other convenient sushi options in the area, that are opened during lunch, ( unless you want to get sushi in Publix ) but really for the same amount you could get it made fresh here. THE MISO SOUP IS THE BEST I have had anywhere, very flavorful, just excellent, & you get a bowl included with your lunch special! I have also had their bento boxes, also great, try the Teri pork or chicken. Location is super convenient, right next to Publix. So location, hours, staff, & food are all great. Go if you are in the area.

A surprisingly small place located along the backside of the nearby Publix Plaza which is little more than another of the many off Commercial Boulevard strip malls. It's neat, very clean, mostly frequented by snow bird locals sort of a daughter/mother operation hence very friendly and most accommodating. As far as sushi places go, it's pretty much the real thing and I found the sushi to be rather good though not necessarily the best bang for the buck in the area. I started off with the Miso soup which was very good but it's rare to find a Miso that isn't since it's such a simple soup. I then had the "Rainbow Plate" which was the special sushi plate offering of the day and particularly good. I would have missed it had I not asked my waitress, who was apparently the mother of the owner/operator, what specials they had. Indeed it came in a beautiful rainbow color of fish ranging from the blood red tuna to the white colored fish flesh. So, if I have any tips for you, my tip would be to ask what specials they have for the day. As most know, Fort Lauderdale, previously a city awash in little more than a sea of cheap improvised Italian marinara sauces now has a number of extremely good Asian, Thai and Japanese restaurants. Having tried most of them, Mikado strikes me as being solidly above average, but with its location stuck away in a strip mall I really can't be a fan since, though it has the food which is quality of Four Stars, lacks the general ambiance one would otherwise expect.

This place is great! Service is fast and friendly. Owner is always on site and she personally serves the tables. I've only eaten sushi here, so that's what I can talk about. I've been here around six times and the fish has been very fresh and tasty every time. They have very good lunch specials and quite an extensive menu. I visited today and got the bento box, including one rainbow roll, six pieces of sashimi (tuna, white tuna, and salmon), and three pieces of sushi (shrimp, crab, tuna) all for $17+ tip. It was more than enough for me and it was so yummy. LOVE this place!

Ordered delivery to office for a business lunch and was very impressed not only the speed at which they delivered but the presentation. Ordered a boat for 6 and they not only delivered but set up in conference room.. Boat and all . Decided to go in person and was not let down . Attention to detail great service along with amazing sashimi ... Will put this in our regular rotation

Had lunch here. The rolls were really fresh, the staff was super friendly (Tony is adorable) and the prices are fair. I had a tempura soft shell crab and some other one called monster with spicy mayo and salmon. I'm definitely coming back.

Best hibachi in FLL. Great little place. Best Yum Yum sauce. It's very reasonably priced as well 20.00 for NY steak chick soup and salad. The sushi was also very fresh. Great service. The only thing is I wish they had a happy hour for drink specials but the food was perfect!

It's in a Publix plaza tucked in the left corner. It's a small place but food and service was good. A friend and I ordered 4 specialty rolls (forgot the names) and the bill came out to $51. The rolls were a good size, average priced (11-13), good quality, and filling! I would come back again if I was in the area.

    (4)

I had the 4 friends roll (not on the menu) it was recommended by the manager Kathy. Whom was awesome. My friend had the tuna rockin roll. Some of the freshest sushi you will find in South Florida. I highly recommend trying it.

Mikado! An absolute amazing restaurant. I can't describe in words how great this place truly is. My boyfriend and I frequent this place and have never left disappointed. The service is wonderful and the food is to die for. Kathy puts a lot of work and love into this restaurant and it is extremely noticeable. If you ever have a sushi craving you must come here. You will not be disappointed.

We have become regulars. And the Voodoo roll is always a choice. The place is small, cozy, and quite personable. Service is genuine, and can be a bit slow at times but that only adds to the charm. Very happy it's still around after all these years. I used to be a regular in the late 70s as well.

I like this place, sushi is good but the elderly man who greets and brings the water is do adorable and friendly. I'd come back even If the sushi were bad, just to visit the wonderful friendly staff. It's hard to find nice people like that in south Florida.

