When looking for authentic Nicaraguan "fritangas," or in english a homestyle restaurant, there are only a few great spots. When searching for authentic food, the flavor and taste of the nicaraguan food items is key. I came in with a bias opinion because I would be cheating on my regular go-to spot, however, I was surprised to find a new spot! It's a small hold in the wall and the only way I found out about this place was word of mouth. You drive by it and you would never assume it's a nicaraguan fritanga. Not much parking, so find a metered spot and walk over. Once inside, the line can be a bit confusing if you know spanish well, you can ask where the end of the line is. Otherwise, you can make eye contact with who you think is last and point to see if you can stand behind them. Ha! Now, normally, at a restaurant you would seat and be served. At this place, you make the line like I previously stated and wait your turn to chose your food from a window display. There can sometimes be a person shouting out the day's specials. Once it's your turn the person serving behind the glass will shout, "who's next," most likely in spanish (proximo). You can point at the things you would on your plate. I highly recommend to come here on a weekend and pick "bajo." They usually only make it on weekends. It includes: soft meat that's been boiled over a long period of time to make it very tender, so tender you can cut it with your fork. It also has differently cooked plantains in soft and hard consistencies. It comes with cabbage salad and yucca. If you order it to go (which is ideal) you'll be served in a to-go plastic container incase you to finish, this is the way to go. If you're a meat lover: order carne asada (steak) with arroz blanco (white rice) and maduros (fried plantains). I also overhead someone ordering a breakfast platter with a mix of eggs and sausage. If you ask to eat there then it'll come on a plastic plate. There is very little seating here, about three or four tables. Therefore, its not group friendly. It's kind of divey, not somewhere to go on a date but rather somewhere to go when you're in the mood for something quick, delicious, filling and different. Pricing can range from $6-$7 a plate depending not the sides you get, but thats the standard. If you want a can of soda or a typical nicaraguan juice then its a separate price.

Food was tasty and plentiful. There's also a decent selection of different dishes to choose from. Service could be a little bit slow especially during rush since there seems to be not enough servers when it comes to value you do get plenty of food and the prices are ok. However they do charge you 50 cents more if you do not want any ice in your drinks which I have never seen at any other restaurant and I am Not sure if this is legal or not. Atmosphere: there is a serious hygiene problem at this place there were food remains all over the floor and the tables. There we're also lots of flies inside the restaurant. This is probably due to inappropriate food storage and or trash disposal. There is no menu with prices displayed in the restaurant

I used to think Pinolandia was good, but after they become a 24 hours place their meat and cheese taste like rubber. Then I discovered Caña Brava, THE BEST Nicaraguan fritanga in Little Havana, by far. I'm happy to inform that one of the sisters opened up a new location on SW 12 Ave and Flagler. I recently found out. The place is called 'La Leonesa'. You want authentic, delicious Nicaraguan food, you should definitely grab yourself a plate from here.

Ok so I dont usually give 5 stars but this places deff deserves it for the value and the taste of the food. They have grilled steak rice with beans on it fried Plaintain's for about eight dollars. The steak is amazing and greatly seasoned. This is the kind of place that is not fancy at all it's very home you know small but the food is worth it not a fancy place again but the food is deliciousmy favorite thing is the grill steak with the rice with the fried Plaintain's fried cheese for about $9 . This place always has a huge line because they're very popular in the area but the line goes quickly.

  • Lexis C.

My new favorite fritanga spot in Miami. The food is very authentic and seasoned just right. They have a variety of options with very modest prices for the quantity of food that they serve. Let's just say you will have food for days if you aren't a big eater. Sadly since the food is good it draws in huge crowds so this place is always busy. Parking to say the least is a mess most of the time. I usually park far if I'm alone otherwise come with a friend and be prepared to drive in circles while one runs in.

Unbelievable, best fritanga on this side of town. We stopped here after the Marlins game. I have to say everything is great and they serve so much food. Definitely a must.......

  • Ruben M.

This place is way better then pinolandia and yambo hands down in little Havana..They moved to a better and bigger venue. The food is still great, the carne asada (Grilled Meat) is very juicy and tender. I recommend you try a drink named Cacao (powder coco). I always order carne asada with Gallo pinto (rice and beans mixed together) quesso Frito (fried cheese) which I recommend, ensalada (salad) and tejadas (fried plantains chips). Nicaraguan food is the best

  • Vanessa V.

