I have mixed feelings about this place. I had visited once and enjoyed their lunch special, so I decided to come back for dinner. I ordered the chirashi, an assortment of fresh cut fish on a bed of sushi rice. It's one of my favorite sushi dishes. After waiting a bit for my plate to arrive, the first thing I noticed was how small it was compared to the chirashi I've had at other places, such as Kompai and Lee's Sushi. Then, once I started eating, I noticed the fish was cut so thin that a piece of salmon broke in half when I picked it up with my chopsticks. Overall, very disappointing. I've tried the jb tempura roll at this location before and it tasted okay, and the salad with ginger dressing that came before my chirashi was okay, too, so I'm not sure if I just had bad luck today with my entree. If I ever come back, I'll just stick to the sushi rolls. For all the chirashi lovers out there, Lee's Sushi's chriashi remains the best one I've had so far. It's worth the trip to downtown.

The restaurant is really pretty, clean, and our waitress was really nice/helpful but the sushi was not very good. The rice was too vinegary, there was crab on almost everything and it just wasn't good, the taste was a little off in the sense that it tasted like sushi that I have made, not terrible but definitely not something I would pay for. It's definitely a step up from sushi sake but still pretty bad. They should spend less of their money on decor and focus it more on the food quality.

The place seems classy from the outside but it is a quite casual atmosphere. You can view the cooks as they prepare the food. Try the curries.

Ninja, PB and Dancing Shrimp Roll..... Freaking ahhhhhhmazerolls! Hubby and I went on a Sunday night after "the daily battle of not knowing what's for dinner tonight game!" Extremely satisfied with our choice. The service, food and attention was excellent! Franco was our waiter and he was wonderful! The most honest and attentive waiter I have had in a long time! His recommendations were spot on and although we didn't plan on ordering dessert since we recommended the tempura ice cream banana we had to try it! It was a perfect ending to our Sunday dinner! Will be back!
(5)Jacob L.
French roll is like none I've ever had. A little pricey but overall pretty decent. Service is slow too.
(3)Victoria A.
The staff is always friendly, and attentive. The place is beautiful, very modern and looks flawless. It's always pretty empty whenever I'm there though, which is quite strange. The sushi is great! I like how they have a unique variety of rolls I've never heard before. I HIGHLY recommend the Kimono Roll, it was delicious! Couldn't get enough of the baked seafood. I love the projector they have, definitely gives me an idea to go watch sports game over there.
(5)Sergio F.
Love this place ! It's usually less packed than the Bonsai on 8th street. The service is a little slow but the food is always great. I recommend the ninja roll and the chicken fried rice!
(4)Danny N.
Become my go too for the Rockin Roll, PJ roll and the Pad Thai. They no longer deliver though which is a shame
(5)Karla D.
Best pad Thai I've tasted in Miami so far. Went w my gf and we got the Spicy to start our meal and we made it disappear in less than 5 mins from how delicious it was. I've also had the dragon roll here and left feeling more than satisfied.
(5)Chris L.
Service was TERRIBLE! My sister ordered sushi, the roll was sitting on the counter for over 10 minutes before our waiter brought it to us. Restaurant was empty, yet our entrees took over 30 min, when they finally came, my wife got her food first and my plate came 5 minutes later. Asked for a bigger plate to mix the rice and curry, waiter forgot. Food was ok at best but not worth the stress the server caused me...
(1)Dwade C.
Great customer service, the waiter who took care of us was very attentive. We had the French roll, highly recommended, and the spicy California roll were both good.
(5)Carmen V.
I have never ordered a platter of sushi for a party before. I thought it might be a good idea to order from here because I work right next to it. Bonsai was amazing, not only was the staff great at attending my every needs but it was cheap, fast, and best of all the sushi was amazing. EVERYONE at the party loved it. I recommended Bonsai to everyone at the party.

This place has awful sushi and awful take out service. First time I took out sushi, the rice was hard as if it was a week old. Tonight I decided to give it another try. The sushi is subpar, they didn't put wasabi in any of the take out containers and forgot to include a salad that came with one of the orders. There was no one in the restaurant and they still got it wrong? Unbelievable! I would have returned it all, but I just didn't want to drive back.