Excellent food and service highly recommend don't miss out on this hidden jewel in Fort Lauderdale fresh food clean restaurant authentic flavor went there for lunch will be coming back for dinner This is a update to my previous review I don't know what happened I went back twice after my post my first time back it was awful the chicken was super dry like it was reheated one hundred times so I gave them another chance and went back again thinking it might have just been a off day but it was not even worst this time not only was my chicken dry but this time they chopped it up and it seemed as if they just rehashed someone's leftovers so I am changing my 5 star to a 2 star

This place is great. The sushi is incredibly fresh and the staff is kind and courteous all around. Nicky the sushi master is working wonders making art on a plate. Its got a cozy setting with a nice ambiance that allows for nice conversation with subtle music to fill any gaps. I had the miso soup which was great, the hot broth was of a smooth consistency and clean flavoring. The sushi came presented in a round plate that looked specially crafted just for me and the flavors that followed were crisp clean and fresh. A blend of texture and feel that made me wanting to take the next bite. Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time.

  • Whitney H.

I just tried the "spider spicy crab roll" and the "surf and turf roll." I so wanted to like both of these rolls but neither was very good, honestly. The soft shell crab in the first roll had an off-putting crunch to its shell which had the same mouthfeel as when one bites down on a shrimp shell. It makes me think the crab was harvested at the wrong time during the molting phase, or perhaps it wasn't cooked exactly right. No soft shell crab I've ever eaten has had this unpleasant texture. The turf roll had little exceptional flavor despite having steak on it, which is what drew me to it to begin with. I took my order to go rather than eating in, but the restaurant seemed pleasant although the space felt crowded (not with people, with too much stuff in too small of a space). In the end, for $32 my late lunch wasn't very tasty (although the rolls were a good size). I doubt I will return, as I'd rather try other sushi spots in the area.

On a recent night out, we found yet another gem, thanks to Yelp. Mikado is tucked into a corner of a nice shopping plaza. It's not easy to find, even with the GPS. We had to do a couple U-turns when we finally realized where the restaurant was. Stepping inside, we were warmly greeted by the staff and escorted to a comfortable 2 top table. Mikado had a nice selection of beer and Sake, which we happily indulged ourselves. The sushi and service was outstanding, but what we especially enjoyed was the fact that it was plainly obvious the staff took immense pride in what they served. This sincere appreciation radiated throughout the restaurant and manifested itself on the dinner plates. I cant wait to return to Mikado!

This place is absolutely horrible. Sat down and waited. And waited. and waited. After 10 minutes later another four customer walked in and sat down, in a matter of seconds there were ordering there food, there drinks were put out. all before any one ever acknowledged us. Finally a waiter came over to us and asked us what we wanted to drink. So mad we left never going there again. Also so over priced.

I came here a few years ago when it was clearly under different (better) management. I remember it being one of the best sushi places. When I moved back to this area, I was excited to come back to Mikado. I never write reviews. I never send food back. To say the food here is disgusting is an understatement. It blows my mind that this place is so highly rated. Perhaps we came on an off-night. Regardless, I tried to express that I didn't like the food I ordered. The dynamite roll was incredibly dry and had no flavor, the nabeyaki just tasted like salt. When I called the waitress over (it had been about 10-15 minites since she last came by, we were waiting for refills on water) I told her I didn't enjoy the food. I said I'll pay for the extra shrimp I added to the already expensive meatless soup ($13). She said "its already prepared, I have to charge you full price". She didn't offer to exchange it for something else, just kind of had this "oh well" attitude. I asked to speak to the manager and she said that she was the manager/owner. She conceded to charging me half price afterwards but this place has horrible service, horrible attitudes, and horrible food. Needless to say, I won't be back. Neither will my friend (who's food was also horrible. Warm sushi, overly salty Age tofu- which was soggy) or any other person I can warn to stay away from this place. AWFUL.

Awesome sushi. More traditional than trendy, as it should be. Prepared perfectly and always fresh and clean. Small place with only like 10 tables, really cute decor. Never had something here that I didn't like. Price is good for the quality. Tony the waiter is great. Super attentive and nice. Go here. You'll thank me.