The fritanga here is amazing! For $10 you get a heaping portion of carne asada, gallo pinto, platanitos maduros, and a pretty big piece of fried cheese. A side order of crema is $1 and its a pretty good size.

  • Lanie L.

this is the best fritanga that I have ever been to. For less then $10 I got the carne asada, gallo pinto, maduros, tortilla and queso frito! add the little salad on top of the rice with the salsa picante and it's awesome. best food from any fritanga!!!!!! the parking lot sucks but worth i!

  • Deedee N.

My fave fritanga!!! Pinolandia aint got shit on this place....except the hours, maybe. Lol. This place is pretty tiny, a hole in the wall and if you drive by too fast, you'll miss it. I was introduced to this place by a nica friend and he clearly knew what was up 'cause this fritanga is the only fritanga that matters. Besides hot food, they sell a bunch of other misc central american foods and treats. They also have the frozen goodies in flavors I've never seen. Omg. Too great. I love this place. For about 9ish bucks i get carne asada, gallo pinto, sweet plantains, fried cheese and a tortilla. Def worth it for me cause i always have leftovers for lunch for the next day! Dont forget to get a cup of cacao to go with your food!

Best fritanga in Miami hands down ! Everything is good and so many options. Only negative is that they close early

  • Diana R.

This is an excellent fritanga. The food looks fresh and they have a ton of variety. I usually get the gallo pinto and carne asada and this place makes them delicious. The space inside has plenty of tables if you choose to sit and eat. I recommend!!

  • Yesenia A.

Delicious food! I love the big amounts they serve. However, customer service is not so great. Also, meat has been a bit rough the last two times I've eaten here.

  • Y. A.

This place is my little hidden gem and I recommend it to everybody that I know. I've been going to this place since I was in high school, since my school is only bought 10 steps from this place. I've tried everything from their steak to their juices and everything in between. This place is amazing and most importantly CLEAN! If you go during dinner time, the line will be out the door but the ladies there do their best to try and get the line movie along. They are the best and I highly recommend them!!!!

  • Ant M. A.

This fritanga is my new favorite place for Nicaraguan food. A bit hard to find due to their angled entrance specially if you are driving west on 7 st. The parking is behind the building but limited in space. I have found myself visiting this place twice a week. The food is great and very reasonable in price. The portions are average but enough for 2. The carne asada is always fresh and I can honestly say that they have not let me down so far. I am picky with my Nicaraguan food. The place is small and sometimes over crowded to the point you can't actually walk in....LOL. The people here are nice and helpful. They make sure you get what you ask for. They do take tips so keep that in mind. I am a huge fan of their naranja con zanahoria, Orange and carrot juice. I buy that stuff by the gallon. I recommend this place to all those yelpers who crave Central American fair.

  • Veronica L.

Hands down the best fritanga in miami. The carne asada is always good. Prices are the norm. The place is tiny and can be quickly overlooked. Don't let that stop you from enjoying yourself some solid nica food. This and pinolandia are the only two fritangas that I'll vouche for.

    (5)
  • Kevin G.

Best fritanga in Miami. Hands down. Everything has so much flavor and done the way the Maize Gods intended. Forget Yambo or Pinolandia, this is the only place you should be having Nica food from.

  • Aldo G.

I have been coming to this restuarant since iabout 2009. I come there reguarly and I know almost all the staff and the owner. I have tried almost all the dishes they make and I would have to rate this place as the best Fritanga in Miami. I know this is a very bold statement to make but my statement is backed up by years of trying all the Fritangas in Little Havana and Sweetwater. I am also a full fledged Nicaraguan that has enoyed the culinary delights of the Nicaraguan culture since birth and spent at least half of my childhood in Nicaragua. So when it comes to nicaraguan food, I know quality when I taste it. Like most people I judge a Nicaraguan place on the quality of the quintessential dish of the Nicaraguan cuisine; Carne Asada y Gallo Pinto. I have to say that the gallo pinto is excellent and probably the best I have ever had from any restaurant. It is always flavorful and not mushy. Many places tend to have unflavorful rice, which can be spotted by the light color of the rice. In addition, the Carne Asada is always fresh, juicy and delicious. If you are like me and enjoy all that Nicarguan food has to offer; they also serve all your typical Nica dishes like: Cerdo Asado, Carne Desmenuzada, Lengua, Bistec Encebollado, Nacatamal, Indio Viejo, and many more. These dishes are not always offered at the same time and some may be only on certain days but I have never been disappointed by one. In addition, they offer all the other typical staples of Nica food. They offer a frescos naturales like Cacao, Semia de Jicaro, Maracuya, Granadia, Sevada and many more. They also sell tortillas by the dollar, rosquillas, picos, crema, and even offer a selection of quesos that you can buy the pound. Though the quality of the food is excellent the restaurant does have it's downfalls. The parking is horrible at best. There are about only 10 parking spots max and they share it with an adjacent business. In addition, the size of the resutant is very small; with a max seating capacity of 20. Sometimes the resutrant is so packed that there is litteraly no space and the line goes out the door. If you are willing look past these imperfections you may find yourself becoming a regular to this place. I highly recommend it.