Was psyched to hear they were opening another Bonsai! They have been great, and glad to see they are expanding. This location isn't too far from the other one, but they drastically vary. This one has a different set up completely. We sat on the "couches" which were a little higher and much more comfortable than the other locations. The music was different, and the decor was similar, but for me this one was more appealing. Tried: Volcano Roll - Awesome! salmon, crab, cream cheese, cooked dynamite on top - if you don't really like seafood, avoid it, but it was great for me. Fox Roll- shrimp tempura, crab avocado, mayo, lettuce, masago with eel sauce. Delicious! JB Roll - Traditional Salmon roll with cream cheese. Can never go wrong with this....it is a LITTLE chewy, but I kinda like that. Washed it down with a nice cold Sapporo beer and was good to go!

A new Bonsai by the house? Yes Please. This location is very close to our home as well..Even though the older one is closer. However, I dont mind the extra couple of blocks for the new and improved location. The ambiance is quite similar to the other bonsai, with dim lights and soft music, however the place is new, the couches are a bit higher, and the staff is a lot friendlier here. The food was very good, I had a volcano roll which was amazing! Definitely a nice place to check oout for a Girls Night Out or a Mid Week date night.
(4)Kay L.
One of my fav sushi spots! Nice place for a date or even a game night.. They played the World Series on a big projector when I went recently. Everything I've had from there has been good but my must haves: Chicken pad Thai, red curry, and ninja roll
(5)Raquel S.
Excellent food! Great service! Mango Roll is to die for!!! Just a little pricey for families.
(4)Justin V.
It's nice to know I don't have to drive all the way to Maiko on the beach to have good sushi. I have a custom roll that I get when I go, and I love the freshness and quality of the sushi. Ambience is pretty cool, and can be casual or swanky. This place is now on my weekly rotation. Love it.
(5)Luis A.
The server wasn't even paying attention to us! The tuna tartare tuna tasted so hold and the portion was waaaay too small! My water was never refilled! Never coming back
(2)JonClaud S.
Great atmosphere, awesome service and good quality food. I'll say its the best choice in Kendall for sushi......
(5)Wendy C.
I love Bonsai. I think this is easily my favorite restaurant in west Kendall. Reason why? The pad Thai. I know for a fact this is the best Pad Thai in Miami... I challenge a better pad Thai.
(5)Ratchel D.
I love this location as well as the 8st one. Food is good. Place is always clean. Service is good. Sushi is at the top of my list, always. I have eaten here many times, always left satisfied and happy. The Thai is a bit overpriced in my opinion, but I enjoy it and don't mind paying it. Overall, great location.
(5)Charity Z.
I think I may have of found my new sushi spot. My friendly neighbor has been telling me about this place for awhile. I Finally decided to try it tonight. Boy was I pleased! The restaurant is well located. Parking is easy. Ambiance is inviting. Our waitress Debbie was super attentive and sweet. First I'll say that any restaurant with a projector screen playing Lilo and Stitch gets an automatic star. Talk about keeping the kids under control while parents enjoy a drink. The tuna tartare was the perfect starter. I had the ninja roll and it was amazing. The kiddos had the beef teriyaki. They loved it. Very generous portions. My husband had the squid cooked in some sauce, I can't recall what sauce and neither can he. But he liked it. For dessert we tried mango tempura with ice cream. It was pretty good. The mango flavor really stood out. I definitely will be back. There were many rolls on the menu that intrigued me.
(4)Jackie F.
This is my go to for sushi now...love all the rolls and plates I have had. Think the service can be a bit slow and very lax(so lately I have been opting for take out) since the hostess are so much more efficient and prompt. They are slightly pricier than the average but overall worth it bc the quality and taste is great. I have ordered a couple of their newer special rolls and such--not sure if they still have them but they were all great. Don't remember all the names. Of the regular menu, I have ordered- beauty roll, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, savvy girl, volcano shrimp tempura, tuna poke, tuna tataki, kanisu, green salad, avocado salad, tuna tartar--all are amazing. Tuna tataki and volcano shrimp tempura are my go-to's
(4)Livet B.
I had the lobster bomb!! Delicious! Super filling for 2 love it.. Best sushi I've tried yet.. Other suggestions: Kimono, Volcano and Bonsai creation.. Appetizer: rocket shrimp!! The bomb! Must try good service.. love bonsai