I am always looking for a good sushi place. Being in the Fort Lauderdale area and having found nothing worth merit south of Sunrise Blvd, I decided to search north of Sunrise Blvd. I was expecting a small hole in the wall restaurant from reading the other reviews, but when I walked in I was truly shocked. The first thing to come to my mind, "Had I designed or built anything like this in school, I would have failed on the spot." Taking it in stride, I moved forward to the table of my choice. We were greeted by an older, 5 foot tall lady. She handed us menus and asked for our drink orders. When she moved, she moved with a swiftness that belied the fact that she was walking. Looking through the menu I had some questions and asked them when she returned with our drinks. I have been to a lot of Japanese restaurants and I am always looking for a tekka don (tuna bowl). As soon as I said the words, she knew what I was talking about and asked me if that was what I wanted. HELL YES! So many sushi places have no idea what a tekka don is. I placed our order: Gyoza Tekka Don with a side of spicy mayo Chicken/beef Teriyaki I started to listen to the other customers around me. Everyone else was a regular. I was getting this warm and fuzzy feeling in me. Our server brought out Miso soup and it was good. Difficult to ruin a bowl of miso soup, but it has been done. Out of no where we have two salads brought to the table. I had to send them back, it would be too much food. Our server was so apologetic at how long the food and gyoza was taking. We received our entrees before the appetizer, but that was fine because I had my tekka don in front of me. I went right for the tuna and I was in heaven. Not the best presentations in the world, but the taste was all there. Such good tuna and rice. I tried some of the teriyaki. Oh so good. And then the gyoza arrived. The gyoza with the ponzu sauce was really good. I haven't had a nice and tangy ponzu sauce like this in quite some time. I will be returning. I am happy to say that the food definitely makes up for the presentation.

I am definitely a fan of small restaurants!!! It always seems to me that the food is freshier and made with extra love! Sushi here is very good, taste fresh and tons of options for rolls! Prices are very good too, and service is okay, a little slow, but anyways, it's worthed to came and experience it.. If you like sushi, make this place be in your list.

I love Mikado! Since I moved to Ft Lauderdale, I eat here at least once a week. Good service (it's a family owned business), very fresh and tasty food, good and relaxing atmosphere, and very affordable prices! They are always innovating, adding new specials, and new rolls. My favorite roll is the Green Dragon Roll, and my husband can't leave without trying the Volcano roll. But in the past 2 weeks, I've tried the Seared Salmon Roll and it's now in my top 5 :) I love the mix of shrimp, cilantro and salmon. I'm not a big drinker, but my husband usually tries the Japanese Beer or we share Sake. If you're new to the neighborhood or visiting Ft Lauderdale or Pompano Beach, you should definitely stop by. You won't regret it! PS: For dessert, get the Cheesecake Tempura :)

I would seriously put more stars if they were available. We had researched this place to accommodate our little canine friend as we were on vacation with family and had a craving for sushi. We had researched other places and this one was calling out our name. When calling ahead of time we were told we could bring our dog but must sit outside. After meeting out furry little friend, we were kindly invited to dine inside. Our server was super kind to our family of 6 and had amazing recommendations for us. We learned that her mother was actually the second server that came to greet us and assist with our drinks whom was also very kind. Our waters were never empty and we were never left unattended but also never hovered over. The recommendations were honored and some of our favorites were ordered and after an appropriate time (for fresh sushi) we were brought our appetizer soft shelled crab which was amazing, then our volcano roll, lemon-orange dragon roll, lobster roll, and dancing eel roll were brought out and we were just blown away. The quality was superb and the presentation was outstanding and vibrant. We also had a boat for 3 to share and we were just ecstatic. I would highly recommend this place, It is very casual but definitely a hidden gem. The dining arrangement is a bit cozy but the wait staff was perfect and the culinary creations were just amazing.

It's refreshing to go to restaurant where every employee cares so deeply about the quality of your experience. The service, presentation, and quality of food were all outstanding. Don't let the stripmall exterior fool you. This is a wonderful sushi restaurant!

So I was on travel in Florida recently. I stopped at the first convient place after renting my car and leaving the Ft Lauderdale airport. Basically I made it a few exits north on 95, pulled off and fired up the Yelp android app. This place caught my eye. First of all, the atmosphere. In a Publix shopping center. Nothing too fancy. I almost walked out when I saw the Hispanic male making Sushi. I have only had Sushi from Japanese Sushi Chefs. I decided to give it a try when I saw an older Japenese/American couple eating there. Kathy the owner/lead hostess/lead waitress was great. She is pleasant to talk to and is on fire providing customer service. I had the Bento Box special. It was a great value. Good Sushi, rolls and everthing else. Why not five stars. I don't know I guess I just got not give it because of the strip mall atmosphere but the food, definitely worth five.