Very, very small place for good Nicaraguan food. I give them more of a 3.5 than a 4, whereas I'd give Carne Asada on West Flagler a 4.5. This place is a bit too tiny for comfort for me. They have food on all of the counter spaces because there's not room for it in the cafeteria trays and I'm not too cool with that. At other places, the overflow is kept in the back, so I guess it's the same concept, but I just don't like seeing things look so disorganized. Anywho, you work with the space you have and it looks clean. I love the sopa de gallina ($6.50) here. Best I've had!! It kicks the pants off of the one at Cerro Negro in Sweetwater, as much as I love that place. This one has much more flavor, but much of that, admittedly, can be credited to how much more fat it has. They leave the skin on the chicken and each order has 1/4 chicken and loads of root vegetables. I loved the fact that they used dark meat. I believe CR uses bone-in breasts and nothing makes a better soup than dark meat, IMO. The broth at Cana Brava is super flavorful...I'm talking mouthwateringly good. It's a thicker stew-like broth with a touch of tomato color. Ever gotten a soup with the most amazing broth that was messed up by the unseasoned meat that was in it?? Ugh, frustrating! Never fear! There aint none of that at CB! The chicken here is seasoned to perfection! Seasoned well, just as if you were going to eat it alone. The yummy soup also comes with some of the most delicious root veggies ever. It's a mix of yuca, yautia blanca, yautia morada, and platano. The yautia morada just gives it that extra gustico :)! MmmM. Oh, and the meatballs are amazing! They're rustic-style, with the herbs, onions, garlic, and shredded chicken all visible and all that goodness is rolled into a ball with what I assume is corn flour. Not your conventional meatball for us Americans but, trust me, change is good, my friends! And wait, there's more! There's cabbage and the most delicious carrots ever in the mix, too. Just as a note, the soup is served in a generous portion that can certainly be two meals for a modest eater. It comes with a piping hot, moist, tender, and fluffy white corn tortilla, all for $6. I like to get hot sauce and dump the whole container in my soup for extra yummy-losity. Also, Cana Brava has the absolute best cacao I've had! It's not too sweet, not gritty, and not overly minty-tasting. It's perfect!! The empanada de maduro is the best, too! Very smooth and not overly greasy or overly dense and has lots of yummy queso seco filling. They also sell some Nica candies and bagged juices, yum! I hear their pescado a la tipitapa is the best and I saw it and it looks to die for! So, if Im so in love, why only 3.5 stars? Well, there's a few reasons. The first is that the cabbage is much more al dente than I prefer, and I like al dente. Secondly, they still haven't managed to get their packaging right, so they have to split the broth and the veggies into two different bowls to give you full portion. That's kind of annoying when you're actually trying to eat on the run. Thirdly, just a minor thing, they charge $2 for an order of white rice with your soup which, mind you, isn't exactly necessary with the meatballs and tortilla, but I was starving and wanted to stretch it for two very hearty meals. Along the same thread, it is the most flavorful white rice you've ever tasted. You can immediately taste a very rich buttery flavor, without it being greasy or overdone. Just more proof that this place ain't afraid of fat, so bear that in mind when you plan to pay them a visit. In terms of service, people are actually nice. Who would've thought it?! NOTES: CASH ONLY Parking is horrible, since it's a small lot that only has like 6 spaces, but I've always been able to find one since it doesn't take long to get food. sopa de gallina only available on Wed and Friday, call to be sure if you're going after 4PM. Nacatamales $3 (call before you go) soups $6.50 comidas completas $5.50 - either with white rice or gallo pinto, not rice with bean soup for that price). They must be open until 10:30 or later because I went at 10 on a weekday and they were still bustling and the food trays still had a good variety. UPDATE: Not the best gallo pinto--not seasoned well at all and the beans taste really really strong. I'd go for the white rice instead.