(5)Sarah P.
So friendly! I work across the street and they delivered so quickly! I ordered the pad thai and my friend ordered the red curry chicken, both were flavorful and delicious. (We had the lunch special) and it was great pricing too! I usually eat at bonsai for the sushi. Any sushi you try from here, you'll love. Some rolls I love are the PJ Roll, Volcano, Fox, Bonsai G and Crunch rolls!
(4)MickeyBlue I.
Craving some Pad Thai this place has been on my radar for some time. I expected it to be packed on a Sunday so I ordered it to go only to arrive and find a completely empty restaurant. I love empty, good restaurants! I ordered a Chicken Pad Thai, some fried Dumplings, and a Coconut Seafood soup. Everything was delicious and I was impressed with the restaurant itself, it's pretty big and very neat and open. Although the food was good I have to give them 3 stars on lack of attention to detail. They forgot my my white rice and the Pad Thai didn't have any peanuts or nuts of any kind. The portion is nice but it's still a bit pricey for noodles. I will return and try the dine in experience and perhaps try some of those Thai doughnuts.
(3)Eli G.
Gross. I give it one star cause I have to. The presentation is so plain. The sushi I ordered on a recommendation was taste-less. I wonder if she even paid any attention to what I was looking for because her recommendation was so off base it was ridiculous. I actually threw away some pieces in my napkin as I walked out. NEVA AGAIN!
(1)Yvelin R.
I love the ambiance of this place. Looks modern, fresh and clean. Their food is yummy and doesn't disappoint. It's perhaps a bit pricier than other places but not a huge difference. I liked their wine selections for happy (2 for 1). Nice for a lunch with girlfriends or a date with your significant other.
(4)Denise P.
This is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant. The Lobster Bomb, Ninja Rolls, Fox Rolls are a few of my favorite rolls. However the Mango Roll is to die for! Spectacular! SoBe vibe in our own backyard. Desserts are amazing and the Pad Thai and Rockin' Shrimp are absolute musts. I've hosted two small events at Bonsai and their party platters are fantastic!
(5)Tami V.
Ordered delivery, got a California roll, spring rolls, steak teriyaki, and fried rice. Everybody was impressed! Great food. Great price.
(5)Frank O.
Had lunch there, today.Kristin was my server! And she,is excellent.Everything, was perfect.Price Is fair, and quality is always there!I also, eat here on the weekends."A hit, with my friends and family".
(5)Tatiana H.
First time visiting this location. Good service overall, the only part that was a bit confusing was why the hostess attempted to seat us, a family of 3 in a 2 person table when there were various tables available nearby. Food was good, enjoyed the spicy octopus salad & the Tu Tu Mango roll along with some hot sake.
(4)Liz R.
The lobster bomb !! Sooo good . Although bonsai is it bit $$ ,but the sushi everytime my friends and I go has always been good. I still think they should upgrade there desert menu, and maybe add a special once in awhile. The fried donuts are good too
(4)Jocey R.
Went to Bonsai last night and I am sorry to say that I was very disappointed. I am not sure if they changed management or what but this is not the same Bonsai. The hubs and I went for an impromptu date night last night and we were seated right away, however, service was slowly and our waitress did not approach us for at least 10 min. We placed out order all at once: Medium Spicy Tiger Tear, Spring Rolls, and Sushi Deluxe ( tekka roll, california roll and chef's choice sushi). When the Tiger Tear arrived, I almost thought the waitress had brought the wrong dish. The slices if beef came over huge chunks of green onion and some other huge chucks of veggies?!? The Spring Rolls were tasty, no complaint there, but it was such a large plate for 2 small rolls (maybe I am wrong but I thought the order at least had 3 rolls)! Here was the worst part, they have installed a projector and were projecting the food network or something when we got there, which is fine; all of a sudden Frozen comes on at Movie Theatre Volume! So much for date night. My hubs and I were practically yelling across the table to each other. When we got our Sushi Deluxe, the most redeeming part of the meal, we inhaled it and left ASAP. Everything tasted good but the temperature on the sushi pieces was not that cold and that raised some red flags for me. Our waitress was very friendly but the service was still unusually slow. Very disappointed with this visit to Bonsai. I don't know why they are changing things up but we were not happy at all.