The steak I ordered was very tough, flavor was great but for $20 steak should not have been poor quality meat. Sent it back and they were rude about it, ordered teriyaki chicken instead and was subpar. Then when the check came they charged me for the steak which was more expensive. Don't waste your time

This place is great! Most sushi places are stingy with the fish in sushi and rolls and don't fill me up. I was completely stuffed when I left here. The portions were great; staff were friendly; and I didn't spend the usual $70/person. The coffee is amazing!

I walked in to this amazing little place today and was instantly greeted by one of the most pleasant restaurateurs I've ever encountered. Kathy was incredibly warm and welcoming and showed me their extensive menu, from which I chose the Voodoo and Monster rolls; both were delicious. I will certainly recommend this gem of a restaurant to anyone inquiring about where to find fabulous sushi and will most definitely be back.

Is it bad? No. Is it worth visiting? Not really. We stopped in and ordered a Tuna Rock roll (or whatever they call their spicy tuna roll) and a Green Dragon roll. The tuna roll was... weird. It's like they made a bunch of California rolls, and then piled a bunch of tuna on top in a mountain-like formation. It wasn't bad, but I would never order it again. The Green Dragon looked great (they did a great job making it look like a dragon) and tasted pretty good. We also had some tempura ice cream, which was good but very overpriced. The service is excellent, and the place obviously has a group of loyal regulars. While we were there, four or five different people came in who greeted the owner like they were old friends. Since so many people like this place, I was a bit surprised how underwhelmed I was. I feel bad giving this place only 2 stars, but I really have had better, and for less. I won't tell you to avoid it, but I wasn't a fan.

I'm giving it 2 stars only because the sushi is not bad....But the owner's lack of TACT and professionalism was shocking. I was there by myself. In front of her staff (male staff) she started asking me a lot of personal questions too embarrassed to even write it here. Don't this people have MANNERS?.....There are things you do not ask a lady in public much less in front of the sushi guy, the waiter ect... Its amazing the lack of class some people have....The sushi was good. The owners manners, rapport and lack of tact.HORRIBLE.

Quality of food was great and portion size was fitting with the price. The staff were friendly and professional. the owner Cathy took the time to make me feel welcome and saw that my experiece was memorable. If I lived closer, I would visit the restaurant at least once a week. I am sad I live too far away and will make a point of visiting the restaurant if in the area again. defininitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good sushi in a friendly atmospher.

This place is absolutely amazing! Found it on yelp and called at 11:02 on a Friday night. A very nice lady picked up and said they were closed. She asked if were close, she'd wait for us. We got there and she insisted we eat in even if they were closed. They made us fresh rolls and turned on the lights and back to cooking just for us. The MONSTER roll is incredible. Check it out. A hidden gem

I loved my waitress here. Thanks to the reviews by Aria V. and Vanessa P., we wouldn't have found this place. When we got there, I ordered fried gyoza for an appetizer ($6.25). It came out at the same time as our sushi, but with the standard sweet sauce. We got a great deal on sushi. Just paid $14.95 for the One Specialty Roll and one Regular Roll Special. So we got the Dynamite Roll with the Mikado Roll (deep fried roll with avocado, cream cheese with crab). Both were OK, but would have been better if there was not so much rice, and the filling ratio was a bit higher. Otherwise, the Mikado roll looked a lot like what you would call a dynamite roll here in my town (seaweed on the outside, and served with drizzle of hot sauce), and the Dynamite roll just looked like something else (seaweed on the outside???). Add to the confusion that the spicy roll was the Mikado roll and the dynamite wasn't so spicy. :: shrug :: new place, new rules I guess? To go with our meal, Zohan decided to get some sake while we were there. Oh boy... This is the reason why I was still yopparai a few hours later and ended up tripping and falling in the parking lot. Yeah, I got the spongebob bandaids to prove it. Hahaha. Anyway the sake was smooth and warm going down. Oishikatta. And I had to get some Fried Ice Cream while we were there. Zohan had never heard of Fried Ice Cream "WHAT? Why would anyone want to fry ice cream? Weird!!" he said. He ordered Fried Cheesecake. Both were fried in tempura batter. Our waitress was a really friendly Japanese woman. Very helpful, too. Yes, they did have ramen here, but not chashu ramen.

So I order shrimp temp roll and see the guy taking pre cooked temp shrimp and puts it in the toaster oven to make my roll. This place is not fresh. I will never be back. Tee Jays in the way to go. Don't ever make sushi and put my temp shrimp in a toaster oven. Make it fresh. I give this place a 1. A shame because its so close to my house and was excited I found a sushi place. FYI what sushi place also doesn't have peanut dressing???????

It's been quite a while since I've had sushi (living with someone who only does red meat and occasional chicken can do that to a girl). So I decided to venture out and find some sushi places by the office. After reading the review from Aria, I had to check it out. Although I ordered take-out for lunch, I was enchanted with the inside of the restaurant. Stepping inside is almost like stepping into another world. There weren't many people inside, but it had a very homey feel to it. I ordered their #7 lunch special which included sushi, sashimi and a California roll. It also included soup and salad for about $10.50. Everything was wonderfully fresh and it has helped to reignite my once dormant affair for this wonderful cuisine. I definitely plan on coming back to dine-in and escape into the quiet yet welcoming ambiance of Mikado.

I discovered this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did, the food and the service was incredible. The owner (Kathy) who is the actual cook, took care us of the entire time. And she won me by just her kindness & affection. She makes these incredible sauces and her specialty rolls are made with so much love. Why you ask? Well you have to see it to believe it. The detail of the plate is very artistic and the taste is amazing! She knows what she's doing and you can see why this place has been around for 30+ years. You will not be disappointed guys, this is a must place to go! I can't wait to go again sometime. Thank you Kathy for an incredible lunch time with my wife. When we get our car serviced again we look forward to seeing you again!

Some of the best sushi around. I'm not a huge sushi fan and only like certain types and this place hits it out of the park. I've been coming here for years and the new owners have updated the look of the place nicely. Before the original owner passed away the place hadn't changed in something like 30 years. I guess this was part of the charm and the food was always wonderful then as well. The new owners (husband/wife) are very friendly and greet with a smile and welcome. Even if I haven't been in for a while she remembers what I've had in the past and makes suggestions for new items to try based on what I've enjoyed. They even go out of their way to ensure my teenage daughter that doesn't really care for seafood very much, raw or cooked, has an enjoyable meal by making her a tempura chicken sushi roll. Both my daughter and I agree their salad is excellent and the ginger dressing is better than Benihana's. I also enjoy the miso soup, my daughter...not so much. Other family and friends I have brought here have commented how much they've enjoyed the food and service which are top notch. It's now one of my daughter's favorite places and she's not easy to impress. The ingredients, especially the fish, are always very fresh and presentation is appealing. Service can be a bit slow at times, especially when busy. I gladly recommend Mikado to folks when asked about sushi places. Prices are a little high but then again you get what you pay for. When it comes to raw fish I don't want them skimping on quality to save you or make a few extra bucks. They don't. I've been in places that I thought I was getting a good deal and the food "looked" good but lacked in many ways including freshness and flavor. I do find it surprising that you're charged extra if you request a roll that's not done "inside out" (rice on outside) to be done that way. From what I can tell the amount of ingredients is the same and doesn't take a higher skill to make it. Anyway, if you're craving some delicious sushi in a pleasant, clean place then Mikado is the place. Enjoy!!!

I travel to Japan 3-4 times a year and spend most of my time in the Los Angeles area where there are plenty of great sushi restaurants. I have been dining at Mikado for almost three years now and must say that it has taken a wonderful change for the better. Since the new ownership, Mikado has improved significantly. The quality of fish and selection are well above average for Florida. The restaurant is clean and the service is exceptional. Tucked away in the Publix shopping center at Dixie & Commercial across from Bally's Fitnes you'll find adequate parking. I have also noticed a recent increase in the number of Patrons so I assume that others feel the same. Give Mikado a try you won't be disappointed. (Traditional Sushi here as opposed to Fusion.).

I spent the first half of December in Tokyo so I've spent a lot of time eating the real thing. I found this restaurant via yelp while working in FT Lauderdale this past weekend and I am so glad I did. The food was great, the service wonderful and the atmosphere relaxing. Kathy, the owner, was friendly and helpful. I had the 'boat for one' , $23, that had sashimi and sushi while my colleague ordered several different dishes including the gyoza appetizer. Between the rather large meals and the 2 drinks apiece that we had the bill was about $70. It was a huge amount of food. If I closed my eyes and just absorbed the flavors and the ambience I was back in Shinjuku eating the real thing. What a treasure this place is. I will definitely go there whenever I am in the Ft Lauderdale area in the future.

We came in at 9:30, a half hour before closing, and they were more than happy to seat us. The food was good and the service was great. It's the only place I have found in the Fort Lauderdale area (I'll admit I haven't really tried to look yet) that has Ramen, which was delicious. Their rolls are a good portion size and the fish is fresh. I would give it 5 stars but it is a tad bit overpriced. So I really give it 4.5.