If something isn't right.... Fix it. Send a new one right? Not these guys! Ordered two medium pad Thai.... They're ON FIRE. $15 each! INEDIBLE!!! Don't even want to eat it now. WHAT A WASTE. I'm a chef and if something isn't right fix it!!! Horrible!!!
(1)Chris S.
This place has great food and great service. There is a never a crowd there. We sit at nice comfy couches and eat wonderful food. The only thing I would like to see is them expand their beer selection to include some craft beer.
(4)diana a.
I've had way better sushi at other sushi restaurants. I would go back but, just try something else. I did like the ambiance and like how its close to my kids school. Staff and service were ok.
(3)Glenda C.
Very excited to see this new location in an area that is in great need of restaurants especially thai/japanese cuisine. Apparently it has been opened about a week. The place is decorated very similar to other locations. Modern warehouse feel. White tables....Beautiful white orchids in the front and of course little bonsai trees. We ordered takeout. I tried chicken teriyaki, miso soup, california roll and chicken fried rice. Everything was delicious! Great addition to this little shopping mall.
(4)Vickie P.
This is my sons favorite restaurant! I can't lie that my husband and I like it as well! It's close to home, not as busy as the other location on 8 street, therefore the service is batter. I have not ordered anything I did not like! Our favorite are the dragon rolls! When it is busy the rolls take a longer so that can be a negative... That's why I can't give it give stars, but it is a great place to go solo, with family, or group one those nights you want something quick snd nearby.

So, this is how disappointed I am with Bonsai's menu and food -- First, I've been to the 8th street Bonsai location before. I didn't enjoy it because the food was sub-par and the customer service I received (alongside my 2 friends) was horribad. I'd told my boyfriend about this before, but we decided to give Bonsai (the new location on 56th street) a try. We thought, "How could this go wrong? We're getting it TO GO!" Welllll... We ordered the following: Tuna Love: spicy tuna, cucumber and tuna on top, spicy kimchee sauce - $10 Spicy Tuna Handroll - $4 Salmon sashimi - $4 So, the Tuna Love was literally just REGULAR tuna (of which the size was pretty damn small) + a TON of rice wrapped around it + tuna laid on top. It was NOT spicy tuna on the inside... Same thing with the handroll. For a "spicy tuna" handroll, all I'd received was regular tuna in it. :( Salmon sashimi was OK. We were very disappointed because the rolls tasted bland even if we dunked them into eel sauce or kimchee sauce. So, this place had blah sushi and expensive pricing. Save your money for yummier sushi. This is a reminder to myself to forgo Bonsai ever again! Try Moon - Thai & Japanese restaurant (which is like 5 minutes away on 162 and Kendall). They are far yummier and evenly (if not better) priced. :)

Decent Thai curry. Good sushi rolls. The place tries to be hip and upscale. Maybe a bit too much. Bottom line, good but overpriced. There are better alternatives, but not nearby. I don't know if I'll be back...which is far from a glowing recommendation.
(3)Tu M.
Went to @bonsai had their pork fried rice, pad Thai, gyosas absolutely delicious, Thai food was full of flavor yet, didn't feel greasy, over season. The ambiance is very cozy.
(4)Vanessa A.
I come here almost every Friday for sushi and 2 4 1 drink the geisha saki martini is delicious I try a different roll everyone I visit and have yet to be disappointed love the atmosphere and people who work there great customer service great location great food and drinks fairly priced favorite roll so far the lobster bomb roll I highly recommend it feeds at least two people brings lobster tail tempura crab salad avocado spicy mayo red tobiko lettuce and eel sauce on the side you will also get sautéed lobster scallops and mushrooms all for $38.00 again serving is large enough for at least two
(5)M C.
First & certainly our last VISIT ! I had the PJ roll my rice was so mushy it tasted glued together. My partner had the Thai meat & that wasn't spectacular either. Nice look to place but that's the only positive thing.
(1)Mara F.
Went for lunch, miso soup was good, tempura vegetables and spring rolls were good. The rest of the main entries were bland. The location has good atmosphere And good music but the food needs improvement. I had the cashew chicken my husband had the special bonsai 7 neither were good.
(3)Evelyn C.
I love this place. It's a perfect place for a date. The place has dim lighting and its intimate. Every time I go, no matter what I order, it's always made perfect. The main rolls I love are the Fox and rainbow rolls.
(4)Bethany G.
Went for dinner last night and we ordered steak teriyaki and a tempura roll. It was nearly 30 minutes before we received water to drink and another 30 minutes before we received our meals. Like other reviews said, the restaurant was practically empty and yet everything took forever. Waiter spilled my glass of wine on me and broke the glass and made me clean up the spill. Hostess came by to clean up glass but left half of it on the floor still. The food was fine but the service is terrible and we won't be going back.
(1)Franky A.
If you're ever out in this area, make no mistake this is where you want to eat. One of the best sushi joints in all of Miami. Totally worth the trek over that way. I highly recommend ordering the ninja roll and also the lobster bomb.
(5)Tati M.
I really don't know how this place does not have better ratings. I am writing this review after going several times to Bonsai solely because I did not want to write a rave review and then having a completely different experience the rest if occasions but boy was I wrong, this place was great every time I went: Great service, plenty of food selection, nice ambiance and best of all THEY DON'T CHARGE EXTRA FOR SAUCES (unlike fellow nearby restaurants "coughsushisakecough") one of my favorite rolls is the Tu Tu Mango, I highly recommend it and ohhh pretty please get their tuna tartare it's one of the best and it's a generous portion and cheap $8.00 in comparison to other restaurants that cost around $11.00-$13.00. Also recommend the party trays for any special occasion they have a few that you can choose from and all at reasonable prices. So, my fellow Yelpers if you're hungry, in the mood for sushi/Thai and are around these places be sure to check this yummy place out!!!
(5)Tori F.
The decor starts you off with a very quaint and relaxed vibe, definitely a nice atmosphere! Tried a couple different sushi selections and all of the selections were divine! The fox roll is an absolute must try! The only downside to my dining experience was how overpriced everything was. But it would be a good splurge for special occasions for small parties.

Gave this place a try in the middle of the afternoon with a friend who had good things to say about this place. We enter and this place is an ice box, I grew up in miami and know that most places keep the AC on pretty cold but damn this place was cold! The sushi - The fish tasted as plain and "fresh" as publix sushi. I live in san francisco where sushi is more common than seeing a fast food spot in Miami and I've learned how to spot good sushi and this place missed the mark. They do offer no rice for many of their rolls which is great if your like me and not a big fan of rice and would rather have my rolls a little more healthy. The seaweed salad - now this is simple, a seaweed salad should contain seaweed (go figure, a seaweed salad with seaweed in it, who would of ever thought of that one) what I ended up recieving was some seaweed but about 3/4ths of the bowl was carrotts and cucumbers. If your going to add things to make it look cute then the ratio of seaweed to "cute useless crap" should be the other was around. Over all this place trys to distract you from the seriously over priced for the quality you get food with a very typical Miami Sushi spot. Next time i want sushi I'll just wait until i'm back in san francisco.

Went for an early lunch with friends and loved it! The decor and laid-back atmosphere is perfect for dawdling over a meal. I think I would have preferred softer music so early (it was noon), but it wasn't overpowering. We sat on the couches which actually could use a little adjusting: the backrest is too far from the table and the cushioned benches seem a bit low. Again, a slight inconvenience which didn't really detract from our enjoyment. I started with the seaweed salad which was fresh and tasty (I love the sesame)! I followed that with ala carte sashimi, while my friends ordered the dynamite roll and tuna avocado roll. The rolls were fantastic, and I loved my tuna and scallop sashimi. The eel wasn't my favorite; it was actually cooked and tasted fishy. Since it's my first time eating eel I'm not sure if that's the way it's supposed to taste or not, but I don't think I will be ordering it again anytime soon. Other than that, the place is great!