We were looking for a good sushi place in the neighborhood since our favorite one is soooooo far away. It's in the publix plaza which I frequent a lot but never really see anyone in there so never thought to give it a try. But are we glad we did! It's a very small but cozy place. The service was good, the food came out rather quick & everything was so fresh & delicious that we are definitely going back! Didn't know I could substitute my salad for some California rolls, will keep that in mind next time! :-) ~~~~UPDATE~~~~ Ok, so apparently this place has been sold to a new couple because the older couple that was there when I wrote the first review are no longer there. Now its a yourger couple who runs the place and i dont know how japanese they are since they had a mexican dude working there, you dont see that too often. Well, lets just say that now I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK! they dont honor the same deals that the other couple had where you substitute the soup or sald for a few sushi rolls AND we had a coupon from justmealdeals.com and they didnt want to honor that neither!!!! The lady was acting all stupid saying "NO, NO we dont do that" and asking me "who put that there?!?". the coupon was $5 off of a $30+bill so obiously our bill was OVER $30+, AND we WERE regulars there and I say were because today was our last visit!!!!! if you cant treat your "regulars" good, cant honor deals and discounts and can't keep them happy so they keep coming back AND bringing you more customers (which we have several times), then you are not a good bussiness owner!!! SO PEOPLE IF YOU SEE A DEAL OR COUPON OR ANYTHING WHERE YOU GET FREE STUFF OR $ OFF YOUR BILL FOR THIS RESTAURANT, DONT BELEIVE IT!!!!! IT'S JUST A TACTIC TO GET YOU IN THE DOOR THAT'S ALL!!!

This joint deserves are -1000. This place gets our #1 rating for the best place to be scammed. Lets just say we will be filing a multiple State complaints on Monday. Regarding just the food: Sushi was substandard, and this is NOT a Japanese place, its some backwater Japanese wanna-be hole. Their product is far past the freshness date yet they will sell you that seafood "just smells that way". Classic scam move. I have had better in 3rd world countries. 4.5 rating is due to the raters, who are clearly ignorant goobers who can be sold cat turds on rice and still love to pay their bill. The worst part is, we turned back two pieces of sushi, was offered two pieces back for no charge ($5.50 value), was given a bill for about $74, then had our $74 bill yanked and replaced with a $94 bill. We signed off on the $94, confused, and left. Then added all the items we bought, and the prices from their menu, and realized we are defrauded out of $10. This on top of being served garbage fish, which by the way, we applied southern politeness and did not make a fuss about. Southern courtesy to these people is simply at pathetic act of good ole American wussiness, I was truly stupid. We will be double checking out CC bill too!!!! We will NEVER trust Fort Lauderdale restaurants again. Joints like this give the entire region a bad name.

I get takeout sushi from Mikado every week or two. Each time the husband and wife team that own the place are so nice and friendly. The sushi is always fresh and tasty and the prices are reasonable. Sometimes when I go in there to pick up my takeout order for lunch the place is empty, and I wonder why? I guess this place is still a local secret. Highly recommended...

I first visited this sushi restaurant at the encouragement of a close friend, in 1980. I was greeted by family, shown a clean table, encouraged to try many different things, and have been coming back ever since. Tonight, I asked the wife "what was for dinner?" and was dispatched to Mikado for a sushi dinner for two. Upon my arrival, I found a note taped to the door, announcing the untimely death of the owner, Shojiro Minami, on December 17, 2010, and that the restuarant was closed indefinitely. 30 years of wasabi tears, family and friendship times, and more evaporated before my eyes, as the owner, ever to ensure your perfect sushi meal, always greeted you on your exit with a simple saying "see you tomorrow". His wife paid attention to all the orders, and his family worked the restaurant in recent years, but regardless of the recession/depression, that man delivered quality product and food relentlessly. I feel as if I lost a brother or distant family member that I wished to do more for. I am in awe for his/their tenacity to stay relevant and running for 30 years, and I mourn the loss of a great man and restuarant. If there's one thing the old man taught me, treat your customers like family, deliver consistent product at a competitive price, and your efforts will reward you. I'm overwhelmed at the loss, ashamed that I took for granted he'd be there forever, and wish I had the chance to say thank you more than I did. This is like a "Rocky" or "Mr. Miyagi" character dying. We lost a star in 2010. Hopefully many will remember.

I love this place now that it's been sold. The rolls are creative and the seafood is fresh. We like to over order and kick back a few beers and sake so we make it a bit pricey... But the atmosphere is quiet and the waitress/owner is pleasant. We enjoy our time here and will come back often.

We recently had lunch at this Sushi restaurant and I was amazed by how fresh the fish was. I ordered Sashimi which is basically raw fish (sushi without rice) and it was excellent. The presentation was beautiful. I took a photo with my phone! My husband and I are huge sushi lovers and I am pleased to recommend this restaurant.

Here's one book you do not want to judge by its' cover! The service is warm and inviting, the product is impeccably fresh and prepared with care, and Kathy, the owner, will treat you like family. There are many creative rolls offered that you won't find anywhere else (the World Class roll is a must have), and there's an extensive menu of Thai and Japanese kitchen dishes as well. This is my new "go-to" sushi joint...highly recommended.

We just spent a week in Key West and are spending the night in Ft Lauderdale before our early morning flight home. We haven't found really good Japanese food in Charlotte NC (all steak houses, and none that offer more traditional Japanese dishes like Katsu or Negimaki) so when we found Mikado here on Yelp, we decided to give it a try. We arrived shortly after 6:30pm, and found a few other diners already enjoying their meals. It is a small place, with a warm, homey feel. There are maybe 10 tables, and 5 or 6 seats at the sushi bar. We were seated immediately by the friendly but non intrusive waitress (owners wife). We ordered our food and after a very short wait, our appetizer arrived. We shared a spicy tuna roll which was a perfect balance of fresh flavorful tuna and rice. The spice was enough to warm the mouth but not enough to make it unpleasant. This was absolutely one of the best rolls we've had since moving from NY to NC about 4 years ago. Something else I've been missing since we moved is Ton Katsu - while it is a simple enough dish (fried pork cutlets served with a delicious Japanese BBQ-like sauce) it's not on any menu we've found in Charlotte. Mikado delivered! It was prepared perfectly. My husband ordered the Mixed Tempora plate and was served a large dish of a variety of perfectly fried items - light and crispy and not in the least bit greasy. We joked over dinner about coming back to Lauderdale just to get a fix of excellent Japanese food but I think we were both only *half* joking.

Great sushi and I'm not kidding. The restaurant atmosphere isn't justified the taste of the food. I had all nigiri and no roll, excellent cut, fresh fishes. I ordered conch, baby octopus, saba, uni, sweet shrimp, toro and hamashi (see pictures). I would say the reason I didn't give it a 5 stars because the rice, wasabi, soy sauce and ginger are only acceptable. (I'm a real snob sorry!)

I've been here a few times. It is a small place, so if you are a group of about 8 or more call them ahead of time - they have a little enclave in the back of the restaurant they can set up for you. The service is very attentive and they are always appreciative when you come in and thank you when you leave. The menu is not too expansive, the prices are reasonable. They do make sushi rolls with brown rice so that's always a must for me. It won't knock your socks off or anything, but it gets the job done.

I probably should have noticed a lack of reviews in the last several months. Maybe the ownership or the chef has changed, but the reviews are not consistent with the food. I also should have heeded the warning of literally being the only patron in the restaurant. The sushi was a minor step above sushi you'd find in a grocery store. I would recommend finding another sushi bar.

When I was in high school, Mikado was THE lunch spot. Not for the popular kids, and not for the jocks or the nerds or the freaks and geeks. No, Mikado was MY restaurant. We spoke Japanese, they had special chopsticks just for me and they always knew what time my girls and I would come in on Tuesday that they had our diet cokes on the table as we walked in the door. Food: This isn't just a sushi place, this is a Japanese restaurant. And by that I don't mean, oh they do teriyaki and katsu too. No, this place has a separate menu in Japanese, a specials board outside that denotes their fresh catches that would be incomprehensible to anyone who didn't know what the squiggles mean, and best yet, husband and wife are really from Japan. So you want don buri? They have it, it's delicious. Ramen? Check. Yakimeshi, udon, okonomiyaki? How about some traditional washoku of sake, gohan and nori? Oh yes. And it's all fantastic. Each dish, be it a bento box of sushi and sashimi or a dinner entree of sukiyaki, is perfectly crafted by a chef who grew up eating and making these dishes. He knows what he's doing, and it shows. Each slice of fish is cut with care so that it melts in your mouth, and all of the ingredients are authentic and used properly. Even if it's not on the menu in English, chances are they still make and make it well. This is authentic Japanese food at its finest, and the best I've found outside of Japan. I've had some great fusion, and I've had some delectable sushi, but nothing compares to Mikado for me. Every time I go down South to visit family I make sure to stop buy for at least one lunch. I love them there, and they treat me like an old friend. I would eat there every day if I could, and I'm sure that one week in high school I did. Venue: Mikado's tucked away in a shopping center on the corner of Commercial and Dixie, and I you visit Fort Lauderdale and want to eat like a local, know these are the places we go to. Not Las Olas, not A1A on the Beach, and not 17th St if we can avoid it. Small, home restaurants in large centers that typically house a grocery store, a department store and a dry cleaners. From the outside, it looks more trendy than local. It has dark plate glass windows and a decorative logo, but inside it's very much a stale faux-Japan decor--until you look closer. The TV is actually playing NHK, the trees aren't bonsai, but flowers you'll actually find in a Japanese backyard. The paintings and clippings and posters cater to the Japanese crowd that frequents there. The restaurant's small, and can at most accommodate 30 or so, but it definitely gets busy sometimes. Still, it's the atmosphere is what sells it. The people are the nicest, and you feel casual and comfortable. It's a real local place, and that's very noticeable when a regular comes in. I used to spend so much time there, each lunch got longer and longer because we would just keep talking to everyone. We were frequently late to class because of it, but it was always worth it. As my first 5-star review, I'm proud it's this restaurant, one of my favorite in the world. I can without hesitation say, if you get the chance, go to Mikado, you won't be disappointed.

Place has been there for over 20 years and is still the bomb. Small family run place with the best sushi in ft lauderdale.

Stopped in here about a week ago for the second time and had another great experience. We were greeted promptly and our meals (sashi for me and 2 sushi rolls for my friend) were excellent. Though this is a small restaurant tucked in the corner of a plaza and down the way from Publix, it's a great find.

this place started out strong but by the end i was feeling neglected and short-changed. here's the run down. arrived with mom at 6:30 looking for a quick dinner. we spotted this place on yelp and it had good reviews so we decided to try. there was one other table seated, so we sat ourselves. waitress arrived and didn't introduce herself, just took our drink order, then our actual order. sounds plain enough, okay. we ordered the veggie and shrimp tempura as our entree, and the cc tuna as our appetizer (replaced krab with yellowtail, with an upcharge - maybe we should have inquired more about this). we also decided on an impromptu spinach and shrimp wonton soup for each of us. the soup arrived first, and it was fabulous. ate every last spinach leaf. then, the cc tuna rolls. i would have liked a bit more masago (and ginger on the side, it seemed they were conservative with both), but it still tasted great. the tempura shrimp and veggies were good, but i felt the shrimp was battered heavier than the vegetables, and didn't particularly like the soft, doughy inside of the tempura. the crunch factor is what i strive for when offering tempura critiques. anyhow, i still proceeded to eat. this is where is gets a bit rough. apparently our server was serving solo, and a few of the regulars popped by. it took a few minutes, but we were finally able to flag down our server for the check. the food was a bit on the pricey side, especially with the upcharge. we ended up waiting about 15 minutes from the point of asking for the check until we finally decided to stand up and go to the register to get our change ourselves, since we were paying cash (i thought the register was for take-out orders only. i may be wrong.). the waitress definitely neglected us by the end of our experience - she walked past multiple times without acknowledging us after the money tray was sitting on the edge of our table with the cash in it for at least 8 minutes (yes, we timed it!). overall, the food was good, but pricier than expected. and the service definitely did not come full circle. i'm unsure if i'll be returning again.

  • Zoe D.

I've become a regular here. Kathy makes me feel so welcomed and everything is fresh. The green dragon roll is packed with avocado & is so refreshing. Make sure you save room for the Tempura Cheesecake!

Attention to detail great service along with amazing sashimi ... Will put this in our regular rotation

We have become regulars. And the Voodoo roll is always a choice. The place is small, cozy, and quite personable. I like this place, sushi is good but the elderly man who greets and brings the water is do adorable and friendly. I'd come back even If the sushi were bad, just to visit the wonderful friendly staff. It's hard to find nice people like that in south Florida.

Yummy food, reasonable prices, long time owners and true japanese hospitality! Everything I have tried here is good.
